Epizode Festival ups its game again this year with the news that it has formed a creative and technical partnership with Sila Sveta, an interactive media, production and conceptual design company, for the production on the Main Stage. Says Natasha Rogal, CEO of Epizode festival, "It’s the first time in 4 years we make a step forward and deliver a brand new concept on the Main Stage of the festival. It’s become possible thanks to a cooperation with one of the most talented and professional teams in the industry. I am beyond excited because this will bring a new element of creativity and change the entire experience for our festival goers on the Main Stage!" Sila Sveta, a stellar interactive media studio, has collaborated with SETUP, an outstanding lighting design studio, to re-invent the central arena with simple linear structures empowered by bold light and video content to create a massive installation. In the very centre of the ensemble will be an intricate experimental object that explores the volume and geometry of a cube. Sila Sveta are the first call for every outrageous, unthinkable and unknown possibility in the field of digitally immersive experiences. They create content and provide the management necessary to install and produce any kind of show. Their studio has a unique working pipeline making it possible to deliver its exquisite product with unusually fast turnaround. There are several strong design teams in the studio, each lead by an exceptional art director. This flexible combination makes it possible to work on projects in completely different fields such as 3D mapping on buildings, holographic performances and lighting shows, all at the same time. About EPIZODE: EPIZODE is a music and art festival held at Vietnam’s most picturesque island getaway, Phu Quoc. The 11-day long festival kicks off after Christmas and ploughs through the hustle and bustle of the New Year. Over the last three editions, the festival has successfully featured some of the biggest electronic music headliners including the likes of Carl Cox, Ricardo Villalobos, Loco Dice, [a:rpia:r], alongside some of the most prolific talents in Asia. In 2019, attendance rates doubled from previous years, with more than 10,000 people from 79 countries. In only three years, EPIZODE is already recognized as one of the most iconic electronic music festivals in Asia. It is also touted as one of the best NYE music getaways that gathers ravers, industry folks and avid travelers in a dreamy environment equipped with an unparalleled music selection, combined with next level production and in artistic setting. This year's event will take place on a larger site with chill-out and daily activities zones, a food-court and market place. A significant effort is also put into the creation of a comfortable leisure area with yoga and sports, group meditation classes and healing sound sessions that will bring the mind and the body to balance. The art-program remains a priority with more new installations and a full list of the artists and key projects to be announced soon. Add in a world class team who bring exceptional sound systems, lights and next level ideas in the field of stage and light design and you have a wonderfully high class and immersive experience in paradise. Vujaday in Barbados announces Bob Moses, Sasha, Lee Burridge, Moodymann + more for lineup

by the partae December 29, 2018
written by the partae

Following their successful debut earlier this year in Barbados, Vujaday Music Festival has returned to announce a stacked phase one lineup in preparation for their second year. The 2019 edition will take place from April 3-7 and will once again take place in different venues all across the stunning Caribbean island. This will give festival-goers the chance to take in a new experience and venue each day.

The phase one lineup for Vujaday 2019 features legendary Welsh DJ and producer Sasha, a DJ set from iconic Canadian electronic duo Bob Moses, Detroit house and techno staple Moodymann, All Day I Dream founder Lee Burridge, a live performance from the Detroit based sibling duo Octave One, Vivrant label founder and renowned Swedish musician Jeremy Olander, Brooklyn house duo Bedouin, Life and Death founder DJ Tennis, Berlin house aficionado YokoO, members of the fan-favorite Desert Hearts collective Mikey Lion and Lee Reynolds, American production duo and Crew Love members Soul Clap, Women on Wax founder DJ Minx, Sheik ‘N’ Beik founder Rechulski, respected Toronto resident Nitin, and fellow Toronto native and current Barcelona resident Jade.

Many more names will be added to the lineup in the near future. Vujaday will also be announcing what venues they will be taking over shortly, and have also announced they will be hosting a new daytime party series for the first time this year. Details regarding this exciting new addition to the already jam-packed Vujaday experience will be announced as the festival nears closer.

Venue highlights from last year included Bellevue Plantation, a 100-acre property built in 1735 that included a pool, polo fields, and lush gardens surrounding the property. Another favorite was Cornwall House, which allowed those in attendance to witness a breathtaking sunrise while overlooking the gorgeous Eastern Coast of Barbados. Other venues were located directly on the beach and gave those in attendance the chance to sink their feet in the sand throughout the event.

With its dedication to providing attendees with an experience they’ve never seen or felt before, Vujaday pulls all the stops to create an unforgettable journey for attendees. The event spans over the course of five days, allowing festival-goers to be fully immersed into the culture of Barbados while traveling throughout the island to experience the unique venues that Vujaday takes place at.

