AFROJACK, TIMMY TRUMPET, MORTEN, SUB ZERO PROJECT and more lead debut Australian edition of global EDM festival DON’T LET DADDY KNOW.

by the partae October 11, 2023
written by the partae

From its birthplace in the electric Ibiza, DON’T LET DADDY KNOW has grown into one of the biggest dance music festivals globally, attracting some of the world’s most exciting names in EDM to its stages. And in Summer 2024, DLDK is bringing the action to Australia for the very first time, locked and loaded to take place across the East Coast in January.

Pre-sales commence Wednesday 11 October, before tickets go on sale to the general public at 12pm, Tuesday 17 October from Ticketek Australia.

The summer vibes will be at an all-time high this coming January, with DLDK’s arrival set to elevate Australia’s incredible festival season to new heights. The debut Australian run through Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane will be a gamechanger in Australia’s EDM scene – living up to the epic legacy of its international counterparts for a one-of-a-kind festival experience this summer.

The explosive artist bill will be led by one of the most innovative and sought-after artists, Grammy Award-winning producer and DJ, AFROJACK. Since making his breakthrough with the multi-platinum-selling single ‘Take Over Control’, the Dutch-born musician has lent his production skills to tracks that bend genres and lay the foundation for major hits for artists such as Beyoncé, Pitbull, Will.i.am and more.

Joining AFROJACK on the debut DLDK tour of Australia is evergreen festival favourite Timmy Trumpet who’s taken over international stages with his high-octane sets. An award-winning, multi-platinum selling recording artist, Timmy has forged his way to the very top, with a discography that exceeds 2.5 billion+ streams.

Danish DJ MORTEN has also joined the line-up – renowned for coining the ‘future rave’ genre with close friend and collaborator David Guetta. MORTEN has graced the stages of some of the most prolific festivals in the world, and even took up residency with Guetta in Ibiza in 2022.

Making their return to Australia for DLDK, are Dutch hardstyle duo Sub Zero Project, who have established themselves as a must-see act for EDM fans with their combination of crazy high-quality productions and a unique signature sound.

DLDK are also excited to be expanding the line-up with some incredible local talent, including RESTRICTED, Dimatik and Bobby Neon.

RESTRICTED is one of Australia’s quickest rising names, who is rapidly gaining support from

some of the industry’s biggest tastemakers and music labels. This 22 year older DJ/Producer

has carved his signature style with influences from UK Bassline, Techno, and Hard Dance, amassing over 50 million streams in 2022 alone.

Dimatik is a complete package – from heavy hitting music that teeters the line between hardstyle and psy trance, to his haunting and head-banging live shows. His stylistic approach to music has caught the attention from crowds across the globe and it’s no surprise that he’s been supported by the likes of Armin Van Buuren, Tiesto, Hardwell, KSHMR, David Guetta, & more.

Paving the way in the electronic music industry, Bobby Neon has pioneered with his masterful productions and memorable performances. From holding residencies at some of Australia’s biggest club nights, to touring around Australia making guest performances, there is no doubt his music has made a huge impact within the EDM community.

In only ten years, DLDK has transformed into a global movement – with events expanding into over twenty countries including the UK, Thailand and Singapore.

The festival brand has set themselves apart as being one of the most dedicated EDM platforms – DLDK is about more than just a fun day out, it’s about consistently promoting cutting-edge talent and keeping its finger on the pulse when it comes to pinpointing the next wave of superstars.

Putting the emphasis on elevating prime Australian EDM talent alongside global heavy hitters, DLDK is set to offer Australian fans the best of EDM talent this January.

TEG GROUP CEO GEOFF JONES said “TEG is thrilled to be bringing one of the world’s premier EDM festivals to Australian shores. Renowned for featuring some of the biggest and most influential artists in EDM, along with some very impressive production, Australian electronic music fans should definitely mark these dates in their calendar as it’s sure to be the event of the Australian summer!”

Presented by TEG Live in Australia, DLDK is set to redefine the live EDM landscape in Australia, setting a new standard for festivals and festival goers in 2024. With more information still to come, fans are urged to jump on tickets once they go on sale – they will not hang around!

BEYOND THE VALLEY ADDS 10 ADDITIONAL ARTISTS TO LINEUP AND REVEALS COUNTDOWN ARTIST

by the partae October 9, 2023
written by the partae

Beyond The Valley has just expanded its lineup with the addition of 10 new acts, including FERG (fka A$AP FERG), Flight Facilities (performing a Decade DJ Set), PARIS, Airwolf Paradise playing a b2b with Torren Foot, Tseba, C.FRIM, Sasha Fern and Jennifer Loveless.

After much anticipation, they’ve also revealed this year’s countdown artist, with Peggy Gou confirmed to ring in the new year on the Valley Stage.

Due to personal reasons, unfortunately Kelis has cancelled her full global tour and will no longer be performing.

