Stream ‘Madness’

Get swept away by Jade Empress when her powerful electro-pop single ‘Madness’ comes out on October 14.

Jade Empress has been gaining steam and collecting accolades over the last few years as a talented songwriter. She was the winner of multiple categories of Songsalive!’s Song Comp in 2017, a finalist in the Australian Songwriters Association Songwriting Contest for three consecutive years, a semi-finalist in the International Songwriting Competition 2021, a participant in Ben Folds’ 2021 songwriting intensive retreat – all while working as a frontline doctor in rural and remote Australia.

Now, the artist is swapping the stethoscope for a microphone, and is ready to share her second single with the world, named ‘Madness’.

A soaring piece that celebrates the artist’s impressive vocal ability, ‘Madness’ speaks to embracing the chaos of daily life. Produced by Grammy award-winning Kon Kersting (who’s worked with the likes of The Jungle Giants, Tones & I, The Reubens and many more), this is a moving, melancholic pop track with emotive piano, converging in a dramatically swirling melody that uplifts and carries the songwriter’s compelling voice to even greater heights.

Written in response to the chaos of her life in recent years, she chose to welcome it rather than fight against it.

“Routine has always been important for me. I thought the pandemic was bad. Now, suddenly I’m finding myself working in the Pacific, as a doctor alongside the Australian Defence Force, and living day to day in an environment of civil and political unrest, I truly appreciate uncertainty and a certain kind of daily madness.”

Jade Empress has already received enthusiastic support for her first release from Triple J, Double J, as well as commercial and community radio stations. ‘Golden Hours’ has also been featured on international music blogs including Send Me Yours Ears, Roadie Music, Indie Dock Music Blog (UK), PopMuzik (Sweden).

With two more singles already set for release later this year, we have a lot more of Jade Empress’s talent to look forward to witnessing. The new single ‘Madness’ will be out on October 14.

Throwaway Announce Their Sophomore EP and Release Lead Single, ‘Getting To Me’

by the partae October 14, 2022
written by the partae

Single Out October 14 | EP Out November 11

Stream ‘Getting To Me’

Adelaide/Tarndanya-based alternative rock and metalcore outfit Throwaway are getting at it with their lead single ‘Getting To Me’ (October 14) from their upcoming sophomore EP– ‘Weight’ (November 11).

With an album, an EP and a handful of singles already under their belt, the three-piece composed of Zak Kerrison, Adrian Emili and Bailey O’Brien have left no stone unturned with this latest single. Incorporating elements from metalcore and alternative rock, Throwaway dabble with unusual time signatures and unique songwriting techniques to propel their live performances across South Australia.

‘Getting To Me’ illustrates the breaking point; the pent-up pressure boiling to burst; the eruption of emotion over a situation you can’t sleep off. The progressive rock drums provide the push and pull in the verses, portraying the shaky ground at the meltdown before regaining its pulse in the chorus. The cranked guitar tones are in line with the booming Adelaide alternative music scene, but break free from the noise with gliding lead guitar runs and rhythmically entertaining chugs reminiscent of Plini and I Built The Sky. Tastefully mastered by Callan Orr from Dream on Dreamer, ‘Getting To Me’ is another great Australian alt-rock track for fans of Hands Like Houses and Polaris.

Over the last six years, Throwaway have been working relentlessly behind the scenes writing and mixing their own music. Guitarist/vocalist Zak Kerrison gives us some insight into the lead single of their sophomore EP:

“This song has a pretty classic “I’m depressed” lyrical theme. The lyrics kind of speak for themself, they’re not too deep. I was just sad and wrote a song about it. I sing about some of my experiences with insomnia, avoidance, self-harm, and loneliness. Basically everything all at once just builds up and really gets to me.”

Their 6-track EP ‘Weight‘ builds further on the themes from ‘Getting To Me’ and their previous single, ‘Crisis’. ‘Weight’ explores themes that are exclusive to the modern post-internet world filled with radical conspiracy theories, the mental health pandemic and losing friends to bad habits and toxic propaganda.

The release of their 2018 album ‘Thrown Off Track’ propelled the band forward in the scene. Focus track ‘Never Learn’ has accumulated over 40,000 streams on Spotify and saw Throwaway win the People’s Choice Award twice at the 2018 Uni Adelaide battle of the bands competition.

Get your headphones out because ‘Getting To Me’ drops October 14 ahead of Throwaway’s EP ‘Weight’ set to distribute on November 11.

