New York musician and producer Spencer Miles Abraham Allen, the brains behind Spencer., has announced details of his debut album and shares a first taste of new music today, via 4AD / Remote Control Records.

Released on 10 September, the eleven songs that comprise Are U Down? blend R&B, hip-hop, funk, indie, pop, jazz and soul to create a sound that encompasses analogue and digital, past and present. Written, recorded and produced by Spencer., the album’s first single ‘Lonely As I Ever Was’ is available now “’Lonely As I Ever Was’ was the last song I wrote for my record, I even made the outro the same day. The theme of this one is basically from the song ‘Next Lifetime’ by Erykah Badu, and I even reference it in the lyrics. Kinda like being on the other side of her situation, begging someone in a relationship to consider a relationship with you.”

Born and raised in Rochester, NY, to chemist parents who presciently gifted him the middle name Miles (for Miles Davis), a career in music beckoned from an early age with 4-year-old Spencer. lobbying his Jamaican mother and British father for trumpet lessons in tribute to his namesake. Rochester’s rich and underappreciated creative scene nurtured his musical skills, and he won a place on a summer jazz programme at the city’s prestigious Eastman School of Music in his teens. A self-taught producer who has always recorded in isolation, he started self-releasing home recordings in 2018, and eventually dropped out of college when his EP Want U Back became a word-of-mouth hit.

Now transplanted to the Brooklyn neighbourhood of Bed Stuy, itself a fertile ground for creative enterprise, Spencer. is a main player in a tightknit and supportive creative community that also boasts Clairo, Snail Mail, Claud, Advisry, Binki, Cautious Clay and Triathlon amongst its burgeoning talent.

Written and recorded during the pandemic, Are U Down? is about the struggle of a relationship and a sense of longing cuts through its 11 tracks. Featuring 4AD labelmate Becky and the Birds (vocals on ‘After The Show’), Luke Diamond (guitars) and Jake Aron (some additional production), Spencer. has integrated neo-soul vocal fireworks, hip-hop flow and pop ambition into an album steeped in all the feels of a New York summer.

Are U Down? is released digitally on 10 September 2021. Physical formats will follow in 2022.

Where are you currently based?

Melbourne, Australia 🙂

How did you first start playing music?

When I was 5 I started singing in a choir! I started playing professionally at 15 by pretending I was 18 and getting into bars.

What’s been happening recently and how has your Covid experience been so far?

I just released my new single “Can’t Do Anything Right” and I have some huge things happening in August you should keep an eye out for. Covid has been a roller coaster for many artists but I’ve persevered staying positive and active, I released a full EP called Normality in 2020, another single “Welcome” in 2021, a film clip and sold out my show at Howler.

Your new single ‘Cant Do Anything Right’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

I was frustrated! I felt like I couldn’t do anything right for myself or live up to everyone else expectations even though I was trying my hardest. It sort of just came out in 5 minutes.

How did you go about writing ‘Can’t Do Anything Right’?

I vocal looped it, did some pretty harmonies, a beat and a heavy simple bass line then I just started singing how I felt; “I can’t do anything right, trying my best, help me if I look left or I need my rest”. Then I added some instruments to thicken it up this time.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who with?

I wrote the song at home in my room, on my looper after receiving an email I was frustrated at in about April and recorded it in May, produced it Michael Cooper and Mastered it Nicholas Di Lorenzo, Panorama Mastering.

How did you approach the recording process?

I always have my own demos, phone recordings and all my ideas stored in my looper, then I smash it all out in the studio and add the cherries on top with extra layering or effects.

You’re playing Chapel Off Chapel on the 31 of July, how do you prepare for shows and what can we expect?

Yes I am! I will be looping, might play some guitar, I will also have some friends joining me on stage.

Who will you be playing with?

I will be solo with my looper and special guests.

What do you like to do away from music?

I’m pretty music obsessed, but I love a red wine over dinner or exercising.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Fresh Finds Australia and New Zealand playlist on Spotify because Spotify just added “Can’t Do Anything Right” to that Spotify playlist!

