The Oot N’ Oots Premiere

by the partae July 18, 2021
written by the partae

A touching ode to our favourite four legged friends (special shout out to their beloved cat Moses…may he rest in peace),  Pets is a folk-pop confection for the ages, drawing on a myriad of styles flavoured with classic roots vibes and infused with The Oots signature style – an instant jam!  “Maybe in the spirit of White Album era Beatles musically, the song has a roving melody and a stripped down arrangement featuring accordion,” says the band.  “Glockenspiel, and beautiful violin performances provided by our friends from the Okanagan Symphony Orchestra Sarah Anderson and Ashley Kroecher.”

CFMA and WCMA nominated The Oot n’ Oots make kids music that is, to quote Jerry Garcia, not for kids only. Drawing on diverse influences from the history of rock n’ roll, this is a band with chops, soul, and swagger. Their original songs are wildly imaginative, brimming with humour and inspiration. The band includes 14-year-old Ruth Cipes (voice, ukulele), described as “…a force of nature.” by Spare the Rock, Spoil the Child host Bill Childs, with her dad Ezra (voice, guitar) and uncles Ari (voice, guitar), Gabe (voice, bass), and Matthew (voice, drums). Ruth trades lead vocal duties with Ari and Ezra. In performance the group casts a spell of freedom, lightheartedness, and laughter. This is truly entertainment for the whole family, enlivening community, joy, and understanding through free-spirited musical performance. The first single from the band’s third album, “Thank You Universe”, was released June 3, 2020, and was named “#3 Song of the Year” in a Kid’s Radio Programmers Poll. The band’s previous releases have been nominated for two Western Canadian Music Awards and a Canadian Folk Music Award, and their second album Electric Jellyfish Boogaloo was named on the Fids and Kamily Awards top 20 albums for kids and families in 2018.

Beach Body ‘Almost Summer’ Premiere

by the partae July 18, 2021
written by the partae
Written in the spring of 2020 whilst holed up in a small cabin near a deserted Northern Saskatchewan village – and then recorded in a funeral-home-turned-recording-studio (SoulSound Studio) – the new music is a testament to their creative output and consistent drive for new, fresh and forward facing sounds. “I started writing ‘Almost Summer’ in 2018, when I was asked to write a theme song for my favourite little Regina music festival Swamp Fest,” says lead man Rory Copithorn. “I watched Wes Craven’s 1982 film Swamp Thing on repeat for a few days for some inspiration and the final version of the song has a not so subtle lyrical reference to the movie which inspired it. All in all, it’s a song about looking back at a time when all I could do was look forward, thinking real life would start some-place on the horizon.”

Formed in the summer of 2017 in a garage in the heart of the Canadian prairies, Beach Body took their time to marinade in their creative juices.  And that same garage is where they would perfect their laid-back brand of landlocked indie rock.  With three EP’s already under their belt  (“Plain Life” – 2017, “Curb Ciggies” – 2018, and “Beach Body Presents: The Southside Coyote Boys” – 2019)  the band is thrilled to be releasing their new tunes to the world.

AEM ‘Hot In The City’ Premiere

by the partae July 18, 2021
written by the partae

With a long-standing presence in the industry AEM has begun moving away from her former genre of Country (as well as her namesake Amy Metcalfe) and has focused on new endeavors. Back in the country world she found success with Billboard charting, award noms (and even writing for legend Reba McEntire) – but she found her true calling when she  recorded vocals for “Letting Go” with DJ Kav. The song led to her performing an opening slot at a sold out Chainsmokers concert in Calgary Alberta and it cemented the decision to turn her focus to new goals in the music industry as it just felt “right”.

Changing her frequent destination from Nashville to Los Angeles AEM has already made a splash on the west coast writing and gaining the attention of writer and producer Dubkiller. Working with Rock Mafia for many years Dubkiller has had his hand in producing and writing for artists like Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez, Zedd, Brittany Spears and more.

