Carnage is taking the house scene by storm with the debut of his new house alias GORDO and new track “KTM,” out now on Ultra Records. “KTM” has spearheaded the launch of the GORDO project by expanding Carnage‘s expansive body of work into house music. With numerous sold-out GORDO shows already under his belt, including the iconic Club Space in Miami and 2021’s Super Bowl Weekend in Tampa, GORDO has paved the way to being the most buzzed-about house DJs of 2021. “KTM” consisting of groovy bassline and catchy vocals, has been in the works for over 3 years while gaining work-in-progress support from some of the world’s top DJs, including Sebastian Ingrosso, FISHER, Diplo, and Joseph Capriati.

“There is no question that ‘KTM‘ is the one track that defines exactly who I am as an artist in this exact moment in time. This song came together after years of self discovery through music and being open minded to new ways of life and inspirations. This is the beginning of the new me.” – Diamante Blackmon/Carnage/GORDO

Carnage has made a name through breaking the rules and staying true to himself. The Hawaii-based artist established himself as the reigning champion of hard bass and trap music with early hits, later being one of the first artists to transition electronic music into hip-hop, rap styles, and now house music. Before launching his label Heavyweight Records in 2017, Carnage put out hit after hit such as “I Like Tuh” with ilovemakonnen, “Bricks” with Migos, “Down for Me” and “Guala” with G-Eazy, “Homie” with Meek Mill and Yung Thug, “Learn How to Watch” with Mac Miller and MadeInTYO and “iShyne” with Lil Pump. After taking a break from music and touring in 2018 to focus on his mental health, Carnage dove right back into it with his hits “Letting People Go,” featuring Prinze George, and “Wait For Me” with G-Eazy and Wiz Khalifa. In partnership with the RAICES foundation, the music video for “Letting People Go” raised awareness for immigrants at the US / Mexico border and retraced Carnage‘s family’s voyage into America, as covered by TIME and dozens of other outlets.

CORDUROY SPACESHIP returns for 2021 with new single 'I DON'T CRY'

CORDUROY SPACESHIP

by the partae February 26, 2021
written by the partae

Where did ‘I Don’t Cry’ first start for you – how does the song resonate with you now?

The first part i wrote was the opening guitar line. Usually I fall out of love with stuff i’ve written shortly after releasing it, but this track has stayed in a pretty positive light with me which is unusual.

Your sound is super intricate and developed; can you remember your early sonic influences and do you think those influences have stayed the same now?

I was really into a weird mixture of Neil Young and hip hop as a kid and still am. I think you can see those influences in my song structures and drum sounds.

Who is inspiring you now (think of this as a bit of a recommendation question for readers)?

Dan Auerbach’s ‘Waiting on A Song’ and Lewis Coleman’s ‘Method of Places’

Can you tell us a bit about where you recorded ‘I Don’t Cry’ and who you worked with?

I Don’t Cry was recorded entirely by myself in three different bedrooms I have lived in over the last 12 months, one of which was a shed in Brunswick. The only other hands and ears to touch it were those of Mastering Engineer George Georgiadis @ Little Wing Sound

Were there any particular highlights of the creation process for you?

I didn’t plan on having any drums in the bridge but on the day I recorded the drums I kind stumbled upon a drum part while i was setting up the kit and fell in love with it. It the drums you now hear in the bridge!

The pandemic hit a lot of artists, and hit them differently – how has lockdown affected the way you approach music?

Lockdown hasn’t so much changed the way i approach music, but it definitely threw out most of my plans for 2020. I moved to Melbourne in hopes of finding band members so I could play live, but instead we were told not to leave our homes or socialise for 10 months

Do you think you work better – as in songwriting – alone or with others?

I find myself making quicker decisions when im working with others. Instead of debating with yourself for sometimes months, you can just ask for their opinion. I feel more confident when writing with other artists.

What are you looking forward to the most about music – yours and others – moving forward into 2021?

Every year Australian music is getting stronger and stronger and i can’t wait for Australian artists to receive more of the recognition they deserve. Australian artists are definitely making the best music in the world right now.

‘I Don’t Cry’ is out now.

