SOCIAL DISTORTION & BAD RELIGION ANNOUNCE AUSTRALIA & NEW ZEALAND CO-HEADLINE TOUR

by the partae August 23, 2022
written by the partae
Punk rockers of Australia and New Zealand unite! For the first time in history two of the most influential and enduring punk bands of all time are heading down under together. Fans never thought they would see the day so get ready to tick this off your bucket list as LA heavyweights Social Distortion and Bad Religion team up and hit our shores in February 2023.

The tour will kick off at Trusts Arena in Auckland before it makes it way over to Brisbane’s Riverstage, Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion, Margaret Court Arena in Melbourne’s and closing out their Aussie run at Red Hill Auditorium in Perth.

Traversing multiple and significant line-up changes, internal challenges and tragedies, and the demise of the very Los Angeles hardcore scene that conjured them for over four decades, California mainstays Social Distortion have spent a lifetime honing their uncompromising rootsy, hard-hitting brand of punk since first emerging back in the late 70s.

Following the release of the group’s debut 1983 album Mommy’s Little Monster, Social Distortion‘s transformation from pioneers in the then-fertile L.A hardcore scene into a distinctive sonic force to be reckoned with saw the group become one of the few punk bands to be featured on MTV in its 80s glory days and, over time, branching out to cement their now-trademark blend of punk, blues, country and rockabilly. Currently in possession of seven studio albums, with whispers of an eighth full length release on the horizon, Social Distortion‘s live prowess is overshadowed only by the passion and innovation relentlessly on display onstage, fearlessly helmed by the band’s founder, guitarist and vocalist Mike Ness. This is Social Distortion’s first Australian headline tour ever and their second time coming to Australia in over 40 years so it’s fair to say we may not see them ever again!

Bad Religion have become synonymous with retaining their underground credibility alongside building a staggering punk empire since forming back in the early 80s. Constantly on a journey of evolution and philosophical exploration, Bad Religion‘s storied career, including 17 studio albums and the label as one of the best-selling punk rock bands of all time, has seen the group remain relevant and vital in the hardcore community while welding their trademark sonic foundations with inflections of psychedelia, heavy metal, hard rock and lashings of melody along the way.

With front man and remaining original member Greg Graffin‘s steadfast guidance, Bad Religion have defied the odds and expectations of an ever-changing industry around them, touring the globe armed with an overwhelming back catalogue of material, including fan favourite tracks like American Jesus and 21st Century (Digital Boy). Don’t miss out on seeing Bad Religion next February, their first Australian headline tour in over a decade!

Returning to Australia in 2023 since last appearing down under for Good Things Festival back in 2019, don’t miss some Bad Religion goodness next February.

2023 will undeniably declare punk’s not dead – be sure to catch Social Distortion and Bad Religion live in action when they bring their explosive live shows to a town near you.

New Song ‘Break It Down’ From First Nations Band Tjaka Combines Didjeribone + Hip Hop

by the partae August 19, 2022

Previous Support Tor Tjaka

“In addition to bringing the youth perspective, and all of those intriguing instruments, Tjaka are introducing some serious reggae vibes into the mix with this debut single. It’s a statement of intent right out of the box for their sound, which is at once future-facing, a nod to where they’ve come from, and a whole lot more.”
(KCRW feature on Global Beat: Australia)

“‘Fiya’ was one of the first songs the group wrote, its theme of fire being hard to douse once lit acting as the perfect kindling for the heat Tjaka plan to bring with their live show and future releases.”
(Scenestr)

“Dang, I mean the title of this song really speaks for itself doesn’t it – this is FIYA! Genuinely one of the most interesting and original sounds from an act that I’ve heard for a while. So sick to hear the reggae, hiphop & electronic influences coming through, and the didgeridoo adds such a special touch, too. Keen to see you continue to refine the signature Tjaka sound, well done.”
4.5 / 5 (Latifa Tee, Triple J)

“This sounds incredible, and the energy that pumps through it makes it difficult to sit still. Really strong blend of hip hop and reggae, performed with such huge confidence. Love it.”
4 / 5 (Dan Condon, Triple J)

“Somehow feeling very laid back but also capable of making a party go off like a pot lid.”
(Tommy Faith, Triple J)

Stream ‘Break It Down’

A groundbreaking new blend of an electronic and hip-hop fusion combine with Aboriginal ancestral influence on this absolute banger of a tune, ‘Break It Down’. This is the second release from talented First Nations Meanjin/Brisbane-based trio Tjaka, due for release on August 16.

