Louwop ‘Ghosts’ Premiere

by the partae September 19, 2023
written by the partae

Canada’s Louwop has dropped his new single “Ghosts”  from his upcoming Latin Hip Hop record “La Ofrenda”.

Representing the migration of music and poetry brought as gifts from immigrants and refugees to cities such as Toronto – Louwop’s lyrics are drawn by his immigrant experience, fuelled by the desire to celebrate his Latino heritage, driven by passion for Hip Hop, and empowered by his community, Louwop bridges the gap between first and second generation migrants of all backgrounds.

Like the poets whose words first painted the social and political landscape of Latin America, Louwop lyrically captures life’s beauty, intensity, anguish and hope from the far flung street corners of his birth country El Salvador to Canada where he found his voice. His is both a personal and universal journey that resonates no matter your language, location or lineage.

Tess Anderson is back with an incredible new track “Self Control”!

Open and unapologetic, she invites listeners into her most vulnerable moments through honest and authentic storytelling. Whether alone on stage with nothing but a keyboard and a guitar, or backed by a full band, she’s been known to silence crowds with her captivating musical presence. Pulling inspiration everywhere from old-school jazz standards to modern pop, her sound is heavily driven by her unmistakable voice.

Growing up in Victoria, BC, Tess’s debut into the music industry began at the rookie age of 12. Training as a vocalist and pianist, she began songwriting as a form of self-expression, finding numerous performance opportunities at a young age. By 15 she had recorded and released a self-produced 7-song album (under a different alias),quickly followed by her first sold-out show and national radio play on CBC. Moving to Vancouver in 2016 to pursue her career further, she received a diploma in songwriting, audio engineering, and music production. Tess went on to sign her first record deal with indie label BCR in 2019, become a finalist in the 2020 Canadian Songwriter Challenge, receive a 2021 Amplify BC Grant for her upcoming project, and build an impressive catalogue of original material.

Cookin’ On 3 Burners Interview

by the partae September 18, 2023
written by the partae

Where are you currently based?

The Cookin’ crew are spread out across inner northern and eastern parts of Naarm/Melbourne.

What’s been happening recently?

We’ve been hard at it pushing the word out for this brand spankin 7 inch vinyl release. Cookin’ On 3 Burners are pretty DIY these days, running their own label Soul Messin’ Records and building on our community of funk and soul lovers worldwide.

How would you describe the band’s sound to a first time listener?

Sweet soul and dirty dancefloor funk.

Your latest single ‘I’m Comin Home To You’ featuring Stella Angelico is out  now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

We wanted to write a stomping soul banger that makes the most of combining our classic organ trio breakbeat sound with Stella’s 60s vocal leanings.

How did you come to work with Stella and how was the experience?

So great! We’ve been collaborating with Stella for the last couple of years live and she totally kills on stage. This new single was an awesome opportunity for us to capture some of that fire on record. The writing process was pretty sweet too, Stella got on a great vibe lyrically and was into all the musical ideas we put forward – we actually got four tracks written and recorded over that period.

What does this single mean to you?

Coming home to where the goodness is – where it’s been all along.

Where and when did you record and who did you work with?

We recorded the guts of this tune live to analog tape at our own Soul Messin’ Studios. Our Hammond organ player Jake Mason was on tracking and mixing duties and we all co-produced it. Once we had the mix feeling sweet, we took it to local legend Lachlan Carrick  for mastering. We had the vinyl pressed in Germany and it’s super warm and punchy.

You’re playing on Friday 15 September at the Northcote Social Club in Melbourne, what can we expect from your show?

We are going to do a banging instrumental funk set and then a full set of vocal tracks with Stella Angelico. We also have the fabulous HAYCH playing support with her new band and PBS FM’s own Miss Goldie holding it down on vinyl duties between sets.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Lotsa local legends Surprise Chef, Menagerie, Izy, Thndo, Steady Weather, Elle Shimada, Joelistics – get across them!

What’s planned for the remainder of 2023 going into 2024?

A hot new full length album, some feature shows and some festival spots.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

Marios Brunswick Street – so old school, so good!

‘I’M COMIN’ HOME TO YOU’ is out now.

