Tame Impala brings the Deadbeat Tour back to Aussie shores, playing his homecoming tour supported by Sydney’s own hometown hero Ninajirachi. Tame Impala, or Kevin Parker, kicks into another gear with his house-inspired new album ‘Deadbeat’, combining elements of electronica with his own signature indie-rock sound.
Coming off hot from his US leg of the tour, the Australian Leg shows that Tame Impala’s reach has no limits. Ninajirachi as an opener shows how huge his influence has become, as the EDM powerhouse has just come off her own powerhouse year since the release of her own chart-topping debut album ‘I Love My Computer’. Ninajirachi isn’t the only big-hitter to have opened for Tame on this tour; supports ranging from massive names like Dominic Fike and Djo to Fcukers and Wet Leg.
The tour was a spectacle – tracks like ‘Nangs’ and crowd favourite ‘Feels Like We Only Go Backwards’ transforming the stage into a psychedelic trip through lighting and stage magic, while a momentary lapse onto the B-Stage provided a much more mellow setup backed by the atmospherics in the tracks ‘Ethereal Connection’ and ‘Not My World’.
No matter how experimental the music got throughout the night, Kevin’s signature rock sound still thundered through the venue – ‘Elephant’, ‘Eventually’ and ‘The Less I Know the Better’ echoing through with as much force as they did on the days that they were topping the hottest 100 in a surf-indie saturated landscape.
The Deadbeat tour continues tonight and Wednesday night in Sydney, before continuing on for the final run in the Western Australia Coast. A night not to miss, as Tame Impala cements himself (themselves for the “did you know Tame Impala isn’t just one person” crowd) as Australian music royalty.