Tjaka is an abbreviation of Tjakamarra, the skin name given to the two Fabila brothers Geoff and Jake, who are proud descendants of the Jabirr Jabirr tribe in the Western Australian Kimberley. Together with family friend and guitar virtuoso Felix Fogarty, they are Tjaka, and their vision is to create music that mixes influences of the past with modern sounds and storytelling.

Their first single ‘Fiya’ has been burning bright across the Eastern Coast, with the group playing to multiple sold-out crowds in 2021 and supporting Kurilpa Reach on their Fat Freddy’s Drop cover tour. Also performing at Jungle Love, Mountain Goat Valley Crawl, Bad Olive and Concrete Jungle, Tjaka has rapidly garnered support for their live shows across the country and will continue to grow their fanbase with this exciting new track.

A super catchy, stirring hip-hop banger, the boys are onto something truly original with ‘Break It Down’, and when they sing ‘I bet you’ve never heard it sound like this’ – they’re absolutely right. The lyrics connect the Fabila brothers’ indigenous roots, and with some impressive rapping skills, command attention and give an instant boost of adrenaline. Featuring bold didjeribone swells, high-energy electronic beats, and a lot of attitude – this is undoubtedly set to heat up airwaves and venues.

The track introduces the use of didjeribone (a slide didjeridoo, similar to a trombone) into contemporary genres, along with the Face Bass, (a seismic microphone that is used from inside the player’s mouth) in an effort to honour culture through music. Tjaka elaborates:

“Lyrically and instrumentally, we aimed to draw the connection from the ‘old’ and the ‘new’ ways of creating music with the sound of the didjeridoo/yidaki. The overall sound of this song is one of the first results of years of experimentation with the didjeribone, the Face-Bass and Ableton software creating the ever-evolving ‘Tjaka’ sound.”

And that sound is certainly making waves. The group have already seen plenty of support from local and international playlists – including Original Storytellers, a couple of KCRW (US) playlists, as well as receiving play on Triple J (Blak Out with Nooky), Triple J Unearthed and Double J, as well as 4ZZZ, FBi, RTRFM and Triple R. On top of that, they’ve racked up over 45.7k streams on Spotify for ‘Fiya’, and dameeeela’s track ‘The Shake Up’ feat. Tjaka has been streamed over 230k times.

To celebrate the release of their showstopping new single ‘Break It Down’ which comes out on August 16, Tjaka will be playing 4 shows across QLD and Northern NSW – more information below:

Choir-Like Harmonies And Cascading Synths Collide In New Single ‘Fade’ By Skyuka

by the partae August 19, 2022
written by the partae

Previous Support For Skyuka

“It’s a fierce and focused pop tune lush with electronic grooves and this larger-than-life assertiveness, channelling names amongst Australian pop’s most exciting as she dives into the dark, moodiness of pop music – something we often don’t see.”
(Pilerats)

“With a little lick of jazz on the vocals, this opens up into a luxuriously dark banger.”
(Gemma Pike, Triple J)

Fusing together electro-pop, indie, and trip-hop with nakedly honest lyrics delivered in soulful falsetto, Boorloo/Perth-based artist/producer Skyuka is already making waves on the West Coast, ready to wash over the nation with shimmering new single ‘Fade’ and accompanying video out on August 19.

Praised for her electrifying stage presence, Skyuka has captivated crowds at Boorloo/Perth’s finest venues – Mojo’s, Rosemount Hotel, Milk Bar, Freo Social and Jack Rabbit Slim’s, and recently played at 2021’s WAMfest. Notably, her collaboration with renowned hip hop artist Bitter Belief for his track ‘Hellbound’ has received over 28,000 streams – a huge feat.

Now, she’s taking listeners on an introspective journey with her forthcoming synth-pop tune, ‘Fade’.

‘Fade’ does anything but, with striking, well-placed beats, a sorrow-filled melody, and choir-like harmonies that collide with cascading synths. Skyuka’s mesmerising vulnerability is amplified by the tenderness in her voice which instantly resonates.

