ALLDAY JOINS SNØW ON ‘SPILLED MY COFFEE’ FT. RXSEBOY AND JACK CULLEN

PRAISE FOR ‘SPILLED MY COFFEE’

New Names
Annie Mac (BBC Radio 1)

“The [original] song, which is a smash, has been flipped and turned into a Beck,
[The] Dust Brothers-ie G. Love [&] Special Sauce-type
instant vintage folk throwback, with some dusty drums”

Zane Lowe (Apple Music 1)

“You know when those small little things in life strike, and you feel personally victimised by them,
like it would only happen to you, but the reality of it is it’s just a small minor inconvenience
that happens to every single one of us? This track makes those tiny little crisis moments and
frees them, and takes away the momentary rage”

Jack Saunders (BBC Radio 1)

Today, viral breakout hit ‘Spilled My Coffee‘ receives a newfound boost as Australian rapper Allday joins Snøw, Rxseboy and Jack Cullen for a fresh take on their latest single. LISTEN HERE.

Amassing over one million streams across platforms and backed by heavyweight tastemakers including Zane Lowe, Annie Mac and Jack Saunders, ‘Spilled My Coffee‘ has already reached cult status, with Allday‘s added feature now tipping it into a whole new stratosphere. Contrasting the deep, bluesy vocals from Jack Cullen with the dynamic raps of Rxseboy and Allday, the melodic hooks float over a dusty acoustic guitar riff and a bed of hypnotic, low-slung grooves whose snug, intimate appeal has proved one of the most viral of 2021 so far.

Snøw‘s relentless innovation in crafting slyly addictive lo-fi gems has garnered him a growing fan base across international audiences, recently featuring on Kina‘s Platinum-certified record Get You To The Moon. The precocious songwriter continues to establish himself as an artist crafting trailblazing hits with each perfectly executed release. Introducing Allday to the mix is yet another example of his shrewd and carefully considered execution, linking the Australian star up with British crooner Cullen and Powfu collaborator Rxseboy to create a formidable triple threat, each artist bringing their own distinctive flavour to Snøw‘s bedroom pop eden, the range of the collaborative effort never overshadowing ‘Spilled My Coffee‘s core cozy appeal.

Over four studio full-lengths and countless collaborations to date, Allday has carved out a space completely of his own within the Australian hip hop landscape, recognised for his dreamy, nostalgic aesthetics and his artistic versatility, honing an unmatched blend of indie and hip hop influences and an ability to switch seamlessly between soft, ruminative vocals and rap flows, most recently deployed on his Drinking With My Smoking Friends LP, which won swift praise from the likes of Rolling Stone, Clash, NME and was named triple j’s Feature Album. With Allday in tow, Snøw now adds the final piece to his ‘Spilled My Coffee‘ puzzle, keeping the heat high on his unassuming anthem, which, continuing to reach new audiences and constantly finding new life within itself, feels like it’s rapidly approaching a tipping point.

‘Spilled My Coffee ft. Allday, Rxseboy, Jack Cullen‘ is out now,
buy/stream it here.

Brisbane’s Jacinta Lal makes her arrival with debut EP, DIVYA

by the partae July 16, 2021
written by the partae

Following on from the release of her single ‘Self-Discover’, Brisbane hip hop artist Jacinta Lal unleashes her debut collection of material in the DIVYA EP.

The record is an intensely personal one for the young artist: not only is the title part of her name, but its meaning (‘divine’) is one that Jacinta has expanded upon through the music to become synonymous with feminine power and courage.

The EP came together across sessions with engineers Harry Fox and James Angus in Jacinta’s hometown of Brisbane. The six tracks on the DIVYA record capture different elements of Jacinta’s artistry and personal energy – great snapshots of the creative wave she was riding at the time of writing.

Previous singles ‘Self-Discover’, ‘Sheila’ and ‘Personal’ exude the confidence she naturally brings to the mic, while songs like ‘Funky Fierce’ and ‘M.V.P’ have seen Jacinta pour stacks of personality and biting style into each bar.

“To me, DIVYA are the ones who dare to show the world their true colours. DIVYA are the ambitious who fiercely go after their dreams. DIVYA are the strong-hearted. This does not mean they are not vulnerable. To me, DIVYA are the soulful who have been mocked and have felt pain. Lots of it. But DIVYA are the stubborn ones who get up over and over again despite being knocked over every single time before.”
Jacinta Lal

Accompanying the release of the EP, Jacinta shares new visuals for DIVYA track ‘Sheila’. As she says about this song, released near the end of 2020, ‘Sheila’ is for ‘the feisty and courageous boss queens out there.

