A Comprehensive Musical Guide: How to Start Playing Your Favorite Instrument?

by the partae January 11, 2022
written by the partae

Author: Allen Brown

Music is an art that is easily accessible to everyone. There are many different instruments, and it can be difficult when you do not know where to start. This guide will walk you through the process step by step so that you can enjoy playing music in no time at all!

1.Pick the equipment you want

The first step is to pick the equipment you want. This doesn’t have to be expensive, but it should work for your style of playing and comfort level. As mentioned at https://www.allstringed.com, if you prefer a guitar, you can purchase an acoustic, electric, or classical guitar. Learning guitar is not difficult, so you can pick any style.

If you prefer a piano or keyboard, go with an electronic model that is easy to use and has multiple features. You can also find portable keyboards that are lightweight and easy to carry with you.

If you want to try a different instrument, such as the violin or banjo, do some research on the best models for your playing level and budget. It’s essential to get quality equipment, so you don’t develop bad habits from the start.

Once you have chosen your equipment, take some time to read the included instructions carefully. Familiarize yourself with all of the features to use them effectively when practicing.

2. Learn the basics

Once you choose an easy instrument to start with, it’s time to learn the basics. You can go through tutorials online or join a music school near you for better guidance. If you’re getting started on an instrument, it would be best to take classes from professional teachers who have ample experience teaching beginners how to play musical instruments.

You may also want to read about the instrument you have chosen to play. This will help you understand how it works and what techniques are used in playing it.

There are plenty of instructional materials out there that can help beginners learn the ropes quickly. YouTube is one great source for free video tutorials, while books and DVDs usually come with instructional audio CDs. If you’re willing to spend some money, online lessons could be a good option for you – many teachers offer Skype sessions or interactive live streams that make learning easy and fun.

3.Practice!

Once you’ve learned the basics of playing your instrument, it’s time to practice some more! The only way you’ll get better is by actually getting out there and practicing. Even if you don’t feel like doing so or have a busy schedule, remember that this step will be the most important one in becoming a master at what you do.

For your practice, you can start with simple things. Make sure you do your warm-up exercises, as these are the best ways to ensure that you don’t injure yourself while playing. Another thing is making sure that you practice regularly and without fail—for example, if possible every day or at least three times a week.

If this sounds like too much for now, start practicing once a week until it becomes more natural for you to play daily!

You can bring friends to your practice sessions to make it more fun, too. The better you get at playing your instrument, the easier it will be for you to find people interested in learning how to do so!

4.Perform

It will help if you find a way to perform your music. You can do this by:

  • joining an ensemble and performing regularly as much as possible
  • playing for smaller groups of friends and family
  • performing at open mic nights in coffee shops or other similar venues

If you can get yourself out there, it will also help with a recording that people can listen to. This could be creating a YouTube channel or doing it somewhere else online where others can access it easily.

Performing is a great way to improve your skills and get feedback from others.

5.Know how to take care of your equipment

Music equipment is an investment, and like any other investment, you want to take care of it to last. Ensure to read the manufacturer’s instructions on cleaning and storing your instrument.

Therefore, after your practice session, make sure to clean your instrument. Don’t use water on the drum heads; instead, use a damp cloth or a particular cleaning solution if needed. If you want to be careful with your cymbals, wipe them down with rubbing alcohol after each practice session and before putting them away in their case.

Learning to play musical equipment can be very rewarding. It can allow you to communicate your feelings and emotions through melodies and rhythms. Not only that but learning an instrument can also provide a great form of exercise for the mind and body. By following the guide above, you can learn to start playing your favorite instrument.

Let’s Eat Grandma share video for new single ‘Happy New Year’

by the partae January 6, 2022

PRAISE FOR I’M ALL EARS (2018)

“remarkable”
The Guardian (5*)

“I’m All Ears doesn’t just defy demographic stereotypes—it sounds like nothing else in pop right now.”

Pitchfork (Best New Music)

“This is a thrilling, fascinating album that continually startles: it’s a bold step forward and one that feels like a glimpse into the future.”
NME (4*)

“[M]asterful manipulations of mood and texture […] a second effort that exceeds expectations”
TheMusic.com.au (4*)
Let’s Eat Grandma, the duo composed of songwriters, multi-instrumentalists and vocalists Rosa Walton and Jenny Hollingworth, today share ‘Happy New Year‘, an upbeat, blissful song celebrating friendship, and the opening track from their upcoming much anticipated third full-length album, Two Ribbons. Co-produced by David Wrench and Let’s Eat Grandma, Two Ribbons will be released on April 8 via Transgressive.

Rosa Walton said the following about the track: “‘Happy New Year’ is a celebratory song written about my relationship with my best friend. I wrote it after a breakdown between us that lasted for a long period of time, to communicate to her how important she is to me and how our bond and care for each other goes much deeper than this difficult time. I used the setting of New Year as both an opportunity for reflection, looking back nostalgically through childhood memories that we shared, and to represent the beginning of a fresh chapter for us. I’d been struggling to come to terms with the fact that our relationship had changed, but as the song and time progresses I come to accept that it couldn’t stay the way it was when we were kids forever, and start to view it as a positive thing – because now we have been able to grow into our own individual selves.”