A song that was first written 10 years ago and had been placed in the ‘too hard basket’, ‘Fade’ begged for Skyuka’s attention again when she realised she was repeating old habits. Coming back to it as a more experienced songwriter helped her to finesse it to its final form, as these feelings were inevitably revisited. She explains:

“I was young and naive and had met someone who only wanted a casual relationship. I was hoping I could reciprocate this only to find that it left me feeling completely empty.”
“It’s about all the emotions we go through when someone can’t meet us in the way that we want them to. It’s about losing confidence in ourselves because we break our own promises.”

This mood is captured in the accompanying music video, which was directed by Skyuka and shot and edited by Dylan Guy. The scenes alternate between stillness and chaos, and its dreamlike aesthetic matches the ethereal nature of production on the track. The use of lighting and colour was inspired by the fairy scenes in Disney’s 1940s animated classic, ‘Fantasia’. Of the video, Skyuka says:

“It was about capturing raw emotion and the spectrum of emotions we go through in relationships.”

The journey into Skyuka’s ethereal synth-pop world continues with the release of ‘Fade’, so get ready to listen to the track, watch the video, and pay attention to this rising star from August 19.

‘Fade’ single launch takes place on August 24 at Mojo’s, in Walyalup/Fremantle.

Madi Leeds Takes Us From ‘0-100’ With Her New Single

Previous Support For Madi Leeds

“loving this one madi! the way you fill up those indie sounds with dreamy and anthemic synths and drums works so well.”
(Declan Byrne, Triple J)

“MADI! This one’s uplifting, optimistic and leaves you feeling like you’re high up in the clouds. I love that full of life pop sound in the production. It’s got vibrance and the energy radiates.”
(Claire Mooney, Triple J)

“Madi can gracefully play with a variety of genres to create shimmering soundscapes that stick with you long after they’ve finished playing.”
(AAA Backstage)

“Leeds continues to build herself as an artist to watch. If you’re not already familiar with this artist, we recommend you change that right now.”
(Happy Mag)

“The personality that shines throughout Madi’s music is extremely evident with this track as it delivers her typical anecdotal storytelling that is extremely relatable.”

Stream ‘0-100’
Watch ‘0-100’ Music Video

Wearing her heart on her sleeve, indie-pop artist Madi Leeds from Naarm/Melbourne releases her new single ‘0-100’ with the accompanying lo-fi music video, both out on August 19.

Already a seasoned performer, Leeds played as part of Melbourne Music Week and Moomba Festivals in 2020, Sydney Fringe Festival in 2018, and has also graced stages interstate and overseas in Japan. She boasts an understated yet commanding vocal presence, delivering her playful and personable storytelling with synth pop sounds. The 2020 nostalgia-trippy track ‘Spinelli’ caught the attention of Push Records, and with their help, elevated Leeds’ music to new heights. Leeds recorded the follow-up track, ‘Identity’ with renowned musician and producer Japanese Wallpaper.

Now, she makes her return with ‘0-100’, produced by Hamish Patrick.

The simplicity of acoustic guitar alongside confessional lyrics in the bridge of ‘0-100’ create the perfect lead-up to a buoyant singalong chorus. Varied moments of instrumentation and cleverly crafted hooks put the spotlight on Madi’s storytelling here – the songwriter’s heart-on-your-sleeve approach to exploring a spectrum of feelings is honest and relatable, but it’s all pulled together with her signature sprinkling of playfulness and showcases her knack for making compelling bubbly indie pop.

Shot on a mini DV camcorder, the lo-fi clip was filmed in one take at the Parliament Gardens at night. The film clip has a very 90s aesthetic, and puts viewers up close and personal with Madi, as she shares her story against a backdrop of water fountains and purple lights.

Navigating the extreme opposites of highs and lows, the track explores the all-consuming feeling of self-doubt as Leeds explains:
“‘0-100’ is about the feeling of comparing yourself to others, putting yourself very low on a pedestal, feeling that you are never good enough for someone.”

However, those feelings of inadequacy are eclipsed by cold hard facts when it comes to media support – she’s definitely good enough for Triple J Home & Hosed as well as Good Nights, SYN, Triple R and more. Not only that, Madi’s music has featured on playlists for The Underground Stage, The Australian Music Scene, Pop & Indie (Lefuturewave), The Journey Home, Downunder Ditto, Global Media Pop, Global Money World, Melbourne Affirmations, The Push Office Radio.

