It’s a mission that was forged on his acclaimed releases ‘Dream State’ (produced by Kuren) and ‘Go To Sleep’ on his debut EP ‘Dreams’. As shown by his 2019 singles ‘Blueprint’ and ‘Trophy’, Lanstan wrote the songs on the new EP with the intention of being able to perform them with maximum energy. As Lanstan further explains, “Vision is me sharing my goals and ambitions as well as my fears and insecurities. It’s my most direct and vulnerable explanation of my Vision as an artist. I wanted every song to strike a different tone but all surround the same theme. It’s very important to me that by the end of the project, you know me better as an artist. The March long weekend just got a whole lot more exciting as Live at the Bowl welcomes the feel-good splendour of The Cat Empire and some family fun with Justine Clarke, Jimmy Giggle, Dan Sultan and Pevan & Sarah from 6 – 7 March.

Hometown festival favourites The Cat Empire are back after the longest absence from a Melbourne stage in their career. The Live at the Bowl show on Saturday 6 March will be their first Melbourne performance in over a year and they could not be happier to be back.

“After the year that’s been, and what it’s meant for live music, we’re truly excited to get back on stage in the heart of the city that raised us. The Cat Empire has always thrived on the live experience; the Sidney Myer Music Bowl show promises to be a real homecoming,” says The Cat Empire’s front man Felix Riebl.

Audiences can expect The Cat Empire’s all-genre-embracing anthems, high-energy performance and sounds to elevate the spirit. This joyful performance will be the perfect soundtrack for a night under the stars.

Supporting The Cat Empire will be “the high priestess of Melbourne soul” (The Music) Kylie Auldist who released a brand new album in November last year called This Is What Happiness Looks Like.

Families and children can also join in the fun with their favourite ABC Kids stars from 6 – 7 March. This one-off weekend event will feature Justine Clarke, Jimmy Giggle, Dan Sultan and Pevan & Sarah as part of Kids at the Bowl.

In four shows only, Australia’s top children’s entertainers will perform a selection of their greatest hits in an all-singing, all-dancing, all-laughing hour of fun! There are very limited tickets available for the family shows so get in quick.

These March long weekend shows are presented in partnership with City of Melbourne.

Tickets will go on sale from 12pm, Friday 19 February via liveatthebowl.com.au

We’re excited to be welcoming visitors back to our venues in line with the most recent Victorian Government guidelines on COVID-19. We have opened our outdoor café Protagonist, the Sunday Markets as well as the Australian Music Vault. These openings coincided with the Live at the Bowl season, which officially kicked off on 8 January 2021.

While the ghost lights will stay on a little longer inside our venues, we will continue to offer audiences the chance to experience the wonder of the performing arts via our digital hub – Together With You. For more information including: our opening plans and related health and safety policies; bookings for free and ticketed events; and other digital content and experiences, please visit artscentremelbourne.com.au.

Middle East Super Brand MDLBEAST Launch Record Label

by the partae February 17, 2021
written by the partae
A Multiple Artist Album ‘Soundstorm Vol 1’ will be the 1st work from the newly formed label.
Globally renowned lifestyle and entertainment brand MDLBEAST is continuing to develop as it launches a brand new record label that will become the exciting new home for musical talent across the Arab region. The first release is a carefully curated showcase album of forward thinking music from global superstars named Soundstorm Volume 1 as a nod to the brand’s own game changing festival, Soundstorm. The first single from it, ‘Ringtone’ by R3HAB, comes with its own unique video and is released on February 26th while the full album arrives in April with tracks by superstars like Salvatore Ganacci, BUTCH and Afrojack and local rising talents like Cosmicat.
MDLBEAST is a fast evolving and influential brand now moving into showcasing emerging talent. MDLBEAST Records will unearth and nurture the best recording artists, DJs and producers from across the region and will eventually grow into a series of sub labels focussed on various vital sounds from underground deep house to techno to EDM and afrobeat. Unearthing untapped local talents and helping them grow into international names will always be a prime concern for the label.
There will also be regular flagship releases featuring international talent around the brand’s iconic events with styles including house, techno and EDM Style from both big global DJs and future stars of the Middle East alike.

