“On Future Forecast, Civic’s first LP, they’ve added sophistication to their arrangements and songwriting without losing any of the in-your-face-ness of their previous work. Great guitar sounds. This is a really good record. Civic’s entire catalog is excellent” – Henry Rollins. |

Driving and tenacious, but never losing sight of a good hook and how to use it – CIVIC don’t tip-toe around the edges, but obliterate them with primal intensity. Finding a home somewhere between 80’s glam rock and Australia’s 70’s greats, they break the pieces of influence before crafting them into their own beast on ‘Future Forecast’. |

An origin story since time immemorial, the five piece came together in 2018 through the traps of the Melbourne music scene. Bonding over a shared love of tightly coiled riffs and a collective musical ethos, they channelled this into their first EP ‘New Vietnam’. In a head rush recording session, the 7 tracks were slammed out in a single day, with the underground hit going on to sell more than 1500 units worldwide. Making a name for themselves through the intensity of their live shows, their ‘New Vietnam’ launch would become one of those folklore moments within Melbourne. Taking to the stage with a contoured cheek and darkened eyes, McCullough’s glamoured stage presence beamed and boomed over the sold out crowd. Cutting through the scene with cult-like vigour, their garnered momentum would lead them to a string of sold out 7 inches, a European tour, a spot on the beloved Golden Plains Festival, a new found home on the revered Flightless Records, and a fan in punk icon Henry Rollins, “I am digging that band… not one bad track in their recorded catalogue”. |

With momentum in the tank, they took to various locations across Victoria to get the beds of Future Forecast down. From Richmond’s historic Bakehouse Studios in all its grandeur, to a DIY run storage shed on High St, there’s consideration for the new and old on this album. Paying homage to the classics, but pivoting on them with avant-charged edge. It’s raw, searing guitars; pummeling rhythms; driving bass; with vocals that lock into and synergise with their wall of sound. Balanced by the raucous and restrained weaving of melodies and textures, the imbued sense of nostalgia, and the vocal variation which broadens their sound past any one genre label. There’s the horn fuelled drive of album opener ‘Radiant Eye’, the power pop ladden hook of ‘As Seen On Tv’, the emotively atmospheric and vocally subdued ‘Sunday Best’, culminating with closer ‘Come To Know’, before ending in a tightly wound splay of feedback and groove. |

The remix follows MAY-A‘s recent ‘No Place Like Home‘ tour, her debut headline shows to sold-out crowds, the result of a breakout year in 2020 with the release of ‘Apricots‘ and ‘Green‘, both of which received rotation from triple j. ‘Apricots‘ secured MAY-A‘s Hottest 200 debut at #190, following her inclusion as the coveted triple j Unearthed Feature Artist and the #44 Most Played Artist of 2020. Both singles have achieved widespread international support from NME, Variety, Dork, Out Front, American Songwriter, Elevator, RAGE, Tone Deaf, Pilerats, Sniffers, Coup De Main, Purple Sneakers, Early Rising, Ones To Watch with the success of ‘Apricots‘ accumulating over 5 million streams across DSPs to date.
Songwriting since age twelve, Maya Cumming has honed a brand of lyricism that marries the classic pop structures and storytelling of the parental favourites that permeated her childhood home, together with the nonchalant Gen Z cool of Clairo, and the suburban poetry of Lorde. With her poignant, elliptical storytelling, clear-eyed observational lyricism, and songwriting full of musical left-turns, as MAY-A she interrogates the realities of youth with clarity and maturity beyond her 19 years, and ‘Time I Love To Waste‘ is the latest piece from her treasure trove. Stay tuned as MAY-A continues to share her goldmine with the world.