And with ‘0-100’ she’s sure to take her bubbly bops even further – track and music video both out August 19, and will be headlining at The Leadbeater Hotel that night. She and her band will be joined by an eclectic all-Victorian lineup of JHM and Local the Neighbour.

DMA’S Return With Blistering New Single ‘I Don’t Need To Hide’ + Announce UK Live Shows

by the partae August 18, 2022

MAIN STAGE APPEARANCES THIS MONTH

DMA’S today share brand-new single, ‘I Don’t Need To Hide’, along with a captivating video directed by Lucy Knox.

DMA’S new material arrives as their first since last year’s celebrated EP I Love You Unconditionally, Sure Am Going To Miss You, which in turn followed the band’s highest charting album to date, THE GLOW (ARIA #2, UK Official Albums Chart #4 and #1 in Scotland).

Pressing play on new single ‘I Don’t Need To Hide’ (produced by Konstantin Kersting and Rich Costey), reveals an immediate and palpable sense of relief, as if a long-held tension has finally come to an end. With ‘I Don’t Need To Hide’, celebration and evolution is in the air.

Over the course of three studio albums to date, DMA’S have found an iconic, mythical status among their fanbase – 65,000 ticket sales on their last UK tour alone shows the open-armed response they elicit on international shores. Their world is one of acceptance, freedom of expression, collective high, and each twist and turn in their journey to this point has led them to what is a landmark single release for the band. ‘I Don’t Need To Hide’ represents the comfort in being embraced but more than that, it exemplifies the biggest talent that DMA’S possess: the ability to distil the wrenches of their personal stories into anthemic universal experiences.

Guitarist Johnny Took comments: “There’s a confidence you obtain when you find someone who loves you for all your faults, quirks and obscurities. They make you feel like you don’t need to hide anything from anyone anymore.”

The single’s video goes one step further in capturing the unbridled euphoria of what it is to enter DMA’S world, and the communal thrill their music brings to the live arena. It’s the feeling of emerging from a darker place, and the exhilarating future sound of a band without barriers at the top of their game.

Thinking about a better time
Thinking about a better way to love
So I don’t need to hide
I don’t need to hide

‘I Don’t Need To Hide’ is released on the heels of several large live music returns for DMA’S. Following their biggest ever Australian headline tour earlier this year – the last show of which will go ahead in Fremantle WA on Sat 1 October much to the delight of incredibly patient west coast fans – the band’s recent UK headline tour saw them sell out London’s Alexandra Palace and play to huge crowds this summer at TRNSMT Festival.

Later this month, DMA’S will take to the main stage at the Reading & Leeds Festivals before a run of October UK headline dates announced today. Australian fans are also in luck with the band scheduled to play Wanderer Festival in September, before finishing up the year playing Falls Festival nationally and kicking off 2023 supporting Arctic Monkeys at their sold out show at The Domain in Sydney.

THESE NEW SOUTH WHALES SHARE NEW SINGLE ‘BENDING AT THE KNEE’ + ANNOUNCE HEADLINE SHOW THIS SEPTEMBER

by the partae August 18, 2022

PRAISE FOR THESE NEW SOUTH WHALES

“No one’s doing things quite like These New South Whales”
The Line Of Best Fit (9/10)

“Absolutely irresistible blasts of insistent, art-punk brilliance”
Kerrang! (4/5)

“TNSW also make a TV comedy about being pathetic punks.
Very meta, except the actual band are great:
tight, no-frills, plaintive vocals, caustic guitar and thumping rhythms”

Mojo, 4/5

“The band is real, the TV show is a hilarious mockumentary”
NME

“Very rowdy, enjoyable punk rock”
theneedledrop

“Sydney’s most revered punk band”
triple j

“The best mockumentary since Spinal Tap”
Monster Children

“A punchy, infectious, and delicious piece of punk fun”
Nick Findlay (triple j)

Thrilling punk outfit These New South Whales return with their first release of 2022, the caustic new single ‘Bending At The Knee‘, alongside the announcement of a headline performance at The Curtin this September. LISTEN + WATCH HERE.

