NEW HOODOO GURUS VINYL 7″ SINGLE & MACH SCHAU DELUXE DIGITAL EDITION!

by the partae May 27, 2020
written by the partae

The Hoodoo Gurus will release their latest single – “Answered Prayers” – as a VERY limited edition 7″ on June 12.  At the same time they will digitally release an expanded Deluxe Edition of their 2004 album Mach Schau, which will combine the track listings from both the local and US editions in a new 16 track running order.

“Answered Prayers”, which the Gurus performed live in front of a huge national audience on last Friday night’s episode of  The State Of Music  and which is already available digitally, is the first new music from the band in 10 years, not counting 2014’s Gravy Train, a newly-recorded EP of lost tracks from the band’s early days. It is the first recording to feature “new” drummer Nik Rieth, who joined in 2015, following time served with The Celibate Rifles, New Christs and Tumbleweed, as well as Radio Birdman, with whom he still plays.

“Answered Prayers” is a stark and visceral track addressing a certain type of abuse propagated by a particular type of male. It’s also a reminder of the Gurus’ raw power and their roots in the original punk rock of the ’70s. Indeed the track follows the release of both old and new material by The Victims, the band that head Guru Dave Faulkner formed with drummer James Baker in Perth in 1977, some four or so years before the pair reunited in Sydney to form the Gurus.

“Song of the Year”, which will feature on the single’s B-side, further emphasises the band’s punk roots. Written and sung by guitarist Brad Shepherd, the flat-out screamer of a song obliquely references in its chorus two of Brisbane’s legendary punk-era bands, The Fucken Leftovers and The Survivors. Brad, of course, fronted his own groups as a teenager in Brisbane at the time, beginning with The Aliens, who evolved into the legendary Fun Things.

Oh, and did we mention the band that Gurus bassman Rick Grossman and former Gurus drummer Mark Kingsmill attempted to get off the ground with Radio Birdman’s Deniz Tek, before Radio Birdman started? Talk about punk rock roots…

“Song of the Year” will also appear on the digital Deluxe Edition of Mach Schau. Left off the original Australian release in 2004, it was one of a handful of tracks added to the US edition of the album at the expense of a couple from the local edition. The new digital release will include all tracks from both editions – plus a couple of tracks, “This Is Your Time” and “Keep It Alive”, that were B-sides on a CD single – in a new, improved running order. None of these extra tracks have ever been available for streaming anywhere in the world, and many were previously unreleased in Australia.

Mach Schau was the first album the Gurus recorded after their five-year hiatus starting in 1998 and is one of their very best. Co-produced by another veteran of Perth’s feisty late-‘70s punk scene Kim Salmon, it features cracking tunes like “Sour Grapes”, “Girls On Top”, “Domino”, “When You Get to California” (with guest Vicki Peterson of The Bangles) and the great single “Nothing’s Changing My Life”, which surprisingly featured the decidedly non-punk – but classic ’70s – pair of Venetta Fields and Renee Geyer on backing vocals.

Mach Schau Deluxe Edition track listing:
1. “Sour Grapes”
2. “Domino”
3. “Nothing’s Changing My Life”
4. “The Good Son”
5. “When You Get to California”
6. “This One’s for the Ladies”
7. “Girls on Top”
8. “Dead Sea”
9. “Monkey’s Wedding”
10. “#17”
11. “Isolation”
12. “White Night”
13. “Song of the Year”
14. “The Mighty Have Fallen”
15. “Chop”
16. “Penelope’s Lullaby”

HOODOO GURUS’ “ANSWERED PRAYERS”/”SONG OF THE YEAR” Limited Edition 7″ vinyl release and MACH SCHAU DELUXE EDITION digital release are both out
Friday June 12.

