by the partae August 5, 2022

Tetsuians have cemented themselves in the Melbourne/Naarm live music landscape with their unique mixture of punchy indie riffs and melodic undertones.

Recently the band released the excellent first single for ‘Shadow In The Sky’ from their upcoming third album. The band now follow it up with their second single, ‘Walk It Off’ out today.

With influences from Wilco, Supergrass and Wild Flag, ‘Walk It Off’ comes from Tetsuians’ third album Repairs and Alterations, heralds a bigger sound, with smooth licks and refined song writing, set for release on the 30th of August 2022.

DULCIE serve up another dose of insatiable indie pop with ‘COLD HARD TRUTH’ August Australian tour announced!

Dulcie are back with brand new music to bring the band and their growing legion of fans into the second half of 2022! New single ‘Cold Hard Truth’ is a bright step forward for the Perth pop group, whose music has been capturing the attention of audiences around the country throughout the year.

Following on from strong releases in ‘Nothing Left’ and ‘tell ur friends’, the new single from Dulcie continues to spotlight the girls’ sharp ear for tone, harmonies and songwriting skill. Fresh off the back of their sold out regional tour supporting the irrepressible Amy Shark, the arrival of ‘Cold Hard Truth’ serves as the perfect accompaniment to Dulcie’s new tour news: an August run that will bring the group back to the East Coast and home again.

 STREAM

‘Cold Hard Truth’ comes as another collaboration between Dulcie and Joel Quartermain (Eskimo Joe), while Cam Parkin (Owl Eyes) and Leon Zervos (Troye Sivan, Daniel Johns) handled mixing and final mastering, respectively. The song itself was recorded at Ash Carr-White’s home in Middle Swan, Perth. Of the track, Dulcie explain that ‘Cold Hard Truth’ is focused on exploring feelings of uncertainty and frustration in navigating a potential new relationship.

“‘Cold Hard Truth’ explores the frustration, insecurity and longing that comes from not knowing if someone feels the same way you do. It’s all about that waiting period, where you want them to make a move before you do!

“I originally wrote this song to be much slower and stripped back, but after workshopping it with the band and our producer it’s taken on a more punchy indie pop sound, which I love! We recorded it in my living room with Joel Quatermain and spent most of our time finding the perfect synth layers and midi sounds to bring it to life.”
ASH CARR-WHITE, DULCIE

Dulcie’s return to touring in August comes at a perfect time for the group, having spent recent months travelling throughout Western Australia with Amy Shark, but also reconnecting with home out West after having spent much of 2022 playing on their biggest stages yet supporting Ocean Alley (a tour that sold in excess of 40,000 tickets).

The release of ‘tell ur friends’ and ‘Nothing Left’ fuelled the momentum surrounding Dulcie in the first half of 2022; the girls earning triple j rotation (‘tell ur friends’), strong praise from Australian music media including NME Australia, Music Feeds and AAA Backstage. Developing a strong presence on community radio too, Dulcie have solidified their presence in 2022 as a group to watch thanks to extensive Apple Music and Spotify love, surpassing 35,000 monthly listeners on Spotify alone.

PRAISE FOR DULCIE

“With each release, Dulcie’s pop muscle gets stronger and stronger. So does their straight-from-the-heart songwriting that’s been their superpower since the very beginning.”
Triple J Unearthed, Abby Butler (‘Nothing Left’, 2022)

“The new Dulcie era isn’t here to wait for you, it yanks your wrist and takes you for a ride you won’t regret.”
Triple J, Declan Byrne (‘Nothing Left’, 2022)

“I really dug their former organic ensemble sound, but DAMN if they don’t absolutely nail this pop thang!”
Triple J, Al Newstead (‘tell ur friends’, 2022)

“…infectiously sassy, uplifting, and shows perfectly just how the group have evolved these past few years.”
Backseat Mafia (‘tell ur friends’, 2022)

“Leaning into more pop-based sonics, the dynamic track shows a different side to the trio, bringing a simmering confidence and their signature captivating harmonies.”
Milky Milky Milky (‘Nothing Left’, 2022)

Stream ‘Wicked Sunday’

Returning with a shiny new slice of dark-wave psychedelia is Meanjin/Brisbane-based alt-rock group Dream Dali. Their immersive new track ‘Wicked Sunday’ is out on August 5.