An art-punk masterclass, ‘Bending At The Knee‘ is These New South Whales’ painting from the darker half of their palette – a calculating rage that dials the mood to Turnstile via The Garden, hitting with the same punk je ne sais quoi that drives their hit TV shows, records and podcast; the same stuff that’s made them a once-in-a-generation proposition.

“This song came together very quickly in the rehearsal room one night,” said frontman Jamie Timony of the songwriting process. “Frank started drumming along psychotically to Will’s honkin’ bassline and we were off! I immediately felt like kicking a wheelie bin over—that’s when ya know it’s a good one. It’s also probably the most fun song to play live in our set, I reckon.”

‘Bending At The Knee‘ is staunch-riffed bedlam undergirded by vintage Timony lyrics: a snarling call-to-arms that recalls the band’s politically-driven You Work For Us era. Jamie explains, “I was channeling the confusion and frustration I’d been feeling the last couple of years—I was kinda gobsmacked at the willingness of some to trust the government all of a sudden; albeit in a time of a crisis. What happened to rage against the machine?!”

WATCH THE VIDEO FOR BENDING AT THE KNEE

A sharp new blueprint for the harder reaches of punk rock akin to their contemporaries Amyl and The Sniffers to Violent Soho, today’s new release is everything that’s made These New South Whales one of Australia’s most respected bands: punk royals and provocateurs for a decade and counting. Fitting, then, that the film clip, directed by Oscar O’Shea, might put the four-piece in a Victorian-era estate, a kilted Jamie Timony (vocals) cutting a brooding figure: hunched over a silver-cloched banquet; stalking grim halls; backlit in an iron-gated cellar.

‘Bending At The Knee‘ follows the group’s recent signing to Clowns‘ label, Damaged Records, and a string of sold-out appearances at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival earlier this year for their hit podcast, What A Great Punk, where the band made history once again, selling out all four dates within 24 hours. For all tour dates + info, see BELOW.

THESE NEW SOUTH WHALES – BENDING AT THE KNEE

ABOUT THESE NEW SOUTH WHALES

These New South Whales — the band — are one of Australia’s most revered punk acts. But they also make groundbreaking comedy TV, and they star in it. Real band on stage, real band on record, deeply funny parody of a toiling band on screen. “The punk Flight of the Conchords,” said NME of their TV shows, “art-punk brilliance,” said Kerrang of their music. Their first two LPs, You Work For Us (‘Cholesterol Heart (God Bless Ya) and I Just Do What God Tells Me To Do, including hits ‘Nerve 2 Reverse‘ and ‘In The Light Of Day‘, were charged with the same frenetic energy that defines their live show, winning critical praise and legions of global fans who resonated with their physical, incisive brand of punk.

Their hit podcast What A Great Punk — an earnest, hilarious fly-on-the-wall interview series — has become a Monday-morning ritual for its devoted followers. And with the release of their new talk show-style comedy series TNSW Tonight! adding to an on-screen oeuvre that already boasts two seasons of their cult Comedy Central mockumentary, These New South Whales has matured into a project like no other. What began as a gag has evolved into something utterly unique: a multidisciplinary artistic universe teeming with lore and lols.

New Song ‘Break It Down’ From First Nations Band Tjaka Combines Didjeribone + Hip Hop

by the partae August 16, 2022
written by the partae

Previous Support Tor Tjaka

“In addition to bringing the youth perspective, and all of those intriguing instruments, Tjaka are introducing some serious reggae vibes into the mix with this debut single. It’s a statement of intent right out of the box for their sound, which is at once future-facing, a nod to where they’ve come from, and a whole lot more.”
(KCRW feature on Global Beat: Australia) [About ‘Fiya’]

“‘Fiya’ was one of the first songs the group wrote, its theme of fire being hard to douse once lit acting as the perfect kindling for the heat Tjaka plan to bring with their live show and future releases.”
(Scenestr) [About ‘Fiya’]

“Dang, I mean the title of this song really speaks for itself doesn’t it – this is FIYA! Genuinely one of the most interesting and original sounds from an act that I’ve heard for a while. So sick to hear the reggae, hiphop & electronic influences coming through, and the didgeridoo adds such a special touch, too. Keen to see you continue to refine the signature Tjaka sound, well done.”
4.5 / 5 (Latifa Tee, Triple J) [About ‘Fiya’]