“The ‘Sheila’ music video brings to life the character of a woman confident in her own skin. Expressed in some parts through dancing, the music video portrays the character ‘Sheila’ to be having a good time being proud of who she is.”
Jacinta Lal

CHVRCHES RELEASE NEW SINGLE ‘GOOD GIRLS’ FROM FORTHCOMING ALBUM SCREEN VIOLENCE, OUT 27 AUGUST

CHVRCHES’ new single ‘Good Girls’ is out now – listen HERE

Premiered as Annie Mac’s Hottest Record on BBC Radio 1

CHVRCHES are playing Splendour XR next weekend

The new album Screen Violence is out 27 August

Today, CHVRCHES have shared their new single ‘Good Girls’, taken from their forthcoming fourth studio album Screen Violence, set for release on August 27. ‘Good Girls’ premiered as Annie Mac’s Hottest Record on BBC Radio 1.

Watch the video for ‘Good Girls’
‘Good Girls’ was the second song the band wrote for the new album, setting the lyrical tone for Screen Violence. Frontwoman Lauren Mayberry’s powerful vocal delivers the unapologetic and vital lyrics on the misogynistic ideals inflicted upon women with urgency: “Good girls don’t cry / And good girls don’t lie / And good girls justify but I don’t / Good girls don’t die / And good girls stay alive / And good girls satisfy but I won’t”.

“The opening line (killing your idols is a chore) was something I wrote after listening to some friends arguing about the present day implications of loving certain problematic male artists – I was struck by the lengths that people would go to in order to excuse their heroes and how that was so juxtaposed to my own experiences in the world. Women have to constantly justify their right to exist and negotiate for their own space. We’re told that bad things don’t happen to Good Girls. That if you curate yourself to fit the ideal – keep yourself small and safe and acceptable – you will be alright, and it’s just not f**king true.”

The video for ‘Good Girls’ is the final in a lo-fi, nostalgic, and analogue-inspired trilogy directed by multi-disciplinary artist Scott Kiernan, following previous singles ‘He Said She Said’ and ‘How Not To Drown’. On the making of the trilogy of videos, director Scott Kiernan says: “The video for ‘He Said She Said’ dealt with doubt in making of one’s own image while under the manipulation of another; while ‘How Not to Drown’ sought an exit from a low, from feeling penned in by larger power structures, and refusing to succumb to them again. But ‘Good Girls’ portrays a certain learned confidence in knowing who and what you are, despite what others might conform to themselves. It’s having a clear vision, or something like a compound eye that can see at all angles. So, like ‘How Not to Drown’ before it, ‘Good Girls’ continues down from a scene in the first video and steers it to a new parallel conclusion. Near the end, we find Lauren spiralling on the studio floor, surrounded by the crew and ghosts of the previous videos, as the entire image cycle finally comes to a halt.”

‘Good Girls’ follows on from previous single ‘How Not To Drown’ featuring one of the band’s musical heroes, The Cure frontman Robert Smith. ‘How Not To Drown’ was released in June alongside the announcement of Screen Violence, and premiered via Zane Lowe. The accompanying official video featured both CHVRCHES and Robert Smith, with its claustrophobic, film-noir imagery a continuation of the aesthetic presented with the album’s debut single ‘He Said She Said’. Following its release, Robert Smith also remixed the single, telling The FADER he wanted his version of the single to “conjure up an irresistible midnight sea with dark mesmeric currents”.

Screen Violence was recorded almost entirely remotely between Los Angeles and Glasgow, members Lauren Mayberry, Martin Doherty and Iain Cook self-produced and mixed the album via video calls and audio sharing programs to create something that is unique and special, but inherently CHVRCHES. The album will be released August 27 2021 – pre-order is available HERE.

Next weekend, CHVRCHES will perform as a part of Splendour XR. Tickets are available for the online festival HERE.

ECHO ADORE return with evocative new single ‘SEE RED’

by the partae July 16, 2021
written by the partae

“Very correct ‘80s indie sound in here. That bass has just shuffled over from the Disintegration sessions.”
Triple J Unearthed, Dave Ruby Howe

“With such elegant lyrics and a chorus as sticky as honey it’s easy to imagine Caught In History absolutely rocking a festival main stage, and that’s exactly where we see Echo Adore heading. The only issue is that you will be left thinking, “Is it over so soon?”, which is genuinely rare for a song with a four minute timestamp.”
Happy Magazine

“I could hear some Australian classics in here and then I looked over at your influences and it all made sense.”
Triple J, Declan Byrne

This July, Echo Adore will be touring ‘See Red’ through WA on a three-date run. Reconnecting with different WA venues is one thing, and bringing their new show and music to audiences again is something the band can’t wait to do.

“We are always excited to be performing to a local Perth audience and we are fortunate to be once again visiting the Southwest region of Western Australia.”
Echo Adore

Perth duo Echo Adore return for 2021 with a powerful new single in ‘See Red’. As the band’s second single (their first for 2021), ‘See Red’ is a fresh statement piece from the indie duo who first turned heads back in 2019 with their debut, ‘Caught In History’.