Early bird tickets for 2019 are currently on sale and can be purchased here. Super early bird tickets have already sold out. More info about travel and additional details can be found on the Vujaday website, and you can watch their 2018 aftermovie to get a better taste of what the festival has to offer.

His compilation album on Defected Records, alongside his popular productions on labels like Green Velvet’s Cajual Records, Seth Troxler’s Visionquest label and more, has won him fans throughout the industry and general public alike.

Originally inspired by the 4/4 groove of Derrick Carter, he has now developed and toured his own brand of bassline-driven house across the world, demand for his sound resulting in a 30-date tour across the UK and the USA two years ago.

To date Sonny Fodera has achieved a lot in his illustrious career: A Beatport number one; a BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix; three studio albums; EP’s on Cajual Records, Repopulate Mars, Suara and, of course, Defected. The Adelaide-native has a strong case to stake his claim as one of Australia’s biggest and most successful house music exports.

As today’s fledgeling house revival attains new heights so does the difficulty in standing out amid its thriving pool of talents, however, Sonny Fodera continues to scale the mounting hierarchy whilst making it look easy. Named by Mixmag as one of their ‘Hot Six’, Sonny Fodera has had an impeccable 2013 with releases on a slew of today’s biggest house labels including a debut album, Moving Forward, on the reputable Cajual Records. Renowned for his smooth technical mixing, last year saw Fodera play at some of the world’s greatest clubs such as Air, Ministry of Sound, DC10, Booom! as well as a residency at Ushuaia Tower.

Sonny’s journey as a producer begun at the tender age of 16 when he was making Hip Hop, but it was not until the likes of Derrick Carter, Inland Knights and James Curd visited his homeland that his passion for four-four took firm shape. Fast forward in time and the budding 27 year old has stood shoulder to shoulder with his inspirational heroes of whom now all credit him for his dexterity both behind the decks and in the studio with Fodera receiving praise from some of the genres most established veterans, from Cajmere to Derrick Carter all the way to the ‘Godfather of House’ Frankie Knuckles.

Such recognition from the industry greats is a testament to Fodera’s knowledge and talents. Proving he is anything but a neophyte, the producer’s sub-genre ranging productions attest to his immense understanding of the genre with his tracks being supported by some of today’s biggest DJs. Cajmere was so fond of Fodera’s abilities he began collaborating with him as well as offering him an album deal on his label Cajual Records.

“We just really vibe together and get along really well,” says Fodera on his relationship with the legendary house stalwart. “We understand each other’s jokes and he’s extremely easy to work with. He’s just an awesome guy and acts like a mentor to me and has helped me a lot. He’s very consistent and pushes you, which is good.”

According to Fodera, last year’s highlights were “playing with David Morales and Simon Dunmore at Defected’s party at Ushuaia Tower, DJing at DC10 in Ibiza, getting signed to Defected and also releasing an album on Cajual Records”. These are all remarkable feats for any artist his age and require immense work ethic and passion, traits which Fodera has in spades. When asked about the biggest challenges a new producer faces Fodera states it is “getting signed to the right labels”, however looking back on his discography only proves this is a challenge he continues to pass with flying colours having had releases on the likes of Defected, DFTD, Cajual Records, Farris Wheel Recordings, Guesthouse, and of course his very own label Beatdown – all within the last year.

Now in the age of the popularisation of electronic music the young breakthrough producer is a reminder of a stronger than ever underground scene as he continues to showcase his true-house sound to every corner of the globe. Looking to continue last year’s momentum into 2014, the burgeoning artist has collaborations planned with some much respectedartists including further work with Cajmere and Gene Farris, another album on Cajual Records due in March as well as a touring calendar that will undoubtedly top the previous one. With no sign of resting on his laurels Sonny Fodera aims to persist with the fervour and integrity that has got him this far, forming a bright and promising future where he will undoubtedly be looked up to by future generations himself.

One of life’s certainties is the warm embrace of an old memory that reminds you of good times. What about that time when Nina Kraviz, Ben Klock and Bicep played at the Caulfield Racecourse? Those were good times. Or what about that time when Dixon, Mano Le Tough and Recondite went above and beyond to soundtrack one of the best days we’ve certainly had? Stop it, we want to go back…

In fact, we can’t let it go and we have to go back. So let’s do it – and this might be the last one ever so let’s make it one to remember.

