How has this year felt for you as a creative: what has been inspiring to you the most, as an artist?

Ups & downs always. This year I was determined to start releasing music. However, I often find inspiration in procrastination. With music videos to make, budgets to stress about, and all the things that come with releasing music, I found myself demoing out the next record instead.

 Who are you listening to right now, that would be your top new music recommendation?

Blake Mills is a new one for me. I love his approach to producing and sound design. Andy Shauf is yet to miss and Julia Jacklin’s new record is spinning a lot at our place.

What has been exciting you about your music community this year?

During lockdowns I started doing remote recording sessions. I wrote and recorded songs with people in Melbourne, Sydney and even Sweden and released them. It was a great way to keep the juices flowing and work on something without that emotional pressure.

Let’s talk ‘Black & White’ – what significance does the song have for you now it has been some time since the writing and recording process has been completed?

‘Black & White’ is about witnessing the breakdown of a relationship, and how quickly we label each other good/bad or more to the point black/white when in reality there is so much more nuance to it. It often reminds me to step back and withhold the judgement of others.

Can you tell us a bit about the process, while we’re on it, what was the best part about working on this song and what did you learn about yourself as a creative, as a result?

It’s taught me that I tend to process most of my deeper thoughts and feelings about what’s happening around me by writing. Which is a wonderful outlet to have, albeit a crutch. It’s got a lot of visceral aggressive energy, which is not something I feel comfortable expressing in the day to day. When we play it on stage I feel like the strongest man in the universe.

Is ‘Black & White’ part of a larger Charlie Gradon project and if so, can you tell us more about your plans for it?

 It’s the first single off my debut album to come next year. It’s the first body of work that I’m truly proud of. I can’t wait to share it with the world (and get started on the next one).

Do you find ideas for new music and songs come easily to you, or do you have to be in the studio for the inspiration to hit?

The home studio is a big part of it. Catching inspiration with your digital hands is such a gift. But my phone is also clogged with notes and voice memos of song ideas while I’m out in the world.

What’s your favourite thing to do when you need to chill out?

Drink coffee and make things worse.

Your favourite food spot?

If I’m alone I’ll often forget to eat. I wouldn’t say I have a favourite spot, but when I eat I do it passionately and fast.

In between dreams…

I don’t share a lot of personal stuff on social media, but this was a special one for me.

My Dad was a massive Jack Johnson fan. Way back in 2008, I took Dad to the Sidney Myer Music Bowl to see Jack. We got there early to check out the support acts. Our seats were right on the edge of the covered section and it was a wet one. To this day I’m not sure why, but one of the ushers came, had a chat with us and invited us to go right down to the barrier. Front and centre. We had one of our best, most memorable and talked about gigs we ever had together.

So to be back at the same venue, this time to see Jack with my camera in hand on the other side of the barrier in the pit was somewhat emotional. Dad was definitely there in spirit with me. He would’ve been so stoked to hear that I had the opportunity to shoot his favourite artist.

Thank you Jack for giving me the soundtrack to some amazing memories.

Leading European Minimal and Melodic Techno Producers Hozho and Droplex Join Forces for New Single “Sitting In This Cage”

Two cutting-edge producers join forces in the form of Portugal‘s Hozho and Hungarian Droplex‘s new release – “Sitting In This Cage.” True to their style, this melodic techno track truly feels like a sonic journey through time and space. Opening with soft piano notes and its namesake spoken riff, Hozho and Droplex quickly layer in ominous tones with growing synths and a dark, minimalistic bassline. Throughout the progression of “Sitting In This Cage,” one can almost envision the subject’s journey to free themselves of their mental and physical bonds. It’s a perfect balance between ethereal melodies and the darkness of minimal techno and psytrance.

Portuguese producer Hozho has become known for his minimal and yet melodic techno style (or how he describes it “Melodark“), bridging the gap between the light of progressive melodies and the nefarious underground. Perhaps just as identifying is the plague doctor’s mask he always wears while performing, which is to keep away all negative energies and problems other people have, whether on the dance floor or in their personal lives. Hungarian artist Droplex is another leader in the forward-thinking scene, most well known for his 2018 single “Dance,” which stayed at #1 on Beatport’s Minimal Chart for almost a year. Both artists have performed together at Insomnia events, as well as other festivals throughout Europe and globally.

