In what will be regarded as an incredible act of bravery Bluesfest has announced Early Bird tickets to its 2021 festival will go on sale today. This announcement comes one week ahead of what is said to be an historical First Artist Announcement next week on July 8th. “Right now the only constant is change, and we are ready for it”, says Festival Director, Peter Noble OAM. “We believe in music and we are coming back for Bluesfest 2021, not just for us, but because the industry needs us to come back. Our industry, the music business has its back against the wall. COVID has shut us down. Since the middle of March, almost everyone in our industry has received no income. As the Festival Director of Bluesfest and a music industry veteran I strongly feel that we must make positive steps to move forward and show the thousands of people that depend on us that there is a future coming - our industry and events will come back. We know there will be more challenges, however, we also know that we are a resilient industry that loves and wants to get back to the business of entertaining. As those challenges present we will meet and rise to every single one of them to deliver Bluesfest. We call on our industry to get behind us at this time because we are leading the charge. If we find that the internationals can’t come, we will add more Aussies. If we find the internationals can come, we might add more internationals. What our team is dedicated to doing is everything it takes to present Bluesfest Easter 2021 in a manner where it will be our most legendary festival yet.”   At this point in time the government will allow Bluesfest the capacity to host 7500 people seated onsite. It is envisaged this figure will increase as restrictions are gradually lifted between now and next April. Bluesfest has made it clear to its patrons that there is no risk in buying tickets as all monies will be securely held in a locked account should the unlikely need to refund become a necessity.  “When purchasing tickets you can feel proud that not only are you supporting Bluesfest, you are supporting the greater music industry get back up on its feet and that’s something to sing about”. In response to the announcement regarding the $250 million bail out offered to the Arts Sector by the Prime Minister Peter Noble says “This funding is desperately required by independent Australian music operators who have their backs against the COVID wall.  Government should support the independents and recognise that the multi-nationals have the monetary reserves to ride this crisis through.”  Annually Bluesfest employs approximately 1000 employees and contractors – not including the artists and their crews.  “When you factor in the full artist crews, their managers, the agents, publicists, drivers, security teams, and everybody else - that’s thousands of people we are responsible for and therefore we know that we have no choice but to get back to business and that’s exactly what we’ve been doing since Bluesfest 2020 was banned in March.  We decided the week we were shut down by government order that Bluesfest 2021 was on, and that is why we are at the point where we are in a position to go on sale with our Early Bird tickets today and announce our first artist announcement next week. “We invite our industry to move forward with us to a future we can all celebrate the live performing arts again. Bluesfest is an all-independent Australian company.  Please join us to invest into the live industry’s future.” Bluesfest is are committed to presenting Bluesfest 2021 and are working on different plans for the different scenarios that the government will roll out between now and then. Due to the fluid nature of this situation Bluesfest will create a new space on its website where it will host its full Mission Statement for 2021 along with updated information as it comes in hot from the PMs office. This along with a FAQ section will help answer all the questions as they arise so fans and ticketholders can remain fully updated. Get your Early Bird tickets now.  “What I can say is whilst we don’t know what the future holds for the greater music industry you can be assured we here at Bluesfest are fully committed to presenting  an outstanding event in accordance with government regulations”. Festival Director, Peter Noble OAM.

Fontaines D.C. Share ‘Televised Mind’ Taken From Forthcoming LP ‘A Hero’s Death’ – Out Friday 31 July

by the partae July 1, 2020
written by the partae

Fontaines D.C. have shared a new song and accompanying music video. A live favourite, ‘Televised Mind’ heaves, drones, and churns – a perfect embodiment of the bruised and battered – albeit beautiful – throughline on the band’s forthcoming LP, A Hero’s Death (out Friday 31 July via Partisan Records / Liberator Music). Listen/watch below, and feel free to share.

Fontaines D.C. frontman Grian Chatten says of the song: “This song is about the echo chamber, and how personality gets stripped away by surrounding approval. People’s opinions get reinforced by constant agreement, and we’re robbed of our ability to feel wrong. We’re never really given the education of our own fallibility. People feign these great beliefs in order to appear trendy, as opposed to independently arriving at their own thoughts.

