MONOLITH FESTIVAL returns…and it’s living up to its name!

by the partae July 10, 2024
written by the partae

‘GOOD APOLLO, I’M BURNING STAR IV, VOLUME ONE: FROM FEAR THROUGH MADNESS’ in its entirety on their first Australian tour since 2016

Monolith launched on to the Australian festival circuit in 2022 to incredible success. Scenestr remarked “If I’m asked if the festival was good – that’d be a big hell yes! Monolith’s Brisbane leg was a crushing success” whilst Wall of Sound commented that “Leaving Monolith on that high, felt like leaving a church service, where you were praising at the altar of prog-rock/metal”.

Monolith is thrilled to announce its triumphant return, bringing an unbeatable curation of international names and Australian favourites to venues around the country this November.

Alongside the incredible lineup will be workshops, panels, market stalls and DJ’s to further enhance the festival experience for Australian prog fans.

Headlined by New York prog rock icons Coheed And Cambria on their first Australian tour since 2016, Monolith 2024 comes out the gate swinging.

An unbeatable live act, Coheed and Cambria are making their long overdue return with a special Neverender set performing their critically acclaimed album ‘Good Apollo, I’m Burning Star IV, Volume One: From Fear Through Madness’ in its entirety.

Widely regarded as one of their most impactful records, ‘Good Apollo, Volume One’ has sold over 1 million copies worldwide, showcasing their signature conceptual brilliance and musicality.

Along with the Monolith headline set, fans will be treated to a unique Q&A panel: Celebrating 20 Years Of The Amory Wars: The Past, Present And Future with Claudio Sanchez. The panel will delve into the band’s series of graphic novels and comics, providing a deeper understanding of the intricate world that Coheed and Cambria have created.

Washington D.C.’s Periphery, make their long-awaited return to Australia. The band’s latest album, ‘Periphery V: Djent Is Not A Genre’, brought the group critical acclaim, cementing Periphery as leaders in modern progressive metal.   With seven self-produced studio albums to their name, the Grammy-nominated five-piece have continued to defy the boundaries of conventionality, bringing new life to the progressive metal world.

Innovative Norwegian progressive metal outfit Leprous joins the Monolith lineup as another exciting addition, with the five-piece set to bring their new album ‘Melodies of Atonement’ (set for release this August) to Australia, along with a selection of dynamic cuts from their seven-album strong catalogue. The music of Leprous has been praised for its avant-garde approach to alternative metal and prog, with Tor Oddmund Suhrke and Einar Solberg’s compositions continuously ensuring that the band’s central sound chases a blend of genres, instead of aligning itself with one and one alone.

The celebration continues with the inclusion of Canadian instrumental group Intervals. Formed in Toronto in 2011, Intervals quickly earned their stripes as a fresh force in the djent and prog metal scene. Masterful instrumentalists with a savvy hold on melody and arrangement, Intervals have continued to produce material that redefines their vision; their 2014 debut ‘A Voice Within’ established a strong presence, and through into their latest album, 2023’s ‘Memory Palace’, the band has shown no signs of wavering.

Adding some more European flair to the lineup for Monolith, is French metalcore/prog five-piece Novelists who will tour Australia for the first time this November. 2023 marked a new era for the band with the addition of vocalist Camille Contreras, solidifying their status as a respected and influential force in the contemporary metal scene.

Completing the stacked Monolith lineup for 2024, is Melbourne’s Silver Fang– appearing at each festival date except Sydney. Emerging onto the scene with their debut single ‘Cross-Talk’ in 2022, the four-piece quickly built on early buzz; capturing an exciting blend of metalcore, gothic and electronic music that has created an unique sonic playground from which they create today. The band’s 2024 project ‘Labyrinth’ reinforces the fresh perspective Silver Fang have on modern heavy music – they represent the new wave of young innovative artists putting their own twist on the foundational genre sounds.

In addition to electrifying performances, fans will be treated to unique experiences, including a Q&A panel: ‘Celebrating 20 years of ‘The Amory Wars’: The past, present and future’ with Claudio Sanchez, guitar and drum  workshops with Periphery, Keyan and David Parkes and much more.

Don’t Miss an epic day this November at Monolith! One stage, no clashes.

Christine Tarquinio: The Inspiration Behind “New Year’s Day”

by the partae July 7, 2024
written by the partae

Can you tell us about the inspiration behind your latest single, “New Year’s Day”?

This song is all about that feeling, the buzz of excitement around New Year’s Day. The genuine feeling we get that a new year is coming and anything is possible. We all get a chance to start again and reach for new heights.

Then as the days turn into weeks and the weeks turn into months. We have to acknowledge that nothing has actually changed, and you are still the same and doing all the same things. I wrote this song at the beginning of this year feeling like this but now we are almost halfway through the year I have found my experience is the opposite.

How did working with Daniel Nieberg influence the final sound of “New Year’s Day”?