Krimsonn Joins the Ranks of NFT-fueled label Purple Fly with New Single “River Runs Dry”

by the partae July 16, 2021
written by the partae

Artists: Krimsonn
Title: River Runs Dry
Label: Purple Fly

Download / Stream

Krimsonn‘s “River Runs Dry” is a big-room-influenced vocal track that holds a deeper meaning for many emerging artists. Its driving, deep bassline is complemented by jazzy instrumental melodies and baritone vocals, combining dance music with swing elements for a unique and catchy vibe. The lyrics “I won’t stop till the river runs dry” are a testament to the challenges many artists face when trying to take risks with their music, as support for “risky” ideas is often hard to find. Purple Fly itself has been defying the norm by its very existence as the world’s first NFT-fueled record label, so it’s no surprise that Krimsonn has found himself right at home.

“‘River Runs Dry‘ is about something that many artists go through – sometimes we want to feel free to create something unique and true to the artform but it’s hard to find people that believe in unusual and risky ideas. Melodically, it combines elements of dance with swing, with catchy and strong vocals.” – Krimsonn

Purple Fly is an independent imprint utilizing crypocurrency’s hottest frontier as a platform for the spectrum of electronic music. The label’s goal is to support collaborations of all forms of art, connecting music and stunning visuals for an immersive experience that spans the sonic realms of trance to trap. Purple Fly releases NFT directly on its official website with each music drop, enabling artists to have access to direct support from their fan base while expressing their creativity. El Salvador-based Krimsonn joins artists such as BLVD., Fatman Scoop, Shaquille O’Neal with the release of “River Runs Dry” after previous tracks signed to KSHMR‘s Dharma, Hardwell‘s Revealed, Sam Feldt‘s Heartfeldt, Ultra Records, and more. He has collaborated with Thomas Gold, Jeffrey Sutorious, and more. Stay tuned for more boundary-pushing tracks from Krimsonn and Purple Fly.

Updog

by the partae July 16, 2021
written by the partae
Where are you currently based?

Currently based in Copenhagen, Denmark

How did you first start playing music?

Started playing the classical guitar at the age of seven. My dad was what got me into it all, he would always play and sing and I was so jealous of him being able to do that.

What’s been happening recently?

A lot! Personally, just got married and that has been an exciting journey :). Musically just working on my next project and getting into a lot of sessions with other writers and producers.

Your new single ‘Overthink’ is out now of your upcoming EP ‘Skellies’ what influenced the sound and songwriting for Overthink?

Sound-wise this whole EP is super quirky and different compared to what I usually do. I really honed in on the voice acting and decided to be as silly and weird as I could. ‘Overthink’ is just me being open about all the extremes my brain goes to, I’m a textbook over thinker and felt like it was important for me to write that out for myself.
How did you go about writing overthink?

I think I was just having one of those days where I couldn’t write because I was just overthinking the writing process. I got so annoyed I just started shouting in my room ‘I overthink I overthink I overthink’ and I really liked the rhythm behind how I was shouting that and just started singing each line chromatically while following a harmonic minor scale. It instantly stuck with me and knew there was something there.
What does Overthink mean to you?

It’s just a reminder to myself to take it easy and let life take its natural course. I often feel like my overthinking is a huge perk, because I can really plan situations out and avoid running into trouble, but at the same time it can be super limiting and take the joy out of simple joyful situations.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who with?

I wrote this end of October 2020, dark halloween season, my favourite season haha. I was working with Malthe Seierup who actually co-wrote and produced this full EP with me. At the time we were working out of this underground bunker studio in the centre of Copenhagen. It was located right outside a park, had no running water or toilet. It was dingey, dark and reeked of cigarettes and alcohol due to other people using the other studios. That said, it was a vibe, I really liked writing down there. There was also this super old, out of tune piano we’d always jam around and write songs on. Glad I don’t work there anymore, but I kind of liked it and it inspired a lot of great music!

How did you approach the recording process?

Generally I’d go into the studio with a melody and some lyrics. I would just play and sing the song on my guitar and we’d start building it out on the computer from there on.

Please tell us about the EP and how it came about:

It all started with the first song ‘break the norm’ the first single from the EP. I was having a hard time finding my new direction after my last EP ‘bouncy boy’. I was also watching a lot of Tim Burton movies and documentaries about Disney and their whole relationship with Tim Burton’s team. It inspired me so much and I just felt like I wanted to take that act-y, quirky route with this EP. Again most of these songs were written around Halloween season, which tends to be the best season for me to write to be honest, something always clicks for me around that time of year.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Listening a lot to Upsahl these days, really love her sound, her vocals and her writing. Super inspired by her!

