RENOWNED COMPOSER DANNY ELFMAN ANNOUNCES NEW ALBUM ‘BIG MESS’ VIA ANTI- / EPITAPH HIS FIRST SOLO ALBUM IN THIRTY-SEVEN YEARS COMING OUT JUNE 11

After releasing a series of singles over the past few months, Danny Elfman is announcing his first solo album in thirty-seven years today, titled Big Mess.

Multimedia artist Sarah Sitkin created the video for Elfman’s new single release “True”:
watch it HERE.

A slow burning track, “True” faces down hopelessness and despair head on. Elfman’s vocals are gritty and growling here, and his raw unfiltered delivery only adds to the emotionally charged atmosphere. “The video is an exploration of fractured identity, muffled through the lens of memory,” Sitkin revealed. “Danny is a central figure within the video, yet only in his reproduced likeness via prosthetics, masks and 3d printed body parts. I wanted to make a video that was gritty, unpolished and uncomfortable.”

Clocking in at 18 tracks, the sprawling, ambitious double album finds the Grammy and Emmy Award-winning composer breaking bold new ground as both a writer and a performer, drawing on a dystopian palette of distorted electric guitars, industrial synthesisers and orchestra in an effort to exorcise the demons brought about by four years of creeping fascism and civil rot. He is joined on the album by drummer Josh Freese (Devo, Wheezer, The Vandals), bassist Stu Brooks (Dub Trio, Lady Gaga, Lauryn Hill), and guitarists Robin Finck (Nine Inch Nails, Guns N’ Roses) and Nili Brosh (Tony MacAlpine, Paul Gilbert).

Big Mess was almost entirely created spontaneously during quarantine in 2020. It began as an experiment Elfman had been considering which combined aggressive rock band and orchestral strings in a way that had not been heavily explored. “Once I began writing,” he explained, “It was like opening a Pandora’s box and I found I couldn’t stop. None of it was planned. I had no idea how many songs I would write but from the start it quickly became a 2-sided project with heavily contrasting and even conflicting tones.”

The songs on Big Mess combine both harmonically complex arrangements and simple high energy driving music with biting, acerbic wit as they reckon with the chaos and confusion of the modern world. “2020 was an intense year, to say the very least,” Elfman says. And while the anger, frustration, and isolation of it all is palpable in his delivery, Big Mess is about more than simply blowing off steam. In making the space to truly sit with his emotions and write without limitations, Elfman achieved a kind of artistic liberation on the record that had been eluding him for decades, rediscovering his voice and reinventing himself all at once in the process.

Elfman isn’t shy about using that voice to share his mind, either. Big Mess is an often explicitly political record— “Choose Your Side”, “Serious Ground” and “Sorry” all anchor themselves in the political intensity of our times. Even a reworked Oingo Boingo song, “Insects”, transforms itself into a meditation on the greed and sickness of the American ruling class—but Big Mess is also a deeply personal work, with songs like the droning “In Time”, the haunting “We Belong”,  and feverish “Everybody Loves You” revealing more of Danny Elfman than we’ve heard at any stage of his remarkably eclectic career.

“I knew from the start that this wasn’t going to be a neat, easy-to-categorise record,” says Elfman. “It was always destined to be this crazy cacophony, because that’s who I am. The Big Mess is me.”

The album artwork was also created by Sarah Sitkin from a series of 3-D body scans and designed and art directed by Berit Gwendolyn Gilma.

Elfman is also releasing a stunning, limited edition Big Mess box set this fall. This collector’s edition contains the full album along with unreleased remixes and alternate versions of songs. Additionally, the package will include collectable artwork, a unique USB with video content and bonus material, and an exclusive artbook featuring Sarah Sitkin’s original creations and never before seen photos and ephemera.  More details and information to come.

PRAISE FOR MAPLE GLIDER

“Hell of a song and hell of a tone”
Tommy Faith, triple j Unearthed

“Glider’s airy vocals float beautifully throughout the song,
with Iansek’s signature slow-burning and evocative production making for a stunning listen”

NME

“A piece that tries to unravel the intricacies of a religious upbringing and a relationship,
both of which kept her from being her true self”

Bob Boilen (NPR)

“As Tradition quivers with its intimacy,
drawing from the same deeply personal chord of Julia Jacklin and Angie McMahon,
albeit with nuances and touches that make it distinct to herself”

Pilerats

Today, after the universally enthusiastic reception of her first two singles, Maple Glider announces her debut LP To Enjoy is the Only Thing out June 25 via Pieater / Partisan Records, pre-order HERE. To accompany the album announcement, the third single ‘Swimming‘ is now out now, listen + watch HERE.

Zietsch says “this was meant to be a love song, but by the time I finished it, it kind of premeditated a break-up.” It’s set on the south coast of both France and the UK – strangely romantic locations to juxtapose falling out of love. Zietsch teamed up with creative collaborator Bridgette Winten for the music video, with whom she made captivating clips for ‘As Tradition‘ and ‘Good Thing‘. The video for ‘Swimming‘ was inspired by black and white horror films, for their ability to combine satire with emotionally evocative themes. Intimacy, estrangement, confusion, and loneliness are highlighted throughout the clip. Maple Glider’s romantic partner-in-crime – an inanimate skeleton.

To Enjoy is the Only Thing is an album full of brittle intimacies and effortlessly balanced instrumentation (not a note wasted). In the singer-songwriter tradition, the solo project of Tori Zietsch (‘peach’ with a z) is centered around the lyrics, exploring deeply personal themes and often serving as a self-catharsis. Over plucked acoustic guitar or deftly weighted piano chords, Maple Glider shares vignettes of her life; growing up in a restrictive religious household, falling in and out of love, interstate, and international relocations, the new perspectives travel can bring along with the alienation of being away from the familiar.