AFL STARS + MUSICIANS AMPLIFY PLEAS TO SUPPORT LIVE MUSIC VENUES Matthew Richardson, Bob Murphy, Phil Jamieson + G Flip sing Melbourne music scene’s praises.
AFL legends Matthew Richardson and Bob Murphy have added their voices to the chorus of music lovers desperate to save Melbourne’s live music venues by appealing to the State Government to lift density restrictions. The AFL legends, encouraged by football’s triumphant return to Melbourne, now turn their focus to the city’s beleaguered live music scene.
Richardson and Murphy joined musicians Phil Jamieson (Grinspoon) and G Flip today to draw attention to the ongoing struggle faced by Victoria’s live music venues.
“Melbourne’s getting its culture back, its vibrancy back, but it won’t be complete until we get our live music back so I think its time that they were afforded the same luxuries that we have in our industry…Obviously the AFL is a massive industry and has the support of the big end of town and I feel like live music has been neglected a little bit” said Richmond great Matthew Richardson.
“Small venues are definitely the stepping stone for any musicians career, it’s the launching pad. It’s like the first two steps of the staircase, if they’re gone, how are you gonna get up?” said Melbourne musician G Flip.
“Until now we have been fumbling on, on a lot of goodwill and with the welcome support of JobKeeper” said Rod Smith of The Corner Hotel, “but that’s coming to an end next week along with rent relief and with our fixed costs remaining static…well, we’re in trouble basically”.
Last week, Save Our Scene Victoria urgently appealed to the Victorian government via an Open Letter which has now been signed by over 130 of Victoria’s live music venues. It calls for eased restrictions so that the live music industry can begin to trade sustainably when JobKeeper ends this week.
Whilst Save Our Scene welcomed the federal government’s RISE funding announcement yesterday, these competitive project grants are primarily targeted at festivals, concerts, tours and productions, and address project funding rather than assisting with music venues to cover core costs while they continue operate at 30% of regular capacity.
Despite what the headlines have suggested, live music venues are still subject to a one person per 2 square metre maximum density in Victoria, which equates to roughly 30% of normal licensed capacity. That’s a 70% drop in revenue, while costs remain static. No business can survive like this, especially after nine months of closure last year.
The South Australian Government yesterday announced an easing of maximum density rules for venues, allowing for a genuine increase in audience capacities. Today Save Our Scene asks the Victorian State Government to do the same, as they have already done for Victoria’s theatres and sporting events. As JobKeeper ends, this is the only thing that will allow Melbourne music to get back on it’s feet.
Our music venues can not survive without Victorian Government intervention.
So please, protect our music venues. Support our artists. Save our scene.

NU-JAZZ GROUP KYOSHI RELEASE NEW SINGLE MOTHER OUT NOW PRAISING THE DEVINE FEMININITY IN ALL OF US
KYOSHI is a Sydney four-piece band who converse in rhythm and melody. They’ve synthesised their own distinctive voice, with a futuristic and progressive interpretation on the psychedelic offerings of 60’s soul, funk and jazz – that soulfully stimulates both the mind and body.
Teasing the inevitable debut album, Kyoshi’s first release for 2021, Mother is a spiritual honouring to the feminine power in us, and in the universe that surrounds us. The great Earth Mother has unbound generosity for her children, as she watches over them grow and develop.
Opening with ethereal chimes to tickle your ears, Mother quickly jumps into a swampy groove that’ll resonate with your internal rhythms. Leah’s poetic lyrics have a swift momentum that leads the funk-laden chorus. Throughout the song the harmony builds to a beautiful crescendo where the repeating phrase “She brings forth new life” perfectly captures the raw power of the great Earth Mother.
Grounding their sound in nu-jazz and future-soul, Kyoshi’s music is complex but never overwhelming. The bands previous releases, Lush and Naima received strong support from triple j, FBI Radio, 4ZZZ, 2SER, and KCC Live (England).
KYOSHI “MOTHER” OUT NOW
Follow Kyoshi:
What is your name and role within Kyoshi Mother?
My name is Leah Wilkie, I front the band playing keys and singing, and I do quite a lot of the song writing as well.
Where are you currently based?
I live in Newtown, the boys all live in and around Newtown and Marrickville too so we’re more or less based in Sydney’s Inner west – a great hub for local artists.
What’s been happening recently and how has your Covid experience been so far?
Well, Covid for me personally was amazing. I loved being able to slow down, and to do a lot of self-work and self-reflection. We don’t get a lot of opportunity to do that in our society, we really have to make time for ourselves if we want it. I felt that collectively too, everybody really needed to realise the importance of slowing down and learning to sit with ourselves. On the other side of that, I am also excited that things are opening up again for everybody – although I do hope that everyone can find a bit more of a balance coming out of their experience in 2020.
Your new single ‘Mother’ is out today, what influenced the sound and song writing?
Collective feminine energy was the big inspiration for Mother! I really felt energised by a lot of the amazing women in my life, and inspired by some of the leading female artists in the scene too like; Allysha Joy, Moonchild and Nai Palm. I really wanted to honour the creativity, and the divinity that lies within us and is all around, through nature, connectivity and love.
How did you go about writing Mother?
Well, I was sitting at the piano, I had the bass line and the vocal melody in my head already, and then I settled on some chords. The lyrics really just flowed straight out of me at the time – something that does not happen often in the writing process for me. It was something that I just really needed to express – It was also a reminder to myself to honour my own creativity and divine femininity too. To always show myself more love!
Where and when did you record/produce/master and who with?
We did most of the recording at Coda Audio and at Yianni’s house (our guitarist and synth player) over 2019 with our recording engineer Felix Abrahams. Felix also mixed our record, we did that at his place, and Madalyn Henly from Viking Lounge Studio is our mastering engineer.
How did you approach the recording process?
We went in a little blind, it being our first record and all. We definitely learnt a lot coming out of the experience, we know what we would do again and what we would totally change next time round. But we had a lot of fun recording and adding parts in, we really took our time with everything too. We preferred to sit on ideas and flesh things out as they came rather than rushing.
You’re playing 8th April at Waywards – Newtown, what do you have in store for this gig?
Yes! We are so so excited for this show, I am bursting to play live again. The show is going to be huge, we’ll be playing some tunes off our upcoming record, there will be ethereal soundscapes and improvised interludes and jams (amongst other things) – we always love throwing in some improv and just vibe off each other.
You have a debut album pencilled in for around August 2021, can you give us a hint of what to expect?
The love child of a caramel slice and a sticky date pudding, but for your ears.
Who are you listening to at the moment?
I’ve been loving Edu Lobo’s album Cantiga De Longe, some delicious Brazilian music, Yussef Dayes’ and Tom Misch’s latest creation What Kinda Music, Zeitgeist Freedom Energy Exchange – some crazy creators from Melbourne, and Epoch by Alfa Mist.
What do you like to do away from music?
I love to read actually, always got a couple of books on the go. I practice yoga often, I run small groups for friends too – honestly it keeps me sane! I’ve just started running women’s circles too – something I am extremely excited about continuing. Cooking is also a very cathartic practice for me. I’m also a music teacher, so I pour lots of my energy into that. I absolutely adore the crazy cycle of knowledge, and sharing something that I’m so passionate about with others is just so incredibly rewarding.
What’s planned for 2021?
For me, 2021 is all about honouring my own needs, and really becoming the person I want to be, surrounding myself with beautiful humans, and creating my own opportunities. I’m also really excited to see how Kyoshi’s path unfolds this year, really focus on expanding our flavour but mostly just really enjoying one another and enjoying the journey.