What do you like to do away from music?

I love to cook a lot but music right now is my ‘away’. I have a full time job, so in my spare time music is what I do for the most part. I’m also just super into mafia movies and series. Been binge watching the Sopranos this last month.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2021?

For one, trying to take a holiday!  Wrapping up and writing my next project, and continuing to show my face more through acoustic videos or livestreams.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

Definitely a good simple Pasta Aglio e olio and Cacio e Pepe or just a good sourdough bread with some fine extra virgin greek olive oil… that always hits the spot. Always love hanging out at those brewery / bodega bars in Copenhagen. They’re not super classy but they’re super vibe-y!

Life Without Andy

Since first emerging through wild word-of-mouth fire, feverish anticipation of The Lazy Eye’s next drop of music. Today they deliver, sharing their sophomore release, EP2 via The Orchard. LISTEN HERE.

In 2021, The Lazy Eyes have truly held nothing back with their own curated festival, Lazyfest, a sold out headline tour and new music releases swiftly following their breakout in January of last year. With EP2 they pick up where EP1 left off, and now with their new lineup they reveal the product of time spent bringing new recordings to life. Each song on EP2 channels a different path and emotion to the last, between love songs and jam songs, The Lazy Eyes deliver a sonic pathway through each twisted journey in life. Joining the lovelorn ‘Nobody Taught Me‘ and the polychromatic trip of ‘Where’s My Brain???‘, is latest single ‘The Island‘, a continuation from the story they began with ‘The Seaside‘, The Lazy Eyes reveal is a song for escapism, “A song that while listening, you can close your eyes to and let your imagination create imagery.”

WATCH: ‘The Island’ (Official Music Video)

Lifting the veil on ‘The Island‘s making, the band share: “The Island was written about a place where none of The Lazy Eyes band members have been in real life, and acts as the sequel to The Seaside. An imaginary island that is a sort of utopia but is also filled with mystery. The writing process and a demo recording took place in Harvey’s childhood bedroom as he recalls – ‘All I remember was recording a terrible demo on GarageBand and really struggling to sing it because I had a cold that day. It’s interesting to hear the demo these days because you can hear the parts before they were refined as a result of playing the song over and over live. The demo also doesn’t include the final guitar melody which was added by Itay in a rehearsal and really finished the song off with a bang.”

The Lazy Eyes are Harvey Geraghty (vocals, guitar, keyboard), Itay Shachar (vocals, guitar), Leon Karagic (bass) and Noah Martin (drums). At 15 years old, they met at a performing arts high school which provided fertile ground to pursue their creative endeavours. In the time since, the group have built a cult following with their magnetic live set. Long before their debut single, word of them spread like wildfire. This eventually reached the BBC’s Abbie McCarthy who aired the then unreleased ‘Cheesy Love Song‘ during a takeover on Australia’s national youth broadcaster, triple j. In the year that followed, their debut EP saw The Lazy Eyes sell out headline shows, amass a combined 3 million streams and receive praise from Apple Music’s Matt Wilkinson, Bandcamp, Atwood Magazine, American Songwriter, Monster Children, land at #17 on triple j Unearthed’s Top 50 Most Played Artists of 2020 and many more.

In the time since, the group have worked hard to finesse their craft, with EP2 working to show how much more the music students had to offer following their acclaimed debut that landed The Lazy Eyes on the coveted NME 100 for 2021. Initially written while still in high school, it was only until recently that the songs of EP2 were taken to the recording studio. The band share “These are the first tracks we recorded using Ableton (previously using GarageBand) which opened up a whole lot more possibilities. These new tools inspired us to make our recordings more tapestry-like, inspired by albums like Bon Voyage by Melody’s Echo Chamber.” The response so far? Praise from V Man, Complex, Happy Mag, Gigwise, NME, KCRW, Alt Citizen, FBi Radio, Double J and Unearthed, Spin, Dublab, Northern Transmissions and others for ‘Nobody Taught Me‘ and ‘Where’s My Brain???‘; plus rave reviews for Lazyfest from the Sydney Morning Herald, Life Without Andy and more anticipation for their upcoming appearance at Bris Day Out. If EP2 saw The Lazy Eyes find their feet, there’s no doubt their jackpot will come faster than most anticipate.

