NU-JAZZ GROUP KYOSHI RELEASE NEW SINGLE MOTHER OUT NOW PRAISING THE DEVINE FEMININITY IN ALL OF US

by the partae March 26, 2021
written by the partae

KYOSHI is a Sydney four-piece band who converse in rhythm and melody. They’ve synthesised their own distinctive voice, with a futuristic and progressive interpretation on the psychedelic offerings of 60’s soul, funk and jazz – that soulfully stimulates both the mind and body.

Teasing the inevitable debut album, Kyoshi’s first release for 2021, Mother is a spiritual honouring to the feminine power in us, and in the universe that surrounds us. The great Earth Mother has unbound generosity for her children, as she watches over them grow and develop.

Opening with ethereal chimes to tickle your ears, Mother quickly jumps into a swampy groove that’ll resonate with your internal rhythms. Leah’s poetic lyrics have a swift momentum that leads the funk-laden chorus. Throughout the song the harmony builds to a beautiful crescendo where the repeating phrase “She brings forth new life” perfectly captures the raw power of the great Earth Mother.

Grounding their sound in nu-jazz and future-soul, Kyoshi’s music is complex but never overwhelming. The bands previous releases, Lush and Naima received strong support from triple j, FBI Radio, 4ZZZ, 2SER, and KCC Live (England).

What is your name and role within Kyoshi Mother? My name is Leah Wilkie, I front the band playing keys and singing, and I do quite a lot of the song writing as well. Where are you currently based? I live in Newtown, the boys all live in and around Newtown and Marrickville too so we’re more or less based in Sydney’s Inner west - a great hub for local artists. What's been happening recently and how has your Covid experience been so far? Well, Covid for me personally was amazing. I loved being able to slow down, and to do a lot of self-work and self-reflection. We don’t get a lot of opportunity to do that in our society, we really have to make time for ourselves if we want it. I felt that collectively too, everybody really needed to realise the importance of slowing down and learning to sit with ourselves. On the other side of that, I am also excited that things are opening up again for everybody - although I do hope that everyone can find a bit more of a balance coming out of their experience in 2020. Your new single 'Mother' is out today, what influenced the sound and song writing? Collective feminine energy was the big inspiration for Mother! I really felt energised by a lot of the amazing women in my life, and inspired by some of the leading female artists in the scene too like; Allysha Joy, Moonchild and Nai Palm. I really wanted to honour the creativity, and the divinity that lies within us and is all around, through nature, connectivity and love. How did you go about writing Mother? Well, I was sitting at the piano, I had the bass line and the vocal melody in my head already, and then I settled on some chords. The lyrics really just flowed straight out of me at the time - something that does not happen often in the writing process for me. It was something that I just really needed to express - It was also a reminder to myself to honour my own creativity and divine femininity too. To always show myself more love! Where and when did you record/produce/master and who with? We did most of the recording at Coda Audio and at Yianni’s house (our guitarist and synth player) over 2019 with our recording engineer Felix Abrahams. Felix also mixed our record, we did that at his place, and Madalyn Henly from Viking Lounge Studio is our mastering engineer. How did you approach the recording process? We went in a little blind, it being our first record and all. We definitely learnt a lot coming out of the experience, we know what we would do again and what we would totally change next time round. But we had a lot of fun recording and adding parts in, we really took our time with everything too. We preferred to sit on ideas and flesh things out as they came rather than rushing. You're playing 8th April at Waywards - Newtown, what do you have in store for this gig? Yes! We are so so excited for this show, I am bursting to play live again. The show is going to be huge, we’ll be playing some tunes off our upcoming record, there will be ethereal soundscapes and improvised interludes and jams (amongst other things) - we always love throwing in some improv and just vibe off each other. You have a debut album pencilled in for around August 2021, can you give us a hint of what to expect? The love child of a caramel slice and a sticky date pudding, but for your ears. Who are you listening to at the moment? I’ve been loving Edu Lobo’s album Cantiga De Longe, some delicious Brazilian music, Yussef Dayes' and Tom Misch’s latest creation What Kinda Music, Zeitgeist Freedom Energy Exchange - some crazy creators from Melbourne, and Epoch by Alfa Mist. What do you like to do away from music? I love to read actually, always got a couple of books on the go. I practice yoga often, I run small groups for friends too - honestly it keeps me sane! I’ve just started running women’s circles too - something I am extremely excited about continuing. Cooking is also a very cathartic practice for me. I’m also a music teacher, so I pour lots of my energy into that. I absolutely adore the crazy cycle of knowledge, and sharing something that I’m so passionate about with others is just so incredibly rewarding. What's planned for 2021? For me, 2021 is all about honouring my own needs, and really becoming the person I want to be, surrounding myself with beautiful humans, and creating my own opportunities. I’m also really excited to see how Kyoshi’s path unfolds this year, really focus on expanding our flavour but mostly just really enjoying one another and enjoying the journey. https://www.triplejunearthed.com/artist/kyoshi https://www.facebook.com/kyoshiband/ https://www.instagram.com/kyoshi_band/