With the help of his friends around the globe, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs offers 'I Can Hear the Birds', a four track ambient EP written and recorded during the first weeks of isolation. The EP features and was inspired by the sounds of birds heard singing louder than ever during the silence of the lockdowns. What began as a series of musical greeting cards from Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs to isolated friends has evolved into a unique project that explores the intersection of human connection and the planet's regeneration, out now on I OH YOU / Liberator Music. In the words of Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, known as Orlando Higginbottom to some…. On 22nd March a friend sent me a recording of the birds that were keeping her awake in the Canary Islands. It was early in this story and anxiety was high, so I took the recording and made some music to it as a present to send back, a hug, and an exercise to take my mind off the obvious. The next day I spoke to a friend in South London who like many of us was commenting on the volume of the birdsong in his garden, so I asked for a recording of that too, and he woke at dawn the next day and sent me blackbirds, house sparrows, and a great tit. I sent him music a day or two later. Working on my existing musical projects was proving difficult and so this pattern of receiving bird recordings from friends and sending them back songs emerged as a welcome practice.  On 15th April my friend Jon Wright of Sports Banger, aware of my project, showed me a drawing a kid had done on the letter Boris Johnson had sent out to every UK household. On it were colourful birds and “bum face boris bollocks”. Also the words “I can hear the birds again”. So I took that as a sign that I should finish this music, and release it as an EP called “I can hear the birds”.  The artwork is a painting by Jethro Buck, my pal who got up early in Brockley and recorded for me. We’ve known each other since we were 5. I’ve always hoped we’d get an opportunity to collide our worlds one day. I did 8 tracks in total, from Delhi, Nairobi, New York.. there are 4 on this EP, because 4 feels like the right amount.  Thanks to the people who sent me recordings, you know who you are xxxx Relieved of the uncertainty revolving around his current projects Orlando set out to stitch, arrange, and stretch each recording in its own unique way. At times the originally captured frequencies shape the final song and in other cases they are allowed to lose their form completely. The result is a fifteen minute confluence of organic tones and space aged synth work, an aural hug for his friends and fans on the earth slowed down.   Raised on classical music and interested in sampling field recordings early in his career, the value of noise and notes has become near equal to Orlando. Self recordings of train stations and airports can be uncovered as the landing pads for many of his productions, inspired by music concrete pioneers like Luc Ferrari and Daphne Oram through to the more tonal world of Eno's "Thursday Afternoon".   Whether the birds have reclaimed their song or the static of human life has subsided just enough to pay attention, 'I Can Hear The Birds' offers a moment to appreciate the chorus of the natural world that was and will be.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?list=PLuRPOhcmsEFzhOWRMkuKxAYX1yRhNVbZ0&time_continue=1&v=7BPfDYtX9hU&feature=emb_title Facebook | Twitter | Instagram

UKIYO ANNOUNCES NEW SINGLE AND VIDEO ‘GOOD ENOUGH’ FEAT. MARIBELLE

by the partae May 27, 2020
written by the partae

Thrilling multi-instrumentalist and producer, Perth’s Ukiyo returns today with his entrancing new single Good Enough featuring Maribelle – a modest change of pace from the lofi electronic records of his Mixtape series, Ukiyo has produced a sensational blend of ambient indie-tronica and synth-driven future pop.  The track is perfectly complemented by a hypnotic video that will take the viewer on a mesmerising journey into a ravaged world, where the video seeks to compare a doomed relationship within the lyrics of the song to the state of the earth – exploring the daunting idea of humans doing the bare minimum to get by – taking on the ‘good enough’ attitude.

Inspired by artists like Mac Miller, Porter Robinson and Bonobo, Good Enough is a synth-laden masterpiece with a bouncing melody, and offers an uplifting take on a relationship that is going nowhere. Maribelle croons in that lively, soulful vocal she’s best known for – “Falling out of love.  If we give it up, give it up.  At least we know that this was good enough.”

Offering insight into the song, Ukiyo says,“For me, Good Enough is all about being happy with what you have. I’m a person that struggles to keep my mind away from thinking about what ‘could’ve’ or ‘should’ve’ instead of focusing on reality. This track came about at a time that was very much a turning point for me with how I chose to view the world. I think it’s an important message for people to hear, especially in a time like now.”

Working with production company Blacklake who have made clips for OTR, Shallou, Martin Garrix and more, Ukiyo explains how the video for Good Enough came about, saying, “Some of the most common things I hear about my music is it’s a great soundtrack for travelling & adventuring.  I guess that makes a lot of sense with all the vlogs and videos I’ve seen it combined with.  At its core I think those two things represent movement & escape, which is what this video and the ones that come after represent.  It’s pretty difficult to make a conventional music video in the current times, but the situation has opened my eyes to things I might not have usually tried.  I had some basic concepts I knew I wanted to explore in the videos which I took to Blacklake and they made them a hundred times cooler.”

