Chart-topping artist Joji’s highly-anticipated new album SMITHEREENS is out today via longtime label 88rising, following his recent nomination in the 2022 ARIA Awards ‘Song Of The Year’ for ‘Glimpse Of Us‘. LISTEN TO SMITHEREENS HERE.

SMITHEREENS arrives ahead of Joji‘s upcoming local appearances at Laneway Festival, touring across Brisbane, Sydney, Adelaide, Melbourne and Perth this February alongside Haim, Phoebe Bridgers, Fred Again.. and more. All tickets are on sale now and AVAILABLE HERE.

SMITHEREENS is Joji’s first full-length release since Nectar in 2020, which marked his debut ARIA #1 Album, 88rising‘s first artist to land a #1 Album in Australia and the most streamed album on Spotify globally on the week of release.

With today’s new release, he delivers his characteristically melancholic yet powerful vocals on tracks like ‘Die For You‘, a sober, morning-after remembrance of a former love. The track is accompanied by a visual directed by the creative studio Actual Objects compiled entirely from stock footage.

SIDE A of the album heralds a mature sonic direction for Joji through wistful and contemplative ballads accompanied by lush production that blooms within each song. SIDE B, largely produced by Joji himself, digs deeper into the lo-fi and off-kilter sounds that hark back to his experimental beginnings as an artist.

Since its release in June, the album’s debut single, ‘Glimpse of Us’, reached the #9 spot on Mediabase’s Top 40 chart as his first-ever top 40 radio record. The song received an RIAA platinum certification in the US, Australia and Canada with over 784 million global streams to date and is Joji’s highest-ever Billboard Top 100, peaking at #8. It also made significant debuts on Billboard’s Top Streaming Songs and Global 200 charts and remained in the Top 3 on the Spotify Global and U.S. charts for over a month.

‘Glimpse of Us‘ is nominated in the 2022 ARIA Awards ‘Song of the Year’ category and its Dan Streit-directed video won ‘Best Editing’ at the UK Music Video Awards. ‘YUKON (INTERLUDE)‘, the following single off the record, saw similar success and praise for its psychedelic and mind-bending music video directed by the visionary duo and longtime collaborators BRTHR (pinkpantheress, Lana Del Rey, The Weekend).

Kaskade Surprises with Underground Hard Dance Single Release “Dance With Me” In Collaboration with Dutch Talent Justus

by the partae November 5, 2022
written by the partae

Artists: Kaskade, Justus
Title: Dance With Me
Label: Arkade

Download / Stream

Kaskade is back to flex his underground style with his track “Dance With Me,” a collaboration with Dutch up-and-comer Justus. “Dance With Me” features minimal but heart-pounding bass and dynamic, hollow synths spiced with a catchy vocal hook, all in all, making for a record that’s simply meant for playing in dark warehouses and clubs. As a longtime veteran and icon in electronic music, Kaskade continuously evolves his sound and explores previously untrodden paths, proving again and again that he’s staying on top.

As a household name in electronic music for nearly two decades, Kaskade needs no introduction. His list of achievements is a mile long: 12 studio albums, 7 GRAMMY nominations, the first solo electronic dance artist to sell out both Navy Pier in Chicago and the Staples Center in Los Angeles, the first DJ to ever secure a Las Vegas residency, and the first electronic artist to headline Coachella. Having worked on collaborations with, e.g., Alicia Keys, Jennifer Lopez, Gwen Stefani, and Meghan Trainor, he has the unique talent of creating his signature sound in any genre. Additionally, he has been one of the electronic artists leading the charge into the gaming world and, to date, is the only musician to conceptualize and create an entire season of music for video game giant Rocket League. In 2021, Kaskade came out of quarantine swinging as the first-ever solo headlining musician to sell out and perform for a public event at LA‘s SoFi Stadium. Most recently, in 2022, he teamed up with deadmau5 to form Kx5. Kaskade‘s influence on dance music has shaped the culture for generations of listeners, continuing to wow longtime and new fans alike with every new release.

