The Academic Release Debut Album ‘Tales From The Backseat’ Today (12th January)
Irish indie rockers The Academic come roaring into 2018 with the release of their debut album Tales From The Backseat today (order here), a record possessing an energy and youthful vigour that could really take the band to a whole new level.
Recorded in LA with producer Tim Pagnotta (Dream Car, Wilde Belle, Saint Motel), Tales From The Backseat is the quartet’s reflection on life growing up in rural Ireland and offers some of their most accomplished songwriting to date.
From lead single ‘Different’, a driving foot-stomping anthem, to the viral sensation ‘Bear Claws’ and funk-infused previous single ‘Why Can’t We Be Friends?’, it’s no wonder the four-piece have been earmarked by Phil Taggartas one of Ireland’s biggest emerging acts, having also attracted widespread BBC Radio 1 airplay from Annie Mac(Hottest Record) and Huw Stephens.

The band have since been invited to support acts including The Strokes, Twenty One Pilots, Noel Gallagher, The Kooks and Catfish And The Bottlemen, alongside attracting praise from the likes of The New York Times, The Independent and NME which has seen their profile rise further.
Lead singer Craig Fitzgerald states: “In a world where there is a lot of seriousness we wanted to make a record that might take people away for a minute with our music – it’s a fun record with lots of energy. We wanted it to be infectious with an honest enthusiasm which I think we achieved”.

Irish breakout four-piece The Academic share new single Why Can’t We Be Friends?, their sleek, funk-infused take on volatile romance.
With a delectable bass groove and a chorus that will worm its way into your consciousness, the quartet’s latest release is another taster from their eagerly anticipated debut album Tales From The Backseat out 12th January.
Recorded in LA with producer Tim Pagnotta (Dreamcar, Wilde Belle, Saint Motel), their debut record offers some of the band’s most accomplished songwriting yet. From the anthemic alt-rock mastery of ‘Bear Claws’ to the infectious, joyful exuberance of previous single ‘Permanent Vacation’, the songs take aim at the turbulence of growing into your twenties – loss of innocence, wariness of adulthood, unease with and ultimate acceptance of the inevitability of growing up.
Having spent the last two years touring throughout the US, UK and Europe, the young indie outfit have been fast building a dedicated grassroots following. With a growing reputation for their explosive, high-octane live show, which has not gone unnoticed, the band have been invited to support acts including The Strokes, Twenty One Pilots, Noel Gallagher and Catfish And The Bottlemen. Currently on a full European tour supporting The Kooks this month, their profile is only set to rise further.
Alongside critical praise from the likes of The New York Times, The Independent and The Irish Times, not to mention widespread BBC Radio 1 airplay from Annie Mac and Huw Stephens, the four-piece have been earmarked by Phil Taggart as one of Ireland’s biggest emerging acts, drawing welcome comparisons to fellow Irishmen Two Door Cinema Club amongst others.
Why Can’t We Be Friends?, produced by Tim Pagnotta (Dreamcar, Wilde Belle, Saint Motel), will be available on all platforms 16th November.

“Catchy as hell” – The Independent
“It’s time to jump on the bandwagon, these guys are going to be big” – The Irish Times
Irish indie rockers The Academic have announced details on their eagerly anticipated debut album ‘Tales From The Backseat’ out 12th January.
Recorded in LA with producer Tim Pagnotta (Dreamcar, Wilde Belle, Saint Motel), ‘Tales From The Backseat’ offers some of The Academic’s most accomplished songwriting yet. From the anthemic alt-rock mastery of ‘Bear Claws’ to the infectious, joyful exuberance of brand new single ‘Permanent Vacation’, the songs take aim at the turbulence of growing into your twenties – loss of innocence, wariness of adulthood, unease with and ultimate acceptance of the inevitability of growing up.
Largely penned while the band was still in their teens, they draw inspiration from a vast catalogue of influences including early Arctic Monkeys, American Football and sleek early Motown production, with latest cut and infectious album highlight ‘Permanent Vacation’ demonstrating the band’s undoubted indie pop sensibilities.
Having spent the better part of two years building a strong grassroots following with tours across the US and Europe, the quartet have become well-accustomed to the live environment. Support slots for acts including The Strokes, Pixies, Noel Gallagher and Catfish And The Bottlemen have expanded their fanbase considerably, and with a full European tour supporting The Kooks next month this is only set to grow further.
The band also recently created a viral video for previous release ‘Bear Claws’, in which they discovered a way to ‘hack’ the natural time delay in Facebook Live’s stream to create a visual audio loop pedal. With over 1.5 million views in less than a week and coverage from outlets including Reddit, Mashable and NME, the first-of-its-kind video has provided a significant boost to their profile.
Permanent Vacation, produced by Tim Pagnotta (Dreamcar, Wilde Belle, Saint Motel), will be available on all platforms 27th October.
The Academic is Craig Fitzgerald (vox/guitar), Dean Gavin (drums) and brothers Matt (lead guitar) and Stephen Murtagh (bass).

Irish Indie Rockers The Academic Go Viral With First Ever Facebook Live ‘Loop Pedal’ Performance
Watch in full here
Irish indie foursome The Academic have pulled off a first-of-its-kind Facebook Live performance of their latest single Bear Claws using the audio/video time lag to create a cool visual loop pedal (watch here).
The band rearranged each instrument on “Bear Claws” to fit Facebook Live’s delay, with each loop getting more complex, adding instruments, rhythms, and melodies. Additionally, by projecting the video live from a soundstage they created an infinite tunnel consisting of all the previously recorded loops.
Frontman Craig Fitzgerald says, “by ‘hacking’ Facebook Live we really tried to push our live performance to a different type of level. Everything had to be timed perfectly. From the musical loops to the choreography. ” We noticed a delay in Facebook live from the moment you go live, to the moment it actually shows up on people’s walls. This inspired us and we thought it’d be cool to turn that lag into a video and audio sampler.”
The Academic’s rise in the past year and half has been staggering – in that time they’ve sold-out shows across Ireland, the UK and Europe, supported bands including The Strokes (at Hyde Park), Pixies and Noel Gallagher, racked up millions of Spotify plays – all independently and with just a 5-song EP to their name. Currently on a 25 date US tour, The Academic play their only Irish headline show of 2017 at Vicar Street on November 4thfollowed by a UK and European Tour supporting The Kooks. Their highly anticipated debut LP is out early next year.