This is a 23 year old with a clear vision for his art, and an impressive host of accolades to hang his hat on.  Will Smith and Casey Neistat borrow his songs for vlogs, US pop star Pharrell Williams and Dutch DJ Martin Garrix added him to their playlists – it’s promotion that money can’t buy and thanks to some big name fans, Perth’s own Timothy Arnott has amassed near on 30 million streams, and landed syncs with big brands like American Eagle, Ripcurl, Microsoft, Volkswagon, HBO and Netflix for the relatively small handful of electronic songs he’s released under his Ukiyo moniker.

And with his LP completed and set for release later this year, Ukiyo drops some exciting info on exactly why we should be prepping ourselves for a killer debut album, enthusing, “I’m absolutely in love with the Australian music scene, so in the unique position I’m in as a producer, I knew I wanted my album to be a showcase of some of the incredible talent we’ve got here.  These singles and the album are as Australian as it gets with production (obviously), and all features, mixing, mastering and artwork all done by Aussies.”

Ukiyo’s decision to release his tunes despite Covid-19 wreaking havoc on the global music industry was a no brainer, explaining, “There were talks within my team about delaying this music because of the virus and I’ve seen so much of that happening, but I think it’s times like these where we need music to help us through. All the tracks on this album were made at times when I was by myself. I find it’s the only way I can make what I perceive as a ‘Ukiyo’ song, so I think it’s a little poetic that a lot of people are going to be stuck listening to it by themselves too.”

Ukiyo is Tim Arnott.

Good Enough is released today on Pack Records.

Today, Australia's notorious pub-punk kingpins Private Function have announced a new label deal with Damaged for the band's impending 2020 LP release, with marketing and distribution handled by Caroline Australia. SONGS FROM NORTHERN TORRANCE

SHARE “HOUSE WARNING PARTY”

Acclaimed California-based four-piece Joyce Manor have announced Songs From Northern Torrance. The 10-track compilation is a collection of early material that offers a glimpse into the band’s humble beginnings as an acoustic two-piece. Originally recorded between 2008-2010, many of the tracks have become fan favorites over the years previously existing in a live setting, or on rare CD-Rs sold by the band during their early days on the road.

The newly remastered tracks will be available on streaming services this Friday, May 29 and on vinyl September 18. The vinyl is currently available for pre-order here.

STREAM / PRE-ORDER SONGS FROM NORTH TORRANCE

Today, the band shares “House Warning Party,” a one-minute blast of upbeat suburban angst.  “A lot of early Joyce Manor songs are actually leftovers from earlier bands, but ‘House Warning Party‘ was the first song I wrote specifically for Joyce Manor,” explains vocalist Barry Johnson. “I was working at the Long Beach Aquarium and the first line of the song came to me while I was perusing the vending machine on my break. They had some LifeSavers and on the packaging it said ‘five flavors’ and the opening line of the song just popped in my head. The rest of the lyrics came effortlessly and the song was fully written in about the time it takes to listen to. Listening to it ten years later it sounds young and inspired and I’m impressed at how much of a story I was able to tell in just over a minute.”

TATYANA Announces debut EP Shadow On The Wall Shares title track & video

by the partae May 27, 2020
written by the partae
Praise for TATYANA

“a lushly produced pop single” – The FADER

“Tatyana and her harp have always been a package deal and for good reason—together, they are magical.” – Office Magazine

“weightless pop vocals underpinned by her harp and lush, soupy synths.” – Crack Magazine

“a celestial combination of Lorde and Christine and the Queens” – tmrw Magazine

“between Kate Bush, Bjork, and Tears For Fears … there’s also something vividly original at work.” – CLASH

“crafts a shimmering blend of pared-down beats, swirling, ethereal pop and wistful poeticism that makes for a truly transcendental listen.” – London In Stereo

Emerging U.K.-based singer, producer and harpist TATYANA has today shared her bewitching new track ‘Shadow On The Wall’ on Sinderlyn – sister label to Captured Tracks. TATYANA has also detailed her debut EP – also Shadow On The Wall – for release on  July 17. Preorder/presave HERE.