Maple Glider shares, “This is what the album looks like to me: walking past tinsel covered trees in mid-September, swimming along the calanques in the south of France, car-bonnet frost, darkness at 4pm, lightness until 10pm, a muted feeling, the perpetual grey fog that swallows the Silver Coast, the colour red, this ugly green dress, red wine, red blood, red lips, red is the colour of the cardinal’s robe, Switzerland, my mother’s diaries, a coroner’s report, the sun on my face, the end of love, “To enjoy is the only thing. BTCH$.”

Based in Brighton abroad in the UK was where Zietsch experienced heavy loneliness. But it was during this time that she entered a pool of self-reflection. She returned to Melbourne late 2019 with a SoundCloud literally full of demos. She enlisted Tom Iansek (Big Scary / #1 Dads / The Paper Kites / Hockey Dad / full credits HERE) to record, mix and produce the first batch of songs she was ready to get down. During the shared time spent at Pieater‘s studio BellBird with Iansek, the wider team got to fully appreciate the wonderful artistry and beauty of Maple Glider and welcomed her to the family.

Since its release mid-September, debut single ‘As Tradition‘ has had over 1 million streams (thanks largely to love from Apple Music’s editorial team), has been added to Double J, triple j Unearthed, FBi Radio, 2SER and Edge Radio, and was spun first by Bob Boilen on NPR’s All Songs Considered. In the months that followed, Maple Glider’s domestic label Pieater has joined forces with beloved indie imprint Partisan Records (Laura Marling, Cigarettes After Sex, Fontaines D.C.) for releasing her music to the rest of the world.

The first song they released together was ‘Good Thing‘. Garnering over 100K streams per week since its release, it was KUTX’s song of the day; shared by Matt Wilkinson on Apple Music 1, who said it “floored me”; Mystic Sons named Maple Glider as artist of the week; was featured by Uproxx, American Songwriter, Dork, Consequence of Sound, Brooklyn Vegan and many more; and it was added to triple j Unearthed who put an artist spotlight on Maple Glider.

‘Swimming‘ is out now, buy/stream it here.

INTRODUCING EYEDRESS AND HIS GLOBAL HIT ‘JEALOUS’

written by the partae

Eyedress is the alias of Filipino artist, now Los Angeles resident, Idris Vicuña.

Born in 1990 in the city of Makati, Philippines, Vicuña relocated to the US with his family at the age of 6. He was raised in Phoenix, Arizona before moving to San Clemente, California at the age of 13, where he started playing bass in punk bands.

In 2005, Vicuña moved back to Manila where he played in various bands, diving more into  the art of sampling and making loops. During this time Vicuña pursued his own solo project which would eventually become Eyedress.

Well received by music blogs, it led to him signing his first record deal with XL Recordings imprint Abeano. Later that year they released his EP “Supernatural” which saw praise from publications such as The Guardian and NME.

In 2017 Eyedress signed a deal with UK label Lex Records (Danger Mouse, Gnarls Barkley) which saw him re-locate back to Los Angeles.

In December of 2019 Eyedress released “Jealous”, the lead single from his 2020 album ‘Let’s Skip To The Wedding’. The track pairs heartbroken lyrics with a driving rhythm and infectious guitar, and highlights his unique ear for melody.

The music video was directed by BRVINFREEZE. The video features Eyedress busking in Venice Beach & skateboarding with Kane The Menace; a perfect fit for the upbeat single.

Watch the video for Jealous

Jealous’ is a global viral hit, with 100M+ on demand streams, 750k+ daily streams, over 1M TikTok videos with 750M+ views between them. It charted at #15 on Billboard’s Hot Rock and Alternative Songs chart, and led to Eyedress being named YouTube Music’s ‘Trending Artist on The Rise’ March 2021 and charting at #19 on Rolling Stone’s ‘Breakthrough 25’ chart featuring “the fastest rising stars of the month”, March 2021.

Highlights of the single
1.83M Spotify streams to date in Australia
152k Apple Streams to date in Australia
984k Youtube video views to date in Australia

Regarding the song, Eyedress stated: ““Jealous is a song I made about trying not to be possessive. It was also one of the first songs I recorded on my new Japanese Teisco guitar. I was really excited when I first made it because I haven’t had much time to just sit down and come up with a new riff, but that one came to me so easily. It was recorded in my bedroom in Silverlake and the video was filmed by BRVINFREEZE. We filmed on a nice sunny day in Venice beach; basically went out with my bandmate Zahara and skateboarder friend Kane The Menace and just filmed a bunch of clips of us skating around Venice beach along with shots of me and Zahara busking and performing the song live for passers-by.”