Turning heads with their debut EP ‘Life in Legato’ in 2021, and following up with the recent release of the psychedelic and cinematic ‘Rosary’, the group is a trio of experienced musicians who have played for artists such as Vera Blue, Daniel Johns, Kite String Tangle and Miami Horror. As Dream Dali, they have supported the likes of Phoenix, Washed Out and Empire of the Sun, and showcased at BIGSOUND in 2019.

Known for their uniquely artistic live performances, Dream Dali’s music is paired with white lighting, set to a backdrop of visuals from Dada films and black and white surrealist imagery from the 1930s, creating a truly mesmerising musical experience.

This new track further bolsters Dream Dali’s mission to immerse listeners in their conceptual multi-sensory surrealist world of cinematic alt-dance-rock. ‘Wicked Sunday’ is abuzz with crunchy synths, a drama-filled dance-rock drum beat, and satisfying electric guitar atmospheres that are unashamedly 80s. The icing on the top of this cosmic cake is the song’s evocative lyrics, delivered in lead singer Aldous Emerson’s signature dreamy style.

Alluring and hypnotic, this is a superbly catchy tune that will have listeners dancing and shaking it all off. It’s a dance-inducing triumph over heavy feelings and disappointment, as Emerson explains:

“Wicked Sunday is written about those times when you wake to a huge weight of the day. Exploring depression and trying to build yourself back up when you feel people have let you down.”

The band has inspired airplay from the likes of 4ZZZ, The Most (NZ), 2SER and many more as well as scoring features on a multitude of independent playlists including Pilerats, Music Feeds, Tone Deaf, AAA Backstage, Australian Musician, Aus Music Scene and much more.

Let Dream Dali immerse you in their sonic surrealism with ‘Wicked Sunday’, out everywhere from August 5.

Stream ‘Sweet Summer Nights’

Gold Coast (Yugambeh Country) based First Nations acoustic-pop artist Dani Teveluwe (pronounced ‘tee-va-loo’) is whisking us away on a summer breeze with her new song ‘Sweet Summer Nights’, which will be released on August 5 ahead of her debut EP ‘Into The Deep’, due out on September 2.

Already adept at performing to enamoured crowds, the former teacher has graced stages with Jaguar Jonze, Loose Content, Sofia Isella and Local Safari, and has toured for her single ‘Waiting Wasting Time’ with Death by Denim and Old Mervs.

A skillful singer-songwriter brimming with talent, Teveluwe is taking flight with her optimistic, upbeat music, starting with this first release from a stellar debut EP.

Opening with a meandering acoustic guitar melody and Dani’s arresting vocals, this is an instantly uplifting and sweetly soulful tale of a summer romance. The acoustic guitar is elevated by a feel-good beat and shiny layer of electro-pop shimmer, dreamy ‘ooh’s’ and the celestial infusion of the sah u – a coconut Thai violin (played by Peranya Visitchantaragoon). Prettily playing on those summer night feels, ‘Sweet Summer Nights’ carries its intent from lyrics through to instrumentation, transporting listeners to a balmy night, dancing under a moonlit sky, embracing sun-soaked skin and welcoming the delight of a romantic encounter.

A tune that came about effortlessly as an ode to a Lana Del Rey song, Teveluwe explains:

“Sweet Summer Nights was written in ten minutes and is a pure stream of consciousness. At the time I had been playing Lana Del Rey’s Summertime Sadness a lot and had fallen in love with the song all over again. Sitting in the afternoon sunshine, the song came to life effortlessly and soon became one of my favourite tracks (from the EP).”