Pip Blom share new track ‘It Should Have Been Fun’

PIP BLOM
SHARE NEW TRACK
‘IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN FUN‘
SECOND ALBUM WELCOME BACK
OUT OCTOBER 8 ON HEAVENLY RECORDINGS

Having recently announced details for the release of their second album, Welcome Break, out on Heavenly Recordings on October 8, 2021, Amsterdam’s Pip Blom have today shared the latest track ‘It Should Have Been Fun’.

Pip Blom speak about new track ‘It Should Have Been Fun’ by saying: “When writing the tracks for the record I wanted there to be a song that didn’t have the structure of verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, chorus 2x. It’s a common structure of course and I figured it could be cool to switch it up a bit. When the track starts it feels like it’s going to be a very sensitive, calm song. The verses capture the feeling of sadness, disappointment in yourself and someone else. But when the chorus starts the energy switches. It’s more angry, being fed up, wanting to change something, like there’s a tipping point. I really like how the track has these different parts that flow into each other. I can’t wait to play this track live and really give it our all when the final chorus hits.”

‘It Should Have Been Fun’ alongside the rest of the album was self-produced and mixed by Caesar Edmunds (PJ Harvey, St Vincent, Queens of the Stone Age) and recorded at Ramsgate’s Big Jelly Studios.

Following an extensive touring schedule, which saw the Dutch 4-piece roam over field, oceans, and Glastonbury’s John Peel stage following the release of their debut record Boat, Pip Blom immediately began to gather all her soaked-up inspirations taken from the road, cosy down in a room of her parent’s house (which she shares with her brother and fellow bandmate Tender Blom) and over three months wrote twenty songs – sixteen of which were to become demos for the band to structure and flesh out, once in the studio together.

With plans slightly complicated by the Covid-19 crisis, the band decamped to their favourite Big Jelly Studios in Ramsgate and after 14-days of quarantine set to work recording their second album over three weeks with engineer Al Harle.

The result, Welcome Break (and yes, the title is inspired by the ubiquitous serviced dotted along Britain’s motorways) resonates with about as much decisive allure as their previous album Boat, but this time with a bit more contemporary chaos to boot.

Where Boat reckoned as a fresh-faced, yet gloriously fearless game-changer, Welcome Break is the self-assured older sibling who, with an additional year or two behind themselves, isn’t afraid to speak out, take lead, and instigate a liberated revolution-come-bliss-out.

Yet another master-class in effortless song-writing and feel-good-chorus’, as Pip explains, the secret behind the continuing run of form on Welcome Break is fairly simple – “I just really like catchy songs and I feel like that’s something we do well. It’s not sugar-coated-happy Pop…they’re more like ‘Titanic’ pop songs…”

PRAISE FOR YOUR GRANDPARENTS

“Breathing fresh energy into a classic sound and familiar feeling”
Atwood Magazine

“Your Grandparents put apparent thought and care into every aspect of their work“

“Nostalgic sonics with their own personal twist”
HYPEBEAST

“Intoxicating”
Ones To Watch

The rising Los Angeles-based R&B/Hip-Hop trio Your Grandparents, composed of vocalists DaCosta, Jean Carter, and producer ghettoblasterman, have released their long-awaited full-length debut album, Thru My Window, available independently on all digital streaming platforms via The Orchard. LISTEN HERE.

On the release of their debut album, Your Grandparents share, “Thru My Window is an alternative commentary on love in early adulthood. Illustrated through the joint perspective of Your Grandparents, the narrative portrays the origins of a budding relationship and its potential complexities.” Thru My Window includes previously released singles ‘Sunlight‘, ‘Tomorrow‘, and ‘So Damn Fly‘, which earned them a highly coveted spot on this year’s upcoming Day N Vegas festival lineup and high praise from the tastemakers like The FADER, HYPEBEAST, Ones to Watch, UPROXX, Notion, Rated R&B, Ladygunn, and more.