Prog-Rock Psych Outfit SOMNIUM Announce Sophomore Album and Release Lead Single, ‘Isolation Island’

by the partae October 14, 2022
written by the partae

Single Out October 14 | Album Out November 18

Previous Support For SOMNIUM

“With this release, it places SOMNIUM on the top shelf of ones to watch in the psychedelic realm.”
(HEAVY Mag) [About ‘The Truth Set Me Free’]

“SOMNIUM will bewitch the senses and hurl you into a parallel realm with imaginative and offbeat gusto.”
(Hysteria Mag) [About ‘What Would You Be When You Die’]

“It’s sounding like King Gizzard mixed with your dad’s old record collection.”
(Declan Byrne, Triple J) [About ‘Truth Set Me Free’]

“As per their previous releases, What Would You Be When You Die carries a particular sound that can only be described as hypnotic. Featuring a wall of sound, this one is for the psychedelic purists.”
(AAA Backstage) [About ‘What Would You Be When You Die’]

“Australian outfit bring the same grooves as Tame Impala to their latest psych-rock romp”
(Mystic Sons) [ About ‘Truth Set Me Free’]

“The duo go from trance-inducing indie rock to slacker hippy prog within the space of this four and half minute windy, drifting rocker. Feel the breeze… Catch a wave… Dig it!”
(Stoner Hive) [ About ‘Truth Set Me Free’]

Adelaide/Tarndanya-based psychedelic prog-rock princes, SOMNIUM, present their new single and music video ‘Isolation Island’ (October 14) alongside the announcement of their sophomore album – ‘To Be Is To Be Perceived’ (November 18).

Incorporating prog-rock precision and psychedelic modulations, SOMNIUM have cast another spell on the Australian psych scene with their recent singles – ‘Truth Set Me Free’ and ‘What Would You Be When You Die’?

Their latest single, ‘Isolation Island’, encapsulates the essence of SOMNIUM; a dream, a fantasy, a vision. SOMNIUM have kept themselves busy perfecting their sophomore album– ‘To Be Is To Be Perceived’ while playing shows all over Australia. Opening for King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard in Adelaide and landing a touring support with Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, SOMNIUM have continued to hypnotise packed rooms since their inception in 2014.

SOMNIUM’s latest single is the earworm driving you to delirium. The repetition of catchy melodies, trance-inducing tremolo guitars, playful progressive drums and Australiana vocals reverberates in your head rent free.

The single is being released alongside an accompanying music video produced by Bryce Kraehenbuehl from Two Up Films. Stuck on an island, the music video explores SOMNIUM’s mind-bending journey, incorporating animated visuals that portray their mind’s eye as these castaways try to work their way off. There’s plenty of food and water but nothing to keep you entertained. Welcome to Isolation Island.

When asked about how the track came about, SOMNIUM explained:

“The track was written by James when stuck on a beautiful Greek island in a faraway village with no transport and no way of escaping the Mediterranean beach. What was paradise turned into a mental asylum as his travels got stagnant. When he arrived back home and we were workshopping the shop COVID hit us and we were writing the song whilst in isolation so it was perfect alignment.”

SOMNIUM’s latest singles have found media support from international outlets Mystic Sons (UK) and Stoner Hive (US), as well as domestic outlets, Hysteria Mag, AAA Backstage and many others. With radio play on 4ZZZ, Southern FM, 2SER, RDU (NZ), Radio Wigham (UK) and many more stations, Somnium is set to shake the airwaves with ‘Isolation Island’.

Pour a Pina Colada, look up at the sun and listen to SOMNIUM’s ‘Isolation Island‘ on October 14, followed by their album ‘To Be Is To be Perceived’ on November 18.

JYE UNVEILS FORTHCOMING LP + SHARES NEW LO-FI POP SINGLE ‘REST MY HEAD’ ‘SLEEPING IN’ LP OUT FEB 2023 VIA THE ORCHARD

“Shows off his intricate indie-pop taste”

Gubbi Gubbi Land / Sunshine Coast singer, producer, and composer Jye today reveals his new LP, Sleeping In out via The Orchard in February 2023. With the news, he also shares his latest lo-fi pop single ‘Rest My Head’. LISTEN HERE.

Since formally introducing himself with ‘Sleeping In’ and ‘On My Own’ and more recently ‘Easy’, ‘Lemon Lime’ and ‘Don’t Wanna See You Down’, ‘Rest My Head’ marks the latest single lifted from his forthcoming LP Sleeping In. The track finds Jye taking a step back to ultimately looking inward, translating the most innate parts of mental health and his personal life to explore the deep elements of pairing individual growth with intimate songwriting.

Jye explains, “Rest My Head’ comes from a more introspective place than a lot of my songs have lately. All the tracks leading up to the album thus far have been either lovey-dovey songs or focusing on the feelings of people around me. This track is more of a glimpse into my own mental health and how I’m feeling. It came at a time where I was feeling kinda down about my music and feeling a lot of pressure to try be something, with the chorus centring around ‘I’ll rest my head’ when I need to.