FERG, an original member of Harlem’s A$AP Mob, will make his presence felt at Beyond The Valley. Initially acclaimed for his unique role as the fashion visionary of the group, FERG has since risen to prominence as one of the world’s most inventive hip-hop artists.

Australian icons Flight Facilities have been included in the lineup as well, known for their timeless classics and highly sought-after ID tracks. They’re returning to Beyond The Valley to showcase their Decades Show, following a successful Australian tour that saw sold-out shows.

The daily lineup has also been unveiled with the festivities kicking off on the 28th December with Airwolf Paradise and Torren Foot teaming up for a b2b set in the Dance Dome, alongside PARIS, C.FRIM, Tseba, Sasha Fern and Jennifer Loveless.

Performing on the 29th December will be RÜFÜS DU SOL, Mall Grab, The Jungle Giants, Rebūke, Jayda G and more. On the 30th, you can expect performances by Central Cee, FERG, DMA’S, Ewan McVicar, Channel Tres, Romy, and many others.

As for New Year’s Eve, the lineup boasts Peggy Gou, Overmono, STÜM, KETTAMA, DJ Heartstring, Willaris. K, BIG WETT and more to help ring in the new year in style.

Presented by Untitled Group and supported by triple j, Beyond the Valley has cemented itself as Australia’s largest multi-day music festival, having sold out of their general camping ticket allocation in under a week.

If people would like to camp there’s a very limited amount of Pre-Pitched tent packages still available. For those who would prefer to stay off site they can purchase festival only tickets. Positioned just a short 40-minute drive away from the Surf Coast, encompassing Torquay, Anglesea, Jan Juc and more, and a mere 30-minute distance from Geelong, the Beyond The Valley site holds appeal for attendees keen on transforming the occasion into a vacation.

Untitled Group are the largest independently owned music and events company in Australia, are also responsible for festivals such as Pitch Music & Arts, Wildlands, Grapevine Gathering, Ability Fest and more.

Head to www.beyondthevalley.com.au for remaining ticketing options.

“STATEMENT FROM KELIS:

“As many of you will know, it’s been a tough couple of years, but I’ve been out there working hard on the road and at home on the farm, all whilst providing stability and nurturing my children. I’m afraid to say it but I need to come off the road for a little while to regroup, to be the best mother, to be the best for myself and to thrive in the future. With that in mind I’m having to cancel or postpone all live touring for the foreseeable future. I was excited to be coming back to Australia and New Zealand and seeing you all again. I will be back; I’m making a new record and ill be back better than ever but for now it’s a needed pause. Thanks for understanding and your support all these years.

Kelis”

Diamond-Certified 21-Year-Old Artist LUM!X Releases Nostalgic Feel-Good Dance-Pop Single “Kids Like Us” In Collaboration with LUCiD & FRiENDS. Out Now on Spinnin’ Records

by the partae October 8, 2023
written by the partae

Artist: LUM!X
Title: Kids Like Us (feat. LUCiD & FRiENDS)
Label: Spinnin’ Records

Download / Stream

Austrian–Italian electronic protege LUM!X returns with his newest release – “Kids Like Us,” a unique and uplifting dance-pop smash that conveys the youthful energy of its namesake. Pairing cinematic and euphonious melodies with a dynamic, uplifting progressive house drop, LUM!X makes a true statement by incorporating an attention-grabbing and singalong chorus featuring children’s voices. The combination of joyous and nostalgic elements creates a truly special sonic experience that will transport the listener to the favorite childhood memories and partially encourage you to embrace the present moment with the same type of wonderment. LUM!X has been on a hot streak the last few years, achieving an incredible milestone of 2 billion streams across all platforms, as well as 2 diamond, 22 platinum and 9 gold certifications under his belt. LUCiD & FRiENDS is the pseudonym for a newly formed songwriting collective, whose members have been working with the likes of Karol G, Camila Cabello, Iggy Azalea, MNEK, Cheat Codes, Selena Gomez, Marshmello, Kendrick Lamar, Maroon 5, and more.

“‘Kids Like Us‘ is a song that has a very special place in my heart. As I crafted the beats and melodies, I felt the music come alive, a vibrant tapestry of sound that beckoned you to feel like a kid again. The title came from a place deep within my heart, a longing for the innocence of youth when the world was a playground, and worries were but fleeting whispers. Like a technicolor dream, the song paints vivid images of laughter, sun-drenched afternoons, and endless possibilities. Each note was a brushstroke, every lyric a stroke of nostalgia’s brush. It was a melody that transported you back in time while keeping one foot firmly in the now, a balancing act of emotion and innovation. What started out as a very uncommon and difficult topline ended up being one the most emotional songs I’ve ever worked on. The big vocal hook, together with the pop-ish verses, is something very different from what I usually produce, but for me, that’s the magic about this record” – LUM!X