What’s planned for the remainder of 2021?

Can’t say too much yet but SO much, keep an eye out as you won’t be missing it. Expect an album in 2022.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

Shujinko Ramen, Russell Street, Melbourne

East Coast Rock Band Andre Pettipas and The Giants to Release New Album No Fools No Fun on July 9

A Who’s Who of Rock ‘n’ Roll Production Talent Lend Their Expertise To The Project

Toronto, ON – East Coast Rock BandAndre Pettipas and the Giants are set to release their new album No Fools No Fun on July 9 via all streaming platforms. The 13-track album captures the no holds barred, kick-ass ethic the band brings to everything they do, and like never before.

Recorded at the The Chalet Recording Studio in Uxbridge, Ontario, 10 of the 13 tracks were produced by Brian Moncarz (Alice Cooper, Our Lady Peace, The Tea Party), along with some other well-known rock n roll heavy hitters including: Max Kerman of Arkells(Saint John String Quartet) who arranged “Dark Times”, John-Angus MacDonald of The Trews (Glorious Sons) producer of “Sympathy Card”, and Jason Jenkyns (The Stanfields, The Town Heroes) and Jon Landry (The Stanfields, The Town Heroes) who co-produced “The Swedish Motel”.

“Everyone has enough pain and anguish taking up residence in their minds at any given time. For us, it’s like, let’s just forget about all of that for a while and have a good time.’ That’s what we do at our shows and that’s the approach we took to this album,” said lead vocalist Andre Pettipas.

The first released single off the new album “Sympathy Card”, gained ground at Rock radio reaching #27 on Billboard’s Active Rock Chart in Canada and breaking the top 50 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Chart in North America. The song is a damn the torpedoes, full steam ahead track emphasizing shrugging off adversity and not wasting time complaining about what you can’t change, but always making an effort to change what you can. In contrast, the singles “The Swedish Motel” and “Overtime” display the band’s ability to combine vastly disparate genres of rock and roll into a sound that’s undeniably and uniquely their own.

The album will also include the most recently released single “Homesick”, giving a major nod to late eighties and early nineties rock featuring Christopher Thorn the guitarist of critically acclaimed, chart topping, southern psych-rock band Blind Melon. Other standout tracks include “Last First Date Ever”, “Gone”, and “No Fools No Fun” – the perfect soundtrack to chase away the ongoing pandemic blues.

The Nova Scotia natives are already on the rise to fame with three #1 singles on nationally syndicated show, “East Coast Countdown” and showcasing internationally at Live at Heart/Sweden. They were also named Arkells: Leather Jacket Cover Contest Winner, were Casino NS Artist in Residence Finalists from 2016-2018, Q104 Homegrown Champions out of 120 bands (15k in prizes including the recording of our industry demo which led to the band working with Brian Moncarz), and Jim Beam National Talent Search Regional Winners (Halifax).

With their take no prisoners; live performances, stellar musicianship, and habit of finding grist for the songwriting mill in everything from southern rock to hip-hop and pop to prog, Andre Pettipas and The Giants are a rarity – an act who absolutely refuse to let anything take the fun out of their creative process and performances on record or on stage, and with absolutely no fear of stepping outside of the box to get their message across.

POET AND MUSICIAN MOOR MOTHER ANNOUNCES NEW ALBUM ‘BLACK ENCYCLOPEDIA OF THE AIR’

“Like a blossom emerging from between the floorboards of a slaughterhouse, Moor Mother’s music is an act of transcending a violent, intolerable present.” – The Fader

Today Moor Mother – aka Camae Ayewa – is announcing her new album ‘Black Encylcopedia Of The Air’, thirteen mesmerising tracks about memory and imprinting and the future, all of them wafting through untouched space like the ghostly cinders of a world on fire, unbound and uncharted, vast and stretching across the universe.

On the new single “Obsidian”, Moor Mother says the song is about present danger – “thinking about one’s proximity to violence. Thinking about violence in the home. Violence in communities.” Featuring rapper Pink Siifu.