Sometimes you need to take a step back in order to get ahead. I felt like I had all this exciting stuff happening around me and something didn’t feel right! I guess naturally it all came into play in a song. The instrumentation itself is a reflection of this, very gritty and fast-paced, almost a little angry. It’s one of those songs where the demo came together in an hour or so and hasn’t changed much since! These ones always end up being my favourites!”

With three self-released EPs already in his back pocket, Jye’s sly rebellion and creative modesty demonstrates his commitment to craft and deep authenticity. ‘Rest My Head’ is another preview into Jye’s unique brand of sunbaked indie pop, more of which will be revealed in his soul-baring LP Sleeping In. An easy confluence of deep honesty and a mirror for others to see themselves, Jye threads the sonic influences of Dominic Fike and Still Woozy into his own to encapsulate everything he strives for – an open-hearted release with its eyes firmly on the horizon.

After releasing under different monikers and even initially being afraid to sing, Jye‘s first single under his own name ‘Beachy Girl‘ emerged in 2017 as a Youtube discovery sensation, and his bedroom productions were quickly amassing over 25+ million plays online. Although best known for widely-streamed singles including the Spotify hit ‘A Shitty Love Song‘ (made on a whim in just 20 minutes), it’s clear that his debut album, Sleeping In is an apt introduction into the world of Jye, whose genre-hopping sound is propelled by the momentum of his previous releases and personal life.

Trailblazing rapper and producer Agung Mango today shares his feverishly anticipated EP, MAN ON THE GO. LISTEN HERE

For the Naarm/Melbourne-based artist, MAN ON THE GO arrives after years spent quickly establishing himself as one of the most exciting artists to bubble up from Australia’s underground rap scene. Across his two previous EPs Son Of Agung and OPENFORBUSINESS, Agung Mango’s mainstream stature has risen steadily in time, having landed festival slots and collaborations with tastemakers including Genesis Owusu, 1300 and Lucianblomkamp.

A heavy-hitting R&B album that constantly tests the borders of the genre, MAN ON THE GO flexes his dexterous, free-flowing lyricism and welcomes a level of introspection that makes the EP’s vulnerability so striking. Of the EP he shares, “MAN ON THE GO is an experiment with pop music and displays a more polished version of myself. The goal was to create something out of my comfort zone.

The EP explores the theme of duality, and the ups and downs I experienced throughout the process of making it. Something that I feel like many artists go through on their journeys. The project is both reflective and definitive of who I was at the time of creating this music, and is a great example of the constantly evolving Agung Mango – a testament to the EP title MAN ON THE GO”.

Across the seven tracks we see Agung Mango piece together a whirlwind yet cohesive sound that takes sonic cues from an underground, future-leaning production that moves through flows and cadences like no one else. From his steadying releases ‘RUNAWAY’ and ‘GUAP POP (ft. Genesis Owusu)’, Agung Mango conjures on sounds of previous releases and expands on his creative exuberance in a reflection of his artist career so far. We see him speak on the sad reality of addiction in ‘IN2DEEP!’ before delving into the undeniable bond between two people in an a81yann-featured ‘INTERTWINED’. We then turn to ‘foRREst (ft. MAMMOTH)’, ‘MISERABLE MAN’ and ‘HEADBACK’, all of which respectively look towards mental illness and the trials and tribulations of home, city life and nature in his most honest and raw form.

Since his debut in 2017, Agung Mango has cultivated a following across triple j, triple j Unearthed, FBi Radio, SYN FM, NME, Acclaim, 10 Magazine, Music Feeds, Complex Australia and Pilerats amongst others, shared stages with JID, Genesis Owusu, WIKI, Milan Ring and more, plus festivals including BIGSOUND and Laneway Festival. Having kicked off earlier this month, Agung Mango has also embarked on his biggest Australian tour yet, with tickets on sale now. ‘Alt Fiction’ Return With New Single & Video “Why Are You Still Here?’

by the partae October 14, 2022
written by the partae

Alt Fiction have unleashed ‘Why Are You Still Here?’, a defiant, roaring single that’s injected with juicy pop hooks and enormous riffs. It’s the most energetic cut to-date from the Queensland-based brothers Mitch, Matt, and Will Tyler; and it serves as a first taste of their forthcoming debut EP.

Following on from their anthemic track ‘Yesterday’, ‘Why Are You Still Here’ is an extension of that sound, delivering a single that’s simultaneously ambitious and familiar. Receiving its first play on triple j’s Home & Hosed, the new single feels like a slight sonic throwback to indie pop bands of the late 2000’s early 2010’s, it’s a danceable, bold statement destined to be the energetic peak of their live shows.