At just 21 years old, Austrian–Italian musician LUM!X, real name Luca Michlmayr, is quickly becoming one of the hottest names in the global electronic music scene. To date, LUM!X‘s songs have been streamed well over 2 billion times, leading him to over 30 diamond, platinum and gold certifications. With a signature style that’s as smooth as it is hard and refreshing as it is versatile, LUM!X represents the next step in the evolution of the modern DJ, bringing with him a sound that’s not only primed for the radio and the club, but geared for the viral airwaves as well. He has collaborated with some of the biggest names in the industry already, including Gabry Ponte, DVBBS, KSHMR, and remixed the likes of Robin Schulz, Afrojack, Steve Aoki, Alan Walker, and R3HAB to name only a few. In 2022, he became one of the first DJs to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest, representing Austria in the competition. In 2023, he also won two prizes at the Amadeus Awards of Austria for Song Of The Year and Best Dance Act with his song “Halo,” featuring Pia Maria.

PLS&TY Releases Dynamic Tech House Single “Listen to My Heart” and Lays the Ground for Future Announcements

by the partae October 8, 2023
written by the partae

Artist: PLS&TY
Title: Listen To My Heart
Label: Self-release

PLS&TY is back with a dose of new music in the form of his single “Listen to My Heart,” which also lays the ground for future announcements that the Florida native has up his sleeve. The track fits right in with his dynamic signature style, opening with piano instrumentals that meld into funky melodies, progressive synths, and a driving tech-house-influenced bassline. Its catchy vocals give “Listen to My Heart” a disco influence, making the track one that is guaranteed to light up club dance floors around the globe. The new single follows his recently released “Your Love” with Kenyan singer Sofiya Nzau, and “3 Days, 2 Nights” EP earlier this year.

“‘Listen to My Heart‘ is a tech-house-focused single, fusing hard-hitting basslines and piano melodies with soulful vocals. It’s a song straight for club play, and a highlight within my live shows. DJs, check your inboxes.” – PLS&TY

Tommy Leas, a Florida native – better known as PLS&TY – is burgeoning into the electronic dance music scene with his unique sound: languid bass, captivating vocals and enough upbeat melodies to make anybody feel good. His music has amassed hundreds of millions streams across platforms… that’s if you don’t include a feature in a Hershey’s chocolate television commercial that has now reached over 1 BILLION views. PLS&TY‘s singles have charted on Billboard, have consecutively reached #1 on iTunes four times, & have been remixed by Grammy-nominated Morgan Page, Rusko, Cazzette, Bondax, and YehMe2 (1/2 of Flosstradamus latest venture). Tommy has also toured a bevy of A-list festivals including Shaky Beats, Breakaway, Electric Forest, EDC Vegas, and more. After releasing his debut “Very Special” EP, which featured platinum-selling artists like Sean Kingston, Alex Aiono (of Netflix‘s “Finding Ohana“), Wifisfuneral, and more, 2020-2022 saw PLS&TY become an early adopter of the emerging NFT technology. PLS&TY has co-designed skateboard deck NFTs for Tony Hawk‘s charity initiative, as well as visuals for celebrity athletes and even members of Congress. PLS&TY‘s NFT projects were referenced in Billboard at the #3 and #10 positions of Top Music NFT Sales in August & September of 2022 alongside Snoop Dogg, Eminem, & David Bowie. 2023 sees PLS&TY emerging with new music & artistic endeavors, all while wielding the lighthearted “mind your manners” and “please and thank you” catchphrases.

Ape Rave Club Releases Digitized, Feel-Good House Single “Let The Music Take Control”

by the partae October 8, 2023
written by the partae

Artist: Ape Rave Club
Title: Let The Music Take Control
Label: Self-release

Ape Rave Club – the world’s first performing NFT artist – is back to wow listeners with another out-of-this-world production in the form of their new single “Let The Music Take Control.” The track fits perfectly with Ape Rave Club‘s mysterious identity with its heavily digitized elements, which are present in everything from the sultry vocals that open the track to its sparkling top beat. Balanced with a groovy, deep bassline and infused with tech-house-influenced kickdrums, “Let The Music Take Control” is an upbeat, dancefloor-friendly tune that has a compelling story behind it.

The origin of the track is one and the same as the origin of Ape Rave Club, back when he was just a regular crypto ape who had made it big in the year 2031. “Giba,” as he was known back then, spent most of his time watching 3D movies at the Bored Ape Cinema, and one day found himself transported into Tomorrowland 2019 aftermovie. Like most natural-born ravers, Giba was immediately hooked – and the rave became his calling in life. He spent countless hours in his studio treehouse and then his rave cave, learning to DJ so that he could test his skills in the physical world. Shortly after, he manifested his dream of playing at Tomorrowland in 2022 on the festival’s iconic Mainstage. Ape Rave Club combines the universal language of music, special experiences, and endless ways to connect with fans on a whole new level. Keep your eyes peeled for more updates coming soon at Ape Rave Club.