Listen and watch the song’s new video HERE

Director Ari Marcopoulous added, “We decided to start the video in front of Alice and John Coltrane’s house. Nuff said. I could elaborate if you want me to. But it’s the spirit right there.”

Recorded at home in March 2020 at the start of the pandemic, ‘Black Encyclopedia Of The Air’ is the work of Moor Mother and soundscape artist and producer Olof Melander. As with any Moor Mother release, a multitude of instruments and voices flocked to the ether to create something strange and unknown, a time-traveler’s guide to the modern world.

Ayewa is also a vocalist in three collaborative performance groups: Irreversible Entanglements, MoorJewelry and 700bliss. Most recently, Ayewa put out BRASS, a collaboration with the rapper billy woods. She has previously worked with woods on his critically acclaimed 2020 album Shrines and on the song “Furies,” which was featured on the Adult Swim single series. Ayewa is also a Pew Fellow (2017), a The Kitchen Inaugural Emerging Artist Awardee (2017), a Leeway Transformation Awardee, a Blade of Grass Fellow as part of Black Quantum Futurism (2016), and Rad Girls Philly Artist of the Year (2017).

Last month Moor Mother shared the track “Zami”, a track named after the book by influential black and queer author Audre Lorde. “Voice booming through buzzsaw synthesisers, Moor Mother heralds the utter destruction of the oppressive present on “Zami,” kicking open the door to a future free of the tyranny of ordered time,” Pitchfork said in a review of the track. Liberating herself from time with a cosmic urgency, listen and watch the song’s video HERE.

TINY LITTLE HOUSES ANNOUNCE SECOND ALBUM MISERICORDE – OUT 19 NOV + NEW SINGLE ‘SMARTEST GUY’ OUT NOW

by the partae July 7, 2021
written by the partae

Ivy League Records is incredibly proud to announce Tiny Little Houses’ long-awaited second album, Misericorde, will be released on Friday 19 November! Produced and mixed by long-time collaborator Steven Schram, the Melbourne-based quartet present a collection of fuzzed out yet intricate indie rock songs, through which singer, guitarist and chief songwriter Caleb Karvountzis lays his interior life bare and takes an unflinching look at the world around him, pulling no punches in the process. Misericorde will be released on digital, CD, limited edition light blue transparent vinyl & limited merch bundles and is available to pre-order now.

To coincide with the album announce, the band have released their new single ‘Smartest Guy’, described by Karvountzis as “an ode to foot in mouth disease”, turning the lens on himself & taking the piss out of his need to always have the last word. “It’s constantly getting me in trouble with people, but I just always have to have my little say and it’s not always a good thing,” he laughs. Watch the crooner-themed video below, complete with their signature TLH charm, starring Caleb and directed by Mike Ridley.

WATCH: ‘Smartest Guy’ by Tiny Little Houses

Tiny Little Houses have also announced new dates for their sold-out headline shows. Originally due to happen tonight, the band’s Sydney show at the Lansdowne will now take place on Wed 4 August, while their Melbourne show moved to Wed 14 July.

On their second record, Misericorde, Tiny Little Houses search for salvation through suffering.

“The idea behind the title is the only way to save yourself is through suffering,” says Karvountzis. “The misericorde, which was a knife used to deal the death blow to wounded knights, becomes this mercy that releases you from pain and suffering. It’s this concept that the suffering is good but also the ending of that suffering is good.”

It wouldn’t be a Tiny Little Houses release if it didn’t bristle with a heartfelt intensity and Misericorde is no exception.  Written in a period where Karvountzis was testing himself with cold showers and long stretches of fasting – “Just trying to be like a monk and find myself and some peace again,” he says – don’t expect a re-run of the themes that preoccupied the band’s much-loved debut, Idiot Proverbs. This time around, Caleb and his bandmates – guitarist Sean Mullins, drummer Clancy Bond and bassist Al Yamin – have bigger fish to fry.