Soundstorm Vol 1 will be composed of exclusive tracks from superstar international DJs, with each track benefitting from a bespoke global marketing campaign to drive awareness and streaming activity.
Talal Albahiti, Chief Operating Officer of MDLBEAST says – ‘’MDLBEAST is all about amplifying the unseen, building a platform for Arab Artists to showcase their talent to the world & bring international artists closer to arab audiences. Launching our label MDLBEAST Records is another big milestone on our journey to create cultural exchange through music. We are especially proud that our good friend and collaborator R3HAB will be the first artist to officially launch his single ‘Ringtone’ on MDLBEAST Records.”
MDLBEAST is the promoter of the unrivalled and record breaking Soundstorm, a bold and adventurous new festival for the region that set a new standard with its first edition in December 2019. For obvious reasons it was postponed in 2020 but hopes to be back this year with 400,000 more people and acts like David Guetta, Martin Garrix, R3hab, Steve Aoki, Tiësto, and Afrojack who all played in year one.
MDLBEAST are also behind the hugely popular virtual festival series ‘Freqways’, which united music lovers all over the world with a special focus on the Middle East in 2020 and into 2021. It is the fastest growing entertainment company in the region with a huge reach and great influence. Now it is putting all that knowledge, dedication and expertise to good use, showcasing and developing the ever growing pool of musical talent that is emerging in the Arab region. Through this label and the continuation of the festival, the aim is to really shine a light on the region’s rich and creative music scene at the sametime as helping it to continue to evolve, grow and move forward.
Further volumes will follow later in the year, with plans for a radio show, playlists, ‘Ringtone’ remix challenge and much more. But for now excitement is already building for this bold, new game changing project from the MDLBEAST team.

LÂLKA ANNOUNCES DEBUT EP ‘THE WAY MUSIC LOOKS’ OUT MARCH 17 NEW SINGLE ‘ANGEL/JEZEBEL’ OUT NOW

LÂLKA returns with new single ‘Angel/Jezebel‘ with the news of her debut EP, The Way Music Looks, out March 17. Listen and watch HERE.

Where ‘Atomic Blonde‘ was inspired by the intersection of fashion and music, ‘Angel/Jezebel‘ takes its influence from the Phoenician princess of the Old Testament, whose pop cultural reputation precedes her. She explains, “Jezebel. Painted in wicked light by the anachronism of men writing history. Yet, I always felt an affinity with this queen. Possibly because of the fact that as an immigrant living in a white-washed country, I instinctively empathise with her struggle to be accepted in her foreign home and her resolve to cling onto the traditions of her native culture. As a fashion lover, I take delight in the fact that she faced death with deliberate stylishness. Slay, Queen.”

For LÂLKA, Jezebel represents her own rumbling underbelly, an uncompromising assertiveness and rebellion that wrestles with the perceptions ascribed to the producer as soft spoken and sweet natured. Co-written with Ninajirachi and Muki, ‘Angel/Jezebel‘ takes aim at these one dimensional stereotypes of docility that disenfranchise young Asian women like her. This release sees the producer dismantle and reclaim these parts of herself on her own terms – one of the many waves of empowerment that runs deep across The Way Music Looks.

LÂLKA‘s debut EP is the product of unbridled self expression. A passionate and carefully crafted undertaking produced alongside a cast of collaborators including Ninajirachi, Muki, BRUX, Donatachi, Oh Boy, Trophie and Becki Whitton. Its electro-pop make-up traces its undercurrent of proving one’s self worth with resolute commentary on trying to belong while performing and living as an artist of colour in so called Australia.

The Way Music Looks is complete with a set of visualisers for its five song track list, produced entirely by LÂLKA. The artist will also release a photo book (digital and physical) that deep dives in the EP’s making, including behind the scenes photos and collage of Ableton stems, lyrics and more. The Way Music Looks is LÂLKA‘s formal introduction as a didactic musician and artist at the helm of her own making.

‘Angel/Jezebel‘ is out now, buy/stream it here.

The Music Victoria Board announced today that Simone Schinkel has been appointed as the organisation’s next CEO.
A professional arts leader, Simone brings with her a celebrated reputation for strategic sector development, and a commitment to equity and justice.
Simone comes to Music Victoria from Theatre Network Australia where, as General Manager, she drove the sectors’ COVID 19 response which centred on fundraising efforts and providing essential cash grants to those most impacted. One of her lasting legacies will be the formation of a national alliance of arts industry councils to provide a national advocacy platform. She holds a Master of Arts and Cultural Management, a Bachelor of Fine Arts in technical production, is an alumni of the Australia Council’s Emerging Leaders Development Program and Co-convenor of the Arts Industry Council of Victoria.
An unabashed music lover and supporter, Simone has been moved to tears by Kutcha Edwards singing an alternative national anthem, tried her hand at 6 different musical instruments, volunteered at community radio (4ZZZ), and even admits to dancing unashamedly to the Teeny Tiny Stevies.

Simone said – When I got this gig, I celebrated by grabbing a drink at the Lomond Hotel and checking in on their live music situation. I can’t wait to be more than just a punter. I’m looking forward to building on the impressive work of Paddy and Dale, and to driving the lasting change that is needed to see Victorian music flourish again.
Sally Howland – Chair, Music Victoria said – In Simone we have found the person to lead our organisation and sector through its next critical stage. COVID 19 has decimated our industry and Simone is absolutely the right person to drive our sector back to growth. Her astute thinking and  demonstrated abilities at capacity building gives the Music Victoria Board every confidence that she will be an ardent advocate on behalf of our membership, our stakeholders and our wider music community. We’re thrilled to have her at the helm.
Simone will begin with Music Victoria on International Women’s Day – 8th March 2020.
The Board extends its deepest gratitude to Dale Packard for his exemplary role in steering the organisation in recent months. Dale will assume his position as General Manager from March 8th.