With a video featuring the band embroiled in a tennis match-turned-party, ‘Happy New Year’ is the third song to be heard from Two Ribbons following the album’s stunning, melancholic title track ‘Two Ribbons‘ and the ethereal, glistening pop song, ‘Hall Of Mirrors‘, about a beautiful, intense moment remembered, with the latter attracting airplay on triple j and both tracks across community radio nationwide.

Let’s Eat Grandma released their second album, I’m All Ears, in 2018. It came out to a blaze of critical glory, thrilled fans who’d been with them since I, Gemini, and won them interested new listeners as they widened their musical scope. They won Album of the Year at the Q Awards along with many end of year list placements, toured relentlessly, played a life-changing set at Coachella, and then… they disappeared.

Two Ribbons tells the story of the last three years from both Jenny and Rosa’s points of view. As a body of work, it is astonishing: a dazzling, heart-breaking, life-affirming and mortality-facing record that reveals their growing artistry and ability to parse intense feeling into lyrics so memorable you’d scribble them on your backpack. The band has been through a lot in the last three years, and Two Ribbons is the artefact that signals some kind of progression out of distressing times; a story of loss, change, and of survival; a proof of life.

Such was the intensity of Jenny and Rosa’s bond that when they promoted their first album, they positioned themselves as twins. Friends since early childhood, they had graduated into a teenage friendship that was unbreakable and practically telepathic. Those intense and all-consuming friendships are subject to the same ebbs and flows as any other, and as they grew older the two began to find themselves as individuals, tastes differing here, reactions jarring there. There was a time when both felt a little trapped, and needed to fight to create the space to express themselves as individuals within their relationship.

And so the partnership began to fray. Two Ribbons can be heard as a series of letters between the two of them, taking the place of conversations as they try to make sense of the rift in their relationships. It’s a cathartic blood-letting and a devastating realisation about the fickleness of life. Though it is still very much a Let’s Eat Grandma album, for the first time there are Rosa’s songs and Jenny’s songs.

Both Rosa and Jenny found themselves more involved in the production of this album, experimenting with new sounds and diverse instrumentations within the studio, collaborating with David Wrench, also the primary producer of I’m All Ears. On this record Rosa in particular threw herself into the behind the scenes work and driving her own sonic agenda, whilst Jenny sought to synthesise new influences to forge new spaces artistically for the group.

The backdrop to Two Ribbons is two women navigating their way through a lot, for the first time without the tiller of each other to guide them. The songs they wrote and eventually brought to each other are little pockets of light in the darkness, signals in the night to show each other how they were feeling and what they had lost.

Two Ribbons is an album that treads a fine line expressing the most intimate feelings of, whilst making space for, the different perspectives of two women; an album that says this is not the beginning or the end but part of a never-ending circle. It’s cyclical in nature; there is sadness, and pain, and joy, and hope – and knows that no matter what detours we take, we are all connected.

GHEIST unveil music video for ‘We Are Not Alone’ promoting awareness around Mental Health

by the partae January 6, 2022
written by the partae
The Music video aims to drive awareness around the subject of Mental Health in a reflection of the past 18+ months

WATCH: https://vimeo.com/568527183/b32709860a

Following on from their essential Zukunft album on their own Radau Music label in November, GHEIST now serves up a hugely poignant new video for ‘We Are Not Alone.’ The video touches on the subject of mental heath, which is close to the German pair’s heart as they recently lost a close friend and tour manager due to suicide.

The album explored a world of emotional, colorful, diverse, and delicately crafted electronic music with hints of melancholic optimism. This single is another standout that finds the duo really evaluate their sound and skills to new levels. It features their signature mix of  breakbeats, beautifully crafted synthesizers and exciting vocals delivered with real melancholy. They touch on the difficulties of being alone while the video shows someone in isolation at home and looking lost.

Say the pair, “Coming out of these exhausting and strange past 18 month there appears to be a topic that has always been around us but seems now bigger than ever. We’ve been isolated, we’ve been alone and highly in danger of suffering from depression. It’s a matter of the heart for us to talk about this sad phenomenon and get loud about it. We just recently lost a close friend who committed suicide and no one saw it coming.”

“We see it as our duty as artists to point out this problem and create a safe place to open up and destigmatize mental illness as such and built awareness especially for people with suicidal tendencies.  We are about to head into winter and we are still in a post pandemic phase as a society. We should sensitize ourselves for those who need to be seen and make sure that no one feels alone or left behind. Please let us all take care of each other and make the time to listen because WE ARE NOT ALONE.”
‘We Are Not Alone’ carries a vital universal message that should be shared as far and wide as possible.

EELS release new single ‘Amateur Hour’

EELS
RELEASE NEW SINGLE ‘AMATEUR HOUR‘

NEW ALBUM EXTREME WITCHCRAFT
OUT JANUARY 28 ON PIAS / E WORKS RECORDS

Ahead of the release of their anticipated fourteenth studio album Extreme Witchcraft, out January 28 via [PIAS] and the band’s own E Works Records, EELS have today shared the album’s opening track, ‘Amateur Hour’.