YEEK ANNOUNCES NEW ALBUM ‘VALENCIA’ OUT MARCH 19TH SHARES SINGLE + VIDEO FOR TITLE TRACK

by the partae February 26, 2021
written by the partae

ACCLAIM FOR YEEK

“Yeek is the pop artist throwing convention to the wind”
i-D

“Unbounded by genre and making music that’s distinctly his own”
Complex

“Yeek’s songs are the best of both worlds, drawing on trip-hop and R&B in equal measure”
Pigeons and Planes

Today, Filipino-American singer Yeek is announcing his new album. Valencia is set to arrive on March 19th, and to coincide with the announcement he’s sharing the album’s title track and an accompanying video. The song is a lush soundscape with R&B sensibilities about community and heritage. The video is a surreal neon lit visual. Listen + watch HERE.

Valencia, Yeek‘s first proper release following his 2019 EP IDK WHERE, which Highsnobiety said “manages to effortlessly showcase his unique sound”, is his most emotionally lush and polished work to date. It features collaboration from from Jeff Ellis, the engineer who has worked with Frank Ocean, Snoh Aalegra, and Omar Apollo, and focuses on themes of relationship woes and keeping family close. Valencia will be accompanied by a short film Yeek has made for the project and is a reflection of his own relationship to life expectations and striking the right balance between independence and collaboration. Valencia, along with its accompanying short film, is a deep, ambitious body of work that invites serious engagement to explore and unpack.

For years Yeek preferred to work alone. Across two albums and two EPs, the L.A.-based singer-songwriter handled producing, recording, mixing, and mastering by himself. Because his songs are personal and resistant to genre classification, this method suited him. The DIY approach made sense for his evocative, guitar-driven portraits of youthful wandering and wondering. Singing about sitting alone in his room on ‘Only in the West‘, bummed because he has to board the bus while his drug-dealer friends are out driving cars — quintessential solo dolo music.

But not now. This year Yeek presents Valencia, his most emotionally lush and polished work to date, and his most collaborative too. Featuring production from his cousin, Kevin Halasan, Valencia is indebted to the vitality of family, close friends, and new romance. After strengthening his voice on tour and with a vocal coach, Yeek’s performances on Valencia are confident and vulnerable, shaded heavily by the R&B records he heard growing up during family karaoke. “R&B music is a deeply-rooted part of Filipino-American culture,” he says.

Born in New Jersey, Yeek spent his first decade living in a large Filipino community. Then he moved to South Florida, where he wasn’t just the new kid in town but one of the only Asian people outside his family. Bonding with kids who wanted to make music, he found a place for himself by joining punk and hardcore bands, and rapping.

All this music touched his own, making for a sound that is totally contemporary and genre agnostic, but still grounded in what can be done in a bedroom with a microphone and some instruments. Though Yeek produced nearly all of Valencia, its ten songs are powered by community. “Whole gang gotta eat,” he sings on the title track, and he means it. After coming off his first headlining tour in Europe in 2019, he decided to recommit to working with the people closest to him. “My priority is putting on the people I’ve grown up with,” Yeek says. “I feel that better art comes from working with family and friends. Otherwise, it’s making art via email.”

Valencia’s first track is ‘Lumbago‘, a mellow ode to family via memories of the back pain Yeek experienced as a young boy. His mom, his brothers, his cousin – they’re all embedded in the lyrics, sung over a slow bass riff, methodical drums, and a dreamy ever-present organ. The flipside of working with your loved ones is an increased sense of pressure and responsibility, feelings Yeek explores on ‘Overthinking‘. A propulsive, almost nervous bass line plays under his voice as he captures that sensation of watching your people laugh and have fun while you’re on the outside looking in, stuck in your head, running down your anxieties.

‘3000 Miles (Baby Baby)‘ announces the album’s other big driving force: new love. More than any of Yeek’s other projects, Valencia is an R&B record – he’s really singing this time around. There’s no genre better equipped to channel the energy of a new relationship in all its complexity, from the lusty highs to the confusing late-night lows. Buoyant with anticipation, ‘3000 Miles‘ mimics the singular ache of a long-distance relationship, when all you want to do is race to the airport and get on a flight in order to touch that person you can’t stop thinking about. “How’d you feel if I came through late at night, 3000 miles?” he asks on the chorus, over the biggest drums on the album. It’s the embodiment of yearning.

