The Kraken Black Spiced Rum has announced the launch of the After Dark project, a collaboration designed to connect up-and-coming Australian artists, through their stories told through lyrics and melodies.
The Australian arts industry has been decimated by COVID-19 and continues to suffer through ongoing restrictions. To help support the music industry, The Kraken has teamed up with five up and coming Aussie artists to curate the ultimate playlist, After Dark, hosted on Spotify.
Artists including genre-defying Jackson Brazier (@jxn_), Moutaiz Al-Obaidi, (@motez), Jerome Farah (@jerome.farah), Steve Cousins (steve_cousins_music) and Toby Nicholls (@nerve.mp3), have selected a mix of music that represents the moody and mysterious moment of Australia’s twilight.
The playlist imitates dusk with a subtle hint of brightness and melody, engulfed in darker, edgier beats and basslines. It’s moody and auspicious, urging listeners to make peace with chaos and change.
The artists sat down with The Kraken to discuss the impact of COVID-19 on the music industry and how the shift in focus created a new source of inspiration.
Motez, Adelaide based record producer, musician and DJ, said his focus shifted when the reality of the pandemic hit. He took that time to create a completely new body of work titled ‘Soulitude’, made up of five emotive, ambient, electronic compositions which stemmed from his newfound state of isolation. Motez’s hunger to give back to his fans heightened as he continued to push the boundaries and explore new sounds and ways to produce, releasing what he calls, his most exciting work yet.
Motez noted: “It was hard to pick only a handful songs for this particular playlist as it’s my favourite time, where the darkness creates the promise of an exciting night. I love how music can reflect that through a melody engulfed in darker, edgier beats and basslines, it’s sensual and filled with promise.”
After Dark features both local and global artists, and includes the exciting new release, Nintendo, from R&B and pop music singer-songwriter-guitarist and internet personality, JXN. His inspiration for the new song drew on how he feels played by a romantic partner. A true reflective moment, drawn from real life events, that was written during twilight.
Brisbane rapper, Nerve, selected music to show how global music can be appreciated all over the world, and how people can connect through great sounds that breaks .
Nerve stated: “It’s awesome to partner with Kraken and celebrate homegrown Australian talent. I think what’s exciting about the playlist is that Australian music is standing on par with international artists. In the next few years, we will see a lot more eyes and ears focus on music from Down Under, especially from the hip-hop space.”
By honouring some of Australia’s hottest up and coming talent, The Kraken hopes to bring people together during twilight, to enjoy their favourite local music and reconnect over an ice-cold refreshing Kraken and Dry or Kraken and Cola premix.

The playlist has been designed to be experienced during twilight, when the atmosphere is only partially illuminated by the sun. A time when there’s only enough light left to illuminate the surroundings that are slowly fading away and brining the promise of an exciting night. Similar to the twilight occasion, The Kraken has character, independence and mystery.

As the reality of COVID-19 hit, Motez’ focus shifted to a completely new body of work titled ‘Soulitude’. Five emotive, ambient, electronic compositions that stemmed from his newfound state of isolation. The EP showcased a brand-new side to Motez’ ever-evolving production capabilities and was premiered through a grand sunset live-performance stream. His multi-pronged approach to hip-hop has made him one of the most versatile and talented artists in the space, widely expanding his sonic portfolio with each release. Nerve spent his early days rapping over boom-bap beats, before delving into the world of grime where he spat comfortably in viral cyphers alongside legends like Alex Jones, Fraksha and Diem.
2021 saw Nerve release his most diverse project yet in ‘Tall Poppy Season,’ an EP which saw him further incorporate melodic vocals and vulnerable themes into his repertoire. The Forum Melbourne is an iconic venue in Melbourne. Shortly following it’s 93rd birthday the other day, it was filled to capacity for another evening of live music.
South east Melbourne artist Mlbrn opened the evening, passionately expressing his experiences through his music. He even took a brave moment to do a “shoey” from a punter’s work boot.
