AUSTRALIAN RAP DUO, PISTOL PETE & ENZO, RETURN STRONGER THAN EVER WITH NEW SINGLE ‘THE TOP’

by the partae July 12, 2020
written by the partae

Biordi Music is proud to present Pistol Pete & Enzo’s first new release under their label ‘The Top’. The new single, which goes by the same title – ‘The Top’ – is out now and is the beginning of a new journey for the Australian rap duo, who have returned harder and stronger than ever.

Pistol Pete & Enzo are well known within the industry for their raw and lyrical bars and ‘The Top’ remains true to their style while also showcasing a more diversified version of themselves. Through the new single it is evident that one of their greatest strengths in the Rap Game is the use of word play. From one-liner puns such as “Put ‘em on the board cause they’re never gonna notice (know this)” to references from renown Disney movies, “if they’re lying (lion) about the king then they can get scarred,” the duo have no trouble piecing together sophisticated and unique lyrics. ‘The Top’ delivers a strong message of resilience and perseverance, an insight to their life and come-up as they make a significant return to the scene.

Pistol Pete & Enzo say, “’The Top’ is a track that showcases our versatilities in the current Australian rap game. Being in this game for some time now we’ve copped lot of love but also a lot of hate. In this track we are stating that ‘The Top’ is where we are heading regardless. This track is uplifting and has a feel-good vibe, but at the same time we stay true to our ways and we still talk our talk. ‘The Top’ is just the start of our new journey and in due time we will be there!”

‘The Top’ is released through Biordi Music, written by Pistol Pete & Enzo and produced by RELYT.

Multidisciplinary Geelong-based folk artist Momoko Rose announces single release for introspective art piece, 'Humans Weep', a product of the $10,000 Emerging Artist Grant awarded to the Rose in 2019 for Queenscliff Music Festival. An artist unafraid to explore wounded subjects and raw emotions, Rose navigates current family trauma and the uneasy revelations that are uncovered from past estranged maternal circumstances. Through assessment and acceptance of her childhood and unfortunate household breakdown resulting in financial hardship, Rose birthed 'Humans Weeps', a web of misery built by social constructs and existential conflict.    "'Humans Weep' is written from the perspective of being overwhelmed with life to the point of apathy. The simple opening lyric "Duller than a bad dream, not even tragic like a movie scene" sums up how sometimes life can deal you a bad hand that you can't even extract any drama or poetry from, it just leaves you raw," Rose explains.   "I wrote this song in what was the aftermath of an extremely overwhelming family conflict, which caused a complete paradigm shift in my outlook on life. It was a surreal feeling because even though I had clarity and felt better than I had about myself since I was born, I also truly thought that I could not feel or lose any more than I already had at the time. It's pretty devastating for anyone to realise that while their childhood obviously had issues (which is normal) it was still not as great as we thought or would have liked it to be. These realisations and sense of loss from everything happening left me breaking down into tears most days, then every week and then every so often until I could regain a sense of stability. If not for my partner and close friends, I don't know if I would have made it through this trying time. Braving this has given me a newfound confidence and I now accept what has happened to me without regretting the decisions I have made along the way.  While 'Humans Weep' may not specifically be about these events, it was definitely birthed from them and their context which marks a pivotal point in my life." Written in 2018 and recorded late last year in the home studio of Isaac Barter (Didirri, BATTS) with her permanent band, Rose explores a new sonicscape, aesthetically trying to capture dawn/dusk as a landscape through sound with warm mellow guitars contrasting cold violins, still cricket sound grabs and intimate melodies. "Sonically, this was a pretty new direction for me. From the beginning, I wanted to convey a sense of monotony in the song due to its themes of apathy towards life. I tried to do this by only moving between two (sometimes three) chords for the majority of the song through the verses and with these specific chords the only change between them is one note moving by a semitone," Rose says.  "This was a purposeful choice which was honestly pretty restraining for me as I normally try to embellish songs with chord/key/rhythm changes, so to keep it interesting was a challenge. However, this lets the lyrics shine through which I believe are the strongest part of the song. Overall, the sonic vision for this song is an audible departure from the acoustic nature and intensity on my debut EP." Humans Weep will be available for streaming on all major platforms and will likely be on an upcoming EP titled "Anticlimactic Girl" set for release in 2021

Adelaide's JOSH KROEHN makes his mark with the revealing new single, 'NEVER FOUND'

Adelaide’s JOSH KROEHN makes his mark with the revealing new single, ‘NEVER FOUND’

by the partae July 12, 2020
written by the partae

Adelaide indie songwriter Josh Kroehn is marking his first release for 2020 in the striking ‘Never Found’. Letting his natural tone and lyrics take prominence, the acoustic driven song is an evocative release from the young artist, who is continuing to define his creative identity on record.