Born to English and Russian parents, TATYANA debuted with the stunning ‘Wild Card’ in March and has gone on to draw acclaim everywhere from The FADER and CLASH to Crack Magazine and NYLON – who premiered TATYANA’s self-directed ‘Shadow On The Wall’ lyric video today. TATYANA recently performed a virtual show for Baby’s All Right live on Baby TV and for Dork’s Homeschool – which received over 200,000 unique visitors over the weekend of 8-10 May.

Speaking about new track ‘Shadow On The Wall’, TATYANA added “‘Shadow On The Wall’ is a digital love letter. With this song and lyric video I wanted to explore sincerity in the age of internet romance. It’s everything I can’t say in a text or a message.”

In 2018, classically-trained harp player TATYANA walked into an underground rave in London. Thrilled by the sense of community that drove the party, she made it a goal to play her own music in this kind of environment some day. No surprise, that’s exactly what she did the following year. It’s not the kind of show one might expect an artist with her background to play, but this is how things happen in TATYANA’s world – her moves seem surprising until you realize they’ve made perfect sense all along.

TATYANA lived in Holland, Russia, Singapore, and Boston – where she attended Berklee College of Music on a full scholarship – before settling back in her hometown of London in 2017; the transient nature of her upbringing has certainly informed her music. From underground raves to viral YouTube covers to playing harp on tour with Neneh Cherry, there seems to be no scene that she doesn’t thrive in. Her new music is a multi-faceted product of all of that experience, the kind of precisely produced, impossibly catchy pop that takes other artists entire careers to nail.

It makes sense, considering all of this, that when asked to describe her music, TATYANA picks a color instead of a sound. She chooses the color blue, for the sense of peaceful melancholy that underpins even her most upbeat tracks. It’s not quite sad or happy; like everything with TATYANA, it’s content to sit somewhere in between.

LAKSHANE UNVEILS NEW SINGLE ‘RELOAD’ WITH ACCOMPANYING VISUALS

by the partae May 26, 2020
written by the partae

After the late 2019 release of his self produced EP ‘Come Alive’ which picked up nods from Spotify and even an exclusive segment on Beats1 radio, rapper/producer powerhouse Lakshane is back at it, announcing a brand new single, ‘Reload’ that will be out on all major platforms on the 29th of May.

‘Reload’, like the Melbourne rapper’s previous music, is for the hip hop lovers, boasting a vibrant chorus and lyrics full of bravado that captures the true essence of this upcoming Australian talent. The instrumentals were created by up and coming producer FRAAN, which complement the upbeat and high octane feel of the overall song.

“Reload is something I wanted to get off my chest. I feel like I allow a lot of people into my life without a wall and they take advantage of it or don’t reciprocate the love. Reload expresses my ability to reset and keep going despite these people and the other barriers I encounter”

Accompanying the release, Lakshane also premiered visuals on the 25th of May ahead of the song release. Directed by Lakshane himself with filming and editing by RMR productions, the music video is definitely a stronghold showcasing his serious comeback to the game.

He has a heavy release plan of singles for the rest of the year so this won’t be the last time you hear the name Lakshane.