It was at British group The 1975’s live show that the trio came up with the song’s idea. During their show, after an interlude video was played featuring young climate activist Greta Thunberg, a group of concertgoers started booing.

“It got us thinking about how there’s always a group of people that just go to gigs just to get a shot for their socials, ruin the experience for other people, and are just generally crappy,”
 they say about the experience.

“If you can’t put down your fucking phone then why are you still here?” they sing pointedly in the rousing chorus over a beat that’s both angry and liberated. Coincidentally the pop groove of ‘Why Are You Still Here?’ is reminiscent of The 1975’s most upbeat moments. It’s an influence that has never really crept through their music before, but it was an intentional move to begin this new era with something “different”.

While the song shines with a sort of masterful polish you’d expect from some of the biggest bands around, Alt Fiction have kept the process proudly DIY. It was written in the “infamous caravan by the beach”, the birthplace of most of their songs, and produced by frequent collaborator Chris Collins (Middle Kids, Skegss).

Accompanying the release of the single, is their DIY official video which the trio reveal, “we don’t consider ourselves filmmakers by any means – we’ve sort of ended up making music videos out of necessity and just out of pure luck they turn out alright. “

$0, 2 days and an iPhone – those are the ingredients that make-up their latest visual creation.

“We’ve made music videos ourselves before but this one was the most ambitious for sure. We knew we wanted to involve the carnival because it’s so colorful and wild. We pretty much just dressed up in the brightest vintage clothing we could find on Depop and then ran around for two days just acting like idiots. It’s pretty embarrassing trying to film a music video at a carnival tbh – most of the footage didn’t even make the cut,” shares Alt Fiction

Intimacy has been key to their musical process since the early years. They began writing songs together in rural South-East QLD around the age of 12. Since then, they have been through plenty of iterations, moving from covering punk songs to their official debut single in 2020 ‘All My Friends’.

With four releases under their belt now, the band is taking flight, reaching audiences far beyond their humble beginnings. They’ve crashed into the scene with hooks as tight as The Strokes and Phoenix and energy as raucous as early Arctic Monkeys or Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

In a short period of time, the band have picked up some impressive accolades. They have been the triple j Unearthed Feature Of The Week and secured slots on Rage. They are also catching the attention of streamers, featuring on illustrious playlists like Spotify’s New Music Friday and Indie Arrivals and Apple Music’s The New Rock and Roadtrip Weekend. With close to 500,000 streams to their name, they’re ready to inflate those numbers with a brand-new EP.

‘Why Are You Still Here?’ fires the starting gun on their most exciting era yet. The incoming EP is made up of songs that highlight “the absolute best of Alt Fiction,” in the band’s words.

Darcy Fox

by the partae October 14, 2022
written by the partae

We sat down with Darcy Fox, who’s just released her new single “Ashamed”, available to stream now.

Where are you currently based?

I’m living on Wurundjeri land, in the inner-north of Melbourne.

How did you first start playing music?

My mum is a musician and I watched her perform my whole life. When I was a teenager, I decided I wanted to give it a go. I taught myself how to play Taylor Swift on guitar and channelled my inner showpony.

My first gig was actually at a country music club in my hometown. From there, I went around scouting any local gig I could.

What’s been happening recently?

I’ve mainly been working on my new music!

Apart from that, I’ve been fostering a greyhound with my fiance. Her name is Molly and we’re obsessed with her.

Your latest single ‘Ashamed’ will be out on the 14th of October, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

My songwriting is always influenced by my favourite lyricists – like Passenger and Brandi Carlile. For me, lyrics carry the song. We can always change the production and overall vibe, but the storytelling has to hold up.

“Ashamed” took on many different sounds, but ultimately, we ended up with a soft indie-rock track. It really helps to drive home those key moments in the song – like the swirling, repetitive bridge and the angsty pre-chorus.

How did you go about writing Ashamed?

Honestly, it was fully formed in about 30 minutes! The hook came to me in the middle of the night – I grabbed my guitar and wrote the song as quietly as possible so I didn’t wake up my housemates.

It was one of those really easy songs to write.

What message do you hope the audience takes away from Ashamed?

I hope people are reminded that the person you choose to be with should be proud of who you are – whether that’s your sexuality, gender or anything else. You deserve to be loved loudly.

No matter how people relate to the message, I hope they feel seen, heard and empowered.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with?

I had an absolute dream team for this track (and the rest of the record!).