Clinton Hutton Releases ‘Can’t Handle Losing’

Tasmanian singer-songwriter Clinton Hutton is back with his new single “Can’t Handle Losing” which will be released on December 13. It’s a toe tapping, classic rock track that hits hard from the very first beat and never eases up until the end. Clinton’s songwriting and musical talent is undeniable and on full display in this song which features a clever arrangement, tasty guitar riffs and an incredibly infectious vocal performance that fully hooks the listener in. It’s a fun and relatable song about those super competitive people who love to win at everything, but just hate to lose!

Like all previous releases by Clinton, it’s another complete solo effort where he played all the instruments, recorded, mixed and mastered the song from his home studio. The catchy performance along with the professional production is outstanding and will make you hit repeat again and again. You can hear the influences of world class acts such as ACDC, Queen and the Foo Fighters in the track, but Clinton has his own vibe happening which is engaging and refreshing.

CHARLIE GRADON returns with brand new single ‘BLACK + WHITE’

The return of Sydney singer-songwriter Charlie Gradon is a welcome one, as music fans move through into a summer of new music. His music to date has encompassed a vast range of influences, yet what threads them together is a rich knack for songwriting and individualistic style.

Today, Gradon releases a brand new single in ‘Black + White’ – an evocative and striking piece of music that reasserts Gradon as a multi-talented artist to watch.

A song focused on relationships, specifically witnessing the breakdown of a relationship, ‘Black + White’ explores the complexity of intimate connection and the nuance that comes with navigating your way through such an emotional environment.

Recorded by Gradon and his band out of Liam Judson’s Sonic Funhouse in the Blue Mountains back in April 2021, ‘Black + White’ in its final form comes wrapped up in the dynamism of a group of musicians who are very much in sync – their artistry elevates the key sounds that sit at the core of Gradon’s songwriting style.

Along with the release of the single itself, Gradon has also shared the official music video for ‘Black + White’, directed by Tom Stephens. Filmed in Pitt Town, New South Wales, the narrative of the song is captured beautifully on screen.

With early music evoking references to some of indie music’s greats including Mac DeMarco and Radiohead, Charlie Gradon emerged in 2018 as an intriguing new player on the Australian scene. British born, now based in Sydney, Gradon’s confessional style of songwriting has had international qualities from the jump; his perspectives have been both inviting and accessible for listeners, making his overall catalogue one that media and radio alike have flocked to in recent years.

Two EP releases in Self-Doubt (2018) and Blurry Ones (2020) gained the attention of triple j, 3RRR, 4ZZZ and more, while gaining rotation spots across FBi Radio, 2SER and Double J. As a live performer, Gradon’s hypnotic and charismatic presence on record has translated brilliantly into the on-stage realm; he has sold out shows at both the Lansdowne Hotel and Oxford Art Factory in Sydney.

Gradon’s songwriting pen is also strong when it comes to collaborations with other artists, his co-writing credits include Julia Stone, Pacific Avenue, The Rions, DZ Deathrays and others.

Lucky Polo

I’m originally from Sydney, Australia but moved to Irvine California so I could be closer to LA and pursue my hopes of working in a studio there with other great musicians I admire.

When I was 8 years old I began training in classical saxophone  through the school’s band program then coming into high school naturally I picked up guitar, bass, drums and keys etc. to fit into the music I was listening to such as The Moody Blues and Frank Zappa.

Recently it’s been an absolute whirlwind essentially picking up half my life and plonking it 15,000 kilometres away. I’ve been having a great time trying to set up new connections in California both within the scene and at university and trying to find new inspiration for writing. I finished a few singles a few months ago at Golden Retriever Studios in Marrickville so it’s exciting to be able to start releasing them. I’ve also started working on a longer length, more cohesive project also.