House of Tracks Launches New Website With New Features

by the partae May 26, 2020
written by the partae
House of Tracks today announces a brand new website with many new features including a filter based search engine and a custom upload system, and it is already dealing with an 85% increase in daily track submissions as people turn to music for solace in these unprecedented times. The unique platform is now the largest supplier of royalty free dance music limited to one copy, and is providing vital ways for producers to monetise their work in essential new ways.
In recent weeks, producers have had more time to make music, and making music is a welcome creative outlet in these difficult times. Well-known names are making more music as well. Unable to perform at festivals and events, they’re discovering that they’re able to generate a good income through House of Tracks.
Because of this, in the last few weeks House of Tracks’s offering has increased 85%. It turns out people do need music after all. What they provide is royalty-free electronic dance music, created by talented producers from all over the world. What began six years ago as a ghost producer platform that mainly served DJs has grown into a worldwide supplier of royalty-free music for various industries. The gaming industry, advertising agencies, YouTubers, video editors and program makers have all found their way to the platform. Talented producers, from ambitious boys and girls in their attics to established names with their own studios use House of Tracks to sell their music.
Music can be used for DJs and producers, YouTubers, the gaming industry,  advertising, festival anthems, ghost producing, and even for movies and TV series. All tracks are checked by hand and finger printed (identified and matched by DJ monitors and its database with over 80 million tracks). Burning Spear - Door Peep https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLQp7I1CF_A The original Babylon Burning anthem, from the early days when the program was called Chant Down Babylon. Killer mid-70s roots reggae, with dramatic horns the perfect accompaniment for Winston Rodney's plaintive chanting. Third World - 1865 (96 Degrees In The Shade) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UwlUY3AQd2Q The song that got me into reggae, back when I was a teenage hiphop fan. Don't be misled by the title - this is not a song about lounging in the shade, but rather a historical tale of rebellion against colonial powers, and the subsequent massacre of over 400 people. Sizzla - Praise Ye Jah https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lieiSGwpooo When I first became a reggae fan, I only really liked the golden-age 70s roots sound - until I first heard Sizzla's "Praise Ye Jah" album when it was released in 1997. This opened my ears to the vast world of contemporary reggae music, and my life was never the same again. Midnite - Love Right (Live Right) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DIYFaPQtaBs Hailing not from Jamaica, but rather the small island of St.Croix in the US Virgin Islands, Midnite's lead singer Vaughn Benjamin (aka Akae Beka) gets my vote as the best lyricist in all of reggae music. While other contemporary Rastafarian singers devolved into pastiche and tired cliches, Vaughn's lyrics went to places never before explored by the music. While I don't love all of his countless releases, Midnite is likely to remain my all-time personal favourite forever.  Collie Buddz - Love and Reggae https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0tTuDl8HlZs My vote for the biggest reggae song of the last couple years, this is an absolute reggae party anthem, from Bermuda's Collie Buddz. "I just want to smoke, drink, and love my girl to some reggae". Chronixx - Here Comes Trouble https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LfeIfiiBTfY An early breakthrough tune from the biggest name in modern Jamaican reggae music, over a modern-day reworking of a classic Sly & Robbie riddim from the early 80s.  Busy Signal - Stay So https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h6DwAox2hF8 Moving now from reggae to dancehall - from one extreme of Jamaican music to the other. "Stay So" is one of the biggest songs of the last few years, and even after hearing it countless times, I still love it (something that isn't always the case with dancehall hits). It has an excellent cinematic video clip too. Koffee - Toast https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p8HoEvDh70Y The biggest dancehall song of last year in my opinion. A welcome antidote to the current trap-influenced sound of contemporary dancehall and its darkly violent lyrics, "Toast" is an upful, positive song that shows gratitude for life from a young artist with a big future ahead of her.

Burning Spear – Door Peep

The original Babylon Burning anthem, from the early days when the program was called Chant Down Babylon. Killer mid-70s roots reggae, with dramatic horns the perfect accompaniment for Winston Rodney’s plaintive chanting.

Third World – 1865 (96 Degrees In The Shade)

The song that got me into reggae, back when I was a teenage hiphop fan. Don’t be misled by the title – this is not a song about lounging in the shade, but rather a historical tale of rebellion against colonial powers, and the subsequent massacre of over 400 people.

Collie Buddz – Love and Reggae

My vote for the biggest reggae song of the last couple years, this is an absolute reggae party anthem, from Bermuda’s Collie Buddz. “I just want to smoke, drink, and love my girl to some reggae”.
Chronixx – Here Comes Trouble

An early breakthrough tune from the biggest name in modern Jamaican reggae music, over a modern-day reworking of a classic Sly & Robbie riddim from the early 80s.

Moving now from reggae to dancehall – from one extreme of Jamaican music to the other. “Stay So” is one of the biggest songs of the last few years, and even after hearing it countless times, I still love it (something that isn’t always the case with dancehall hits). The biggest dancehall song of last year in my opinion. A welcome antidote to the current trap-influenced sound of contemporary dancehall and its darkly violent lyrics, “Toast” is an upful, positive song that shows gratitude for life from a young artist with a big future ahead of her.