I worked super closely with Curtis Hatton of Studio Truth, who mixed and produced “Ashamed” – he completely saw my vision and the key moments I wanted to create in the song. Then he took that and made it better than I could have imagined.

We also had the very talented Cory Jach and Marcus Ryan lay down some guitars and drums for us, to really perfect the sound.

Greg Calbi and Steve Fallone of Sterling Sound mastered the track, which is mind blowing because they’ve worked with some of my favourite artists – like Taylor Swift and Kacey Musgraves.

How did you approach the recording process?

Over what felt like the longest time! I started recording in March 2020, which really was a bad time to start anything. Anytime restrictions lifted, Curtis and I were in the studio, working on the tracks. It’s been a journey, but it feels like I’m releasing “Ashamed” at the perfect time for me.

It went through many iterations – when I wrote it in 2017, it was such a sad song. But now, with time and healing, it has such a cathartic power. I’m so glad this is the version going out into the world.

Please tell us about why being a overtly queerly artist is important to you:

It’s so important to me to normalise stories about women loving women. It’s something we still don’t hear enough of, but there’s a whole community of people looking for representation.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

I’m loving Ashe’s latest stuff, particularly her song ‘Emotional’ – I can’t stop singing to it in the car. MUNA is pretty much always on repeat, I’m hoping I can see them at Sydney WorldPride next year!

What do you like to do away from music?

Honestly, I’m so domestic it’s a little bit gross. I basically hang out with my fiance and our dogs, and play The Sims. I also dabble in burlesque lessons, which is a totally different and fun take on creative expression.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2022 going into 2023?

More music! I’ll be dropping more singles, then the album in 2023. I can’t wait for everyone to hear it!

I’m also getting married in March, which is a big one!

Favourite food and place to hangout?

Honestly, over the last two years I got really good at staying home and ordering Pad See Ew. But now that I’m back in the habit of leaving the house, I’m a big fan of the food trucks at Welcome to Thornbury.

Beloved Australian rock outfit Ocean Alley are thrilled to release their highly anticipated fourth album Low Altitude Living today.

Low Altitude Living is out now to stream and purchase HERE.
Listen to Low Altitude Living in Spatial Audio, exclusively on Apple Music.
A limited digital pressing is available via serenade.co

Produced by longtime collaborator Callum Howell, Low Altitude Living sees the six-piece construct their broadest ranging sonic framework yet, cohesively honouring the traditional features of their distinct sound, and equally give it a refreshing and exciting new edge. Across its 12 tracks, frontman Baden Donegal’s poetic lyricism communicates feelings of heartbreak, temptation and betrayal; balancing out these themes with a bright hopefulness on feel-good tracks like ‘Double Vision’ and the sensual, romantic ‘Perfume’.

Determined to constantly push their creative boundaries, the writing phase of this album saw Ocean Alley explore their musicality through an instinct and playfulness that allowed them to follow their jam sessions wherever they went. While the band have always worn the influence of 70s stalwarts such as Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin on their sleeves, the band have catapulted into a new frontier, guitarist Mitch Galbraith explaining “It’s all still centred around a rock guitar, but we might have gone a bit heavier in moments.”

Baden says “We’ve been a band for over 10 years now. Time and growing up are going to affect who we are, and what music we are playing.” Lach Galbraith (keys/vocals) adds “Pushing each other to try new things, inside and outside of music, is really important for us to keep things fresh. Musically our songwriting has become more intricate as we explore new styles and techniques in recording. Everything we put in is thoughtful and deliberate.”

From the thickly-textured ballad ‘Drinks and Cigars’ to the layered harmonies and sax solo on ‘Simple Pleasures’, Ocean Alley’s determination for constant evolution is at the forefront of each song, paving the way for the cinematic and otherworldly ‘Lapwing’, a 6-minute opus that closes the album. This is Ocean Alley at their most free, creative and adventurous; exemplifying why they continue on their unstoppable rise as one of Australia’s most exciting musical exports.

2022 has seen Ocean Alley perform 65 gigs around the world, having sold a cumulative 75,000+ tickets across their headline shows this year alone and still with a huge run of international headline dates and local festival performances to come – namely Falls Festival, Lost Paradise and Heaps Good Fest.

Low Altitude Living follows the success of 2020’s critically acclaimed Lonely Diamond which debuted at #1 on the ARIA Vinyl Chart and #3 on the Album Chart. The band have achieved 1x Double Platinum and 5x Gold-certified singles across Australia and New Zealand, as well as Gold certification on their 2018 breakthrough Chiaroscuro. With 550 million catalogue streams under their belt and counting, it feels like Ocean Alley are just getting started. They know who they are, and remain true to what serves them… As Baden explains, “Low altitude, being by the beach is where we all have the most peace. The title of the album doesn’t necessarily represent any one song in particular, or tie them all together. But it does tie our band to the music. I feel like it’s more of a title that describes why we sound like Ocean Alley.”