BABE RAINBOW ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM 'CHANGING COLOURS' - NEW SINGLE FT. JADEN SMITH OUT NOW!

BABE RAINBOW ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM ‘CHANGING COLOURS’ – NEW SINGLE FT. JADEN SMITH OUT NOW!

by the partae March 25, 2021
written by the partae

From high in the hills of Byron Bay, BABE RAINBOW have been catching the favour of like-minded souls with their music across three albums now. The latest person to feel their music in the wind is activist, actor and musician Jaden Smith.

Crushing at first on their song ‘Us And The Rainbow’ from the band’s 2019 album ‘Today’, Jaden connected with the band through Instagram and now in what might be the most unexpected collaboration for the year, Jaden lends his particular genius to Babe Rainbow’s new single ‘Your Imagination’. A beautiful daydream, a thoughtful lullaby, a meditation drawn from the very nature of the band. Listen HERE.

The dreamy new single comes with a euphoric video that sees Babe Rainbow and Jaden running the viewer through their alternate world,  spreading a sense of freedom, enriched by nature’s canvas. Watch the video HERE.

‘Your Imagination’ is lifted from the band’s forthcoming fourth studio album ‘Changing Colours’ announced today for release on 14th May, via the band’s own label Eureka Music through AWAL for digital, and Flightless Records for vinyl worldwide.

At the end of their last US tour, Babe Rainbow decamped to Topanga Canyon to start on a new body of work with famed producer Kyle Mullarky, who had been shaping similar sounds to theirs in the West Coast psyche scene for years through the likes of the Allah-Las, and Tomorrows Tulips.

Filled with inspiration and mountain air, the band returned to The Music Farm studio in Byron Bay to finish the record, teaming with producer Wayne Connelly to close out the production.

The resultant record, Changing Colours, is the fold in a mythical road map between California and Byron Bay; compressing time, like a needle skipping over the past half-century of music.

‘Your Imagination feat Jaden’ is out now digitally.

Details for pre-ordering the limited edition double A side 7″ by Flightless are here: https://flightlessrecords.com/collections/vinyl

Baker Boy Releases New Single ‘Ride’ feat. YirrBaker Boy Releases New Single ‘Ride’ feat. Yirrmal

by the partae March 25, 2021
written by the partae

Baker Boy today releases his new single ‘Ride’ – a track to help you forget your worries — even if just for a night. ‘Ride’ premiered this morning on triple j’s Breakfast with Bryce and Ebony.

The official video premiere for ‘Ride’ and a live Q&A with Baker Boy will kick off tonight at 7pm (AEDT) on Baker Boy’s YouTube channel from here.

Baker Boy’s small but beloved oeuvre thus far has always been about making listeners feel good, feel free and feel in tune with the rhythms of the world around us. But that’s never been so explicit as on his new single , a new collaboration with his cousin Yirrmal that demonstrates just how distinctive and evocative Baker Boy’s music has become since he debuted with the instant-classic ‘Cloud 9’ in 2017. Described by Baker Boy as “a new and improved version” of his 2017 Yirrmal collab ‘Marryuna’ (#17 in that year’s Hottest 100), ‘Ride’ is the beginning of a new chapter for the Arnhem Land’s fresh new prince, a marker of ascendance from rising star to supernova status.