Valencia will be accompanied by a short film Yeek has made for the project. Shot in a home in southern California, it tells the story of a young boy (played by Yeek’s cousin) whose routine is controlled entirely by the sophisticated technology built into the house. What he wears, what he eats—every detail is accounted for and he isn’t given a choice. Until he decides to push back and forge his own path. It’s a reflection of Yeek’s own relationship to life expectations and striking the right balance between independence and collaboration. With its themes of relationship woes and keeping family close, Valencia is a deep, ambitious body of work that, along with its short film, invites serious engagement to explore and unpack. It cements Yeek as a generational talent with something to say, a leader who isn’t afraid of his vulnerabilities.

MANSIONAIR RELEASE NEW SINGLE ‘MORE’ WITH VIDEO, THE FIRST TASTE OF THEIR SECOND RECORD

by the partae February 26, 2021
written by the partae
Sydney trio Mansionair unveil their rousing new single, ‘MORE’.
An anthem for our times, ‘MORE’ is a disillusioned ode about the penchant for excess; the cyclical desire and need for just that – more. Recorded with the aid of UK producer extraordinaire Jon Gilmore (who is perhaps best known for his work with The 1975), the powerful, moving song was premiered by Hobba and Hing on triple j Drive, and offers the first taste of the band’s second album, which is due for release late in 2021. ‘MORE’ arrives complete with a fitting video from now Sydney-based creative, Courtney Brookes.

As singer Jack explains:

“Halfway through 2019, having just finished our touring cycle for Shadowboxer, we came to Sydney and settled back into some sort of normal routine. We began sketches for the next batch of music, sending ideas back and forth, searching for a common thread. Eventually we decided to get outta the city and head down to the south coast of Sydney for a writing trip. It was there we wrote the first iteration of MORE.

“We had set up the living room of an Airbnb and played music together from morning till night. MORE arrived on the final day and began as a concept about a character completely delusional with their desire for more. We started playing around in new time signatures trying to figure out where it fit best, eventually landing on 5/4 which has this feeling of never really resolving and always feeling tense. We left the cabin with the music and later that week went into the studio to write the melody. I spent the summer of 2019/20, refining and jotting down provocative phrases that linked to the topic, as I did I began to connect deeper with this feeling, resonating with this desire in me for more, competing with others, and repeating the cycle of buying useless shit to make me happy. It was such a fun song to write, collecting modern day problems and putting them into the song. It’s part tongue-in-cheek but was a real awakening in seeing myself in that character.

“Over 2020 we continued to build on all the other sketches written in that cabin collaborating with Jon Gilmore over email. Fortunately we had a lot of experience writing via the internet and were able to finish the bulk of the music whilst the world remained in lock down. MORE set the theme of the record to come, learning to be okay with what we have and finding meaning in the monotony.”

Mansionair released their debut album Shadowboxer in March 2019. A triple j feature album, Shadowboxer was written and self-produced by the band, the culmination of a journey that started with a viral hit single and led to high profile collaborations, including a Grammy-nomination for their single with Odesza in ‘Line of Sight’, gold ARIA-accredited tracks in ‘Easier’ and ‘Astronaut (Something About Your Love)’, Billboard charting singles and over 220 million streams across DSPs.

Their most recent, stand-alone single ‘Guillotine’ – a collaboration with US artist NoMBe – was released at the tail end of 2020 and picked up spins from triple j locally along with Alt Nation and SiriusXM in the US. Added to an impressive array of playlists across both Apple Music and Spotify, it showed off a dynamic new side to the band.

‘MORE’ continues that trajectory and hints at further exciting things to come.

BABITHA RELEASES DEBUT EP THROUGH THE LIGHT LISTEN TO ‘CARRY ON’ OUT NOW VIA SPUNK RECORDS

LOVE FOR BABITHA

“Though there are only two songs under the Babitha name,
they are both songs that conjure a singular incandesce”

Tone Deaf

“Babitha wants us to remember it’s okay to slow down”
Double J

“With two singles to her name, Babitha is turning heads
with a refreshing blend of alt-country charm and introspective, old-world songwriting”
Happy Magazine

“A fresh voice in the alt-country scene who paints visceral landscapes with these words and guitar lines. Mighty songwriting!”
Tommy Faith (triple j Unearthed)

“Country lilted with howling pedal steel
and a voice that invokes some of the greatest songstresses of our time,
Babitha has arrived everybody. This is the 2020 zeitgeist.”