Daniel is amazing at producing music and he interprets my lyrics and music with such care and attention to detail. He is also very collaborative and always is open to suggestions on any other elements that could change the flow of the final track. He seeks out details of what songs inspire me, and he uses that framework to compose a beautiful soundscape that I can then record vocals onto.

What themes and messages do you hope listeners take away from “New Year’s Day”?

I really hope that this song resonates with a wide audience as everyone experiences New Year’s Day in their own way, however that feeling of new beginnings is universal. Everyone has hopes and dreams for their future but often life has a way of surprising you, sometimes for the better, but not always. I see this song as an anthem of renewal and opportunity to try again.

How have your personal experiences as a mother influenced the songwriting process for this track?

Absolutely, everyday life is an opportunity to write a song. New Year’s Day is such a special time for my family, so it magnified my feelings of hope and wanting new and exciting things to happen in a brand-new year. My children take such an interest in my music, and they really enjoyed seeing the process of how this song and many others were created. I really relish the opportunity to impart on them what I know about creating music in the hope that one day they may do the same.

You mentioned feeling like nothing had changed at the beginning of the year. How did that sentiment evolve over the months?

I have found that my sentiment for how things would turn out this year has completely changed. There have been a few things that have happened that I didn’t see coming and never expected but as life changing as they were, they strengthened my resolve to pursue my dreams and it always leads me back to my music.

How do you balance your roles as a musician, singing teacher, and dedicated mother?

I must do this with great consideration. I have made a point of setting boundaries and being realistic about what I can take on as a singing teacher and musician. I have been fortunate enough to always seem to get the balance right and sometimes that means saying I must either say I can’t do that specific thing right now as I have to prioritise my family. It seems to work out in the end, so I am very grateful for that.

In what ways do your children inspire your music and your creative process?

I am really delighted that my children have been exposed to music from a very young age and now that they are older, they are now taking more of an interest in playing instruments and writing lyrics and making up songs of their own. I feel so proud of them, I see the result of them being inspired by me, it spurs me on to keep creating my music.

What challenges have you faced in maintaining your music career while raising a family?

There have been many times I have taken a break from music due to family commitments or just general family life. It usually isn’t for very long and it is always necessary to put family first. It has never been a case of me having to choose one over the other. I know my music will always bet here when I am ready to start working on it again. Family is my priority, and it is important to take pause and be present in family life when it matters most.

Can you describe the significance of hope and resilience in your music, particularly in “New Year’s Day”?

The entire premise of this song is about the attempt we make to reach certain goals, we even make resolutions to do or stop doing certain things, we put pressure on ourselves to seek out a different type of life and we feel disappointed if we don’t achieve our goals. This song is all about second chances. The lyric ‘Let’s start again on New Year’s Day’ is all about when some things don’t go to plan, we have a chance to try again next year. I try to view the world with a glass half full attitude, and I am always striving to be positive and see the good things that the future will hold for all of us.

How do you incorporate your everyday experiences and emotions into your songwriting?

I feel I have experienced a lot of life so far in my journey and I have a lot to offer in my way of storytelling. Being a mum, a wife, a sister and daughter is a common thread I can draw upon and connect to an audience with. My everyday life and my stories are all I know, and I use that to weave into my music and lyrics to share a little bit of insight into how I see and navigate my world around me.

What has been the most profound event in your life recently, and how has it impacted your music?

I have recently left a job (not musically related) that I have been doing for 26 years and it had a profound impact on me. It was something I never ever thought would happen and it completely surprised me. It occurred around the time I released New Year’s Day, and as it turned out I ended up feeling a deeper connection to the message of this song. It has only given me more time and freedom to create more music so something that initially was really challenging to go through has given me a new perspective and gratitude for what I have and the desire to keep creating my music.

Looking forward to 2024 and beyond, what are your goals and aspirations for your music career?

I see myself continuing to write songs and collaborate with amazing artists, musicians, producers, filmmakers to share my music with the world. The world is such a smaller place now with the connectivity we have online, and the reach is so much further than it ever used to be. I am excited to see just how far my music can reach and where it will take me into this year and the next decade.

There is no more fitting headliner for Palm Tree Music Festival 2024 than global hitmakers The Chainsmokers, with the GRAMMY® winning duo Drew Taggart and Alex Pall set to head back to Aus for the first time in five years. The band have set the cultural tempo and delivered some of the biggest songs in the world, hosting a historic multi-year Las Vegas residency, packing arenas on multiple continents, launching first-of-its-kind games in the metaverse, and selling tens of millions of singles along the way, scoring three Diamond singles, namely the Billboard Hot 100 #1 ‘Closer’ [feat. Millz’ returns to Australia after his first headline tour in 2024 which cemented his status as a favourite on the scene.

We love Zenless Zone Zero, and we can’t wait to have this anthem out.” – Lucas & Steve

Tiësto

GRAMMY® Award-winning, platinum-certified, international icon, Tiësto has over 8B global streams across platforms, 36M+ total record sales, 30M+ social audience and over 160M TikTok video views across users. The DJ and producer is the only artist to ever hold the titles of “The Greatest DJ of All Time” courtesy of Mixmag, #1 DJ according to Rolling Stone, and “The Godfather of EDM,” as proclaimed by Billboard. From his underground dance floor bangers to his high-profile Las Vegas residency and crossover success, Tiësto created the blueprint that defines what it means to be a success in today’s dance music world.

