written by the partae
As we edge closer to Summer good times, Falls is back with important updates for the 2022/23 event that will see Arctic Monkeys, Lil Nas X, Peggy Gou, CHVRCHES, Jamie xx and so many others hit stages across VIC, NSW and WA.
FALLS Downtown Melbourne
Sidney Myer Music Bowl & Surrounds, 29 – 31 Dec
2 STAGES – CLUB FALLS – RANCHO RELAXO – MULTI BARS – FOOD TRUCKS + MORE
Falls’ VIC event is set to relocate to Melbourne for the first time. Falls Downtown Melbourne will now take place at Sidney Myer Music Bowl and surrounds across the same dates 29, 30 and 31 December.

Colac Shire Otway Council approved the planning permit on 30 June for Falls VIC to be held at a new location at Birregurra, but while the planning permit was approved with council, along with support from the local MP and the broader community an application by a small group of locals was made to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) appealing this decision and a hearing date set for February/March 2023, after the event was meant to take place.

Falls Co-Producer Jessica Ducrou said: “Thanks so much for all the support from stakeholders, the venue, artists, all who contribute to Falls and especially our patrons. We’re thrilled that the show will go on at Sidney Myer Music Bowl, ringing in the new year in Downtown Melbourne!”

Falls Downtown Melbourne will feature the full line-up of acts already announced, across two stages in an inner city setting, with all the convenience that provides plus Club Falls, Rancho Relaxo, multiple bars and food trucks and much more! Bring in the 2023 New Year with your crew, as we rediscover the joy of celebrating this milestone together.

Ticket holders who are not able to attend the new venue in Melbourne will be able to apply for a refund from 12pm AEST today until 5pm AEDT Thursday 13 October. All Camping tickets will be automatically refunded from Thursday 29 September 2022. Moshtix will be in touch with all account holders directly with more information, including how to exchange your Birregurra tickets to the Byron event if you would like the full camping festival experience. Please note that refunds or exchanges need to be requested by the purchaser i.e. if a mate purchased your ticket for you, they will also need to request your refund for you.

Tickets for Falls Downtown Melbourne are on sale 9am AEST Wednesday 14 September from Moshtix.

FALLS Byron, North Byron Parklands, 31 Dec – 2 Jan.
Prefer the full immersion camping festival experience? Then Falls Byron is the place for you, with a range of camping options available. Bring your own kit and camp with or without your van or car. If hammering pegs isn’t really your thing, you can Rent a Tent, or treat yourself at Flash Camp, an exclusive glamping village that offers friendly concierge services, luxe bathroom facilities and most importantly a warm and comfy bed.

Plus, there’s morning yoga and pilates, swimming pools, field games, creative space, Shit Olympics and of course that incredible lineup of artists to keep you tuned in!

An extensive program of works is currently underway to prepare North Byron Parklands for Falls Byron in 4 months’ time. An estimated $1M+ will be spent on restoration, additional drainage, ground and roadworks to upgrade the venue for the summer event. Check the North Byron Parklands website for details and updates. Significant upgrades will also be made to venue entry points to allow for a smoother and faster ingress for Falls campers.

FALLS Downtown Fremantle, Fremantle Park, 7 – 8 Jan.
As previously announced, Falls Downtown Fremantle has moved homes to Fremantle Park and Fremantle Arts Centre, a beautiful location as we expand the WA leg of the festival and everything the west has to offer.

Falls Downtown Fremantle’s new home gives you the opportunity to supercharge your Falls outing with one of the new VIP experiences. Roll like a rockstar at Club Falls or really dial it up in a Falls Cabana.

$1 added to each Falls 2022/23 event ticket sold will fund the FEAT. LIVE Solar Slice, a sustainable touring initiative supplying clean power to festival sites and venues, reducing emissions, and buying quality offsets to minimise the impact of live events. FEAT. Live founder Heidi Lenffer said “This moment demands decisive climate leadership from the culture-makers in live music, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to partner with such an iconic institution as Falls to spearhead a courageous emissions reduction plan together.”

Falls acknowledges and pays respect to the past, present and future Traditional Custodians and Elders of this nation and the lands where our festivals are held. Always was, always will be.