‘Amateur Hour’ follows on from recently released singles ‘The Magic,’ ‘Steam Engine‘ and ‘Good Night on Earth‘, which The New York Times heralded as “a quintessential Eels song: hoarse, succinct, dry-eyed and well aware of life’s ironies,” and received rotation adds across Double J, 2SER, Edge Radio and rage (Feature Video), while early previews of the album have seen Extreme Witchcraft described as “honest to god rock n’ roll” by DIY Magazine, “wit, tunes and third-degree self awareness” by Uncut, and “E delivers again on his percussive, groove-rich latest” by MOJO.

EELS leader Mark Oliver Everett, aka E, co-produced the record with PJ Harvey producer and guitarist John Parish, marking the first time the two have recorded together since 2001’s Souljacker album.

Says E: “John Parish is one of the most even-tempered, polite people I’ve ever met. A true gentleman. Actually he’s probably THE most polite person I’ve ever met. But when he gets into the studio he becomes a mad scientist. If you make music with John Parish, you get stuff no one else does. He has a really unique toolbox and musical outlook. Perhaps his politeness is a coping mechanism to keep Mr. Hyde under control when he’s out of his laboratory.”

EELS have had one of the most consistently acclaimed careers in music. The ever-changing project of principal singer/songwriter E (Mark Oliver Everett), EELS have released 13 studio albums since their 1996 debut, Beautiful Freak. In 2008, E published his highly acclaimed book Things the Grandchildren Should Know and starred in the award-winning Parallel Worlds, Parallel Lives documentary about the search to understand his quantum physicist father, Hugh Everett III. 2020’s Earth To Dora album, received extensive critical praise, and was described as “their sweetest natured album ever” by The Independent and awarded four stars in MOJO and NME.

Bae Baracus

by the partae January 6, 2022
written by the partae

Where are you currently?

Clef – Gibsons, BC, Canada, planet Earth

Dolly – Vancouver, B.C.

Lin – Sunshine Coast, BC

How did you first start playing music?

Clef – I’ve been playing for so long that I don’t remember! But I’ve always been involved in something, whether it’s high school jazz band, composing an indie film score, a neo-soul vibe project, an extemporal spectacle band, or Bae Baracus!

Dolly – Learning to play the tin whistle in school…

Lin – Playing recorder, violin and piano as a kid

What’s been happening recently?

Clef – Mostly baby-raising, tryna live in the moment.

Dolly – A long break in Dublin, Ireland, where I’m from. Been surrounded by lots of trad music, maybe that will come out in future writing.

Lin – Not much right now, just coming out the other side of the holiday break, with the kids home from school (more local Covid measures) against the same intense backdrop that ended 2021…<grimace>

You’ll be releasing a remix and video of your single ‘Flex’ on Jan 14, what originally influenced the sound and songwriting for Flex?

Dolly – Being disconnected from people during the pandemic (and before, to be honest). Frustration at trying to communicate online and how it takes away the human element. People communicate much differently when they have to look into each other’s eyes, rather than from behind a screen. That sincere message is delivered in a slight tongue in cheek wrapper, as you can see from the video.

Clef – I think it was a tongue-in-cheek approach but I’ve learned that nothing serious comes out of taking yourself too seriously.

Lin – We wrote & recorded our album in a weekend last summer, and wanted some songs with an element of fun & danceability, in anticipation of live shows and people needing to let off steam. A couple of the songs had a nod to old piano-house and the basis for Flex also has a retro vibe. For some reason, it made me think of the 90s Berlin scene (no idea why as I’d never even been there) but Dolly had lived in Germany and we decided to try a ‘persona’ to deliver the message, which we thought worked really well for the track.

Why did you decide to remix Flex?

Dolly –  It’s the clubbiest song we’ve done so far, it cries out for remixing.

Lin – Yeah, this is one of our faster songs at 125bpm and I wanted to do a moody half-time kind of approach as a b-side

How did you approach the remix process?

Dolly – For my part, I added more primal vocal sounds and swirls to add another layer

Clef – Shout out to Lin for remix! I just blipped and blooped on the remix ?

Lin – Like all our tracks, this came together super fast and I threw it down in a couple of hours. Dolly sent some additional vocal parts and Clef sent some of his inimitable OP1 work… Our approach as a band is to not overthink things nor obsess over details, which I think is one reason why we have so much fun creating together.

What influenced the video concept?

Dolly – We agreed that if we were going to sing about flexing, the video needed to be fun and funny, kitsch and campy. Like “Physical” by Olivia Newton John.

Clef – I think that the concept for the video was pretty much there from the jump, what remained to be seen was how we’d pull off a concept as ambitious as that, and I gotta say, I am amazed by the outcome, I think this video is hilarious!

Lin – this has been a tough couple of years for everyone, and we just wanted to lighten things up a bit and keep things fun. Also, knowing that we were going to release in January, where traditionally people think about working out, it felt like this was the right route. The original concept had a whole cast of extras and a massive nightclub scene, but ya know, lack of budget, time and a pandemic scuppered that 🙂

Where and when did you film and who did you work with?

Dolly – We filmed at Gibson’s CrossFit gym on the sunshine coast (big thanks!) in November, with the wonderful Tallulah directing/filming/lighting. A one woman marvel!