It’s only within the last couple of years that I’ve begun to explore electronic and sample based music such as Blank Banshee, Skrillex’s old EPs and J Dilla so I’ve been slowly harnessing my beat making skills. One thing that does stand out in Minimum Wage Dreamer is the use of that dirty spaghetti western style twangy guitar found in a lot of Ennio Morricone compositions. That sound is super untapped within mainstream music in my opinion and it really cuts through and contrasts nicely with the synths and 808 style drums. Honestly I’d just been watching a bunch of old westerns with my dad when I thought to myself that it could be a really great addition to the song.

Minimum Wage Dreamer was actually a joint effort between myself and childhood friend Heno. He’s a fantastic writer studying to become an English Teacher and wrote a great poem that he wanted me to use. I immediately got to work finding a melody I liked then from there built harmony and finally a catchy beat as foundation. Honestly it’s one of the quickest beats I’ve written because I just felt good that day.

I worked mostly with Antonia Gauci (from the band Gauci) at Golden Retriever Studios in Marrickville for engineering with up and coming artist Chloe Dadd as assistant engineer. It was then mastered by Simon Berckelman also at Golden Retriever. For the bass recordings on the record I had Charles Wilkinson and Dylan Catterall on drums in the outro who are both old friends of mine that I’ve known for years now.

The production was a lot of fun, and Antonia was great at suggesting new ways to push sounds further and make the record sound overall way more huge than I ever could have on my own. The synths, bass and 808s were relatively dry in terms of production, which made a lot of space especially for the vocals and double tracked guitars. The vocals had a bit of grit applied as well as some simple reverb and compression, most of the work was done with Antonia’s amazing Neumann microphone and preamp. The guitars had a fair bit done, they were double tracked through an old Fender Twin Reverb with the preamp cranked panned left and right, then we used a huge vintage spring reverb box to get that ‘drippy’ sound. We then had the signal compressed with a small amount of delay. The drums in the outro had a bunch of EQing and panning done to them just to help them sit better in the mix with the guitars.

This track truly means a lot to me. Firstly, it’s the first time I’ve had my vocals on a recording which was super exciting. It’s the first time I’d more or less written the majority of the song also. It was great to work with Heno and give his lyrics a medium to be heard. The song’s message itself however also resonates deeply with me. It’s about how we become so caught up in and pacified by social media, hype culture and consumerism that we forget to stop and smell the roses. We become so obsessed with an image of what we want to be, that when we return to reality we can’t seem to fully accept our own lives in comparison to someone we admire such as a rapper etc. and I want to question the legitimacy of that lifestyle.

Honestly I’ve felt a little bored lately with my music listening habits, so have been turning back to metal which I used to listen to in highschool as well as in my opinion the electronic equivalent that is dubstep. Bands such as Meshuggah have been great for helping me to reconsider the rhythmic choices I make within my own music and it would be incredibly interesting to see if that could be somewhat reflected in a more mainstream genre.

Away from music I love to skateboard, in a way it’s another form of self expression and a great way to stay fit. I also love fashion, reading and learning Japanese so there’s definitely a good mix of things to do. For the remainder of 2022, I’m hoping to finalise artwork and dates for my next two releases which should be the main focus of the first part of 2023. For 2023 specifically I’m looking to really start putting my head down and grinding to make contacts and meet as many people as possible within the industry. I’d also like to travel to other musical hotspots within the US such as New York, Chicago, Nashville etc.

I’ve got a pretty big sweet tooth to be honest, so a good pavlova is always welcome for me. Especially with extra meringue. As for favourite places to hang out, it has to be the cafeteria at my university. Not only are there heaps of skate spots close by, heaps of variety with the menu but there’s always a few of my buddies there to kick it and study with.

Having spent recent years establishing himself as one of Sydney’s sharpest hip hop voices and producers, YAWDOESITALL brings the lessons learned in studio and on the road together in creating his most defining work yet – debut EP LIFE I CHOSE.