DANIEL TRAKELL captivates on new release ‘INTO THE BLUE’ Upcoming sophomore album out later this year

by the partae September 17, 2023
written by the partae

Returning with his second release for 2023, a brand new hint at a new creative phase still to come, Melbourne songwriter Daniel Trakell reveals the latest single from his upcoming album – the dreamy ‘Into The Blue’.

Following on from ‘Folk Song #2’ earlier this year, Trakell continues to take listeners on a journey marked by soulful and melodic notes. ‘Into The Blue’ is a moment of escape for the artist and listener alike; an invitation to jump in and leave everything behind for its 4:40 minute run time.

An absolute dream.

Recorded in Mollonggipp in regional Victoria in an old church hall, ‘Into The Blue’ saw Trakell work with producer and engineer Josh Barber (Gretta Ray, Gotye), as well as GRAMMY winning, JUNO nominated engineer Shawn Hatfield (Betty Who, Neneh Cherry) on mastering.

Inspired after watching the film Into The Wild, Trakell began thinking about lyrics that focused on leaning into the unknown and taking chances.

“Lyrically ‘Into The Blue’ is about escaping and leaving everything behind. The phrase means to disappear into the unknown, vanish or leave without a trace. I had the song for a while, but didn’t quite know how to finish the lyrics.

After re-watching the film Into The Wild (based on the story of Chris McCandless who disappeared into the Alaskan wilderness), the lyrics started to come together in a kind of re-telling of that story which resonates so much with me as it’s a topic I think about a lot. It’s also, I think, quite a hopeful song about taking some kind of risk or leap of faith in life and trusting that things will work out.”  DANIEL TRAKELL

Along with ‘Folk Song #2’, ‘Into The Blue’ was written by Trakell with a full album project in mind.

As part of the first batch of songs written and brought to Barber’s newly renovated studio in Mollongghip, ‘Into The Blue’ captures the energy of the space it was recorded in – the final result wrapped up in a natural warmth and comfort.

“When it’s just me and Josh in the studio together (opposed to working with a full band which is how we recorded the second half of the record) we tend to get down the acoustic guitar and a rough vocal take, then just add instruments and experiment as we feel.

With the first batch of songs we essentially wanted to capture the ambience of the church hall and I feel like ‘Into The Blue’ is the best example of that on the record. Josh  laid down a kind of country style drums and bass which became the backbone of the song before adding some keys and vibraphone.

I did some extra electric guitar stuff, a clarinet part I already had in mind and some mellotron strings in the bridge and outro. Then, Matt Dixon added some beautiful pedal steel on the top which just completed the song perfectly.” DANIEL TRAKELL

Accompanying the release of ‘Into The Blue’, Trakell has also released an official music video – a beautifully captured performance clip, directed by Mike Ridley.

PRAISE FOR DANIEL TRAKELL

“Most often accompanied by his guitar and little else, a Daniel Trakell song is something worth drinking in deeply; the arrangements are gorgeous as are the stories you’ll find within.”

“haunting, melancholic isolation and just off-centre obscurity”

“So many sweet little delicacies to unpack in this one. The sneaky-emotional string arrangement, the delicate glockenspiel, your faultless falsetto. I am charmed.”

“Oasis meets Tobias Jesso Jr.”
GBH Music Magazine

“Daniel Trakell is a name that I’m starring in my notes for the years to come.”
Ear To The Ground Music

The arrival of new material from Trakell in 2023 marks the release of his first music since his 2020 album, Warning Bell.

An accomplished performer who has shared stages with the likes of Didirri, Kyle Lionheart and WILSN, as well as establishing himself as a strong headliner in Melbourne, Trakell knows exactly how to captivate an audience. His music to date has accrued over 4.6 million streams, as well as earning support industry wide from the likes of Rolling Stone Australia, Triple J, FBi Radio, Happy Magazine and more.

With more new music to come, Daniel Trakell is gearing up to his brightest chapter yet. His album is expected to be a sweeping exploration of the nuances of life, perfectly parcelled in his unique brand of loveable indie-folk-rock.

Fans can check him out in Melbourne, launching ‘Into The Blue’ with a free afternoon show at the Lulie Tavern in September.