This single, dripping in great riffs and captivating vocals, shows off the strong writing and performance dynamic between Echo Adore: Damian Diggs and Oliver James. Taken from forthcoming EP Lumière, ‘See Red’ is the first we’re hearing from Echo Adore’s new creative chapter.

Recorded between Pavement and Blackbird Studios in Perth, ‘See Red’ came about as a way for Echo Adore to channel their feelings towards events in the news cycle at the time. The end result is urgent, layered in emotional tone; dealing with feelings of losing control and being overwhelmed.

“There were a lot of violent events on the news during that time and we were trying to navigate that mindset. One particular event inspired Damian to write the lyrics as an internal dialogue. The music and lyrics both began to reflect the anger and vengeance of the character in the song, a story about betrayal and disillusion. It definitely has its own self contained narrative but it can relate to a lot of internal struggles, like anxiety and depression. Trying to fight your way out of a frame of mind.”
Echo Adore

The song is a strong step forward in the group’s evolution. Following the release of  ‘Caught In History’, Echo Adore saw themselves with a Pop Song of the Year nomination at the 2019 WAM Awards – early recognition of their talent and potential. Harnessing that momentum and continuing to thrive, they have become a great force on the local Perth scene.

It's a somber, folky and very lovely song.” – Brooklyn Vegan Fat Wreck Chords and singer-songwriter Joey Cape, frontman of iconic punk band Lagwagon, are excited to release “Saturday Night Fever,” the second single to be lifted from the Friday, August 13 release of his brand new solo LP, A Good Year To Forget. A forlorn-yet-somehow-uplifting track, “Saturday Night Fever” is yet another reflective song on an album that was written during a year that saw Cape lose his father, separate from his wife of 20 years, contract COVID, and move back in with his parents as a result of a livelihood lost. A Good Year To Forget is a warm and beautiful record that encapsulates all the trials and tribulations over those challenging 12 months. Stream “Saturday Night Fever” on YouTube HERE. The time Joey Cape spent with his parents over the past year didn’t just allow him to reconnect with them; it also afforded him time to write songs. Because recording studios were shutting down everywhere due to COVID, Cape got creative and turned the “cabana-type thing” he was living in into a home recording studio. “I just decided that if I was going to make a record like this, I should make it in full isolation,” he says. “I have a Murphy bed, so every morning I’d push up the bed, pull out the studio stuff, have some coffee or tea, get out my little chair and off I went.” Despite Cape’s isolation while writing A Good Year To Forget, his fans will hear much more than just a voice, guitar and bass on this record. Indeed, he ended up playing a plethora of instruments when recording the album, including electric and lap steel guitars, piano, mandolin and drums. LISTEN TO FIRST SINGLE "IT COULD BE REAL" “I almost made a solo record alone,” he laughs. “But that great fun you have in collaborating with other people in the studio is just priceless. There’s always something positive you can find–something of redeeming value in an experience where there’s a struggle of suffering. I played everything because I reached a point where I realised that’s something I’d have to hold onto if it was going to be the record I wanted and set out to make. It forced things to be very basic, but I’m okay with that.” A Good Year To Forget seeks to find the positive in the negatives to become a record of pure triumphant beauty. Hushed and haunted, there’s an almost Nick Drake-ian poignancy to these 12 songs, especially on the wistful “The Poetry Of Our Mistakes” and the forlorn-yet-somehow-uplifting “Saturday Night Fever.” “Come Home,” a song inspired directly by the words his mother had spoken on the phone, is a beautifully melancholic, slightly folky tune full of hurt and longing that also manages to be reassuring at the same time. Elsewhere, “Under The Doormat” is a harrowingly beautiful ode to a lost love of the past. “Check Your Ego At The Door” is a ballroom lament steeped in timelessness, while “Fictional” is a scornful take on the false images and lives that proliferate on social media. “By any standard, 2020 was a bad year,” Cape says. “This record has truly distilled my own experience of the past year, what I've learned and what I've felt. It feels right and I'm very proud of the result.” Fat Wreck Chords will release A Good Year To Forget on August 13, 2021.

Underoath Share Chaotic New Single ‘Damn Excuses’

by the partae July 15, 2021
written by the partae

Underoath has been a formative voice in progressive, heavy rock for almost two decades. Today, they share their blistering new single Damn Excuses out on Fearless Records. This release marks the first new music from Underoath since 2018’s Grammy-nominated full-length, Erase Me, and launches a brand new chapter in the band’s career. Damn Excuses was completely self-recorded and produced at guitarist Tim McTague’s studio, Feral Sound, in Tampa, Florida. It evokes the beautiful chaos that so many fans have found special about Underoath for years while still managing to break through new sonic and emotional boundaries.