“This sounds incredible, and the energy that pumps through it makes it difficult to sit still. Really strong blend of hip hop and reggae, performed with such huge confidence. Love it.”
4 / 5 (Dan Condon, Triple J) [About ‘Fiya’]

“Somehow feeling very laid back but also capable of making a party go off like a pot lid.”
(Tommy Faith, Triple J) [About ‘Fiya’]

THE CHATS RELEASE VIDEO FOR “OUT ON THE STREET” NEW ALBUM GET F*CKED OUT THIS FRIDAY!

by the partae August 16, 2022
written by the partae

This Friday, The Chats’ rip-roaring, epic second album, unapologetically titled, GET F*CKED will be released on their own label, Bargain Bin Records, so today the band have released the final track, titled “Out On The Street” ahead of full release on August 19th.

The new video for “Out On The Street” features The Chats on the road smashing out their infectious, sing-along punk rock. The culmination of high-energy live footage was captured by Maclay Heriot who followed the band through their 2022 USA tour, with footage taken from Coachella, kicking footies in venue carparks, and a whole bunch of intense US shows.

The Chats have been touring throughout 2022 playing in front of huge crowds across many countries and Australia is up next with a whip around the country slated for September. Kicking off at the Odeon Theatre in Hobart on September 10 and winding up at The Metropolis in Fremantle on September 24, tickets are on sale now at www.thechatslovebeer.com.

Last month, the trio played their frenetic live show at Splendour In The Grass Fest in North Byron Parklands on home soil, where they thrashed through “Smoko” in front of a packed stage – the tune that pushed them into the ears of millions of online listeners at warp speed. Watch the live performance video here.

“Smoko” was just the gateway drug for a life of Chats dependence. Rather like The White Stripes’ “Seven Nation Army”, it started routinely enough, as the lead track on The Chats’ second EP, Get This In Ya!!, but since October ’17, when singer/bassist Eamon posted an accompanying video – which cost them just $5, for the sauced-up sausage roll snarfed on camera – it’s accrued a staggering 16 million YouTube views and counting, as well as enthusiastic props and radio plays from Elton John, Michael Stipe, Nick Cave, Iggy Pop, Josh Homme and Dave Grohl along the way.

Fast forward through to 2022 and The Chats are about to release their much awaited second album, GET F*CKED – an incendiary, hyper-adrenalized blitz from punk heaven, showcasing an electrifying all-killer-no-filler 13 tracks which perfectly capture the band’s explosive energy.

Cousin Tony’s Brand New Firebird release new track ‘Red Dirt Angel’, announce tour, new album Aug 26

by the partae August 16, 2022
written by the partae

Today beloved Melbourne band Cousin Tony’s Brand New Firebird release their driving latest single ‘Red Dirt Angel’, and announce details about their biggest album tour to date kicking off in September. On their new track, Lachlan Rose proves again that he can combine addictive melodies and poetic lyrics with a comment on modern Australia. Along with the other tracks from their new album, ‘Red Dirt Angel’ was written during the last Melbourne lockdown.

“An Australia dreamscape, ‘Red Dirt Angel’ was the first song that opened up the doors to ‘Smiles of Earth’ – the album it now belongs to. Somewhere during our lengthy Melbourne lockdowns I began dreaming constantly of the outback. The red dirt angel was a faceless usher who continuously led me through the arid, red-earth deserts of Australia. I longed to be behind the wheel of a filthy car with no real destination. For one reason or another, that visual represented ultimate freedom for me, which is the one thing none of us had. The song followed shortly. It’s unapologetically Australian, euphoric and a contribution to the wonderful world of road trip music.” Lachlan Rose (Vox/Piano/Synths/Guitar)

‘Red Dirt Angel’ is a timeless and intricate song – an ode to the arid adventures awaiting us in the post-pandemic world. It was mixed by Melbourne-born, Los Angeles-based talent Matthew Neighbour (Matt Corby, The Avalanches, Sky Ferreira) and co-produced by Stephen Charles (Ali Barter, Gretta Ray) and Lachlan Rose at The Aviary in Melbourne.

Having endured multiple lockdowns and canceled gigs, Cousin Tony’s Brand New Firebird are now poised for the wide open road and are excited to announce an extensive east coast run of shows to support their upcoming album; with more shows TBA.