AMY WINEHOUSE EXHIBITION COMING TO AUSTRALIA

by the partae September 16, 2023
written by the partae

A moment in time with Amy, Before Frank

Marking the 20th Anniversary of Amy Winehouse’ celebrated debut album International Photographer, Charles Moriarty, brings intimate collection to Australia

AUSTRALIA, 13th September 2023 – On the eve of what would have been Amy Winehouse’ 40th birthday, internationally renowned photographer, Charles Moriarty, has announced the Australian tour of ‘Amy, Before Frank’, a personal tribute and intimate collection of timeless photography captured when a young, fresh faced, 19-year-old Amy Winehouse was on the cusp of global stardom.

Back in 2003, when Charles Moriarty was asked by a mutual friend to photograph a local singer by the name of Amy Winehouse, he had no idea of the heights that the honest, self-assured 19-year-old he was introduced to would eventually reach. The Irish photographer ended up shooting the cover for Amy’s debut album, Frank, with the two striking up a friendship that remained close for many years.

Charles Moriarty’s Amy, Before Frank collection features a series of photographs that are fun, mischievous and capture a remarkable period for one of music’s most significant and iconic figures. Moriarty’s photographs are charming, intimate, insightful, and emotional for fans of Amy who have stayed close to her turbulent life journey, and it’s heart-breaking, all too soon, end.

On bringing Amy, Before Frank to Australia, after 20 years since Amy was introduced to the world “it’s time for people to know the girl I knew; Amy before the fame, Amy before Frank” said Charles Moriarty.

Moriarty’s images have quickly made a transition into collective cultural memory, through both the iconic cover for Frank and now at London’s National Portrait Gallery, where one of the images from this exhibit sits in the permanent collection.

Presented by Behind The Gallery, the Amy, Before Frank collection will arrive in Sydney in October, before travelling to Melbourne in November, at a time that also marks the 20th anniversary of her internationally acclaimed debut album, Frank, which was originally released on the 20th October, 2003.

“Charles captured the innocence, honesty, happiness of Amy before the cusp of fame happened.  The trust in the shots of Amy from Charles is based upon friendship and not something we have seen like this before. It’s a side of Amy rarely shown before, and we can’t wait to share it with everyone in Australia”. Said, Stephen Dallimore – Behind the Gallery.

Over 30 images will be featured and on display in Sydney at the m2 Gallery in Surry Hills. The free-of-charge exhibit will be open to the public from the 18th – 22nd October, from 10am – 5pm each day with the opportunity to hear directly from Charles Moriarty who will share personal insights and anecdotes from his time spent with Amy, in person on Saturday 21st October at 12.30pm.

The Amy, Before Frank exhibit will then travel to Melbourne’s @14 Gallery in Collingwood, open to the public from 1st – 5th November, 10am – 5pm each day.  Moriarty will also be hosting an in-person artist talk on Saturday 4th November at 12.30pm.

Jon McCann ‘Too Far From Here’ Premiere

by the partae September 15, 2023
written by the partae
Toronto’s Jon McCann has released an incredible new single “Too Far From Here” – and it is absolutely dreamy!

With a drummer for a father, the die was cast. Born a musician, Jon McCann has served as a drummer with several artists over the years; some notables include Guided By Voices, Tangiers, Blurtonia, 13 Engines and most recently Sarah Harmer. His last song writing efforts culminated in two records with his band Nassau which were released with Outside Music in the early 2000’s; both records offering a Rock and Roll heart with a dash of psychedelic melancholy.

And now, this October 26, Jon McCann is back with ‘Too Far From Here’. Recorded over the fall of 2021 into the winter of 2022 in Toronto at the cozy Lincoln CountySocial Club, with John Dinsmore at the helm. ‘Too Far From Here’ takes twists and turns like a long drive in a 1979 Mercury Cougar; built for comfort not for speed. Inspired by equal parts The Byrds, Neil Young and The Jesus and Mary Chain, ‘Too Far From Here’ plays like an old movie in its own genre ‘Cosmic Western Noir’.

| LOADED BILLY | ADELAIDE BASED HEAVY ROCKERS RELEASE HIGHLY ANTICIPATED DEBUT ALBUM ‘LEGEND’ + ANNOUNCE LAUNCH SHOW

by the partae September 12, 2023
written by the partae
Adelaide based classic Hard Rock/Stoner Rock outfit Loaded Billy have released their highly anticipated debut album called ‘Legend’, which was premiered via Metal Roos.