Nicky Romero Continues His “Nightvision” EP Rollout with Dark Dancefloor Filler “Desire” With TELYKAST & Linney. Out Now as Foretaste of Nicky’s Forthcoming “Nightvision” Open-To-Close Solo Show

Title: Desire
Label: Protocol Recordings

Nicky Romero joins forces with artist duo TELYKAST and singer-songwriter Linney for his new track “Desire,” which is the third track from his forthcoming EP “Nightvision” and the very first solo show of the same name. With its mysteriously emotive vocals and contrasting dark basslines, “Desire” continues Romero‘s more underground and club-influenced sound for the project that he debuted with “Give In” and later continued with “Mahoya” from earlier this year. Linney‘s stunning vocal performance sets the stage while Romero and TELYKAST weave in deep, growling bass elements with ominous melodies, making “Desire” a sultry club track that’s sure to heat up dance floors this fall and winter and on December 02 at Amsterdam‘s AFAS Live during Nicky Romero‘s open-to-close performance. The young duo TELYKAST has amassed millions of streams on their original releases and remixed the likes of Imagine Dragons, Khalid, Tate McRae, Black Eyed Peas, Jennifer Lopez, and Daddy Yankee, while Linney‘s music is featured on TV shows such as Riverdale, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Ghosted: Love Gone Missing, Teen Mom, and more. Nicky‘s full “Nightvision” EP drops on December 01, just a day before his open-to-close solo show.

After taking the world by storm with early hits such as “Legacy” with Krewella, “Like Home” with NERVO and the #1 single “I Could Be The One” with Avicii, Nicky Romero quickly proved that his talent is ever-evolving and here to stay. After launching his Protocol Recordings imprint in 2012, the renowned performer, producer, and label head continued his personal successes with a string of high-profile releases, ranging from collaborations with Armin van Buuren, David Guetta, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, W&W, Timmy Trumpet and Steve Aoki to remixes for the likes of Bebe Rexha, Robin Schulz, Kygo, Rita Ora, Steve Aoki, Martin Garrix, Jess Glynne and more. While showcasing his label’s roster via his weekly Protocol Radio show, Nicky Romero continues to innovate and evolve, and with his annual “Nicky Romero & Friends” ADE showcase and the launch of Monocule alter-ego, he keeps proving his ability to turn into gold everything he touches and continues to push boundaries with each show concept and new release, forever instilling himself as a dance music icon.

Highline Interview

by the partae October 6, 2023
written by the partae

Where are you currently based?

Sydney.

How did the band form?

We started playing together a couple of times during highschool. We were all in the school jazz band and just slowly started to get together and muck around. About a year after we left school though we started rehearsing properly and giving it a proper go (2019).

What’s been happening recently?

We’ve just finished recording our debut album earlier in the year which is really exciting. In the last few months however we’ve all done a bit of travel and taken some time away before we dive back in to rehearsing and touring

Your single ‘Exit A’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

Like a lot of songs of ours the sound for this was developed over a couple trips away together to the country where we spend days at a time working on nothing but music together. The structure and texture was slowly fleshed out over about a year and then the lyrics all came together over a couple hours after 11 months of writers block and mumbling.

What is the meaning behind Exit A?

EA is a song about losing a friend. It’s reflecting on the loss and realising that the writing was on the wall so to speak “I should have seen this coming from miles away”.

It’s frustrating losing people that once meant so much to you and this song expresses that frustration.

This song was one of those tunes where the general premise was always there but no progress was really made for about a year then it all sort of wrote itself within a couple of hours.

The title came about because the chords were E and A, so we just called the song EA, which is how we arrived at Exit A.

The song captures the sadness that comes with witnessing this happen and the reflective emotions that come with recognising things aren’t how they used to be, and wondering whether you could have stopped it from happening.

How did you come up with the title Exit A?

The chords to the song are E and A so we just used to call it ‘EA’ when rehearsing early on. We wanted to give a little nod to this work in progress title and James came up with Exit A which we all loved a lot.

Please tell us about your songwriting process:

Our process has evolved over the last 4 years to become a lot more collaborative. A lot of the time Sam will come with a song that’s more or less half written and then we pick it a part and put it back together as a group but on this album there are a few songs that weren’t like that at all.

Who or what influences your sound and songwriting?

What are your highlights of 2023?

I think definitely recording this album. We were at Golden Retriever studio’s in Marrickville With Callum Howell (Ocean Alley) and it was a very special moment for all of us to see this project come together after so much time and hard work. We also had some shows early in the year with Old Mervs that were a blast and our first festival Ice Breakers in Sydney which was just unreal.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2023 going into 2024?

Release new music. Support South Summit and play our first show in Tassie on the 5th of Jan at Good Gumnuts Festival!

Next year we plan to tour nationally and get this album out there into the world!

Favourite food and place to hangout?

Pesto Pasta. Our favourite place to hang out is anywhere with each other.