MayhemTom – Play Toff Melbourne Tonight 13 October!

by the partae October 13, 2022
written by the partae

Where are you currently based?
Melbourne.

How did you first start playing music?
I started with violin in primary school, moved to drums, piano, music theory and guitar in high school and beyond.

Please tell us how MayhemTom first came to be:
I started as a bass player vocalist, but moved to vocals alone as we got serious in a funk/rock band. The band was called Electric Mayhem, which is where Mayhemtom came from literally. I decided to put together songs for an album and came back to that name after trying to a few other names, only to find they were all taken!

What’s been happening recently with MayhemTom?
I have just released an album on streaming services, there is a vinyl edition on the way and we have been rehearsing for an Album launch taking place later this week.

Your album ‘The Art Of Flying While Falling’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?
It is an amalgamation of styles including straight Indie rock artists like Radiohead and The National to more folk/singer songwriters like Paul Kelly and Sufjan Stevens. The songwriting came from a period of stress and burnout during work as an oncologist. I hadn’t played regularly or written anything for over 15 years prior. The sounds are largely organic instruments including drums, piano, strings, guitar. But I love electronic music too and there are some synth sounds blended in too.

How did you go about writing?
Alot of the song came from moods/poetry which were put to chords. Previously I built songs around chords and I always drifted away from standard I, IV, V chords or threw in weird dissonant chords and pulled melodies to match the chords. For this, I allowed the melodies in my head to find the chords, so it is a bit more accessible but there are also some complex arrangements. Even time signatures, such as in the track Alone, which switches between 5/4 and 4/4 was built to fit the lyrics.

What does this album mean to you?
It’s an emotional outlet and what I had dreamt of doing when I first started playing in bands. Getting back to music has been rediscovering myself.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with?
I gathered together some professional musicians (Maria Moles drums, Peter Burgess bass, Paul Zubrinich keys) and recorded in a studio in Melbourne called Oaklands. The album was produced by an experienced producer Dusty Teal. The initial recording occurred in May 2021, but we were hampered by several COVID lockdowns. So while the bass, drums and some piano was done then, the rest we pieced together over several sessions later in 2021/2022. Some were back in the studio, the synths were done from home. The vocals were tracked in the producer’s home studio. The strings and backing vocals were done in separate studio sessions.

How did you approach the recording/production process?
I put together some complicated demos with the instrumentation I was after tracked on synth including the string parts. We worked on them as a band and pieced together the arrangements to suit the music and that’s what we took into the recording studio to put down. I then added synths, guitars and flourishes towards the end. The final mix was then mastered using Cloudbounce an AI service.

Who are you listening to at the moment?
My favourites mix currently has Josh Pyke, Talking Heads, Spacey Jane, Gang of Youths and Courtney Barnett. But an album I have on repeat ATM is Samora Pinderhughes “Grief”.

What do you like to do away from music?
I am a busy oncologist, so I deal with a lot of grief and death. Which is why finding my back to music has been so therapeutic.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2022 going into 2023?
We are looking at playing a bit more following the album launch including some local gigs as well as some smaller festivals over summer.

Favourite food and place to hangout?
I don’t really have a favourite food, but I pretty much love most South Indian curries my mum cooks. The band have a bit of history hanging out at pubs around Brunswick such as the Rainbow Hotel, The Standard or The Rose, so it’s always nostalgic heading back there.

KEN PAOLO & THE SPACE CADETS release grooving single ‘NATURAL WAYS’ a teaser of their forthcoming debut EP

by the partae October 13, 2022
written by the partae

The brilliant, and hypnotic musical creativity of Ken Paolo & The Space Cadets has returned in full bloom with latest single ‘Natural Ways’.

Soaring to new heights with genre-blending refinement, Ken Paolo’s latest single plays with various textures of RnB, funk soul to create a rewarding listen. The 5-piece band from Boorloo (Perth) find confidence with their fourth single, and showcase their jazz-laden grooves and stunning vocal acrobatics.

“‘Natural Ways’ is a high-energy affirmation about moving on from toxic situations. It is our most ambitious track with an addiction of a horn section.” Ken Paolo, Ken Paolo & The Space Cadets

Lyrically, ‘Natural Ways’ sees Ken Paolo more introspective than before, musing on the nuanced experience of love and loss and the ever morphing dynamics of relationships. This single is pulled from their forthcoming debut EP, a delightful taste of what’s to come.