With influences ranging from Ben Howard to City and Colour and Bon Iver, it is clear that Josh Kroehn holds particular focus when it comes to articulating his songwriting in an especially emotional way. Previous releases have praised Kroehn for his musicality as a guitarist and depth as a songwriter, while ‘Never Found’ is showing maturity in his output.

Recorded at Island Studios in Adelaide, ‘Never Found’ came together at the end of last year, documenting personal change and realisation. Releasing this music in a period of lockdown and forced self-reflection, Kroehn acknowledges the significance of the song to him now. “I’ve found that the more I stay true to myself, the less involved I feel in certain relationships and friendships. I feel like in the past, I’ve tried becoming something I’m not in order to keep people happy, which I don’t want to do anymore as it took its toll on my own happiness.” Josh Kroehn

‘Never Found’ is one of the songs that Kroehn has incorporated into what will become his debut album, which is starting to take its final form. Until then, Kroehn is using this opportunity to introduce himself to more listeners and preparing for post lockdown music and touring opportunities. Along with the release of his new single, a music video for ‘Never Found’ accompanies. “The music video was directed, filmed and edited by myself. It tries to tell the story of how times have changed and I am a different person now, who perhaps was never a different person at all, but rather was led by a desire for acceptance.” Josh Kroehn

PRAISE FOR JOSH KROEHN

“His artistry is truly one of a kind and you can’t find another Josh Kroehn anywhere else”
Buzz Music

“The Adelaide based musician crafts rich, textured rock tunes that stretch out far beyond any particular genre…”

Sydney indie rock group MARVELL return with new single, '19 HOMES'

Sydney indie rock group Marvell return with new single, ‘19 Homes’

by the partae July 11, 2020
written by the partae

Diving straight into the strong and driving rock influences, Sydney’s Marvell are back with another bright single for 2020 in ‘19 Homes’. The track comes at a turning point for the group, as they anticipate a brand new chapter for the band looking ahead at new music.

For fans of bands including Kings of Leon, Foo Fighters or Boy and Bear, Marvell have distilled a charming, rogue-ish energy into the new single, making ‘19 Homes’ an immensely fun track to sink one’s teeth into. A familiar sound for those schooled up on the five-piece’s raucous style, ‘19 Homes’ is also a perfect introduction for any newcomers to the Marvell fold.

Recorded with award-winning producer and composer Jan Skubiszewski (John Butler, Dan Sultan) out at Red Moon Studios in the Macedon Ranges, ‘19 Homes’ is a result of sessions spent refining and continuing to define the sonic identity of the band. Off the back of March’s ‘Brainwash’ release, and with more music still in the wings, ‘19 Homes’ provides a great snapshot of where the band is now.

Pouring a love of classic songwriting in with fresh and contemporary indie-rock influences, Marvell’s music is grounded in melody and emotional storytelling. Between brothers Max and Tom Marvell’s distinctive vocals and a rhythm section that is relentless in its energy, Marvell is coming through stronger than ever as the music community continues to rebuild and take steps back into the spotlight, as lockdown restrictions ease.

The band worked with director Tom Muir and producer Daniel Pollock in bringing the music video for ‘19 Homes’ together – taking the idea of an open house and turning it on its head, flourishing into a fun, house party setting instead. Yearning for the time where we can do it again in real time, the video serves as a little substitute for what is on the horizon.

PRAISE FOR MARVELL

“This one is passionate and has me thinking of Stereophonics. A big sound from Marvell.”
Triple J, Declan Byrne

“They definitely left some debris in the Canberra music scene and it left us wanting more!”

Tremorverse Records bring together music students with compilation album ‘Songs From Home’ featuring Trad Ukiyo & Eve. and more!

by the partae July 11, 2020
written by the partae

Back in April, local label Tremorverse Records put the call out for music students across the globe to take part in an isolation curation of sorts, for a chance to be featured on their compilation album Songs From Home. Created in collaboration with Melbourne’s Box Hill Institute, Songs From Home brings together emerging artists from Music Institutions throughout the world to share songs created in response to the unprecedented times we’ve found ourselves living in.