Music Victoria is an independent, not-for-profit organisation and the state peak body for contemporary music. We represent musicians, venues, music businesses and professionals, and music lovers across the contemporary Victorian music community. Music Victoria provides advocacy on behalf of the music sector, actively supports the development of the Victorian music community, and celebrates and promotes Victorian music.

EX:RE Announce Ex:Re with 12 Ensemble Out this Friday 19 February Shares opening track ‘Where The Time Went’

Elena Tonra of Daughter resumes her Ex:Re moniker to present a reinterpretation of her debut solo album.

Ex:Re with 12 Ensemble, released digitally on 19th February 2021, is a collaboration between Tonra, classical composer Josephine Stephenson and one of the UK’s leading string orchestras, 12 Ensemble.
Originally released in 2018, Ex:Re (pronounced “Ex Ray” and meaning “regarding Ex”) laid bare Tonra’s unfiltered internal monologue after the end of a relationship. Containing her most personal lyrics to date and brought into being with the help of Stephenson and producer/drummer Fabian Prynn, Ex:Re struck a chord with the broken-hearted and brought closure to a chapter in Tonra’s life.

Ex:Re with 12 Ensemble reimagines and complements its predecessor. It was recorded by Fabian Prynn during performances at Kings Place (the multi-arts venue in London’s King’s Cross neighbourhood) on the 30th November 2019, where Tonra was joined onstage by Stephenson on piano and the 12-piece string orchestra, 12 Ensemble.

Josephine Stephenson, a celebrated composer, arranger and performer, was approached by Kings Place to curate an event for their “Venus Unwrapped” 2019 season. Stephenson saw space in the programming for a live performance that bridged the gap between the classical and non-classical worlds, and having recently been involved with Ex:Re, collaborating once more with Tonra made perfect sense.

Stephenson’s new arrangements of the original Ex:Re album into classical form strip back the songs, heightening the emotion and vulnerability of the lyrics. “Working with acoustic instruments was an opportunity to add subtle, yet tangible dynamic details to highlight Elena’s words. As the Ex:Re songs are often built from loops, I enjoyed exploring the multitude of possible variations and reinventions within these, adding counter-melodies and making small changes in harmony or voicing. After touring with the Ex:Re band for a year, I knew the songs inside out, and had already started expanding and orchestrating them in my head. I also felt fearless knowing I was writing for the 12 Ensemble, who are all exceptionally talented musicians and comfortable in all sorts of genres.“

Tonra and Stephenson found respite in the recordings months after the Kings Place performance. “We were mixing the record while concerts and events around the world were being cancelled and postponed, so it was really moving to listen to the audio over and over during that time. The sound of a room filled with people was, and is, something we were all greatly missing.” says Tonra.

Ex:Re with 12 Ensemble, mixed by Jonathan Lefèvre-Reich, warps the space between audience and performer. It places the listener in the centre of the music, surrounded by a semi-circular wall of string sounds, to recreate the experience of the performance from up close. “There is also some magic in there” says Tonra, “Jonathan added some beautiful moments of story-telling in the mix. On New York, for example, the strings suddenly feel as though they are dripping down the sides of your head.”