At just 22, rising Dutch star Justus looks set to have the world at his feet. The talented music producer and DJ has been touted by the likes of Tiësto, David Guetta, MORTEN, Afrojack, DVBBS, W&W, Steve Aoki, and many more. With his productions winning him rave support from titanic names like Tiësto, David Guetta, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Afrojack, Nicky Romero, and more, it came as no surprise to fans and industry tastemakers alike when Spinnin’ Records confirmed their exclusive deal with Justus. The signing was yet another stamp of confirmation, one more indication that Justus is on a clear trajectory to the top. As his sound starts to naturally mature and develop, Justus is absolutely hitting his stride as a producer and a performer, diving into a new vein of rhythm and groove that sits somewhere in the space between Tiësto-style Trance and Amelie Lens‘s brand of Techno. With much, much more in the pipeline for 2022, it surely is an exciting time for fans of this talented Dutch youngster.

Nicky Romero and Afrojack Collaborate For The First Time On Party-Ready House Single “Back To Where We Started”

by the partae November 5, 2022
written by the partae

Artists: Nicky Romero, Afrojack
Title: Back To Where We Started
Label: Protocol Recordings

Download / Stream

Two Dutch electronic music powerhouses join forces in the form of Nicky Romero and Afrojack‘s new track “Back To Where We Started.” The release seamlessly fuses both Romero‘s and Afrojack‘s styles, making for a banger of a track with elements of big room and progressive house. “Back To Where We Started” opens with energetic beats reminiscent of EDM‘s heyday in the aughts, and it becomes clear that veteran fans and new ones alike will be served a dose of nostalgia. It climbs into a breakdown that builds up heavy anticipation before a hard-hitting drop that’s simply meant for the festival or club scene. This is the very first time that Nicky Romero and Afrojack have collaborated after a long history of remixing each other’s works, such as Romero‘s remixes of Afrojack‘s “One More Day” and “Hero,” and Afrojack‘s interpretations of Nicky‘s “Okay” and “Rise.” This time, “Back To Where We Started” was created for the opening of their “Two Is One” b2b set during ADE‘s Amsterdam Music Festival, and both have played the record in several sets already around the world. We’re hoping that this will be one of many collaborations between these two.

“After many years of friendship and remix work back and forth on each other’s imprints, it was time to finally level up in the form of our first official collaboration ever. Super happy we found a way to blend both styles into one hybrid club tune.” – Nicky Romero

“Nicky and I have been friends and worked together for many years, and we had a great time finally making our first official collaboration and performing it together during our back-to-back set at AMF this year!” – Afrojack

Nicky Romero

After taking the world by storm with early hits such as “Legacy” with Krewella and the #1 single “I Could Be The One” with Avicii, Nicky Romero quickly proved that his talent is ever-evolving and here to stay. After launching his Protocol Recordings imprint in 2012, the renowned performer, producer, and label head continued his personal successes with a string of high-profile releases, ranging from collaborations with Armin van Buuren, David Guetta, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, W&W, Timmy Trumpet and Steve Aoki to remixes for the likes of Robin Schulz, Kygo, Rita Ora, Steve Aoki, Martin Garrix, Jess Glynne and more. While showcasing his label’s roster via his weekly Protocol Radio show, Nicky Romero continues to innovate and evolve, and with his annual “Nicky Romero & Friends” ADE showcase and the launch of Monocule alter-ego, he keeps proving his ability to turn into gold everything he touches.

Afrojack

As one of the most innovative and sought-after artists, GRAMMY Award-winning producer and electronic dance music icon Afrojack continues to shatter boundaries that push music in bold new directions. Since making his breakthrough with the multi-platinum-selling single ‘Take Over Control‘, the Dutch-born musician has lent his production skills to tracks that bend genres and laid the foundation for major hits for artists such as Beyoncé, Pitbull, Will.i.am, and more. In the last few years, Afrojack was named one of the 50 Most Important People in EDM by Rolling Stone and placed on the Forbes ’30 Under 30′ music list. In 2010, he was one of the first DJs to secure a Las Vegas residency and continues to entertain global audiences as a headlining resident artist for the Hakkasan group. In 2010, he won his first GRAMMY award for Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical for his remix of David Guetta & Madonna‘s song ‘Revolver.’ In 2011, he nabbed two more GRAMMY Nominations for Best Rap Song for his part in Chris Brown‘s “Look At Me Now” and for Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical for his remix of Leona Lewis & Avicii‘s ‘Collide‘. Afrojack travels the world performing at the biggest clubs/festivals while producing new music with his label Wall Recordings. In 2020, his song “All Night” (feat. Ally Brooke) reached number 1 on the US dance radio chart through amassing an impressive 40+ million streams to date. His most recent worldwide hits, such as “Anywhere With You” with Lucas & Steve and DubVision and “Up All Night” with Hard Lights and VINAI, add to an impressive repertoire spanning over a decade as a global performer and multi-platinum selling artist. In 2021, Afrojack received his fourth GRAMMY nomination, this time for Best Dance/Electronic Recording for his inspiring dance-pop crossover Summer song “Hero” with David Guetta.

