A Is For Arrows

by the partae September 16, 2020
written by the partae

Where are you currently based?

Toronto, Ontario

How did you first start playing music?

My mom put me in guitar lessons when I was younger and I actually hated them! Crazy, right? It made me put the guitar down for years. Funny that I’d figure out my passion was music years later. After I graduated highschool, I started putting covers up on youtube and that was it! I was in love with music. I didn’t want to do anything else, especially when I started writing my own lyrics.

What’s been happening recently and how  has your Covid experience been so far?

A lot of writing, my goal right now is one song a day! The covid experience has been an emotional rollercoaster for sure. At the beginning it was tough, my anxiety was pretty bad- I had a lot of fear around the whole situation, but as time went on I started to get into a great routine. I learned how to manage my anxieties by exercising more frequently…also, I go for long walks and listen to new music and I’ve been connecting with friends(distanced and outside). Finding ways to make this new normal feel like the old normal.

Your new single ‘Can’t Stop’ is now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

YES! Well, I’m obsessed with arpeggiated bass. If I could have it in every song, I would. At the time, I was listening to a lot of ‘Now, Now’ – they’re this amazing indie band that I love. I was inspired by their lo-fi 80’s pop sound, so at first I wasn’t even trying to write a song. I was just trying to produce a beat that kind of emulated what the songs on their album made me FEEL. They made me feel care-free, that hands up, driving through the night, wind in your hair type of vibe.

How did you go about writing ‘Can’t Stop’?

After I made the beat, It kind of sat there for a while, not really inspiring anything but one day, out of nowhere -one line and a melody popped into my head. “can’t stop lovin you” just spilled out. A couple months after that, I held a writing camp in a log cabin in the middle of the woods with zero reception (a recipe for a horror film) and finished the song with my artist/producer friends. I think it’s pretty obvious what it’s about haha. It was just one of those songs that had to be written.

Where and when did you record and who with?

The song was actually written last November 2019. It stayed a demo until the middle of July 2020. In order to get this song to the world, we basically worked every night for a month. Late nights trying to get it right!  I worked with one of my writing partners Ben Nudds and producer Joel Stouffer. Ben was there for all of my vocal booth breakdowns haha.

What programs/instruments did you use?

I use logic when I demo a song or a beat. I usually play some guitar and the rest are programmed instruments!

What do you like to do away from music?

Photography

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Dominic Fike

What’s planned for the remainder of 2020 going into 2021?

Work, work, work, work, work… and i’m so down for it.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

Pho is my favourite food right now. Probably always haha! My favourite place to hangout is definitely my place of course! Couldn’t find a better vibe!

STREAM “THE ONE” HERE

On the new track, Richard notes:
“The One is a very important song to me. It was the first song written and recorded out of all of the sessions I’d done last year. This song is about falling in love. Sometimes we are in a position in life where we need change or help, and sometimes you stumble upon ‘The One’ to make that change.“

Richard’s new single follows his early 2020 release “Proud,” an anthemic tribute of appreciation to the strong women who surround him in life, which garnered over 330K streams across platforms. The two singles prelude his upcoming debut album, Richard, a stunning full-length debut which was co-written and recorded between Vancouver and L.A. alongside veteran songwriters Brian Howes, JVP, and Ryan Stewart.

This charismatic pop recording artist, singer/songwriter and guitarist builds on a CV already stacked high with countless accolades and awards, two EPs, and performances on marquee stages from Toronto to Los Angeles and many points in between as both headliner and sought-after supporting artist.