Surprise Chef share new single ‘Iconoclasts’

by the partae September 13, 2022
written by the partae

PRAISE FOR SURPRISE CHEF

[On Daylight Savings]…”It’s a warm hug of a record that perfectly encapsulates the unshakeable Melbourne spirit. As the days grow warmer and the evenings get lighter, Surprise Chef are bringing uplifting jazz-funk optimism to a city in need of some love and healing”
NME

“Cooling, jasmine-scented, time-warped instrumentals”
MOJO

“…known for their superbly blissed out jams, matching Curtis Mayfield melodics against Madlib style beats.”
CLASH

“[Money Music] is a bassline-driven mid-tempo tune that catches you from the first note and carries you through all the gorgeous changes.”
Beat Magazine

Naarm/Melbourne instrumental soul and funk five-piece Surprise Chef have shared new single ‘Iconoclasts‘, taken from their forthcoming new album Education & Recreation, out October 14 on Big Crown Records, marking their debut for the lauded Brooklyn-based label.

Following previous singles ‘Money Music‘ and ‘Suburban Breeze‘, ‘Iconoclasts’ is the embodiment of “cinematic soul”. Moody and spacious instrumentation that at times is met with heavy drum beats that send the listener on a trip through their mind. Surprise Chef pull influence from the likes of David Axelrod to The Soulquarians, topping it off with their own distinct flavour.

Surprise Chef’s music is based on evoking mood; their vivid arrangements utilize time and space to build soundscapes that invite the listener into their world. The quintet’s distinct sound pulls from 70s film scores, the funkier side of jazz, and the samples that form the foundation of hip hop. They push the boundaries of instrumental soul and funk with their own approach honed by countless hours in the studio, studying the masters, and perhaps most importantly, the “tyranny of distance” that dictates a unique perspective to their music.

Hailing from just outside of Melbourne, Australia their first two albums, All News Is Good News and Daylight Savings amassed a die-hard fanbase and brought their sound from their home studio to every corner of the globe. The band is now signed to Big Crown Records, joining a lineage of contemporary and classic sounds that have influenced Surprise Chef’s music since their formation in 2017.

Surprise Chef is Lachlan Stuckey on guitar, Jethro Curtin on keys, Carl Lindeberg on bass, Andrew Congues on drums, and Hudson Whitlock—the latest member who does it all from percussion to composing to producing. Their self proclaimed “moody shades of instrumental jazz-funk” have a bit of everything: punchy drums, infectious keys, rhythm guitar you might hear on a Studio One record, and flute lines that could be from a Blue Note session. But when you step back and take in the entirety of their sound and approach, you’ll hear and see a group greater than the sum of its parts.

In many ways Surprise Chef embodies the idiom “the benefits of limits.” They were limited in that there weren’t many people making or talking about instrumental jazz/soul/funk in Southeast Australia, let alone putting out records. This left them to develop their sound and approach in a kind of creative isolation where a small circle of friends and like-minded musicians fed off each other. “Being in Australia, being so far away, we only get glimpses and glances of this music’s origins,” Stuckey says. “But hearing a label like Big Crown was one of the first times we realized you could make fresh, new soul music that wasn’t super retro or just nostalgic.”

This approach is on full display throughout their new album Education & Recreation. Tracks like ‘Velodrome‘ pair chunky drums with an ear-worm synth line that has all the making of something you would find on an Ultimate Breaks & Beats compilation while numbers like ‘Iconoclasts’ show their knack for tasteful use of space. From the crushing intro of ‘Suburban Breeze’ to the floaty mellow bop of ‘Spring’s Theme‘ Surprise Chef has weaved together an album that takes you through peaks and valleys of emotion and provides a vivid soundtrack that will pull you deeper into your imagination. There is a beauty in the vast space for interpretation of instrumental music and they are adding a modern classic to the canon with this new album. Turn on the record and enjoy the ride, wherever it may take you.

written by the partae

Ska Nation 2022 will bring some of the best ska-centric acts to the small regional town called Warrion, just outside Colac, Victoria.

This year’s festival will be headed up by some of Australia’s and the world’s best exponents of Jamaican-inspired music together for a two-day dance party – including one of the originators of ska from Jamaica in Stranger Cole.