Title: Ain’t Got No Worries
Label: Warner Music

French superstar duo Ofenbach teamed up with multi-platinum R3HAB to create a feel-good, dance-pop record – “Ain’t Got No Worries.” Sitting sonically on the crossover of the two genres, the new release showcases both Ofenbach‘s melodic sound and R3HAB‘s dynamic and lively production style. Opening with harmonious melodies and accompanying dreamy vocals, the track then gets a dose of a deep and organic bassline. Ofenbach and R3HAB build up the energy into a groovy drop that’s perfect for the premise of having a good time even if things are going wrong in a part of your life. “Ain’t Got No Worries” follows Ofenbach‘s previous hits from 2022 including “4U,” “Let Me Know,” and on R3HAB‘s side – “One Last Time” with VIZE, “Weekend On A Tuesday” with Laidback Luke and “Worlds On Fire” with Afrojack, and more.

Ofenbach

Ofenbach is today the most streamed French duo/band in the world. With 2 Diamond, 22 Platinum, and 21 Gold certifications, they’re still young and at the beginning of what is going to be a long and successful career, with already more than 2,5B streams and 500k followers on Youtube. They’ve already performed more than 250 shows with 3 European tours, 2 US tours, and 1 Asian tour. In 2022, after a +50 dates summer tour, their collaborations like “Ain’t Got No Worries” are indicative of their dynamic style and willingness to break genre boundaries.

R3HAB

Multi-Platinum DJ and producer Fadil El Ghoul, better known as R3HAB, has been trailblazing his way through dance music for the past fifteen years. From his breakthrough remixes for Rihanna, Drake, Taylor Swift, Calvin Harris, to anthems such as Platinum-certified “All Around The World (La La La)” and “Lullaby,” to his collaborations with the likes of Ava Max, ZAYN, Luis Fonsi, Sean Paul, and more, R3HAB has proven to be one of the most forward-thinking artists in the game. His work has collected over 8B streams to date, including 1.1B in 2021 alone. R3HAB founded his label CYB3RPVNK in 2016, which has passed 4B streams across platforms since its inception. He is Spotify’s Most Discovered Artist, one of Spotify’s top 200 most streamed artists, ranked #13 on prestigious DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJs chart, and has earned over 70 Gold and Platinum certificates. On top of that, he performed at the world’s top festivals, such as EDC, Ultra Music Festival, Tomorrowland, Balaton Sound, Coachella, Summer Sonic Festival, DWP Jakarta. With his combination of innate artistry and innovative attitude, R3HAB has earned his place as a household name in dance music.

Dylan Pinkerton Unveils New Electro-Pop Dance Ballad ‘One That You Love’

by the partae November 4, 2022

Previous Support For Dylan Pinkerton

“(Dylan) brings forward life experience, relatable lyrics and very catchy tunes”
(David Totton, Casey Radio 97.7FM)
[About ‘Thrill of the Fall’]

“(his song) reminded me that life’s good, and we will get through the constant feeling of unease”
(Founder of Moorambilla Voices)
[About ‘So Strong’ Remix]

Stream ‘One That You Love’

Songwriter, storyteller and producer Dylan Pinkerton is shooting Cupid’s arrow straight to the dancefloor with his new electro-pop love song ‘One That You Love’.

The Naarm/Melbourne-based artist has played all over the US and Australia in various projects since 2012, including huge festivals on home turf Bluesfest and Splendour in the Grass. Pinkerton has an impressive trophy cabinet – being named winner of the Alex Legg Memorial Foundation Scholarship in 2020 and the Moorambilla Voices Remix Competition, placing as a Finalist at the Dolphin Music Awards for Best Male Vocalist, as well as being offered scholarships to study abroad in North Carolina.

Following his 2020 single ‘Thrill Of The Fall’ and ‘Ready Or Not’ collab with Matt Marcii comes the joy-filled and heartfelt ‘One That You Love’.