Today, Sydney punk rock band Kids Of Yesterday announce their debut album Escape Planet, to be released Friday November 6. The first single to drop is the punk rock banger Reefer Madness.  Reefer Madness draws heavy influence from the film of the same name released in the 1930's and seeks to undo the damage it caused to an industry that could quite literally save our species. The song harps back to the classic punk of Bad Religion, NOFX with a touch of Frenzal Rhomb. Reefer Madness introduces listeners to Kids Of Yesterdays comedic side. Kids of Yesterday is the brainchild of singer/ guitarist / chief songwriter Duncan Davidson. The band first formed in 2010 in the jam room of a Tempe share-house. Over the years founding members Duncan Davidson and Joseph Lamond have been joined by many talented musicians in the line up, as the band gigged frequently throughout Sydney, while self-releasing several EPs.  2020 saw the band enter The Grove studios on the central coast of NSW to record their debut album with producer Jack Nigro (DMA's, Skegss, Vacations). The result being one of the best punk rock albums to come out of Australia in a very long time.

ABOUT KIDS OF YESTERDAY

Sydney-based punk rock band KoY (Kids of Yesterday) first formed in 2010 in the jam room of a Tempe share-house. Over the years founding members Duncan Davidson and Joseph Lamond have been joined by many talented musicians in the KoY line up, as the band gigged frequently throughout Sydney, released several EPs, gained high rotation air time on stations such as Triple J Unearthed, headlined Home Grown in 2013, and toured interstate before taking a break over the last few years.  Ten whole years may have passed since those early days in Tempe, but the passion and drive for the KoY project never lapsed, with Davidson continuing to write new material for the band even during their hiatus. 2020 has seen Davidson and Lamond join forces once again, stripping KoY back to a duo, and releasing the bands much-anticipated debut album, ‘Escape Planet’ – set for release this November

“The energy is high and the music is as vibrant as her hair.” – Ones To Watch

“Boisterous and triumphant in its presentation…” – Lyrical Lemonade

“‘Fall Apart’ is a relatable reflection on cynicism in oneself.” – Coup De Main

“Her vocals are mellow, similar to Billie Eilish or Beabadoobee.” – EARMILK

“Combining youthful, quirky lyrics with an intensely catchy beat…” – EUPHORIA.

“The toe-tapping song weaves introspective and complex lyrics.” – Blanc Magazine

“Generating infectious electronica-infused pop…” – Atwood Magazine

merci, mercy creates disarming pop anthems that are instilled with a profound sophistication and spellbinding insight of youthful disarray. Today, fresh from her debut live-streamed performance via ISOL-AID over the weekend, the 19-year-old shares the clever video for her current single ‘Fall Apart’, along with some further exciting news for fans – the announcement of her debut EP and her first ever live show at Sydney’s Oxford Art Factory next month.

Due for release on October 16 via Liberation Records, no thank you, no thanks offers a snapshot of merci, mercy’s life at the age of 18. Featuring the previously released songs ‘Fucked Myself Up’, ‘Fall Apart’ and four additional alternative pop anthems that draw on both her personal experiences and observations, the EP shines a light on mental health, self-doubt and the trials associated with love.

“It was quite a therapeutic process for me to write these songs and I hope they might connect with people who have been through similar experiences,” merci, mercy shares.
The bright clip for ‘Fall Apart’ was directed by Charli XCX-collaborator Bianca Bosso and Sam Murphy from The Interns, who have played a key role in bringing the unique world of merci, mercy to life. Here we have the animated world of the young artist colliding with her real self for the first time.
“I was so excited to film my first video. I was a little nervous, but my sister bought champagne to loosen up during filming, and after a few takes, it was so fun. I love how Bianca has built an entire animated world for me, and with this video it’s just taken it to the next level.”

‘Fall Apart,’ was produced by Edwin White (Vance Joy) and Joel Quartermain (G Flip, Meg Mac), and mixed by Spike Stent (CHVRCHES, Grimes, Post Malone) and juxtaposes the artist’s tough girl exterior with her tender heart. Spinning on triple j locally and added to a long list of playlists across Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon, the song has enamoured fans, and in conjunction with debut single ‘Fucked Myself Up’, has seen her streaming numbers grow to over 4 million.