DJ GOMI: Kazuhiko Gomi MIKE:  Mike Ivy SARAH: Born Sarah Kate Sporleder and Sarah Mattea comes from my great great aunt Deensha Matthee who was a famous Opera singer in Czechoslovakia during the days of Vaudeville. I slightly changed the spelling and Mattea means “Gift of God” or “God’s Gift” in Hebrew.      How did you all three come together for this special collaboration?  Mike & Gomi had great success on previous collaborations together in recent years, and we all came together in 2019 to do “Touch” which was released on Toolroom Trax under Sarah's moniker Luv Junkie.  Mike & Gomi wanted Sarah to sing this new cool track they produced and of course, She was all in as a Sarah Mattea release instead of Luv Junkie for this one. What's been happening recently and how has your Covid experience been? SARAH: That’s a loaded question it’s been quite a year!  So much has happened for all of us.   It has certainly made it hard to get in the studio with everyone. Right now, it is all about building back our communities and making sure our loved ones stay safe. MIKE & GOMI:  It has been tough at times, working on music and taking things day by day. Many gigs have died down or basically disappeared with quarantine, but we do the best with what we have and stay creative at home or in the studio safely. As a collab the three of you have written the single 'What U Do' how did you all decide on the direction to take the songwriting? Mike & Gomi had this incredible track and we all got together for a writing session back in July 2020.  Sarah had these two song ideas on her voice notes that fit perfectly so we mashed those together and added some adlibs along with all the magic! What influenced the sound and songwriting? Sarah was in Ibiza when she wrote those two song ideas, giving Mike and Gomi the idea of taking that ibiza sound influence to the track and the melodies flowed perfectly.  How did you all go about writing What U Do? We were in Gomi’s studio just throwing around ideas to the track him and Mike created, and it was truly a group effort. Each of us have our creative forte’s and it really makes for a perfect production when we all come together. Where and when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with? Gomi’s studio and all the above were done by the three of us. How did the recording/production process take place? Mike & Gomi wanted a vocal on this track idea and I was excited to work with them again. What programs/equipment/instruments did you use? MIKE/GOMI: Logic Pro, UAD Apollo, Avalon compressor, Neumann microphone, some Roland gear, Korg M1, Fabfilter plugins, UAD plugins, and many other plugins, some drum samples from splice. What did you find most challenging and rewarding during the writing and recording/production process?   COVID made it a little challenging, but we put this together and recorded it in one night. Mike & Gomi spent some time on the production of course, but we always have a great time in the studio, laughing, sharing ideas and bouncing around our ideas. Will you all be working together in the future on more music?  Yes, Mike & Gomi already have a track that they are waiting on Sarah to get in the studio to put my vocals on for the next LUV JUNKIE project! Who are you listening to at the moment? GOMI: Bach, Mozart, Beethoven MIKE: I have an eclectic taste and variety of genres so just about everything depending on the mood. SARAH: I have a huge spectrum of styles that I like to listen to, so I toggle my Pandora between the top pop radio hits, old school R&B and house music stations. What do you like to do away from music? SARAH: Real estate career by day and love to coach young women in gymnastics and fitness.   I also give my time to local charities such as Sing for Hope and New York Cares. GOMI: Go to the gym and exercise. MIKE : Hanging with my family, watching movies, going out and spending time together.  What's planned for What U Do and the remainder of 2021? Purple Tea has some great plans for the release….. So play it loud and hopefully get some summer performances/gigs!  We certainly hope the fans love it, grab a copy and stream it on all platforms worldwide!  Favourite food and place to hangout? GOMI:Ramen shop- ICHIRAN in Brooklyn. MIKE:I’m a foodie so there’s too many to mention but I love Astoria and Williamsburg in NYC, where you have a great variety of cuisines. SARAH: SUSHI!  SugarFish in Union Square is one of my favorites but hanging out anywhere that’s outside right now perfect ha!  Long Island City boardwalk and Central Park are probably my favorite places now that it is warming up but cannot wait until the pool parties start back up or indoor venues so I can support all my DJ friends and dance my bum off! https://www.facebook.com/djgomi https://www.instagram.com/djgomi/ https://www.facebook.com/djmikeivy https://www.instagram.com/djmikeivy/ https://www.facebook.com/sarahmattea https://www.instagram.com/iamsarahmattea/

DJ GOMI, MIKE IVY & SARAH MATTEA – RELEASE ‘WHAT U DO’

by the partae April 13, 2021
written by the partae

Canada – Being Canadian, hockey plays a very important part in our lives obviously (Go Habs Go!). Nothing is prettier to watch than a star-studded first line, that has been at it together for a while. That skill, that chemistry, the timing. It’s a thing of beauty.

For those of you, probably most, that don’t know anything about our beautiful sport, you can think of it as Football (Soccer for us and our pals down south) on ice. Add 10 km/h and 80-100 lbs per player compared to Football. Give them carbon fiber sticks (twigs) that fire vulcanized rubber at speeds approaching 200 km/h, steel blades (wheels), a smaller field (rink), oh and body contact is not only allowed but actually encouraged. You got a problem with “buddy on the other team eh? Well ya drop the gloves and settle it in a good ol’ fashion donnybrook. Now that you have some bearings, lets talk shop.

In hockey you traditionally have 4 lines of 3 players, playing offence. Each line takes turns, or shifts, because hockey is played in short sprints at full speed. You have your fourth line which is usually compromised of goons and plugs. Guys and Gals that aren’t the most skilled, but are very hard working, won’t score much or even at all, but they take pride in not getting scored on and are good at that. They are the sandpaper on the team. The skill goes up until you reach the first line, your top line.

The House Music First Line

This is the get shit done line. Need a goal in overtime, line 1 get out there. We have assembled our version of a house music first line.

DJ Gomi: House Music Veteran

Down the middle, we have DJ Gomi. Center is arguably the most important position in hockey, that or goaltending, but that’s for another writeup. Centers need to play smarter and harder, they need to be able to see the puck better than anyone, they dictate the offense, but also have to be able to collapse back on defense quicker than their two other wingers. DJ Gomi, is a veteran of the house music sport. An absolute legend in the music industry period. Having played his college house music at powerhouse Berklee, and having influences by none other than Quincy Jones. The discography alone is enough to make you understand this guy is business. Having produced, programmed, written, remixed for the likes of Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, Beyonce, Janet Jackson, Madonna, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Rupaul, oh and our very own national treasure Celine Dion (big hockey fan). What about house music? Oh no biggie there just worked with the likes of Satoshi Tomiie, Junior Vasquez, Kenny Dope, and label regular and fellow first liner Mike Ivy.