Lin – Massive thanks to Gibsons CrossFit for letting us have freedom to play in their amazing gym! And also to Tallulah for shooting and directing us. I edited the video and the team at LyricVids.Com in Toronto did some colour correction and VFX to give it added sparkle.

What did you find most rewarding and challenging whilst creating the video?

Clef – From my end the process was really easy and I was just excited to be there, but it felt like a good time all around and energy at the set was super positive and exciting. The difficulty for me was getting there in the cold, straight from a bartending shift.

Dolly – Rewarding: getting to perform and be silly in a CrossFit gym with a great group of people! Challenging: finding a time we were all available..

Lin – I’m not a video editor, but I’ve cut most of our videos out of necessity, so that presents some challenges but that said I’m really happy with how this turned out. The most rewarding thing was having 3 hours in this amazing gym, going in with not much of a plan, but just having the freedom to play! I’ve kept myself pretty isolated through the pandemic so it was amazing hanging with Dolly, Clef and Tallulah and letting loose a bit 🙂

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Dolly – Róisín Murphy and Fontaines D.C.

Clef – My buddy got me on the latest Yves Tumor LP from 2020 and WHOAMEMY

Lin – I’m loving Shad’s latest album ‘Tao’ and Little Simz ‘S.I.M.B.I.’

What do you like to do away from music?

Clef – Music is like religion for me so it’s hard to say I could do anything “away” from music but there are other things I’d like to do around music, especially in the technology domain. I’m very interested in how tech-driven solutions could give more control to artists in the production and distribution of their work and how to implement my IT knowledge into a musical space.

Dolly – Riding my motorcycle and my bicycle.

Lin – Growing vegetables without the use of chemicals.

What’s planned for 2022?

Dolly – Live performances, hopefully!

Clef – It’s gonna be a crazy year, a lot of things need to work out to make it tenable or else I’m gonna have to get off this planet!
Lin – Really hoping for us to play some live shows and to bring the fun vibe of Bae to some clubs and festivals later this year.

Favourite food and place to hangout?
Dolly – Fish n chips or sushi. Up in the mountains or in a dive bar.

Lin – Pizza or Curry… I love being in the woods of British Columbia. Pizza or curry in the woods would be a magical thing, in fact that’s a pretty achievable goal for 2022.

Where are you currently based?

I am currently based in Etobicoke, ON (just outside of Toronto), but Hamilton, ON is my hometown.

How did you start playing music?

I got started playing music in my hometown at Hamilton’s yearly music awards. Each year they held a Rising Star competition for up and coming artists to enter, and when I was about 15 I decided to give it a go with a song I had written. Having grown up playing piano, I always enjoyed being musical, but had never performed for the public out of fear.

That year I ended up placing third, and I don’t know what it was about that moment, but I decided right then and there that I wanted to pursue music as a career. A music degree and a bunch of milestones later, I’d say it’s going pretty good so far!

What’s been happening recently?

Recently I’ve been doing a lot of writing! The whole “pandemic” thing has really dwindled down the opportunity to perform live, so I’ve been trying to use the time to figure out what I want to say musically and work out a new show and material for 2022!

Your new single ‘Dial Tone’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

The idea behind “Dial Tone” actually came from an episode of Letter Kenny. It’s slang for “a dull, boring person”: ie) John has all the personality of a dial tone. When I heard it used in that show I always thought that would make a good song title. Fast forward a few years and a couple boring conversations I couldn’t escape from; “Dial Tone” was born!

How did you go about writing ‘Dial Tone’?

When I decided to finally write it, I reached out to my friends Jesse Slack and Daryl Scott to co-write it with me because I knew the way they wrote would be a good fit for the tune. We really wanted to go for something lazy feeling but also sassy and luckily this was one of those songs that just seemed to come together really easily.

Where and when did you record/produce/master the single and who with?

“Dial Tone” was actually recorded this July! I was so excited about the song after we wrote it in March that I wanted to get it out right away. So I reached out to my producer Jeff Dalziel (who also mastered it) and we got cracking! Everything was recorded at his house, other than parts from the players that didn’t live locally who just recorded at their own houses. It’s crazy how much you don’t need a studio anymore to get the job done.

How did you approach the recording process?

This recording process was approached in what I would call a very typical modern country way. I sent Jeff a demo of the song with the idea and vision I had for it and he worked his magic! By the time I came to record my vocal, the track was basically completely put together. Atypical to that, is me getting to play the acoustic line in the song and add some creative input, which I really enjoyed getting to do on this track.

What’s the weirdest gig you’ve ever played and why?

OH MAN, just one? Lol. I’ve played in a few dive bars where I’ve gotten to see some pretty interesting things but I think the weirdest gig I ever played was the first gig I ever did with my band.

Right when I was first starting out, my college roommate, who I admittedly didn’t know very well, had her relatives in our dorm one time and they asked me if I wanted to play a private party they were throwing. I told them I’d love to, but my band didn’t yet have enough material to fill an evening. We knew 6 songs, to be exact. However, they said that that would be enough and hired me for the evening.

A few weeks later, my country band and I showed up to their event and proceeded to play 3, 2-song sets, where in between they had a classical pianist perform. It ended up being a really fun night but it was definitely the weirdest event I’ve ever performed.