Peter Noble OAM, Bluesfest Festival Director and Chairman of the Bluesfest Group of Companies announced this morning: “The NSW Government has indicated that, if the current COVID-19 situation continues in NSW, Bluesfest would be permitted to proceed, following our comprehensive COVID-19 safety plan. This is a great day, not only for Bluesfest, but also for the Australian Live Music Industry and our unrelenting efforts to get back to presenting Live Music Safely. Whilst our capacity, stages and campgrounds will be approximately 50% of the numbers we have had in the past, it is great to know there is a future for our industry, and that we have been given the opportunity to present Bluesfest 2021 at a level not seen at festivals in Australia since the summer of 2019/20. We were heartbroken after last year’s cancellation three weeks out from the festival, due to NSW government orders. However, our resolve to present our beloved, multi award-winning festival resulted in our commencing work with Riskworks to create a COVID-19 Safety Plan in May of 2020. We first lodged it with government in August and have continued to refine the plan since that time. We have worked closely with NSW Health in developing the plan and are extremely thankful for their ongoing advice. Certainly, the NSW Events Task Force and the offices of Stuart Ayres, Minister for Tourism and Major Events NSW; John Barilaro, the Deputy Premier NSW; Ben Franklin, NSW Parliamentary Secretary for the Arts; the office of Don Harwin, NSW Minister for the Arts and Paul Fletcher, Federal Minister for the Arts are to be commended for working closely with us on a weekly basis to achieve this milestone result for the music loving people of Australia,” said Bluesfest Festival Director Peter Noble. Bluesfest is a five-time winner of Best Major Event at the NSW Tourism Awards, and a member of the NSW Tourism Hall of Fame, as well as being nominated nine times as Best International Music Festival in the Pollstar Awards which take place in Los Angeles, including their 30th Anniversary edition 2019. “We have an All-Aussie lineup playing at Easter at our purpose-built event site, The Byron Events Farm (formerly Tyagarah Tea Tree Farm) in Byron Shire, 15 minutes’ drive north from Byron Bay. Bluesfest is headlined by an amazing lineup of talent, including Jimmy Barnes, Tash Sultana, Ocean Alley, Ziggy Alberts, The Teskey Brothers, John Butler, Xavier Rudd, The Cat Empire, Kasey Chambers, The Waifs, The Church, John Williamson, Ian Moss, Kev Carmody, Vika & Linda, Chain, Backsliders, Melbourne Ska Orchestra, Blue King Brown, Kate Miller-Heidke, Dami Im, Weddings Parties Anything, Russell Morris, Briggs, Jon Stevens and many, many more.  At the moment we are 80% sold out and our Friday, Saturday and Sunday days are expected to sell out” Noble said. “We will be inspecting the 150-page COVID-19 Safety Plan in depth and will make a further announcement on how Bluesfest will be presented in a safe manner next week. What we can say is that the plan is created in a way where we can adapt to the requirements of the NSW Health Department should there be a need to create higher levels of safety for the public on site, and, of course, we are also hopeful, that conditions will be further relaxed should there be no further community transmissions. The good news is you won’t need to wear a mask currently whilst attending. We are looking forward to seeing your smiling faces as you experience the best in Australian music at an outdoor fully seated event. There are so many people to thank who took part in working with us in getting to this point. The artists and their agents and managers, the media for their ongoing support, our suppliers and of course the Bluesfest Team who never wavered, well … only sometimes, in their conviction to produce Bluesfest at Easter (April 1-5) this year. But number one is, our gratitude to the music fans, who purchased the tickets from the moment we went on sale and who will join us in making history as major live music events return in Australia.” Let’s bring back the music ! GOOD INTENT ANNOUNCE NEW MANAGEMENT SIGNINGS SAINT LANE, CLOSE COUNTERS AND FANGZ, PLUS INTERNAL PROMOTIONS

by the partae February 16, 2021
written by the partae

Sydney-based artist services agency Good Intent have just announced new management signings Saint Lane, Close Counters and FANGZ, as well as internal promotions within their PR and Label Services divisions.

“We’re ecstatic to reveal the new additions to our family in Lane, Close Counters and FANGZ,” says newly appointed Artist & PR Services Manager, Nick Moran. “The team and myself have been friends and worked with all three artists in various capacities over some time now, so to be able to represent their careers as managers is an absolute honour!” he continues.

Bursting onto the scene in mid-2019, Gold Coast-based New Zealand born artist Saint Lane quickly garnered praise from triple j, The Needle Drop, NME, Spotify, Apple Music, The Guardian, GQ, Billboard and Beats 1 with Briggs. In the live arena Saint Lane has traversed the country supporting the likes of Lime Cordiale, JID, Earl Sweatshirt, Dune Rats, Baker Boy and Bootleg Rascal.

“I’m super excited to work with Rob and all the legends at Good Intent,” says Lane. “I’ve been searching far and wide for someone as crazy and ambitious as me and I think Mr. Worldwide Bobby Dazzler is the man for the job. This is like when South Sydney signed Latrell” he added.

Melbourne duo Close Counters’ signature soundscape at the crossroads of house neo-soul, hip-hop and disco have earned them nods from tastemakers XLR8R, Indie Shuffle, NME, BBC Radio 1, BBC Radio 6, Gilles Peterson and triple j. The pair have already ticked off Splendour in the Grass, Falls Festival, Meredith Music Festival, Strawberry Fields and remixed the likes of Bag Raiders, 30/70 and most recently Young Franco and Denzel Curry’s hit ‘Fallin’ Apart’.

In 2021 the pair have sold out all three of their Melbourne Music Week events at Colour Club without announcing the shows to their fanbase and last week played a to a full house at Sidney Myer Music Bowl with The Murlocs.

“Having worked with Rick since our Meredith Festival slot while he was at UNDR Ctrl a little over a year ago, we’re keen to continue the relationship and be joining the Good Intent family at such an exciting time for the crew as we roll into a big 2021 with a heap of new music!” says Close Counters. “Rick was a much-needed companion to help us navigate the process of writing and releasing music over the course of the lockdowns that occurred in 2020.”

Also joining them are one of Sydney’s most exciting new punk bands, FANGZ. The group have toured the country selling out headline shows and shared stages with Gyroscope, Cancer Bats and Comeback Kid. They’ve also received praise via triple j, Spotify, Apple Music, Pilerats, Blunt Magazine, Wall of Sound, Hysteria Magazine, Music Feeds and The Music. Their new single ‘Self Medicate’ is due for release on February 26.