After bursting onto the scene in 2021, the 5-piece band has launched into the hearts of music lovers and gained instant momentum. They’ve carved out a dedicated fan base with their incomparable live shows. Their genre-blurring mix of R&B, indie, electronica, pop and soul have made them “one of the state’s go-to live favourites” Pilerats.

Fronted by lead singer Ken Paolo, with the band – Cass on bass, Bob on keys, Kuda on drums and Persia on vocals, the band teamed up with up with Sam Ford (DICE, Siobhan Cotchin, Supathick) at Tone City Recording Studio for Mixing and Mastering. Fans of Kaiit, Ngaiire, and Jordan Rakei will find a new favourite in Ken Paolo.

Ken Paolo and The Space Cadet’s resume is slightly overwhelming for a band that only formed last year. Despite such a short time gigging, they’ve already found their groove, picking up national and local acclaim whilst they go. They’ve performed at RTRFM’s Winder Music Party, Hyperfest, Tonecity Recording label Launch, State Theatre Centre, KickstART Festival, Nannup Brewery Fest, and, not to mention sold-out headline shows at cherished venues Mojos, The Bird and 459 Rosemount.

Not only this, but in the truly supportive and collaborative climate of Western Australian music, they’ve played notable support slots for west-coast favourites such as Siobhan Cotchin, DICE, Supathick, Anesu, Nectar and King Blue.

This anticipated release follows up three previous singles ‘$4 Pizza’, ‘Heads at a Hundred’ and the groovy ToneCity Recording-produced ‘Dance With A Broken Heart’, which received strong community radio support and DSP editorial playlisting. Each previous single was added to Perth’s tastemaker station RTR FM’s esteemed sound selection alongside support from triple j, triple j Unearthed and 4ZZZ.

PRAISE FOR KEN PAOLO

“So lush and groovy. It’s still really tender but makes you groove”
triple j, Pip Rasmussen

“both Tyrone and I’s stank faces are getting a workout! Ken, your voice is out of this world and I’ve just added this song as a must-see live.”
triple j, Abby Butler

“Ken Paolo and company have been so generous to us with this one! Blessing us with their euphoric DIY disco, the band has harnessed the power of heart-healing funk.”
triple j Unearthed, Dave Ruby Howe

“Any aficionado of Perth’s live music scene would be quick to call Ken Paolo one of the most exciting artists in the city right now.”

HUNTLY Sign to Dot Dash / Remote Control + Release new single & video ‘Undertage’

by the partae October 13, 2022
written by the partae
Emotional dance music pioneers Huntly meld UK garage, breakbeat, electronic-pop and alternative R&B in their high-tempo new single ‘Undertage‘. It arrives alongside news of their signing to Dot Dash / Remote Control Records.

In Huntly’s signature polished and meticulous production style, the Melbourne-based duo fuse driving DnB breaks with silky R&B vocals and vulnerable lyricism on this track. On the subject matter, ‘Undertage’ is a unique insight into moments of pure happiness that come with newfound crushes and friendships. It also demonstrates Huntly’s exploration of intimacy in all forms; platonic is as important as romantic, and a love for your friends is equally as crucial as those feelings of deep love we can feel for romantic partners. Vocalist Elspeth Scrine expands saying “I wrote Undertage when I was overseas before the pandemic hit, in a steamy Berlin club that the track is named after. It has samples I recorded on my phone, outside the club and from hazy uber pool rides (remember those?). ‘Undertage’ is about that energy you get from a crush when you meet someone and wonder if you might end up together… when it’s all open and full of possibilities.”

They continue with how the visualiser came about, saying “It only made sense to us to make a visualiser for this song that compiled together video footage from our favourite club spaces here in our own community. It is a clip filled with the late night/early morning dancefloors that have held us, and the people who have healed us.”

Between Elspeth Scrine and Andrew Huhtanen McEwan there exists a strong creative partnership, one that has been built upon from years of friendship. This friendship has bred an intuitive and unique artistry; perfectly exemplified on the band’s acclaimed 2019 debut album, Low Grade Buzz. Its arrival in 2019 was a touchstone moment for Huntly; the album bringing domestic and global recognition for the act, and landing with impact. Low Grade Buzz, bold and striking in its tone and execution, positioned Huntly as a dynamic new force in the Australian music community. As the album cycle continued, the industry responded: Huntly earned nominations for the esteemed Australian Music Prize (2019), and at the AIR Awards (2020) for Best Independent Dance Album alongside industry figures such as Flume.