Katherine Devaney (ABC Country)

Folk songwriter Babitha today shares her debut EP, Through The Light, via Spunk Records. Experience Babitha live at Mary’s Underground on Friday March 12 where she will be launching her debut EP. Tickets available HERE + listen to Through The Light HERE.

Through The Light is a journey through heartbreak, retreat, and finding yourself along the way; accepting your flaws and building the strength to move on. The musical endeavour of Gadigal/Sydney creative Imogen Grist, Babitha‘s debut includes previous releases ‘The Clown‘, a prompt to not get caught up in what isn’t important, and ‘Get Away‘s ode to running away from inner city living, both of which received playlist rotation on ABC Country, Double J, triple j Unearthed and community radios, FBi Radio and 2SER. Completing the circle includes companion tracks ‘Carry On‘ and ‘Be Alright‘, that serve as reminders to push through tough times and that disarray is only momentary. “I can’t do nothing right, but I’m walking through the light to you,” sings Babitha on the title track, an assessment of putting others on a pedestal as a result of your own feelings of inadequacy, while ‘Golden Hour‘ is a sassy reprieve, boasting one’s self worth and letting go.

In her own words, Grist shares: “This EP encompasses a bittersweet moment in my life. At the time we started recording, I was living by the beach, making music in the garage with friends, tending to my veggies and enjoying the slower pace of a small community – it really felt like I was in the right place at the right time. The dream couldn’t last forever though, and by the time the EP was getting mastered, I found myself single, back in Sydney in a 5 person sharehouse, and lacking any sense of direction. The songs felt tarnished and I lost the enthusiasm I initially had for releasing my music. In hindsight, I think I was just super depressed, plus Covid didn’t help by quashing a lot of opportunities for an emerging artist, so I decided to tap out for a bit and went home to Orange to stay with my mum.”

She continues, “I avoided listening to music or writing any new songs as I just needed time and space by myself until I felt ready to face the world again. I was eventually ready to crawl out of my hole and there was enough emotional distance from the songs that I was able put the wheels in motion to release my first single ‘Get Away’. It was ironic that this song about ‘getting away’ and ‘moving out of the city’, something which my ex and I had attempted to do but failed, was the first track people would hear from Babitha. Regardless, it struck a chord (pun definitely intended) with audiences and I began to feel more confident as an artist. These songs serve as a useful reminder that not everything goes according to plan, but that’s ok!”

What happens when one of your biggest pieces of consistency in life and everything surrounding it, crumbles? Babitha explores that universal story of metamorphosis through relationship breakdown, it’s mourning process and the pieces that only you can put back together again, without the help of all the king’s horses and all the king’s men., across her debut EP. She traipses through the darkest corners of this voyage with a grit inspired by the mythology of the ‘other woman’, reshaped into an empowering fragility that could only be penned retrospectively. Now emotionally and physically recharged and ready to take on the world again, Babitha arrives on Through The Light, leaving us to wonder where she’s been hiding all along.

Through The Light is out now via Spunk Records, buy/stream it here.

Gardens of God

by the partae February 26, 2021
written by the partae

Where are you currently based?

Vilnius, Lithuania

How did you first start playing music?

I produce since 2002. After some time spent ghost producing and writing music for others, took a part as an artist as Downtown Party Network with my friend Saulty back in 2008. Tracks went viral in a disco scene so there was nothing else to do but start touring and dj’ing around the World.

https://youtu.be/D8SAuM4GOQo

Then, 2014 was the year when I started my solo career as Gardens of God on Maceo Plex’s Ellum Audio.

What’s been happening recently and how did you first start playing music?

Last year wasn’t good gig wise at all. Pandemic situation locked me as most of the artists in the studio. And that came out quite a good thing after all. Being stuck for such a long time gave opportunity to rethink of what’s important and where to go music wise. Can’t say I made something I don’t like, but since the first track the Idea of Gardens of God was I’m gonna do what I want and how I see it with no compromise. And after some time traveling I got lost a bit in the influences and trends of what happened around the scene. So no gig year took me back to where I should be.