The band have also announced that they will be playing a launch show at The Gov in Adelaide on 23rd September.

The record is a true album listening experience from start to finish, embodying the spirit of classic Rock records from the 70’s and 80’s.

“The record could be conceived as a semi-conceptual story; much is based around the tale of a boy and a girl who both left their country upbringing for the promise of a better life in the big city. Better life…well, that’s not necessarily what happens. They are two different people who don’t know each other yet their stories are connected in both tragedy and love.”

Loaded Billy have had a massive year so far. Earlier this year the band released their explosive single and music video called ‘Boys Run Wild’, which was the first offering from their debut album. The release was premiered via The Rock Pit and received airplay on radio stations across the globe.

The band then followed up with the release of single ‘Scarlet’. The single and accompanying video were premiered via Hysteria Mag and once again gained rotation on radio stations all around the world.

New album ‘Legend’ is available now on all major streaming services.

Hot Glue Interview

by the partae September 12, 2023
written by the partae

Where are you currently based?

We are from Melbourne, Australia!

How did the band form?

Lily and Pearl met at the hospital just after Pearl popped out of the womb – we’re sisters! Henry joined the band on drums a couple of years ago after we’d been playing with a range of different drummers and is now very much a part of Hot Glue, the band wouldn’t be the same without him.

What’s been happening recently?

We just released our debut album ‘Hatchet’! The whole process has been super exciting, including making our first music video for ‘Roadkill’ as well as launching it with a show at The Gasometer. The album has been a long time coming so it has been really awesome to finally share it with everyone.

Your debut album ‘Hatchet’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

Thematically the album focuses on forgiveness in its many forms; grudges, apologies, burying the hatchet. We realised halfway through recording that the whole album was about forgiveness as we’d unintentionally been writing about it for the last few years. Sonically we’re very attached to our fuzzy guitars and sisterly harmonies, possibly brought on by our love of The Breeders. While recording we tried out different sounds but always found ourselves drifting back to how we play it live with our simple three piece.

How did you go about writing Hatchet?

‘Hatchet’ is made up of songs we wrote over time after releasing our debut EP as well as a couple of other singles. Once we had about seven songs, we decided to turn them into an album and realised the songs we were writing were mostly about some form of forgiveness or resentment. We went into writing the last couple songs for the album with this in mind. Some of the songs we would write individually then bring to the band, or would be written together.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with?

We recorded ‘Hatchet’ at Hothouse Audio with our dad Craig Harnath who also mixed and mastered the album.

How did you approach the recording process?

Pretty much all of the songs we had been playing live for quite some time before we went to record them. We enjoyed coming up with new ideas and parts for the recordings, but ultimately kept them pretty close to the way we play them live. We love crunchy, fuzzy guitars and really embraced this on the record. Recording this album with our dad was really special, we already all hang out together a bunch so it was fun to make a record at the same time!

What does this album mean to you?

It feels amazing to have a full piece of work out in the world, especially one we love as much as Hatchet. Releasing feels like permission to forgive, be forgiven and move on. The songs are so cathartic for us, to play live and to have recorded, so it feels like an immense relief to finally have it out in the world.

Craig Harnath is the father of the two sister vocalists within the band, Craig has worked with loads of big bands over the years (Jet, Kylie Minogue etc) how has this musical connection affected your music and the band?

We’ve been really lucky to grow up in a family where music is celebrated, it’s always been such a big part of our lives and so many albums our parents love have soundtracked our childhood and influenced our own songwriting. Playing music has always been encouraged by our dad, but he very much allowed us to find our own path to starting a band.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Some bands we’re loving at the moment are Juice Webster, Alex G, Slow Pulp and Noah and the Coldmen.

(Here’s a link to our current favs playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0i6yft1BV9ehNSeHgpTrEU?si=28c0033227bc473f)

What’s planned for the remainder of 2023 going into 2024?