Funky, soulful, and jaw-droppingly catchy, ‘Ride’ is a party track lost to the annals of time, like an Off The Wall single re-recorded in Yolngu Matha. It’s the brightest-burning party-starter in a catalogue made entirely of them.

Baker Boy says of ‘Ride’, “I wanted to make a song that could bring people together on the dance floor, no matter who they are or where they come from,” “I’m driven by the vision that I have of people coming together, visions of positivity and fun and telling stories that people can relate to. That’s the main message — just bringing people together, no matter what your background, or how you dance, let’s just get together and celebrate and I think that’s powerful. We need more of that.”

Written in a session with Yirrmal and longtime collaborator Dallas Woods and produced by Pip Norman, ‘Ride’’s ease and carefree groove reflects the tight-knit relationships of its collaborators. Yirrmal, who came up with the powerful and catchy chorus, says, “I’m glad I got to collaborate with Baker Boy again and put that good Yolngu soul into ‘Ride’. This song’s about friends having fun, having good times every weekend. I wrote ‘Ride’’s chorus about my mob back here and when they want to go out. We see negative stuff around here, a lot of fighting, but with ‘Ride’ it’s like come on, don’t be shy, come to the town and let’s dance. Let’s be part of the team, think about the positive things and not the negative things.”

‘Ride’ arrives alongside a typically exuberant music video, directed by Ryan Sauer who “after hearing the song for the first time and how fun and energetic it is, my vision was to utilise that vibe when creating the imagery in the music video.”

Featuring Baker Boy cruising down some of Melbourne’s most iconic streets and letting loose in a packed nightclub, “The video brings the same excitement that the track does, it’s all about the journey to the club and bringing people together. It was incredible collaborating with Aurie Indianna on the creative direction again, with Ryan, Harry and the crew really bringing the vision to life!,” says Baker Boy of the clip.

‘Ride’ is set to become the latest triumph for Baker Boy in a career full of them. Nominated for the 2021 APRA AMCOS Song of The Year for ‘Meditjin feat. JessB’, the song was performed live over the weekend for Sounds Australia’s SXSW CLOSE UP showcase and most recently won Baker Boy (aka Danzal Baker) 2nd place in the prestigious Vanda & Young Global Songwriting Competition. His list of accolades continue with six career ARIA nominations; an ARIA Gold certification for ‘Cool As Hell’; six wins at the National Indigenous Music Awards; an Order of Australia medal; the 2019 Young Australian of the Year award; multiple placements in Triple J’s Hottest 100 and over 37.4 million streams of his music world-wide.

Cian Ducrot is definitely one to watch”

Irish-born, London-based Cian Ducrot today shares another take of his tender, emotional pop music with his latest single ‘Crocodiles’ out via the Darkroom/Universal Records. Listen to it HERE.

As with his last single ‘I’m Not Usually Like This’, Ducrot manages to distill extremely personal experiences into universally resonate emotions without diluting his songwriting. Dropping out of the Royal Academy of Music, harnessing the power of tiktok, and breaking of his classically trained box allowed Ducrot to utilize his background in the rich instrumentation of classic music together with cathartic, alt-pop music, partly synonymous with this exciting, internet-raised new generation of pop musicians.

On the track, Ducrot shares, “Crocodiles is a song I wrote after I experienced my closest friends letting me down when I needed them the most. It was a hard realization that sometimes those you’d do anything for wouldn’t do the same for you and it hit me extremely hard.”

The release of ‘Crocodiles’ follows Cian’s first single ‘I’m Not Usually Like This’ under his new label home of Darkroom Records, alongside artists such as Oliver Malcolm, Max Leone, and Billie Ellish. Stay tuned for more from Cian Ducrot in 2021.

‘Crocodiles‘ is out now via the Darkroom / Universal, buy/stream it here.