Recorded in three, five-day sessions at Melbourne’s Sing Sing studios – considerably different to the log cabin where they recorded Idiot Proverbs – it was the first time the band had spent so long making an album and it allowed them the mental space to create the kind of expansive record they’d envisioned. Taking that extra time, while also challenging and trusting each other, has paid off in spades across all the album’s 13 tracks. Misericorde is the sound of a band throwing everything in their collective arsenal at a record, unafraid to push their sound into new territory.

“a startling debut”
British Vogue (Feature)

“박혜진 Park Hye Jin’s second solo release demonstrates her confidence to create free from the confines of categorisation”
NME (4/5 “How can I” Review)

“[Hye Jin] filters [her] experiences into a dreamy, cosmopolitan style that touches on house, techno, and footwork without ever settling down”
Stereogum (“The 40 Best New Bands Of 2020”)

박혜진 Park Hye Jin has today announced her highly-anticipated debut album Before I Die, set for release on September 10 on Ninja Tune. The album – entirely written, produced and performed by the South Korean-born and now LA-based producer, rapper, singer, and DJ – follows the release of her hugely successful How can I EP and comes on the heels of a string of collaborations, working with the likes of Clams Casino & Take A Daytrip (‘Y DON’T U‘), Blood Orange (‘CALL ME (Freestyle)‘) and Nosaj Thing (‘CLOUDS‘), plus a remix from Galcher Lustwerk (‘Can you‘).

Available today is lead single and opening track ‘Let’s Sing Let’s Dance’, a wistful dance track that places Hye Jin’s mantra-like vocals over piano keys and rumbling bass. Elsewhere on the record, she continues to expand her sonic palette, drawing on a range of influences that take in electronic, rap/hip-hop and downtempo sensibilities to present the most complete vision yet of her sound.

Her debut album follows an incredible few years for the young artist, with a string of releases that have seen her garner strong support from the likes of Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, FADER, DAZED, i-D, E!, Resident Advisor, Hypebeast, Purple Sneakers, STACK Magazine and many more. She was additionally featured in numerous ‘Best Of 2020’ lists from Billboard, The Guardian, NYLON and others, included in the NME 100 list of ‘Essential emerging artists for 2021’ & V Mag‘s ‘Generation V’ series, and highlighted by British GQ and Stereogum as ‘One to Watch’. The EP’s lead single, ’Like this’ – hailed by Mixmag as one of the “best tracks of 2020” and featured on the FIFA 2021 soundtrack – was supported across BBC Radio 1 and 6 Music (where it was playlisted for multiple weeks) with plays from Annie Mac, Clara Amfo, Lauren Laverne, Phil Taggart and many more. In the US the track was #1 of ‘Top Electronic’ in the NACC Charts (North American College and Community Radio), and in the ‘Top 200’ overall, with further support from KEXP, KCRW, SiriusXMU and more.

VANCOUVER SINGER-SONGWRITER LARISSA TANDY FINDS INSPIRATION IN UNEXPECTED PLACES ON NEW SINGLE 'DRIVE’
Music News

VANCOUVER SINGER-SONGWRITER LARISSA TANDY FINDS INSPIRATION IN UNEXPECTED PLACES ON NEW SINGLE ‘DRIVE’

by the partae July 7, 2021
written by the partae

Vancouver musician Larissa Tandy discovered that songwriting inspiration can come from the most unexpected places when she was writing her new single ‘Drive’, out today on all digital streaming platforms.

“I wrote ‘Drive’ in East Nashville with my friend, Texan songwriter Van Darien,” says Larissa. “Another friend had set us up to write together, and this was the first day we met. I sat in Van’s living room tuning my guitar, and she brought me an iced coffee to which she had added coconut flavoured La Croix. I was so confused and fascinated by it, I was taken with it! The moment felt almost psychedelic. And when my mind finally came back to the room we were sitting in, Van was playing a C chord and singing the word ‘drive’ over it. I asked her, ‘where is she driving?’ and the song started to unfold. While we were writing it, I was imagining Roy Orbison singing it, because I love him and I’m always trying to write for the way he sings.”

‘Drive’ follows the release of ‘Sirens’ (released on May 21st) and is the 2nd of 3 new singles to be released from Larissa Tandy this summer. The next single, ‘No Fun’, comes out on July 30th.