The track confidently combines high-impact, polished production with shiny moments of textured electro-magic. It’s easy to see that ‘One That You Love’ will become a song that is exactly as its title implies. This eletro-pop dance ballad’s magnetism is in the chemistry between Pinkerton’s vocal mastery, a dynamic beat and that bursting, singalong chorus.

Revealing what inspired the track, Pinkerton says:

“‘One That You Love’ is about seeing through someone and realising they are more than flesh and blood, that they have a beauty that extends beyond our physical world. It’s the existential question of, are we more than these bodies, and are our souls intertwined into something so divine that even the gods would sing songs of our love.”

The multi-talented musician has always put his heart into his work, as demonstrated by his dedication to writing the recent single ‘I’m In Love’ for his partner which was then premiered on her favourite podcast, Life Uncut (the #3 most listened to podcast in Australia). Pinkerton’s music has also received attention from ZZZ FM, Casey Radio 97.7FM, Bay FM, ABC Far North Coast, Radio Eastern FM, Joy 94.9FM to name a few.

We can expect to hear a lot more from Dylan Pinkerton, starting with the release of the beautiful new track ‘One That You Love’ on Nov 4.

“Always On My Mind” hit No. 5 in the AMRAP metro charts – March, 2022

Stream ‘Waiting For The Sun‘

Meanjin/Brisbane dream-rock project Lucid Safari have another hot hit up their sleeve with ‘Waiting For The Sun’, which will be let loose on November 3.

Winners of The Sound Garden’s ‘Battle of the Bands’ in late 2020, Lucid Safari went on to perform at Wynnum Fringe Festival the very next month, and have since played at iconic local venues The Zoo and The Triffid, and alongside the highly regarded Kate Miller-Heidke and Ian Moss.  Their most recent track ‘Till The End’ comes hot on the heels of the group’s debut EP ‘Delirium’, released earlier this year in February.

This new song is an energetic blend of the band’s psych, surf, reggae and rock influences – Lucid Safari once again brings Daniel Lewis’ sonic vision to life with a band of rotating accomplished musicians.

‘Waiting For The Sun’ is the perfect coastal-rock summer anthem. Infectious percussion and washed-out synth waves, a blistering guitar solo and echoed refrains of ‘whoa’s’ – it’s all here, and it’s so fun. Buckets of feel-good groove and catchy vocals hook their way in and will get listeners lured into a dream state of ‘feet on the ground, head in the clouds’.

Frontman Daniel Lewis elaborates:

“As well as welcoming back the sunny season, the song reflects the feeling of living through the ebbs and flows of life knowing that when times are tough, good things are sure to come back around.”

And there’s plenty more good things ahead for the group, if their track record is anything to go by. ‘Liquid Dreams’ premiered on Double J’s Stir It Up with Sarah Howells, while ‘Lady’ was added to high rotation on US station KXFM, and the band has stirred interest from Livewire, Scenestr, The Point Music News, plus many more media outlets and community radio stations. Boasting a sold-out headline show at Black Bear Lodge, a single launch at Felons Barrel Hall, and plenty of upcoming shows including the Wynnum Fringe Festival and supporting Australian X-Factor winner Reece Mastin – Lucid Safari are gaining popularity everywhere they go.

Thankfully, we don’t have to wait much longer – Lucid Safari release ‘Waiting For The Sun’ on November 3. Be sure to head to the single launch at Woolly Mammoth on November 12, they’ll be putting on a show with co-headliners The Urban Sea and special guest Sam Syrah – details below!

Grace Sanders Releases Sophomore EP, The Introspective & Alluring ‘Nothing Is Personal’

by the partae November 4, 2022
written by the partae

Previous Support for Grace Sanders

“I’ve listened about 5 times in a row and can’t get enough of this one. It waltzes and cruises in this way that just encircles you and all of a sudden you’re marching along to her commands.”
4 / 5 (Declan Byrne, Triple J) [About ‘Attachment Theory’]

“Never thought I’d hear neo-soul and glitchy electronica combine so smoothly until approximately 4 minutes and 39 seconds ago.”
(Abby Butler, Triple J) [About ‘Anymore’]

“Still feeling the after effects of Grace Sanders’ latest – pulse elevated and nerves on edge, this is pacey and alive”
4 / 5 (Dave Ruby Howe, Triple J) [About ‘Anymore’]

“Her vision for writing top shelf synth pop tracks is showcased at the highest level this time around. It’s honestly some of her best work to date.”
(AAA Backstage) [About ‘Anymore’ & ‘Nothing’]

‘Calling My Mother’ – 5th Most Played Track on RTR FM in 2021

“It’s a great mix of addictive basslines, sultry synths and vocals that leave you wanting more. Grace grabs your attention from the very first second and doesn’t let go.”