How do you prepare for shows?

To be honest, I don’t really have a ritual that I do! Performing has become pretty second nature to me now (trust me, it never used to be) and usually I just show up and do my thing. I am lucky enough to have a band that I’ve been playing with for years, so that really takes away any worry that I might get before stepping on the stage.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

I am ALWAYS listening to Kacey Musgraves. I am pretty sure she will be my favourite artist until the day I die. But aside from her new album, I’ve been really digging what Ingrid Andress is saying, as well as Tennille Townes.

What do you like to do away from music?

I really like being creative, so in my time off I find myself doing things like scrapbooking, photography, web design, interior design, etc. Pretty much anything with the word “design” after it lol. I’m also a huge environmentalist, so I’ll spend a lot of time trying to make my lifestyle a bit more waste free, or educating myself on ways an individual can create a positive impact on sustaining this big ol’ body of water we call earth.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2021 going into 2022?

Most of 2021 will be about getting “Dial Tone” to as many ears as possible, but I will say that I’ve also got a little EP in the works that I’m hoping to get out to the world sometime in 2022.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

Ouuuu. A few different answers. My favourite place to “get” food is Valiant’s in Barrie, ON. My favourite food in general is pizza, and my favourite place to hangout I’d have to say, is my local watering hole TJ Osheas Irish Snug in Etobicoke, ON.

FANCYNORMAL Release Pop-Bop Pavlova piece ‘FIASCO’

by the partae September 30, 2021
written by the partae

A BIT OF A FIASCO: FANCYNORMAL to release Pop-Bop Pavlova piece, FIASCO

Miscommunication, misinterpretation & misunderstanding, well, we’ve all been there, and Melbourne duo FancyNormal have summed it all up in their latest pop-spritzer bop: FIASCO.

It’s a messy and chaotic ode to miscommunication & trying to understand your significant other. Like being a contestant in a rigged gameshow, where ‘every door you choose you lose’, FancyNormal raises a pinot noir to those who are just tired of guessing what the other is thinking in a relationship that lacks verbalisation.

The duo have had a momentous first year previously releasing their debut EP ‘Starters & Appetizers’ and an engaging remix EP release with Skio Music for their single, Ultra Passion. FIASCO is the cherry on top of what has been an incredible year of releases for Fancy.

Speaking about the single, the band says “it’s not an anti-lovesong per se, but more of an anti-rose-coloured-glasses view of what a real relationship looks like.” Guaranteed dance-a-bility, the track will make you feel heard and maybe even say omfg.

Feel like you’re just spinning a wheel, hoping you’ll open the correct suitcase sometimes? This is the song for you – a power-bop ballad filled with plenty to get grooving to. FIASCO will be released on all platforms this September 30.

COURTNEY BARNETT Shares new single & video ‘Write A List Of Things To Look Forward To’ New album Things Take Time, Take Time out November 12

by the partae September 30, 2021
written by the partae
Credit: Mia Mala McDonald

One of the shimmering highlights of her upcoming album Things Take Time, Take Time, Courtney Barnett’s new single ‘Write A List of Things to Look Forward To’ is gorgeous and poignant; a joyful and melodic love letter to friends and friendship.

‘Write A List of Things to Look Forward To’ takes its name from the technique one of Barnett’s friends advocated for her to get her out of a depressive funk, and paints a bittersweet picture of small wins and the circle of life. “Nobody knows why we keep trying”, she sings, “And so on it goes, I’m looking forward to the next letter that I’m gonna get from you”. It strikes the exact chord between wistfulness and acceptance and points to a deeper level of complexity in Barnett’s songwriting. “I found a deeper communication with people in my life – deeper conversations”, Barnett notes of this new phase. “And a new level of gratitude for friendships that had been there for so long that I had maybe taken for granted”.

The latest track also arrives with a wholesome and heart-warming video by Christina Xing, featuring Barnett as the sender and recipient of a series of gifts and letters. You can view that below.

SYDNEY DUO DEKLEYN RETURN WITH THE SUMMER-TINGED POP STYLINGS OF ‘OVER AGAIN’

by the partae September 30, 2021
written by the partae

“Blending both organic and electronic instrumentation with absolute ease, as well as those infectiously catchy lyrics and melodies floating about, it’s clear to us that dekleyn have well and truly found their groove.” – Acid Stag

“…Nostalgic without being morose, blending melancholy and hopefulness.”- EARMILK

“Just another reason to get excited about you two. y’all are producing such a ridiculous amount of songs and never skip on quality.” – Abby Butler, triple j

BUY/STREAM: DEKLEYN – OVER AGAIN

Returning with their first solo single of 2021, and following the release of their 2020 self-titled debut album, today Sydney duo Dekleyn serve up their infectious pop single ‘Over Again’. Steadily making a name for themselves since 2017, the talented duo have independently released three EPs, in addition to their debut album, and a series of standalone singles, together boasting over 7 million streams across platforms. Known for their smooth vocals with heavy-hitting choruses, combining electronic elements and synths with guitar leads and melodies, the pair have strived to broaden the horizons of conventional indie-pop.