We have a couple of shows lined up around Melbourne on September 22nd supporting Ally Mac at The Catfish, on September 29th supporting Noah and the Coldmen at Mamma Chen’s and on September 30th supporting Carla Geneve at The Night Cat. We’re also planning to release another music video for one of the songs off the album very soon.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

Northside we LOVE the burgers at The Retreat, especially pre-show. And we are also devoted patrons of The Banff in St Kilda and thoroughly enjoy their pizzas.

Zomboy’s 1st single of 2023 – experimental 1st step into new genre (out on Rott N’ Roll)

by the partae September 9, 2023
written by the partae

Artist: Zomboy
Title: Monsters (feat. Micah Martin)
Label: Rott N’ Roll Records

Download / Stream

British bass maestro Zomboy joins forces with the vocalist Micah Martin of The Zealots band for their powerful new single “Monsters,” delivering an unexpected and unique sonic experience that’s about to be the soundtrack to everything from your workouts to your next headbanging session. The head of Rott N’ Roll Records artfully fuses angsty vocals that bring to mind hardcore rock of the early aughts with drum & bass production, complete with rapid-fire breakbeats, dark synths, and distorted basslines. The overall effect is an energetic, cathartically aggressive record that brings the listeners’ inner “Monsters” to the surface to be slayed and will appeal to fans of heavy metal, bass music, and beyond as a track that is truly unbound by any genre. It also serves as a follow-up to Zomboy‘s “Dead Man Walking Pt. 1” EP and his earlier collaboration with Micah – “Flatlined,” both from 2022. Read on for the artist’s inspiration behind “Monsters,” which represents Zomboy‘s sonic exploration and sets the tone for future experimentation with bass music.

“I am beyond excited to put ‘Monsters‘ out into the world along with my amazingly talented friend Micah Martin. Not only has this song been absolutely destroying the dance floor, but it will forever symbolize a very difficult yet positive part of my life. Everyone deals with their ups and downs in different ways, and I am just so glad I could call on Micah to help me vocalize these feelings and emotions. I really hope everyone enjoys my first real step into drum & bass, something I’ve wanted to do for a long, long time.” – Zomboy

Zomboy

Zomboy, originally from a small village in England, transitioned from drumming in rock and metal bands to pioneering in the electronic music scene. A car accident settlement funded his home studio, leading to his role as an engineer for numerous bands and his intensive music studies at the ACM in London. His talent was recognized by SKisM, the founder of Never Say Die Records after Zomboy uploaded two demo tracks to SoundCloud on a whim. Rapidly, he graced stages from London‘s Ministry Of Sound to EDC Las Vegas and saw his tracks like “Terror Squad” (2013) and “Like A Bitch” (2016) gain massive acclaim. With 750M streams and multiple placements in the Beatport Top 100, Zomboy is praised for his “cinematic violence” and meticulous approach to music. In 2022, he launched Rott N’ Roll Records, underscoring his significant industry influence. From his modest beginnings to leading the dubstep scene, Zomboy is both a dedicated artist and a relentless innovator.

Micah Martin

Micah Martin was born June 27, 1992, in the Quad Cities. Growing up, he always knew that he wanted to entertain/perform in front of the masses. This would later come to fruition, as he would go on to perform his music in front of sold-out crowds at The Hollywood Palladium, Red Rocks, Spring Awakening, and Lost Lands, to name a few. If he’s not busy writing rock’n’roll anthems with his band – The Zealots, you can find him crafting up his own style of alternative pop in his studio. You might recognize his voice if you play Fortnite or Rocket League, as his songs are in frequent rotation within those games. In 2020, Martin got his first cut with Don Diablo, Imanbek, and Trevor Daniel. This song is called “Kill Me Better,” and it has gotten international radio play all over the world. Travis Barker would later remix “Kill Me Better” and add his own alternative flare to the song. Micah has also worked with some of the biggest names in dance music, such as Jauz, Kayzo, SLANDER, Brooks, Rebelion, Dirty Palm, Bear Grillz, Black Tiger Sex Machine, William Black, Fairlane, Crystal Skies, Ghastly, Frank Zummo, PhaseOne, and more. In 2022 Martin completed his debut album with Executive Producer Felmax.