This upcoming February novel will activate the Caulfield Racecourse once again for smalltown – and we’ve invited some of the best to oversee the day…

Axel Boman. George Fitzgerald. Tom Trago. Kate Miller. Rev Lon

Axel Boman (SWE)

We welcome back Axel Boman, the ringleader of Sweden’s eccentric house collective Studio Barnhus. It has been two years since this merrymaking master of music enthralled us at Pitch Music & Arts so expect him to come in hot. No one dabbles harder in sweet frivolities than this Swedish King of House. Expect Fun with a capital F.SoundCloud

George Fitzgerald (UK)

By day George Fitzgerald lives an unassuming life as a citizen of London, inhabiting production studios to make music on revered labels like Domino and Hotflush. By night he takes control of global clubs to spread his gospel of fluid house and shimmering techno. Don’t be fooled: His modest demeanour disguises the fact that his music is powerful enough to make you cut your hair, revert to his cult and convert to a way of living that seems more safe and comforting than the current rubbish being doled out by society’s political instability and social anxieties. SoundCloud

Tom Trago (NL)

We don’t understand why Tom Trago has not been officially elected the Mayor of Nightlife in Amsterdam. He is well versed in subverting you from life’s daily grind, and his sets should come with a guarantee that you will be present and in the moment: in fact, his DJ sets may or may not have been compared to possess the healing power of a 24-hour Buddhist meditation session. This Dekmantel favourite is entirely undeniable and utterly engaging. SoundCloud

Kate Miller (AUS)

A born and bred Melbournian, Kate Miller has been on a tear to become a beacon of originality, a shining light in a scene where mediocrity is unfortunately all too common. The Kate Miller playbook consists of tricky electro moves and exquisite techno rhythms that has seen her become a regular in the Berlin scene and clubs like Panorama Bar. Not one to play it safe, she can read a dance floor like a well trained academic.
 SoundCloud

Rev Lon (AUS)

In a city filled with talent, it can be difficult to stand out. But this is a trait that Rev Lon is displaying with minimal effort. She dabbles in techno and house with a touch of breaks, and are currently adding her own flavour to a sound that is in need of some reviving. Remember the name of Rev Lon.

THE MAMAS ANNOUNCE 2019 ‘JUICY’ TOUR

by the partae December 20, 2018
written by the partae

Do you find yourself craving any of the following?

– Milk
– Discipline
– Being asked if you’re warm enough
– Squashy hugs
– Being smacked in the head

You probably answered ‘yes’ to all the above, and we’ve got you sorted. The Mamas are an eight-piece soul, RnB and funky fem-hop outfit from Melbourne, led by four of the sassiest vocalists you’ll ever meet. Equal parts fabulous and fearsome, they’ve been disciplining and nurturing audiences around Melbourne for the past two years, becoming known for their sequin-studded shows and their knack for toeing the line between hard-hitting social commentary and outrageous comedy.

Following the release of their debut EP ‘Juicy’, The Mamas are poised to embark on their first ever interstate tour, beginning in their hometown of Melbourne before continuing on to Canberra, Sydney, Lismore, Byron Bay and Brisbane. If ‘Juicy’ is
anything to go by, you can expect alarming sensuality, disarming humour, timeless melodies, four part harmonies, and good, old-fashioned maternal wisdom.

“The Juicy Tour is one of the biggest, exciting things we’ve done as a self-managed, independent band, and we can’t wait! Tell your family, tell your friends and put the kettle on, because your mums and dads are COMING!”
Need some motherly advice? Need a good smack in the head? The Mamas will sort you out.

Catch them on tour in a city near you in January.

DANNY BONNICI & THANKYOU CITY
Festival NewsMusic News

Balance Music release The Golden Key, the latest project from artist Danny Bonnici in collaboration with Melbourne duo Thankyou City.

by the partae December 19, 2018
written by the partae

Danny Bonnici has been a key name in the Melbourne music scene for the past 14 years. Honing in on his ability to produce rich and emotive deep house with perfect execution, he has appeared on international record labels Global Underground, YK4, Vicious Vinyl and more.

His productions both collaborative and independent have earned him industry attention, gaining a Dance Music Award nomination and earning an Aria nomination with his 2003 track ‘Ride’ written collaboratively with Luke Chable. Working with modern electronic artists Kimbra and Bertie Blackman, his original work has even featured in sets by artists such as Sasha, John Digweed, and Herman Cattaneo.

Brothers Scott and Brent comprise the Melbourne based electronic duo that is Thankyou City. With over a decade of experience, the pair has been turning heads both with their mixing and their original productions, and have released works on Open Records and Sol Selectas record labels. This most recent release on Balance Records comes at the tail end of a year spent playing some of the most well-respected boutique techno festivals Australia has to offer, Chi Wah Wah Town, Babylon, and My Aeon.

Whether seeing them play a live set or listening to their latest compositions, Thankyou City has become synonymous with rich and well executed deep house music. This latest release from the pair sure to expand their career to new heights.

This debut collaboration from Danny Bonnici & Thankyou City is a beautifully constructed product of diverse musical backgrounds, and ultimately a symbol of the expansive creative talent within the city of Melbourne.