JEREMY NEALE Shares acoustic video for ‘Time’ New album We Were Trying To Make It available now

PRAISE FOR JEREMY NEALE

Winner Queensland Music Awards Song Of The Year – Dancin’ & Romancin’
Winner Queensland Music Awards Best Rock Single
Recipient of Grant McLennan Fellowship
4ZZZ Album of the Week“A new stylistic depth and emotional heft now augmenting his trademark ability to conjure hooks and melodies at will” – The Music ★★★★“Instant classics with perky, side-stepping tempos that camouflage anxiety-ridden lyrical content”

Jeremy Neale has today released a special acoustic video for ‘Time‘ via The Mustard Mix. Watch here.

In his single ‘Time‘ sees Neale addresses several demons including the realisation and haunting existentialism surrounding how much of his life has passed by. The track comes from his new album We Were Trying To Make It Out available now via Dot Dash Recordings / Remote Control.

We Were Trying to Make It Out was written following Neale‘s Grant McLennan fellowship win which saw him spend three months in New York City during 2018, attending songwriting masterclasses at NYU, collaborating with local writers and as it turns out, most importantly, resetting his life.

Many years stuck in a cycle of ever-changing work, relentless side-hustling and various degrees of financial ruin had taken a toll and the opportunity to escape the pressure cooker for a brief period of time helped immensely to cure the burnout.

The distance from home enabled a birds-eye view of what was and wasn’t working and enabled him to figure out what exactly he wanted from music and how the desire to create music could fit into a life worth living. Upon his return home to Brisbane, Australia, armed with new purpose and an openness to collaboration, he set to work on recording his sophomore record We Were Trying to Make It Out.

Sonically, We Were Trying to Make It Out contains Neale’s penchant for melodic hooks, delivered coherently and directly without compromise or pastiche. This is the Jeremy Neale sound – the result of years of searching and refining – honest, fully realised and immediate. Guitar pop underpinned by classic songwriting is potentially the recipe for finding oneself outside the current musical climate but is also the hallmark of creating something truly timeless.

On We Were Trying to Make It Out Neale explains the album title as the justification for the brutality you’ll put yourself through in an attempt to escape your demons.“There are a lot of sacrifices you have to make in order to create music if you’re not major label backed or independently wealthy and every mistake you make has direct consequences for your everyday quality of life.”

We Were Trying to Make It Out is a record written across two cities and two years. Early Jeremy Neale recordings might have read as a tribute to those who came before him, but here on his second record – he has found his sound and his voice.

Reinier Zonneveld will premiere 14 new tracks during unique livestream on May 27 Most new tracks were created during his lockdown period

by the partae May 25, 2020
written by the partae

On Wednesday May 27 7PM CEST, Dutch techno giant Reinier Zonneveld will do an exceptional livestream from his own sunny roof terrace with a stunning view over Amsterdam. What makes the livestream even more special, is that Reinier will perform a lot of long anticipated brand-new music live.

While being in lockdown, he has used the time to get creative in the studio. Reinier says: “As I usually am touring around the world from gig to gig, and now being confined at home for such a long period, it meant there were certain different approaches in my creative process. Usually I used to get my inspiration from performances and travels that I just experienced and now I had to imagine the dancefloor or get my inspiration from different sources. It also gave me the opportunity to work more in depth and experiment more with the hardware and synths I’ve got in my studio, simply because now I had the time to do it, instead of composing new music on the plane.”

One of the tracks that will pass by is Reiniers upcoming remix of the acclaimed classic ‘The First Rebirth’ by Jones & Stephenson, which will be out next month on his own label Filth On Acid in cooperation with the iconic Bonzai Records.

Make sure to tune in via Reinier’s Facebook page.

Stepping it up a notch this time, Untitled Group have carefully curated a unique showcase of notable Australian landmarks. Up next is the scenic abandoned artillery, Henry Head Battery, with headliner Hayden James performing a special cliff-edge sunset set with sprawling ocean views. Last, but very not least is the monumental 8400sqm Avalon Airport Hangar which will be fully kitted out with Untitled’s signature expanse of impressive lighting and production.

While Untitled Group has chosen to make the Virtual Day Party a free stream available to all, the same production expenses apply that would for a traditional Untitled day party. Hayden James:

It took award-winning music producer Hayden James one song to become a sound of the Australian summer. ‘Something About You’, released in the heat of December 2014 by Future Classic, lit up the pop music scene and gained Gold Certification in Australia. Today the artist’s electronic pop music has hooked a global audience on his sound, with a collection that has amassed over half a billion streams.