Speaking on the track, keyboardist Chris Dudley states: “This song came out of nowhere for us. In hindsight, it probably stems emotionally from the anxiousness that a year of isolation will give you, and that ‘wanting-to-explode’ feeling came out with zero effort. It was therapeutic. This is us ready to get back into a loud room with sweaty people and experience something real together.”

Watch the visualiser for Damn Excuses here:

Damn Excuses was partly inspired by the band’s critically-acclaimed Observatory livestream experience last year. As a global pandemic shook the foundation of the music industry in 2020, interest in the digital consumption of live music began to wane after a few months. With Observatory, Underoath breathed new life into the realm with a complete overhaul of the process – creating something equal parts intimate and monumental. It carried the weight of a sold out arena show translated through vessels consumable in fan’s living rooms. What made it all the more impactful was the fact that the entire initiative was dreamt up and brought to fruition largely by the band’s internal team. Thus, providing another shining reminder of the innovation that the six members of Underoath are capable of pulling together.

This far into their storied career, Underoath has unsurprisingly faced their fair share of adversity. Through the trials and tribulations, a commitment to their craft and a sense of accountability rooted in mutual respect for each other has ensured that each new chapter for the band continues to mould their legacy in a positive fashion. With their shared history of remarkable accolades and trying hardships continuing to shape who the individual members are as people, Underoath is still just scratching the surface of what they can accomplish as a band. There are few acts in the annals of rock history that can say their best work is still ahead of them almost two decades into their career. Fortunately, Underoath falls into that category. As the world opens back up in 2021, the band is deeply committed to living up to the high expectations that fans (and themselves) have come to expect for anything associated with the project. It will undoubtedly be something special to witness as this next chapter in the Underoath story manifests.

Butter wouldn’t melt as The Lathums release angel-voiced acapella version of: HOW BEAUTIFUL LIFE CAN BE

The Lathums – How Beautiful Life Can Be (Acapella)
OUT NOW
Remaining 2021 Headline Tour Tickets Onsale Now via www.thelathums.com

After walking out on stage at their gigs to The Housemartin’s legendary acapella version of Caravan Of Love, indie heroes, The Lathums finally get their chance to walk two minutes and 30 seconds in their shoes of their heroes by performing their own stunning, stripped-to-vocals take on their recent single, How Beautiful Life Can Be. Released just two-weeks ago, the single’s summer-in-a-bottle sound celebrates the lighter side of life and high hopes that the young might, finally, be set free.

Arranged by the band in collaboration with Parr Street Studios producer, Chris Taylor with the agile ears of Paul Duffy, founder member of renowned masters of vocal harmony The Coral also guiding recording, the four Lathums dropped their instruments and discovered a brand new, affectingly intimate side to their music. Falsetto leaps replace jangling guitars and earthy baritone notes pluck instruments from the hands of the rhythm section as one of British guitar music’s most popular new bands go breathtakingly bare.

Shot on location in their native Wigan, the accompanying video for the special track, directed by James Slater, sees The Lathums take their music to market – quite literally – by singing amongst Saturday shoppers. Their town-centre appearance followed an impromptu busking trip there earlier this month.

Having seen dates at Kendal Calling, Truck Festival and Y Not Festival fall out of their summer touring plans, The Lathums push on to play Tramlines, Sheffield on Sat 24 July 2021 and a special London show with BBC Introducing, appearing at the Omeara on Wed 11 August 2021. The band, including deep-thinking lyricist-singer, Alex Moore, Rickenbacker-slinging guitarist, Scott Concepcion, drummer, Ryan Durrans and the increasingly mysterious ‘Bass Mon Jon’, just need the first chink of light on the return to live to set their summer on fire.

The full list of The Lathums 2021 UK Headline Tour dates, including a huge SOLD-OUT return to the North West at Manchester’s O2 Victoria Warehouse, plus debut shows at Glasgow Barrowland Ballroom and London’s O2 Forum Kentish Town, are as follows:

Sydney-based alternative-rock trio RedHook have just unveiled their hyperactive video clip for ‘Kamikaze’ featuring Will King from Windwaker – filmed, directed and edited by Brandon Lung (Stand Atlantic, Polaris) with assistance from Yeah Rad Creative (The Dead Love, FANGZ).

Shot at various locations around Sydney’s inner west, the clip features all three band members performing the song in a flurry of feverish visuals, including kaleidoscopic effects and hysterical strobe lights. Featuring frantic quick cut shots, a penetrating colour scheme and extreme energy, the music video is a thrilling encapsulation of the song’s chaotic nature.

Lead singer Emmy Mack comments on the clip:

“Because this song is so rapid-paced and aggro, we shelved our trademark kooky narratives and went for a more aesthetic, performance-based clip to capture some of the intensity and haywire energy of our live show and the song itself. The frenetic camera movements and dizzying lighting techniques reflect the themes of impending danger as the song’s protagonist hurtles towards their destruction.