“We’re absolutely stoked we finally have somebody to do all of our work for us,” says FANGZ. “It’s also pretty rad to be surrounded by other artists and creatives we like that have the same ‘get stuff done’ attitude” they added.

In line with the artist signing announcements, the agency is excited to reveal that two team members will step up into division management roles. Long serving Publicist Nick Moran has been promoted to Artist & PR Services Manager, while Rick Bridgman (ex. Chugg Music, UNDR Ctrl) is set to undertake the new role of Artist & Label Services Manager.

“Our PR division has long been a staple since our inception,” says Bridgman. “Now with the addition of third-party playlist pitching, tastemaker DJ servicing and digital marketing, we can offer artists and labels a one-stop point for all their promo needs” he continues.

The three new signees will join current management clients Bootleg Rascal and Down For Tomorrow. Current and previous PR and Label Services clients include the likes of BMG, Sony, Universal, Handsome Tours, Astral People, Chugg Music, American Hi-Fi (USA), Bas (USA), Freddie Gibbs (USA), Bag Raiders, Gyroscope, Harts, Citizen Kay, RedHook and SCABZ.

Good Intent first launched in late-2018 and offers a range of services across artist management, PR, radio plugging, club promotions, playlist pitching, digital marketing, worldwide blogs and label services.

The agency also recently launched Good Loco – a photography and videography suite and space for hire located in Marrickville, Sydney.

HAYLEY MARY
SHARES NEW SINGLE AND VIDEO
‘WOULD YOU THROW A DIAMOND?’

I OH YOU are excited to share ‘Would You Throw A Diamond?’, an explosive rock banger from Hayley Mary. Premiered by Richard Kingsmill on triple j, the new single comes with an energetic, 70’s-tinged video that features bold fashion moments and Hayley’s iconic dance moves. Stemming from an old idea of Hayley Mary’s partner Johnny, ‘Would You Throw A Diamond?’ is an ode to all the songs that almost didn’t make it.

“‘Would You Throw A Diamond?’ started as an old idea of my boyfriend Johnny’s that he had all but thrown out. I could see it was a proper diamond in the dirt that just needed brushing off and shining up.

I changed up the vibe and added some new parts and lyrics to bring out the idea of thinking first before throwing away a thing of inherent value, just because you’re not sure what to do with it right then and there. You never know what new element is around the corner that can bring out the best in something old. So, we named the song ‘Would You Throw A Diamond?’ in the spirit of what the song was about and the process by which it came together.” – Hayley Mary

VIDEO: Hayley Mary – ‘Would You Throw A Diamond?’

On the making of the video that premiered overnight on Gigwise (UK), Hayley reflects: “My dad brought me up to have an almost unhealthy sympathy for the magical old objects one can find in a thrift store. He loved old cars and would never throw anything out, always seeing the treasure in other people’s trash. Pretty much everything that appears in the video is pre-loved or pre-lived in or a little dilapidated, but beautiful Lucy Knox, the director even had a pile of old film lying around at her house, which we also used.”

‘Would You Throw A Diamond?’ follows previous single ‘The Chain’ – Hayley’s first single since her debut EP The Piss, The Perfume was released to critical acclaim last year – which saw acclaim from The Line of Best Fit, Paste, Idolator and NME, along with an accompanying video which gained over 40 thousand streams in its first two weeks. The track was closely followed by ‘The Chain (Nude Version)’ which has taken off at streaming platforms, drawing an even wider audience through inclusion on a multitude of acoustic playlists.

‘Would You Throw A Diamond?’ is a vibrant reminder of Hayley Mary’s intrinsic ability to create and evolve, and while as a solo artist she might be new to the scene, she is no stranger to compelling song writing.

Hayley Mary recently performed live on Tik Tok as a part of Isolaid Festival, after freshly finishing a nine-date tour of Victoria and is excited at the prospect of taking her live show across state lines this year.

PEARLS Return with double A-side singles ‘Come See Me’ & ‘Heartbreaker’ Featured in new ABC TV / Netflix series Why Are You Like This

PRAISE FOR PEARLS

“70s glam-pop revivalists Pearls stomp their way to the centre, not too far off from the tough-girl vibe of Blondie.” – Spin

“Leaves one with an insatiable need for repeat spins.” – The Music

“If Twin Peaks’ Bobby Briggs and James Hurley put aside all of their differences and started a band (inspired by the love, loss, and life of Laura), they’d sound exactly like broody three-piece Pearls.” – NYLON

Melbourne’s twisted glam pop-inspired Pearls have returned with double A-side singles ‘Come See Me’ and ‘Heartbreaker’ – released today via Dot Dash / Remote Control Records. Both tracks are taken from their second record due for release later in 2021.

Joining frontman Ryan Caesar and drummer Ellice Blakeney, Pearls have expanded to include new members James L. Payne, Sam Wass & Zoe L. Hunting.