Teaming up with Mark Zito (Fractures) on co-production duties, ‘Over Again’ delivers a truly international pop palette, with Justin Kleyn’s vocals taking centre stage, alongside refined guitar licks, and a driving beat that delivers an equally perfect soundtrack to a warm summer’s night, or cosy winter’s morning.

Taking the story of a love that wasn’t destined to be, Dekleyn create an uplifting take on the memories of a past relationship, sharing “’Over Again’ is a fun upbeat tune about the ups and downs of a relationship, the rekindling of an old fire, and the attempt to make it all work out. It’s about making the best of a bad situation and trying to be in the moment and take it all as it comes.”

Made up of Justin Kleyn and Matthew DeCelis, Dekleyn have seen a plethora of support from all corners of the globe, whilst amassing a solid fan base with their ever evolving indie pop soundscape. Already championed by both triple j and Unearthed, as well as tastemakers such as EARMILK, Acid Stag, Beautiful Buzzz, Atwood Magazine, Going Solo, and more, the duo are continuing to impress with their effervescent productions and take on songwriting. Whilst recently signing with Raida Artists for bookings, Dekleyn have been prolific in their touring, with support slots for the likes of Confidence Man, Fergus James, Fractures, CLYPSO and Angus Dawson, whilst selling out their ‘Thrive’ EP launch show in Sydney.

Dekleyn’s new single ‘Over Again’ is out now.

MOLLY PAYTON SHARES LATEST SINGLE ‘JANUARY SUMMERS’ NEW MINI-ALBUM SLACK OUT THIS FRIDAY, OCTOBER 1 VIA THE ORCHARD

“Modern rock anthems…’Porcupine’ is a breakthrough moment”

“Her songs are rich, accomplished and instantly relatable”

Molly Payton releases ‘January Summers’, the latest offering from her forthcoming mini-album Slack, out Friday October 1 via The Orchard. LISTEN TO ‘JANUARY SUMMERS’ HERE.

The London-based 20-year-old has recently returned from a long stint in her homeland of Aotearoa / New Zealand, where she created Slack remotely with her frequent collaborator Oli Barton-Wood (Nilüfer Yanya, Porridge Radio, Sorry), as well as Grammy-award winning producer Jimmy Hogarth (Amy Winehouse) and British songwriter Benjamin Francis Leftwich. She is set to play upcoming festivals including Liverpool Sound City, Pitchfork Music Festival Paris and Amsterdam’s London Calling, as well as joining Oscar Lang on his October UK tour.

Of the new single, Molly comments: “I wrote January Summers near the end of last year when I was missing New Zealand and all of the people I’d been close with before I moved to the UK. I was initially just wanting to write this joyous ode to being 15/16 and doing everything for the first time. Going to your first party, the first time you hear your favourite song, the first time you tell someone you like them and so on. Even musically I pulled influence from bands that my big brother used to play when he was driving me places at that age, like the really messy surf-rock guitars and simple happy melodies. But it ended up also being about how complicated everything becomes the older you get – How I miss the joy and anticipation that came with the lack of direction I had when I was younger”.

‘January Summers‘ follows earlier singles set to appear on the coming mini-album, including ‘Honey’ (recently BBC Radio 1 Introducing’s track of the week), ‘You Cut Me So Much Slack’, and ‘When Skies Were Always Blue’. Slack follows Molly’s breakout EP Porcupine, released last Autumn to wide critical acclaim, including Pigeons & Planes, Dork, The Line of Best Fit, Steve Lamacq at 6Music and Jack Saunders at BBC Radio 1. It also caught the ears of fellow artists, including Arlo Parks, who chose Molly to appear alongside her takeover of Spotify’s ‘Our Generation’ playlist, commenting of Molly’s music “there was just this sense of rawness and earnestness that really reminded me of things that I’ve lived myself”.

Slack was largely completed during Molly’s return to her homeland of Aotearoa / New Zealand, which she left at age 16 to move to the UK. Originally intended to be a short stay, her visit there was extended to an eight-month stay as UK lockdowns prevailed. As well as spending time with the friends and places she left as a teenager, it also fuelled her resolution to reconnect with the memories and tribulations of her past, and process them through her songwriting. Revolving around  the adage of looking back in order to move forward, she describes her coming output as “honest, reflective and hopeful.” Her time back home also allowed her to rediscover the catharsis of playing live, with Molly performing a series of full-capacity headline gigs against the backdrop of Aotearoa / New Zealand’s low Covid rates and eased restrictions.

‘January Summers’ is out now, buy/stream it here.

Dyno

by the partae September 29, 2021
written by the partae

Dyno is a techno DJ and producer based in Italy whose been releasing music since the ‘90s, and worked with labels ranging from UMEK’s 1605 to Coyu’s Suara. He also runs a label called Dyrwalk and via the imprint recently put out a new deep, dark and hypnotic release called Selva Oscura, which featured two of his own tracks. Excited to learn more about him, we invited Dyno to run through a few questions…

Hi Dyno, it’s great to be talking with you today. Where are you currently based?

Hi everyone, nice to meet you. I’m based in Pesaro, Italy, which is a small city between the sea and hills. In the beginning of my career, I moved my studio around between basements, garages and other buildings, but now I’ve a permanent set up in the hills near my home.

Could you describe your sound and style of music?