Embarrassingly, I ended up in the ER after we filmed it from going a bit too hard trying to do a bunch of jumps and kicks in these giant emo platform boots and stacked it big time – thought I’d fractured my hand!”

RedHook’s ‘Bad Decisions’ EP has ticked up close to 2 million streams on Spotify, while singles off the EP have been further comprised by the likes of Apple Music and Amazon Music, with ‘Cure 4 Psycho’ being added to rotation on triple j, along with further radio support from Kerrang! Radio (UK), SirusXM (US), triple j Unearthed, The Faction, 4ZZZ and Aussie Music Weekly. The tracks have also received praise from blogs Rock Sound (UK), New Noise Magazine (USA), Rolling Stone (AUS), Pilerats, Music Feeds, HEAVY Mag, Maniacs and Hysteria Magazine, with multiple video clips being added to rotation on ABC’s Rage.

RedHook recently embarked on an EP headline tour throughout April and May, including multiple sold out shows in Brisbane, Sydney, Adelaide and Melbourne. They will be appearing at Halloween Hysteria in Queensland, as well as part of the music line-up of Sydney extreme sports festival District X alongside Hands Like Houses and Hooligan Hefs in October, before joining the likes of Northlane and In Hearts Wake at the inaugural Full Tilt Festival in Sydney in late November.

PRAISE FOR CAROLINE POLACHEK

“One of the greatest musicians of our time”
i-D

“In its highest register, Caroline Polachek’s voice sounds like it
might have slipped loose from the circuits of a synthesiser”

NPR

“Love songs about the moment of surrender, the pain preceding it, and the euphoria after”
Pitchfork

“Polachek’s constant evolutionary drive within indie, pop and electronica is unlike that
of many other musicians in the commercial public sphere
“
Pilerats

“Superbly put-together pop record… that hits like a southpaw’s hook”
The Guardian ★★★★ (4/5)

“Playful experimentalism and dazzling vocals”
NME ★★★★ (4/5)

“An impressive pop record”
Paste ★★★★★★★★ (8/10)

“One of the most captivating records of the year”
Clash Magazine ★★★★★★★★★ (9/10)

Caroline Polachek returns today with her brand new single ‘Bunny Is A Rider‘. The track is her first release since her recent cover of The Corrs ‘Breathless‘ and her first original music since her critically acclaimed 2019 debut solo album PANG. LISTEN TO ‘BUNNY IS A RIDER’ HERE.

Following the track’s premiere as Annie Mac‘s Hottest Record on BBC Radio 1, Caroline has also released a breath-taking official video for ‘Bunny Is A Rider‘, linked below. Of the release, Caroline shares, “’Bunny Is A Rider’ is a summer jam about being unavailable. Bunny is slippery, impossible to get ahold of. Maybe it’s a fantasy, maybe it’s a bad attitude. But anyone can be bunny, at least for three minutes and seventeen seconds. The song features a scorching bass performance from producer Danny L Harle, plus his baby daughter’s first vocal cameo.”

The single release follows the announcement of three huge shows across the US and UK this year. Polachek will grace stages at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles (August 5th) with support from Alex G and Molly Lewis, The Roundhouse in London (October 28th) with support from oklou before closing out the year at Terminal 5 in New York (December 2nd) with support from oklou and Arooj Aftab, notably historic in LA as one of the first shows booked after it’s 2021 reopening. TICKETS AVAILABLE HERE.

Polachek picks up just where she left off after the release of her critically praised album PANG, with a live set sure to highlight singles ‘Ocean of Tears‘, ‘Door‘ and ‘So Hot You’re Hurting My Feelings‘, the latter of which she performed on her late-night TV debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live! By 2020, Polachek released four new remixes as single b-sides from the album, an extended version of the track ‘Gate‘ and a cover of The Corrs‘ 2000 hit ‘Breathless‘, performed live on the Late Late Show with James Corden. PANG was given high praise NPR, Pitchfork, The FADER, Paste, NYLON, and VICE and was named the #1 album of the year by Dazed. Locally the record saw Caroline receive widespread support from Vogue Australia, Rolling Stone, Frankie Magazine, Happy, Pilerats, Purple Sneakers, triple and Double J, FBi Radio, and more.

‘Bunny Is A Rider‘ is out now, buy/stream it here.

Solo Career shares new single ‘Movie’; announces debut EP The Sentimentalist out September 17

by the partae July 15, 2021
written by the partae

PEOPLE SAY

“[Solo Career] has carved a comfy niche in the scene with her heady and mood-soaked creations.” – Weirdo Wasteland

“Hypnotic.” – VICE

“Delivering bedroom pop in a 100% original way with plenty of production tricks, but never in a way that overcooks it. All in all, it’s balanced and beautiful.” – Abby Butler, triple j

Today bedroom pop act Solo Career, the project of Dharawal / Illawarra artist Annabel Blackman (also known as singer/lead guitarist in acclaimed rock group, Body Type), shares her first official single ‘Movie’, alongside news of her debut EP The Sentimentalist, due September 17 via Dinosaur City Records.