Music students responded and we are proud to release an 11-track album, traversing everything from neo-soul to alt-folk, and electronica to ambience. With songs to soundtrack either the deepest of meditations or the loudest of house parties, Songs From Home presents a powerful snapshot of the immense creativity of our extended music community, with something for everyone surely to be found in its tracklist.

TREMORVERSE COMPILATION SONGS FROM HOME
TRACKLISTING

1. ‘On Hold’ – Trad Ukiyo
2. ‘Modern Logic’ – Eve.
3. ‘Lately’ – ReWire
4.  ‘Tremor2020’ – Hack
5. ‘Heat’ – Icy, The Freeze
6. ‘No Face’ – No Face
7. ‘AM Meditations’ – Jameson Clarke
8.  ‘Alpine Camp’ – The Nice Age

9. ‘A Song Of Songs’ – Jödanr
10. ‘Lord I Believe In You’ – Tony Thomas

The compilation’s focus tracks feature songs and first releases from some artists including ‘On Hold’ by Melbourne neo-soul four-piece Trad Ukiyo, the lo-fi RnB mantra of ‘Modern Logic’ by Eve., the dreamy self-titled sounds of No Face, plus Hack’s dancefloor filler ‘Tremor2020’, and ReWire’s Stevie Wonder cover of ‘Lately’. The album obliterates genre boundaries by exploring the many multimodal soundscapes that music students have to offer.

“We are honoured to be apart of ‘Songs From Home’ — a wonderful initiative bringing creatives together, during what has been nothing short of an eventful 2020.

‘On Hold’ represents a journey of self reflection and solace. It could be a time, place, person; be what it may, we hope it serves as a vessel for inner peace and resilience. Thank you again to Tremorverse Records for this opportunity.”
– Gabrielle, Adriano, Brandon and Fergus (Trad Ukiyo)

Songs From Home is available to stream via AWAL from Friday 10 July, with all funds raised from the compilation going directly to the students involved, giving these emerging acts a leg-up through this time of great difficulty. So head to Tremorverse Records’ Bandcamp page and be sure to snag yourself a copy!

THE LEMON TWIGS Release new single ‘Live In Favor Of Tomorrow’ Songs For The General Public out Friday 21 August

by the partae July 11, 2020
written by the partae

The Lemon Twigs have done it again with another shot of adrenaline straight into the vein of the American pop scene. ‘Live In Favor Of Tomorrow’ is a euphoric dance in the clouds which brings you close enough to God to slap him five. Time is an antiquated illusion when you play this puppy loud. Judy Garland twerks on Galileo to the sound of jangly guitars and drumming we haven’t heard since Jerry Lewis jammed with Lars Ulrich at Woodstock 2069. Every-day horror is a day at the beach in the land of the infinite. Is that a mushroom cloud, or the Buddha doing a cannonball at his holy summer pool party? These are the kinds of thoughts likely to ripple through your mind during the song’s relentless 3 minutes and 24 seconds. So take your shirt off and take a dive into infinity with The chosen Lemon Twigs.

The D’Addario brothers wrote, recorded and produced the forthcoming album entirely on tape at their Long Island home studio, Sonora Studios in Los Angeles, and Electric Lady in New York City. ‘Live In Favor Of Tomorrow’ is preceded by “excellent” (Flood) lead single ‘The One‘ and “thrilling” (NME) sax-driven single ‘Moon.’ Songs For The General Public is out August 21 on 4AD / Remote Control.

The prodigiously-talented duo first emerged as The Lemon Twigs in 2016 with their debut LP Do Hollywood, whose show-stopping melodies mined from every era of rock quickly earned fans in Elton John, Questlove, and Jack Antonoff. Go To School, the ambitious 15-track coming-of-age opus, followed in 2018 and solidified the band’s reputation for building grand walls of sound around an audacious concept.