Joining Cole will be Los Angeles’ purveyors of the ‘dirty reggae’ sound The Aggrolites, who will also be heading up the festivities, alongside American third-wave ska band Mephiskapheles, Philly ska experts Catbite, Victorian seven headed brash and boisterous ska punk monster The Resignators, and Australians tallest Ska band The Donald Trumpets, among others.

Making its highly-anticipated return for 2022, following last years event with the likes of The Bennies, The Resignators, Loin Groin and more, the massive two-day Ska Nation 2022 celebrates the vibrant ska scene in all its glory.

Taking place on Saturday, November 26 and Sunday, November 27, Ska Nation 2022 is taking to the town of Warrion, two hours out of Melbourne. Just 20 minutes out of Colac, the festival will be nestled between dormant volcanoes and golden plains farms on an acre of the countryside behind the 150-year-old Ti Tree Hotel.

There will be free camping at Meredith Park campgrounds for festival-goers, with regular shuttles as well as camping closer to the venue (subject to council approval) and a variety of B&Bs and hotels in Colac and the surrounding district.

Ska Nation will also be complemented by markets and food trucks.

Surf Shop Cops (Perth) drop killer ‘Constant State’ Album

by the partae September 9, 2022
written by the partae

Surf Shop Cops release killer debut album ‘Constant State’

https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/surfshopcops/constant-state

Surf Shop Cops debut album, ‘Constant State’ follows a coming-of-age narrative. Songwriter Michael Slitenbachs reflects on the hard truths of growing up, and the things he doesn’t like about his younger self, to come out the other end of the ten tracks a better adjusted, more optimistic, and a much happier person.

The influence of bands like Amyl and the Sniffers, WAAX, and even Midnight Oil are all present, but it’s the unbridled intensity of the performance, the outpouring of emotion in the lyrics, and the enormous production that demands attention.

Musically, you can hear a mix of early 2000’s style emo, and indie rock, which carry the relatable lyrics with bounce, swagger, and sing-along hooks in spades. Surf Shop Cops debut record is worth your time.

Joan & The Giants Are Rebelling Against Routine With Their New Single ‘The Weekend’ Ahead Of Debut EP

“Another impressive one for 2021 from Joan & The Giants. They’ve zeroed in on an emotional centre point like a professional dart player throwing bullseyes at your heart.”
4 / 5 (Dave Ruby Howe, Triple J) [About ‘Just For You’]

Stream ‘The Weekend’

Alt-pop indie darlings Joan & The Giants are back with a tune that will make you want to live your Tuesdays with as much enthusiasm as your Saturdays – get ready for ‘The Weekend’, out on September 2 ahead of their debut EP ‘Me & You’ coming out on September 23 via Tomboi Records.

Joan & The Giants have been standing tall since forming in 2019. The talented Boorloo/Perth-based group centres around musical and romantic partners Grace Newton-Wordsworth and Aaron Birch, sharing their beautiful craft together with bandmembers Riley Sutton and Liam Olsen.

Garnering attention from tastemakers around the country, the band have released two singles so far this year, ‘Slow Motion’ and most recently ‘Home Song’. Now, their new single ‘The Weekend’ is the third release from their highly anticipated debut EP ‘Me & You’ (out on September 23), and like its folk-informed alt-pop predecessors, it’s one that’s set to soar.

A rebellion against modern grind culture and the mentality of ‘living for the weekend’, this track reflects the band’s changed philosophy to live every day with the same enthusiasm: live like you’re 17, fall in love but never fall in line, and spend time with someone whenever it feels right – because why should we only reserve our joy for days that the capitalist calendar dictates? With a melody that seeps in and sticks, earnest drums and cherry-sweet vocals, this is a tune dripping in emotive lyricism and honeyed rhythms, guaranteed to charm ears and dazzle hearts everywhere it’s heard.

During the pandemic’s beginning, Gracie found a sense of freedom from routine and tapped into this liberating feeling for ‘The Weekend’. She explains:

“There was an excitement and a lack of responsibility that was so refreshing and turbulent. I think when we started getting back to reality and going to work and grinding to push a music career again, that pressure and ‘baggage’ came back onto my shoulders, and I really didn’t want to live purely for ‘the weekend’ or wait for a Friday night to feel some kind of relief.”