Lucas & Steve

Safe to say, Lucas & Steve have gained a worldwide appeal with their high-energy DJ performances while delivering an impressive string of hit songs that explored the boundaries between raving festival anthems and precious pop gems. Evolving from their late 10’s club hits, the duo went on to release full-fledged chart smashes, including 2020’s “Perfect” (feat. Haris), their revamp of 90’s hit “No Diggity” together with R&B icons Blackstreet, their huge team-up with Afrojack and Dubvision for one of 2021’s biggest anthems “Anywhere With You” and 2023 favorite “After Midnight.” Following their early 2024 hits “When I Wake Up” and “End Of Time,” which are still gaining traction with millions of streams as we speak, the guys are now in full festival swing.

Silent Child

Silent Child has emerged as a well-respected artist, with hit singles like “F*ck You” amassing millions of streams across various platforms. Born in Georgia, he used music as a means of self-expression after being diagnosed with ADHD and Asperger’s at a young age. This passion has propelled his career, achieving hundreds of millions of streams within just five years in the industry. Despite global challenges, Silent Child released some of his most popular tracks, including “Super Villain” and “Me & My Demons.” These songs, along with support from tastemakers and YouTube channels like Mr. Suicide Sheep, have significantly expanded his reach, introducing his music to millions. His releases through major labels such as Monstercat, Columbia Records, and CloudKid have further solidified his presence in the music scene. Jonasu Discusses New Solo Journey with “Close My Eyes”

by the partae July 3, 2024
written by the partae

What made you decide to switch up your sound with “Close My Eyes,” and what inspired this new direction?

Hey there! Thanks for all those great questions already. So in the beginning of this year, I started writing music just by myself. In the songwriting world you usually meet up with 2 or 3 co-writers and write songs together. After so many years of always co-writing with others, I was just curious about what would be the outcome, if I was doing music just by myself. I didn’t even plan on creating a new sound or direction, or even releasing anything, it was first just for myself to explore and have fun. And I guess that’s when good stuff happens, when you have fun and just follow your intuition.

Can you give us the lowdown on how “Close My Eyes” came together? How was it different from your previous work?

Yeah so the whole process is completely different when writing music alone, I felt a lot more freedom to explore and try out. Usually you kinda find your role within a session, may it be writing melodies or lyrics or just focusing on the production. This time I was just taking it step by step and worked on the part I was excited about and then moved on to the next section. It definitely is ‘harder’ work to write alone, because there is no immediate feedback, which is why cowriting works so well. The freedom was very liberating, also you can take as much time as you want for the song

You’ve said “Close My Eyes” is one of your most personal tracks. What kind of personal yarns or feelings did you draw on for this one?

So I had the idea for the concept first, which is about seeing someone you love leave. To me a very strong feeling that I experienced many times in my life, whether that was a break-up or a long distance relationship, or just a summer love that had an expiration date. All those moments and memories went into this song.

This is your first track where you’re also having a go at singing. What made you decide to chuck your own vocals into “Close My Eyes,” and how did that change the way you worked on it?

I guess that was just one of the consequences of writing music by myself haha I did not have a singer and had to sing myself. Singing is a lot of fun, but first it feels very strange hearing your own voice, especially when you are spoiled and used to working with amazing singers. I was pretty shy playing the song to people in the first place, but thankfully they were all supportive and gave me confidence.

The song’s about the tough times in long-distance relationships. Can you spill the beans on what specific themes and emotions you wanted to get across in the lyrics?

It’s funny how feelings get tricky when there is physical distance. It is starting to develop into emotional distance and you start drifting apart. I didn’t want to blame one side/person in the lyrics but make clear it’s the circumstance only that makes everything more complicated, although they still have strong feelings for each other. It is about the moment, when you know you have to say goodbye and you wish time would stop and save you, so you don’t have to depart. Hence closing your eyes, trying to save yourself from reality and trying to keep the moment alive.

You mentioned that “Close My Eyes” has some massive summer vibes and is perfect for a cruise along the coast. How did you get those elements into the track?

Yeah true, the sound design is pretty vibey. One big part is the mellotron, which is an old sampler used a lot in hip hop. The sound is a sampled flute, which to me is instant nostalgia. Then there is one lead synth that wobbles around and makes the mood floaty and dreamy. Combined with a tight house groove it just feels like the soundtrack for driving down the coast!

How does flying solo on a track compare to your previous gigs co-writing and working with other musos? What were some of the challenges and rewards of doing it all yourself?

(I think I kinda answered this above?)

With “Close My Eyes” being a big milestone for you, what’s next on the horizon? Are there any upcoming projects or collabs you’re stoked about?