Moksi Starts New Chapter of His Career with Release of First Studio Album as Solo Artist With 12-Track “Moksi Crew.” Out Now on Barong Family

by the partae October 6, 2023
written by the partae

Artist: Moksi
Title: Moksi Crew
Label: Barong Family

Download / Stream

The Dutch artist and producer Moksi returns with his third studio album – “Moksi Crew,” this time with Samir as the solo artist behind the name and a whole 12 tracks to prove that he is more than ready for this fresh start. On “Moksi Crew,” the listener is taken on a sonic journey that expands beyond Moksi‘s signature house-oriented sound into all types of mixes and fusions of house, bass, and techno, which is evident on every track. Expanding on its predecessor’s forward-thinking sonic architecture, “Moksi Crew” pulsates with untamed energy and channels the raw spirit of the dance floor. The album is named as a tribute to the deep-rooted connection with the fans – the Crew – honoring their enduring bond and the ruff’n ready energy they bring to gigs across the globe. The opening notes of “The Treble” with Mike Cervello start with minimal tech house beats and add funky melodies you can truly get down to, while numbers like “Killer Flex” see Moksi adding hip-hop vocals from Bok Nero to truly bridge genres. One of the album’s hardest tracks is “Me to Blame,” which rides on bass and house beats with mechanical synths, stabbing basslines, and distorted vocals. “There Is Life” is a true techno gem to close out the album, complete with spoken word riffs. More than just the next chapter, “Moksi Crew” is an urgent statement of intent. Harder, better, faster, stronger, yet unmistakably familiar. While Samir has had quite the journey to arrive at the point of “Moksi Crew,” this is simply the beginning of a brand and exciting new era.

“When I started Moksi in 2015, I never would’ve thought it would turn out to be such a versatile act. While pioneering the bass house genre, I quite organically expanded my sound to a much wider range within dance music. Touching on house, tech house, melodic house, deep house, and techno. For the “Moksi Crew” album, I wanted to keep building on all those influences. The goal was to make an album that reflects me as an artist while challenging the popular sounds within today’s house music revival. My approach to my production process was quite technical for what I’m used to. All to find interesting new sound design techniques to make it sound different from other music I’ve been working on in the past. It was so fun to actually get my hands dirty and rediscover myself. My goal as a producer is never to reproduce other people’s sound or to release music that connects easily to the masses. The contrary is true; I want to make music that pushes a sound forward. Music that builds on the shoulders of all the house music giants that came before me. The goal should always be growth, never success, because success is the thief of ambition. With that in mind, I hope this album will add to the ever-evolving story of house music.” – Moksi about “Moksi Crew“

Moksi began their musical career as a duo in 2015. They caught the attention of Yellow Claw and released their single “Getting Higher” on Barong Family, which put Moksi on the map and eventually led to the release of 2 albums and numerous successful singles on labels like STMPD RCRDS, Confession, Revealed, Barong Family, Musical Freedom, and many others. That same year, Moksi made their stage debut, which has led to an incredible list of amazing performances over the years at clubs and festivals like Tomorrowland, EDC Las Vegas, Spring Awakening, Ultra Music Festival, Lollapalooza, Brooklyn Mirage, Academy LA, Ushuaïa, Bootshaus and many more. Keep an eye out for more news from Moksi coming soon as 2023 and the release of “Moksi Crew” marks a new start for Moksi as a solo artist and producer.

Duxie Franklin Interview

by the partae October 6, 2023
written by the partae

Where are you currently based?

I’m in a quiet suburban area in the Melbourne’s south-east. Nature is my biggest creative inspiration so in a perfect world I would live by the coast and/or lots of bushland.

How did you first start playing music?

As a reluctant yet talented child dragged by my mother to weekly piano lessons. I hated practicing but I loved music and even started composing and writing my own songs from about 9 years old.

What’s been happening recently?

In my little corner of the time-space continuum, I have been rehearsing lots with my band, recording and producing more new music and brainstorming how to film a music video which is set in a lounge room submerged in a swimming pool. Stay tuned!

Your latest single ‘Kitschy Coo’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

I wrote the song very quickly – or it wrote itself, as sometimes happens – after a late night watching a gig. Someone I idolised was up on stage and seeing them perform was a reality check for me as I realised they were nothing like I had imagined.

What does this track mean to you?

The track has grown in meaning over time and it’s sound has changed; it became groovier, more fun and light-hearted. I still have no clue why I started singing ‘kitschy kitschy coo’ for the choruses but it stuck! Now the song serves as a cheeky reminder to beware of unfounded infatuation with people you only know from a distance.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with?

I recorded ‘Kitschy Coo’ over the last year with Simon Rigoni from 2-Inch Tape at his Room 29 Studio. I think things took a long time because we were getting used to each other’s working process and figuring out the best way to produce the track.

How did you approach the recording process?