We were listening to a lot of The Prodigy and The Brian Jonestown Massacre, specifically their song ‘Open Heart Surgery’. I was interested in extrapolating those types of chord progressions and capturing this droning, hypnotic feel. That last line repeated over and over [“What ya call it”] is a buffer expression that people used here in Dublin. It’s sort of like “umm” or “well…” – it’s what people say when they’re distracted.”

A Hero’s Death was produced in London by Dan Carey (Black Midi, Bat For Lashes). The band have previously shared other album highlights ‘I Don’t Belong’ as well as the title track, which features a music video starring Aidan Gillen (Game of Thrones, The Wire, Peaky Blinders). Watch HERE.

Last week Fontaines D.C. also announced a run of Spring 2021 UK tour dates, including a show at London’s Alexandra Palace on 27th May, their biggest UK headline show to date. The band’s UK tour will be preceded by a new run of EU headline tour dates set to take place across March and April 2021. Full routing and more info can be found HERE.

The band’s debut album Dogrel debuted Top 10 on the UK album charts, earning Fontaines D.C. a Mercury Prize nomination, #1 Album of the Year positions from BBC 6 Music and Rough Trade, a performance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and numerous sold out tours in the UK and abroad – including triumphantly selling out London Brixton Academy in just 1 week. The Guardian (who gave the album 5 stars) praised Dogrel as being “brilliant, top to bottom,” The FADER called Fontaines D.C. “One of the most exciting new bands around,” and NME (who also gave Dogrel 5 stars) called them “One of guitar music’s most essential new voices.”

Due to COVID-19, Fontaines D.C.’s April Australian headline tour has been rescheduled to December. All dates & ticketing information can be found HERE.

THE MUSIC VICTORIA AWARDS RETURN FOR 2020 + SUBMISSIONS NOW OPEN FOR MUSICIANS, PRODUCERS, VENUES AND FESTIVALS

by the partae July 1, 2020
written by the partae

Music Victoria is thrilled to reveal that the 16th annual Music Victoria Awards will return in 2020 during Melbourne Music Week to celebrate the vast achievements of Victoria’s music community over the last year. Despite live music coming to a standstill since COVID-19 restrictions came in place, there have been huge achievements by the Victorian music community.

This year, Music Victoria is pleased to introduce three new and updated Award categories including the Outstanding Woman in Music Award which recognises the achievements of not only musicians but also women behind the scenes, such as industry professionals, management and crew, as voted by the Music Victoria Board. For the first time, the Awards will also present the new industry-voted category for Best Producer as well as the merging of Best Male and Best Female Musician to become the public-voted award for Best Musician. The Archie Roach Foundation Award for Best Emerging First Peoples Act will continue to provide one deserving artist with a cash grant and access to mentorship as part of the award.

Following a change in the Awards’ eligibility timeline, all nominations for best album, song and individual genre awards in 2020 must be taken from music released between 1 September 2019 and 30 June 2020, to bring the Awards in line with the past financial year. However, no one will be disadvantaged by the new timelines, as any music released from 1 July to 30 August 2020 that would have previously been considered this year will be recognised in the 2021 Awards.

“It’s been an incredibly tough year for the industry, but also a year where community spirit, ingenuity, and resilience have really come to the fore. The Victorian music community has so much to be proud of, and I encourage everyone to get involved with the Awards through submissions, voting and the event itself.” – Laura Imbruglia, Music Victoria Awards Event Producer

Submissions are now open until 5pm Monday 20 July for the venue, festival, and producer categories as well as all genre categories for artists and releases. Submissions are only open to Music Victoria Members, so what are you waiting for? Sign up for a Music Victoria membership today and nominate yourself or those you love for your favourite Victorian releases, acts, venues and festivals of the year.