(Sound Doctrine) [About ‘Dissipate’]

“It’s a charming four-minutes that centres on this genre-mixing pop sound that’s full of bubbly confidence and Grace Sanders’ signature charm”
(Pilerats) [About ‘Green’]

Stream ‘Nothing Is Personal’

Boorloo/Perth electronic-pop act Grace Sanders returns with the sophomore EP follow up to ‘GUMS’, titled ‘Nothing Is Personal’, out on November 4. Co-produced and co-written with Ezekiel Padmanabham, this body of work sees the talented duo experimenting with their sound, moving further into the art-pop space.

This EP is an enthralling, introspective dive into how we love, showcasing a darker side to Sanders’ work while still championing her RnB/ indie-pop talents. Navigating grief, loss, and self-acceptance through the process of a breakup, the ironically named ‘Nothing Is Personal’ reflects its intimate themes both lyrically and musically.

Several gritty interlude tracks are the glue that hold this experimental record together –  featuring audio recordings from Sanders’ ex after six months of no contact. Sanders explains this creative choice, and the wider-reaching emotional journey:

“I wanted to give a voice to this person to demonstrate how, while I may have this interpretation, nothing that happens to you is ever really about you – and so to give voice to that other party I thought provided interesting contrast and solidified my point in the title… we are all ultimately a tapestry of our experiences and the people we love, and the pain and connection we share together.”

Cinematic ‘(opening)’ sets the scene for a fantastical night garden adventure – shadowy, symphonic, and full of sparkling details that tease your ear. Melodic poem ‘a year and one day’ is sparse to open, before erupting with guitar and theatrical instrumentation to mimic the push/pull of craving intimacy with an avoidant partner.

Next up, ‘video game’ jitters and jolts electronically in a disorienting depiction of anxiety, while ‘anymore’ steers the chaos to the dancefloor, with Sanders’ signature soulful, velvety voice taking hold of the darkly addictive synthy-bop beat. Dropping back to a slow RnB jam, ‘nothing’ steadies the ride with reverb-filled lo-fi sensibility.

The most recently released single from the EP, ‘attachment theory’, boasts a sentimental soundscape soaring with purpose toward a beautifully textured breakdown, melting into layered harmonies and unbridled brilliance.

A pretty, lo-fi reprieve that is an ode to b-sides and outtakes on old records, final track ‘*210 days’ marks a change in the journey toward self-acceptance.

Support for Grace Sanders’ work continues to grow with each release, already having won over the likes of Triple J, Double J, Triple J Unearthed, NME, Tone Deaf, The Music, Cool Accidents, AU Review, Acid Stag, Pilerats, Spotify Playlists, and played support for Great Gable, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, Grievous Bodily Calm, Dulcie, Adrian Dzvuke, Ghost Care and Tanaya Harper.

The musically unpredictable, but reliably wonderful Grace Sanders will debut the amazing new EP ‘Nothing Is Personal’ on November 4.

Clay Western

written by the partae

Where are you currently based?

I’m currently living in North Bondi.

How did you first start playing music?

I first started off playing trombone in primary school. When I was about 15 I was at a bit of a crossroads with music. I started to go to a few gigs and was really inspired to write songs. I became good friends with the Caravana Sun crew and they gave me some cool opportunities to play gigs with them while I was still at school. The rest is history, I guess.

What’s been happening recently?

2022 has been a bit all over the place for me. I moved from Fremantle to Byron Bay in June, and then I just moved to Sydney a month ago. I felt there was more opportunity for me down here, so I pulled the trigger.

I have been writing a heap through all the chaos and meeting a heap of new people. I’m pretty keen to settle into the big city life for a while and see where it takes me.

Your single ‘Nothing Lasts’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

I wrote ‘Nothing Lasts’ in the studio with Jordi and Josh, a couple of weeks before I moved from WA to Byron Bay. At the time, I was staring down the barrel of leaving all my friends, family and the life I had created at home in WA. The song talks about moving on from a relationship, and even though it’s not the easy decision, you know it’s the right decision for both of you.