It feels like ‘Close My Eyes’ started a new chapter and there are plenty more songs coming soon, some of them solo too, but others with amazing collabs and vocalists. I will play a few shows and showcases this summer, where I can play all the unreleased music. So that’s super exciting. And hopefully I can come to Melbourne any time soon to play you all that music, it’s been on my bucket list for a while 🙂

Suara Festival introduces single day passes and unveils  extensive arts and culture programming featuring the best of Bali

Suara Festival, Bali’s premier music and arts festival, slated for next month (July 26-28), has released single day passes for its highly anticipated three-day event, alongside details regarding its rich programming across art, food, culture, performance and wellness bolstering its global attraction. Set against the stunning backdrop of Nuanu City during its soft opening weekend, Suara promises an unparalleled fusion of music, art, wellness, and community engagement, appealing to individuals of all ages and backgrounds. With a global contemporary lineup set to stun alongside the region’s best represented across nine stages, Nuanu City’s picture perfect location perched on cliffs overlooking the Indian Ocean on 44 hectares of rolling hills filled with magnificent flora and fauna, will offer an immersive and culturally inclusive experience from the jungle to the dancefloor. For international guests eager for an experiential holiday staying in nearby Canggu or those living domestically pining for a festive weekend escape, Suara is a must for lovers of wellness, music and artistic expression.

Beyond the multi genre and highly-curated music programming, this year’s offering includes a stage takeover in partnership with Mandala for club members, their guests and premium ticket holders, as well as visual and larger-than-life installation art by the likes of renowned South African artist Daniel Popper as well as a variety of traditional Balinese performances, aerialists and fire twirlers will roam the festival grounds. An artisan market featuring merchants from across the island, as well as food vendors peddling flavours from Indonesia and the world will also cater to festivalgoers palates and shopping needs. Other elements include a relaxing and enriching wellness program and a family zone complete with a nanny service  run by Jungle Kids, the Nuanu international kindergarten that emphasizes learning through play and nature-based experiences. Lastly, an impressive speaker lineup covering topics as varied as the Balinese philosophy of ‘Tri Hita Karana’, impact and innovation will leave festivalgoers feeling inspired and invigorated to carry forward learnings into the world post festival.

Now in its third year, Suara Festival is the mastermind of Nuanu City Founder and visionary Sergey Solonin and Alexander Shursh who together last year invited Do What You Love creative agency Owner Jason Swamy onboard as Co-Founder, CEO and Creative Director to catapult the festival onto the world stage. Bringing with him a wealth of global experience shaping the fabric of the cultural zeitgeist from the depths of the desert in Nevada to the beachside tropics of Thailand and many more places in between, Swamy is credited with helping birth the ‘deep house’ genre. Having previously held director level roles with Burning Man’s Robot Heart, Further Future Festival in the United States and Thailand’s Wonderfruit (Asia’s first sustainable music festival), alongside a slew of brands and cultural institutions like Edition, LACMA Art Basel, M+Museum and NetEase, Swamy has spent the last 25 years working with emerging and up-and-coming artists through to three-star Michelin chefs, Grammy and Oscar winners.

Swamy expressed his excitement, stating: ”While we have an incredible melting pot of artists from across Bali, Southeast Asia and the world who will grace one of our many stages in July, Suara is so much more than a music festival. It’s an odyssey through Balinese culture where nature, community and spirituality seamlessly integrate. This is known as ‘Tri Hita Karana’ and this philosophy is the essence of Suara whether we’re talking about food, music, visual and performing arts, wellness, or our family and speaker program.”

“The festival name means ‘voice’ in Indonesian and so our aim is to facilitate a platform for Bali to share its incredibly rich and unique heritage with the world. Coupled with our global entertainment lineup it really is the epitome of ‘East meets West’.”

In tandem with the release of single day tickets, the headline acts for each day of the festival are also announced. American alt-pop talent Neil Frances (Duo set) are slated to headline on the Friday, hypnotic vocalists HVOB (live) and W Hotels Global Music Director and DJ and producer LP Giobbi slotted for the Saturday, and Aussie folk favourites Angus & Julia Stone as the main Suara headline act to close out the festival on the Sunday evening. The headline acts are complemented by a bespoke roster of the world’s most respected indie artists including Brandt Brauer Frick making their Bali debut, singer/songwriter/producer Youngr, instrumental samplists and bouncy beatmakers Geju, Australian pop siblings Lastlings, GRAMMY-nominees Mansionair, award-winning melodic house and techno producer Rodriguez Jr. (live), Akumandra label founder Sainte Vie (live) alongside regional stars like Ramengvrl, Yung Raja, DJ Wordy, and Jonathan Kusuma. A host of collectives from across Asia Pacific will also be dialling up the dancefloor with their eclectic showcases taking place from day into night.

Suara Festival Co-Founder and Nuanu Founder Sergey Solonin also shared his enthusiasm for this year’s edition stating, “I am thrilled to welcome everyone to Nuanu as we open our doors for the first time during this year’s Suara Festival. This event symbolises our vision of creating a space where culture, art, and community thrive together. Suara Festival is more than just a celebration; it’s an invitation to experience the harmony and creativity that Nuanu represents.”