The 12-track album will be released on August 21 digitally and on CD, limited translucent red vinyl (only available via indie stores and the 4AD Store) and standard black vinyl. Pre-order here: thelemontwigs.ffm.to/songsforthegeneralpublic

DMA’S release new album THE GLOW and share new single ‘Criminals’ Due to unprecedented pre-sale demand – six new & final shows added, 18 dates in total! Tix on sale today at noon The band appeared on The Project last night - watch here DMA’S will hold a virtual album listening party with fans tonight at 9.30pm AEST via their Facebook & YouTube DMA’S Live – THE GLOW special airing at 3pm on Channel 9 tomorrow (Sat 11th July) Today it is with great excitement that I OH YOU present DMA’S highly anticipated third studio album, THE GLOW, with a spotlight on the band’s new single ‘Criminals’. Recorded and mixed by multi-Grammy Award winning producer Stuart Price (The Killers, New Order, Madonna) at the historic Westlake Recording Studios in Hollywood, THE GLOW is a step up for the band in every sense. With two top #10 ARIA albums, 4x ARIA-nominations, and multiple ARIA Platinum and ARIA Gold singles already under their belt, THE GLOW marks a leap forward for DMA’S that is bigger, bolder and brighter than ever, and shows just how far they’ve come.  DMA’S 2016 debut album Hill’s End was recorded in guitarist Johnny Took’s rundown Newtown apartment, where they would start the day by flipping a mattress up against the wall in an attempt to block out the traffic noise from a nearby highway. This time, working with one of the world’s most renowned producers (in a studio once frequented by Quincy Jones) the band were able to take their song writing to the next level, resulting in an anthemic pop record that sees the band fulfil their world-class potential with a collection of songs destined for arenas. From the New Order meets Pet Shop Boys dance vibes of ‘Life Is A Game Of Changing’ to the heartfelt, Lennon-esque ‘Learning Alive’, THE GLOW is a collection of fresh, impassioned songs that push the boundaries of what DMA’S “are” while proving their unwavering ability to write sensational and timeless songs. THE GLOW’s huge first single ‘Silver’ debuted into the world in late 2019 and has become DMA’S fastest streaming song to date (with over 8.5 million streams in the space of a few months). Quickly championed by fans across the country, ‘Silver’ was voted #20 in triple j’s Hottest 100 of 2019 (their 6th consecutive year in the countdown). Follow-up single ‘Life Is A Game Of Changing’ took the band to another level, premiering on the UK’s BBC Radio 1 and landing ‘Record Of The Week’ on the UK’s Radio X, later receiving official remixes from dance royalty Orbital, Melbourne producer Willaris. K and Martin Buttrich. The album’s title track ‘The Glow’ was added to Daytime Playlist at Radio X, and latest single ‘Criminals’ which premiered via Richard Kingsmill on triple j earlier this week, is proving to be one of the biggest pop moments on the record.   “This song is my favourite off the record, I love the way it turned out and we had a lot of fun recording it.” - Tommy O’Dell THE GLOW has seen plenty of early support from the likes of The Sun (UK), Dork, Q Magazine (4 stars), Uncut (7/10), Clash (8/10), NME AU, Rolling Stone AU and Consequence of Sound. This week has been a huge release week for the band, seeing them appear on The Project, The Today Show, Triple M Hot Breakfast, ABC TV and across daily newspapers, with much more to come! 8/10 “One of the most riotous new live bands, DMA’S have managed to bring that energy to the studio and fully deserve to bask in the glow of their success.”  - Long Live Vinyl “An album evenly weighted with dance elements and full-blown pop excitement.” - The AU Review 4/5 “Amid another hatful of huge choruses, this third LP delves deeper into the deft shoegaze-y texturing of synths and guitars the trio started on 2018’s For Now.” - Q Magazine 8/10 “Stimulating and surprising, it is a remarkable result that allows guitars to count as much as the inclusion of digital beats and sequencers, and one where pop sensibility is as essential as exploration.” - Clash   8.5/10 "The Glow isn’t just another album in the band’s discography. It sounds like a coming of age, an album that is limitless in its imagination and one that defies genre limitations..The Glow combines different musical styles that showcases the Australian trio at their very best." - The Line Of Best Fit 4/5 "Every moment of ‘The Glow’ sees the band step up...It’s not just the music that’s on another level: lyrically, ‘The Glow’ sees DMA’s at their most vulnerable, most excitable and most inspiring...‘The Glow’ is a hyper-charged record of dance and decadence. A bold step forward that sees DMA’s coming into their own." - NME To celebrate the release of THE GLOW, this week DMA’S announced an intimate run of stripped-back shows at Sydney’s Factory Theatre in July/Aug. Due to unprecedented pre-sale demand for the first 12 dates revealed, last night the band added an additional and final six shows. In line with updated regulations around live entertainment, the band will be playing to limited capacity crowds, with the multiple shows giving more fans a chance to be some of the first in the world to hear their new material live for the very first time. Tickets go on sale today at noon, head to frontiertouring.com/DMAS for tickets. Having performed a sold out show at London’s iconic 5,000 capacity O2 Academy Brixton before the world went into lockdown, these new dates are DMA’S first gigs in many months, with local fans scoring the chance to be the very first in the world to witness the band’s latest material live on stage. Those eager to remember the joy of DMA'S live can tune into Channel 9 this Saturday (Jul 11) for a very special screening; 'DMA'S Live - THE GLOW' at 3:00PM AEST. From bedroom recordings and Sydney pubs to standing shoulder-to-shoulder with some of the biggest names in music, THE GLOW is a record about embracing change and taking risks. Every achievement is the result of DMA’S unwavering dedication to their craft. THE GLOW sees the band expand the limits of their production style and use of texture and sound, while still retaining the integrity of who they are as writers. And boy, has the risk paid off. Tune into DMA'S Facebook and YouTube tonight at 9.30pm AEST to join Tommy, Johnny and Mason for a virtual listening party, as they live stream THE GLOW in full for the first time and take questions from fans throughout.