“I think we’re the kind of band that wins people over one heart at a time. Playing shows is fundamental to who we are. The last few years have reminded us with absolute certainty that there is nothing quite like the live music experience, and we couldn’t be more excited or more grateful to be on the road again.”

CHAPTER MUSIC ANNOUNCES 30TH BIRTHDAY PARTY FEATURING PERFORMANCES FROM NO ZU, LAURA JEAN, GREGOR, TEETHER & KUYA NEIL AND MORE

CHAPTERFEST 30
Presented by ALWAYS LIVE & Triple R

Saturday, November 5 | Northcote Theatre, Melbourne | Tickets

In June 1992, seventeen-year-old, self-described “pimple-faced nerd” Guy Blackman put out a compilation cassette of bands from his Perth hometown called Bright Lights, Small City. He had to use fake ID to attend the launch of the cassette at the Shenton Park Hotel.

Thirty years later, Chapter Music is still alive and kicking, having endured and blossomed across eras such as 90s lo-fi jangle, 2000s post-punk revival, 2010s lo-fi jangle revival and 2020s post-punk revival-revival. Chapter has now spent three decades as a tireless champion of Australian independent music and one of Australia’s longest running and most influential labels.

Guy moved to Melbourne in 1995, where Ben O’Connor joined the fold as Chapter work and life partner. There was a six-year period where records were pressed by hand by Guy at vinyl plant Corduroy Records, then a spell in Japan where Ben & Guy documented the amazing music they discovered there. Back in Melbourne since 2004, they have released earth-shaking artists like Beaches, Crayon Fields, Dick Diver, The Goon Sax, Gregor, Kath Bloom, Laura Jean, Pikelet, Sweet Whirl, Smokey, Teether & Kuya Neil, Twerps, and many more.

Awakenings announces ADE 2022 program, unveils no less than nine events with Charlotte de Witte, Carl Cox, Amelie Lens, and more

by the partae August 12, 2022
written by the partae

Awakenings makes a big splash for its 25th Anniversary, announcing no less than nine events during this year’s Amsterdam Dance Event. This year the iconic Gashouder in Amsterdam will once again be the backdrop for six ADE Awakenings events, and after a successful series of shows in 2021, the Ziggo Dome also joins the program for another three shows, of which the Friday event will be announced soon. With headliners like Amelie Lens, Joris Voorn, Carl Cox, Charlotte de Witte, and many more of the biggest names in the scene, Awakenings promises to be the highlight of an already unprecedented Amsterdam Dance Event.

Awakenings’ annual programming for ADE is known for impressive techno events, featuring the biggest names in the scene at iconic venues. Awakenings’ ADE Opening Night will take place on October 19 at Amsterdam’s Gashouder, the techno temple where it all began for Awakenings. The event will kick off a wild week of shows with Hector Oaks, Nina Kraviz and Cera Khin, as well as Drumcode Records boss Adam Beyer, ANNA, Pan-Pot, Richie Hawtin, Amoral, Kobosil, Joseph Capriati, Dave Clarke, and Speedy J. Besides the standout night programming, daytime events will be hosted on October 22 and 23 by none other than Spectrum’s labelboss Joris Voorn and Awakenings resident Amelie Lens, bringing names like Ben Klock b2b Marcel Dettmann, ONYVAA, 999999999, and Helena Hauff to complete the 2022 Gashouder line-up.

But that’s not all, as Awakenings will also be taking to Amsterdam’s Ziggo Dome for ADE’s biggest techno event. On Saturday, October 22, scene pioneer and Awesome Soundwaves co-owner Carl Cox will take over the Ziggo Dome during the day for ‘Carl Cox Invites’, where Reinier Zonneveld and KiNK, among others, will treat fans with astounding live performances. In the evening, techno queen Charlotte de Witte will take over the decks, bringing raw sound to the Ziggo Dome with her cohort of KNTXT label artists, including FJAAK, I Hate Models, and Indira Paganotto.

After a traditional Easter weekend filled with events, this year in both Spaarnwoude and the Gashouder, as well as a successful first edition of Awakenings Summer Festival, with three days of camping in Hilvarenbeek, the organisation is now preparing for an ADE like they have never done before. Tickets for all shows will be available starting today at 7pm CEST via www.awakenings.nl.