Your Grandparents make music that hints to the nostalgia of previous decades without feeling dated. Nor is the trio cemented to just one genre, either. The friends founded Your Grandparents, using the moniker as a nod to the elders who introduced them to classic artists and inspired their musical tastes, in 2014. Originally, the trio released rap music, but their work quickly grew to incorporate the various genres that have inspired their musicianship. When asked about the albums that have inspired them lately, the men rattle off a variety of projects including D’Angelo’s Voodoo, Erykah Badu’s Baduism, The Fugees’ The Score and Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon. Today, Your Grandparents release music that nods to funk, soul, hip-hop, rock, blues and other genres.

Fueled by a recent trip to Paris, ghettoblasterman says the group’s new album Thru My Window is about “the different types of loves that you can encounter.” Far away from their native Los Angeles and experiencing the romantic challenges that come with dating in your early 20s, the three experienced the emotional and musical clarity that allowed them to finish the project in months. It’s their quickest creative endeavour to date. Thru My Window is also the first project where the trio could utilise other musicians and live instrumentation, resulting in their strongest productions to date.

‘So Damn Fly‘, the project’s lead single, is anchored around a psychedelic bassline and electronic guitar licks. The video, directed and produced by Your Grandparents, further displays the 70s era that inspired the single. The video for ‘Tomorrow‘, a song about “pursuing a love interest despite the uncertainty it involves,” borrows from the Blaxploitation films popularized in the same decade. Your Grandparents utilised various recording techniques to get the desired effect for their genre-blending debut album. The group credits their cohesive sound to their years-long friendship, which began when they were each about 13 years old. “Our tastes have kind of combined into one. There’s not a lot of communication on the creation end that has to happen. We just fall into place,” ghettoblasterman says.

Thru My Window is out now, buy/stream it here.

Contrasting the deep, bluesy vocals from Jack Cullen with the dynamic raps of Rxseboy and Allday, the melodic hooks float over a dusty acoustic guitar riff and a bed of hypnotic, low-slung grooves whose snug, intimate appeal has proved one of the most viral of 2021 so far.

Snøw‘s relentless innovation in crafting slyly addictive lo-fi gems has garnered him a growing fan base across international audiences, recently featuring on Kina‘s Platinum-certified record Get You To The Moon. The precocious songwriter continues to establish himself as an artist crafting trailblazing hits with each perfectly executed release. Introducing Allday to the mix is yet another example of his shrewd and carefully considered execution, linking the Australian star up with British crooner Cullen and Powfu collaborator Rxseboy to create a formidable triple threat, each artist bringing their own distinctive flavour to Snøw‘s bedroom pop eden, the range of the collaborative effort never overshadowing ‘Spilled My Coffee‘s core cozy appeal.

Over four studio full-lengths and countless collaborations to date, Allday has carved out a space completely of his own within the Australian hip hop landscape, recognised for his dreamy, nostalgic aesthetics and his artistic versatility, honing an unmatched blend of indie and hip hop influences and an ability to switch seamlessly between soft, ruminative vocals and rap flows, most recently deployed on his Drinking With My Smoking Friends LP, which won swift praise from the likes of Rolling Stone, Clash, NME and was named triple j’s Feature Album. With Allday in tow, Snøw now adds the final piece to his ‘Spilled My Coffee‘ puzzle, keeping the heat high on his unassuming anthem, which, continuing to reach new audiences and constantly finding new life within itself, feels like it’s rapidly approaching a tipping point.

‘Spilled My Coffee ft. Allday, Rxseboy, Jack Cullen‘ is out now,

Brisbane’s Jacinta Lal makes her arrival with debut EP, DIVYA

by the partae July 16, 2021
written by the partae

Following on from the release of her single ‘Self-Discover’, Brisbane hip hop artist Jacinta Lal unleashes her debut collection of material in the DIVYA EP.

The record is an intensely personal one for the young artist: not only is the title part of her name, but its meaning (‘divine’) is one that Jacinta has expanded upon through the music to become synonymous with feminine power and courage.