“This song is my favourite off the record, I love the way it turned out and we had a lot of fun recording it.” – Tommy O’Dell
THE GLOW has seen plenty of early support from the likes of The Sun (UK), Dork, Q Magazine (4 stars), Uncut (7/10), Clash (8/10), NME AU, Rolling Stone AU and Consequence of Sound. This week has been a huge release week for the band, seeing them appear on The Project, The Today Show, Triple M Hot Breakfast, ABC TV and across daily newspapers, with much more to come!
8/10 “One of the most riotous new live bands, DMA’S have managed to bring that energy to the studio and fully deserve to bask in the glow of their success.”
– Long Live Vinyl

“An album evenly weighted with dance elements and full-blown pop excitement.”
– The AU Review

4/5 “Amid another hatful of huge choruses, this third LP delves deeper into the deft shoegaze-y texturing of synths and guitars the trio started on 2018’s For Now.”
– Q Magazine

8/10 “Stimulating and surprising, it is a remarkable result that allows guitars to count as much as the inclusion of digital beats and sequencers, and one where pop sensibility is as essential as exploration.” – Clash

8.5/10 “The Glow isn’t just another album in the band’s discography. It sounds like a coming of age, an album that is limitless in its imagination and one that defies genre limitations..The Glow combines different musical styles that showcases the Australian trio at their very best.”
 – The Line Of Best Fit

4/5 “Every moment of ‘The Glow’ sees the band step up…It’s not just the music that’s on another level: lyrically, ‘The Glow’ sees DMA’s at their most vulnerable, most excitable and most inspiring…‘The Glow’ is a hyper-charged record of dance and decadence. A bold step forward that sees DMA’s coming into their own.” – NME

To celebrate the release of THE GLOW, this week DMA’S announced an intimate run of stripped-back shows at Sydney’s Factory Theatre in July/Aug.

Those eager to remember the joy of DMA’S live can tune into Channel 9 this Saturday (Jul 11) for a very special screening; ‘DMA’S Live – THE GLOW’ at 3:00PM AEST.

Tune into DMA’S Facebook and YouTube tonight at 9.30pm AEST to join Tommy, Johnny and Mason for a virtual listening party, as they live stream THE GLOW in full for the first time and take questions from fans throughout.

BLACK RABBIT GEORGE UNVEILS HYPNOTIC NEW SINGLE ‘FINGERS RADIO’ AND ANNOUNCES ALBUM RELEASE DATE

by the partae July 11, 2020
written by the partae

QLD Gold Coast-based artist Black Rabbit George has just revealed the release date for his new album ‘Warren’ (due August 28) and his mesmerising new single ‘Fingers Radio’ – produced and mixed by the artist himself at his home studio.

‘Fingers Radio’ is a dreamy melting pot of psychedelia, folk and indie-rock. The sweeping track is driven by its steadfast rhythmic section, deft guitar work and ethereal vocal melodies that hover elegantly above. Unwavering from start to finish, ‘Fingers Radio’ never loses its momentum and immerses the listener into a pensive dream like state.

The Black Rabbit describes the motivation behind ‘Fingers Radio’:

“I spent a lot of time isolated at home toying with ideas I’ve had over the years. I’ve pretty much lived in the studio for the last 6 months, just toying with where I can take the things I’ve learnt and how they all make sense together. ‘Fingers Radio’ is one of the songs that came from these sessions.”