This song definitely took a journey to end up where it is now! We started with the basic guitar tracks and a scratch vocal and then added, added and added some more. At some point I felt I could hear some strings, especially through the bridge which needed a lush, majestic treatment. So I wrote parts for a 6-piece string ensemble and played them all myself. Other parts included congas, a 12-string guitar, multiple backing vocals, synths and organs.

Simon complained (probably justifiably so) a lot about the number of tracks – it made mixing somewhat challenging!

Any shows coming up?

Yes! On October 15th we’re doing a huge launch show at Shotkickers in Thornbury from 2pm. Crumbe are launching their debut album; 2-Inch Tape are launching the single ‘What I Need’; and Fawkner Walking Society are launching their single ‘Cheddar Road’. They’re calling it ‘the launch party to beat all launch parties’.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

I love Eloise’s album Drunk on a Flight. The production and the song-writing as well as her voice and those keys are just divine. Also I’ve been roller-skating lately to a soundtrack of 1950s doo-wop swoon nuggets.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2023 going into 2024?

Launching ‘Kitschy Coo’ and the music video is my major milestone for this year and still an ongoing project. I’m planning to get out and be gigging more over the summer, solo, in my duo Duxie & Luxie, and with my band. I will also continue working on recording and production for the other songs I’ve got in the pipeline. And of course I will spend an inordinate amount of time at the beach and in a swimming pool.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

A perfectly cooked authentic Italian pasta with lots of oil, salt and cheese! Also, bubble tea.

Favourite hang-out is my secret underground roller-skating car park.

PACES – Three Summers LP

by the partae October 6, 2023
written by the partae

A lot has happened for Paces (Mikey Perry)  in the last few years. Significant life changes and a stylistic relaunch that only his closest friends might have seen coming. Breaking into our hearts 10 years ago as a producer of joyful, future bass music, his recent pivot to deeply personal pop-punk took many by surprise. Subbing-in for fuzzy synths and tropical tuned percussion were blaring guitars and for the first time Mikey’s own vocals. Last year’s single Adrift was the bellwether followed by a string of tracks that not only sounded different but played a distinct role in Mikey’s life. Rather than an opportunity for play and escapism, Perry wrote an album’s worth of remedial tunes and cathartic lyrics. “I started songwriting as a form of therapy. I ended up really loving it and wrote this whole album just for myself, never intending to show anyone. It helped me to redirect some of that negative energy into something positive.”

Written to remain private, Paces has been moved by the response to Adrift, Butterflies, Brain Got Hands and Silver Lining, the singles that previewed the forthcoming Three Summers LP.

Yet, as each of these tunes came out the response from new and old fans became more and more heartening. Paces found that opening up about interpersonal, romantic and internal struggles was not just of personal benefit but something that he could offer the world. Followings some initial reluctance, Paces is now proud of the impact he could make by being so candid. “After some encouragement from close friends, I decided to release it and I’m so glad I did. It’s been heartwarming to hear from people who’ve connected with the initial singles on a mental health level.”  An exceptional collection of intimate, intriguing and inspirational tracks, the Three Summers LP consolidates a tumultuous period into an album of bare moments and raw memories. “.. for me this album is about finding my voice, beginning a new chapter, and it’s a snapshot of where I’ve been for three summers.”  For the first time in nearly 3 years Paces will be hitting the stage for the Three Summers LP album tour. Debuting his live vocals, the string of east coast dates will be undoubtedly full of special moments. Paces – Three Summers LP is out on all platforms, 6th of October via Off Leash Records with the supporting tour on the following dates.

17th November: The Gasometer Hotel, Naarm/Melbourne

18th November: Oxford Art Factory, Eroa/Sydney

25th November: Stranded Bar, Meanjin/Brisbane

Chayce Kennedy Interview

by the partae October 4, 2023
written by the partae

Where are you currently based?

I am based in Penticton, British Columbia in Canada.

How did you first start playing music?

I grew up with a piano in my home, and I would always fiddle around with notes, so my parents then got me into piano lessons. I eventually started looking up my favourite songs and finding the lyrics and chords, and then I would play and sing them. I have videos on my childhood iPad of me singing and playing with the iPad propped up on the piano shelf right in front of my face. The videos are pretty hilarious and precious at the same time. Good memories – haha!

What’s been happening recently?

For the past 7 months, I’ve been working on my 5-song debut EP ‘Yours Truly’ with Brian West and Ryan Stewart. It’s been a very exciting and inspiring time recording music and being in the studio working with such talented producers.

I just released the first single off the EP, “Mr. Super Fine”, and the rest of the songs will be released over the next 6 months .

Your latest single “Mr. Super Fine” is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

I wanted to create a fun-loving story with a bubbly, very pop sound.

“Mr. Super Fine” is influenced by young love and my experiences with it so far. I’m only 19, so I don’t have tons of experience, but what I do know is the feeling of meeting someone new and having the feeling of curiosity, being hopeful, and excited. It’s such a fun feeling finding someone you click with and hoping they feel the same way and want to keep getting to know you.

How did this single come about?