In the band’s own words ‘Come See Me’ was “written by two people who had just broken up. It’s a tug of war between rude guitars and barbarous lyrics. A spat, finished resolutely in under 3 mins.” On the other hand, ‘Heartbreaker’ is about “being left bewildered in the ashes of something you thought was going to be with you forever but ends up turning you into a stranger in the eyes of someone you loved.”

‘Come See Me’ also features in the premiere of a new ABC TV / Netflix series Why Are You Like This – tonight at 8.45PM on ABC iview and ABC TV Plus. Created by rising comedian Naomi Higgins, Humyara Mahbub and Aunty Donna’s Mark Samual Bonanno, the show follows best friends as they navigate their 20s in Melbourne. ‘Big Shot’ from Pearls’ debut album Pretend You’re Mine serves as the opening credits theme song. Watch the trailer.

The art of performance photography in collaboration with one of Australia’s leading performance photographers Jeff Busby. By exploring highlights from the rich photographic holdings of Arts Centre Melbourne’s Australian Performing Arts Collection, together with some favourites from his own archive, Busby gives us insight into both the art of photography and the world of the performing arts. “I thought an important factor in this project was how we were able to cross through time and find a commonality in what these images are trying to tell us,” said Jeff Busby. “One of the most fascinating aspects was looking at the Australian Performing Arts Collection and the historic sweep of their work and being shown how performance photography has followed the progression of the performing arts in Australia.” Framing the Stage was developed during Victoria’s second-wave lockdown in 2020 and opened up a dialogue between Busby and the Assistant Curator for the Australian Performing Arts Collection Ian Jackson. Exploring the archive together, they uncovered a number of special moments from Australia’s performing arts history.   “At a time when live performance has been limited, we wanted to remind people of what is so exciting and compelling about the performing arts. Performance photography is like capturing lightning in a bottle, the photographer needs to capture a performer, their role, and the feel of the production, all within a single image,” said Jackson.   “The Australian Performing Arts Collection has a wealth of amazing photographs, covering more than a hundred years of ballet, circus, dance, theatre and opera. We knew that a practising performance photographer like Jeff would bring new insights to them, based on his many years of experience.” “We wanted to take our audiences backstage and behind the camera to see his work - and the photographs in the collection - through his eyes.” The project has resulted in a robustly curated exploration of photographic images, styles and history, combined with unique insights from Busby.    “I found it an extremely rewarding process and allowed me to reflect in a way I perhaps hadn’t been able to until recently. In particular delving into the collection and opening up a whole gamut of thoughts and how the photos over time have fit into the bigger picture,” said Busby. “These moments only happened once, and through these moments, with layering and attention you are able to capture a moment in time which reflects a complex matrix of performance. We’ve managed to uncover and present photos that entice, entertain and have a timeless quality to them.” Online exhibitions have been an incredibly successful initiative for the Australian Performing Arts Collection, allowing audiences all over the world unprecedented access to this rare trove of objects. Framing the Stage adds to the developing wealth of knowledge available through their online portal. You can access Framing the Stage and other exhibitions here. We’re excited to be welcoming visitors back to our venues in line with the most recent Victorian Government guidelines on COVID-19. However, following the Victorian Government’s announcement that the state is returning to Stage 4 lockdowns from 11:59pm Friday 12 February, events scheduled between Saturday 13 and Wednesday 17 February will not proceed as planned. MONTREAL TRIO PLANET GIZA DROP NEW EP DON’T THROW ROCKS AT THE MOON

PRAISE FOR PLANET GIZA

“A fresh direction”

“Real artists rather than just young, talented beatmakers”
XLR8R

“The next big thing out of Montreal”
Highsnobiety

Montreal alternative hip-hop trio Planet Giza continue their hot streak with new EP Don’t Throw Rocks At The Moon, out now. Listen HERE.

Expertly marrying classic hip-hop sensibilities with fresh energy and a zest for life, Don’t Throw Rocks At The Moon was co-produced by frequent collaborator JMF. Opening with the slick, funk-drenched ‘Icarus‘, the track is an ode to the pitfalls of a fast-paced lifestyle. Next up is the group’s recent bass-heavy single ‘When The Moving Stops‘. Underpinned by the soaring vocals of Planet Giza’s own Tony Stone, the track has enjoyed support from Jack Saunders, DJ Target and Jamz Supernova of BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra respectively, as well as support from Apple Music and Kiss Fresh.

Elsewhere, ‘Start Over‘ and ‘Limb‘ then see the trio demonstrate their soulful side before lead track ‘Rocky Road‘, featuring Boston-born rapper Cousin Stizz, channels a deep, emotive trap vibe which was co-produced by FREAKEY. Closing things out, ‘Why Do You Run‘ combines the smoothest of production with poignant lyricism.