Black Rabbit George is a new incarnation for Tijuana Cartel’s guitarist/singer/songwriter Paul George. It’s an opportunity for Paul to further explore the acoustic guitar that is at the heart of Tijuana Cartel and to pursue his long-time interest in folk and roots music.

“Tijuana Cartel remains a core driving force in my life and I’d never want to leave it behind,” explains the Black Rabbit. “But at the same time, I want to follow a path that embraces the great loves in my life: my guitar and the wealth of stories that life simply places in your way.”

Black Rabbit George’s previous releases have been strongly supported by the likes of triple j, Double J, FBi Radio, PBS FM, 4ZZZ, RTR FM, Radio Adelaide, Bay FM and online blogs. He’s toured the country extensively multiple times and earned himself a small, but cult like following that come out in droves when he’s performing.

‘Fingers Radio’ is available worldwide now

TENSNAKE DELIVERS FOURTH SINGLE OF FORTHCOMING ‘L.A.’ ALBUM: ‘STRANGE WITHOUT YOU’ (FEAT. DARAMOLA)

TENSNAKE DELIVERS FOURTH SINGLE OF FORTHCOMING ‘L.A.’ ALBUM: ‘STRANGE WITHOUT YOU’ (FEAT. DARAMOLA)

by the partae July 11, 2020
written by the partae

As the release of his ‘L.A.’ album continues to draw closer, Tensnake is keeping his fans on the edge of their seats with yet another extraordinary record. The fourth album single to see its release after ‘Rules’, ‘Automatic’ and ‘Somebody Else’, ‘Strange Without You’ (feat. Daramola) sees the German studio magician touch down on leading dance music label Armada Music with one of his most personal records yet.

Only adding to the sheer diversity of his ‘L.A.’ album, Tensnake’s ‘Strange Without You’ is as musically magnificent as you can expect from its creator. With lush background pads, sounds that harken back to his early hit ‘Coma Cat’ and radiant, relatable vocals from Daramola working wonders in tandem with the beefed-up beats, this multifaceted record is tailored to deliver the best possible dance floor experience at any time or place.

‘Strange Without You’ is a very personal song for me. I wrote it after a breakup and the idea was to combine into one song the excitement of beginning a new relationship and the strange emotional state you often find yourself in after a breakup. Daramola captured the vibe perfectly and translated it into a bittersweet love song you can also dance to.” Tensnake

Daramola, the Nigerian, Miami-based singer, songwriter and music producer who charted on Billboard several times and produced for multiple artists including Grammy award-winning rapper Lecrae, added:

“Tensnake sent me the record and I immediately knew where to take it. His music resonated with my sound and my vibe; everything came so naturally.”

After getting his first taste of critical acclaim in 2009 with his ‘In The End (I Want You To Cry)’ EP, Tensnake has been cementing his status as a dance music pioneer every step along the way. The Hamburg-born DJ, producer and label boss secured U.K. chart success with 2010 single ‘Coma Cat’, officially remixed songs from the likes of Aloe Blacc (‘I Need A Dollar’, 2010), Lana Del Rey (‘National Anthem’, 2012), London Grammar (‘Hey Now’, 2014) and Duke Dumont (‘I Got You’, 2014), collaborated with Nile Rodgers, three-time Grammy-winner Stuart Price, Jamie Lidell, MNEK, Fiora and more for his debut album ‘Glow’ in 2014, and snatched up over 70 million streams on Spotify to date. And now with a brand-new artist album in the pipeline, Tensnake is taking all the right steps to ensure that this year will be his best one yet.

Daddy’s Groove serve up another slammer for Heldeep Records on ‘Everyone’ Out now via Heldeep Records

by the partae July 11, 2020
written by the partae

Daddy’s Groove are keeping the music coming through thick and thin, bringing some serious heat with the release of ‘Everyone’ on Heldeep Records, following in the footsteps of their previous smashes on Oliver Heldens’ label like ‘Addicted To Drums’ and ‘Been A Long Time’.