Lyrically, the track is pretty melancholy, so we tried to give it a bit more of a lighter, driving feel in the production. I think the polarity between the lyrics and production find a happy medium that complement each other.

How did you approach the songwriting process?

I had a bunch of different demos and ideas when I went into the studio with Jordi and Josh. We had recorded a song the day before and were looking to record a new song. The ideas I had weren’t really working, so we decided to just start again and write something from scratch. We wrote most of the song in one morning and just finished it as we were recording it.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with?

I recorded ‘Nothing Lasts’ with Jordi Davieson and Josh Biondillo (San Cisco) in their home studio in Fremantle. We then recorded the drums with Dan Carrol at Rada Studios then got my good mate Dylan Olivierre (The Money War) to mix it.

Please tell us about the production process:

Josh and Jordi have some amazing vintage gear in their studio. I wrote the chord progression on Josh’s Fender Rhodes and we built the song around that. and used a Yamaha DX-7 for most of the synth/bass parts. This is probably the least guitars I’ve used on a track and it feels refreshing to take my music down a different direction. We built most of the track at their home studio then recorded drums at Rada Studios with Dan Carrol. I love looking back and seeing how many different hands one song passes through. The production of a track is a journey in itself, and I’m so lucky to have the opportunity to work alongside some amazing people.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

I’m listening to a heap of Whitney at the moment. I think there’s definitely hints of them in ‘Nothing Lasts’. I’ve also been listening to Marcus Mumford’s new album, The Strokes and Tyler, The Creator. My musical taste is a bit all over the place haha.

What do you like to do away from music?

Surfing is my main passion outside of music. It has always been a big part of my life and allows me to escape from all the chaos and keeps me sane. I find it hard to sit still. Being active is really good for my mental health. If I don’t make time to get in the ocean or do something physical I definitely feel it. Music and surfing are my meditation. They allow me to leave all my troubles at the door and let me brain reset.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2022 going into 2023?

I’m really excited to be creating heaps of music with new people. I’d like to do an east coast tour early next year and maybe even tie in a couple of shows back home as well. I’m still finding my feet in Sydney and trying to navigate life in a new city, which is pretty exciting. New people, new songs, anything is really possible.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

WA really punches above in terms of food and bars. For coffee, Ooh Coffee in North Fremantle without a doubt. For bars, Percy Flints is the favourite. One of the best beer gardens I’ve been to, food is pretty good as well. You can pretty much guarantee you’ll see your friends there on any given day of the week. I’m still finding my bearings over in Sydney. I really love The Royal in Bondi. It’s a bit grungy, the food is great and they have some sick bands playing. I saw The Beefs play there the other week, and Isabella Manfredi as well. There’s definitely a cool little scene there.

‘Nothing Lasts’ is out now.

Watermelon Boy, Ritchie Loop & Mark Dwyer – Break That Board

by the partae November 4, 2022
written by the partae

Waking from the meditation, your eyes open. A big breath in, a big breath out. You hold your hand high above your head and *CRACK* it slices through the timber. Watermelon Boy returns with another tropical club classic. This time teaming up Kingston’s Richie Loop and Jamaican-American Mark Dwyer for the martial arts motiffed Break That Board.

A percussive, twerky rhythm peppered with 90’s fighting game sound FX. Richie Loop’s distinctive vocals are familiar from his collaborations with Hardwell, Timmy Trumpet, Henry Fong, Steve Aoki, Vybz Kartel & Sean Paul. He adds a ripe dancehall flavour to the tune and enacts chorus with the proficiency of a 5th dan black belt. Emerging rapper Mark Dwyer burst into the second verse with a 12 hit combo that shuffles like Ali’s footwork. Combining his passions of tropical sounds, martial arts and vintage gaming, Break That Board is Watermelon Boy’s most personal work yet. A track to motivate, inspire & elate. Break That Board is out Today! (4th of November 2022).

Von Sharp – Save Me (feat. Erin Ezekiel)

by the partae November 4, 2022
written by the partae

Von Sharp is the creative project from Queenslander Stu Galligan, a gentleman who at 40 decided that more than anything, he wanted to make music. After a couple of decades building a more conventional career, the artistic impulse reached fever pitch and Von Sharp was born. A lover of classic dance music, the Von Sharp sound has clear elements of early trance and euro-dance. Speaking about the genesis of this project Galligan says “My first song Day Dreamer was a complete secret kept from my friends and family. It was a mammoth effort and a long way from perfect but a huge learning experience and big box ticked.  When working on the follow up track Stu enlisted a pair of collaborators to lift the track to the next level. “ Erin and her husband Paul, who is a Producer, are from the US and are now living in Spain.