Meanwhile, that aforementioned first single has found a home on airwaves throughout Europe, receiving spins across radio stations in Austria, Belgium, France, Germany and Switzerland, including full playlist adds to Eldoradio, Flux FM, Das Ding and Couleur 3.

Blessed with having the experience of living abroad as a young teen, merci, mercy is now back in her home country of Australia and ready to let the world in on her story. Lucky fans in her hometown of Sydney will have the opportunity to see her performing songs on the eve of her debut EP release at the Oxford Art Factory. The EP was premiered exclusively via Good Intent.

Raro creates a truly unique brand of music that will burrow into your cerebral cortex. He debuted in 2019 with the release of his single ‘Cat N Mouse’, which was aired on FBi Radio. The music video was quickly added to rotation on MTV’s Call & Response program.

CASPER UNVEILS THE POWER OF COLLABORATION IN NEW SINGLE ‘TRICK OF THE LIGHT’

by the partae September 14, 2020
written by the partae

“Big feeling in this track. Its got a Safia style grandiosity to it” Dave Ruby Howe, Triple J Unearthed

“I’m liking when CASPIA goes large and sends you spinning with his dramatic pop Oomph” Declan Byrne, Triple J Unearthed

“ALONE is a shimmering and sultry slice of indie-electronic listening bliss.” Happy Mag

CASPIA follows up his debut single ‘Alone’ with his uplifting new song TRICK OF THE LIGHT. His distinctly intimate vocals and electronic sewn songwriting bare all, unveiling the power of collaboration. CASPIA is the solo project by Byron Bay based Multi-instrumentalist ANT BEARD from Caravãna Sun.

TRICK OF THE LIGHT was co-written/ produced by Eskimo Joe’s JOEL QUATERMAIN (Merci, Mercy, Meg Mac) and was written pre-lockdown in Melbourne FEB, 2020. Premiered on PILERATS, this song is already making waves as CASPIA makes it two from two.

“For me, TRICK OF THE LIGHT helped to reveal the parts of myself that have been conditioned. The more we observe how we become our own trick of the light, the more we can value our authentic self.” says CASPIA

CASPIA has gained global notoriety for his highly developed sense of control and restraint in his work, as well as a breath-taking level of emotion and personality in his performance.

“The inspiration behind TRICK OF THE LIGHT was an observation of how others promote the best parts of themselves in order to fit in to society, to feel ‘good enough’. Although, as we finished up our writing session in a north Melbourne pub, scrawling lyrics on a napkin, we knew this song was about us. We shifted the lyrics from 3rd to 1st person and the song was finished”.

TRICK OF THE LIGHT is complemented by an intimate VIDEO produced by Cr38or, Renae Saxby & Caspia. It showcases Caspia’s true openness and desire to lead with honesty and transparency in a bid to truly connect.

“This incredibly creative experience truly highlighted the power of collaboration and how artists can come together to create something, greater than the sum of its parts. Capturing a raw performance to camera was paramount as we pushed past my perceived barriers and ended up positioning me well outside my comfort zone, yet somehow truly myself”.

Gaining huge momentum off the back of his debut single ALONE premiered by TheMusic.com, which saw over 100k views in the first 2 weeks of release, TRICK OF THE LIGHT will feature on his upcoming E.P.,  set for release in mid November