From it, the artist shares new single ‘HOLD ON’, a track that new and longtime fans alike can immerse themselves in, while gaining an insight into the sonic palette of the wider Yawdoesitall body of work. A track that lands with impact, ‘HOLD ON’ is an impassioned release that urges listeners to keep on going when things get tough – a reminder that we’re all here for a purpose, regardless of how different our individual paths appear.

Recording ‘HOLD ON’ at the Elefant Traks studio in Sydney, Yawdoesitall worked with Finbar Stuart (Nerve, Agung Mango) on mixing and Lewis Mitchel (Anderson .Paak, 6LACK, NAO) on final mastering. As he describes, the single is a personal one for him and revealed itself as a vehicle to pick himself up out of a dark place.

“‘HOLD ON’ was a letter to myself when I was down, in times of doubt. ‘HOLD ON’ was a reminder to keep going and hold on one more day. It touches on depression, and being at low points in your life and reminding yourself of the ‘why’. Why you’re on this journey.”

The release of ‘HOLD ON’ follows on from the hyped up power jam from Yawdoesitall, ‘G.Y.M.’, providing a great moment of contrast for the artist as he gears up for the release of Life I Chose this November. Reflective of the choices Yaw has made in life that have set him on a path different to the one originally determined for him, the record is a statement of intent as it is a mark of arrival from the exciting artist.

Having evolved as an artist – on stage and in studio – in the last three years, Yaw’s vision has never been more concise and driven. Early releases have led him to accrue over 300,000 streams to date, continued support across Australian radio including triple j, FBi Radio, 4ZZZ, 3RRR and Radio Adelaide; Spotify and Apple Music via various editorial playlist placements; and industry praise as one of BIGSOUND’s Top 50 (2020). In 2022, Yawdoesitall returned to the wider touring circuit, completing a successful multi-date regional run throughout regional Victoria with Baker Boy.

The experience elevated Yaw as a performer and reminded him of his connection to the art – a connection he is excited for fans to witness with the release of this EP.

LA-based pop rock duo VOÍLA unveil their debut studio album, Happy Never After, out now independently. Featuring the fan favorite “Drop Dead Gorgeous,” and the band’s current single “Cursive” featuring Sleeping With Sirens’ Kellin Quinn, the album is the product of producer and multi instrumentalist Gus Ross and actor/musician/model Luke Eisner’s creative outlet of writing / recording and releasing singles throughout the pandemic. Listen to the full album HERE.

“This is the culmination of everything we’ve wanted to make musically since we met 8 years ago,” explains Gus. “It has taken us 4 years to establish how we sound. (Luke & I wrote a full 14 track album before this one that led us to be in a position to write this one.) I love melody & Luke loves lyrics. My voice notes consist of nothing other than obnoxious humming until Luke finds a line to bring them to life. We could’ve put 40 songs on this record but we felt that 21 was the magic number. We’re almost done with the next one…”

“The title track “Happy Never After” was a song we wrote almost 5 years ago in Gus’ dorm, it was my dads favorite song before he passed,” Luke states.  “We played it as an unreleased song opening up for Ke$ha in my hometown 4 years ago. In other words, this record feels like an era of love, loss, and lessons that both Gus and I went through together as we grew up only to realize we never want to grow up at all. Lyrically I pulled lines from songs I wrote as far back as my high school bands and musically I pulled influences from all the nostalgic emo bands that lit the flame inside of me to medicate myself with music and music alone. From writing Kellin Quinn’s lyrics on my bedroom wall to hearing him sing lines I’ve written just reminds me of how incredibly blessed life has been to Gus and I to be able to put this out.”

Luke Eisner and Gus Ross make up the L.A.- based pop- rock duo, VOILÀ. Respectively from Wisconsin and London, the two combine authentic production, emotive vocals and magnetic lyricism as a duo. They released their debut album “Happy Never After” on October 7th and in the last year alone, their monthly listeners have tripled (currently at 1.2M) and they are streaming over 1.7M streams each week completely independently. Where are you currently based?

Currently based in Sydney, Australia

How did you first start playing music?