The first track of the EP ‘Golden Key’ fuses tribal-esque organic percussion, with a ground shaking sub and soft expanding pads. The track has enough experimental elements to it to make it feel like a breath of fresh air, whilst still maintaining the key elements found in all good tech-house music.

‘Awakenings’ harbours these same key elements but feels much more alive, a stabbing arpeggiated synth weaving listeners through a wide percussive soundscape, a string ensemble, and widely dispersed sound effects.

Featuring a remix from Danny Bonnici’s longtime friend Luke Chable, the final track of the EP completely reshapes the opening track ‘Golden Key’, still featuring those mesmerising softer elements, but refocusing the track on the driving beat and the cleanliness of the percussive breaks.

This body of work overall features so many rich emotive elements, their careful selection of synthesizer upon complex chord progressions matches up perfectly with the heavier side of the tracks within the bass and the drums. It’s a succinct summary of how capable these artists are at creating feel-good dance music of continually high quality, this is arguably their best work yet.

Tracklist

1. Danny Bonnici & Thankyou City – Golden Key (Original Mix)
2. Danny Bonnici & Thankyou City – Awakenings (Original Mix)
3. Danny Bonnici & Thankyou City – Golden Key (Luke Chable Remix)

by the partae December 19, 2018
written by the partae

Adored electronic producer Golden Features (Tom Stell) has today released two brand new remixes of his latest single Woodcut (ft. Rromarin). The two new collaborations, can be heard here, and come courtesy of American producer Machinedrum and rising Australian future pop duo Kult Kyss which Rromarin makes up one half of. The original track is lifted from Golden Features’ critically acclaimed debut record SECT which was released in July this year – LISTEN HERE.

The two latest remixes follow the recently released Golden Features remix of Odesza’s Falls, and also the joint colab which saw Golden Features team up with Odesza to remix Memories That You Call feat. Monsoonsiren. Both of which can be heard, HERE and HERE.

2018 has been a standout year for Stell. Shortly after the release his debut record, Golden Features brought to life the dark and dystopian world he had created on SECT to sold out shows at landmark venues including The Hordern Pavilion and The Forum in Melbourne on the SECT Australian tour. Having recently performed at Spilt Milk Festival, Golden Features will celebrate the New Year with performances at Lorne, Marion Bay, Byron Bay and Fremantle as part of this year’s Falls Festival – click here for ticket info.

VBX Amsterdam confirm first shows of 2019 – Ricardo Villalobos, RPR Soundsystem, Spokenn, Ingi Visions, Benny Rodrigues & more

by the partae December 19, 2018
written by the partae
Christmas comes early with the news that leading underground promoters VBX will be hosting two more of their famous parties in the first part of 2019. Taking place at their favourite venues in Amsterdam, Shelter with the likes of Ricardo Villalobos, RPR Soundsystem, Ferro, Reiss, Ingi Visions and many more all providing the intriguing soundtracks.

VBX are known for throwing unique, carefully conceived parties in Amsterdam’s most atmospheric and important venues. As well as making a big mark at ADE each year with their much loved offerings and afterparties, they also host plenty of cosy, intimate parties for smaller crowds who like to get down.

First up in the New Year is Ricardo Villalobos and Ferro on 25th of January at Shelter Amsterdam, the immersive basement space that has been the site of many great VBX parties over the years. Almost a year ago the “shaman of techno” – after nearly 5 years off absence from the Amsterdam club circuit – brought his A-game to Shelter Amsterdam and mesmerized everybody in attendance. Teasing records for minutes on end before unleashing them in all their glory, cutting between techno, house, breaks and throwing perfectly timed curveballs with a flair of effortlessness. He ended up playing several hours longer than originally planned because he enjoyed himself so much. What’s more, Ricardo is now a regular VBX guest who always brings his unpredictable and excellent a-game, and assured resident Ferro knows exactly how to work his crowd.

Next up is the cult favourite minimal masters that are RPR Soundsystem, who bring their intricate and intoxicating rhythms to Room 1 of Warehouse Elementenstraat on the 15th of February. This venue is another regular haunt for VBX and a historic Amsterdam space with industrial halls and large immersive rooms that come alive with the VBX production. Joining RPR will be VBX resident duo Spokenn (Ferro and Reiss) to ensure to get the VBX vibes right on track. As well as this there be a delightful Room 2 takeover from fellow Dutch promoters and label Slapfunk, who will bring their tasteful grooves courtesy of head honcho’s Ingi Visions (Samuel Deep & Julian Alexander), Benny Rodrigues and Gene On Earth.

In true VBX fashion there will of course be the infamous after parties in place for both shows…the details of those will be announced closer to the time, but as always you know the Dutch promoters will not disappoint.

A definitive and exciting start to the year from VBX, who continue to be one of Europe’s leading underground promoters.