Teveluwe has made strides to push herself out of her comfort zone and into a life that just felt right for her. It seemed impossible at first, but feeling inspired by a David Bowie quote, with the addition of hard work, and plenty of courage, she’s reaping the rewards, and making fans across the globe, boasting airplay on 4ZZZ locally, being named a local artist to watch by Tone Deaf, and also receiving spins internationally in the US, UK, Namibia, Argentina, Brazil, Italy, Romania and Canada.

‘Sweet Summer Nights’ will be warming us up from August 5, with EP ‘Into The Deep’ following on September 2. Catch Dani Teveluwe when she supports Andy Martin at two shows on the Gold Coast (Yugambeh Country), at the Burleigh Bazaar on Saturday 20th August, and again at the Bearded Dragon in Mt Tamborine on Sunday 21st August.

Pissed-Off Punk Is Alive And Well On Biting New Track ‘A Simple Fuck You’ From Nocturnal Animals

Stream ‘A Simple Fuck You’

Scathing punk-rock and tongue-in-cheek sass collide on the new track ‘A Simple Fuck You’ from Adelaide/Tarndanya trio Nocturnal Animals, out on August 5.

Well-versed in producing high energy, angst-driven alt-rock/punk anthems, this is the group’s third new release this year, following the invigorating ‘Where’s My Mind Been?’ and pop-punk dance-worthy belter ‘Dancing In The Blood’. They’ve just shared the stage with The Buoys in support of Psychedelic Porn Crumpets on the local leg of their album tour, have previously supported DZ Deathrays, and have also played to sold-out crowds in their hometown for four of their own headline shows.

Now, they’re hitting where it hurts with post-breakup bitterness, but in a way that just sounds so good, with the punchy ‘A Simple Fuck You’.

This new track wishes a scathing series of ‘bad day’ moments upon its subject, and will definitely raise some eyebrows. We can all agree that losing your headphones genuinely sucks, and would usually be the kind of thing you wouldn’t wish upon anyone – except maybe your ex. Driven by its catchy, tongue-in-cheek lyrics, ‘A Simple Fuck You’ soars with smacking drums, gritty riffs and a headbanging rhythm, all amplified by a couple of sudden pauses that emphasise the energy as the whole band joins in for the powerful final chorus, with a few gutsy screams thrown in for good measure.

Those slap-in-the-face shocks of moments that would ruin your day are just so satisfying to sing along to. As straightforward as its title implies, the band tells us:

“‘A Simple Fuck You’ is a song that keeps it short & sweet, it’s a simple fuck you done with a smile.”

Proving that punk is certainly not dead, Nocturnal Animals previous releases have seen support from Triple J, Triple J Unearthed, Hysteria Mag, AAA Backstage, Punktuation Mag, Heavy Mag, The Faction, Aus Music Scene, Scenestr, Moody Music Blog, Eat This Music, Radio Adelaide, 3RRR, idobi Radio, and more.

This Nocturnal Animals belter ‘A Simple Fuck You’ will be stuck in your head from its August 5 release date. The band will be touring with Jurassic (Melbourne) and Deadshowws (Newcastle) celebrate; more information below.

Tied Down

by the partae August 5, 2022
written by the partae

Where are you currently based?

Tied Down is currently based in Perth WA

How did the band form?

We had a pretty funny startup: Deano (drums) & Kado (rhythm guitar) have been mates since they were about 4 years old and always jammed together. I (CJ – vocals) played footy with Kado and decided to head around to jam with the both of them and covered The Comedown by Ocean Alley. As soon as we finished the song we kind of looked at each other like, “ahh that was actually pretty good” haha. Steve (lead guitar) was the wild chance meeting as the boys met him on the roof of a hostel in Tokyo while over there for Fuji Rock Festival which still is pretty unbelievable how that panned out. Papa D (Dolsy – bass) was the last pickup as he went to school with Kado. They hadn’t seen each other for a while then saw each other at a local hardware store and Kado gave the invite to come have a splash with us!