Mike Ivy: Power Forward, Power House

This brings us to left-wing, Mike Ivy. Mike needs no introduction to those of you who have been following the label or the house scene. Following his monstrous release with us “Get On”. He’s been a man on a mission. What hasn’t this man accomplished in our industry? With releases on Toolroom Trax, Flashmob, and Nervous just to cite a few, this natural power forward gets in front of the net to open up scoring opportunities for his fellow line-mates. Mike is what we like to refer to as a natural goal scorer. That’s a lot of muscle so far, every first line needs some finesse, some speed, and passing.

Sarah Mattea: Soul Speedster

Enter right wing, Sarah Mattea. This wingers speed up and down the boards give this line the balance that final, devastating blow that leads opposing lines in the dust. With appearances on top of Billboard, this vocalists sultry voice gives to tracks a sexy edge, her hooks get burnt into your brain. Her voice is a weapon and she knows it.

What U do – NYC Trio

Now we know more about this dynamic trio, this all NYC hookup, gives us this instant classic. With beefy drums that swing to the absolutely gorgeous vocals, that bounce around the hypnotic house music chord progression. You can almost feel and hear each artists contribution to this belter, a feat that can sometimes be lost in transition.

Coming to a rink Near you…

This first line is coming to score some goals in clubs, living rooms, cars near you. I would suggest you grab a copy now, to review the film, if not they might just leave you in the dust as they have many times in the past.

Anthemic pop made for the big stage, Rotterdam’s Lulleaux provides the X factor with US vibes supplier Aukoustics and American singer-songwriter Anna Graceman, whose Southern-styled twang comes through a dazzling array of synths destined for the limelight. The mood divided between late night beach party, being beamed up to a higher level and a grand finale of EDM and tropical house, ‘Stars in My Eyes’ bids to become a prize playlist pick.

“Six years ago, having taught myself to produce music in the summer, I made my first real attempt at uploading a track”, Lulleaux recalls. “It was a bootleg of a track by Anna, which gained lots of support by Kygo and Robin Schulz – the ball definitely started rolling from that point on. Six years later and now I’ve a new record with Anna – ‘Stars In My Eyes’ is the icing on the cake”.

The pilot of the multi-million streamed ‘Contact’ and something of a collaborative specialist, Lulleaux has consistently caused a chain reaction with releases on Be Yourself, Spinnin’ and Hexagon. His impact extending to collaborations with artists in the likes of Sam Feldt, and remixes of Tiësto and Benni Benassi.

Another knowing all about huge streaming numbers, Boston’s Aukoustics can also call himself a connoisseur of collaborations, notably adding his expertise to the Galantis & Dolly Parton track “Faith (feat. Mr. Probz)”, as well as putting his own spin on Frank Sinatra’s standard “Fly Me to the Moon”. Rappers NLE Choppa, Bhad Bhabie and Kash Doll have also come in for the American’s A-game production touch.

Influenced by Adele, Amy Winehouse and Heart’s Ann Wilson, Nashville-based singer-songwriter, instrumentalist and label owner Anna Graceman is no stranger to the spotlight, seen by millions on national television through appearances on The Ellen Show, America’s Got Talent and Songland (appearing alongside Bebe Rexha), and holding down Las Vegas residencies in rubbing shoulders with The Lumineers, Kacey Musgraves and Beck. The chemistry behind ‘Stars in My Eyes’ has already been proven – Lulleaux’s mid-00s remix of Graceman’s ‘Words’ has amassed over two and a half million streams to date.

SARAH: Born Sarah Kate Sporleder and Sarah Mattea comes from my great great aunt Deensha Matthee who was a famous Opera singer in Czechoslovakia during the days of Vaudeville. I slightly changed the spelling and Mattea means “Gift of God” or “God’s Gift” in Hebrew.

How did you all three come together for this special collaboration?

Mike & Gomi had great success on previous collaborations together in recent years, and we all came together in 2019 to do “Touch” which was released on Toolroom Trax under Sarah’s moniker Luv Junkie.  Mike & Gomi wanted Sarah to sing this new cool track they produced and of course, She was all in as a Sarah Mattea release instead of Luv Junkie for this one.

What’s been happening recently and how has your Covid experience been?

SARAH: That’s a loaded question it’s been quite a year!  So much has happened for all of us.   It has certainly made it hard to get in the studio with everyone. Right now, it is all about building back our communities and making sure our loved ones stay safe.

MIKE & GOMI:  It has been tough at times, working on music and taking things day by day. Many gigs have died down or basically disappeared with quarantine, but we do the best with what we have and stay creative at home or in the studio safely.

As a collab the three of you have written the single ‘What U Do’ how did you all decide on the direction to take the songwriting?

GOMI: Bach, Mozart, Beethoven

MIKE: I have an eclectic taste and variety of genres so just about everything depending on the mood.

What’s planned for What U Do and the remainder of 2021?

QUENTYN ‘ENROUTE’

by the partae April 12, 2021
written by the partae

International DJ and producer Quentyn finally drops his euphoric and beautiful debut album after 4 years in the making; ‘Enroute’. Featuring multiple already released gems, the album contains various new tracks released worldwide April 9th.’Enroute’ is a collection of single releases dating back to 2017, with three new tracks added to the record;

‘Walls’, ‘Rebirth’ and ‘Hold You Now’. All pieces centre around Quentyn’s masterful production skills and feature an array of vocal talent including frequent collaborator Josha Daniel. Focusing on melodic tracks, there is a range of genres with often live instrumentation, showing Quentyn’s move from huge club tunes to a more refined and live sound. ‘Rebirth’ and ‘Hold You Now’ display the transformation in sound, the former merges guitar-solo with pulsing bass and percussion and the latter leads with rock drums, but it doesn’t stop ‘Walls’ from taking us on a progressive house journey.