Listen to ‘Movie’ HERE.

Written, recorded, produced and mixed by Blackman at her DIY home studio, ‘Movie’ features an icy guitar line, motorik drums and a driving bassline, with Annabel’s brusque vocals floating listlessly in the thick of the mix.

On the story behind the track, Blackman reveals:

“I wrote ‘Movie’ after seeing ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’. It was an idyllic afternoon; I walked into the old movie theatre at Bulimba in QLD with my family looking forward to an enthralling experience. We left the cinema an age later. Grandpa looked wiped, everyone was quiet, and then the bickering started and didn’t stop till we settled down at home and watched a movie starring Beyonce. The whole experience sent me into a doom spiral and made me question the integrity of my family unit.”

Talking about the songwriting process, Blackman adds:

“I started writing this song a couple of years ago. I had an idea for the guitar line when I was walking home from work and tried to make it work for ages. It wasn’t until I wrote the lyrics that I was able to mash it together into something I was happy with.”

Solo Career is the late night bedroom pop project of Annabel Blackman – architect, artist and singer/lead guitarist in acclaimed rock quartet Body Type. With Body Type, Blackman has toured Australia, the USA and the UK, supporting acts including Fontaines D.C, Pond, Alex Cameron and Unknown Mortal Orchestra on their national tours in Australia, and playing festivals SXSW, The Great Escape, Hit The North and Live At Leeds, Fairgrounds, Gizzfest and Sydney Festival off the back of releasing two highly praised EPs.

Amongst all this, Blackman has written, produced, recorded and mixed new material for Solo Career while making a name for herself across Sydney’s burgeoning music scene, opening for acts including Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, Goon Sax, Good Morning, RVG and Sasami, and landing a dinnertime slot with online music festival Isol-Aid in 2020. Live, Blackman is joined by Cecil Coleman (Body Type) on flute, a development that occurred after living together and recording a flute part late one night.

In 2020, Solo Career released two covers: Celine Dion’s ‘My Heart Will Go On’ and ‘I.M.R (In My Room)’, a synth-soaked take on the Beach Boys classic, which was added to rotation on FBi Radio and Edge Radio, and saw praise from NME Australia, Beat Magazine, Deafen County, Verve Magazine and US music magazine, New Noise, who lauded it as ‘Bandcamp of the Day’.

Previous release, ‘Feelings’, featured on Dinosaur City Records Mixtape #4, was added to a string of Spotify editorial playlists, placed in AMRAP Metro Charts top ten tracks ordered for airplay by metropolitan community broadcasters in Australia for three weeks in a row, and added to high rotation on FBi Radio.

COOL HUNTING

carwash, the emo-tinged DIY pop project of 20-year-old multi-instrumentalist and multi-disciplinary artist Garrett Seamans, today follows up the success of his 2019 single, ‘striptease‘ (+14M streams), with his latest offering, ‘boyfriend, girlfriend‘. Listen on Spotify, Apple Music and more.

Across an audio-visual universe of multiple sounds and personas, the creativity of San Diego-based artist Garrett Seamans runs freely, hardly reined in by notions of genre or medium. Unfettered, escapist experimentation is the rule; vulnerability is the constant. From the alt-pop blankets of Postcard Boy to the comparatively guitar-forward carwash and the whimsical videos he releases under his YouTube channel, phylm, this ethos is what tethers all of Garrett’s myriad projects together.

Of the track, carwash says, “‘boyfriend, girlfriend’ is the story of falling for your best friend. For me, it was in the summer when I was seventeen. I didn’t want to ruin our friendship, so it took me weeks to finally make a move… The chorus chronicles that first kiss moment. Thankfully, it went well, and we are still together a couple years later now. I wrote this song reflecting on the beginnings of our relationship. A lot of our initial bond was over music and going to shows, so I’m happy this song carries the energy that live music supplies.”

Away from the moniker of Postcard Boy, the music Seamans creates as carwash is influenced in part but not limited to: emo and indie rock of the ’90s and early aughts, sunrises spent on the San Diego coast, his cinematographic work, high school romance, a need for a language more accessible than words themselves. With half-murmured vocals that feel as though they’re longing desperately to break out of their own demure hesitance, a deluge of crunched-out guitars awash in reverb and wistful, nostalgic melodies, ‘boyfriend, girlfriend’ channels the pangs and pulls of adolescent desire, combining the coastal haziness of Best Coast with the yearning of second-wave emo and the arena-sized relatability of modern-day bedroom pop in one effortlessly sweeping, lovelorn push.

‘boyfriend, girlfriend’ by carwash is out now, buy/stream it on Spotify, Apple Music, and more.