From her humble beginnings in rural Australia, raising herself on stolen Aretha and Patti Smith records, Larissa has mined her difficult life for potent stories and spun them into songs that made their way onto radio in America, the UK, and Canada. Within a few short years, she has doggedly beat a path for herself, touring relentlessly across Canada, Australia, and the US, and playing official showcases at Kansas City’s Folk Alliance, and Nashville’s Americanafest. Her debut album, The Grip, was released in 2017 and spent 4 months on the US Americana charts, reached #2 on the Canadian college radio chart, and attracted praise from almost every corner of the globe. Awards followed, namely the prestigious Nashville Songwriter Residency, which Tandy used to carve out a place for herself in Nashville’s competitive writing scene. Tapped by artists for her tough affect and muscular writing, she jagged a number of cuts in her first year in the game, which secured chart positions in Australia and the UK.

Larissa Tandy‘s new single ‘Drive’ is available now on Spotify, Apple Music/iTunes, and other digital retailers and streaming services worldwide. For more info, please visit larissatandy.com

Nigel Young ‘Treefall Plaza’ Premiere

by the partae July 6, 2021
written by the partae

Nigel Young’s background is as storied as his music. Attendance at university was followed by character building forays into the blue collar world of truck driving, the high stakes world of bong sales and even an ill advised stint in the army. In 2018 Nigel moved to Vancouver to join the psych rock outfit The Intelligence Service led by Alex P. Concurrent with this Nigel played a string of sessions until he formed the psychedelic garage rock group RAG with Mila Krajina in 2019.

Since then he has played in a number of bands such as Apathy Spells, Fez Monkeys, and Spank Williams. Nigel started recording his debut solo album in 2019 and released it in April 2020. Immediately following that Nigel started collaborating with Eric J Brietenbach, of The Spot Sessions and completed the album “…” with Eric which came out summer 2020. This has been followed with Nigel’s second solo album entitled Frog Hound which started recording in late August 2020 and is slated for release July 2021.

Where are you currently based? I am usually in between LA and Sydney but with the travel restrictions I am based in Sydney, Australia for the time being  How did you first start playing music? I’ve always loved to sing! I remember my first time singing in front of my family was when I was 8 years old at my sisters birthday party  What's been happening recently and how has your Covid experience been? When Covid really started to get serious I was in LA, and had to rush home to make it in time just before the lockdown. I was meant to be back in LA after just a few weeks but haven’t been back for over a year and a half now. At first it was really hard to adjust to the shift in environment. Being in LA it is really non-stop, and being home especially with lockdown it was super slow.  A lot of my projects were pushed back because everything planned in LA couldn’t go through, (shooting visuals etc). So I really took the time to meet with the creatives here in Sydney and find people I enjoy working with. I learned a lot more about engineering my own vocals, and about directing. The good thing is that with technology I am still able to work closely with my team in LA. Its been really fun diving into different parts of the industry that ultimately have helped me grow into a better artist!  Your new single 'Trap House' is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting? I love telling stories, and really finding melodies that carry the emotion of the lyrics I am singing to it. That is always my priority!  As for the inspiration behind the story, being in this industry can be very tricky. Theres a lot of smokey mirrors and blurred lines. I was offered a deal whilst in LA that seemed amazing but something didn’t feel right. I was back home in Sydney when I had to make a decision. As I was reflecting on my journey so far, the inspiration just hit. All those feelings of fear, chaos and belief started to write the song for me. The lyrics reminded me to trust myself. So I said no.  Where and when did you record/produce/master and who with? The song was just living in my notebook, until I was in LA again a few months later. I was singing at a live music venue when I caught the attention of My guy Mars. He mentioned that he wanted to work with me. So we went to his studio and I showed him the song I had written called “Trap house”. He instantly loved it & agreed to produce the record for me.  How did you approach the recording/production process? Being in the studio with mars was really mind blowing. Watching him in his element just create with so much passion and ease was insane. He had the first demo done within an hour session. I had a few elements I still wanted to add so we had another session working together and finalising the production. Once that was done we went to Sound Factory Studios, and I worked with Austen Lux chandler on the vocal production. He was great to work with and really helped to get the best vocal performance & he created some awesome harmonies too!  How did the concept for the music video come about? While searching for someone in Sydney to direct the music video, I was so lucky to come across Connor O Connor. She is a genius. From the first time meeting her I knew she was the right woman for the job. We had a few conversations about the meaning behind the song & the story. We worked very closely throughout the entire process but it was really important to me that she had creative freedom. She had created the concept, and the creative direction for every scene.  Where did you film and who did you work with? We filmed the video at D1 Studios in Marrickville, Sydney.  Connor O’ Connor (Director) put together the entire team / crew.  What did you find most rewarding and challenging whilst creating the film clip? It was very challenging organising the shoot with the covid 19 rules changing weekly. We wanted to make sure everyone was safe & that we followed all the rules correctly.  The most rewarding part was being able to play the video to my family.  Who are you listening to at the moment? I am always listening to different music, I can never narrow it down to one artist haha.  What do you like to do away from music? I love hanging out with my family !  What's planned for 2021? My plan is to just keep releasing music, keep making music ! Favourite food and place to hangout? My families restaurant Villaggio for both!  ( I promise my dad didn’t make me say that) haha  https://www.tiktok.com/@itsjazzyk https://www.facebook.com/jazzykofficial/ https://www.youtube.com/user/jasminekmusiic/videos https://www.instagram.com/itsjazzyk/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2fZAWrNHg1k