Your 10 track debut is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

I’m trying not to be influenced , but it’s impossible. Everything you see, everything you go through in your life, everything you hear builds the context which influence you want it or not. I was studying piano for 8 years and you can definitely hear it in this record.

How did you go about writing the record?

I always wanted to make a long play. EP’s are standard in electronic music scene today, but an album is like a full story not a chapter for me. Fear of being misunderstood stopped me from making it as I dreamed of kinda different one, the one to listen to, not to dance to. But as I told, the pandemic time brought me to discussion with myself and I found I don’t wanna compromise in any ways.

Where and when did you record/produce?

Some tracks where started in my old studio few years back. I recorded vocals of Aparde also the song with VAARWELL back then but something happened and I got scared of releasing it. Few more demos came into my secret folder since last year when I realised I need it to be heard. I need the world to know about my feelings and the point of view music wise. After that it went super smooth and fast, I finished those songs and tracks in my new room and put them in one final piece on autumn of 2020.

What programs and equipment did you use?

I use Logic Pro, also quite a lot of outboard gear (photo attached). Vintage Korg, Roland, Access synths, tube compressors and some classic stuff like GML equaliser, SSL buss compressor and Zener LImiter by Chandler Limited.

Why did you decide to create and release a record now?

It’s not the best time to release music at all, I know. But for me, it’s important to publish it now, cause it represents the end of the period I came through searching and trying to find myself.

The record is quite different to your last, how did the change in sound/songwriting come about?

As I worked with a lot of pop music and music for movies / tv shows, the melodic part of me was little bit overshadowed. That is bad, because I graduated as a musician and I always loved harmony – rich music, so I think that part of me took over finally and said enough with just only electronic tracks.

What’s the meaning behind the name of the album?

I feel sometimes, like I live in a movie. Things happen, dramas and experiences I go through, makes me think it’s not real. But when it ends and I feel alive again, I wanna save it and remember that all bad things has the END.

I still work with soundtracks and background music sometimes, so that would be a shame not to do a soundtrack for the movie I live in, for the end I experience.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Lots of piano music – Bugge Wesseltoft, Nils Frahm, Ryuichi Sakamoto. Indie rock is one of my top picks all the life also. I really never stuck on one genre or style. But I never listen techno or house music at home or in a car, that might be strange to hear from a dj, but I leave dance music for parties and stages I perform.

What do you like to do away from music?

I love cooking and baking. One of my dreams is to open the bakery when I’m retired. Also family took big part of my free time which is absolutely blessing.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2021?

Some remixes of the album tracks are already done by the artists I love, so it’s planned them to come out later this year. Also original music from me is already in a schedule so it seems like it’s gonna be a great year release wise.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

Everything is in a lockdown at the moment in Lithuania, so the favourite place to hang out is my home. This winter was amazing, we had so much snow and the nature looked like in a postcard. So we discovered a great activity on the lake make an ice hole and dip inside for few minutes with friends.

Halcyon Gray Premiere

Gray is the alter-ego of Alberta singer-songwriter Taylor Hambly. Although barely out of her teens, she’s already got a decade of experience under her belt. Beginning at age 9, travelling from talent show to community event seemed to be a weekend routine for the young musician and her parents. “There is something special about performing at community events; I would always get little girls dancing in front and it would remind me of how music has shaped my own life,” she says.

Influenced by Dua Lipa, Anne Marie, Carly Rae Jepsen and Mable, she began writing her own songs, releasing singles such as Friend Zone, Always Come Back and Broken beginning in 2016. Having connected with Vancouver producer Ryan Stewart in 2019, Gray began work on her full-length debut. “This album is everything I have inside me,” she says, describing the forthcoming disc as both fun and vulnerable — like going to a party where you end up in the backyard on a swing, pouring your heart out to a stranger. “The main goal is that my music speaks to somebody — even if it’s just one person, it’s enough.”

David M. Western reveals the second instalment from his forthcoming debut album with the wonderfully introspective, ‘Take Your Opportunities’

“David M Western is getting stronger with every release this year. Instant Life has that same kind of magic that Phoebe Bridgers brings to her music. There is an uncanny melancholy that feels so right to sink into, and DMW gently guides you through the feels, even if they make you want to cry.” – Nkechi Anele, triple j

“a meandering beauty.” ★★★★ – Declan Byrne, triple j

Day-dreaming, whimsical and deft, Melbourne artist David M. Western delivers a special new sound with insightful lyricism and powerful, distinct musical arrangements on his new single ‘Take Your Opportunities’. Following from his latest track and LP genesis, ‘Instant Life’, ‘Take Your Opportunities’ delivers David’s distinct reflective poeticism that continues to interrogate and stretch the boundaries of what it means to be a songwriter.