What’s been happening recently?

Gigs, gigs, gigs. We’ve been on a massive run of shows in the last couple of months playing our Undefeated single launch, two gigs alongside Gyroscope and sold out shows with South Summit & Saviour! It’s been an unreal run of gigs and we’re thankful for the opportunities!

Your latest single ‘Undefeated’ will be out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

Undefeated as a whole to me is a powerful anti-suicide note. We wanted to make an up-tempo, uplifting track about pushing through all the shit you have to go through in everyday life and not giving up no matter what. This track pulled a lot from our heavier influences like Title Fight, Trophy Eyes and Basement while keeping our trademark punk rock sound. We couldn’t be happier with the way it turned out!

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with?

We rolled this one through our mate Matt Templeman again as we did for our last single Slow.
Temps is great to work with and provided a lot of the drive for the track. We also had drum tech extraordinaire Fraser Cringle and riff king Scott Kay work with us then had it produced by Simon Struthers. Such a great time working with all of them and they really helped us get the most out of the track.

Please tell us about how important it is to you to touch on deeper topics through your lyrics:

Great question. For me, I determine what I want to touch on once I’ve completely immersed myself into the roots of the song musically. I heard the shell of Undefeated and knew instantly what I wanted it to delve into. Like I said, this song is a fuck you to suicide and all the mental breakdowns that can try and push you towards breaking point and being able to have the resilience to say, nah not today. As a collective, I think all of us at TD believe in writing meaningful music and really don’t want to be putting out standard tracks talking about the same old shit.

Please tell us about your process of lyric writing:

Haha, lyrics are a funny one for me.
I listen to the shell of our music at its birth then I generally take it home with me on earphones and start listening on repeat. I’ve always had a knack for writing hooks and melodies really easily so I’ll normally start singing made up words in the order I want them to go. At any given time I probably have 5 different topics with some choruses ready to go so I’ll place the one in there that fits the music the best and then send it to the boys, get some feedback and work on it from there. I won’t stop until I know I have the right combination of words and that I’ve packed as much meaning and punch that I possibly can. Apart from all that, the most important part of the lyrics writing process is probably coffee haha.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

We’ve got a big mixture going on at the moment. The Tied Down playlist is a mixed bag of artists and genres but I’ll namedrop a few that we’re on at the moment: South Summit, Posseshot, Angie Colman, Speed, Lilos, Joan & The Giants & Ratsalad to name a few!

What’s the Perth music scene like right now?

The place to be baby! Sick shows every week, new singles every week, loads of radio play, bands heading over east. It’s literally all happening and it feels like it’s long overdue!

Plans for the remainder of 2022 going into 2023?

We’re knocking up a solid end of year run including another show or two with South Summit in September, heading up to Geraldton with Ratsald in October and then hitting Sydney for a couple shows in November as our first trip to the East Coast! We’ve set some time aside for writing and recording so we can hopefully spoil everyone with some new bangers shortly!

Favourite food and place to hangout?

At the moment I can’t stop smashing the pizza. Should probably have shares in my local pizzeria the way I’m flying through it aha. I love hanging out in any creative space – jam rooms, small time acoustic gigs or literally just an air BNB with a good crew and a couple instruments. Creativity breeds creativity yo!

ROBINSON RETURNS WITH REFLECTIVE NEW SINGLE, TEENAGE RENEGADE

by the partae August 2, 2022
written by the partae

NZ-born, London-based artist Robinson ushers in an exciting new musical chapter with latest single Teenage Renegade

LISTEN TO TEENAGE RENEGADE HERE

ALREADY ADDED TO OVER 14 TOP PLAYLISTS INCLUDING NEW MUSIC FRIDAY AU & UK, GET POPPED, NEW POP PICKS, BREAKING HITS, POP N FRESH AND MORE.