Adds Swamy, “This is not for the passive-minded. Rather it is designed to be participatory in every possible way. By bringing so many talented people and purveyors together and with so many lovers of music, culture and art set to join us from all over, we are reshaping the future of the festival experience. I couldn’t think of a better backdrop for it than the Island of the Gods. See you on the dancefloor.”

Nuanu meaning ‘in the process’, embodies a commitment to harmonious living. Its vibrant community of creators, leaders, and changemakers is empowered to foster a culture of positive change. Designed as an integrated ecosystem, the city is spearheading 32 projects and has eight recreational spaces for education, art and culture, wellness, experience, and nature-inspired living, envisioning a future where these elements seamlessly intertwine.

As a thank you to the locals, the festival has allocated a number of tickets to a number of nearby Balinese communities. Melbourne Ska Orchestra’s 2024 Outlaws and Offbeats Tour

by the partae July 2, 2024
written by the partae

A milestone for many, often signifying the transition into adulthood, approaching the 21 year age bracket is always something to be celebrated. And in 2024, the 21st anniversary for the ARIA Award-winning collective Melbourne Ska Orchestra is set to bring the festivities to fans across Australia, with the band today proudly announcing the Outlaws and Offbeats Tour kicking off this August before whipping around the country well into October.

Commencing in Cairns on Friday 16 August, the Outlaws and Offbeats Tour will then head to Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast, before making its way through Newcastle, Wollongong, Sydney, Canberra, Castlemaine, Margaret River, Perth and Melbourne, and is set to close out in spectacular style on Saturday 19 October in Adelaide. Tickets for the upcoming Outlaws and Offbeats Tour are available now from melbourneskaorchestra.com.

Forming in the early 2000s and comprising up to 26 members, the sonic juggernaut that is Melbourne Ska Orchestra is one beating at its core with technical brilliance and infectious joy. Bringing their own unique take on the ska genre, Melbourne Ska Orchestra boasts some of Australia’s finest musicians and performances, helmed by the indomitable charisma of Nicky Bomba (John Butler Trio, Bomba, Bustamento). And from the group’s early days in 2003 wowing Melbourne crowds through to seven full-length albums, two ARIA Award wins and several nominations, and millions of streams worldwide, 2024 finds the talented collective now on the cusp of celebrating 21 years in action; and, as Bomba shares, there’s zero sign of Melbourne Ska Orchestra slowing down anytime soon. “It’s been quite an amazing journey so far,” says Bomba. “This whole ramshackle thing we call the orchestra was created from a love of ska and the fun vibes surrounding it all. We had no idea it would translate so well with everyone, and it still feels like we have a lot more to create.”

Energetic, bombastic and bustling with hilarious and finely-honed mayhem, a Melbourne Ska Orchestra live show is eternally one for the ages, with performances in their wake including multiple major festival appearances, three international tours as well as countless Australia appearances along the way. And it’s in 2024 that the group are sharing the love with hometown fans across the country once more, with the Outlaws and Offbeats Tour set to showcase not just the infamously infectious Melbourne Ska Orchestra live show, but also the marvel that accompanies witnessing so many talented musicians in the one room when MSO roll through town. “As always the MSO show is a bit of a spectacular time with great tunes, upvibes, energising grooves and a real connection with the crowd,” shares Bomba of what fans can expect on the upcoming tour. “We believe a strong interaction with the audience is vital to great experience.”

“It’s always a military operation getting this band on the road,” Bomba continues, “much like a soccer team playing in the national competition. So, when all the planets align and we’re actually on the plane and in the bus and doing soundchecks it’s really a ready-made family party. We always have fun. We usually go out with a touring party of 20+. That’s a lot of rooms, airfares and a hefty catering expense. I feel sorry for our tour manager sometimes but thankfully he has a happy disposition!”

Consistently creating and releasing new music over the years, from their self-titled 2013 debut album through to 2016’s Sierra Kilo Alpha, 2016’s Saturn Return, 2018’s Ska Classics, 2018’s TV & Movie Themes and Read All About It!, and 2019’s Transmission Friday’s, Melbourne Ska Orchestra also unleashed a live album in 2020, as well as two compilation albums, including the ARIA-winning One Year Of Ska in 2019 and, most recently 2023’s 20 Years Young. Embracing influences spanning classic OG Jamaican Ska from The Skatalites, Toots and The Maytals and early Bob Marley, Melbourne Ska Orchestra’s fresh-faced take on the ska realms also draws nods from the Two-Tone UK wave, including The Specials, Madness along with a cocktail of grooves from around the world including Funk, Reggae, Cumbia, Dancehall, Salsa, Samba and healthy seasoning of Jazz. Self-described by Bomba as a “ramshackle Ska Train hanging loose on the rails”, the Melbourne Ska Orchestra experience routinely transcends its jubilant sonic roots, connecting fans with boundless passion and sharp delivery with each new release and live show; and it’s this very fact that has permeated the group’s entire 21 years of existence. “I feel pretty lucky to perform music that I love with an amazing array of musical outlaws!” Bomba says. “This mighty big band really is a spectacle to behold and the energy that I feel on stage inspires me to connect with our audiences on the highest level possible.  Outlaws and Offbeats indeed!