Where are you currently based? We're currently based in sunny Brisbane and suspicious of anyone that bails to arguably better interstate music scenes, so it'll probably stay that way for now. How did you first start playing music? I'll be honest, I was only 50% interested in being in another guitar-based rock band and only went along for a jam but it was so good right from the start, it was love at first strum.   What's been happening recently and how has your Covid experience been so far? Apart from having some shows cancelled earlier in the year, we've been busy where we can, trading ideas though group chats, doing responsible video content and I think a rehearsal was booked the second day the studio was open. With restrictions lifting, we've been starting to get things rolling again, finally releasing the EP, merch etc Your new EP God Damn! is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting? I think that's pretty obvious, haha. One thing that we've been conscious of is making the tunes swing and not being too heavy or plodding. That's fine but there's enough of that round at the moment. We want booty-shakin' toe-tappers in our set. How did you go about writing the music? Everyone has a stockpile of riffs laying around, so it's just a case of bringing them to rehearsals and seeing what works. Sometimes things get re-worked a lot, change key, tempo etc. The opening riff for Coup de Grace was something I've had for years but that chorus was worked out on the spot by everyone and took about 10 minutes to come together. Where and when did you record/produce/master and who with? We recorded with Brock Weston at Bedlam Studios and got it mastered at Truth Studios. What programs/equipment did you use? I can't comment on the recording set-up. I should've paid more attention but I trusted Brock knew what he was doing and just focused on the guitar-playing. That was a Les Paul through the house amp. I'm not really a gear/tech guy; as long as it sounded good and had the energy, that's my main concern. What did you find most challenging and rewarding throughout the creation of the EP? It wasn't really that challenging because we were well-rehearsed and knew what we were doing heading in. I'd had a good idea of what I wanted for the guitars so I just went and did it. Reward-wise, hearing the songs without playing them was great and listening back to all the guitar ideas come together. But I think hearing the harmony vocals getting layered up was really great to hear as I've never been in a band that did anything like that before. What do you like to do away from music? Worry that I'm not doing enough music. Who are you listening to at the moment? Right now, Beastie Boys-Check Your Head. Lately, I've been listening to a lot of stuff that's not Void-related; Bohren and Der Club of Gore, Air, William Basinski, Ennio Morricone...got to keep a balance! Can't be all late 60s/early 70s rock. I suppose it can......   What's planned for the remainder of 2020 going into 2021? Got a couple of gigs lined up, release of the EP and a clip and already talking about going back to record. We've got a few new songs in the set ready to go, so always moving forward. Favourite food and place to hangout? Well, I'm the only non-vegetarian in the band so it's not very representative. That's a big question.....I do love a good wood-fired pizza. Favourite cuisine is probably French but Spanish and Italian goes pretty hard too...all the cheese...and now with all the burger joints around....can I just say I love food. The worse it is for my health or wallet, the better Favourite place to hang out is Junk Bar! Such a wonderful atmosphere, great staff, amazing drinks. Just an overall cool vibe. It's a shame that we're probably a bit loud for it but maybe we could re-arrange the set to something a bit more acoustic and stripped-back. https://www.facebook.com/VibrationsFromTheVoid/

by the partae September 14, 2020
written by the partae

Vibrations From The Void are a Brisbane rock’n’roll band that fuses rock with even more rock with danceable grooves for an infectious good time. Hailing from the humid depths of the sunlight-soaked Brisbane, VFTV are set to release their debut EP, God Damn! on September 18th.

Recorded by Brock Weston (Bugs, Regular Band, The Jensens) live at Bedlam Records their debut EP is 5 tracks of high-octane, caffeine-fuelled riffery, featuring new single “Margarita Maria“, “Resurrect My Mojo” and fan favourite “Coup de Grâce” which features the sing-a-long chorus to end all sing-a-long choruses.

The band (featuring Ryan Murr, Brendan Dawe, Peter Green and John Larney) formed out of the desire to play loud, frenetic, fun rock’n’roll and the energy they project to the audience when playing is listed on WHO’s 10 Most Contagious Diseases. A toe-tappin’, head-boppin’, booty-shakin’ party is almost certainly guaranteed, unless, of course, you don’t have a pulse. While a lot of the influences are old-school classics, VFTV’s commitment to fucking ripping it up keeps the music sounding as fresh as ever, while some outsider influences keep the reins in check from just being “one-of-those” bands.