I’m very attached to analogue and old school sounds, but also blend in new digital sounds.

Mainly I produce techno, but my style is not always focused on just one style, especially when I’m experimenting with my analogue synths. Usually, my tracks are quite dark with a lot of energy, but I’m open minded, and make what feels right in the moment.

How did you first discover electronic music, and who are some of your main influences?

When I was a child, I loved listening to radio stations using my headphones. I was always excited by electronic sounds, which I later discovered were made using synthesisers. Around this time, my favourite song was “Stripped” by Depeche Mode. Even today, I still get goose bumps when listening to it, especially at two and half minutes, where it’s so good that I completely lose my mind. I also got influenced by other tracks such as “Radio Ga Ga” by Queen, “Save A Prayer” by Duran Duran, “21st Century Boy” by Sigue Sigue Sputnik, and lots more…

One day in a local music shop, I asked for them to recommend me some CDs of good electronic music. It was this point when I first heard “Phaedra” by Tangerine Dream, and from then I had no doubt that electronic music would be my future passion.

I understand that you recently dropped a new EP called Selva Oscura, could you tell us about the tracks and concept?

Selva Oscura consists of two deep and dark tracks with solid reverberation, searching for a deep and detailed sensation to impress the listener. This production was born from reminiscing about my passion for vinyl, and thinking about the illegal raves I DJ’ed at in the ‘90s.

What’s your studio setup like, and what are your favourite bits of equipment?

I’m now stable in my new studio located the middle of the hills, and I’m so happy that hopefully I won’t have to move it again.  I design it meticulously, taking into account all the acoustic details plus shape of the room. It’s a pentagonal room with a 32 channel analogue mixer, three different sets of studio monitors, Audioscope Spectrum analyser and several original analogue synthesisers from Roland, Korg, Moog, Yamaha and others. I also use multiple effect pedals plus some other outboard gear, and I like using my analogue sequencer and modular synths. To complete the setup, behind my studio seat is a wall with thousands of vinyl records.

Can you tell us about your label Dyrwalk, as I’d live to know when you set it up, and which artists you have worked with?

Dyrwalk was a project started in 2010 with the aim of mainly releasing my own tracks. The label is a place where I could release music that I wanted to release without having to make tweaks or changes requested by other people, and have the freedom to experiment with new sounds and ideas. I’ve also released with many other labels, and across all those imprints I’ve worked with UMEK, Oliver Koletzki, Max Cooper, Sisko Electrofanatik, Solee, T78, Alex Dolby, Meat Katie, John Fleming, Khainz, Alex di Stefano and many more…

What other labels have you worked with, and what’s the release you are most proud of?

I’ve worked with lots of labels in my career including 1605, Suara, Bush Records, Traum, Yoshitoshi, Global Underground, Gain Records, JOOF Recordings, Mondo Groove, Hell Yeah, Mantra Vibes, Incorrect and many others…

To be honest, I’m most proud of two publications that are not actually techno. I like to call them my two tripping albums, as they are both very atmospheric, and I dedicated a lot of time to working on them. I’ve listed them both below…

Dyno – Pic Nic Nello Spazio – Hell Yeah Recordings

Dyno – Synthònia – Mondo Groove

What do you like to do away from music?

I’m a passionate collector and player of vintage videogames, so whenever I’ve some free time, I start to play!

What’s planned for the remainder of 2021 going into 2022?

In a few weeks, I’ll be releasing an EP on Gain Records with four new tracks, then at the end of the year I’ll be putting out a collection of my favourite productions from 2021, which will also include two previously unpublished tracks. In 2022 I’ll start to work more on experimental electronic music, which I’ll do in parallel to my new techno releases.

For anyone visiting your hometown, can you recommend a good place for food and favourite place to hang out?

If you want to eat good, and genuine Italian food, then here are my suggestions for good restaurants in the hills near my home Osteria del Giogo, Il Pergolato dalla Maria and La Vacchia Cantina. Nearer the sea, you can also find several good fish restaurants. I also love going into the some of the small taverns in the historical centre of Pesaro. If you want to have get some scenic views of the landscape, then you should also visit port side of the town.

Thanks for chatting today, is there anything else you would like to add before we finish?

Thanks for the interview, greetings also to all The Partae readers, and of course to people that support my music. It was a pleasure. Thanks Again.

CRESCENDOLL DEDICATES HER NLV PRESENTS MIX TO ONE OF WARRANG’S MOST IMPORTANT CULTURAL SPACES

by the partae September 29, 2021
written by the partae

Throughout 2021, Nina Las Vegas’ curated events moniker NLV Presents has put together an ongoing, curated mix series that aims to highlight some Australia’s best and brightest underground DJ’s.

We’re now six months into the series, with a new mix released via Apple Music in the last week of each month. Last month, Wiradjuri woman Kritty took over, blasting a high-energy collection of tracks that reflect NLV Records’ ethos of repping underground club music.

In September, Gamiliraay woman and sistergirl Emma Bastable AKA crescendoll is setting the pace.