Viva La Melbourne Ska Orchestra!”

And as to what fans can expect from the upcoming Outlaws and Offbeats Tour? “We’ll be adding some new things to the show to give our fans a different twist,” Bomba concludes, “and we’re working on some tour specific fun.”

Fabric Sculptures, Collectors Are Fighting to Get on the Waitlist!

by the partae July 2, 2024
written by the partae

Sydney based artist, Lina Kay has a rare condition, known as synesthesia, where her brain sees letters, numbers and music in colour.  She only realised that her bright internal world was different when she was a teenager and she asked friends what colours they see the days of the week in.

Three years ago Lina had the idea to create sculptures on canvas using fabric. She is now a sold out commissioned artist with a waiting list of up to 6 months. Her most popular piece is different versions of River Rose. Lina prefers to create white pieces as it calms her colourful mind.

Lina says: “I didn’t want to just create sculptures using clay, I wanted to push the boundaries and break the traditions of art. I wanted to see where my creativity could take me. So through years of experimenting I found a way to create free standing sculptures and wall sculptures using fabric that will last a lifetime. This process was not an easy one for me. It required patience and discipline on another level, but once I knew that it’s what I truly wanted to do there was no stopping me or telling me that it’s impossible. Today, my sculptures are adored by collectors all over the world, and I am represented by the prestigious Art2Muse gallery.”

“I am also a sold out commissioned artist with a waiting list of up to 6 months. Every piece tells its own story, has its own personality and is on its own journey. I often say that being an artist is like being a surrogate mother. You create the art pieces and provide for them a temporary home, but ultimately they’re not yours. They don’t belong to you, they belong to someone else. ”

Lina’s ideas come to her in her sleep or when she communicates with the canvas and listens to her intuition. She does not sketch or have preconceived ideas with regards to her artistic creations.

Lina concludes: “Creating art helps me connect with the outside world with visuals instead of words. In many ways connecting through art is being a lot more vulnerable because you’re opening yourself up to judgements, but somehow it’s less painful for me. I get to communicate in a language that I am fluent in while at the same time create art pieces for collectors that love and appreciate my works. It’s extremely rewarding in that sense. “

me n ü: Crafting Raw, Emotional Dance Music

by the partae July 2, 2024
written by the partae

Can you tell us more about your journey into music production during the COVID-19 pandemic and how it shaped your sound?

Before the pandemic, we had always wondered about producing but had never taken the leap. It was a time when we were unsure of our future as we were graduating high school and deciding what to do next. When the world stopped, we thought we’d have a few weeks to learn about production and be creative. We quickly fell in love with producing and realized that it would be a huge part of our identity as artists for years to come.

What challenges did you face while transitioning to dance music, and how did you overcome them?

Transitioning to a new genre can sound challenging, but for us it was exciting. We had so much fun learning new things, listening to new sounds, becoming beginners again. There’s always the learning curve that’s challenging, and the questions surrounding our identity in a new genre, but that was a welcome struggle for us! In our minds, struggling means growing, and growing is a good thing 🙂

Your debut single “JUMP” has been incredibly successful. What was the inspiration behind this track?

Thank you! To be honest, nobody’s more surprised than us. We made “JUMP” because we couldn’t find the perfect house song that felt like sunset, summer, and hope. We were also going through a transitional period in our lives- we had always wanted to make dance music and DJ, but had never had the courage to do it. We really related to the message, as it was what we needed to hear. Making “JUMP” inspired us to release it!

How did you come up with the term “hope house” to describe your music style, and what does it mean to you?

Hope house was just something that fell out of our mouths during a phone call- what a happy accident! We were trying to explain how the way our music makes us feel is the defining element to it. This music came out of a dark time for us, and the raw emotion that we poured into is what we think defines it.

Can you describe the creative process behind “JUMP” and how you achieved the sound that “sums up” hope house?

The finished product of “JUMP” is very close to its original demo. The piano chords came first, and they came out of nowhere. Once we played those, the idea was to create a song around them- whatever that song would be. We relied completely on instinct, as we are new to making dance music. Because of that, we had no expectations of how it should sound, and we let the art exist without judgment. That is the sound of hope house- raw emotions, not trying to be anything other than what it is.

What role has social media played in your rapid rise, and how do you engage with your growing fanbase?

Social media is 100% what we attribute to our rise. We’ve been so lucky to have amazing opportunities thanks to how incredible the EDM community is. JUMP has been played on Sirius XM and playlisted— all “fancy” and “legitimate” accomplishments, and we are grateful. However, those opportunities only came because real fans, real reactions, and real people choose to stream our song every day. That’s from social media. With every amazing opportunity we’ve had, nothing has moved the needle more than the social reaction and support of JUMP. Creating amazing art, content, and relationships with our audience is the single most important thing for us, after creating great music.