Out today, ‘Take Your Opportunities’ is the second track to be lifted from David’s forthcoming debut album due later in the year and follows two people at the beginning of a new relationship who are each doubting their ability to enter it fully. A somewhat satirical look at the way we often doubt ourselves in relationships and question why another would want to get to know our messy selves, ‘Take Your Opportunities’ reminds us to go with the flow, do things because they feel right, and take every opportunity life throws at us.

“This is the second chapter in this journey that I’m trying to detail through my releases. I wrote it almost tongue in cheek about a relationship between two people entering into a relationship. Kind of like a ‘are you serious? I can barely cross the street or behave like a real person. How can you afford to take a chance on me?’. I wanted to ramble off things about these characters whose lives were a hot mess and were also looking at themselves saying ‘is this possible for someone to actually want this?’. With my single before – ‘Instant Life’ – I was detailing what the listener was getting into, now this song reads as a ‘brace yourself. Get ready. We’re going all the way here.’” – David M. Western

Born and raised in the shadows of The Grampians, Victoria, David honed his performance skills playing the local pubs before even considering becoming this strange, ethereal, ghostly thing – a ‘songwriter’. Now, having been writing songs for a mere five years, David’s profound musicality has already earned him a reputation as a cherished and vital up and coming Australian artist. With only a handful of standalone singles released to his name; ‘Step On My Toes’, ‘Gallery’, and most recently ‘Instant Life’, David’s carefully considered and quietly evocative songwriting has lead him to sharing stages with some of Australia’s finest songwriters such as Julia Jacklin, Spacey Jane, Mimi Gilbert and Cousin Tony’s Brand New Firebird. David is coming out of isolation and hitting the stage for his first show of 2021 at Some Velvet Morning alongside Annie Rose Maloney on Saturday 13 March.

‘Take Your Opportunities’ Lyrics
Come one come all,
If you find that as you dress you’re just a silhouette
You wanna be seen just as a man with history
Sometimes it feels so slow it’s like you’re running out of steam
Did you win in a deal?
You know you haven’t won it till it’s real

Don’t give me a call
The nighttime is the right time to be no one at all
Everyone will say it’s like you’re half a day away
In an instant they will show you how to stop a moving train
What’s going on back home are they mad or just insane?
It’s no bargain or steal
Your life is just so unreal

That’s life as a real boy
That’s something I haven’t seen
You take your pictures and leave
You take your opportunities

Yeah go on and keep it in,
As you’re faking to the left with a cheeky grin.
I spoke to your mum she says you’re worrying
I know it’s no fun being told again
I know it’s no fun being told again
You gotta listen to your gut
Before you turn around and say you haven’t had enough

That’s life as a real boy
That’s something I haven’t seen
You take your pictures and leave
You take your opportunities

FALSE IDOLS
TRICKY – ‘LIKE A STONE’ (TRENTEMØLLER REMIX)
OUT NOW

LISTEN TO ‘LIKE A STONE’ (TRENTEMØLLER REMIX) HERE

Last September, Tricky released his “most darkly moving music in years” (Pitchfork) & critically acclaimed album ‘Fall To Pieces’. Today, he announces a remix EP with contributions from trentemøller, Kahn, LA Timpa and Lafawndah. Four artists that are each known for their own trademark production styles, recalibrate and incorporate Tricky’s music into their own sonic terrains.

“I was very honored when Tricky asked me to remix ‘Like A Stone’ as I’m a huge fan of his work – and it’s a really great song! I only used his and Marta’s vocals and build up an entirely new song around them, focusing on a melodic and mystical vibe”.
trentemøller

Tricky may be over three decades deep into his music career, but he’s currently on an especially prolific run. In the last year, he dropped the enchanting “20,20” EP and put out an acclaimed autobiography, ‘Hell Is Round The Corner’ as well as recording ‘Fall To Pieces’  in his Berlin studio in late 2019.