Acclaim came from radio and press tastemakers alike; Low Grade Buzz was named 3RRR’s Album of the Week while singles enjoyed premiere opportunities via triple j, as well as rotation adds across Australian channels including FBi Radio, MTV, SYN and Rage. Internationally Huntly’s music drew praise from outlets like Stereogum, Noisey and as part of Anthony Fantano’s weekly ‘Best Tracks’ round up on The Needle Drop. The release also saw Huntly featured as a Rising Artist by Vinyl Me Please, a placement marked by an exclusive vinyl release of Low Grade Buzz throughout North America. With singles featuring across countless Spotify editorial playlists, and a feature as Apple Music’s ‘Best New Artist Of The Week’, Low Grade Buzz swiftly garnered over one million streams and amassed widespread praise from industry and the loyal music community alike.

On the live front, Huntly have supported the likes of pop heavyweights such as G-Flip and experimental luminaries like Laurel Halo. Their dynamic live presence has graced the stages of queer clubs, to Melbourne Fashion Festival, from Mardi Gras, Midsumma, and Grampians Music Festival, all the way to YPSIGROCK Festival (Sicily).

Join Huntly as they cry on the many dance floors with ‘Undertage’.

Joshua Amour announces debut EP “I’m Trying” & shares new single ‘In My Mind’

by the partae October 13, 2022
written by the partae
Meanjin/Brisbane-based producer and DJ Joshua Amour continues his ascendant 2022 by today announcing his forthcoming debut EP, I’m Trying, due out Friday, November 18 on Astral People Recordings. Alongside the announcement, he also shares latest single and visualiser, ‘In My Mind’, out now.

Carried by an insistent, elastic synth line, ‘In My Mind’ starts somewhere near the lurching, strobe-lit melodicism of Overmono and ends up up as a deep breath of gratitude, resting beneath harmonious, cloud-soft pads, melancholic piano and spry handclaps. It’s yet another example of Amour’s exploratory, loving dedication to all shades of UK dance music – previewed on previous singles ‘Don’t Let Go’ and ‘Do Ya Love’ – as well as the gracious warmth that suffuses his productions.

Warm and organic, acoustically sweet yet processed and peculiarly moveable, I’m Trying is a generous reverie for the summertime, run through with a drowsy-eyed romanticism. Existing in those liminal, indefinable hours where late night melts away to early morning, Amour’s superbly textural debut EP gives shape and sound to those moments of everyday tenderness and clarity.

“I’m Trying is my first attempt at making a proper body of work,” explains Amour. “I wanted it to look and sound like summer. It’s the truest reflection of what I listen to and what I like about electronic music. It’s fun and melancholy and it’s me trying to take my production seriously.”

Only three singles into his nascent solo career, Amour has already amassed support and praise from FBi Radio, Clash Magazine, ACCLAIM Magazine, Purple Sneakers, Cool Accidents, SYN FM, Skope Magazine, Tone Deaf, BBC Radio 1Xtra’s Jamz Supernova, BBC 6 Music’s Deb Grant, The Blessed Madonna (who declared ‘Do Ya Love’ “really strong stuff across the board”) and more.

UPCOMING JOSHUA AMOUR TOUR DATES

Saturday, October 15 | Someday Soon, Manning House, Eora/Sydney | Tickets
Saturday, October 15 | Sideways, Ngunnawal/Canberra | Tickets

Across its five tracks, I’m Trying takes in the myriad strands of post-2000 UK dance music, compressing and reflecting these sounds back in an effortlessly sublime amalgam that brims with Amour’s palpable reverence. Stuttering to life with a jittery, 2-step inflected beat, bursts of deflated, synthetic horns and a shifting waterfall of chopped-and-screwed vocal samples, debut single ‘Don’t Let Go’ is Amour’s paean to the wistful, subdued syncopation of early 2010’s post-dubstep artists Mount Kimbie and XXYYXX. The undeniably gorgeous opening title track marries the twinkling, microtonal chimes of Four Tet’s electronica with sunnied yet bittersweet steel drums and a gently syncopated garage beat reminiscent of Jamie xx. ‘Do Ya Love’, with its pitch-shifted, chirpy vocal samples and irregular stabs of piano, leans into the more infectious side of UK Funky and Garage, not too far from something you would expect to hear at the ebullient crest of a Conducta mix.

With I’m Trying, Joshua Amour has crafted a love letter to the artists, communities and relationships that have shaped him. Moving with a dreamlike quality, it takes in everything from his earliest musical influences to the openhearted dance scene in Meanjin/Brisbane that has fostered and matured alongside him, to the limitless discovery potential of the internet, to his childhood friend Genesis Owusu, whom Amour cut his teeth touring with, to his partner dameeeela, whom he can often be found DJing alongside across the city. Throughout, he channels the bliss of finding a space which is uniquely reflective of yourself.