Following the release of ‘Something About You’, Hayden James played sold out venues world-wide while producing tracks for Katy Perry. October 2017 marked the release of ‘Numb’ featuring GRAACE, which scored Platinum certification in Australia and landed at #32 on Triple J’s Hottest 100.

Hit singles “Better Together” featuring Running Touch and ‘Just Friends’ featuring singer Boy Matthews sealed 2018 as Hayden James’ break out year, leading into his long-awaited debut album ‘Between Us’ in June 2019 cemented Hayden as one of Australia’s most influential pop producers, leading to an ARIA Nomination for Best Male Artist.

DJ Boring

Following a stand-out set at Untitled Group’s Pitch Music & Arts earlier this year and having one of the most watched Boiler Room’s of 2019, Dj Boring joins the Virtual Day Party lineup being filmed from the Avalon Airport Hangar. DJ BORING aka Tristan Hallis could be the most ironically named performer today: energetic journeys into forgotten gems and future classics, nothing about what he does is boring.

Lastlings

In 2018, the mystique surrounding Lastlings expanded as their live show caught the attention of Australian electronic heavyweights RÜFÜS DU SOL, signing the duo to their newly founded label Rose Avenue Records, and welcoming three substantial singles that included ‘Deja Vu’, ‘I’ve Got You’ and ‘Last Breath’. Previously selling out Australian headline tours, supporting the likes of Two Door Cinema Club and RÜFÜS DU SOL, while earning spots on esteemed music events; Coachella’s DoLaB and Splendour In The Grass and Beyond The Valley, Amy and Josh are no strangers to the world’s biggest stages.

Made in Paris

Closing 2019 with her most anticipated single ‘Pursuit’, Made in Paris has dominated radio with full rotation and 100+ spins on Triple J, taking top 30 positions weekly on the Australian Shazam Chart and adds to Spotify editorial playlists globally. From her three USA tours to Australia’s most acclaimed warehouses alongside Stephan Bodzin on his 2019 Australian tour, Pitch Music Festival, Beyond The Valley and Splendour In The Grass, the Sydney artist depicts a true deep and dark production journey from studio to stage. Paris has entrapped enthusiasts within the industry from Maceo Plex and Township Rebellion to Joseph Capriati’s techno allure, with a globally acclaimed Mixmag, BBC Radio 1 and her most recent Triple J Mix Up Residency, making her a solid staple.

Cassettes For Kids

Cassettes for Kid’s trademark blend of high energy house, breaks has seen a swift trajectory to the forefront of local dance music. He’s already dominated festival stages at Pitch Music and Arts, Strawberry Fields, Lost Paradise, Duke Street Block Party as well as headlining Australia’s best clubs – XE54, Universal & more. An extremely trusted selector, he has warmed dancefloors for the likes of Denis Sulta, DJ Koze, KiNK, KETTAMA, HAAi, Black Loops, ANNA, John Talabot and many more.

Adult Art Club

Mysterious Australian duo Adult Art Club have been teasing local experimental electro dance fans with some rare gems released sporadically over the past few years. Low slung, sinister vibes, soul shifting drops and crunchy samples bring an earthy vibe to the floor, with earth shaking lows and psychedelic highs, this duo are like manna from heaven for the more adventurous dance floor dwellers around the country. A treat for this year’s Beyond The Valley, Adult Art Club will have the sold out masses vibrating hard to their dank minimalism.

Thank you.

Untitled Group would like to thank our videographers, photographers, production and suppliers who all contributed to making these streams come together.