HITTING 60K STREAMS IN JUST TWO DAYS!

Have you ever stumbled upon a photograph of a cherished life highlight and experienced a thrilling emotional flashback? Listening to Robinson’s reflective new single Teenage Renegade, unleashes similarly vivid nostalgic reminiscences. During the chorus of her brand-new single – an irresistibly catchy slice of wistful pop brilliance – Robinson laments the loss of her inner-rebel: “I was a teenage renegade/ How’d I end up so afraid?”

Kicking off with a cruisy, pulsing beat, Teenage Renegade’s arrangement builds gradually, with dreamy washes of synth and jaunty drumming underscoring Robinson’s majestic vocal performance. Once the full-tilt chorus hits, with Robinson waxing lyrical about her unshakeable younger self – “She was a blue hot summer in the middle of July/ She wanted everything she couldn’t have and nothing made her cry…” – the soaring vocal melodies call to mind reckless abandon, like poking your head out the sunroof to inhale the salty sea air during a carefree, spontaneous road trip down the coast.

“I used to be so reckless/ How could I forget this? / Wasting my time / Used to wanna run / Don’t know where that girl has gone.”

So why is it that we tend to lose our sense of childlike wonder as we get older? “When we’re young, we often have a blissful unawareness of the consequences and do things without a second thought,” Anna Robinson – the remarkable New Zealand-born, London-based artist who releases music under her surname, Robinson – ponders. “But as we experience pain, loss and hurt, we start to walk through life more carefully, protecting our hearts.”

When Robinson met her manager, Jeff Figueroa of Patriot Management, the stars aligned. During her first LA song writing trip post-lockdown, he set up a co-writing session with songwriter/producer Tyler Spry – one of just a handful of co-producers, outside of the band, who’s collaborated with global hitmakers OneRepublic – and Areli Castro.

The night before Robinson’s scheduled session in LA, she recalls circling around “four nostalgic chords” on the piano. “I mentally went to the joyful moments of my childhood and teenage years – channelling a fearless version of myself – and the verse melody and lyrics sort of fell out together,” she recounts.

On collaborating with Spry and Areli, Robinson enthuses, “They are both so incredibly talented and, from the first moment we worked together, I just knew we were on the same page creatively. The whole atmosphere was so fluid and exciting. We went deep into discussing how invincible you feel in your youth and questioned the way many of us doubt ourselves and become more fearful as we get older. Tyler was playing these incredibly inspiring sounds and the three of us were all melodically bouncing off each other.”

From this session, Teenage Renegade emerged, and it wasn’t until Robinson heard the fruits of their labour that she recognised this song’s verse closely resembled the very same piano chords she’d been tinkering with the night prior (albeit a few octaves lower and with revised lyrics).

When she first listened to the Teenage Renegade demo, Robinson recalls, “My whole heart lit up, because we had written an anthem for the part of us that longs to be fearless, our inner Teenage Renegade. I wrote this song to remind myself that inside us all is a wild, joyful soul that needs to be free in all of our beauty. We are all teenage renegades at heart.”

Teenage Renegade also signals a creative reawakening for the newly independent Robinson, who was  previously signed to Sony Music and released her hit record Nothing to Regret that was certified double-platinum in Australia and reaching over 120M streams. “Whether you’re independent or signed, the biggest necessity is feeling self-assured and supported enough to express yourself freely and make the music you want to make,” she says.

Having already ticked off many bucket list international festival appearances, Robinson has also performed sold-out headline shows at the Queen Of Hoxton in London and toured with global success stories including Hayley Kiyoko, Lany, Dean Lewis and Dermot Kennedy.

Robinson has never felt more ready to turn her artistic vision for this project into reality and can’t wait to release her new music. She also looks forward to gracing many more stages the world over. Prepare to be wowed.