Its been really fun diving into different parts of the industry that ultimately have helped me grow into a better artist!

Your new single ‘Trap House’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

What’s planned for 2021?

My plan is to just keep releasing music, keep making music !

Favourite food and place to hangout?

My families restaurant Villaggio for both!

( I promise my dad didn’t make me say that) haha

Owen Westlake – ‘So Much Love’ (Jess Bays Remix)
Out Now

Owen Westlake is already well on the way to becoming an established hit maker, the London based producer and DJ has now sensationally and some could argue randomly propelled into the spotlight by of British football’s biggest names, Steven Gerrard.

After his 2016 track ‘So Much Love’ appeared on a viral video posted by Rangers F.C. manager Steven Gerrard, sound tracking his journey into the stadium to celebrate the win. Alongside earning himself a place in Rangers’ footballing folklore, Owen’s track was been picked up for re-release by FFRR Music and now receives a remix from rising star and standout artist Jess Bays, which is out now.

Brought back into consciousness, ‘So Much Love’ held #1 on UK Spotify Viral Chart for 4 weeks and is currently #35 in the Shazam chart, as well as making gains in the iTunes Dance Chart and being added to many playlists. In addition, Owen’s original has so far picked up an incredible 6 Million streams to date, as the track is set to soundtrack the summer. With the record now showing its true potential, Owen Westlake shares his hidden gem with the world.

Rising star Jess Bays steps forward for a remix of ‘So Much Love’, the artist hotly tipped for a breakthrough year has over the last 12 months showcased her passion, ambition and dedication. With releases on labels such as Stress Records, Armada and Good Company, Jess is breathing new life into the deeper sounds of house music, with support coming from the likes of BBC Radio 1 and BBC Introducing, as well as Kiss and Capital Dance. Her remix offers a deeper side to ‘So Much Love’, stripped back and groove driven she retains the vocals for the perfect pool party anthem.

Owen Westlake has been immersed in music all his life, from early inspirations such as Bob Dylan, The Beatles and The Red Hot Chilli Pepper to his electronic music influences coming in the form of Massive Attack and The Chemical Brothers. Winning a Beatport competition for a remix of trance legend Tiesto, brought him his first success as an electronic music producer, the same remix also appeared on an episode of US TV drama Grey’s Anatomy.