Consistently filling up bar rooms (even before covid), they are the self proclaimed ‘aural equivalent of a freight train mounted air-raid siren adorned with disco balls with thunderous drums, thick AF bass-lines, chunkier-than-thou guitar and melodic vocal wails’. With live music thrown into disarray in 2020, VFTV spent the downtime writing a bunch of new tunes, taking care of business (ie merch) and making video clips for the EP’s release.

After several shows around Brisbane, including a sold out show at Bearded Lady, Vibrations From The Void are playing a few select shows to celebrate the EP wherever they can to however many people can fit in a room.

GOD DAMN! TRACKLIST:
1 – Down With The Light On
2 – Coup de Grâce
3 – Resurrect My Mojo
4 – Blue Bird Yellow Moon
5 – Margarita Maria

BECKY RHODES FOLLOWS UP FROM DEBUT SINGLE WITH RELEASE OF “MISS ME YET?”

by the partae September 14, 2020
written by the partae

Following up from her debut single “He’s Not You”, Becky Rhodes is set to drop the second single, “Miss Me Yet?”, from her forthcoming EP Wonder. Hailing from  Brisbane, Becky completed a Bachelor of Music from the QLD Conservatorium of Music before relocating to Melbourne to further her career. Working as a musician, performer and vocalist on the Melbourne live music scene for the last few years, Becky is known for her powerhouse vocals & lively stage presence and works for some of Australia’s best entertainment agencies.

Two weeks prior to entering the studio to record her debut EP with Mark D’Angelo of The Backlot Studios, Becky had her relationship suddenly end. With no set idea on what material she’d be working on in the studio, this experience provided much of the inspiration for the new material. Displaying a sense of vulnerability in “He’s Not You”, the new single sees Becky take back the power with “Miss Me Yet?”, a track about regaining control over yourself. Becky explains, “A lot of the songs on the EP are about the sadness & heartbreak of ending a relationship but ‘Miss Me Yet’ isn’t one of them. This is a break up song about empowerment & feeling in control. To me, it’s a song about knowing your worth & if someone doesn’t want to be with you – they’re the one missing out. The song is a little bit sexy & a great mix of different genres: pop, rock, indie & country – and it just makes you feel good and want to have a bit of a boogie or a line dance.”

Becky has already had a charmed experience working within the music industry, travelling around Australia with various shows & bands and performing at The Sydney Opera House as a teenager. Now leading into the release of her debut EP, Becky reflects on what she wants listeners to gain from her songwriting. “Everyone has or will experience heartbreak from time to time. Whether that’s from a relationship or a friendship ending or losing a loved one – we can all relate to this theme. This EP has songs I wished I could have listened to during my own heartbreak. But it’s not all sad. There’s moments of happiness, reflection & moving on, so I want the listeners to be able to relate in their own way & mostly, enjoy my music.”

Perth champs Dennis Cometti will release their debut self-titled album on October 23 via Bargain Bin Records.  Dennis Cometti (The Band) deal in short, sharp rock warts n’ anthems about life in the world’s most remote city. SEASON 1 OVERVIEW

1. I Bet They Can’t Do It Live:
The band drifts from 10-year-old hyper-local Warrandyte soul band to sought-after buzz act by record labels around the world. They’ve got a debut album but no experience in the industry, no manager, no booking agent and the attention is building.

2. There Were Loads of Hurdles:
The band enter the throes of recording Run Home Slow in under 3 weeks with international producer Paul Butler. But from day one they’re on the ropes. Their performance has been the band’s backbone but in the studio they can’t play the songs. Even if they could play them the studio tape recorder’s broken. They’re losing precious days.

3. We Used Every Waking Hour:
The tension ratchets up amid band squabbles, personal life issues, painstaking analogue recording techniques and a looming deadline. There’s horns, strings, backing vocals and more that get cut from the studio sessions. Frustrations are building and someone is sent home.

4. Silence… But Everyone Was Yelling:
Mixing the album happens between Melbourne and Los Angeles, while mental health issues take their toll as the walls close in. At the start of 2019, the band and management don’t know exactly how they’re going to finish the album.