Baker Boy Releases New Single ‘Ride’ feat. YirrBaker Boy Releases New Single ‘Ride’ feat. Yirrmal
Baker Boy today releases his new single ‘Ride’ – a track to help you forget your worries — even if just for a night. ‘Ride’ premiered this morning on triple j’s Breakfast with Bryce and Ebony.
The official video premiere for ‘Ride’ and a live Q&A with Baker Boy will kick off tonight at 7pm (AEDT) on Baker Boy’s YouTube channel from here.
Baker Boy’s small but beloved oeuvre thus far has always been about making listeners feel good, feel free and feel in tune with the rhythms of the world around us. But that’s never been so explicit as on his new single , a new collaboration with his cousin Yirrmal that demonstrates just how distinctive and evocative Baker Boy’s music has become since he debuted with the instant-classic ‘Cloud 9’ in 2017. Described by Baker Boy as “a new and improved version” of his 2017 Yirrmal collab ‘Marryuna’ (#17 in that year’s Hottest 100), ‘Ride’ is the beginning of a new chapter for the Arnhem Land’s fresh new prince, a marker of ascendance from rising star to supernova status.
Funky, soulful, and jaw-droppingly catchy, ‘Ride’ is a party track lost to the annals of time, like an Off The Wall single re-recorded in Yolngu Matha. It’s the brightest-burning party-starter in a catalogue made entirely of them.
Baker Boy says of ‘Ride’, “I wanted to make a song that could bring people together on the dance floor, no matter who they are or where they come from,” “I’m driven by the vision that I have of people coming together, visions of positivity and fun and telling stories that people can relate to. That’s the main message — just bringing people together, no matter what your background, or how you dance, let’s just get together and celebrate and I think that’s powerful. We need more of that.”
Written in a session with Yirrmal and longtime collaborator Dallas Woods and produced by Pip Norman, ‘Ride’’s ease and carefree groove reflects the tight-knit relationships of its collaborators. Yirrmal, who came up with the powerful and catchy chorus, says, “I’m glad I got to collaborate with Baker Boy again and put that good Yolngu soul into ‘Ride’. This song’s about friends having fun, having good times every weekend. I wrote ‘Ride’’s chorus about my mob back here and when they want to go out. We see negative stuff around here, a lot of fighting, but with ‘Ride’ it’s like come on, don’t be shy, come to the town and let’s dance. Let’s be part of the team, think about the positive things and not the negative things.”
‘Ride’ arrives alongside a typically exuberant music video, directed by Ryan Sauer who “after hearing the song for the first time and how fun and energetic it is, my vision was to utilise that vibe when creating the imagery in the music video.”
Featuring Baker Boy cruising down some of Melbourne’s most iconic streets and letting loose in a packed nightclub, “The video brings the same excitement that the track does, it’s all about the journey to the club and bringing people together. It was incredible collaborating with Aurie Indianna on the creative direction again, with Ryan, Harry and the crew really bringing the vision to life!,” says Baker Boy of the clip.
‘Ride’ is set to become the latest triumph for Baker Boy in a career full of them. Nominated for the 2021 APRA AMCOS Song of The Year for ‘Meditjin feat. JessB’, the song was performed live over the weekend for Sounds Australia’s SXSW CLOSE UP showcase and most recently won Baker Boy (aka Danzal Baker) 2nd place in the prestigious Vanda & Young Global Songwriting Competition. His list of accolades continue with six career ARIA nominations; an ARIA Gold certification for ‘Cool As Hell’; six wins at the National Indigenous Music Awards; an Order of Australia medal; the 2019 Young Australian of the Year award; multiple placements in Triple J’s Hottest 100 and over 37.4 million streams of his music world-wide.