I was sitting at my piano in my studio just fiddling around with chords and melodies and then randomly came up with the line “Mr. Super Fine, when can I call you mine” and thought that was a pretty good catch line so built upon that.

What does “Mr. Super Fine” mean to you?

“Mr. Super Fine” means someone who I feel like is my Prince Charming. In the moment, when you just meet someone, everything feels so shiny and new. You don’t know much about this person, but what you do know is how you feel around them. Nothing is complicated yet, it’s just exciting. So to me, “Mr. Super Fine” means the feelings of fun, exciting, hopeful young love.

Where and when did you record/produce/master?

I recorded “Mr. Super Fine” in April in Vancouver with Ryan Stewart, who produced the song. It was mastered by Bradley from Mr. Smith Productions.

Please tell us about your experience with producer Ryan Stewart:

I’ve worked with Ryan Stewart before and he’s always such a pleasure to work with. His studio environment is relaxing and comfortable and it’s such an inspiring space. He is super organized and we get down to creating right away and the process is quite quick when things are rolling.

Ryan is very creative and it’s very cool seeing him put the beat to the song and all the additional sounds to make it come to life. The whole studio experience is amazing and I love it so much.

How does this track fit in with your debut EP that’s coming in 2024?

My EP “Yours Truly” targets many subjects such as body image, mental health, some young love as well as some of the struggles with love.

“Mr. Super Fine” fits well in my opinion as it’s a fun loving, happy track that brings some light to the EP and contrasts some of the other more serious topics.

Any live shows coming up?

Yes! I am beyond stoked to be opening for the Juno Award-winning Good Lovelies on October 26th at The Creekside theatre in Lake Country.

How has Taylor Swift inspired you to play music?

I went to the 1989 tour in Vancouver with my mom and Taylor put on an exceptional performance. I saw the way she interacted with the crowd, her stage presence, her energy, and the whole environment was surreal.

I knew after watching that concert and seeing her passion for music come alive and light up the stage that I wanted to pursue a career in music.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

At the moment, I’m listening to Tate McRae, Taylor Swift as always, Sia, and Jamie Fine to list a few. I’m always listening to many artists though.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2023?

For the remainder of 2023, I’m performing at venues throughout the Okanagan, planning and filming music videos for the next singles getting released and – as always – writing new music!

Favourite food and place to hangout?

My favourite food is probably fries. My favourite place to hangout would be either the beach during the summer with my friends , or if I’m by myself, it would definitely be my home studio.

Colourburn Interview

by the partae October 4, 2023
written by the partae

Where are you currently based?
Melbourne, Australia.

How and when did the band form?
We formed in 2021, though I (Josh) started writing in 2020. Jack joined first with Jordyn joining about a year later.

What’s been happening recently?

We’ve launched our first single which is super exciting to finally get that out into the world!
Now we’re preparing to launch more music in the coming months.

Your single ‘Star’ is out now which is off your upcoming EP out on November 24, what influenced the sound and songwriting?
Honestly it’s hard to pinpoint it haha we have so many different influences. At the time I loved the grunge vibes from bands like Narrow Head and Fleshwater but then I also was digging bands like Citizen and Teenage wrist (along with a heap of others). I didn’t really think too much about our sound and just went with what felt right.

What does this track mean to you?
It means the world! Being one of the songs I first wrote for this band, it’s awesome to finally get it out there.

What can we expect from your upcoming EP?
There’s a lot of variety, from mosh-worthy riffs to catchy lyrics, I think there’s something in it for everyone.

Where did you record/produce/master?

Chris Vernon produced, mixed and mastered.

How did you approach the recording process?

We went in with an open mind and basically let Chris throw any ideas at us we had and collaborated with that to try and make it the best we could.

Any shows coming up?
Not as of yet though we’ve been working hard in the rehearsal room perfecting our live performance.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2023?

We’ve got some more releases coming, dropping a music video for our next single, as well as something else in December which is a bit of a secret for now 😉

Favourite food and place to hangout?
Home made pizza and probably on the couch playing mario kart haha.

HIGHLINE return with heartfelt new single ‘EXIT A’

by the partae October 3, 2023
written by the partae

With their first release for 2023, Eora/Sydney’s Highline channel grief, loss and regret on the beautifully bittersweet ‘Exit A’; a perfectly crafted indie ballad that showcases the 5-piece as a rising force in the scene.

‘Exit A’ explores the loss of a friend and the inescapable sense of regret that follows. Although thematically the track is somber and reflective, sonically ‘Exit A’ feels overwhelmingly cathartic; with melancholic vocal melodies, atmospheric synth work and dreamy guitars that flood the mix at the apex of the song. ‘Exit A’ is a perfect example of how dynamics can shape a song, and although the chord progression is simple, the layered production and songwriting technique on ‘Exit A’ shows the young band are at the peak of their powers.