Joan & The Giants’ most recent release ‘Home Song’ premiered via Triple J (Home & Hosed) and was added to Triple J Unearthed rotation. The song was also played on KCRW (US) and spent three weeks in AMRAP Metro Charts. The band has also seen support from Tone Deaf, Music Feeds, Scenestr, AU Review, AAA Backstage, Aus Music Scene as well as a bunch of community radio stations.

The band will be celebrating the launch of their debut EP at the Rosemount Hotel on Friday the 30th of September with special guests; more information below. In the meantime, get into the spirit of ‘The Weekend’ with Joan & The Giants from Friday, September 2.

‘Me & You’ Debut EP Launch

BLUESFEST 2023 – FIRST ARTIST ANNOUNCEMENT – OVER 40 ARTISTS WITH MORE TO COME

by the partae September 2, 2022
written by the partae

BLUESFEST 2023 – FIRST ARTIST ANNOUNCEMENT
 – OVER 40 ARTISTS WITH MORE TO COME

TICKET PRICE REMAINS SAME AS 2022!

In just 31 weeks the 34th Annual Bluesfest’s gates will open for what promises to be the most exciting Bluesfest ever.

Some of the finest contemporary and legendary Blues, Roots, Soul, Rock, Hip Hop, R&B, World and Americana music artists (and more) are confirmed to appear for the first original style Bluesfest since the world’s borders re-opened.

After a hugely successful 2022, that featured the best of predominantly Australian and NZ artists, it’s time to mix it up again. For the first time since 2019, Bluesfest is free and unencumbered to showcase the finest genres of music from all over the globe.

This is an incredible opening line up – over 40 artists alone in this first announcement – with more to come.

And more good news is that ticket prices, camping and VIP tickets remain the same as 2022’s prices. That’s despite the significant increase in cost of international flights and freight logistics, with artists fees also on the rise. Bluesfest will also invest in upgrading the VIP area to raise the VIP experience to new heights.

For the campers that seek a ‘class above’ experience you can upgrade to the Rainbow Tipi accommodation this year [with a modest increase in price] as well as experience further improvements with the onsite rental tents.

The 365 days a year site improvement on the Bluesfest property continue… “Since last year we’ve invested over $500k upgrading and waterproofing the Bluesfest site. Both myself and my team are currently looking at every single aspect of the Bluesfest experience to ensure it’s of the highest quality possible” said Peter Noble OAM.

Today, Bluesfest release 5-day tickets, and VIP tickets at the same 2022 price points. On site camping options also go on sale today at the same prices as 2022 for those who pitch their tents and vans.

In the coming weeks Bluesfest will release more of the line-up, along with the artist play dates so that both day-trippers and 3-day ticket holders can make an informed choice.

Tickets are available now through Moshtix www.bluesfest.com.au/tickets

Stand by for further announcements on two special satellite events happening in Melbourne and Perth, as well as side shows from some of this amazing line up.

A word from Festival Director Peter Noble OAM:

“For the first time since 2019, Bluesfest is presenting a fully international festival experience like the legendary ones we did before the COVID-era.

Whilst there are still plenty of Aussie artists listed in this first and upcoming announcements it is wonderful to once again in 2023, after four long years be able to bring back some of the greatest Blues, Roots, Soul, Rock, Hip Hop, R&B, World and Americana artists (and so much more) back to our shores after so long. As well as, of course, the stars of tomorrow.

We have our largest number of artists ever listed in our first Bluesfest artist announcement… check it out, there’s more than 40 of them. It is such a stunning list for every Bluesfester.

More good news is we’ve made the call to NOT increase our ticket prices. As always there’s a large allocation of tickets so everyone can experience the whole musical enchilada we are proud to be bringing to our shores.

A five-day season ticket at Bluesfest can be a life changing experience, and I promise you I will do my utmost best to present the greatest gathering of artists I can for our 34th Annual Bluesfest at Byron Events Farm over the Easter Long Weekend from April 6 – 10 next year.