“DTRATM is a small trip into the nightlife. This body of work takes us through the emotions one may experience when dealing with a lifestyle most consider fast paced. Several realizations are made and lessons are learned after colliding with the moon,” Planet Giza explain. "Ultimately we realize that the cycle never changes. The moon remains even after you’re gone. Trying to control it only ends up consuming you. So you shouldn’t throw rocks at it.”

Comprising members Rami B, Tony Stone and DoomX, Planet Giza is the genre-bending crew who reflect their multicultural background through a repertoire of diverse sounds. They attribute this versatility to the diverse community of Montreal, as well as their widely-varying musical influences.

Don’t Throw Rocks At The Moon follows Planet Giza‘s acclaimed 2019 LP Added Sugar co-produced by KAYTRANADA – a close friendship which stems back to 2017 when they collaborated on ‘Domina‘ taken off their debut EP Zayad City. Since the release of Added Sugar, Planet Giza have performed at Montreal Jazz Festival, collaborated with Mick Jenkins while also producing GoldLink‘s ‘Ridd‘, which he performed on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

A bold, coming-of-age EP, Don’t Throw Rocks At The Moon captures the essence of the Planet Giza sound.

BROTHER

FROM UPCOMING ALBUM

INTO THE GREAT UNKNOWN

SET FOR RELEASE MARCH 5

+ ANNOUNCE VICTORIAN REGIONAL TOUR

MEDIA RELEASE:: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, FRIDAY FEBRUARY 12

Pierce Brothers have just dropped their new single Brother, a crescendo-building indie folk anthem, out today, February 12.  The final track to be released before they drop their new album, Brother focuses on being away from family, a theme especially prescient now when so many family and friends are being kept apart as we head into the second year of COVID-19 [Listen: BROTHER].  Brother is accompanied by a light-hearted performance-based music video which sees the band constantly interrupted by their brother.  Brilliantly spliced with sweet, nostalgic footage from their childhood, the clip is the perfect trimming to such a personal song. [Watch: BROTHER]. The single is the last to be released from the Pierce Brothers’ highly anticipated sophomore album, Into The Great Unknown which debuts on March 5, 2021. They have also today announced the first leg of their national regional tour, kicking off with their Victorian show dates through March, April and May, featuring shows at The Espy on April 24 and The Corner Hotel on April 30, their first headline shows in Melbourne in over twelve months.

Written and performed for years before they finally put it down in the studio, Brother displays the anthemic build and crescendo for which Pierce Brothers have become known during their live performances. Opening with a quiet, reverb heavy and overdriven acoustic guitar, the track soon delves through rich harmonies, as drums and percussion are slowly introduced throughout the hook-laden chorus. The tune then kicks it into the next gear with the drop of the electric guitar solo before jumping up the octave and galloping to the final verse and chorus. Produced by Jan Skubiszewski (John Butler, The Cat Empire), mixed by Phil Threlfall (Illy, Ed Sheeran), and mastered by Joe Carra at Crystal Mastering (The Teskey Brothers, The Cat Empire), Brother is a slow burn anthem that leads to the kind of massive payoff that the Pierce Brothers have dedicated their careers to performing, and will have fans of Lumineers and Mumford and Sons jumping and singing by the final chorus.

Filmed by Dara Munnis (Tash Sultana, Teskey Brothers) and directed by Patrick Pierce himself, the music video for Brother sees a delightfully playful take on sibling rivalry, cut up with old home footage of the brothers as children, in a song that seeks to emphasise the importance of family.  “We wanted to juxtapose the earnestness of the song with a bit of a piss-take,“ explains Pat, “We went in there with the intention of playing the whole thing straight, but then when Justin (our older brother) said he could drop in, we thought it would just be way funnier if we tried to do an honest-to-God straight performance, and he just walks through and messes it up for us. We couldn’t stop laughing at the thought of it so we figured, why not?”

Brother is the fourth track to be released from Pierce Brothers much anticipated sophomore album Into The Great Unknown, set for release March 5. Recorded at Jan Skubiszewski’s Red Moon Studios in Gisborne between the two Victorian lockdowns in 2020, the new album explores previously uncharted territory for the twins. “With strings arrangements, female backing vocals, and larger performances than we’ve ever done in the studio, this album is striving to be something grander than what has come before,” says Jack, “The lack of endless touring paved the way for a deeply thought-out experience.”

Along with their new single, the brothers have released a run of Victorian regional dates to coincide with the release of the new album. With borders opening, expect new shows to be added to the already stacked Victorian tour run. “In 2021 we’re planning on an entire regional Australia run!” Pat tells us, “but the problem is that if we announce tickets too far in advance, there’s risk of border closures between the announce and the date of the gig. We want to avoid all postponing/cancellations of shows so this year it’s announce and GO!”

SECOND IDOL

UNVEIL EVOCATIVE DEBUT SINGLE ‘WHITE NOISE’

SUPPORT FOR ‘WHITE NOISE’

“Charged bursts of captivating alt-rock-meets-punk-pop that sits in-line with long-time influences from Sonic Youth and Savages.”
Pilerats (AUS)

Sydney-based alternative-rock trio Second Idol have just revealed their fervent debut single ‘White Noise’ – mixed and mastered by Nick Franklin (Peking Duk, Polish Club, Clews).