BACHELOR (Jay Som’s Melina Duterte & Palehound’s Ellen Kempner) Announce debut album Doomin’ Sun Share new single & video ‘Stay In The Car’

Early praise for Bachelor:

“two slow-burn songwriters who sound like they compounded each other’s daring on their first single, ‘Anything at All’…the track continually builds and bristles, starting with a skulking bass line and peaking with an onslaught of frenetic guitars.” – The New York Times

“‘Anything At All’ an expertly designed piece of indie rock: a tasteful bass bump anchors the track, while guitars, synths, and pianos flicker anxiously during the verses before a big guitar hook that’s all carom and crunch, like a tidal wave on repeat.” – Rolling Stone

“A groovy ballad all about unrequited, queer love, the sound feels fresh and new for both artists”  –  Billboard Pride

“highlight the duality between restraint and release…Bachelor appears to be a push for both Kempner and Duterte into a more eerie, post-punk direction that doesn’t compromise on intimacy.”
– them.

“a sparkling mix of both artist’s distinctive sounds.” – NYLON

Palehound’s Ellen Kempner and Jay Som’s Melina Duterte recently announced their new collaborative project Bachelor and shared acclaimed first single ‘Anything At All’. Today, the duo announces their debut album — Doomin’ Sun due out May 28 on Milk! Records / Remote Control Records — alongside brand new ‘Stay in the Car’ track and music video directed & edited by Haoyan of America. On the bass-heavy rock song, the duo paint a yearning portrait of a woman in a supermarket parking lot, a barely-contained desire oozing out of cotidian descriptions like: “She burns out of the market/ Plastic bags digging into wrists/ Blood stuck in her fingertips.”

Kempner explains, “I wrote the lyrics to ‘Stay In the Car’ back in December of 2019 when I was in Florida for my partner’s top surgery. I had run out one afternoon, post op, while he was healing to grab lunch for us and as I was gathering my stuff in the parking lot, a big car pulled up and this absolutely beautiful woman got out. She was dressed all in red, dripping with jewelry and had the most wild fiery mane I’d ever seen. She was yelling at the man behind the wheel asking him what he wanted from the store and I wished I was that man. I wanted to be a part of her life, her best friend, her driver, whatever she wanted me to be. I was completely mesmerized.”

Duterte continues, “We wanted this song to be a visceral listening experience, inspired by The Pixies and The Breeders. For the music video, we worked on a two-day shoot with Haoyan of America in Poughkeepsie in extremely cold weather. We all collaborated on the idea that our friendship should be portrayed in a fun and stylish way. Haoyan captured that energy in his own unique and creative lens through his collection of 80s/90s/00s props and toys, CGI, and anything car-themed.”

Kempner and Duterte hybridized their individual songwriting talents, producing a collection that slips between moods with ease and showcases their lyrical prowess. While the album features collaborations with the likes of Big Thief’s Buck Meek and James Krivchenia, as well as Duterte’s partner and Routine-counterpart Annie Truscott of Chastity Belt, the record was largely made by the two musicians in isolation as a fitting precursor to the forthcoming year. Creating the space to explore significant themes from queerness to climate change, the collection also finds Bachelor experiencing pure, unadulterated joy: the kind of joy that can only come from creating, laughing,  and having a ridiculous amount of fun with a close friend.

Written and recorded in Topanga, CA over the course of two weeks in January of 2020, pre-pandemic, Doomin’ Sun is a record steeped in friendship.

THE BRONX RETURN WITH BRONX VI ON AUG 27 VIA COOKING VINYL Early preview comes via ‘White Shadow’ single

by the partae March 25, 2021
written by the partae

The Bronx, the Los Angeles’ “rabid, feisty… and unrelenting” (Consequence of Sound) rock band whose sequential discography has seen the group through a nearly two-decade career, release the Joe Baressi-produced album Bronx VI on Aug 27 via Cooking Vinyl.

“I’m excited,” says guitar player Joby Ford. “From day one we really decided that we wanted to make a record that went in different directions and places. The thing I like a lot about it is that everybody contributed songs. It’s not just Joby J. Ford guitars with Matt singing over it. I loved listening to what other people wrote, and I think those differences and nuances really come through.”