The categories open for self-submission are:

Best Venue (under 500 capacity)
Best Venue (over 500 capacity)

Death Bells Announce New Album “New Signs of Life” via Dais Records, due 25th September

by the partae July 1, 2020
written by the partae

Today Death Bells announce their new album New Signs of Life and share its title-track, a grandiose statement, influenced by the theme song of HBO’s classic television program Six Feet Under. The album is due 25th September via Dais Records, pre-order here: https://n-s-o-l.com/

Listen To New Signs Of Life

The LA-via-Australia duo deliver a shopping list of personal neuroses charged with wry optimism in ‘New Signs of Life‘, dressing it with jagged guitars, brass, and percussion that provides a deliberate pace for Death Bell’s new chapter. As method gives way to melody, ‘New Signs of Life’ exudes an urgent hope laced with drive and verve

“We started writing ‘New Signs of Life’ in Calgary whilst on tour around this time last year. More than anything, the song is about resilience in the face of change. It’s a very deliberate statement and sets the tone for what’s to come musically from us,” the band explain

Death Bells is the longtime musical collaboration between Will Canning and Remy Veselis. Formed in 2015 during their late adolescent years in Sydney, Australia, the act has proven to be a mainstay in the alternative underground musical landscape both in their homeland and overseas during their five-year history. Blurring the lines of post-punk and garage rock, Death Bells has morphed and transformed as the two members have grown up throughout their late teenage years living together into early adulthood. With Canning’s distinctive baritone and the kinetic collection of reverb-drenched leads by Veselis being a constant during their musical output, the two made the permanent move 7,000 miles away to Los Angeles, California in 2018 where the current incarnation of Death Bells has blossomed.

Following the releases of their debut E.P, much-loved first album, and seven-inch single on Funeral Party Records and their 2019 single on Metropolitan Indian, Death Bells have joined the Dais Records family for their highly anticipated sophomore album New Signs of Life. Three years in the making, the release sees the act embrace their diverse tastes to deliver unforgettable hooks and more expansive sounds across its nine graceful songs.

Engineered and mixed under the attentive eye of Colin Knight at Paradise Studios throughout mid-to-late 2019, New Signs of Life is the band’s most complete work to date. Along with classic Death Bells brooding romanticism, the themes of the record divulge personal insight into their move across the world and both the strained and new relationships that have materialized throughout their existence. Slated for release on September 25th, New Signs of Life is as advertised – it is the career-defining new chapter to commence the new decade.

604 RECORDS ANNOUNCES SIGNING OF VANCOUVER SINGER-SONGWRITER MICHAELA SLINGER LABEL DEBUT “TAROT” SET FOR RELEASE JULY 3

PRE-SAVE AVAILABLE NOW

June 22, 2020 (Vancouver, BC) – Canada’s most celebrated indie label 604 Records starts the summer strong with the announcement of their newest signing, Vancouver indie-pop artist Michaela Slinger. Making her label debut on July 3 with the stunning release of “Tarot,” the single is now available to pre-save across streaming platforms. Bringing together her dreamy vocals and prolific songwriting, “Tarot” is just a hint of what’s to come from Slinger’s forthcoming debut full length release.

“I first heard about Michaela from a couple of our in-house producers, Louise Burns and Kevin “Kevvy” Maher, who kept raving about how great she was, so I listened to what they were working on” recalls Jonathan Simkin, 604 Records President. “I was so impressed, and we quickly offered her a demo deal. The songs she recorded are great, and it was a no-brainer to offer her a full deal. I’m so glad I did, and even happier she accepted. Michaela’s a great artist and songwriter, and a great person to work with. I’m looking forward to working with her and helping her career to flourish in the future.”

Echoing the excitement, Slinger adds, “I feel thrilled and privileged to get to work with 604 Records. I’ve wanted to do this forever, but it’s terrifying to take the leap and to trust your very vulnerable, personal creative vision with others. I’ve been supported and mentored from the moment I walked in the door—special thanks to Louise Burns, Kevvy, and Jonathan Simkin—and can’t wait to share more music.”