Melbourne’s OKAY DANE make a huge splash with energetic new track ‘GOLDFISH’

by the partae August 2, 2022
written by the partae

After what seems like an eternity trapped indoors, Melbourne alternative rock group Okay Dane finally re-emerge ready and rearing to bring their new music and live show to stages across the country.

With their new single, ‘Goldfish’, the band displays front and centre their ability to craft a well written and energetic song without losing any of the energy and excitement they have become known for across their most recent releases, ‘Different Waves’ and ‘Thread’.

The release of ‘Goldfish’ proves again that Okay Dane only continue to make each release better than the previous, showing that the sky’s the limit for the Melbourne locals.

‘Goldfish’, like Okay Dane’s previous releases, features raw and passionate vocal delivery and melodies accompanied by soaring guitar lines guaranteed to drive any crowd into a frenzy, not dissimilar to bands like Sly Withers, WAAX and Semantics. Recorded at Sunset Pig studios in Melbourne, ‘Goldfish’ saw Okay Dane work with Sam Swain and Sam Sproull to create an energetic anthem ripe for moshing along to.

Says songwriter Jake Kougioumtzis, ‘Goldfish’ is an expression of the struggles they have experienced over the past year.

“‘Goldfish was written over half a year starting in the middle of the 2021 Melbourne lockdowns, it started out as just being a reflection of how I was feeling with the isolation, missing family and friends and longing to play live again.”

“As it evolved with re-writes and collaborations with the band it has become a reminder of where we were and not to take any of those things for granted”

Okay Dane, Jake Kougioumtzis

PRAISE FOR OKAY DANE

Duke Boara announces extensive double concept LP ‘11AM/11PM’ tapes on LG105

by the partae August 2, 2022
written by the partae

First drop ‘All Winter/Switch’ out now, full double mixtape 7th October

Featuring previous landmark releases inc. ‘Wairau Bay’ and ‘Rain’

Support from Spotify Fresh Finds, Chill Tracks, New Music Friday Cratediggers, Qrion’s Track IDs, Ibiza Sunset; Apple Music Loops, New In Electronic, New Music Daily, New In Dance; BBC Radio 1 Dance, R1 Relax, Triple J, SiriusXM; Laurent Garnier, Sasha, Jaguar

A suitably bold step from Duke Boara, so early in his already successful (5m+ streaming stats) career, with his double mixtape project ‘11AM/11PM Tapes’. The first drop with ‘All Winter’ (11AM) and ‘Switch’ (11PM) is out now on LG105, champions of alternative electronic talent such as Mall Grab, Effy, Beka, Lawrence Hart, bad tuner and Model Man.

At only 23, multi-instrumentalist /producer Duke Boara aka James Toomey has curated 26 tracks for morning and night; expect a genre-busting melange of lo-fi, breakbeat, melodic, lively summer-infused house, percussion… and playing piano, guitar and drums throughout.

First release ‘All Winter’ (11AM) features a pure and simple finger-pick acoustic guitar melody reminiscent of falling snow, spiced with sitar sounds. Elegiac but upbeat. ‘Switch’ (11PM) is a night-friendly switch to a funkier beat, with jazzy staccato synth and strong percussion, in a build/break structure – one for the dancefloor.

Also included are Toomey’s previous breakthrough tracks ‘Wairau Bay’ (2.7million streams on Spotify), ‘Rain’ (1.2million), ‘Talking to Strangers’, ‘Bring the Gold’, and his debut ‘Focus’ (with Radio 1 support).

Five years living and travelling in Asia allowed world music and instruments such as the sitar to enrich the style of West Country lad Toomey, now London-based, who obsessively taught himself to produce while at college on Tyneside. Now with over 5 million Spotify streams, support across streaming platforms, media and top tier radio, Duke Boara’s name, though new, is growing fast.

There will be a second drop released August 31st before the full double-mixtape drops in October.

‘All Winter/Switch’ are out now.