The crowd waited with excited anticipation to finally see Australia’s premier hip hop artists hit the stage. The atmosphere was palpable when the opener of “The Prophecy” came on with Bliss N Eso making an dynamic entrance onstage.
From start to finish, fans had their hands lifted, chanting and engaging to every track, with Bliss N Eso running through their extensive catalogue. From their latest release “The Sun” including “Send it” , “Good People”, and “OG’s” to the classics “Reflections” and “The Sea is Rising”. As the night heated up, off came MC Bliss’ shirt and on came special guest Fergus James as they performed “Know Yourself” for the first time.
Bliss N Eso go from strength to strength in their live performances and there’s no letting up. Still one the reigning aussie hip hop OGs.

Canadian artist Ashton Adams joins forces with rap duo 100M’s, consisting of Nukky & Cap E, for their new single “HOV,” a catchy and hard-hitting dance-rap track with an equally hype music video featuring both of Ashton‘s parents. As a protege of Orlando McGhee of Jay Z‘s Roc Nation earlier and now ONErpm, Adams brings a seamless fusion of hip-hop and underground house style to his music. “HOV” (which does play on a certain famous rapper’s nickname) showcases the best of today’s bass house music scene with the rhythm of the best hip-hop records. Largely composed of B-roll cuts, the accompanying music video allows the listener take a peek into Ashton‘s vision of having a good time, fusing underground house, urban music with main stage vibes, and experimenting with unique textures and sounds. He is also a part of the 401 WST project with the Toronto Raptors‘ DJ 4Korners.
As a producer, label owner, and drummer, Ashton Adams has had an illustrious career shaped by creating and collaborating on music that represents his love of underground hip-hop and house music. He has worked with many artists and brands in various capacities, including viral Tik-Tok star 347aidan, Bryan “BC” Cockett, Vito Luprano (Celine Dion‘s executive producer), Miami’s Hit Factory where Nicki Minaj, Timbaland, Daddy Yankee, AC/DC, and more recorded at where he met 100M’s. He is also the founder and operator of the Canada-based Kyngdom Records and Kyngdom Studios, where signed artists include the popular Justin Bieber doppelganger, Brad Sousa. To add to his resume, Ashton will also be touring with renowned Canadian rock band Stereos as a drummer with Brad Sousa for their reunion tour in the summer of 2022. He gives back to the community as a high priority and partnered with The Waterloo Region District School Board to offer classes for high schoolers who are passionate about singing, rapping, music production, photography, and cosmetology. Interested in how you know each other, your history of making tracks together in the past and how this particular track was made?
RayRay: “We met each other through the Barong Family. We did a song together on my “Alien Mutation” EP last year called “Watch Out”, and it turned out to be really good.
It’s one of the most hyped songs in my EP, so we decided to collab again. Out of Cookies sent me the idea first, and we sent the stems back and forth. Have always been a big fan of their music. I’m very excited to release this trap banger with them”.
Out Of Cookies: “As a matter of fact we have met RayRay in person only once. It was in Amsterdam at the Barong Family dinner during ADE back in 2018. When we collaborated on ”Watch Out” back in 2021, she was killing the track with her vocals like she always does. But we actually didn’t expect her to sing like this, like she did in the breaks of ”Keep It 100”. Once we heard it, we were blown away and immediately fell in love with these vocals. That’s when all the pieces of the puzzle fell into place.”
Along with the vocals, can sense a variety of genre influences which creates a unique hybrid feeling to the track. Would you mind explaining the genre elements in this particular track?
RayRay: “Both of us make all kinds of trap-influenced music, and I also use my vocals a lot in music. I started to sing on my own music since last year.
I feel like this release is a good balance in between hard drop and soft break with a swag attitude. It also mixes in some dubstep elements. I really love the energy in the song.”
Loads of energy indeed, also sensed a bit of drum and bass/jungle/break elements, is that correct?