Photo Credit: Jing Feng Download Hi-Res Image Los Angeles-based artist Hana Vu makes her Ghostly International debut with 'Maker', a commanding first glimpse into forthcoming material. 'Maker' builds on the sound of the 21-year old’s previous work, 2019’s double EP Nicole Kidman / Anne Hathaway and 2018’s self-produced How Many Times Have You Driven By, with brooding, melodic pop driven by guitar and Vu’s distinctive contralto. For the first time, she welcomes a co-producer, Jackson Phillips (Day Wave), who helps Vu create an atmosphere with a deeper sense of luster, sophistication, and urgency. Vu’s relationship with music began at ten when she taught herself to play guitar. She’d wake up every day and listen to LA’s ALT 98.7, home to ‘90s and ‘00s alternative rock; later in high school, she found the local DIY scene. She remembers, “A lot of my peer musicians were surf rock/punk type bands and so I tried to fit into that when I was gigging around. But what I was listening to at that time (St. Vincent, Sufjan Stevens) was very different from what I performed.” Ultimately she’d do her own thing, keeping a journal of bedroom pop experiments on Bandcamp, including a low-key Willow Smith collaboration and covers of The Cure and Phil Collins, before catching the ear of Gorilla vs. Bear’s Luminelle Recordings imprint, who eventually released two EPs. On new single 'Maker', tender banjo and piano serve as the base for Vu’s escalating harmonies. Overcome by remorseful exhalations, the song culminates on the lines: “save me oh my angel / are you angry / cos I’m not stronger and I crumble / oh that's my nature / just like you.” 'Maker', Vu explains: “I am not religious but I imagined a sort of desolate character crying out to an ultimately punitive force for something more.” The accompanying video, directed by Lucy Sandler, gives the mundane a beautiful edge. “I think we have a lot to learn from children's versions of reality - their complete and utter presence in the moment, their curiosity and complicated dichotomy of fragility and bravery,” says Sandler. “In ‘Maker’ I want the little girl to speak to everyone's inner child, and remind us that nothing has really changed. We are still allowed to feel lost and search for meaning in everything we encounter, that the journey may be long and scary but we will all end up back in the fold of safety eventually or just where we're meant to be.” Hana Vu - 'Maker' (Official Video) Stream / Download: https://ghostly.ffm.to/hana-vu-maker

CHUTNEY RETURN WITH HIGH ENERGY SINGLE & MUSIC VIDEO 'TALK'

CHUTNEY RETURN WITH HIGH ENERGY SINGLE & MUSIC VIDEO ‘TALK’

by the partae July 14, 2021
written by the partae

If you’re a fan of Ocean Alley and The Rubens then I think there’ll be plenty about Chutney that you’ll be into.

Declan Byrne (Triple J)

That voice is crazy good! I love the way you belt it out but keep it cruisy at the same time.

Claire Mooney (Triple J)

A breezy breed of indie rock with just enough grit, it’ll hook you in from the first chord.

Happy Mag

Vocals are akin to the likes of Alex Turner of Arctic Monkeys, with a music composition which would not seem out of place in the early 2000s.

Chutney has returned with a certified banger! It is clear upon the first listen of this downright bop that the Gold Coast’s beloved 4-piece is climbing to great heights in the indie rock scene with their latest track carrying a significant message.

It’s not often you come across a song that screams at you to listen. However, Chutney’s latest release Talk does exactly that. Within the first second of hitting play you are slapped in the face with a commanding growl from lead vocalist Matt Hansford as if to say, “pay attention, what we’re saying is important”. And it is.

Penned from the experience of seeing someone struggling and aching to do something about it, Talk encompasses the many feelings of seeing a person you care about battle with mental health issues. The lyrics are carefully curated, showing all facets of seeing someone experiencing tough times. Whilst the verses vocalise how great someone is and holds them up to the light, the chorus echoes a father figure brushing off

the severity of mental health issues by discounting his daughter’s feelings. Delving into the importance of the song’s meaning, Cal Hughes (Lead Guitar) explains:

“Talk is about looking out for your mates when they’re having a hard time – about how everyone hasstrugglesfrom time to time, and how you are so much more important than you may ever realise. It is a song about mental health and the importance of leaning on those close to you in times of need. We wanted to create an uplifting, euphoric song that tackles sensitive subject matters while providing a positive ending – your mates will always be there for you, and having that talk isthe firststep to making a positive change.”

Opening with an unforgettably powerful bassline and cymbal soaked drum beat, Talk instantly captures your attention. Complimented with hip-hop laced vocals from frontman Matt Hansford, the track clearly draws upon rap influences and infuses it with that classic Chutney sound, often likened to rockers Arctic Monkeys and Sticky Fingers. Also carrying the attitude of industry icons such as Rage Against The Machine and Gorillaz, the track’s electrifying guitar lines in the second verse drive the single home, building to a perfectly executed, anthemic chorus just begging to be belted by a sea of people in a festival amphitheatre.