“With this album I want to explore new genres, but most importantly make music from the heart without making any concessions,” explains Quentyn. Pushing a less club-centred sound, he’s “always seeking a melody that contains a perfect balanced mix of all the different emotions I’m looking for – all in one ‘loop.’”

Quentyn, real name Quirijn Smits, is certainly no stranger to the industry, having achieved huge success as half of the progressive house duo Volt & State, climbing the charts with hits such as ‘Sandcastles’ and ‘Warriors’. Now, five successful years later, Smits runs his own label, Enroute Records and frequently releases tracks of established talent as well as his own tunes. Backed by huge artists in the industry such as Axwell, Martin Garrix and Nicky Romero, you can count on Quentyn to get your head bobbing and heart racing with both club-bangers and radio friendly sounds. Enroute and Quentyn are set to push the boundaries of electronic music, while filling up dancefloors globally once it is finally safe to do so. “Enroute” is set for release April 9th via Enroute Records.

JERRICA ALYSSA

by the partae April 12, 2021
written by the partae

Where are you currently based?

Nashville.

How did you first start playing music?

As a Filipina Canadian growing up in Vancouver, I was so lucky to have my loving, large extended family singing and dancing, at every turn.  My Lola (grandma) played and taught piano and encouraged me to take lessons..and to practice!

What’s been happening recently?

Like so many artist’s when we talk about our current releases that are out, our head is deep in the new songs we are writing.  Isn’t that the way with everybody?

You have a new EP on the way, what’s the title?

“Feelin New” It reflects a feeling we all seem to want to feel, after all of the isolation and sadness of our pandemic 2020 year.

What influenced the sound and songwriting?

The inspiration is usually right in front of me every morning I wake up.  Great artists like Prince, Diana Ross & Michael Jackson inspire me constantly and releases that just dropped by my living idols (Alicia Keys, Bruno Mars & Pink Sweat$) getting me going as well.  We can’t forget to mention brand new beginners who arrive with a hot new sound.  The way I feel about inspiration is that we are all so very lucky to be living in a time with the media hitting us from all sides. It’s everywhere, not just on the radio, newspapers and magazines like old school.

How did you go about writing the music?

Most of my songs start with a progression or groove I have in mind.  On occasion I hit up a fellow keyboard player friend in Vancouver, Jonny Tobin, for a co-write to the changes, but so far the songs come together in my writing studio.  I always have a topic in mind before I start: it can be from feelings I need to air, issues in life I want to resolve or jams we all get ourselves into.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with?

We record and mix in Nashville, my production partner is Joseph Magee, my mastering engineer is Rob Burrell. And wow, there are so many great players in town, seriously the best in the world.

How did you approach the recording process?

I come in with my song ideas in a fully laid out Pro Tools session.  We then start with working lead vocals right away.  This helps us build the arrangement. Then we make a groove dependent choice; we either go out to a commercial studio for rhythm section basics or bring those players to our own studio.  After basics are done, we refine the arrangement, sometimes over and over.  I end up doing several keyboard over dubs and then we start final vocals/harmonies.  Once we are happy, my partner looks at some final sonic sweetening and we head into the final mix.

I understand you were a touring Polynesian dancer as a kid.  How does this influence your songwriting and production?

I’m a groove machine after all of those years dancing.  The rhythm has got to feel right, no matter how simple the song is.

You come from a Filipino family in Vancouver, please tell us about how that affected your start in music:

The stereotypical jokes are spot on; lots of karaoke and dancing at home and family gatherings.  There was no shortage of opportunities to get up and perform.  Plus Earth, Wind and Fire, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston and every variety of funk played in our house.  Let’s not forget, ballads, ballads and more ballads.

I heard that you have BS degree in Genetics when you were fresh out of high school.  How does your scientific mind impact your production work?

Hehe, when I have time I learn new software, pretty darn quick. Pro Tools, Final Cut Pro, Photoshop, Lightroom, plugins, etc.

You balance songwriting, playing multiple instruments and producing as well as all of your visual production.  Your music sounds and looks great, in what order and when did you learn to do all of these jobs?

First, I got the encouragement to come to Nashville on my playing and singer/songwriting potential. Once I arrived, I learned producer chops by first contributing to my own songs, then taking on a more responsible role.  Second, I really have to thank some pros in Nashville for encouraging me to express myself, not to hold me to their opinions on how my music should be.  Third, my own recording projects led to invites to work on other artist’s tracks. To sum it up, I just gotta say if you want to learn your craft, it helps to learn from people with years and years of experience.

In terms of the visual part of the job, so many of us have been learning quickly, how to get video and still content out to the world.  With technology so available, hardware and software, it’s a situation of why not?  And if you need to learn a skill let’s say in Lightroom…just go get it on YouTube.  How exciting is that??  I love the visual part, it’s my jam.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Anderson .Paak and Bruno Mars, Silk Sonic.

What do you like to do away from music?

Two things, I design costumes for Halloween and sneak away to teach Zumba classes on occasion.  You can’t take the dancer out of me.

What’s planned for 2021?

I’m very excited for my EP release on April 23rd!  In addition to the EP,  I’m also releasing a music video for the title track “Feelin’ New” on April 14th. The concept for the “Feelin New” music video, is my dance persona and our recent world-wide, online video community inspired her choices. The result is a high energy, community cast of dancers and people with “good feels,” guaranteed to inspire all of us to sport a new smile and feel the groove; a welcome remedy for all we have lived through this last year.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

Fav food is sushi, fav hangout is a dance floor in an R&B Soul club where everybody moves!