Opening with menacing guitars and steadfast drums, ‘White Noise’ immediately envelops the listener in a hypnotic trance as lead singer Kate Olivia’s snarling vocals exude effortless presence. The tracks lyrical themes hammer home its commanding subject matter, as its forthright choruses propel the track towards its rewarding finale.

Kate talks about the meaning behind ‘White Noise’:

“’White Noise’ is a contemplation of body politics, women’s bodies and misogyny. It emerged out of my observations of comments often made by cis men on social media regarding the policing of women and gender non-conforming bodies. The lyrics are written in a way that I’m having a conversation with someone in a bar, and I’m calling them out on their misinformed views and telling them that ‘we need to take this conversation outside’, then they just get sledgehammered with a barrage of guitars.”

Second Idol consists of Kate Olivia, Theia Joyeaux and Maxine Gillon, who take inspiration from alternative-rock luminaires Savages, Placebo and Sonic Youth. To coincide with the release, the band will launch ‘White Noise’ at Frankies Pizza on February 27, with a further performance at Mardi Gras for Queer As Fvck in early March.

Outside of the band, the trio are proud members of Sydney’s LGBTQIA community and work with organisations such as Queer As Fvck, as well as queer and mental health charity Baylin’s Gift, located in lead singer Kate Olivia’s hometown of Kempsey on the Mid North Coast of NSW. “I’ve experienced prejudice and negativity in relation to my gender, sexuality and cultural background, so I’m reflexively a supporter of minority groups and the pursuit of equality” Kate adds.

In the coming weeks, Second Idol will reveal an accompanying music video for ‘White Noise’.

lovedavid, e4444e and Skip Willcox, three of Newcastle’s most bold and experimental artists, present Invisible Stone, a one-of-a-kind production that will take place at the iconic Civic Theatre on Thursday the 18th of February as part of the City of Newcastle’s New Annual festival. Tickets available here.

Combining art, sound and dance to create a fully immersive experience, Invisible Stone guides the audience on an ethereal journey through the unknown. A true collaborative effort, lovedavid (creative director), e4444e (sound design) and Skip Willcox (choreography) blend sonic compositions with distinct visual environments to explore the interplay between the cosmic and the mundane; a shiver with no chill; a lump in the throat; a premonition. lovedavid, e4444e and Skip Willcox pose the question of what is beyond and within us, as the intertwining of these unique artists’ respective disciplines unfold onstage.

Invisible Stone was inspired by Ryōan-ji, a Japanese Zen temple garden featuring distinctive rock formations. The garden is said to be “an abstract composition of ‘natural’ objects in space, a composition whose function is to incite meditation.” lovedavid explores this concept to investigate emotions, feelings and connections, challenging the audience to question what exists in our lives that we can’t see. What doesn’t exist that we can see? “It’s freeing when you think about it but challenging to grasp – it can send you the other way,” lovedavid says. Through this absorbing examination, a loose narrative unfolds between the seen and unseen, constantly checking in on one another.

About the artists:

lovedavid is a multi-disciplinary artist working between childish dreams and memories on the deathbed. Recent creative projects have involved collaborating with Japanese artist KOM_i, design and identity work for The Anti-Annual 2020 and Kudos Gallery, animation for SYDFEST and the launch of KUFKUF, a sustainable fashion brand. On Invisible Stone, lovedavid says “everybody has been responding to the information with a sense of doing so on their own terms. We’re travelling on different paths towards the same horizon.” Keep up to date with lovedavid here.

e4444e is an exploratory musician whose debut album Coldstream Road was released in 2020 via one of Australia’s longest-running indie labels, Spunk Records. Described by FBi Radio’s music director as “one of the most exciting acts to come out of Australia in the last few years”, creates a soundscape as celestial as it is grounded in the earth.
For Invisible Stone, e4444e has composed all new work, leaning towards ambient and textural soundscapes with an emphasis on simplicity and repetition, which e4444e’s Romy Church says, “weaves between instrumentals and songs written on the guitar, all the time trying to lead the listener somewhere without knowing where they are going, finding themselves suddenly arriving.” Keep up to date with e4444e on Facebook, Instagram and Bandcamp.

Skip Willcox is an independent dance artist based in Australia, who has engaged with  having resident and international choreographers and organisations including Tanzcompagnie Giessen/Stadt Theatre Giessen, Catapult Dance and Sydney Dance Company. As an emerging choreographer, Skip has created and performed solo performances, site-specific and collaborative works with international multi-disciplinary artists and composers. Skip’s work has been performed at QVB Sydney, Newcastle Art Gallery, The Lock-Up Contemporary Art Space, Critical Path (Sydney) and Lake Macquarie City Art Gallery.