Tied to the single release is an accompanying music video, shot by Nicholas Stevens of Fastback Studios, that takes the viewer on a journey through some local-loved Gold Coast locations (Mo’s Desert Clubhouse, Alfreds Apartment, Mermaid Beach and more). The humorous clip starts with Hansford waking up on the beach at sunrise after a big night out, and continues to follow him as he navigates the day without a cent to his name and one goal: get to the gig. Showing that even with a rough start, you can still make a day your own with the right attitude.

Watch the music video here.

2021 is proving to be a successful year for the Chutney boys, with the Gold Coast natives bringing their infectious energy to the stage and leaving fans wanting more. From tour support with Queensland legends Beddy Rays and upcoming shows with Buttered, to their first festival appearance at Springtime alongside Ruel, Ball Park Music, Hermitude, Sycco and more in September, this four-piece is just getting started. With an upcoming single launch event, plans for another two singles and a run of shows before the end of the year, you can expect to be hearing a lot more from Chutney.

LOWLIFE SHARE NEW TRACK ‘FRIENDS’

by the partae July 14, 2021
written by the partae

LISTEN

Late last year, Essex newcomers LOWLIFE dropped their debut track “WASTELAND”, hitting 300,000 streams with little promotion beyond social media and a nihilistic “if it moves, kill it” video game visual.

Today, they up their game with their second track “Friends,” which is out now via Hellcat Records.

Listen HERE.

“Friends,” is a gnarly, confrontational beast, with grinding guitars, clouting beats and bass that delivers a bulging heaviness and a gloating groove. The Essex-accented rhymes and gang call vocals pay tribute to every kind of friend imaginable: lowlife felons, failed criminals, creatives who break the mould, friends who secretly hate you, and others who will keep you in your thoughts even if you rarely see them. It’s a complete tapestry of life in three-and-a-half minutes.

Liam Haygarth explains, “’Friends’ was one of the first songs we wrote together during the first lockdown when the pandemic just started, we were sending across ideas/beats to each other over Zoom. Most of the track took shape within the first few days of making it, and then it was just a case of decluttering some bits, and really working on the groove. I think we rerecorded bass about 3 times before we were happy with how it sounded with the drums.

The song is about Friends (duh), and how the nature, foundation, and intentions of friendships change throughout life. It has aspects of Latin, Pop and Hip-Hop, we were influenced by Dr. Dre, Eminem, and Timbaland on the beat”.

And friendship is the basis of the LOWLIFE story. Jordan Cardy earned early acclaim under his RAT BOY alter ego, but he couldn’t have done it without his bandmates Liam Haygarth and Harry Todd. LOWLIFE gave them a fresh chance to be officially equals, especially after Tim Armstrong of Rancid renown recruited them for his Hellcat label.

Ironically the band’s early days were hampered by the separation of lockdown, forcing them to instead collaborate remotely. As restrictions lifted, they made a dilapidated studio lock-up on a farm their unlikely HQ, their home for a DIY process in which they create music, artwork, music video and merch away from the prying eyes and interference of the outside world.

LOWLIFE is Liam Haygarth, Harry Todd and Jordan Cardy (aka RAT BOY).

Cody Munro Moore shares new single ‘Bulli Beach’, recorded at Stranded Recording Studio

PEOPLE SAY

“Cody Munro Moore knows his rock.” –  ToneDeaf

“Versatile, intelligent songwriting and panache for ear worm hooks”  – The Music

BUY/STREAM ‘BULLI BEACH’

Cody Munro Moore, Dinosaur City Records co-founder and singer/guitarist in Big White, shares his first official single in over four years, ‘Bulli Beach’.

‘Bulli Beach’ was recorded, mixed and mastered at Stranded Studios, Bellambi, a full-service recording studio which Munro Moore built and co-founded with bandmate Bowen Shakallis.

While Munro Moore’s debut album Perfume Nightmare fused post-punk sensibilities with new wave and Chicago house influence, ‘Bulli Beach’ sees Cody cast aside his drum machines and synthesisers in favour of acoustic guitar, organ and drums.

On his inspiration behind the track, Cody says:

“It was the summer of 2021. Friends in Thirroul couldn’t get houses because of the influx of those escaping life in the city. There were a lot of characters, friends or otherwise, camping down by the beach. Some had a choice to be there in campervans with television sets blaring. Others not so much, their sedans spilling earthly possessions as they’d look bleakly out from the boot in the early morning light. Either way, it seemed to be a way of life and I liked that.”

Cody Munro Moore shared an acoustic, live take on 2017 single ‘No Matter How Hard’ last week. The original single was taken from his 9-track debut album, Perfume Nightmare, which landed feature album on FBi Radio, 2SER and 4ZZZ, was played on triple j, praised by the likes of ToneDeaf, Happy and The Music, and added to a string of influential Apple Music playlists.