THE BRONX RETURN WITH BRONX VI ON AUG 27 VIA COOKING VINYL Early preview comes via ‘White Shadow’ single
The Bronx, the Los Angeles’ “rabid, feisty… and unrelenting” (Consequence of Sound) rock band whose sequential discography has seen the group through a nearly two-decade career, release the Joe Baressi-produced album Bronx VI on Aug 27 via Cooking Vinyl.
“I’m excited,” says guitar player Joby Ford. “From day one we really decided that we wanted to make a record that went in different directions and places. The thing I like a lot about it is that everybody contributed songs. It’s not just Joby J. Ford guitars with Matt singing over it. I loved listening to what other people wrote, and I think those differences and nuances really come through.”
“We’ve known each other for a long time,” adds singer Matt Caughthran, “and we’re such good friends and we’re so tight creatively, but we’re still learning stuff about each other, especially when it comes to the process of creating an album. Brad and Ken are just coming out as songwriters and we’re learning to write songs as a group around ideas they bring to the table. This is a really important record for us growth-wise because it kicked down a lot of doors that needed to be kicked down. I feel like now going forward the sky is the limit.”
An early taste of the 11-song album comes via the single White Shadow, a track Matt describes as “a song about spiraling. Wild eyed Guitars, drums, and bass mixed with a high speed chase and a frantic mind unraveling. CLASSIC F*CKING BRONX.”
Bronx VI was produced by Joe Baressi (Tool, Melvins, Bad Religion) at his House of Compression studio in Pasadena, Calif. Baressi is someone the band had wanted to work with for many years. “We’d been talking about doing a record together since 2005,” explains Joby, “and it finally aligned schedule wise.” Matt adds, “He was just the perfect guy for this record. We went in feeling really good about all the songs, and we just needed someone to make them sound fucking badass and take it to the next level. That was definitely Joe.”

SAPPHO RELEASES STUNNING DEBUT SINGLE ‘FLEX’ + JOINS THE IVY LEAGUE RECORDS ROSTER
Ivy League Records is incredibly excited to release ‘Flex’ – the irresistible new single & video from the label’s newest signing, Sappho!
The moniker Sappho is of great significance to Phoebe Baker (the iconic voice of Alpine). When she was born, her parents were torn between naming her Phoebe or Sappho, they opted for the former and so it makes complete sense that Baker’s first solo endeavor bear the name that could have been.
Sappho was born in early 2018, when Baker found herself exploring ideas and, for the first time, writing music without any real intention.
With no limitations or boundaries, Baker threw herself into exploring her pop influences. ‘Flex’ came early and set the tone, from there, the music began to flow. After a few months of writing, Baker realised these songs were turning into more than just a fun creative outlet, they had become something empowering, with a voice that showcased to the world her sound – the Sappho sound – a sound where lush pop meets something quirky, a little bit cheeky, a lot sexy and ultimately, something irresistibly fun.
Sappho’s music is vibrant and bold, experimental without being inaccessible. On her debut release ‘Flex’ Sappho is assured and mischievous as she urges the listener to find their inner power and ‘flex’ against a pulsating groove that is impossible not to dance to.
Marrying future pop with a healthy dose of Vogue era Madonna and 90s new jack swing thrown in for good measure, ‘Flex’ plants Sappho’s flag firmly on the Australian musical landscape, claiming her space as one of the country’s most exciting new artists.