NLV PRESENTS: CRESCENDOLL – “TRIBUTE TO THE BLOCK (1973—2015)” [DJ MIX]

Visuals by Kris Andrew Small

Emma is a Trans and First Nations advocate and solicitor based in Warrang (Sydney). During the day, she works as a solicitor at a community legal centre. She works predominantly on cases centred around homelessness, discrimination law, and policing – particularly in relation to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

By night, she can be found both behind and in front of the decks at a range of electronic and queer club nights across the town.

As a DJ, Emma’s connection to music runs deep. She is interested in the idea of dance music as rebirth, and the power music holds in being able to construct and deconstruct some of life’s bigger themes, including death, creation, destruction and healing.

Her passion for representation remains central to everything she does, which is why her mix for NLV Presents is so important. “This is a mix recorded in Warrang during a period of really heavy news and lockdown,” Emma explains.

“I’ve also been doing a lot of thinking around the role of club music and dance in exploring and connecting with my identity, as a sistergirl and queer and trans woman, and the ways in which clubs and dancefloors serve as spaces in which we can think about and create new ways of being and existing, but which also are inherently political and can be problematic in terms of gentrification, lack of accessibility, and white, cis, able-bodied bodies being privileged.

“In this spirit, I wanted to dedicate this mix to The Block in Redfern and recognise the pivotal role it’s played in celebrations of First Nations culture, art and music, and the real trauma our community has experienced in its redevelopment and the ousting of activists, including the Aboriginal Tent Embassy.

“I invite the listener to remember that, pretty much wherever we are, we exist on stolen land, to recognise the role that bla(c)k people have played in the development of club music, and to celebrate the achievements of POC DJs, event organisers, and dancers. Hope you enjoy!”

Emma’s mix expertly blends sounds of resistance with a ferocity that can only be felt by something with such purpose. Tracks from Ariel Zetina, Merca Bae, Tygapaw, DJ SWISHA and Kush Jones sit neatly in this expertly tempered mix.

NLV Presents has continued to thrive due to Nina Las Vegas’ passion for bringing the sounds of the underground to our ears, with Kritty’s mix being another example of how much amazing talent is right at home.

Nina Las Vegas’ passion for bringing the sounds of the underground to life has remained central to the NLV Presents ethos. With a long and extremely fruitful presence in Australia’s underground, NLV Presents has historically brought some of Australia’s now heavy hitter’s to stages and clubs around the country, featuring Tkay Maidza, Cosmo’s Midnight, Swick, Wave Racer, Motez, Touch Sensitive, What So Not and more. On the overseas front, NLV Presents: International Edition’s saw the likes of Eclair Fifi, Sam Tiba, UNiiQU3, Djemba Djemba, Monki and MSSNGNO tour Australia for the first time.

OVERMONO Share new single ‘Bby’ Announce Diamond Cut / Bby 12″ Out Nov 19 via XL Recordings

by the partae September 29, 2021
written by the partae
Praise for Overmono

“They’ve signed to XL, collaborated with Joy Orbison, remixed Thom Yorke, appeared in GTA, and generally seem to be the UK techno group of the moment. Their fabric Presents mix, then, comes at an auspicious moment where they seem poised to approach chart-threatening, Bicep-style territory.” – Resident Advisor

“‘So U Kno,’ the Overmono track that opens the mix, is particularly excellent: an iron-clad 2-step battleship with an irresistible hook, the steel of techno colliding against the rubbery skitter of UKG.” – Pitchfork

“Brothers Tom & Ed Russell (also known as Truss and Tessela), two of the most prolific UK producers of this generation, who’ve written some of the most memorable techno tracks of the past half decade, add another exciting release to their already praiseworthy legacy. If you ever asked yourself how a peak time UK techno set would sound like after more than a year of absence from clubs, here lies the answer.” – The Quietus

“The UK’s current hot dance duo extract serious mileage out of an insistent, imperceptibly bending three-note motif, before some skull-massaging chords arrive to roll your eyes back.”
– The Guardian

Today, XL Recordings / Remote Control Records announce the release of Diamond Cut/Bby, the new 12” from London duo Overmono. Out mid-November, you can listen to ‘Bby’ HERE.

Over the course of the pandemic, Overmono have undoubtedly risen to become the most sought-after dance act of 2021. Shows at festivals like Greenman, We Out Here, Field Day and Gala were all hailed as highlights, as was their sold out, packed-out headline show at Village Underground earlier this month. Their track ‘So U Kno’ is the anthem of the summer and their ‘Fabric Presents Overmono’ compilation and mix is being hailed as one of the best the revered London institution has released.

Used as the closing track of their set at the Village Underground, ‘Bby’ is a natural follow on from this activity, a brooding, stripped back 2-step banger with an infectious vocal hook – perfect for autumn and winter raving.

Speaking on the release, the duo say: “For the past 4 years our studio has been in an old magazine printing building. after moving in we ripped up the carpets to expose this amazing wooden flooring and thought to ourselves – ‘why the fuck would anyone cover this up?’ – turns out ink from the old print presses that used to be there still comes up through the floor and makes these grimy swirling patterns that slowly shift over weeks and months.

Earlier this year we found out the building was being sold for re-development. We had two weeks to get out. Packing down the studio was left till the very last night and we spent the rest of the time making one last tune there. The chords in ‘Bby’ are those ink stains. Woozy and morphing, feeling like they might swallow you up.”