Music started at church as I played drums for years before transitioning into production.

What’s been happening recently?

Recently I’ve been resting and writing short films I’m planning to shoot in the future.

Your EP ‘Life I Chose’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

This ep was influenced by the drive to be a better artist. It shows a timeline of how music started for me and what it has become. From channeling my poems into songs to producing sounds that turn into beautiful music.

How did you go about writing the EP?

This ep is a reflection of my life so I drew from my life and placed it on this record. With my friend’s help, I was able to find my sound while improving my writing and performance.

Please tell us about the single ‘Hold On’ how it came about and what it means to you:

Hold on started as a motivational song I wrote for myself. I linked up with producer friend Finbar Stuart to create and we ended up with a part 1 version of this song that never came out. This song did well at shows but we wanted to better it and we had one more session while I was on tour and came up with this masterpiece. Hold on is basically a reminder to keep going and at this point in my life, I feel this message was needed a lot. It therefore means a lot to me and it’s beautiful seeing people resonate.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with?

I worked with Finbar Stuart at Elefant Traks studios in Sydney after I came back for a break during the tour with baker boy. Fin re produced the beat and I wrote to it. We recorded it there and finished it off at his house. He then mixed the song and I linked up with Lewis Mitchel to master the song. This was also the last song for my ep so it was amazing when we finished it.

How did you approach the recording process?

We recorded without a stand hence I held the mic like a dynamic mic and basically performed the whole song. This was finished at fins studio and we knew we had a great song.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

I’m currently listening to JID, Amber Mark and Stormzy.

What do you like to do away from music?

I Love film. I’m mostly either watching or writing or working on pieces that I’m yet to put out.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2022 going into 2023?

After a hectic year, I think it’s time to rest so I’ll be spending time with friends and socialising and visit my friends’ events and shows.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

Favourite food is fried rice and favourite place to hangout is Milk beach in Vaucluse.

The Grogans are gearing up to celebrate their third studio album WHICH WAY IS OUT in full swing, with a tour kicking off across Australia and New Zealand in February 2023 including some festival appearances at Ninch Fest and Temple Sessions Festival, with all tickets on sale now!

After a busy year with their first run of international shows in New Zealand, supporting Hockey Dad on their Australian Tour,  plus festival appearances at Wanderer Music Festival, Best Night Ever , NYE on the Hill, The Great Escape and Drift Festival, and a sold out international support with US band WAVES, WHICH WAY IS OUT was launched with sold out release day shows at HABA in Rye and an exhibition at Melbourne’s Record Paradise presented by Cousin Will Records commemorating all things Grogans. Alongside the tour announcement the trio are releasing a colourful claymation visual for feature track ‘LE FANGZ’, an exuberant and playful expression of the energy more familiar at The Grogans live shows.

Have you ever imagined a daisy inspired vampire creature? Meet the protagonist of feature track ‘LE FANGZ’ and the visual claymation component created by Willem Kingma. “Le Fangz tries to mellow you out and tell a story of an imaginary creature ‘le fang’ through a more lo/fi gritty ballad. This song actually accrued from this awful painting Quin did of these daisy looking vampire critters during lockdown. We were having a few beers on the grass just painting on big bits of plywood. After Quin had finished he wrote ‘le fangs’ on it as the title which ended up in our studio until it one day became the main character in a song.” The Grogans

The band approached me with the concept of creating a stop-motion music video that involved a daisy with fangs, as the song itself was based off a painting Quin had done of a flower with sharp teeth. I started making the models using plasticine and polymer clay. I opted to shoot everything as a flat lay, animating the models on top of green or blue paper which I later keyed out in the edit and replaced with my own backgrounds. After everything was edited together, I put the digital footage to a VHS tape which to me made it look like some freaky lost children’s program! – Willem Kingma

Buffalo Paradise release their Album “The Kids Be Dancin’ to the world

Unafraid to get a crowd moving, this Sydney-based outfit leads with punchy vocals, thumping bass-lines, and driving rock rhythms, all coupled with laid back harmonies and surfy guitar leads that transport you to crystalline seas by sandy shores. 