Infectious yet soothing, Slinger combines youthful, energetic, and harmony-rich melodies with old soul lyricism — think Maggie Rogers meets Joni Mitchell. Slinger’s background of musical theatre makes her a compelling live performer whether she’s dancing to high-tempo tracks or alone with her guitar for an acoustic song. Slinger independently released her successful debut single, “Flux” (prod. by Nygel Asselin) in July 2019, which earned over 250K streams. Post-Flux, Slinger’s career began taking new shape: she was accepted as one of two fully-funded artists to complete Canada’s Music Incubator in Toronto, and returned home to play Vancouver’s historic Vogue Theatre as a finalist in the Elevate Music Project. Less than a year later, Slinger’s career has come full circle, releasing a brand new track on a freshly minted record deal.

On her new release, Slinger notes, “Tarot was one of the first songs I ever demoed and self-produced on Garageband at home. I had just purchased a MIDI keyboard and was trying to push myself to write a song a day in April 2019. I didn’t achieve a song a day, but lots of uninhibited, curious experimentation happened, such as the low percussive hums you hear throughout the track. Those are original from me in my thin-walled apartment, messing around with layering my own vocals as samples”.

Between her own writing prowess and newly acquired team at 604 Records, Michaela Slinger is sure to be an artist to watch as we close out 2020. For more information information, please visit: www.michaelaslinger.com.

Delivered, Live Presents: Discovered Live

by the partae July 1, 2020
written by the partae

Delivered, Live presents a special one-off show this weekend, shining a light on some of Victoria’s best up and coming talent. Five acts will take to the stage, once again with the now all too rare ability to perform on a fully amplified (and lit) stage.

Tickets for the show start at as little as $10 are available HERE and profits from these tickets go directly to the bands, their teams and the crew creating the show – all of whom would otherwise be out of work at this time.

First to hit the stage will be Melbourne queer chaotic pop singer and multi- instrumentalist Max Lawrence. Where are you currently based? I'm currently based in Melbourne, Australia. How did you first start playing music? I started playing guitar when I was super young so that has always been my go to and saviour. Throughout high school I then played in a few different bands and once I finished, I started touring the country so it all evolved from there! What's been happening recently? I've been tucked away making the most of this funny time, working on more new music and staying as productive as can be. You have created a new reimagined version of your single 'Fall Down' how and why did this come about? After Fall Down came out on April 23rd I dropped a music video, behind the scenes video of how this was put together and after that I released a LIVE performance video of the track to give my listeners an insight into what my shows will look like! As the original is quite upbeat and boppy I wanted to show off the song in its most raw and emotional form.  Please describe the process that you went through: I started by jamming the track out with me and my guitar, figured out the arrangement and took it to the coolest looking roller rink in town - the rest was history.  Please tell us why it's important to you that artists put out proper live performances that expose the artist in their true form, especially in this current COVID19 period:  I think it's important for artists to be putting out live performances that expose them in their truest colours. (Especially in this time when proper live shows have been taken away from us.) I think it's a lot easier these days to hide behind clean cut production than ever before and nothing can match or be exactly re-created in a live performance setting - it's going to be different every time and that's the beauty of it. What do you like to do away from music? I love training, fitness, sport - anything that gets me outside and pushes me physically! So great to keep my head in check.  Who are you listening to at the moment? Getting a workout at the moment is Lauv's new 'Without You' EP, a heap of Machine Gun Kelly & the new Bring Me The Horizon track 'Parasite Eve' - it SLAMS! What are you working on currently? I've been working away on my live set behind the scenes as well as planning and putting together a pretty special music video for my next single that will be filmed in a few weeks time! What's planned for 2020? At this stage i'm aiming to have a couple more tracks out before the year is done and ideally be back on the touring circuit depending on how everything goes live music wise! Favourite food and place to hangout? A tricky one! I think right now my favourite food is from a Vietnamese restaurant called Typhoon in the south eastern suburbs of Melbourne - incredible. As far as places to hangout, I’ve always felt right at home near the ocean. So I love doing any sort of activity where I'm close to or in view of the water. I think good company comes before location though so I could literally be anywhere in the world and be super happy with my best mates around me.   http://lakelend.com.au

Where are you currently based?

I’m currently based in Melbourne, Australia.

How did you first start playing music?

I started playing guitar when I was super young so that has always been my go to and saviour. Throughout high school I then played in a few different bands and once I finished, I started touring the country so it all evolved from there!