Out of Cookies: “You’re right about the drum & bass part. We absolutely love to use these old drum & bass / jungle sounds in our productions. It was used a lot in Happy Hardcore tracks back in the 90’s. We just like to combine that classic sound with those new heavier sounds. We actually made a full Drum & Bass track last month.”
Great to include a lot of variety, a question for RayRay in terms of the vocals “Keep it 100” – is there any specific meaning or memories associated?
RayRay: “I love to pretend I am playing different roles in movie or comic books when I write my lyrics. In this song, I was imaging I am a successful assassin who enjoys his missions so much.
It also refers to our music life that we make cool music, and we make it dope. We keep what we do 100.”
On that note, keeping it 100 in what you do, are there any special shows and other productions to be aware of in the coming future?
RayRay: “I’m making my EP currently!
And going to be on tour with yellow claw in US, and I’m going to play at Tomorrowland this year!”
Any advice you would give to others?
RayRay: “As an artist, staying true to yourself, being proud of who you are and showing everyone that you genuinely have the passion and the love for what you’re doing! You can discover all the possibilities in music, so you can really create something meaningful & inspiring… no matter where are you from or who you are.”

Where are you currently based?
At the moment, myself and Kurt are based in Pottsville, NSW and Ruby and Tex live in Brisbane, QLD. We’re about 2 hours drive away from eachother.
How did you first start playing music?
For me personally, I always wanted to be a singer. When I was a kid my sisters and I were obsessed with playing Sing Star, every weekend we would be doing it. When I was probably 10 or 11, I started to be more interested in bands (rather than just listening to Avril Lavigne on repeat), and the first band I fell in love with was Coldplay. I got tickets to their concert for my 12th birthday and it was the most inspiring core memory for me and still one of my favourite concerts to date. Ever since then, I knew exactly what I wanted to do – be in a band like Coldplay, tour the world and write songs. I remember learning singing and bass guitar in school, and then eventually teaching myself to play guitar so I could write songs.
What’s been happening recently?
We’ve just released our new single ‘Give You Everything’ plus a Y2K inspired music video to go with it. We’ve also announced our debut album ‘Now And Then’ which is coming out May 20th. We’re super excited to finally be able to talk about it, we’ve been working on it for so long now!
You’ve just released your single ‘Give You Everything’ what influenced the sound and songwriting?
This song came to life in early 2020 whilst we were in LA having a writing session with Sarah Aarons and John Hill. The ideas behind the song were inspired by both Sarah and us (Kurt and I) having similar experiences at the start of our career in the industry, which was essentially having people walk over you and take advantage of you because you’re young, naïve and still figuring things out. I think the core message of the song is that you can’t always give someone everything – you have to keep something for yourself. Sonically we straight away knew this one was going to have our 90’s/Y2K influences shine through, which our producer Kon Kersting was able to bring out whilst we were recording the song. We didn’t know it at the time we were writing it, but ‘Give You Everything’ was really the pinnacle of our debut album – thematically, lyrically and how we imagined it sonically. It was kinda the start of the new E&TD era.
How did you go about writing this track?
We had a writing session planned as I mentioned before with Sarah Aarons and John Hill at John’s studio in Los Angeles. Kurt had come up with these really interesting chords on the tour bus before we had arrived in LA, and he thought it would be a cool idea to bring them up in the session. Writing with Sarah and John was incredible, they had so many amazing ideas for the chords and after a few hours we had written and demoed an acoustic-style demo of the song. We were so stoked with it already, even though it was just the bones. When we were forced to come home in 2020, Kurt and I decided to turn our two-room tiny house into a studio where we could fully immerse in writing songs. We knew we wanted to keep working on ‘Give You Everything’, with some more guitar parts and a bridge and things like that. We had put together a more fleshed out demo, and sat with it for a year before we headed into the studio to record it for the album.
Where and when did you record/produce/master and who with?
