What was the initial inspiration behind ‘TAKE FLIGHT’, and how did the song come together?
It was the first ever session I did with now main collaborator Jess Heeney. We were really excited for our first session and wanted to make something really fun, sexy and Tate McRae like. I had just entered a new relationship and used that excitement to write.
You’ve described this as the first song where you feel womanly and sexy. What was it like exploring this side of yourself through music?
After releasing my debut ep in 2025, I was left feeling super proud of how it went and really confident in my songwriting. After my debut release I felt like there was space for me to explore new experiences on my next project and I felt like I had exhausted the breakup songs for that moment.
The track blends pop and R&B with a confident, high energy sound. How did you find the right balance between those styles?
It felt really natural to write this song. I think growing up with such strong Rnb influence, I naturally gravitate to those melodies when I write, even if it’s over a pop beat. Jess and I have a lot of similar pop influences so we work together really well.
You recorded the single with producer Jess Heeney at Offbeat Studios. What was the creative process like, and did the song evolve in unexpected ways?
One of the biggest evolutions of this song was that it was originally recorded in a different key. It was until I was preparing for my first tour at the end of 2025 when I rehearsed the song and felt like it was too low to give the energy it needed. So Jess and I spent many hours re-recording all the vocals (including a tonnn of vocal stacks). During this time I also asked to switch the chorus chords up so there felt like an obvious shift to make it hit.
Tate McRae and CHXRRY are among the track’s influences. Which artists or sounds are inspiring you most at the moment?
At the moment I’m absolutely loving Zara Larsson, and the way she’s making the big belting melodies mainstream again!! In a different way I’m really loving Adela too, more so for the branding and the artist world she has created.
When songwriting, where do you usually start: with a personal experience, a lyric, a melody or an idea you can’t get out of your head?
I almost always start with an experience and a generally vibe or reference song. Once the beat or chords are on a loop usually lyrics and melodies start flowing pretty quick! I like to work in order of the song (verse, pre, chorus).
Having worked with creatives like Taka Perry, Chelsea Warner and Jordie Ireland, what do you value most about collaborating with other artists?
I find it so impressive how producers can come up with a track so quickly and how many instruments these guys can play! I am so inspired by thick production so all of these people were amazing to work with.
You received second prize in APRA AMCOS’ 2025 Emerging Songwriter Award. How did that recognition influence your confidence and ambitions as a songwriter?
To be recognised by APRA for my songwriting was such an honour, it’s an organisation every Australian artist hopes to be supported by. I really hope to do more with them.
As a performer, what do you love most about bringing a song to life on stage, and does the audience ever change the way you perform it?
Performing has always been my favourite thing about writing and making music. I really love to connect with the audience, give a bit of eye contact to make someone blush or feel the excitement of a live show in front of them and getting noticed. I am always changing up the adlibs and high notes at the end of my song and I love to come up with new melodies and improvise with me voice.
‘TAKE FLIGHT’ is a preview of a new chapter planned for next year. What are you most excited to explore as your sound continues to evolve?
I’m really excited to tap into a more confident version of my artist self. I’ve worked really hard to create a visual word around the EP and I’m really interested to see if it will resonate or draw new audiences in. I’m really excited to create a fresh sound and look in my live shows and will be putting on an EP launch next year following the release.