These guys are career musicians and are living in a beautiful part of the world, playing live music at some really stunning venues. When I first heard Erin’s voice I immediately knew where it would fit and that point in time was the beginning of Save Me. ”  Stu had already written the words to Save Me “When I wrote the lyrics I was thinking of a good friend and his long time partner who had just broken up but it also applies to my own situation.  The pressure that money, in-laws and you and your partners own expectation can place on a relationship throughout the course of life is sometimes too much for some couples.  In this instance, it’s happily ever after.

Using his existing lyrics, Erin created a topline that fit perfectly with Stu’s track. “Erin’s vocal sound is first class and she had a hand in creating the top line melody.  I really hope to see Erin perform the song to a live audience, she’s a true professional and a very experienced live performer.”

Save Me (feat. Erin Ezekiel) explores the notion of not being prepared to let true love wither. Romantic at heart and energetic by design Save Me (feat. Erin Ezekiel) has nostalgia at its core. Memories of first loves, bygone summers and distant raves flashback like dancefloor strobe-lights. Triumphant and sweet, Save Me (feat. Erin Ezekiel) is a case of passion coming first. Out Today!

Matt Corby, the multi-award winning songwriter and producer, today shares his latest offering through ‘Problems‘, debuting a newly canvassed creative canon. LISTEN HERE.

On the day Matt Corby was meant to start recording his new album, he and his family were instead rescued by a neighbour. Their home had been engulfed by the flood waters that raged through Queensland and NSW in early 2022. After nervously watching his heavily pregnant partner and young son be whisked away in a small inflatable dinghy, he got to work ferrying provisions to stranded locals and digging rotting mud out from beneath his home.

Within a week of these life-altering events, Matt returned to the studio and ‘Problems‘ was made. An instrumentally rich release that affirms his studio powers to complement his esteemed range as a vocalist. Trickling further into his longstanding RNB influences, hazy vocals, wiggly bass, skiffling drums and warbling keys are each given moments to softly pull into focus, before gliding back into the mix to demonstrate his mastery of space.

Complete with captivating live riffage and smart studio trickery at just the right times, ‘Problems‘ footnotes as varied a pool of sonic terrain as Moodymann to Kevin Parker, D’Angelo and Yussef Dayes. More so reflective of Matt’s own scrupulous production prowess and carefully refined craft that reflects his comprehensive study of studio pioneers.

Highlighting the release’s lyrical observations on human behaviours, Matt explains, “It’s about how funny humans are creating our own problems and issues that we then have to solve. Or creating problems so difficult we then can’t solve,” he says. “And how people talk so much shit and don’t do anything – how we’re setting ourselves up for failure. People want to point the finger but nobody wants to carry anything themselves.”

Recorded at his Rainbow Valley Studios with Chris Collins (Gang of Youths, Middle Kids, Skegss), ‘Problems‘ is Matt Corby’s first taste of new music since his 2020 stand-alone singles, ‘If I Never Say A Word‘ and ‘Vitamin‘, after his J Award-winning Rainbow Valley LP in 2019. In the time since, Matt announced the launch of his own independent record label, in between loaning his production expertise to work by Genesis Owusu, Jack River, Great Gable, Bud Rokesky and most recently, Budjerah. Stay tuned as Matt continues to refocus his creative vision onto his own work in the new year.

‘Problems‘ is out now via Island / Universal,

NOFX TOURING AUSTRALIA THIS DECEMBER AS PART OF GOOD THINGS FESTIVAL

FAT Wreck Chords and iconic West Coast punks NOFX are excited to present “Punk Rock Cliché,” the second single to be lifted from the Friday, December 2 release of the band’s brand new record, Double Album. Produced by Bill Stevenson (Descendents) and Jason Livermore (Blasting Room), Double Album brims with unbridled creativity, cheeky lyrics, and easily stands as one of NOFX’s best albums to date.

LISTEN TO “PUNK ROCK CLICHE”

PRE-ORDER DOUBLE ALBUM

What better way to celebrate an album release than a tour. NOFX will be in Australia as part of Good Things Festival kicking off on December 2 this year (album release day). Full details below.