5. Conga Lines Out Into The Street:
The first single is ready to go then the Australian label Ivy League suggests a change.
Singles two and three come out while the band is in the US then the UK respectively, without Brendon. They’re booked to play youth festival Splendour in the Grass and there’s one plane that can get the band home.

6. And That’s What Happened With The Teskey Brothers:
Not just the album, released on 2 August 2019, but the Colors Session recorded in Germany too sends a Teskey wave around the world.
The band is booked to support Tash Sultana through the US before the Australian album tour at the biggest home-country venues they’ve ever played.
And the awards show they’ve watched since they were kids, the ARIAs, announces the 2019 nominations.

ETHAN P. FLYNN Releases B-Sides & Rarities Volume 1 Announces vinyl release out November 6th Shares new video ‘What You Do To Me’

by the partae September 14, 2020
written by the partae

Praise for Ethan P. Flynn

“An appealingly wayward and unboxable talent… It’s slightly nuts, but entirely wonderful.”  – SUNDAY TIMES

“Proves classic songwriting still has a place in the modern musical landscape” – SO YOUNG MAGAZINE

“A startlingly unique and assured collection of experimental pop writing” – GUARDIAN GUIDE

“A genius appears! The first hero of the 2020s!” – BIG LOVE RECORDS

London-based musician Ethan P. Flynn has released the expanded version of his debut album and career retrospective B-Sides & Rarities Volume 1 and has announced a vinyl release set for November 6th via Young Turks / Remote Control Records. Alongside the release, Flynn shares the third in a trio of singles from the record, ‘What You Do To Me’.

‘What You Do To Me’, is a further example of the kind of swirling, psychedelic lo-fi masterpieces Flynn conjures, and is set to build on the success of previous singles ‘Everybody’s Dying To Meet You‘ and ‘Are You Doing This To Hurt Me‘.  Flynn has amassed a huge cannon of songs over the last few years – often writing a song a day – and ‘What You Do To Me’ dates from 2017, written in student halls at London’s Guildhall college (a far cry from ‘Everybody’s Dying To Meet You’ which was written in Los Angeles while writing for FKA twigs’ acclaimed Magdalene album). Accompanied by a video shot between London and Dungeness by enigmatic young director Mark Harvest, it’s another startling statement from the young songwriter, beatmaker and multi-instrumentalist who has previously collaborated with the likes of Jeshi, TTY, Jockstrap, Vegyn, Slowthai, Celeste and Black County, New Road.

Originally released via Bandcamp, B-Sides & Rarities Volume 1 is an evolving body of work featuring a collection of songs recorded between 2015 and 2018.  Showcasing a deft songwriting flair and touching on musical inspirations that run the gamut from Sparklehorse to Madlib, Julia Holter to Danny Brown and Tom Waits, the collection first appeared on Bandcamp in 2019. The record’s next chapter saw Tokyo’s renowned Big Love Records pressing the album to vinyl at the start of 2020, exclaiming “A genius appears! The first hero of the 2020s!”. Now expanded to include four new songs – ‘Everybody’s Dying To Meet You’, ‘Are You Doing This To Hurt Me’, ‘What You Do To Me’ and ‘When I Taste The Pavement’  – it is available now digitally and will be released on vinyl on November 6th.

Phil Stack

by the partae September 14, 2020
written by the partae

Where are you currently based?

I’m now down the South end of Sydney I have lovely peaceful spot near a beautiful river here.

How did you first start playing music?

I formed my first band in 1989 in my garage. Soundgarden was all the rage.

What’s been happening recently and how has your Covid experience been so far?

It’s been a great chance to face my fears and tackle some time-consuming things like getting better at music production, using a computer while doing that more and writing for writing’s sake. I’ve also enjoyed seeing my 8-year-old daughter a great deal more as I’ve been in town (obviously !).