R3HAB & Andy Grammer Reunite for Emotive Fusion of Dance and Pop for Their New Track “Close To You”

Artists: R3HAB & Andy Grammer
Title: Close To You
Label: CYB3RPVNK

Download / Stream

Dream team R3HAB and Andy Grammer reunite and team up once again for their new release “Close To You,” which follows their first single together “Good Example” from 2020. After releasing “Stars Align” with Chinese best-selling female artist Jolin Tsai and a future festival anthem “Distant Memory” with Timmy Trumpet and W&W, R3HAB shows off a more radio-friendly style with melodies of organic instrumentals and an easy rhythm, which is complemented by Grammer‘s soulful vocals. With lyrics that touch upon feeling connected to someone despite time or space, “Close To You” has an emotive element that serves as a reminder of why Grammer‘s songs like “Don’t Give Up On Me” and “Honey, I’m Good” have made him a favorite artist among millions of listeners. Check out what both artists had to say about their exciting new collaboration “Close To You“:

“When I want to make a next-level feel-good record, I call Andy. He has a bright outlook of the world and channels it into inspiring songs. We loved working on ‘Good Example‘ and have been looking for the right follow-up ever since. Andy shared a demo of ‘Close To You,’ and we were able to bring it to life quickly. I’m excited for the world to hear this song and dance along.” – R3HAB

“When you are with your person, and there is an uncanny feeling that it was meant to be. That’s what I was thinking when writing ‘Close To You.” – Andy Grammer

Dutch/Moroccan DJ and producer Fadil El Ghoul, better known as R3HAB, has been trailblazing his way through dance music for the better part of the last decade. From his breakthrough hit remix of Afrojack, Pitbull and Ne-Yo‘s “Give Me Everything” to his dance anthems, such as “All Around The World (La La La)” and “Lullaby,” which have collectively amassed over 600M streams, to his collaborations with the likes of ZAYN, Andy Grammer, Sofia Carson, Olivia Holt and more, R3HAB has proven to be one of the most talented and forward-thinking artists in the game. He partnered with Spotify and GATTÜSO to create the first-ever official “mint” single release. In 2016 he founded his label CYB3RPVNK, which passed one billion streams on its catalog within the first two years since its inception. R3HAB himself continues to evolve and diversify his sound by working with a variety of artists around the globe, experimenting with everything from hip-hop to pop through his collaborations. With his combination of innate artistry and innovative attitude, in 2021 R3HAB is continuing his journey among electronic music’s elite.

Since his self-titled debut, award-winning multi-platinum artist and songwriter Andy Grammer has been inspiring listeners around the world. Andy has scored seven chart-topping hits, which together have been streamed over a billion times worldwide—including his first break-out songs “Keep Your Head Up” and its follow-up “Fine By Me.” His 2014 sophomore album, Magazines or Novels, went gold and yielded the gold single “Good To Be Alive (Hallelujah).” During this chapter, the single “Honey, I’m Good” reached quadruple-platinum status globally, emerging as “one of the best-selling songs of that year.” He maintained this streak on 2017’s The Good Parts. The standout song “Fresh Eyes” achieved platinum status and reached over 350 million streams. In addition to reaching fans through his music, Andy also makes a strong connection through live shows as he consistently sold-out headline gigs on his 2018 and 2019 tours. Building upon that foundation, his 2019 fourth full-length, Naive, amplifies both his message and musicianship. The first single “Don’t Give Up On Me,” was also highlighted in the critically acclaimed film  Five Feet Apart. The song went on to be certified platinum and now has an impressive 350M global streams to date. It was also used in a campaign for ESPN‘s 13th annual V Week for Cancer Research, entitled “One,” which landed Grammer a Sports Emmy for Outstanding Music Direction and a Clio Award. Throughout the last year, Grammer spent a majority of his time in the studio working on new music that will be released this Spring. His new song “Close To You” with R3HAB is the first of many exciting things Grammer has in store for 2021.

Praise for Ex-Olympian

2SER Feature Album

“He has hit his stride” – The Age / Sydney Morning Herald (Mikey Cahill)

“a wonderful introduction to the world of “Dream Funk”” – AU Review

“The vintage disco-infused production sounds so effortless, which is quite funny because when you start to really listen it’s pretty apparent that a lot of work has gone into making it sound so breezy. That’s without doubt one of the marks of a great artist.” – Double J

“You’ll get lost in the music of Ex-Olympian” – Mixdown Mag

Afterlife Remixed is a fresh take on Ex-Olympian’s 2020 debut Afterlife, calling on some friends, favourite musicians & DJs to rework some of their favourite songs on the record – giving them an Afterlife of their own. Afterlife Remixed is out now via Dot Dash / Remote Control Records.

The original record itself was influenced by themes of starting again, trial & error, renewal and dialogue. Liam McGorry aka Ex-Olympian says: “In this way, I thought it would be interesting to extend that dialogue and ask those same friends to reinterpret the works they have helped inspire in the first place”.

Featuring reworks by the College of Knowledge, GL, Alice Ivy, Katarzyna Wiktorski, Penny Dub, Pepito and Mike Gurrieri, it slides across the musical spectrum from jazz to soul, acid house and funk from song to song.

Alice Ivy, on her rework of ‘Voices In My Head‘: “Afterlife was one of my favourite records of 2020, I’m honoured that I was asked to remix ‘Voices In My Head’. The original mix had so much emotion to it, I wanted to tap into that energy in a more dancier way. Liam and I have shared a studio for a couple of years and he has contributed to a whole bunch of Alice songs with his horn playing,  so this one was extra special to me!  Thank you Ex-Olympian for trusting me with it!”