For those of you who’d prefer to ‘day trip’ or purchase a 3 day ‘long weekend’ ticket, we are currently working on scheduling the artists’ play dates, and we will be releasing these, as well as the 1 & 3-day tickets soon. Watch this space! It may just be a few short weeks away…

To all Bluesfest fans, artists, suppliers, contractors, volunteers and to my dedicated team – thank you so much for your belief and your support. Together we’ve endured a few hard years. It’s time to get excited… time to come out and play, and to enjoy an experience like no other”

Ross & Rocky Lynch returning to Australia next month with Driver Era

by the partae September 1, 2022
written by the partae

The Driver Era have set their sights on Hollywood and chart domination” – NME

The Driver Era remain firmly heading in the right direction”- DORK

Stream ‘Malibu’ here

ALT-pop band THE DRIVER ERA release their brand-new single ‘Malibu’. Stream ‘Malibu’ here.

Laced in escapism, brothers Rocky and Ross Lynch wrote the song while daydreaming about personal experiences. “‘Malibu’ is about reminiscing on experiences in the best locations,” the band says. “It’s about getting away. It’s the spontaneous trip you take with someone – maybe you knew them before, or maybe you’re meeting them for the first time”.

‘Malibu’ follows on the band’s recent single, the dance-inspired ‘Keep Moving Forward’ feat. Nikka Costa – premiered by Rolling Stone, who praised the band for “holding onto some real ‘eclectic’ music” – the funky cut and ‘Malibu’ will be featured on the band’s upcoming ‘Summer Mixtape’ due for release this September.

The Driver Era have also released the “Malibu” official music video, shot and edited by director Tate Warner. The video follows Ross and Rocky on the California coast reminiscing about summer love. ‘Malibu’ is about reminiscing on experiences in the best locations,” the band stated. “It’s about getting away. It’s the spontaneous trip you take with someone — maybe you knew them before, or maybe you’re meeting them for the first time.“

The upcoming project is the follow up to the band’s second album ‘GIRLFRIEND’, it’s lead single ‘Heaven Angel’ and follow-up tracks ‘#1 Fan’ and ‘Leave Me Feeling Confident’, the band has been supported by the likes of Notion who praised ‘GIRLFRIEND’ as “their most inspired – and sonically diverse – body of work yet”, while Clash defined their sound as “vast alt-rock sound, with an endearing soulful groove”, with DORK praising “their ability to meld different genres while retaining that distinctive pop feel”, calling the album “a textured, smart modern pop rock record”.

Known for what Clash called, “intimate, high energy live show”, the band will bring their WORLD TOUR to Australia and will play shows in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne presented by Live Nation.

Since making their debut with ‘Preacher Man’ four years ago, The Driver Era have rocked up an impressive 300 million streams and 29 million combined social media followers, went on  released one studio album, three EPs and a series of critically acclaimed singles. With the new single ‘Malibu’, and the heavily-anticipated mixtape, as well as their upcoming world tour – during which they will play shows in Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Europe and UK for the first time ever – The Driver Era are set for an exciting year ahead.

Tjaka Mix The Old With The New With ‘Break It Down’ Music Video

Support for ‘Break It Down’

First play on Triple J Blak Out

Added to Triple J Unearthed Radio

4ZZZ Top 20

#10 and #5 on AMRAP Metro Charts

“Tjaka won’t have you taking the main road and it’s an adventure on the bumpy back streets with them behind the wheel. The didge is so mad all the way through too as it rises and falls”
4 / 5 (Declan Byrne, Triple J)

“Having seen them live, I can say they’re even better in person.” (Tone Deaf)

“…a gorgeous blend of electronic and hip hop fusion with Aboriginal ancestral influence.”
(Purple Sneakers)

First Nations Meanjin/Brisbane-based trio Tjaka, dropped their single ‘Break It Down’, a groundbreaking blend of electronic/ hip-hop combined with their Aboriginal ancestral influence, just the other week on August 16.

After seeing an overwhelming amount of support from the likes of Triple J, Triple J Unearthed, Purple Sneakers, Music Feeds, AAA Backstage, and so much more, they are releasing the accompanying music video – a visual representation of the ‘old’ and the ‘new’ within their indigenous culture. As Geoff Fabila states:

“The message that we are bringing to our listeners is that for 60 thousand years, indigenous culture continues to stay strong.”