The EP came together across sessions with engineers Harry Fox and James Angus in Jacinta’s hometown of Brisbane. The six tracks on the DIVYA record capture different elements of Jacinta’s artistry and personal energy – great snapshots of the creative wave she was riding at the time of writing.

Previous singles ‘Self-Discover’, ‘Sheila’ and ‘Personal’ exude the confidence she naturally brings to the mic, while songs like ‘Funky Fierce’ and ‘M.V.P’ have seen Jacinta pour stacks of personality and biting style into each bar.

“To me, DIVYA are the ones who dare to show the world their true colours. DIVYA are the ambitious who fiercely go after their dreams. DIVYA are the strong-hearted. This does not mean they are not vulnerable. To me, DIVYA are the soulful who have been mocked and have felt pain. Lots of it. But DIVYA are the stubborn ones who get up over and over again despite being knocked over every single time before.”
Jacinta Lal

Accompanying the release of the EP, Jacinta shares new visuals for DIVYA track ‘Sheila’. As she says about this song, released near the end of 2020, ‘Sheila’ is for ‘the feisty and courageous boss queens out there.

“The ‘Sheila’ music video brings to life the character of a woman confident in her own skin. Expressed in some parts through dancing, the music video portrays the character ‘Sheila’ to be having a good time being proud of who she is.”
Jacinta Lal

CHVRCHES’ new single ‘Good Girls’ is out now – listen HERE

Premiered as Annie Mac’s Hottest Record on BBC Radio 1

CHVRCHES are playing Splendour XR next weekend

The new album Screen Violence is out 27 August

Today, CHVRCHES have shared their new single ‘Good Girls’, taken from their forthcoming fourth studio album Screen Violence, set for release on August 27. ‘Good Girls’ premiered as Annie Mac’s Hottest Record on BBC Radio 1.

Watch the video for ‘Good Girls’
‘Good Girls’ was the second song the band wrote for the new album, setting the lyrical tone for Screen Violence. Frontwoman Lauren Mayberry’s powerful vocal delivers the unapologetic and vital lyrics on the misogynistic ideals inflicted upon women with urgency: “Good girls don’t cry / And good girls don’t lie / And good girls justify but I don’t / Good girls don’t die / And good girls stay alive / And good girls satisfy but I won’t”.

“The opening line (killing your idols is a chore) was something I wrote after listening to some friends arguing about the present day implications of loving certain problematic male artists – I was struck by the lengths that people would go to in order to excuse their heroes and how that was so juxtaposed to my own experiences in the world. Women have to constantly justify their right to exist and negotiate for their own space. We’re told that bad things don’t happen to Good Girls. That if you curate yourself to fit the ideal – keep yourself small and safe and acceptable – you will be alright, and it’s just not f**king true.”

The video for ‘Good Girls’ is the final in a lo-fi, nostalgic, and analogue-inspired trilogy directed by multi-disciplinary artist Scott Kiernan, following previous singles ‘He Said She Said’ and ‘How Not To Drown’. On the making of the trilogy of videos, director Scott Kiernan says: “The video for ‘He Said She Said’ dealt with doubt in making of one’s own image while under the manipulation of another; while ‘How Not to Drown’ sought an exit from a low, from feeling penned in by larger power structures, and refusing to succumb to them again. But ‘Good Girls’ portrays a certain learned confidence in knowing who and what you are, despite what others might conform to themselves. It’s having a clear vision, or something like a compound eye that can see at all angles. So, like ‘How Not to Drown’ before it, ‘Good Girls’ continues down from a scene in the first video and steers it to a new parallel conclusion. Near the end, we find Lauren spiralling on the studio floor, surrounded by the crew and ghosts of the previous videos, as the entire image cycle finally comes to a halt.”

‘Good Girls’ follows on from previous single ‘How Not To Drown’ featuring one of the band’s musical heroes, The Cure frontman Robert Smith. ‘How Not To Drown’ was released in June alongside the announcement of Screen Violence, and premiered via Zane Lowe. The accompanying official video featured both CHVRCHES and Robert Smith, with its claustrophobic, film-noir imagery a continuation of the aesthetic presented with the album’s debut single ‘He Said She Said’. Following its release, Robert Smith also remixed the single, telling The FADER he wanted his version of the single to “conjure up an irresistible midnight sea with dark mesmeric currents”.