What’s been happening recently?

I’ve been tucked away making the most of this funny time, working on more new music and staying as productive as can be.

You have created a new reimagined version of your single ‘Fall Down’ how and why did this come about?

After Fall Down came out on April 23rd I dropped a music video, behind the scenes video of how this was put together and after that I released a LIVE performance video of the track to give my listeners an insight into what my shows will look like! As the original is quite upbeat and boppy I wanted to show off the song in its most raw and emotional form.

Please describe the process that you went through:

I started by jamming the track out with me and my guitar, figured out the arrangement and took it to the coolest looking roller rink in town – the rest was history.

Please tell us why it’s important to you that artists put out proper live performances that expose the artist in their true form, especially in this current COVID19 period:

I think it’s important for artists to be putting out live performances that expose them in their truest colours. (Especially in this time when proper live shows have been taken away from us.) I think it’s a lot easier these days to hide behind clean cut production than ever before and nothing can match or be exactly re-created in a live performance setting – it’s going to be different every time and that’s the beauty of it.

What do you like to do away from music?

I love training, fitness, sport – anything that gets me outside and pushes me physically! So great to keep my head in check.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Getting a workout at the moment is Lauv’s new ‘Without You’ EP, a heap of Machine Gun Kelly & the new Bring Me The Horizon track ‘Parasite Eve’ – it SLAMS!

What are you working on currently?

I’ve been working away on my live set behind the scenes as well as planning and putting together a pretty special music video for my next single that will be filmed in a few weeks time!

What’s planned for 2020?

At this stage i’m aiming to have a couple more tracks out before the year is done and ideally be back on the touring circuit depending on how everything goes live music wise!

MUSTAFA Debuts new single ‘Come Back’ In performance with James Blake

by the partae July 1, 2020
written by the partae

“Mustafa’s message, of caring as an act of courage, is one that feels especially apt amid the uncertainty of today.”  – The FADER

On March 10th, 2020, 23-year-old Muslim poet Mustafa released his stunning debut single ‘Stay Alive’. Today, Mustafa follows the track with a beautiful performance of new song ‘Come Back’ alongside James Blake. Directed by Nabil, the minimalist performance highlights Mustafa’s elegant, understated songwriting.

Speaking on the meaning behind song and Blake’s hand in it, Mustafa says: “Perpetually grateful for James who helped free me of my own emotional burdens when I was young, to now helping me free these stories of those who’ve passed too young. today marks 2 years without Smoke Dawg. I pray the people you lost come back to you in the form that heals you best, if not a memory, a dream, if not a dream, in their sibling’s eyes, if not that, than in the way you carry yourself”.

‘Stay Alive’ was named a Song You Need To Know by Rolling Stone and is a near-perfect introduction to a vital new voice in music.  Produced by Frank Dukes and James Blake, this is inner-city folk music; a song for, about, and born out of the hood. Mustafa was first moved to make music after he lost several close friends to gun violence. ‘Stay Alive’ is addressed to those departed friends and to his Toronto neighbourhood, Regent Park. On the accompanying video, ‘Stay Alive’s’ powerful message is presented alongside emotive footage of Regent Park, Mustafa’s native neighbourhood in downtown Toronto.

Watch the performance of ‘Come Back’ now and stay tuned for more from Mustafa soon.