“We’ve known each other for a long time,” adds singer Matt Caughthran, “and we’re such good friends and we’re so tight creatively, but we’re still learning stuff about each other, especially when it comes to the process of creating an album. Brad and Ken are just coming out as songwriters and we’re learning to write songs as a group around ideas they bring to the table. This is a really important record for us growth-wise because it kicked down a lot of doors that needed to be kicked down. I feel like now going forward the sky is the limit.”

An early taste of the 11-song album comes via the single White Shadow, a track Matt describes as “a song about spiraling. Wild eyed Guitars, drums, and bass mixed with a high speed chase and a frantic mind unraveling. CLASSIC F*CKING BRONX.”

Bronx VI was produced by Joe Baressi (Tool, Melvins, Bad Religion) at his House of Compression studio in Pasadena, Calif. Baressi is someone the band had wanted to work with for many years. “We’d been talking about doing a record together since 2005,” explains Joby, “and it finally aligned schedule wise.” Matt adds, “He was just the perfect guy for this record. We went in feeling really good about all the songs, and we just needed someone to make them sound fucking badass and take it to the next level. That was definitely Joe.”

Album pre-orders (including the highly collectable 7″ box set pictured above) are available now with the collection available digitally, on CD and with a number of vinyl variants including an orange and blue galaxy Australian webstore exclusive.

Each of the 11 songs on Bronx VI will be available as individual, limited-edition 7-inch singles featuring unique artwork from a hand-picked group of artists including Estevan Oriol, DABS MYLA, Craig Stecyk, and Tim Armstrong. The 7-inches, while available individually, can also be purchased as a monthly subscription, dubbed the “Mirror Press” series and limited to 400 fans, the lucky recipients will receive a collectible, handmade wooden box embossed with the band’s logo, a lyrical decoder mirror, 7-inch slip mat and featuring room for each of the sought after singles. The artist for “White Shadow” is Philadelphia-based graphic artist Jeremy Dean.

ABOUT THE BRONX

The Bronx formed in 2002, releasing their self-titled debut album the following year. Over the Los Angeles-based band’s 19 year career, The Bronx have released five original albums under their original namesake, and three albums under their alter ego, Mariachi El Bronx. Both iterations of the now legendary SoCal outfit have been hailed for harnessing the “unleashed cries of youthful blue-collar anguish” (Los Angeles Times), and for writing “hard-hitting and catchy hard rock tracks” (Loudwire). The Bronx is Matt Caughthran (vocals), Joby J. Ford (guitar), Ken Horne (guitar), Brad Magers (bass) and Joey Castillo (drums).

Recorded during the sessions of their last album Shadow Offering, the new tracks were premiered by the band last night during their WWWorld Premiere live concert on their YouTube channel. Watch it here. The band shares their inspiration behind the songs: 'Slayer Moon' is inspired by a Sailor Moon phone case I bought in Tokyo, at 3 am while on tour in Japan. Growing up I was obsessed with Sailor Moon, particularly with the ability to magically transform from a normal girl into a full-on mystical and powerful Sailor Scout, battle-ready to combat the evil forces of the world. Sailor Scouts have the longest legs ever drawn - so long that I drew a parallel between their immaculate legs, and our frenetic modern minds, lost in the ego abyss of the infinite scroll.” “‘2020’ was written sometime in 2017, after a long period of being alone – in an abstract sense of the word – while reaching for fleeting physical closeness. I was with friends, but my heart was lonely and longing for companionship, my body confused with the unfamiliarity of new and shallow encounters. I had been meditating a lot during this time “tracing a line through the centre of my body” – a process of inward-looking that I veer towards when I take the time to sit. I titled the song ‘2020’, in 2020. Revisiting the song's lyrics through the eyes of our present reality struck a chord with me. I felt as close to the song as when I had first written it. I find that I am asking myself similar questions while in this pandemic, without my friends, my family, my familiar structures.” Listen to Slayer Moon / 2020 by clicking here. VIOLENT SOHO TO PLAY FIRST HEADLINE SHOW SINCE THE RELEASE OF THEIR ARIA #1 FIFTH STUDIO ALBUM EVERYTHING IS A-OK

written by the partae
Violent Soho fans rejoice! Today we are absolutely psyched to announce that the band will be playing their first headline show since the release of their massive ARIA #1 fifth studio album Everything Is A-OK on Saturday May 1st.