Sam Blacky is back with her latest tech-house masterpiece, “Salvador,” which rounds out her newest “Bogota” EP with its predecessors, July’s “Munca” and namesake “Bogota” from April. Opening with shimmering melodies and deep, undulating progressive basslines, Sam begins to weave her sonic magic with layers of percussive instrumentals and a muted, tribal vocal riff that’s bound to bring on the goosebumps during a live set. Blacky is a master at using music to transport her listeners to the exotic locales that fuel her inspiration, and “Salvador” continues her love affair with Afrobeats, tribal rhythms, and Latin melodies, making for a sultry track that evokes raves in the deep jungle fringed by a sparkling blue sea and white sand beaches. “Salvador” will no doubt be making appearances during Sam‘s frequent live performances worldwide, so listen up!

“Travel has been my biggest inspiration since I started my journey in the dance music scene. Immersing myself in different cultures and being around people from all around the world has given me the tools to go into the studio and make music that resonates with my soul. ‘Salvador‘ and all the tracks on the ‘Bogota‘ EP capture all the feels from my travels these past 12 months – and shines a light on rhythms and sounds that have stayed with me and made me who I am today. Enjoy!” – Sam Blacky

Townes ‘Shadows’ Premiere

by the partae September 9, 2023
written by the partae

Townes (aka Matt Radich) is one of Nicolas Cage’s only genuine fans, a cynic with a dry wit, and also a recording artist film-maker. If asked to describe his music, he might laugh and say “it’s just bad”, but that would be unsurprising as one could find a lot more self-deprecating humour within his music. With a series of home-recorded EP releases to his name and several new studio singles, Townes has found an addictive middle point between indie-rock and pop. Combining stellar songwriting and nostalgic late-00’s production, he draws on influences from Beck, Hot Chip, and Diamond Rings.

Radich has spent several years perfecting his live shows in small- to mid-size venues. Along with headlining his own shows, he’s supported acts such as Holy Fuck, Zola Jesus, and many others. Townes engages his audiences with the might of a four-piece band, incorporating set pieces and manually programmed lights, despite being a solo act. Radich’s upcoming EP “Ghostwriters” continues his journey to blend music and visuals, while doubling down on the comedic elements of his music. With an accompanying short-film of the same name, “Ghostwriters” tells the story of two songwriters who are kidnapped and tortured in order to write a comeback hit for a popstar going through a public scandal.

Nighteyes Moody New Single, In The Wake, Premiere

Nighteyes is premiering her new single In The Wake ahead of its release to all digital stores tomorrow, February 16th 2023.

A dark ballad fusing acoustic guitars with evocative strings and synths, In The Wake explores the themes of climate change and catastrophe, imagining a post-apocalyptic world dealing with the fall out of industrialisation. In her own words:

“When I began to write this track back in 2014, the image in my mind was of a burning shore with choking smoke blocking out the sun, collapsing cliffs and fire all around. I wanted to create a mourning song that evokes the sense of helplessness that a lot of us feel when faced with the environmental catastrophes we’re facing today. The protagonist is on the water, looking back to a dead land that’s beyond repair. In the first verse, they’re beginning to realise the extent of the damage done, to the second verse inviting the listener to ‘let go’, to move away from the idea of saving the land they’re leaving behind. With the repeating lines in the chorus, the lyrics evoke a sense of disbelief, and how powerless we feel as individuals when faced with these huge world-wide issues”.

The aural listening experience of In The Wake opens with a menacing low rumble, evoking the catastrophe that precedes the song. A repeating pattern on the acoustic guitar weaves in with strings synth lines to create the perfect backing for Trainor’s haunting vocal melodies, bringing to mind the vocal stylings of Chelsea Wolfe, Emma Ruth Rundle and Lana Del Ray.

Trainor began the recording process for In The Wake while in between tours with other projects throughout 2021 and 2022, completing the final instrumentation in late 2022 in her home studio. “Although the instrumentation for this song is fairly simple, getting the right combination of instruments and parts for this track has been an interesting ride, and I thank my producer and partner Drew Handcock (Honeybone, Divine Wave) for his hard work in helping me to realise what I was hearing in my head”.