The album was produced and recorded by Konstantin Kersting, who is a friend of ours and we’ve worked with him for the majority of our releases. It felt really good to be able to do our debut album with him. We did the drums and some of the bass tracking at Airlock Studios and the rest of it at Kon’s studio, both in Brisbane. Some extra parts were also put in at our home studio in Pottsville. The album was also mastered by Leon Zervos at Studios 301 in Sydney.
How does this single relate to the rest of the album?
‘Give You Everything’ was definitely a pinnacle point of the album thematically, lyrically and how we imagined it sonically. We really loved the nostalgic vibe to it, and we wanted to explore that concept more – which we ended up doing for the entire album. It was really difficult when we came home from the US due to COVID – there were a lot of mental health barriers we had to overcome, and using nostalgia in our songwriting was almost a form of escapism for us at that time. I think that’s why a lot of people can relate to it, because I think we were all wishing to be in a different time at that stage of life. The single really did trigger a lot of the common themes, and eventually the album title ‘Now And Then’.
How did the concept for the music video come about?
I remember listening to the demo of the song with Kurt shortly after it was written, and it’s a common thing for us to talk about initial thoughts on visuals and colours and things like that pretty early on in the piece. Kurt was talking about the idea of a high school day dream scene, which we both agreed would go along so well with the song. Once the song was recorded and it came time to actually start planning the music video, Kurt had created an entire vision board of scenes like playing in a high school hallway, going to a party in a limo, and having animated versions of us inspired by Lizzie McGuire which was a show all of us watched all the time as kids. We asked director Nick Maguire to work on the project with us, and it was amazing to see how he was able to turn all of Kurt’s ideas and concepts into reality – including shooting the entire thing on film!
Where and when did you film?
We filmed the video at the start of the year at a few different locations. The bedroom scene was at our stylist Zoë’s place, she had just moved in so we were lucky enough to be able to re decorate her room for the scene. The school scene was actually my old high school, my old art/photography teacher was nice enough to help us get in on a weekend and shoot for a few hours. It was kinda weird to be back there but cool we got to do the video there. It definitely had the Y2K high school corridor style we were looking for!
Who did you work with during the creation of the film clip?
We worked with Nick Maguire for the video. He directed it, and really helped bring the entire vision into reality. We’ve worked with him for previous videos like ‘YOU’, and thought he would be the perfect person to understand the vision and bring out the ideas that we had in our brains.
What did you find most challenging and rewarding during the process?
I think the hardest thing in general putting the song together was finding motivation when our mental health wasn’t at it’s best. It was super tough. It felt like there was nothing going on but also an overwhelming amount of things happening, which is really a strange feeling. Once we had recorded the album, we were all in a not perfect but much better headspace, and COVID was still making it difficult to organise things – especially since Kurt and I were living in a state that was closed off to QLD where Ruby and Tex live. That was so hard to navigate, but we always found a way to make it work.
Who are you listening to at the moment?
At the moment Kurt and I have been listening to the new War On Drugs album. It’s so amazing and we always have it on in the car, it’s super inspiring for us as songwriters. We’ve also being loving the new Pinegrove record and Holly Humberstone’s new EP.
What do you like to do away from music?
Personally, I’m really into art. I love doing it in my free time, and I’m always trying to think of new things I can create with it. I’m trying to practice stick-and-poke tattooing at the moment, which is fun. I also love playing my Nintendo Switch, it’s honestly my favourite down-time thing to do where I don’t have to think about anything!
What’s planned for 2022?
We’ve got our debut album ‘Now And Then’ coming out May 20th this year, which is super exciting and we’ve had it in the works for a little while now! We’re also finally going on tour with our friends The Vanns, then heading out for our headline shows across Australia before heading over to the US for Bottlerock and more. We’re just excited to be able to play new music to everyone, and also leave our bedrooms to be honest haha.
Favourite food and place to hangout?
As a band, we actually always go to Guzman Y Gomez after rehearsals every week. It’s just a thing that we always do, because it’s so good. If we aren’t hanging out at a food place, we’re always at Pedal Empire in Brisbane!