Who is StoKed? Stoked means “purveyor of Infectious Energy”. Basically, it reflects my state of being, and that hopefully reflects in my productions along with how I am behind the DJ console. Where are you currently based? I am currently at home in the Bombay city of India. How has your COVID-19 experience been so far? It has been ok. I’ve been catching up on family time, as I was touring from October to February 2020, so being locked down at my family home meant I got to spent time with the people I had not seen for months. After being stuck indoors for so long, I’m now a now house-trained expert in the art of doing dishes, laundry and mopping lol. I got myself my techno puppy Mr Tizzy a week before lockdown and he has been a life saver of sorts. Lockdown gave me lots of time to spend in the studio, and I’ve managed to sign 2 EP’s with IAMT & Codex that are scheduled for release this year. COVID-19 has definitely changed my perspective on life by making me appreciate what I have even more than before. Your new release Deeper Passion is out now, what influenced the sound & songwriting? “Deeper Passion” as the name suggests, is to do with the only passion that makes me wakeup pumped everyday which is of course, music. I have tried to encapsulate that energy into a track for the listeners to also feel. “The People” is all about how people are and experience life, as it has different moments in its ups and downs. With dark melancholic chords coming in on the main drop, I have tried to show the different phases in life, however best I could in a track. Where & when did you record and who with? I produced the EP at home, sometime in September last year, and it was finished just before going on tour.  What programs/instruments did you use? I used Ableton as my main sequencer that recorded all the parts and let me mix everything together. For my monitor speakers I have a pair of Kali Audio LP 6, Midi Keyboard Arturia Key Lab 49, and for VST instruments I mainly used “Serum” and “Sylenth”. How did you approach the recording & production? I had already imagined the tracks in my head. It was just a matter of transferring what I was thinking and feeling into Ableton via my midi keyboard. Once I played the parts, it was then a case of fine tuning the sounds in the VST synths until everything was how I imagined. What did you find most challenging & rewarding about this release? This EP wasn’t really that challenging, as I knew what I wanted from each of the tracks. Making my return on my good friend Zeid’s label Deep Therapy Records was an honour made even more special by having the legends Loco & Jam remix the title track. I really loved having those guys remix my music, and that was the most rewarding aspect of this release. Please tell us about the techno scene in India? The techno / underground scene in India is definitely burgeoning. It still has a long way to go before it rivals the scenes in places like Germany, but people in India are more aware of electronic music now. People being new to genres like techno, means they have little preconceptions, so are really openminded to experimentation. All in all, it looks very promising from my point of view. Who are you listening to at the moment? Oh… there is so much music out there. I am really digging lots of tech house right now, as its medium tempo is often perfect while out for a run or going to the gym. Deeper music like that is also cool from having a relaxing drive in the car. What do you like to do away from music?   I love playing golf and aim to get a game at least a couple of times a month as it helps me relax and focus. I am majorly into fitness, so you will often find me at the gym three times a week. Reading a book or watching Netflix are also preferred tools to help relax and unwind. What is planned for the remainder of 2020? “Rave de School” is a collab track I did with bro Samwise that’s coming out on a “Minitech Recordings” various artists compilation in July. Then I’ve got the “Girl with the Red Hair” EP featuring my buddy Fire coming out on I Am Techno in August. After those, in September I am back on Minitech Recordings with my release “Hiigaran” that includes a remix from by good friend Steve Mulder. In October it’s my release on IAMT Red called “Effervescence” EP, then in November it’s my release on Codex titled “Bitonal Creatures” that’s featuring vocals by my friend Fire. I am really looking forward to the end of this current virus pandemic so clubs can open again as I’ve really missed playing gigs, but have been keeping busy in the studio, and really looking forward to all my forthcoming releases. Thanks for taking the times to chat with me, and hope everyone out there is keeping safe. https://www.beatport.com/artist/stoked/418970 https://www.residentadvisor.net/dj/stoked https://soundcloud.com/stokedofficial https://www.facebook.com/stokedofficial https://twitter.com/stokedofficial https://www.instagram.com/stokedofficial/

POP TROUBADOUR HAZLETT EXPLORES MOMENTS OF CLARITY ON THUNDERING HOPES EP OUT NOW

by the partae July 1, 2020
written by the partae

“Something to soundtrack both new love and broken hearts”
triple j

“Hazlett’s potent delivery is haunting yet simultaneously comforting.”
EARMILK

“Hazlett utilises music as therapy, both a vessel for his thoughts and a means to broadcast them.”
CLASH MAGAZINE

Writing and performing music is a form of therapy for Australian native Hazlett. His modus operandi: finding beauty in the banalities of modern life.

The self-proclaimed overthinker is ready to step out of the shadows, having journeyed far from home in Brisbane to find creativity in Stockholm, Sweden. His Thundering Hopes EP out today is a follow up from the artist’s first staple break-up EP Honey, Where Is My Home.