Adelaide/Tarndanya-based alternative / prog-rock psychedelia stars SOMNIUM invite listeners to fly into the light and imagine the afterlife with their trippy trance-inducing ‘What Would You Be When You Die?’, out NOW.

With a sound that is depicted by hypnotic motifs, punchy riffs and floating melodies, they’ve enchanted crowds at sold-out shows supporting Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, and shared the stage with heavyweights including King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, Pond, Mild High Club, The Belligerents, Ecca Vandal, The Babe Rainbow, Buried Feather and more.

Hot on the tails of their hypnotic single ‘Truth Set Me Free’, the second release from the band for the year is an adventurous exploration into a swirling haze of psychedelic soundscapes.

‘What Would You Be When You Die?’ is a track that is thought-provoking and philosophical, yet manages to still feel lighthearted. As the title suggests, it explores reincarnation, but with the possibilities imagined taking an unexpectedly amusing turn.

Thundering rolls of drums, distinct psych-swirls of fuzzy riffs and plenty of prog-rock panache, this swaying soundscape digs deep with melancholically-tinged bass, then eases into a slowly spiralling meander through its mind-melting melody. The drift is boldly bookended with clean-cut, playful percussion that drives up the energy, and a dousing of drowned-out vocals that warp in accordance with the melody.

‘What Would You Be When You Die?’ takes a peek into the spiritual realm and entertains the possibilities of what comes next. The lyrics explore imaginative ideas of being reborn as a mountain goat with wings, and a kangaroo that can sing – among other kooky things. SOMNIUM explains further:

“‘What Would You Be When You Die?’ is a witty delve into reincarnation and the afterlife. The lyrical themes ponder philosophical questions and satirical potentials of the unknown. All this tied in with strong fuzzy riffage, bombastic thunder drums and eerie melodic vocals combusts to form a down-tuned and driving prog-rock song.”

SOMNIUM is turning heads both locally and across the pond, having their latest track added to rotation on a multitude of stations including Southern FM (VIC), 2SER (NSW), RDU (New Zealand), and Radio Wigwam (UK). The track has also been played on Radio Adelaide, 5ZZZ, Tribe FM, 2BBB, 5WOW, Three D Radio, 4ZZZ and more.

Get lost in the whirlpool of wondering ‘what comes next?’ with SOMNIUM’s ‘What Will You Be When You Die?’

“Straight out of a Quentin Tarantino soundtrack, The Steele Syndicate’s new single ‘Sedona’ is a rollicking adventure through brassy synth stabs, rumbling drum patterns, liberal smatterings of ‘wooaahhhs’ and an ending that would leave Peter Allen smiling (maracas are optional).”

The undeniably catchy and very relatable track, ‘One Beer (Is Never Enough)’ is the latest from Brisbane/Meanjin’s funk-rock and groove gods The Steele Syndicate – a brass-led banger being released alongside the accompanying music video on July 29.

The exceptionally talented eight-piece’s live, raucous energy has made them a festival favourite, with appearances at 2021’s Woodford Folk Festival, Caloundra Music Festival, Mitchell Creek Festival, Tablelands Folk Festival and headlining Summer Sounds in Melbourne/Naarm. The octet boasts a four-piece horn section, and rhythm section to match – and will get a crowd on their feet in no time.

With three EP’s already under their belt, The Steele Syndicate are gearing up for the release of their debut album in October – kicking things off with the brilliantly infectious ‘One Beer (Is Never Enough)’.

A manifesto about having an insatiable appetite for a good time and all the beverages that are inevitably enjoyed to get there, the song will draw a smile with its playful chants, and perhaps a chuckle as the stakes escalate in a cheeky fashion with each verse. Though a very fun and danceable number, as it progresses ‘One Beer (Is Never Enough)’ will get right into the feels as the lyrics acknowledge an unquenchable thirst. The anthem is boosted by an indulgence of brass with trumpet, trombone and two saxophones bringing the unabashed energy, a sobering moment of vocals underpinned by standalone piano, and guitar and drums blazing throughout.