Though their presence was strongly felt across some seriously stirring offerings of indie pop in 2021, Perth three piece Dulcie are wasting no time in bolstering the momentum surrounding them; charging out the gates for 2022 with their new single, ‘tell ur friends’.
The track, released just ahead of the girls’ national tour supporting Ocean Alley in February, is a spirited and dynamic release. It shows the group’s constant evolution fans have been able to track and follow since 2020: a galvanising moment for the trio as they take another step into a refreshed and confident space as songwriters and musicians.
A song about realising and appreciating one’s own self-worth, both in and outside of a relationship, ‘tell ur friends’ comes as a co-write between Dulcie and songwriter Chris Chidiac (Polarheart). Picnic London presents a double room takeover at the UK’s most treasured clubbing institute, fabric, for their 10th birthday celebration. Having long held a place in the hearts of the capital’s raving circuit, as well as building a new community in pockets around Europe, they now set the bar even higher by marking their 10th year in style across fabric’s Room 1 and Room 2.
Since launching in 2012, Picnic have been the epicentre of many memorable moments at a vast selection of distinctive international clubbing spaces, including Hackney Marshes, Victorian Vaults, FOLD, Studio Spaces, BRET Amsterdam, Doka Amsterdam, Hoppetosse Berlin and Lion & Lamb to name just a few. As well as making their mark internationally event wise, the past few years has seen the picnic label release music from artists such as Martinez and Pelle and additionally launch their own festival brand Someplace Somewhere, giving revellers a new dimension of the picnic party experience.
The artists most frequently affiliated playing for picnic are the kind that are best known for their deep digging prowess, and the cast of international selectors they have lined up to celebrate their 10th year is no exception. First lady of Berlin house tINI will make her debut for the event and will perform a special b2b with French mastermind Dyed Soundorom. Bookings are now open for the highly anticipated new all-year-round venue, which cost $5.2million to build and is championing Victorian producers with a 100% Victorian beverage menu & 90% Victorian food menu*.
Floating on the Yarra River, the venue will offer a relaxed setting for up to 690 guests, with sweeping city views and Southbank’s bustling promenade alongside. Guests will enjoy a unique eating and dining experience where they can feel immersed in an inner-city garden oasis.
Partnering with Drink Victorian, Yarra Botanicals is committed to a 100% Victorian drinks list. The all-local line up is extensive, with cocktails, wines, beers, ciders and premium spirits. A variety of Yarra Botanical flavours grace the Signature Yarra Botanicals Spritz menu which the Peculiar Pepper Berry Spritz (Billson’s Alfred Peculiar gin, grapefruit, Pepper Berry, Prosecco and soda) and Lemon Myrtle & Jasmine Spritz (Four Pillars gin, Lemon Myrtle, jasmine water, Limoncello and soda). Victorian producers include Two Birds Brewing, Rochford Wines, Fixating Brewing and Grainshaker Ausvodka.
The food menu celebrates the bounty of seasonal produce available from Victorian farms and fisheries, and proudly name drops the Victorian regions that power each dish. Executive Chef Telina Menzies’ menu is designed for socialising and sharing, with tasty snacks, fresh local seafood and six woodfired pizzas.
The 90-hour sourdough pizzas are made from Aussie stone ground flour, water and Mount Zero pink river salt. Soft cheeses are by That’s Amore Cheese, meats are from Salt Kitchen and the vegetables are Victorian. The pizzas flavours are Classic Tomato with mozzarella, basil (Yarra Valley), Squid with Murray Cod Belly, scallop, tomato and chilli (Coastal Victoria), Western Plains Pork & Fennel Sausage with honey, radicchio and ricotta (Yarra Valley), Kent Pumpkin with Meredith goat’s cheese, Warrigal greens pesto & smoked mozzarella (Meredith), Prosciutto with fig, tomato & smoked mozzarella (Ballarat) and Wattle Bank Farm Oyster Mushroom with radicchio & smoked mozzarella (Wattle Bank).