In a little over a month, Violent Soho will take to Brisbane’s iconic Riverstage to play songs from the critically acclaimed, 4 x ARIA nominated album to a live audience for the very first time.

With support from Tired Lion and Seathru, this show will be one for the record books. Riverstage holds a special place in the hearts of both Violent Soho and their fans, with the band playing to a massive sold-out crowd of almost 10,000 animated fans when they headlined at the venue in 2018. Their return to that stage off the back of a year we won’t speak of, is set to be one hell of a party.

Released in 2020, Everything Is A-OK marked the band’s second ARIA #1 after their last release WACO (which scored 2 x ARIA Awards, the 2017 AIR Award for Best Hard Rock, Metal or Punk album and is certified ARIA Gold) topped the national chart in 2016.

The tremendous win was a testament to both Violent Soho’s undeniable talent and the Australian indie-music community, that the band have been an active part of and helped foster for the past 16 years. Support for the band flooded the nation’s screens, radio airwaves, streaming services, and digital and print media, with Everything Is A-OK scoring the Feature Album on triple j and coming in as the #1 New Release on both Spotify and Apple Music.

A revered live act and standing as one of Australia’s biggest bands, Violent Soho are a favourite of music fans everywhere, playing to huge crowds at Falls Festival, Big Day Out, Groovin’ The Moo, Splendour in the Grass and triple j’s ‘One Night Stand’ as well as numerous sold-out headline tours. The band have maintained a breakneck pace on the live front across their career, including stand out performances at Laneway Festival, Party in the Paddock, Mountain Sounds, Splendour in the Grass and their own album tour supported by good friends DZ Deathrays and Dune Rats. This culminated in the biggest shows of the band’s career supported by previous touring mates The Bronx and winning two ARIA Awards (Best Group & Best Rock) as well as performing at the 2016 ARIA Awards ceremony.

Australians are hungry for more live music, and Violent Soho are ready to deliver a year’s worth of Soho energy in one night, at one of Brisbane’s most iconic venues. With a limited capacity due to current restrictions, tickets are expected to move fast. Fans are encouraged to get in quick to avoid missing out!

SAPPHO RELEASES STUNNING DEBUT SINGLE 'FLEX' + JOINS THE IVY LEAGUE RECORDS ROSTER

SAPPHO RELEASES STUNNING DEBUT SINGLE ‘FLEX’ + JOINS THE IVY LEAGUE RECORDS ROSTER

by the partae March 24, 2021
written by the partae

Ivy League Records is incredibly excited to release ‘Flex’ – the irresistible new single & video from the label’s newest signing, Sappho!

The moniker Sappho is of great significance to Phoebe Baker (the iconic voice of Alpine). When she was born, her parents were torn between naming her Phoebe or Sappho, they opted for the former and so it makes complete sense that Baker’s first solo endeavor bear the name that could have been.

Sappho was born in early 2018, when Baker found herself exploring ideas and, for the first time, writing music without any real intention.

With no limitations or boundaries, Baker threw herself into exploring her pop influences. ‘Flex’ came early and set the tone, from there, the music began to flow. After a few months of writing, Baker realised these songs were turning into more than just a fun creative outlet, they had become something empowering, with a voice that showcased to the world her sound – the Sappho sound – a sound where lush pop meets something quirky, a little bit cheeky, a lot sexy and ultimately, something irresistibly fun.

Sappho’s music is vibrant and bold, experimental without being inaccessible. On her debut release ‘Flex’ Sappho is assured and mischievous as she urges the listener to find their inner power and ‘flex’ against a pulsating groove that is impossible not to dance to.

“Flex is about realising you have innate strength and that you can nourish and support that within yourself. You can fight for yourself, fight to love yourself, and by singing it you can let others know that they too can find that strength and resolve. This song is an unabashed mantra, an invocation of inner strength and a celebration of following your heart.  Writing flex was a cathartic pop moment in my life. I felt like I was uncovering all my childhood pop dreams at the same time as releasing a sentiment of power I had never really allowed myself to say. I felt as though I was summoning my own strength, and the strength of love in those around me. This song is a happy place.” – Sappho

Marrying future pop with a healthy dose of Vogue era Madonna and 90s new jack swing thrown in for good measure, ‘Flex’ plants Sappho’s flag firmly on the Australian musical landscape, claiming her space as one of the country’s most exciting new artists.