At this point in your career, why do a double album?

“I wish I knew,” the fat one offers, almost confounded why anyone would ever ask him that question in the first place. “OK. I mean, we have a lot of records. I’m not sure how many, let’s call it 15 with 10 more EPs and 65 7″s. I wanted to do a double album cuz there are no good ones out there. Pink Floyd’s The Wall is about it. Quadrophenia is OK, I guess, if you’re a Who fan. Definitely not [The Beatles’] White Album. I don’t think anybody else has made good double albums. Certainly not Husker Du, Minutemen, or Smashing Pumpkins.

“I really like Single Album a lot, but the songs on Double Album aren’t quite up to scratch. All these songs were recorded at the same time, except this one was finished two years later. I think it’s a very enjoyable album, and maybe our funniest. I think it is what a lot of our fans will want to hear and it’s a great side three and four for a double album. I accomplished my goal of making a solid double-album, but it just took a lot longer than I expected.”

Reuniting with punk-rock legends Bill Stevenson and Jason Livermore for producer/engineering duties, it’s not hyperbolic to say NOFX are making their best music now. But that’s not to imply everything else they’ve done was crap, either. But Double Album reminds both ardent fans and casual listeners that NOFX weren’t born to follow trends. Indeed NOFX—Fat Mike, guitarists Eric Melvin and El Hefe, and drummer “Smelly” Eric Sandin—have carved their logo into the veneer of punk-rock culture for decades. With nearly 40 years in this circus, you’ll meet people and do/see/conspire to get all the wildest shit done. Remember how one of the stipulations of the NOFX book Hepatitis Bathtub was that none of the band members could see what the other ones were writing about them? Well, this time, Mike got permission to blow up the foibles and peccadillos of people in song for maximum velocity and hilarity.

There’s “Joanna Constant Teen,” a 78-second tribute to the dominatrix that spent six weeks in Mike’s NYC-based Airbnb during the production run of his musical, Home Street Home. (“She just moved in and played with me every night. She’d be like, ‘Mike; it’s time to write another song. Get started, or you know what will happen!’ That was really cool. Obviously, I didn’t write that much.”) “Alcopollack” is about booking agent David Pollock, who has worked with the band for over 30 years and has lost more than his fair share of clients for his too-brazen honesty. (“I asked him if it was OK if we put this on the album, and he’s like, ‘Yeah sure, it’s mean but funny.'”) “Fuck Day Six” is a story detailing the time Mike cleaned out (pun sorta intended) in a rehab run by Buddhists, with plenty of name (and deuce) dropping. (“Anybody who has gotten off of opiates knows what ‘day six’ means.”) “Is It Too Soon If Time Is Relative” is a hilarious ‘n’ cruel takedown of the acclaimed author/physicist Stephen Hawking. (“I wrote that before he died,” is Mike’s mea culpa. “It’s not quite as funny anymore. I wanted him to hear it.”)

Naturally, Mike has made a career drilling and riveting the word “self” into “self-deprecation,” and he’s sure as hell not going to stop now. With such future classics as “Darby Crashing Your Party?,” “Punk Rock Cliche,” the song that got dropped off the Blink album California after the band found out that Skiba co-wrote it with Fatty (Although it was their favourite song). Mike also admits that the Blink version of the song was better), and the too-real, too-bittersweet, too-funny tracks “My Favorite Enemy” and “Don’t Count On Me,” he’s still ready to take a cream pie to the face, even if it has broken glass and sharpened nails in it.

“You have to laugh at everything,” Mike reveals, “because the world is just falling apart and you have to have a good attitude not to take things seriously. So this is how I’ve always done it. I make people laugh every day. I usually do it in a self-deprecating way, it’s just how I go through life: I have as much fun as I can. That’s what life is—trying to find all the happiness you can. And spreading happiness. Which is what I feel like is supposed to be my job in life—spreading joy.” The determination to continue making compelling music, keeping the bar high for punk, and doing the best thing for their punk-rock legacy, makes NOFX simply unstoppable. Double Album is filled with moods, tales, and tempos slightly faster than an ice-road trucker backsliding down a hill. What’s their secret? Quite simply, NOFX isn’t half-assing anything.

Mike laughs. “I full-ass everything. Literally.”