Where are you currently based and what is the music scene like there?   I’m based in Sydney, my lifelong hometown. Sydney has been “up and down” I think over the past decade or so in terms of its music scene. There was a real golden era in the 90s where every pub was full of bands playing and crowds gathering, with some great bands emerging. Things hit a bit of a brick wall a bit after that though, with venues closing and pokies ruling the pubs, but I think there’s been a gradual resurgence, with small bars opening and lots of interesting opportunities to play. “Pre-pandemic” things were building nicely, I felt. Maybe that will continue once things normalise somewhat/somehow, but it’s obviously all up in the air right now. How did you first start playing music? My father was a big band leader back in the Big Band era of the mid-20th century. He had my brother and I late in life and so we were brought up by going to gigs around the world when he was playing, with music was always “there” for us. But when my brother and I first started playing, we were heavily into early punk music, the Clash, the Pistols etc, and we started playing in bands in our home area of Bondi as a natural extension of that. The surf movies we loved all had epic soundtracks and we loved playing stuff in that vibe, kind of coastal-guitar-punk, with Midnight Oil thrown into the mix. What's been happening recently?   We’ve all been laying pretty low due to COVID so have been taking stock and trying to stay healthy and not drink too much and get ready for the release of the new compilation, which has been in the pipeline for several years. 'The Songs Of Adam Gibson' is coming out on 29 May 2020, please tell us about this album and how it came about: This record is a double vinyl / double CD release that compiles a swathe of stuff I’ve written and played with my three main bands from over the past 20 or so years. It gathers together a “best-of” really and puts ‘em all together on one release, being released by legend Brisbane label Coolin’ By Sound. I’ve been involved with up to 10 different albums over the years with Modern Giant, The Aerial Maps and the Ark-Ark Birds and this release plucks tracks from all of those bands and whacks them together as a cohesive overview. It’s been mooted for bloody ages but has just taken a while to get together, so I’m stoked it’s finally ready to come out. What or who influences your sound, songwriting/lyrics?   My whole idea is basically “storytelling with music” combined with articulating a sense of particular landscapes, so I am naturally drawn to people who have that storytelling aspect to their music, or are able to create a “landscape” that speaks to a place and space. Midnight Oil were an early key influence, with bands like the Triffids, Not Drowning Waving also being important. Then there’s the punk rock sensibility of The Clash and Joe Strummer, combined with evocative emotional heft of the likes of Joni Mitchell and Tom Waits. The latter being important because I essentially do “spoken word”, similar or at least influenced by a lot of Tom Waits’ stuff. How do you usually go about writing music?   I create a kind of emotional or psychological landscape of what a song might be about and I work with people such as my brother Simon Gibson or the likes of fellow Aerial Map-pers Alannah Russack, Pete Fenton and Mark Hyland to create the music around that. Over the years I have developed a pretty punk rock way of working, not overthinking anything and just getting it done, and the people I’ve worked with over the years have really responded to that. What do you have planned for this album? We plan to tour as The Aerial Maps in general support of this record but god knows when that will be able to happen. In a weird way, the pandemic has allowed us to concentrate on getting the album out and not have to worry too much about the touring aspect just yet, so it’s quite ok really. What do you like to do away from music? I’m a journalist and copywriter so I manage to eke out a living by doing that to the best of my energy and ability. Surfing and travel are also central to my life so if I can manage to do a surf trip on a regular basis, things are good. Who are you listening to at the moment?   A disparate selection really, ranging from Laura Marling’s latest album to things like early Big Audio Dynamite – one of my favourite bands – plus some Americana, things like Sun Kil Moon and Smog. Pretty all over the place but that’s Covid living for ya! What's planned for 2020? Basically to get the album out, survive, surf some good waves, tell stories, be happy if possible. Favourite food and place to hangout? I am somewhat reclusive right at the moment so I stick fairly close to my home neighbourhood, so pretty much the local RSL is my go-to of choice (when it’s open!) But I do tend to bust out every time I can and travel to favourite spots overseas. My brother now lives in Bali so I have a good place to stay and hang out there – that’s always a great place to escape to overall and also a good place to write songs in general. https://www.facebook.com/adamgibsonspokenword/about/ https://www.instagram.com/adamfgibson http://www.adamfgibson.com/ https://open.spotify.com/artist/3ODJMrDRRL0gKcCKNw0zVS https://smarturl.it/mbd0l0

Adam Gibson Interview

by the partae May 25, 2020
written by the partae

The surf movies we loved all had epic soundtracks and we loved playing stuff in that vibe, kind of coastal-guitar-punk, with Midnight Oil thrown into the mix.

What’s been happening recently?

We’ve all been laying pretty low due to COVID so have been taking stock and trying to stay healthy and not drink too much and get ready for the release of the new compilation, which has been in the pipeline for several years.

‘The Songs Of Adam Gibson’ is coming out on 29 May 2020, please tell us about this album and how it came about:

This record is a double vinyl / double CD release that compiles a swathe of stuff I’ve written and played with my three main bands from over the past 20 or so years.