Fast forward to 2016, Owen has released two records ‘What I’m Gonna Do’ and ‘So Much Love’, both of the piano driven tracks picking up support from Radio 1 DJ’s Annie Mac and Danny Howard. Now sensationally, ‘So Much Love’ has re-emerged, thanks to a viral video from football star Steven Gerrard. As Gerrard drove into Rangers home ground, Ibrox he was met by thousands of adorning fans to celebrate their monumental title win. Playing through Gerrard’s car stereo that day, was Westlake’s track and unbeknown to him the track had caught the attention of the world.

Snavs Combines Grime and Future Bass Sounds in Emotionally Inspired New Track “Moods.” Out Now on Dim Mak

Artists: Snavs
Title: Moods
Label: Dim Mak Records
Release date: July 02, 2021

Download / Stream

Danish artist Snavs is nothing but relentlessly unique in his artistic expression, and his new track “Moods” on Steve Aoki‘s Dim Mak Records is no different. In an unusual fusion of grime and future bass music, the track is distinctly divided into two different sounds to represent Snavs‘s inspiration: the idea that our moods can easily oscillate based on circumstances in our everyday lives. Opening with splitting synths and grimy drops, “Moods” takes a turn to the future bass side with and back again, taking the listener on an emotional rollercoaster throughout its entirety. Snavs has previously released on Monstercat, Lowly, Big Beat/Atlantic, Musical Freedom, and Spinnin’. Read more on his inspiration for this standout track below:

“The whole idea around ‘Moods‘ is about reflecting on how fast your mood can change if something good or bad happens and how easily you can be affected by your surroundings. That’s why the mood of the track changes halfway through, and the first half is a grimey dubstep banger while the second half has more of a melodic and future bass vibe to it.” – Snavs

As the boss of his own label Riotville Records, DJ and producer Snavs has made it his mission to constantly push creative boundaries. He has explored the sonic realms through unusual collaborations that break genre barriers, including hardcore metal band Telos, legendary Scandinavian rocker Ulf Scott, Søren Buhl of alt-rock band Blaue Blume, and indie singer Karen Lassen. His music has taken him to some of the world’s most prestigious clubs, including Webster Hall (New York), Avalon (Los Angeles), Bootshaus (Cologne), WOMB (Tokyo), Pacha (Sydney), as well as well-known festivals such as Coachella, Tomorrowland, EDC Las Vegas, Eurosonic, Miami Music Week, Amsterdam Dance Event and more.

BAN MICAH

by the partae July 2, 2021
written by the partae

Hi Ban! The vibe of the track is dope – were there any specific sonic influences you were vibing with when making this track?

YOOO TY MY G and yes WAP was definitely a huge influence, I think both conciously and subconsciously. That track was everywhere at the time so you know you couldn’t escape it, therefore I felt like I wanted to make something that would just bang from top to tail you know?

All of your material is pretty groove and rhythm-heavy, where does your love for production and this sort of music come from?

Damn I think it all really stems from spending alot of time listening to soundcloud back.

when it first started like 2014 or something. There were so many “backyard producers”  and “cloud rappers” like Flume, WhatsoNot, Lido, Major Lazer, Chance the rapper, Yung Lean, Spooky Black, Asap Rocky?!?! who were just posting certified banger after banger. Alot of that early soundcloud vibe is what keeps me making music and evolving I feel. Big shoutout to my homie Hatch for putting me onto soundcloud and for teaching me how to use Ableton. Honestly if you get a chance check out @hatchbeats on ig mans is a G

What makes a song like Anime Eyes the perfect jam to get to know you through?

Content wise this track isn’t deep enough to get to completely know me through BUT it is a decent introduction, and it hopefully pushes first time listeners to check out the rest of my

catalogue and really get a feel for who I am and what my music is.

Can you tell us a bit about what’s coming next for you this year?

Ofcourse! I’m working on a lot of new music and have a couple really dope colabs, from some hella dope local acts to some awesome international artists. I’m also looking to drop a couple more singles this year too, after that I’d say an ep than an album. My homie and I are talking about starting up a podcast too, you know, whole lotta unpopular opinions and hot takes on Music/Anime/Movies etc. So look forward to that too at some point.