Screen Violence was recorded almost entirely remotely between Los Angeles and Glasgow, members Lauren Mayberry, Martin Doherty and Iain Cook self-produced and mixed the album via video calls and audio sharing programs to create something that is unique and special, but inherently CHVRCHES. The album will be released August 27 2021 – pre-order is available HERE.

Next weekend, CHVRCHES will perform as a part of Splendour XR. Tickets are available for the online festival HERE.

ECHO ADORE return with evocative new single 'SEE RED'

ECHO ADORE return with evocative new single ‘SEE RED’

by the partae July 16, 2021
written by the partae

“Very correct ‘80s indie sound in here. That bass has just shuffled over from the Disintegration sessions.”
Triple J Unearthed, Dave Ruby Howe

“With such elegant lyrics and a chorus as sticky as honey it’s easy to imagine Caught In History absolutely rocking a festival main stage, and that’s exactly where we see Echo Adore heading. The only issue is that you will be left thinking, “Is it over so soon?”, which is genuinely rare for a song with a four minute timestamp.”
Happy Magazine

“I could hear some Australian classics in here and then I looked over at your influences and it all made sense.”
Triple J, Declan Byrne

This July, Echo Adore will be touring ‘See Red’ through WA on a three-date run. Reconnecting with different WA venues is one thing, and bringing their new show and music to audiences again is something the band can’t wait to do.

“We are always excited to be performing to a local Perth audience and we are fortunate to be once again visiting the Southwest region of Western Australia.”
Echo Adore

Perth duo Echo Adore return for 2021 with a powerful new single in ‘See Red’. As the band’s second single (their first for 2021), ‘See Red’ is a fresh statement piece from the indie duo who first turned heads back in 2019 with their debut, ‘Caught In History’.

This single, dripping in great riffs and captivating vocals, shows off the strong writing and performance dynamic between Echo Adore: Damian Diggs and Oliver James. Taken from forthcoming EP Lumière, ‘See Red’ is the first we’re hearing from Echo Adore’s new creative chapter.

Recorded between Pavement and Blackbird Studios in Perth, ‘See Red’ came about as a way for Echo Adore to channel their feelings towards events in the news cycle at the time. The end result is urgent, layered in emotional tone; dealing with feelings of losing control and being overwhelmed.

“There were a lot of violent events on the news during that time and we were trying to navigate that mindset. One particular event inspired Damian to write the lyrics as an internal dialogue. The music and lyrics both began to reflect the anger and vengeance of the character in the song, a story about betrayal and disillusion. It definitely has its own self contained narrative but it can relate to a lot of internal struggles, like anxiety and depression. Trying to fight your way out of a frame of mind.”
Echo Adore

The song is a strong step forward in the group’s evolution. Following the release of  ‘Caught In History’, Echo Adore saw themselves with a Pop Song of the Year nomination at the 2019 WAM Awards – early recognition of their talent and potential. Harnessing that momentum and continuing to thrive, they have become a great force on the local Perth scene.