Australian R&B artist Jasmine Khan drops second single 'CLOSE'

Australian R&B artist Jasmine Khan drops second single ‘CLOSE’

by the partae March 24, 2021
written by the partae

Making a R&B song can be hard and making it a great R&B song can be even more difficult. But Jasmine Khan does it effortlessly.

‘CLOSE’ is Jasmine Khan’s second single and it’s her best song yet. Passionate, a little bit sultry, and engrossing, ‘CLOSE’ is an exciting addition to Khan’s fast-growing discography.

Jasmine Khan’s vocals are soft but powerful, dancing effortlessly over the rich production. ‘CLOSE’ integrates elements of trap production within an R&B focus, making the composure diverse but still steady.

The track is relatable, exploring the depths of heartbreak, and love, whilst navigating life and the complications that can arise. The track is warm and inviting, creating a vibe of togetherness that many listeners can attest to.

“I’ve been working late, on that day-to-day grind,” sings Jasmine Khan.

Signed by Venture Artists, the R&B artist is shaping up to become an Australian music icon. Sitting alongside other talented members of Venture Artists like KEIYNAN LONSDALE, H3RIZON and SHYJANA, we are excited to see JASMINE KHAN’s growth this year as she tackles new adventures within the musical landscape.

From Sydney, Australia, Jasmine Khan was a finalist on The Voice, and Winner of the Colours TV Singing Competition, where Khan represented Australia in Mumbai. Among many other achievements, Jasmine Khan is at her best when she can use her real-life experiences to create sonic masterpieces.

THE EMPTY THREATS DROP NEW MUSIC VIDEO ‘U’ SOLD OUT HOMETOWN LAUNCH AT ADELAIDE’S JIVE THIS WEEKEND

PRAISE FOR THE EMPTY THREATS

“Their music is adjacent to the psych-laden indie of Tame Impala and King Gizz, packaged in a unique way that feels distinctly that of [their own] — almost as if they’ve taken some of the genre’s best bits, jammed it with their own sounds, and made this polished new direction.” — PILERATS

“I feel the spirit of Jim Morrison through this. I’m sure The Lizard King would approve.”
— Gemma Pike, Double J

“You may know The Empty Threats as that band with “some cheeky clarinet and a larger-than-life frontman but…The Empty Threats show us that there’s a lot more to the band than pure psychedelia.” – This Is Radelaide

See what others are saying…

Adelaide’s captivating neo-psych rock group The Empty Threats have just dropped the official music video for their latest single ‘U‘, which they released last week via South Australia’s newest indie-label PAK Music. Watch the video HERE.

‘U’ is the first of two single releases ahead of their forthcoming self-titled EP, which is set for release in late September. It was written and recorded alongside guitarist/producer Matt Schultz (also of Tiles) throughout 2020’s COVID-fuelled South Australian lockdowns — which served as the EP’s main creative inspiration. The greatly anticipated follow-up up to 2019’s ‘Ablutions’ touches on the “interpersonal dilemmas and struggling personal relationships that [the band were dealing with] throughout the year“.

Official Music Video for ‘U’ by Conor Mercury.
Praised by South Australian icons West Thebarton as one of their favourite Adelaide-based acts, ‘Empties’ have quickly become known amongst the Adelaide music community for consistently putting on an electrifying live performance. In the past 18 months alone, they’ve shared the stage with some of Australia’s best psych-rock groups including Methyl Ethyl, A Swayze & The Ghosts, The Babe Rainbow and The Vanns.

The Empty Threats are celebrating the launch of ‘U’ to a sold-out crowd in this Saturday night at Adelaide’s JIVE (which recently crowdfunded over $70,000 to keep it’s doors open). Empties will be supported by post-punk rockers Coldwave + dreamy songstress Keeskea.