Hand selected by ‘Coterie’ to open for them on their Sydney leg of their Australian Tour, selling out 4 single release shows and having the support of 2ser, Coast FM, Triple J Unearthed, 4zzzz and Rage (ABC), they aren’t slowing down anytime soon.

The Kids Be Dancin’ is Buffalo Paradise’s first complete artistic vision, with the flavour and musicianship of each member permeating through each song. Initially recording began prior to the 2021 June COVID lockdown, quickly halting progression of the album in its first steps, Buffalo Paradise was able to take some time away from the music and further foster the music to their artistic vision. The result is a much larger, louder and thicker sound – with considerable layering of intricacies that can only be found on repeat listens. It is clear as the listener progresses through The Kids Be Dancin’ that the band has numerous influential genres that have affected their writing, and a few black sheep songs amongst the track-listing – though only lending further to the album’s charm and musical journey. Each song provides such strong musical enjoyment to the band, and is sure to provide musical enjoyment to the listener as well.

This song is the final song written for The Kids Be Dancin’, coming to the band only a few weeks before the initial studio time for the album started. Seen by the band as the song representative of the album’s completion. “We were going to call Half Awake ‘The Observation Song’. As a band, we took a step back and decided to literally write about everyday observations you make but aren’t at front of mind. You could say Half Awake is an insight into the subconscious of Buffalo Paradise”.

Fate struck when frontman Lachie met lead-guitarist Angus at social hockey in late 2019 and they discovered common musical inspirations, from Spacey Jane to Lime Cordiale and Gang of Youths. Hostage to a tsunami of inspiration, Angus and Lachie had no choice but to embark on a journey for paradise. The tide washed up keyboardist Chris, drummer Rory, and bassist Naren Funk Fingers onto Buffalo Paradise’s shores, and the group matured into a fully formed outfit.

The band knew straight away Buffalo Paradise was a dream worth pursuing. As their melodic and rhythmic vision wove together like ocean currents, the group took their freshest material out of the rehearsal room to the live stage. Captivating audiences with their refreshing musical energy in a surf rock sound, Buffalo Paradise have come off a series of sold out headline shows for five single releases to date, and another in support of their debut album The Kids Be Dancin’, was released on November 18th 2022.

Australian Open Announces Music Programme For Finals Festival

The Australian Open have just announced their music programme for the inaugural AO Finals Festival, set to take place on the last three days of Australian Open 2023.

The Finals Festival kicks off in Kia Arena on Friday 27 January coinciding with the sixth edition of the Glam Slam presented by Ralph Lauren and will feature ‘Absolutely Everybody’ singer Vanessa Amorosi, Montaigne and Melbourne based DJ Bertie. The Glam Slam is the world’s largest LGBTQI+ tennis event and attracts players from around the world.

On women’s final day, Saturday 28 January, New Zealand’s BENEE will take to the stage, along with Thelma Plum, Winston Surfshirt and CC:DISCO!

On men’s final day, Sunday 29 January the lineup will feature Flight Facilities, brother sister duo Lastlings, Forest Claudette and Willo.

Fans who buy a ground pass or Rod Laver Arena stadium ticket on any of the three days can upgrade to enter Kia Arena for the Finals Festival for an extra $5. Alternatively music fans who wish to just attend the Finals Fest can purchase a ticket for just $34 for each session.

The Finals Festival lineup has been curated by the Australian Open in association Untitled Group, the largest independent music promoter in Australia and the masterminds behind festivals such as Pitch Music & Arts, Grapevine Gathering, Wildlands, For The Love, Ability Fest & more.

“The Finals Festival will be an incredible way to wrap up what is shaping up as a spectacular AO23,” Australian Open Tournament Director Craig Tiley said.

“It’s an exciting new initiative for the AO, which has always led the way with music and entertainment alongside the world-class tennis. The Finals Festival also gives us the opportunity to showcase our newest stadium, Kia Arena, in a unique new way.”