It's a somber, folky and very lovely song.” – Brooklyn Vegan Fat Wreck Chords and singer-songwriter Joey Cape, frontman of iconic punk band Lagwagon, are excited to release “Saturday Night Fever,” the second single to be lifted from the Friday, August 13 release of his brand new solo LP, A Good Year To Forget. A forlorn-yet-somehow-uplifting track, “Saturday Night Fever” is yet another reflective song on an album that was written during a year that saw Cape lose his father, separate from his wife of 20 years, contract COVID, and move back in with his parents as a result of a livelihood lost. A Good Year To Forget is a warm and beautiful record that encapsulates all the trials and tribulations over those challenging 12 months. Stream “Saturday Night Fever” on YouTube HERE. The time Joey Cape spent with his parents over the past year didn’t just allow him to reconnect with them; it also afforded him time to write songs. Because recording studios were shutting down everywhere due to COVID, Cape got creative and turned the “cabana-type thing” he was living in into a home recording studio. “I just decided that if I was going to make a record like this, I should make it in full isolation,” he says. “I have a Murphy bed, so every morning I’d push up the bed, pull out the studio stuff, have some coffee or tea, get out my little chair and off I went.” Despite Cape’s isolation while writing A Good Year To Forget, his fans will hear much more than just a voice, guitar and bass on this record. Indeed, he ended up playing a plethora of instruments when recording the album, including electric and lap steel guitars, piano, mandolin and drums. LISTEN TO FIRST SINGLE "IT COULD BE REAL" “I almost made a solo record alone,” he laughs. “But that great fun you have in collaborating with other people in the studio is just priceless. There’s always something positive you can find–something of redeeming value in an experience where there’s a struggle of suffering. I played everything because I reached a point where I realised that’s something I’d have to hold onto if it was going to be the record I wanted and set out to make. It forced things to be very basic, but I’m okay with that.” A Good Year To Forget seeks to find the positive in the negatives to become a record of pure triumphant beauty. Hushed and haunted, there’s an almost Nick Drake-ian poignancy to these 12 songs, especially on the wistful “The Poetry Of Our Mistakes” and the forlorn-yet-somehow-uplifting “Saturday Night Fever.” “Come Home,” a song inspired directly by the words his mother had spoken on the phone, is a beautifully melancholic, slightly folky tune full of hurt and longing that also manages to be reassuring at the same time. Elsewhere, “Under The Doormat” is a harrowingly beautiful ode to a lost love of the past. “Check Your Ego At The Door” is a ballroom lament steeped in timelessness, while “Fictional” is a scornful take on the false images and lives that proliferate on social media. “By any standard, 2020 was a bad year,” Cape says. “This record has truly distilled my own experience of the past year, what I've learned and what I've felt. It feels right and I'm very proud of the result.” Fat Wreck Chords will release A Good Year To Forget on August 13, 2021.

Underoath Share Chaotic New Single ‘Damn Excuses’

by the partae July 15, 2021
written by the partae

Underoath has been a formative voice in progressive, heavy rock for almost two decades. Today, they share their blistering new single Damn Excuses out on Fearless Records. This release marks the first new music from Underoath since 2018’s Grammy-nominated full-length, Erase Me, and launches a brand new chapter in the band’s career. Damn Excuses was completely self-recorded and produced at guitarist Tim McTague’s studio, Feral Sound, in Tampa, Florida. It evokes the beautiful chaos that so many fans have found special about Underoath for years while still managing to break through new sonic and emotional boundaries.

Speaking on the track, keyboardist Chris Dudley states: “This song came out of nowhere for us. In hindsight, it probably stems emotionally from the anxiousness that a year of isolation will give you, and that ‘wanting-to-explode’ feeling came out with zero effort. It was therapeutic. This is us ready to get back into a loud room with sweaty people and experience something real together.”

Watch the visualiser for Damn Excuses here:

Damn Excuses was partly inspired by the band’s critically-acclaimed Observatory livestream experience last year. As a global pandemic shook the foundation of the music industry in 2020, interest in the digital consumption of live music began to wane after a few months. With Observatory, Underoath breathed new life into the realm with a complete overhaul of the process – creating something equal parts intimate and monumental. It carried the weight of a sold out arena show translated through vessels consumable in fan’s living rooms. What made it all the more impactful was the fact that the entire initiative was dreamt up and brought to fruition largely by the band’s internal team. Thus, providing another shining reminder of the innovation that the six members of Underoath are capable of pulling together.

This far into their storied career, Underoath has unsurprisingly faced their fair share of adversity. Through the trials and tribulations, a commitment to their craft and a sense of accountability rooted in mutual respect for each other has ensured that each new chapter for the band continues to mould their legacy in a positive fashion. With their shared history of remarkable accolades and trying hardships continuing to shape who the individual members are as people, Underoath is still just scratching the surface of what they can accomplish as a band. There are few acts in the annals of rock history that can say their best work is still ahead of them almost two decades into their career. Fortunately, Underoath falls into that category. As the world opens back up in 2021, the band is deeply committed to living up to the high expectations that fans (and themselves) have come to expect for anything associated with the project. It will undoubtedly be something special to witness as this next chapter in the Underoath story manifests.