With over 100,000 creations on Instagram Reels using “JUMP,” what do you think it is about the track that resonates so widely with listeners?

That’s a great question. If we knew the answer, we’d be millionaires by now! We think that because we were so vulnerable with our story, we were able to reach a lot of people who related to our struggles. We were able to create something that resonated with others like it resonated with us. But really, there was probably some lighting in a bottle and we hope to keep capturing it. We’ll put a lighting tower on top of our studio! Maybe some tinfoil will work the same.

Can you talk about the editorial support you’ve received from major streaming platforms and how it has impacted your career?

We’ve been so lucky to receive a lot of editorial support from major streaming platforms, particularly on our second single. It’s a great talking point and it’s so fun to see our songs next to artists we’re fans of. To be honest, we don’t know how it has impacted our career. Maybe that’s a “wait and see” kind of thing.

What are your thoughts on the importance of female representation in the electronic music scene, and how do you see your role within it?

Before we made dance music, we were one of 2.8% of female producers in the industry. This has been something we’ve dealt with for years. There are a lot of female fans in the EDM genre, and we would love to cater to them. We want to get something straight- we LOVE men. Men have been so supportive of us, men have made amazing music that we look up to, and men have given us many opportunities. But so have women!!! We definitely feel a responsibility to represent them well, to be there for them, to cater to them. We especially want to show young girls that they can be anything they want in this world, a lesson we learned from the trailblazers before us. It’s an ongoing priority for us to continue to support the AMAZING female DJs and producers we encounter. They’re huge role models for us.

How do you balance the technical aspects of music production with the emotive elements that define hope house?

This is another great question! We used to be more technical, which made sense because we’ve only been producing for a few years. But about a year ago- something hit us: why do certain songs connect and others don’t? They’re all produced well. In fact, some that are produced worse do better. So is it all about production? Our answer is no. Once we started focusing on how things made us FEEL over whether they were “right or wrong”, we started making our best music. We really believe in that philosophy. The good thing is that we’re still new enough where we don’t have any real bad habits. We also never worried about having the fanciest equipment. It was all about what we could do with our software, not what our software can do for us! So, this was an easy and enjoyable mindset change!

What are some future projects or collaborations that fans can look forward to from me n ü?

There will be a couple of great announcements soon in the remix space! Meantime, we’re constantly releasing new mashups and remixes on SoundCloud, we’re starting to play festivals, and of course, new original music is always coming.

What advice would you give to aspiring musicians, especially women, who are looking to break into the dance music scene?

Do it and don’t think about it! Don’t look back, don’t worry. It’s supposed to be hard because it matters. Things that matter don’t come easy. Hate to quote our own song, but if the shoe fits…. “You gotta just go for it. Don’t think about what comes before or what comes after. You just gotta bend your knees, take a deep breath, and jump”.

Christine Tarquinio Embraces Hope with “New Year’s Day” Release

by the partae July 2, 2024
written by the partae

Independent pop artist, singing teacher and dedicated mother, Christine Tarquinio is delighted to announce the release of her latest single, “New Year’s Day,” available on all major streaming platforms.

With her honest and meaningful lyrics paired with catchy melodies, Christine Tarquinio has long been an acknowledged name in the Melbourne music scene, and alongside production alchemist, Daniel Nieberg who produced, mixed, and mastered “New Year’s Day”, the track is set to excite her fans. The enthusiasm and reflection that come with the new year and its distinctive qualities are perfectly captured in the song.

Christine beautifully conveys the sense of hope and expectation that permeates everyone’s New Year’s Resolutions. After a brief period of returning to our regular routines, realisation dawns. Nevertheless, the song keeps growing, much like Christine’s life has been over the past few months as a series of profound events have occurred one after another.

“I wrote ‘New Year’s Day’ at the beginning of this year, feeling like nothing had changed despite the new calendar. But as the months have gone on, I’ve had moments that have truly altered how I appreciate life’s little things. This song reflects both the hope and the reality that new year’s bring.” Christine Tarquinio

Christine Tarquinio has brought this song to life in every note while drawing from her own passion and enthusiasm. She finds her inspiration in a rawness characterised by Natalie Imbruglia, Gwen Stefani, and Jewel, and is channelling from her own everyday experiences of being a mum and a wife. She describes her music as honest, open, and new since Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, Billie Eilish, and Lana Del Rey. Additionally, there is a ring of love and genuineness to the music.

As a seasoned artist, Christine keeps surprising her fans with her adaptable versatility with each new release. Her tendency towards collaboration keeps her music fresh and interesting. Her release history demonstrates her adaptability, as evidenced by the latest two releases, which received over 7,000 streams.

Besides music, Christine loves to teach singing to students and coaches her young daughter’s soccer team. Her young son’s musicality sees her encouraging him to be in school productions. Her goals for 2024 and beyond not only include more single releases and diverse soundscapes but also to keep her independent as a musician. She will, however, look forward to sharing her music with the world in enthusiastic celebration of nearly 10 years since her first release and excitedly looking to begin her second decade in music.