Nighteyes is tying the release of In The Wake to coincide with the opening weekend of The Defiant at Adelaide Fringe, a contemporary circus show that the song features in which Trainor is the sole musician for. Trainor explains “In The Wake is perfect for The Defiant, as the show takes place in a post-apocalyptic world, with the song evoking the catastrophe that took place before the show starts. It’s interesting because although the song was written a long time before the show was created, it was a perfect match for what we were trying to create with the show. While lyrically the song is quite bleak, during the live rendition of the track in the show the acrobats are coming together for an ‘around the fire’ moment, showing human connection during hard times is really important’

700 Feel, the cult-followed, guided by feeling, electronic partnership of Jonny Reebok and Myspacejuan today unveils Volume 1 of their double EP series Muscle Memories. Complete with video by Harry Welsh for ‘GREEN N’ GREY (feat. Archie Mike)‘. LISTEN + WATCH HERE.

Through Muscle Memories Volume 1, 700 Feel manifests their diligent attention to genre – de-constructed and meticulously studied one beat at a time – remoulded into their own cultivation. Unravelling their purview of patience and growth through experimentations of instrumentation that are never-the-same, spooled in a 700 Feel specific imprint. Muscle Memories is bound by their spirited purpose in the sanctity of kinship, meditation and reflection side by side with side by side with their own stories and experiences abroad and at home with the universally understood insular and communal. Ruminating thematically on the double entendre of its title, Volume 1 of the series presents a deep excavation of their ability to manipulate tension, space and the intensity of feeling to ruminate on the strength that comes with perseverance.

Most notably through the opening ‘GREEN N’ GREY (feat. Archie Mike)’ whose experience directly encapsulates the “muscle memories” sentiment. Incarcerated for the last four years, including time spent during the pandemic, on ‘GREEN N’ GREY’ Archie speaks to loss, watching life pass by and human connection via spoken word. As their childhood friend, his feature on ‘GREEN N’ GREY’ arrived in 700 Feel’s lap as a demo recorded on a jail phone from a mutual friend. Without prior conversation, they communicate his feelings of loss and endurance through sparse backing instrumentation. Low end that simmers from ear to ear with every sigh, every deep breath, preluded by sombre horns. Archie Mike poignantly celebrates Muscle Memories’ Volume 1 with his own release day from life behind bars.

A stark contrast to the triumphant tone of their earlier releases ‘BRIDGES GET BURNT’ and the skiffling, ‘FAMILAR FLAVOURS’, Archie shares “The lyrics to this song were written in a pretty deep place of loss and isolation. I remember using Bruno Mars’ “Locked out of Heaven” as inspiration for the melody and I wanted to depict a sense of calling out from another world that I was isolated in. It depicts the profundity of the stories we create through our lives, and holding onto those indescribable moments of quietness that come where our thoughts are clearest. In that quietness, there’s a deep urge to call out, to see if anyone’s out there. The beautiful thing is there are people out there, that feel you. The amalgamation of minds, spirits, feelings and sounds is what brought this song together and proves the ever-elusive experience of connection manifested from our deepest and most isolated experiences.”

‘GREEN N’ GREY’s germination highlights just how 700 Feel weave their own stories and experiences abroad and at home with the universally understood, insular and communal in their creative partnership. Of their relationship and nature of collaboration on ‘GREEN N’ GREY’, 700 Feel explain “We knew him as just a kid before he went in and he’s always been a musician at heart. He was taught to play guitar by another inmate and then kept teaching himself by listening to King Krule. The guitar gave him a way to express himself and write songs. One day when some friends visited him, he sang some lines he wrote through the phone. That recording ended up with us and inspired us to write a two of the tracks off Vol 1.”

Of the process, Archie continues “I remember singing it over the jail phone with no idea where it would go or if anything would ever be done with it. A couple years passed and my brothers 700 Feel had put it together with their own sound, and I remember it rocking me to my core. They really kept every intention I had with the pads, maintaining the raw phone vocal sound. It was one of those songs that came together in a strangely perfect way, where none of us had a plan for this when we created our parts to the song, but when it was put together it was made complete.”