Exploring the journey of acceptance, Hazlett tells us: “It’s about those moments when you move on and feel normal again. The times when you live a little reckless. The way you bury certain feelings to protect yourself. Nights when you wonder if it’s okay to be selfish and mornings when you notice nothing’s a waste of time. It’s a collection of stories about fumbling your way to feeling good again and how living’s never perfect, but you can make it pretty.”

The singer-songwriter has already captured an impressive list of credits, having received support from the likes of NME, EARMILK, Clash Magazine, and When The Horn Blows, which described his soundscape as ‘danceable uplifting melodies that feel like inhaling that first blast of fresh air when you’ve been underwater for too long.’ Last year, Hazlett appeared on Australia’s triple j Unearthed as a featured artist.

Hazlett’s lyrics naturally often deal with transition and moments of clarity.  Opener ‘Fireworks’ is the heartbreak song of the record, although he tells us “it’s more a realisation that you can’t make someone love you and if you need to can you really call that love.” Elsewhere on the record, ‘Karaoke’ is about being there when your friends need you – in this case while on a night out with Lindsay Lohan in NYC that got out of hand – “when that happens I have a paternal instinct that kicks in, I get a one track mind for making sure nothing happens to my friends.”

After writing songs and playing in various rhythm sections for most of his formative years, Hazlett has been able to perfect his own artistry. Teaming up with producer Freddy Alexander, Hazlett combines the heart and grit of the songwriters of old with an open-minded nature that takes in a plethora of modern pop influences. He is certainly one to watch out for this year.

Your new favorite sad boy electro artist Lakelend releases a one take stripped back version of his debut single ‘Fall Down’. On the reimagining of the track Lakelend’s had this to say.

“The song is one that sits really close to home for me, about heartbreak and hanging up the gloves on first love. I really wanted to express that raw sincerity and journey, which I think is perfectly captured in the stripped version” Lakelend explains.

For those new to the Lakelend fan club ‘Fall Down’ was the debut single for the Melbourne artist. Formerly a member of Rock / heavy band Storm The Sky, his new project sees him flex his production and songwriting chops while still toeing the line of his emo roots.

ICYMI you can listen to the original below. He’s got plenty more songs in the works so keep him at the top of your ‘ones to watch’ lists.

NOFX / FRANK TURNER SPLIT COVERS ALBUM ‘WEST COAST VS. WESSEX’ OUT JULY 31, 2020 Today Frank Turner releases a new version of NOFX’s ‘Falling In Love’, the latest single to emerge from forthcoming split covers album ‘West Coast Vs. Wessex’. Due for release via Fat Mike’s own Fat Wreck Chords label on July 31, 2020, the project brings together for the first time ever the long-running Los Angeles punks and the London-based singer and ex-Million Dead frontman, for many years now both friends and fans of each other’s music. Turner’s new interpretation of ‘Falling In Love’ takes the album closer from NOFX’s 1997 album So Long And Thanks For All The Shoes into stark, affecting territory with a near unrecognisable vocal. Speaking about the approach behind his version of the track, Turner notes; "When Mike asked me to do a covers split with NOFX, I was blown away, and immediately knew that one of the songs I'd do would be 'Falling In Love'. I've long thought it was one of his best compositions, it's a beautiful lyric and melody, and I wanted to come at the song in a way that would lay that bare and highlight the beauty of the writing. I think it came out pretty good.” It’s not often the leader of one of your favourite bands ask you to do a split album, one where his band covers the songs you’ve written. It’s the enviable situation Frank found himself in last year, when Fat Mike approached him to propose just that. The fruits of this project, ‘West Coast Vs. Wessex’, captures NOFX filtering five songs from Turner’s sizeable solo back catalogue through their singular sensibility, with Turner reciprocating to record five of his personal favourites from NOFX’s 37-years-and-counting career. But these aren’t simply double-time versions of Turner’s folk-punk tunes or acoustic re-workings of NOFX’s iconic SoCal punk anthems - both took time to play with the possibilities each other’s music presented.   “I listened to all his records, and I picked the ones that I thought I could make more interesting,” notes Fat Mike. “What I did is change a lot of chords. Frank, he beats me in the singing department. So I can't sing better than he can, but I can maybe throw in a melody here or there or chord that he hadn’t thought of.” Turner took a similar approach. “I didn't want to just do straight covers of anything. I wanted to try and pick songs where I felt like me and my band could bring something different to the table,” he says. “But it did strike me that it would be cool to demonstrate to the casual NOFX fan, who doesn't know who I am, that I am actually a fan. I didn't just go to Spotify and pick the five most-listened-to songs.” For the record, only one of his choices appears on Spotify’s top five for NOFX: ‘Bob’, which Turner here transforms into a wistful country song.   “Everything he picked was from the ’90s, so I took that as it’s okay to mostly do his early stuff too,” says Fat Mike, who channeled ‘90s NOFX for their interpretations, transforming ‘Thatcher F*cked The Kids’ into a jaunty companion to ‘Philthy Phil Philanthropist’. Turner and his band, The Sleeping Souls, recorded their songs between their rehearsal space and during tour commitments, whilst NOFX recorded at Fat Mike’s Six Floggs studio, with production by the D-Composers (Fat Mike, Johnny Carey, BAZ Bastien, Yotam Ben Horin).   In ‘West Coast Vs. Wessex’, the Frank Turner-Fat Mike Mutual Admiration Society has produced 10 hooky re-imaginings of each others’ music - the novelty may pique listeners’ curiosity, but it’s the songs that will keep them coming back. SPLIT COVERS ALBUM