The first single from the EP was a College of Knowledge rework of the stunning ‘Lilac Youth’. Channelling the spirit of David Axelrod himself, College flip the original in a long-form funky meditation, like only they can… featuring some lyrical Farfisa melodies, intricate guitar lines and soulful Hohner D6 clavinet.

The work’s second taste, Penny In The Well (feat. Sam Lawrence), gets the Jarrad Brown treatment as Penny Dub. Jarrad & Liam have shared a special bond as friends since meeting while recording for Jarrad’s band Eagle and the Worm, continuing as housemates, and collaborating together in Dorsal Fins. The rework itself is equal parts Sly & Robbie and Stereolab, taking the effervescent original and transforming it into a downtempo after-hours affair.

Jarrad says: “As with many of Liam’s projects- I’ve been at the intersection of enjoying Liam’s record as a fan + also watching & being part of the making of it. Afterlife captures Liam shifting between personal creative expression and the collaboration of his community around him. My remix meets Liam’s sounds as a fan, through the lens of the community within Afterlife.

Ex-Olympian is the new musical vessel for Liam McGorry – songwriter & musician for bands such as Saskwatch and Dorsal Fins. Named after the neon sign that adorns ‘Borsari’s Corner’ in Melbourne’s Lygon St, Ex-Olympian reflects the times we all need to shift things forward into a new phase. His debut record Afterlife saw McGorry received additions across Double J and national community radio play from 2SER, RRR, FBi, PBS, 4ZZZ and RTR.

“Sickeningly good”

“Spreading chaos in all directions and scorching the earth in its wake,
Behind You just summed up the 2020 mood with caustic energy in under 3 minutes”

Dave Ruby Howe, triple j Unearthed (4 stars)

“To be extremely clear, this song is really good”
Sound Doctrine

Introducing local electronic punks Behind You with their new song ‘Burning‘ accompanied by an enthralling self-directed video. Written during the peak of crisis, ‘Burning‘ is an anthem for the end times. Listen HERE, watch HERE.

The group of Frank Fisher (vocals), Joe Goddard (production) and Dylan Clay (percussion), Behind You present the sonic amalgam of free-genre connoisseurs black midi, Show Me The Body’s hardcore roots, with the aplomb of MC Ride and Royal Headache’s Shogun.

Frenetic, impulsive, and fully charged, Behind You present another joyride through space and restraint on ‘Burning‘. Toms and fills on the verge of bursting, vocals a breath away from feeling winded, a stop-start beat that keeps you guessing – ‘Burning‘s 3-minute chug is a gut-punch. Their biggest inspirations: depravity, vertigo, and spoken word that rewards upon repeated listen. Unpredictable and considered, ‘Burning‘ blends their mutual love for The Drones, Death Grips and Black Country, New Road, to create their own take on industrial hip hop and hardcore.

Of the video, the band share, “For the video, we returned to some of the bushland around where we grew up. It felt like there was something prophetic or tragic about staging an act of narcissism in these places which might not exist in 100 years. Watching the footage back we realised there was this irony about it which made the extravagance of the track feel like a farce – screaming into a cheap camera while bushwalkers pass by – so we leaned into that during the edit.”

Based out of Sydney’s Inner West, Behind You began as a duo in 2017 and released a slew of singles and EPs, performing to small crowds in dark venues around the city. Things changed in 2020 with the entrance of their live percussionist, and the release of their last single ‘More Like Fresh‘ turned heads, drawing praise from the likes of triple j Unearthed and FBi Radio’s Independent Artist of the Week.

Behind You stand as one of Australia’s most exciting experimental bands right now, stay tuned for more.

‘Burning‘ is out now, buy/stream it here.

ONSLOW UNVEIL COLOSSAL DEBUT SINGLE ‘LET ME RUST’

SUPPORT FOR ‘LET ME RUST’

“It felt like the band had reached through the radio gripped me by the collar. Heavyweight alt rock with the emotion in overdrive.” – 4/5 stars
Dave Ruby Howe – triple j Unearthed (AUS)

“A grungey alt-rock banger that’s going to wow fans and showcase a different musical side to these two musicians!“
Wall of Sound (AUS)

Premiered on triple j’s Short.Fast.Loud w/ Josh Merriel

Perth-based melodic-punk group Onslow have just revealed their titanic debut single ‘Let Me Rust’ – produced and mixed by Matthew Templeman (Make Them Suffer, Voyager, Statues).

Opening with poignant guitar chords, ‘Let Me Rust’ vigorously bursts with potent drums and driven distorted riffs, before the melancholic vocals of Sean Harmanis guide the track dynamically through quiet verses and compelling choruses. Emotionally charged hooks lead into an entrancing bridge, where colourful harmonies then pave the way for a monumental finale to bring the song to its abrupt ending.

Harmanis talks about the process behind ‘Let Me Rust’:

“This tune was probably the main catalyst for starting the band in general. To me, the song is about feeling as if you’re going to waste. At the time, I was struggling to find purpose and felt as if I very had little direction in my life. Between Make Them Suffer tours I felt an increasing sense of isolation and separation from my friends and normal life at home. This led to some unhealthy habits. The lyrics ‘Let me rust. Drink me empty. Turn to dust, slow and steady’ are about the vicious and unhealthy cycle I felt I had fallen into and the increasing sense of isolation that paired with my reclusivity. Musically, I tried not to think about it too much. I just see each section as a bite-sized moment from my favourite bands of my early adolescence. They come together to form the alt-rock Frankenstein that the song is.”