How crucial has songwriting been for you through lockdown?

It’s been everything honestly, I’d say if I didn’t have this “gift” through the whole of 2020/21 I might of gone mad. I would’ve spent the whole time playing ps4, watching anime getting fat(ter), worrying about how I’m gonna pay the rent and feeling sorry for myself. Without getting too deep, being able to write songs and make beats and put those out into the world whilst being locked down has been UBER crucial.

Have you discovered any new artists or music that you can’t stop listening to atm?

Hmmm yeah actually I recently watched Eurovision 2021 and there was this artist from Iceland, Dađi Freyr been bumping his tracks alot, other than him I’ve been jamming alot of Brent Faiyaz, ¿Teo?, Emefbnx an aussie rapper/producer from Syd absolute heaters from him and Reggie Banks an

aussie producer from Sans Souci where I grew up dudes such a G shoutout to him. Oh and I’ve had ‘The Off-Season’ on repeat since it dropped.

Written collectively as King Brown  Tell us a bit about the genesis of this EP - when did writing begin and how do you think it stacks up in terms of the band's song writing now you can look at it as a full record? Out in the Desert is a showcase of our collective songwriting spanning from our beginnings up to the time of release. The opening track Moto has been with the band for a long time, whereas tracks like Matter of Time and Oyzo were written specifically for the EP.  The EP is our musical offering showcasing the band’s creative range both of songwriting and our sonic palette. The songs each have their own distinctive sounds but still meld together throughout the record to form the King Brown sound. Are there any particular songs on there that still stand out as favourites for you (and why)? Moto stands out for its sheer energy and power. The song has been with us a long time but still is a favourite for both us and for audiences when we play it. It tends to charge the crowd up when we let it loose live. That feeling is also heavily present throughout the song thematically too, hitting the open road and letting it rip.  Way Down also stands out, it’s been really popular and is super fun to perform. The song was waiting in the wings for a long time, not quite pieced together. It is amazing seeing it released and people enjoying it. We were able to fill in the pieces and put a bow on it with the extra time that the first lock down gave us.  How has the last year been for the band; how crucial has music been for you during the weirdness of 2020? Our music has given us a sense of direction and purpose during COVID. While it’s been tough for the music scene we used that time to work on getting this record together. The shows we have been able to play were amazing because you really get to appreciate them and not take them for granted. It’s also been good in a sense for the whole WA scene, people didn’t have the option to see east coast acts so they discovered all these great local bands, it’s grown the whole scene. Can you tell us a bit about the band's current creative and sonic influences? How have they changed? We each bring our different musical influences with us to King Brown. At the start our songs had a more surfy vibe which has now progressed to show more of a rock and blues influence. The different influences show in each of our instruments, creating our unique sound. Our musical influences within the band range from acts like Oasis, CCR, Skegss, and Allah-Las, however the influences that reflect through to our music would be Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, Stevie Ray Vaughan, ...etc. What did you learn about yourselves as musicians during the writing and recording of this EP? We learnt that we have the ability and skills to get a lot of things done ourselves. Ben has put in a lot of time and effort recording the EP, without that we probably wouldn’t have been able to get it done. Shaun has been instrumental in creating all of the artistic elements and graphic design for the band, and also filming and editing our music video for Way Down. We have also learnt that as a band we can rely on each other to bring whatever is needed for our music. One of us can bring in a song or an idea and everyone adds their piece to make a unique collective creation.  In terms of live performing, what's exciting you the most about eventually being able to tour a record like this? We are really excited about getting the chance to play our new music that people have heard and become familiar with. It makes it that bit more special when you perform a song and the crowd engages with it so much more because they know it.  It’s a great thing when people react to us playing a certain song or shouting out requests for songs. It is the payoff of a lot of our time and effort spent making this EP. What's coming up for King Brown for the rest of the year, that's getting you pumped? Our next main goal is to release an album. We are excited to get stuck in to challenging ourselves to write and record a lot of new material for people to experience. Each one of us will bring our own ideas to the group, and from that a King Brown album will be made. That is a pretty amazing concept.