‘Everyone’ wastes no time in getting down to business, with a filtered snare roll build and meaty claps surrounding a commanding vocal sample taken from the legendary queer and trans ballroom scene of New York that has influenced many producers, artists and fashion designers over the years. We’re then slammed hard into an undulating bass groove which is punctuated by big tribal drum hits, pitched and reverberated in intense fashion. The sassy vocal drives the track forward with its dance move instructions, and the intense build-up midway through the track brings a warped synth into play that also recalls more classic New York vibes – the sound of ‘90s tribal house. It’s a chunky, hard-edged track that will pulverise any dancefloor.

Currently sitting at #92 in the DJ Mag Top 100 DJs, the Italian duo have co-produced and remixed the likes of Axwell, Lady Gaga, Sia, Bruno Mars, Usher, David Guetta, Nicki Minaj and Sean Paul. They have scored several Beatport Top 10 hits, and it sounds like plenty more are on the way.

‘Everyone’ is out now on Heldeep Records!

About Heldeep Records:

International superstar Oliver Heldens founded Heldeep Records to create a platform to showcase the new music of budding producers after receiving 1000s of demos. Since 2014, Heldeep Records has grown from a modest imprint into a fully-fledged label, featuring respected mainstay acts like ALOK, Chocolate Puma, & Dada Life as well as hosting stages at leading festivals across the globe like Tomorrowland, Mysteryland, Electric Forest, Spring Awakening Music Festival and South West Four. Heldeep artists are showcased weekly on Heldeep Radio, which is syndicated across 91 stations, in 66 countries and reaches 118 million people a week.

Sophie Castriota Interview

by the partae July 10, 2020
written by the partae

What’s been happening recently?

I’ve been keeping myself busy working on new music and doing a lot of meditation and working on self-development – especially through this Covid crisis. I’ve had to really put focus on the positives. Social media can be extremely negative and draining at times, so I’ve tried to limit my use.

Your new track ‘ü wnt me‘ is out now, what influenced the sound and song writing?

I was in a relationship a few years ago with someone high up in the music industry. I truly loved him but after a while, I could see he was more invested in his money and fame and less of being in the ‘relationship’.

Where and when did you record/produce?

I’ve actually built a studio in my house so I’m doing most of my recordings here now.

Please tell us about your life growing up and how the process comes through in your music:

I lost my dad when I was 7. It was traumatic for me because I watched him die. Going through trauma at such a young age really does shape a person.

Trauma doesn’t define me though… and realising that has taken me close to 10 years – with a lot of self-growth and therapy work.

I was bullied quite badly growing up, then because of that I felt like I needed protection, so I began hanging around the wrong people.

When I was 16 that was the start of many of my close friends dying from drug overdoses through to car accidents.

I feel like all these experiences have really changed my perception about life.

I’m closer to God more than anything now and know that life is too short to worry about small issues when we should be focused on being present and living in the moment. These experiences have given me feelings that sometimes I can’t express verbally so it’s easier to write about and heal that way.

How do you use music to express your feelings and emotions and does this process have a therapeutic affect?

For sure. Song writing is a therapy in itself. I believe that’s with anything creative though. You see pain or happiness through paintings, photography, dance etc.

I believe anything expressive can be a healing process.

How did you learn to write music and how has your song writing developed over time?

With anything, over time you become better at it. Song writing was something I kind of just fell into – it was never really my intention to write music. I grew up playing violin and classical music… producing, singing and songwriting never really crossed my mind until I went to university and met my friend Mitch (who’s the lead singer in the band Chase Atlantic). We wrote my first song ‘Gone For The Night’. That was the beginning of my song writing journey.

There are general formulas. The way I write now is singing melodies first and then putting lyrics over the melodies. Everyday I’m learning something new. Everyday I’m growing as an artist and gaining more knowledge. There’s still a lot I don’t know.

Trauma is something that you have had to face and deal with, how is the process developing for you and how does your music assist in the process?

The only way to heal is to face your trauma and actively seek out.

I follow ‘the.holistic.psychologist’ on Instagram – her posts are about consciously creating a new version of yourself with exercises to practice. Being in the present moment, being aware of your current feelings (why you do and behave in certain ways/coping mechanisms) and different strategies you can use in order to become the best version of yourself. My music is therapy – it allows me to express myself the way I’m feeling at the time. People say that if you write down what’s on your mind, it helps in managing your emotions and is good for your mental health – so song writing is essentially journaling to me.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Atm I’m listening to Lil Uzi, Night Lovell, PlayBoi Carti, DaBaby & RoddyRicch.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2020?

Writing more music. Have a few collaborations in progress too.

Hopefully next year I can look at touring again after this pandemic calms down.