With the help of videographer Joshua Hickie, the music video (shot on Yuggara and Turrbal land) features dancers Leelana Fabila-Hicks and Derek Sandy, showing the two ends of their culture, their ancestral roots and modern-day interpretations through hip-hop dance. Geoff Fabila continues:

“The thinking through this music video was to best represent our song visually through dance and special types of shots. Throughout the video, there are cuts to both a modern style of dance (hip-hop) by an indigenous dancer [Leelana Fabila-Hicks] and cuts to traditional dance lead by Derek Sandy, a young cultural leader and teacher.”

The juxtaposition of these two dancers innately shows the strength of the indigenous culture and how it continues to pulse through the generations.

“We have many indigenous people innovating and excelling in the modern world we live in today” and Tjaka, alongside many other indigenous people, are showing the importance of maintaining this culture. Fabila finally notes:

“Breaking this message down was our aim for the song both musically, lyrically, and now visually and we hope audiences, wherever they are, enjoy this project we’ve worked hard on along with a very special and talented team.”

‘Break It Down’ and their stunning clip honouring their roots are out now. Catch Tjaka over the next month at one of their upcoming shows across QLD – more information below:

Gold Sounds Music Conference – Program Announcement

by the partae August 30, 2022
written by the partae

From 13-16 October, Central Victoria’s biggest music conference returns for its second year, bringing together Victoria’s regional and Melbourne music communities for a host of panels, workshops, networking events, and a youth program.

Held on Djarra Country in Castlemaine, the conference sessions cover a myriad of topics and play host to an extraordinary array of music industry professionals including artist managers, booking agents, musicians, academics, activists and more.

The conference kicks off in style at The Taproom on Thursday 13 October with a launch of television and radio broadcaster Myf Warhurst’s book The Time of My Life –  described as “a captivating and joyous memoir of wisdom, humour and heart that unleashes the music within us all”. Join Myf in conversation with Gold Sounds Director Fionna Allan, as she shares funny, fabulous and occasionally fraught tales.

Friday 14 October sees the event move to the Phee Broadway Theatre in the centre of Castlemaine. Conference programming will feature sessions on mental health wellness, music and activism, regional festival and venue programming, opportunities and tips when applying for grants and funding, and a session on creative collaboration.

“As our industry recovers from the last few years, focusing on how to look after our own and other’s mental health is as important as ever. Coupled with sessions on how grant funding organisations work, how regional festivals and venues are programmed, and the desire to make important work, either solo or with others, Friday has something for everyone,” said Ms Allan.

On Saturday 15 October, the focus turns to songwriting copyright and licensing, community radio,  marketing and PR and youth-focussed events programmed in direct response to young people. Saturday will also feature a special Yarning Strong panel from Support Act, focussing on breaking down barriers for First Nations artists, including guests Mitch Tambo and Dallas Woods.

“The conference panels are a great opportunity to hear about the journeys of a diverse group of industry legends, from the lessons they have learnt over the years to where they are heading. The Yarning Strong session has Dallas Woods returning to the conference again, sharing his knowledge and experience alongside other talented and passionate First Nations people ,” said Ms Allan.

On Sunday 16 October, musicians take centre stage as songwriting clinics featuring Cash Savage another yet to be announced, held by APRA AMCOS.

“Having an esteemed songwriter like Cash Savage share their knowledge and sit with our local musicians to create something together brings us back to the heart of what we do – producing great music. These sessions are supportive, inspiring and a great springboard for budding songwriters to take that next step,” said Ms Allan.

Gold Sounds Music Conference will also feature music interview training and other practical sessions.

Tickets are on sale Thursday 1 September, 2022, via the Gold Sounds website.

Last year’s inaugural conference featured keynote speeches by industry heavyweights Jen Cloher and Liz Stringer alongside workshops run by two of the region’s biggest stars, Dallas Woods and Jess Ribeiro. Held as Victoria was emerging from lockdown in late 2021, the Conference was delivered as part of Music Victoria’s Regional Music Development program. The inaugural event attracted more than 100 people from the music industry and community across the weekend, and won the Mount Alexander Shire Council Community Event of the Year.