“Exit A is a song about losing a friend. It’s reflecting on the loss and realizing that the writing was on the wall so to speak “I should have seen this coming from miles away”. It’s frustrating losing people that once meant so much to you and this song expresses that frustration. The song captures the sadness that comes with witnessing this happen and the reflective emotions that come with recognising things aren’t how they used to be, and wondering whether you could have stopped it from happening.

This song was one of those tunes where the general premise was always there but no progress was really made for about a year then it all sort of wrote itself within a couple of hours. The title came about because the chords were E and A, so we just called the song EA, which is how we arrived at Exit A.”

SAM RIGNEY, HIGHLINE

Written during a trip to the Blue Mountains, the songwriting for ‘Exit A’ was a group effort for the band with everyone pitching in to get the song done. Once the songwriting had been completed, the band headed to Golden Retriever studios in Marrickville to work with Cal Howell, known best for his work with Ocean Alley.

“The song came about pretty organically. It started with Rhys bringing the chords in and we were pretty eager to smash out a big outro to it; Sam brought the words and the story inspired by a personal experience. We did a little songwriting trip to the Blue Mountains where we finished off most of the song. Then later we did another trip to Jamberoo and all chipped in to finish off lyrics and flesh out the outro. We have always done writing trips away and these are always some of our favourite moments together as a group.

We recorded it with Cal Howell (Ocean Alley) as the producer, at Golden Retriever Studios in Marrickville. Before we went in, Cal helped break down the song before we went in and made sure that outro builded right until the end. Loved working with Cal – really passionate and fun too. I like how this one has a slow and sweet swell. The outro has mostly an instrumental vibe, as opposed to a melody-driven solo, which is new for us.”

SAM RIGNEY, HIGHLINE

Highline have gone from strength to strength over the last couple of years, currently sitting at 1.6m+ streams on Spotify alone, 2k+ followers on Instagram and 15k+ on Tik Tok. They’ve received consistent airplay on triple j (‘Chasing Heaven’ (2021), ‘Staying Sane’ (2021) and ‘Enough for You and Me’ (2022)), editorial support from Pilerats, Life Without Andy, Tonedeaf, Music Feeds, The AU Review, LivewireAU and many more. They’ve also made big moves on the performance front, supporting the likes of Old Mervs, Rum Jungle, Dear Sunday, Pacific Avenue, and playing this years Icebreaker Festival at the Factory Theatre in Sydney alongside Tyne-James Organ, Annie Hamilton, Death by Denim, The Moving Stills and Asha Jefferies. Highline are just starting to hit their stride, and with ‘Exit A’ it seems the tail end of 2023 will be huge for the up-and-coming band.

PRAISE FOR HIGHLINE

“Backed by addictively nostalgic guitars and some clattery drums, frontman Sam Rigney marries the unbridled fire of youth with the cool rush of maturation”

LIFE WITHOUT ANDY

“It’s catchy, crafty indie-pop that brings together influences spread across indie, brit-pop and alt-rock”

PILERATS

“their music is an exciting mix of indie rock incorporating some brit-pop elements. It’s characterized by sweet guitars and emotive melodies lending itself to their own familiar yet exciting brand of rock.”

THE AU REVIEW

“one of my fave festival memories is belting out the kooks as a 19yo as the sun set at falls and this one has me thinking highline are set for a big stage sometime soon.”

DECLAN BYRNE, TRIPLE J

“It sounds like the singer wants to let rip – you can tell he’s got a rasp not dissimilar to Jimmy from The Vanns or Caleb of Spacey Jane. The trick they pull though is to keep this one grounded and controlled.”

DAVE RUBY HOWE, TRIPLE J UNEARTHED

“Catchy melodies bring together the best of indie-rock and brit-pop into a very good time, ensuring the band should be on your radar this year”

“There are hints of Olivia Rodrigo and Dua Lipa in “LA Talk”, with ASHY’s luscious vocals sliding effortlessly over a lightly funky bassline.”
ASHY – Rolling Stone Australia

“With subtle hints of pop electronica, floaty synth-laced melodies, and delicate guitar blends, Daily J has carved themselves a niche that’s proving popular, particularly on the summer festival circuit.”
Daily J – Live Nation ‘One’s To Watch’

“Jordyn With A Why has only been releasing music professionally since 2021 but in that time, she has emerged as an artist to watch; an important new storyteller joining the current wave of young Pacific Islanders putting their music on the map.”
Jordyn With A Why – ABC Pacific

“‘TONGUE’ yet again showcases Ash Wallace and Gabe Everett’s innate creative understanding, with the former’s sugary vocals flourishing over a resolutely upbeat rhythm. It’s difficult to not to get swept up in the addictive rush of such pure pop.”
FOLEY – Rolling Stone Australia

“West Auckland has been a proven breeding ground for musical talent over the years. Park Rd, the latest act to emerge out of the Titirangi hills, hadn’t released their first EP when they played a sold out gig at the central city’s The Tuning Fork. Their motor’s running hot, and showing no signs of cooling.”