Onslow consists of hardcore-scene behemoths Sean Harmanis (Make Them Suffer), and Scott Kay (Voyager, Statues, Absent Heart). Expanding from their roots, the two musicians confidently show their ability to blend heavier music elements with angst-fuelled punk lyricism, taking cues from Deftones, and The Smashing Pumpkins.

‘Let Me Rust’ is available worldwide now

Groove City

written by the partae
What is your name and role within Groove City?

Hiya! I’m Cal and I’m the singer & songwriter.

Where are you currently based?

We just moved back home from Melbourne to Sydney.

How did Groove city form?
I’d taken about 6 months off music, licking my wounds from the break up of my turbulent first band, Thunderthief.
Dan and I had been spending a lot of time together forming our friendship via funk nights out listening to all our favourite music and dancing the night away.

That’s when I knew I was ready again. One evening not soon after I called Dan asking if he wanted to start a disco duo and before I could finish my pitch he cut me off mid sentence telling me to “shut up already, I’m IN” and promptly hung up on me.

What’s been happening recently?

We just played our homecoming show, Moonlanding, at The Factory Theatre with our new 3 part horn section, The Hornshank Redemption.

Your new track ‘Making Love On The Moon’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?
Mayer Hawthorne has been an influence since we formed, but particularly recently with his latest singles album. It’s full of beefed up nods to 70s/80s yacht rock and pocket groove. That’s where we want to take our sound.

As per usual, love inspired the songwriting. This time, it’s from a new found love and where it could go.

How did you go about writing Making Love On The Moon?

It usually starts with my acoustic and I spending some time together. I write the chords, vocal melody, lyrics and structure and then take the first draft to the boys. We plug in and from there.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with?

We’ve had a home studio for the last 3 years. This was the last track we recorded in our studio during lockdown in melbourne last October. It’s also the first song of ours that we recorded, produced and master completely ourselves.

How did you approach the recording process?

We usually record a draft vocal and guitar and then build each instrument layer by layer. Multiple times as each roles part becomes more developed.

You’ve played massive sold out Headline shows as well as playing other great acts being Confidence Man, Client Liaison and Flight Facilities to name a few, how do you prepare for live shows and what do you most enjoy about playing live?
Our live shows involve a whole team these days. Most nights are spent playing the set over and over and then working with our wonderful lighting wizard, Lachie, on cues and colours.

The best part about playing live is the crowd. Seeing people singing along to our songs and having their own connection to those lyrics and dancing free of any worry is something truly special and I cherish that.

You’ve also had massive success on Spotify and Tik Tok, how has social media impacted Groove City?
Our South Yarra train station performance of Gold Chevvy really made people feel something during lockdown last year, huh?

Social Media really forced us to think outside the box while stuck at home last year. Our best is yet to come.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Always listening to Steely Dan, Toto and Whitney Houston but I’ve actually been listening to Ben Folds Five most recently!

What do you like to do away from music?

Pretend I’m Larry Bird winning his third consecutive 3 point competition.

What’s planned for 2021?

Finishing up a couple more singles, a live tour, a disco concept album and launching another project ‘Hot Glass’.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

Mary’s Newtown.

MICRA RELEASE TWO-TRACKER ‘UNDERCOVER LOVER’ AND ‘I SHOULDN’T HAVE LISTENED’

Today, Sydney-based rising dream-pop duo Micra – Ivana Kafedjiyska and Robbie Cain – share their dynamic two-tracker ‘Undercover Lover’ and ‘I Shouldn’t Have Listened’.

A cathartic track with swelling synths, engrossing bass and compelling production, ‘Undercover Lover’ explores the process of surrendering:

“There are some people in your life that go under the radar or your circumstances don’t allow you to fully connect. This song is about when all the bullshit is done and you can just let your guard down to be with someone who’s been under your nose the whole time.”

‘Undercover Lover’s’ intoxicating slow-burn is boldly juxtaposed against the rockier ‘I Shouldn’t Have Listened’. With an energetic beat and memorable hooks, the synergy between the duo’s intuitive production and complex songwriting makes room for the track’s unexpected twists and turns. As Micra explain, the song’s intensity comes from emotional pain:
“Letting other people’s thoughts dictate your actions never ends in satisfaction, yet we still do it all the time. Sometimes this can be a little different in the case of chasing after someone. Other people can see the situation clearly when you are not able to. This song is about a time when indecision and external influences led to a whole lot of hurt.”
The two-tracker is a neat follow-up to Micra’s previous single ‘Sonata’, a hypnotic track which strengthened their position in the dream-pop landscape and saw extensive support from indie-tastemakers globally including David Dean Burkhart, as well as major playlisting across DSPs. ‘Sonata’ was also playlisted by TikTok on release.

During a tumultuous 2020, Micra kept busy by releasing a steady flow of singles with accompanying DIY live videos, finishing the year off with a breezy, hypnotic cover of Ou Est Le Swimming Pool’s hit ‘Dance The Way I Feel’. Previous single ‘Coral Crush’ explored a more pop-centric side to the duo and was coined by Pilerats as “a masterclass in the excellence Micra has consistently shown us over the last few years”. Whilst earlier release ‘Under My Skin’ was named Clash Music’s ‘Track of the Day’ and was added to RUFUS DU SOL’s ‘Headphone Selections’ playlist.

A sonic experiment from Bulgarian born and raised singer/ guitarist Ivana Kafedjiyska and Australian guitarist/producer Robbie Cain, the duo performed a flurry of impressive, sold-out shows at Sydney’s Oxford Art Factory and La La La’s in Wollongong in November last year. Micra will perform at Pressure Fest in Sydney on April 24.