“Johnson has the uncanny ability to take hyper-specific life experiences and transform them into universally relatable songs rife with lessons learned and stories told.” — Atwood Magazine

Josiah Johnson – a former and founding member of the Billboard chart-topping band The Head and the Heart – is announcing his debut solo album today, titled Every Feeling On A Loop. It will be released via ANTI- Records on September 4.

On lead single  “Nobody Knows” Johnson sings for people to have courage in sharing and receiving the truths of their hearts. The messages, like the man himself, are a welcome breath of air.

Directed by Hannah Welever, watch the song’s new music video HERE.

“A lot of the growth documented on this album is about taking responsibility for how I’m showing up in the world, and that song was about taking responsibility for how I care for myself,” Johnson says. “Part of my experience with addiction was that I was having a hard time, but I wasn’t raising my hand to get the help I needed.”

Like many musicians before him, Johnson turned to drugs to cope with the burnout and anxiety that came with his early years in The Head and the Heart. Too many long nights and too few emotional tools – twin flames that burned at both ends. And Johnson collapsed into ash. In the midst of writing The Head and the Heart’s third album, Signs of Light, Johnson checked into a rehab facility. When he checked out, though, his work hadn’t properly been completed. He tried to get back into the studio with the band, but eventually was told, “We love you but we can’t have you here right now.”

With time, though, came clarity. Although the music came regularly, Johnson still allowed himself to fantasise about a life never returning to professional music. He still contemplates earning a degree in social work. Yet, the songs kept bubbling up. On Every Feeling on a Loop, lush musical arrangements and harmonies support Johnson’s baritone crooning. At times, the songs sound like prayers. At others, his exuberance feels like the euphoria he’d always sought, this time hard-earned and wiser. He says he feels like a new person making it, charting his journey out of the dark into the wide awake of the morning, using the magic that was his all along.

Growing up curious and bright in an insular, conservative community, Johnson says he learned early on to discern which parts of himself were welcome and which were not. Though he felt love in that community, it was a smaller love than what he needed. Now, though, after years of self-study and self-healing, bolstered both by music and the love from friends and family, Johnson is ready to pen the next chapter of his life.

“I’ve learned to love my process,” Johnson says. “I’ve learned to love when I’ve taken the long way and where I get to admit mistakes. Humility and uncertainty are welcome. Being seen for who I am and where I’m at is my priority. And I am exactly where I am supposed to be. The result of that new courage bears out in how I’m able to be a better friend to the people I love. That’s the gift.”