ABOUT THE MUSIC VIDEO

The music video for ‘U’ was produced by filmmaker Conor Mercury (DRUID FLUIDS and Ricky Albeck & The Belair Line Band), along the wide-open shores of Sellicks Beach on South Australia’s picturesque Fleurieu Peninsula. Enigmatic front man Stuart Patterson (also of Placement and Dead Roo) spent most of his childhood here. He explains:

“This location represents a safe space in my mind, one where I can always reconnect with myself without worrying about societal pressures. It was the perfect filming location for this song, which is all about the journey of self-reflection feeling suppressed and alone in an ever-changing society.”

Touching on the video’s creative direction, Stu explains that the latter half of the video – featuring the sudden appearance of a sea monster [as played by contemporary dancer Andrew Barnes] – is a visual representation of finding an emotional outlet and “the human need for social connection and…how vital communication through physical means, such as holding hands or dancing, is for us all.”

Added to Apple Music playlists ‘Heaps Heavy’, ‘Fresh Blood’ and ‘The Riff’

Video added to rotation on ABC’s Rage

Following on from their critically acclaimed single ‘Born of a Lie’, Brisbane-based post-hardcore quartet Deadlights have revealed another emphatic offering in new single ‘The King of Nowhere’ – mixed and mastered by Chris Vernon (Belle Haven, Windwaker, Stuck Out).

The song begins with authoritative drums and sneering guitars before launching into a cathartic assault of purgative riffs and the convincing vocals of Dylan Davidson. ‘The King of Nowhere’ shows off the band’s dynamic capabilities, as the track builds and swells with tremendous precision, delivering anthemic melodies and exasperating breakdowns, leading into its imperious finale.

Davidson talks about the meaning behind ‘The King of Nowhere’:

“‘Nowhere’ is the wasteland of the unwatered mind. It is the dark place we barricade ourselves in when we want to hide from reality. ‘The King Of Nowhere’ is a song about putting yourself in this place and getting lost with no way out.”

In the live arena, the four-piece have cemented themselves as a household name within the Australian alternative scene, touring nationally with Polaris, Alpha Wolf, Thy Art Is Murder and Thornhill, and supporting heavy luminaries Parkway Drive, Every Time I Die, and The Devil Wears Prada (USA).

‘The King of Nowhere’ is the second single from the band’s forthcoming sophomore record ‘The Uncanny Valley’. Lead single ‘Born of a Lie’ was widely embraced by Australian radio stations triple j, triple j Unearthed, The Faction, SYN FM, JOY FM, 3RRR, and PBS FM. The track also received online praise from heavy tastemakers Hysteria Magazine, HEAVY Mag, Wall of Sound, New Noise Magazine (USA), Kill Your Stereo and Depth Magazine. The accompanying video clip was added to rotation on ABC’s Rage.

‘The King of Nowhere’ is available worldwide now, through Greyscale Records

Alex Runo – ‘Devil’ Premiere

by the partae March 23, 2021
written by the partae

Raised on a mixture of soul, gospel, rock and blues, Alex Runo has since added to his repertoire a set of flavors developed from working with the likes of Måns Zelmerlöw, Carola, Jill Johnson and Tingsek.

After touring for almost twenty years as a background singer, bass player and guitarist all over the world with many renowned artists (Shirley Clamp, Uno Svenningsson, Robin Stjernberg, Lisa Miskovsky), as well as writing and producing music for several established acts (Super Junior, TVXQ, Cho Yong-pil), it was high time to release something of his own.

Together with longtime colleague and funk/soul producer Jay Birch, Alex creates music with notes from all their combined influences, from Ray Charles via Sly Stone to Nine Inch Nails and Peter Gabriel.  The music may be rooted in soul, but having made a career as a chameleon singer and multi-instrumentalist, you can hear a variety of influences in the compositions.

The element of surprise is essential, but most of all, this is music that is meant to make you feel something.

Runo’s debut single “Underdog” introduced his unique pop style with a deep, dark production combined with a funky groove.

His sophomore single “Preaching To The Choir” further explores his fascination with the blues and even country music. This, in his own words, is “a song about how being wrong, and changing the way you look at things, isn’t always the same as being weak, but rather a way to grow as a person.”