Your debut album ‘Colourful, Noisy’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

Many of these songs were written during the last few years of what was a turbulent, chaotic time in my life. I write as a cathartic experience and it helped me to get over that and give me something else to focus on. As far as the sound goes, I’m influenced and somewhat limited in a good way by the fact that until super recently I didn’t know how to record on a computer, couldn’t paste a loop together ! So these are ‘song songs’ written from a voice and piano and then layered with real instruments. It comes out sounding more modern, though, I think! Because I’ve had to figure out how to still get certain sounds that are in my head out, whilst still only using “real’ instruments. I’m also just a human who is influenced somewhat by all things, topics and energies from today in general, so of course it’s going to sound this way.

How did you go about writing the music?

Melody and chordal structure are the first things usually. Sitting down at the piano with merely a feeling and the drive to create is all I generally need. Often 80% of it comes in the first 10 minutes of this sit down.

I always have a notetaker recording. However, then it’s sometimes a case of transcribing what I just did, followed by agonising over the last 20% ! Often I take ages to actually commit to lyrics, a middle section (if needed) or whatnot. I’m getting better at not making this part such a chore and accepting what is. If I’m lucky, sometimes a spark or a melody even comes in a dream. Once I met David Bowie (in my dream !) at Bondi and he helped me write a few lyrics to something that had alluded me. How lucky.

Where and when did you record/produce?

Free Energy Device Studios in Camperdown with Richard Belkner has always been a great space to lay down tracks, especially bed rhythm takes. I did quite a bit in my new space too here and also some mixing with my old mate Sean Carey at Church St Studios in Camperdown who is great musician, mix engineer and producer in his own right.

What programs/instruments did you use?

It’s all built up from the piano and voice. Live drums (mostly Evan Mannell), double bass (my main instrument), electric bass. ’The Long Game’ has live strings on it. A fair bit of layered vocals. The album has sparse use of some vintage keyboards and minimal guitars.

You worked with your former Thirsty Merc bandmate Sean Carey who mixed the record, how did this come about and how was the experience?

I just reached out on a whim, I had a song (‘Share Your Dreams’) and had a thought, ‘you know who’d do a great job with this?”.

The song is written for my daughter and it’s almost like self-consciously I had to get Sean because he knows me, and it takes a certain type of delicacy. He’s such a connected, emotive guy, and not everyone who’s also a bad-ass mix engineer is like that. I then got him to mix 2 the tracks in a similar vein. I even ticked him into singing a little too. He has a delicious voice. He’s now in my live band too!

You’re playing Mary’s Underground on the 15th of October, what can we expect?

My hot new band! Evan Mannell, Harry Sutherland and Sean Carey. There is some instrument swapping. I’m going from basses to piano, and Sean from guitar to bass. Abby Dobson Is supporting which is really exciting for me. She has a voice and sound of an angel.

How do you prepare for live shows and what do you most enjoy about playing live?

I get way more nervous on my own shows than playing for way more people as a sideman with some else. The music is deeply personal. However I do enjoy the challenge of trying to cover the general layered feeling of the record with a live band.

How do you feel about playing during Covid and playing after nearly 6 months?

I feel great about it. I’ve done a few small things but this is really exciting to play this material with my band and let the rest of the world take care of itself for a night.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Cat Stevens.

What do you like to do away from music?

Be in the moment with my daughter.

Be in the moment with my partner.

Drink coffee, sit and be still.

What’s planned for 2020 going into 2021?

Writing the next thing and witnessing however that unfolds. There’s no time limit or stylistic restrictions on what this sounds like, so that’s exciting.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

I’m appreciating the inner city area a great deal more after not living there for a while.

Phil Stack’s debut album Colourful, Noisy is out now.

He plays 2 shows (early & late) at Mary’s Underground in Sydney on Thursday 15 October. Tickets are on sale now at moshtix.com.au
