Today, Jaala reveals a new offering ‘Sames‘ from her forthcoming record Joonya Spirit out Friday 20th April via Bedroom Suck Recordings / Remote Control Records.
Lead singer and guitar Cosima describes the track which premiered on Triple R’s Breaking And Entering yesterday “It’s a song written from the perspective of Pikachu who, to quote HTMLflowers, wants to ‘go full Raichu’. Replace the word ‘sames’ with ‘caterpillar’ and you’re getting pretty close.”
Through your ears, deep in your mind, down in your heart, in a way you never knew you wanted, Jaalawill caress you and Jaala will entice you. Like the roots of a tree Jaala is ever growing, pruned only by themselves and never by the expectations of the public.
In 2015, Jaala released their debut album Hard Hold running out of the gate and to the top of most critics ‘Best Of’ lists including a nod for AMP Album Of The Year, feature record on triple j, Album Of The Week on RRR, FBi Radio, RTR and SYN FM and clocking rave reviews on Pitchfork, FADER and NPRabroad.
Since the release of Hard Hold they have transformed into a completely new animal, stylistically and literally. The addition of Carolyn Schofield (synth) of Fia Fiell fame has moved the band towards a more haunting, dreamy experimental pop movement as opposed to the guitar shredding melt your face prog rock vibes of yesteryear.
Vocalist/guitarist Cosima pay and drummer/genius Maria Moles stand firm with their intricately woven telepathy. The ornate and ever flowing creativity is still ubiquitous, only it feels different now, rather than falling down a beautiful waterfall into a pit of demons that become your mates it’s more like your feet have been confiscated at the same time as you’ve been given the ability to fly.
Keep your ears peeled for April 2018 when their new album Joonya Spirit is unleashed upon the world in all it’s untouchable glory.

Sydney’s dynamic production duo Set Mo (Stu Turner & Nick Drabble) today unveil their seductive new offering “Near”, featuring the unadulterated vocals of Hobart’s vibrant songstress Asta. Following their latest invigorator “Unity”, “Near” is the third track to be released in their prolific eleven-track output planned for 2018 – released monthly via Set Mo Records.
A return to form from the pair’s previous 90s club inspired “Unity”, “Near”
“The original piece of music, before there were any lyrics, we gave the working title of Near as the track had a warm, comforting feel to it. When we got in the studio with Asta we explored this concept and the broader idea of feeling someone’s presence and aura. This is when the song Near truly came to life. Asta has an amazing voice and we love the more laidback seductive feel in the verses contrasting with the lift in energy and power in the chorus,” explains Set Mo.
“Near” builds on the momentum set by last month’s “Unity” which was added to Sydney’s FBi Radio and Spotify’s Fresh Electronic playlist with over 1.6 million followers, alongside February’s adrenaline-inducing single “Nightmares” (

ANNOUNCE HI-VIZ NATIONAL TOUR FOR JUNE 2018
Australian electronic dance pioneers THE PRESETS are back with a vengeance, announcing today that their long awaited fourth studio album HI VIZ is set for release on May 18 through EMI Music Australia, and will be followed by a national tour across June, taking in Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Canberra, Wollongong, Sydney, Brisbane and the Gold Coast.
Their return was heralded in spectacular fashion late last year with the first taste of new music from HI VIZ – the urgent “Do What You Want”, which featured in triple j’s Hottest 100 songs of 2017 and the sweeping “14U+14ME”, which is among the tastemaker station’s most played songs of 2018. Most of the album has been mixed by John Hanes who created the classic mix of “Uptown Funk” as well as working more recently with the likes of Sia, Bruno Mars and Major Lazer. Apocalypso collaborator Scott Horscroft also mixed several HI VIZ tracks while Flume engineer Eric J mixed “Beethoven” – the pair’s sly nod to their Conservatorium years.
“We wanted to make something that was literally meant to get you out of your head”, explains Julian Hamilton. “All the songs on HI VIZ are outward looking so in that respect it’s much more like our earlier stuff. It’s about trying to capture that energy you get on a great night out with your friends when you get to leave everything else behind you for a while. We essentially tried to create the soundtrack to a party that we would want to go nuts at.”
“It’s taken us ages to make this album because we just kept writing and recording more and more songs”, reflects Kim Moyes. “At one point we had about 50 contenders and, like us, they were all over the map mood wise. Eventually we decided – fuck it – let’s just pick the most ‘up for it’ songs. Those tracks are always the most fun for us to play live anyway so we thought ‘why not have a whole album of them?’”.
Both Julian and Kim individually produce other artists outside their Presets collaborations, so it’s not surprising that they, once again, are credited as Producers for their own album. It’s also apt that some of the artists with whom they’ve worked should make HI VIZcameos. For example, “Are You Here?” features indie rockers the DMA’s, whose latest release was co-produced by Kim. Similarly Alison Wonderland – for whom The Presets recently created a widely played remix – guested on the beaty “Are You Out Of Your Mind?” while Jake Shears from Scissor Sisters added vocals to the dark’n’steamy “Tools Down”.
It’s been a decade since The Presets first set festival fields alight with breakthrough anthems like “My People”, “Talk Like That” and “This Boys In Love”. The pair had been making waves in Sydney’s clubs since forming in 2003 and signing to the influential Modular Records, but it was their 2008 Oz chart topper, Apocalypso, that first introduced them to wider audiences. That album was certified triple platinum and won them six ARIA Awards in their homeland. By contrast, 2012’s critically acclaimed Pacifica was comparatively introspective but epic gigs around the world – from Glastonbury Festival and Coachella to Splendour In The Grass – forged the duo’s reputation as Australian electronic music trailblazers.

“Hannah’s voice is a little Stevie Nicks-ie and the jangly guitars sound like they’re lifted from an interstitial scene in Singles, but you know sometimes you hear a song and you just like it.”

“Heartfelt, clever ruminations at the intersection of indie rock and alt-country”
– ROLLING STONE
“Led by the powerful vocals of Hannah Joy, the trio deal in infectious indie pop-rock.”

Aussie trio Middle Kids will release their debut album Lost Friends next month, and today they share new single “On My Knees”. The band explain the track is “about rejecting the value system of the individual as the prime unit of society. It’s also about how suffering and disappointment can help change our perspective in a healthy way. When we stop focusing on ‘winning’ and can submit to something bigger, or to each other, we are better people.” Listen HERE.
On Lost Friends, Hannah Joy, Harry Day and Tim Fitz bring back their knack for haunting hooks, lyrical poignancy and irresistible indie rock appeal that critics praised in their self-titled first EP, released in February 2017. This radiant collection of new songs conjures melodic nostalgia for some of songwriting’s very best, rich in heartfelt build and beautiful simplicity.
Middle Kids made a powerful debut last year with the release of their internationally acclaimed self-titled EP, featuring singles “Edge of Town” and “Your Love”. The band dazzled at several SXSW and The Great Escape showcases, made their U.S. television debut on Conan and supported legendary acts like Ryan Adams and The War On Drugs.
The new album, Lost Friends, is the kind of album that sucker-punches you in the gut, revealing its nuances only after repeated listens. The songs’ edges are jagged, the production clean, stray imperfections imbue warmth and a human touch. Middle Kids craft classic hooks and riffs that tangle up in your brain like licorice and choruses that linger long after the song has faded. And they’ve bonded over a greater sense of what their music should accomplish.
Lost Friends will be released on May 4th through EMI Music Australia and is available now to pre-order HERE on limited lilac coloured gatefold vinyl, gatefold CD, and digital download.