700 Feel is an experience of sound, sight and sense, with Muscle Memories serving as the vessel for their virtuosity fully established. Volume 1 reveals what they consider “the real beginning of the exploration of our sound,” including a second feature from Archie Mike on ‘AIN’T SHIT CHANGED’ alongside pieces of field recordings from time spent outside (‘STROLL THRU MALVERN HILLS’) and overheard public transport conversations (‘CDG TO GLICHY’) and freestyle piano chord progressions from Jonny’s father Stu (‘PLAY WHATEVER YOU WANT’ and ‘12 AM ON ERASMUS BRIDGE’). With Volume 2 due later this year, Muscle Memories’ first half invites listeners to pause, relish their surroundings, and consider what comes to mind. Including the earlier single ‘FAMILIAR FLAVOURS‘, praised by The Guardian for their “remarkable talent for controlling chaos” amongst Spotify playlisting in Fresh Finds (Global) and Experimental, Genre Glitch, Night Shift, Bleeps^glitches, Quirktronica and more alongside support from Pilerats, Music Feeds, FBi Radio, 2SER and SYN. 700 Feel are destined to transcend.

COOKIN’ ON 3 BURNERS return with ‘I’M COMIN’ HOME TO YOU’ Featuring STELLA ANGELICO

by the partae September 5, 2023
written by the partae

Cookin’ On 3 Burners are back, baby. Returning with a brand new track that puts not only their divine brand of funk and soul music, but the wonderful vocal talents of Stella Angelico, to the fore, the Melbourne group drops ‘I’m Comin’ Home To You’.

The single, a fitting follow on from ‘Wind Up’ (released in June), is a gorgeous and rich offering that yearns musically, as it does lyrically, to wrap itself around you with its warmth. ‘I’m Comin’ Home To You’ is a Cookin’ On 3 Burners masterclass – blending strong production with an innate grasp on influence and a core sonic identity that has established them as a globally renowned unit.

Recorded at the group’s Soul Messin’ Studios in Melbourne, ‘I’m Comin’ Home To You’ was mixed by CO3B’s Jake Mason, and mastered by Lachlan Carrick (Gotye, C.W. Stoneking). And along with the talents of Mason on piano, tenor and baritone saxophone, Dan West on guitar and Ivan Khatchoyan on drums and percussion, the track also features Rohan Wallis on trumpet and Raleigh Williams on additional vocals.

Of their new track, CO3B say ‘I’m Comin’ Home To You’ is about what it offers on the title – a certified soul stomper that is about returning home to get what you need. Says vocalist Angelico of the new track, working with CO3B on this was a no-brainer.

“As soon as I heard this one, I knew I wanted to write on it. It conjured images of water sparkling in the sun, bright blue skies, riding a bike on a warm night. I was thinking of Sicily, I was thinking of Melbourne, where I’ve grown up and feel most at home – and where we chose to shoot the gorgeous, very domestic cover shots with Jo Duck. I was thinking of coming home to someone you love, coming home to yourself…”
STELLA ANGELICO

The track highlights the ease of dynamic that exists between Angelico and Cookin’ On 3 Burners; an easy energy exchange that has led to the formation of a striking live presence together, and continued collaborations in the studio. With more new music on the way, ‘I’m Comin’ Home To You’ is a beautiful addition to what has become an impressive catalogue of music for Cookin’ On 3 Burners.

With over five million monthly listeners to their name on Spotify, membership on APRA AMCOS’ exclusive 1,000,000,000 List (‘This Girl’), as well as an unshakeable level of respect as a live band not just in Australia, but around the world, Cookin’ On 3 Burners have never waned in their relevance or impact.

Having taken their brand of funk and soul throughout Europe, the U.K. and Japan, not to mention confirming their status as favourites on the Australian festival scene at the likes of Queenscliff, Port Fairy and Sydney Festivals; supporting the likes of Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings and Fat Freddy’s Drop, the group has endeared themselves to thousands.

“The Burners music and feel and the way I work are very complimentary  – in fact I think we energise each other on stage, and so I’ve just continued to say yes to joining them, all over the world! “

“It is really exciting to be sharing something totally fresh and new with the world; something that is a real  collaboration between the Burners and myself.  I love it and can’t wait to share it.”