Written during one of the very moments that it so perfectly captures, The Steele Syndicate reflect on where it all began:

“‘One Beer’ was born in the studio, the lead hook emerging from a chant over some end of the day drinks. The song just got bigger and bigger. Horns, guitar solos and call and response vocals made it an instant crowd favourite.”

Gesturing to the deeper meaning at the core of the track, the group says it is, “A song for those who don’t believe in having too much of a good thing – until they do.”

It’s an epic party tune and vibrant anthem for having drinks with mates, getting carried away with the night and ensuring your cup is never empty. The accompanying video plays out variations on scenes of precisely that – including a classic game of Goon of Fortune, an activity that is quintessential to Aussie drinking culture – and one that always takes things to a new level as the video shows. You can never have enough – or can you?

Crack open a cold one and get ready for a good time with ‘One Beer (Is Never Enough)’ single and video when they’re served up on July 29.

The Dandys Release Huge Knife-Edged Track ‘Take You Home’

by the partae August 1, 2022

Previous Support For The Dandys

“There is something so cheeky about this track. When the chorus hits I’m smiling ear to ear.”
(Lu Hill, Triple J) [About ‘Lemons’]

“Known for their unhinged live shows and deep trench indie rock, The Dandys have completed the ritual and summoned their latest single into this world.”
(Livewire AU) [About ‘Lemons’]

“Meanjin darlings The Dandys are quickly become one of the ‘it’ bands to emerge from the banks of the Maiwar for quite some time, their riveting, irresistible, grungy indie rock
appealing to ears and dancing feet alike.”

“You guys are pillars of the local music scene…”
(Michael Hudson, 4ZZZ)

 Stream ‘Take You Home’

Hitting airwaves with plenty of ooft is this huge tune from Brisbane/Meanjin’s grungy, alt-rock newcomers The Dandys. ‘Take You Home’ makes its debut on July 29, and will nestle itself comfortably in playlists from then onwards.

They may be fresh on the scene, but The Dandys are already making waves with killer live sets and a sound that instantly manages to feel both familiar and brand new. The group flourished out of a uni project late last year and have wasted no time in clocking up gigs, playing at Teneriffe Festival, selling out their first single launch at The Blackbear Lodge and playing alongside industry heavyweights Peach Fur and The Dreggs, as well as supporting Bakers Eddy on their tour earlier this year. Not. Mucking. Around.

Armed with two epic tracks up their sleeve, ‘Good Life’ and ‘Lemons’, The Dandys are unveiling another straight-up banger – this time, with a sweet touch of pop sensibility that allows Mads Protheroe’s voice to shine above the grungy goodness.

‘Take You Home’ is all about the thrill of the chase. The track’s bold bassline is submerged in an addictive alt-rock rhythm that blends beautifully with its softer hooks and a chorus swimming in pools of desire. The tune subtly creeps in and latches on, building toward an effortless drum and lead guitar breakdown that soars. It’s only fair to instantly hit repeat.

On the surface, the song’s lyrics could appear to be an insistent plea for a date, but delving a little deeper reveals that the song was written with more sinister desires in mind, as lead singer Mads Protheroe elaborates:

“At the time, I had been listening to a lot of serial killer podcasts and I decided it would be an interesting approach to write from the perspective of one and try and get out of my head all the time and in theirs a little bit. It was a really different way from how my lyrics usually come about, but it’s basically a song about a one-night stand, from the perspective of a serial killer. Instead of picking up a date, he’s picking up a victim.”

This gang of talented muso’s (who are definitely not serial killers) will be bringing their riveting indie-rock goodness to stages very soon. Head to Black Bear Lodge on Friday 26th August for the single launch of ‘Take You Home’, which will be supported by Square, SAMMM. and Flamingo Blonde ending the night with a DJ set.