Save the Date: 21st July 2024 – “New Year’s Day” about new beginnings and life’s winding roads.

SCATTER LIGHT explore modern romance on infectious psych-pop single  ‘DREAM ABOUT YOU’

Eora/Sydney up-and-comers Scatter Light have returned with their latest groove-filled, psych-pop single titled ‘Dream About You’, which is out today along with the announcement of a 6 date East Coast tour.

Recorded at The Grove Studios, with mixing from Jack Garzonio (Cosmo’s Midnight, Brockhampton, Clews) and mastering from Steve Smart (Vance Joy, The Buoys, Tash Sultana) at Studio 301, ‘Dream About You’ builds consistently throughout its runtime, layering harmonies and melodies effortlessly across an incredibly catchy, persistent vocal melody. The dynamic rhythmic foundation set by the bass and drums keeps the track pulsing along, laying down the perfect backdrop for some dreamy 70s Soft Rock inspired guitars. Sonically, the track could be likened to the work of MGMT, Parcels and Tame Impala.

The themes found on ‘Dream About You’ revolve around modern romance, and the mental barriers that often come along with a fresh relationship.

“Dream About You explores the murkiness of modern relationships, whether being in one or desiring a new one, with the unsaid and speculated often becoming more of our perceived reality than what’s been spoken out loud. ” SCATTER LIGHT

The Sydney-siders have continued to establish themselves within the local indie scene over the past few years, since the bands debut self-titled EP back in 2021. On the live circuit, the band have supported the likes of The Smith Street Band, Rum Jungle, The Rions, Crocodylus and The Moving Stills and more – and have seen extensive local radio overage, with a full rotation spot for their past single ‘Too Late Now’ on 2SER, and multiple spins through local tastemakers FBi.

The bands ever-growing fan base will be able to hear ‘Dream About You’ on their upcoming tour run, with headline shows booked for Sydney, Newcastle, Brisbane, Melbourne and Wollongong.

“The psychedelic harmonies, similar to the likings of MGMT and electrically explosive Black Sabbath-like guitar solos, seems to blend with utter ease. Scatter Light have completely solidified their rightful place in the Australian music renaissance.” (‘Leave Some Room Inside Your Mind’, 2021)

HAPPY MAG

“Scatter Light has got you covered with their new track ‘Too Late Now’. They’re a power trio that blends an array of 60s and 70s rock n roll influences with elements of modern psychedelia (think Tame Impala meets Psychedelic Porn Crumpets)”

DAYA Releases New Pop-Electronic Single “Don’t Call”

GRAMMY-winning Artist DAYA Releases Lyrically Powerful Pop-Electronic Crossover Single “Don’t Call” On Spinnin’ Records/Warner Music

Artist: DAYA
Title: Don’t Call
Label: Spinnin’ Records/Warner Music

Download / Stream

GRAMMY-winning artist DAYA returns with her new single “Don’t Call,” an emotive pop ballad that also finds the young superstar experimenting across genres with electronic production elements. From a vocal perspective, DAYA‘s soulful and ethereal voice shines as she croons the heartfelt (and highly relatable) lyrics about trying your best to get over someone, and the instrumental elements begin with soft, organic chords and grow into a light drum’n’bass influence during the track’s most powerful moments. The American songstress coupled the release of “Don’t Call” with a listening party in Los Angeles on June 27th, the day before its official release. Don’t miss the chance to be among the first to hear “Don’t Call,” which is guaranteed to be receiving heavy radio play this summer.

“‘Don’t Call‘ has had this magical pull ever since we created it and I’m so excited for it to be out. It feels like a song I’ve always wanted to put into the world and a big emotional release for me; I hope people will feel that in the music.” – DAYA

DAYA

A Pittsburgh native with a passion for music since childhood, Daya practically lived on stage since childhood, wielding her songwriting talent from a young age. Her self-penned, synth-pop anthem “Hide Away” became a double-platinum hit before she turned 20, even earning her a GRAMMY. Collaborating with The Chainsmokers on the global smash “Don’t Let Me Down” solidified her pop stardom, with the track reaching #3 on the Hot 100 chart. Despite major-label success, Daya craved creative control. Releasing critically acclaimed EPs, she showcased her evolving sound – a blend of pop, R&B, and electronic influences. This artistic journey reflects a yearning to reclaim her teenage years, which she missed due to early career demands. Now, she infuses her music with youthful exploration, venturing into folk, pop-punk, and alternative. A prolific collaborator, DAYA seamlessly blends genres, as seen in her Top 40 Canadian hit “Love You More” with Felix Cartal. Daya‘s infectious energy extends beyond the studio. She’s captivated audiences with performances on The Today Show, Good Morning America, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and The Late Late Show with James Corden, among others.  With a strong social media presence boasting over 3,8M followers and a dedicated fanbase heavily skewed towards Gen Z and the LGBTQ+ community, DAYA‘s music continues to resonate with a global audience.