‘Fall To pieces Remix’ EP Tracklist:

01. Tricky feat. Marta – ‘Like a Stone’ (trentemøller Remix)
02. Tricky feat. Marta – ‘Fall Please’ (Kahn Remix)
03. Tricky feat. Oh. Land – ‘I’m In The Doorway’ (LA Timpa Remix)
04. Tricky – ‘Vietnam’ (Lafawndah Remix)

Tricky ‘Like a Stone’ (trentemøller remix) is out now on False Idols / !K7 Records

WOLF ALICE ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM BLUE WEEKEND – OUT FRIDAY 11 JUNE 2021 + FIRST SINGLE ‘THE LAST MAN ON EARTH’ OUT NOW

by the partae February 25, 2021
written by the partae

Wolf Alice, one of Britain’s most revered bands and winner of the Mercury Prize 2018 for their last album Visions Of A Life, today announce their highly-anticipated third album, Blue Weekend, due for release on 11 June via Liberator Music / Dirty Hit. The first glimpse into this new world, ‘The Last Man On Earth’ was premiered as Annie Mac’s Hottest Record in the World on BBC Radio 1, continuing a tradition started when Annie played ‘Giant Peach’ from the band’s Gold-certified debut LP My Love Is Cool, as her first song when taking over the the weekday evening show in 2015.

The Last Man On Earth’ is an evocative return, finding Wolf Alice blurring the lines between classic songwriting, graceful atmosphere and their signature pin-sharp choruses. It is a song full of poise and confidence, the work of a band who raise the bar with every single release. Lead singer Ellie Rowsell is an artist with a rare songwriting gift – the ability to tread the fine line between consummate storyteller and confessional lyricist. The song arrives with a video by director Jordan Hemingway (Gucci, Raf Simons, Comme Des Garçons), featuring Rowsell in the spotlight and signalling a bold introduction to this new era of Wolf Alice.

Elaborating on who the titular The Last Man on Earth is, singer and guitarist for Wolf Alice Ellie Rowsell says,

“It’s about the arrogance of humans. I’d just read Kurt Vonnegut’s Cat’s Cradle and I had written the line ‘Peculiar travel suggestions are dancing lessons from god’ in my notes. But then I thought: ‘Uh, your peculiar travel suggestion isn’t a dancing lesson from god, it’s just a travel suggestion! Why does everything need to mean something more?””

Wolf Alice are Ellie Rowsell (vocals, guitar), Joff Oddie (guitar, vocals), Theo Ellis (bass) and Joel Amey (drums, vocals). It has been a decade since the band began as a duo of Ellie Rowsell and Joff Oddie,  then later expanding to a four-piece, with Joel Amey and Theo Ellis joining the group. Since then, the band saw their 2015 debut album My Love Is Cool soar to #2 on the UK charts, their sophomore album Visions Of A Life win the 2018 Hyundai Mercury prize, and a GRAMMY nomination for Best Rock Performance. The band played a massive 187 shows on the Visions Of A Life world tour – including a sold out Alexandra Palace, 2 sold out dates at Brixton Academy, and a set on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury.

It was no surprise that creating a follow-up to Visions Of A Life was a daunting task. The record was a huge success, which subsequently led to many months spent on tour – with intercontinental flights, hotels and long-bus journeys taking a toll on the band.

The band decamped to an Airbnb in Somerset, and it was here that they reconfigured who they were together, far away from festival stages, tour buses, awards shows, and fans. They cemented their friendship and set to work on some fledgling demos in a converted church. These demos evolved into Blue Weekend, a record produced by Markus Dravs (Arcade Fire, Björk, Brian Eno, Florence + The Machine) who has aided the band in refining their sound to an even sharper point. Rowsell’s personal storytelling is at the core of Blue Weekend, an album that sees Wolf Alice embrace a newfound boldness and vulnerability in equal measure.

Blue Weekend will be released on 11 June 2021 and will be available on limited edition red transparent vinyl, yellow transparent vinyl and green vinyl, as well as black vinyl, CD & all DSPs.

INTRODUCING ALT POP TRAILBLAZERS KERO KERO BONITO SHARE NEW SONG ‘THE PRINCESS AND THE CLOCK’ + ANNOUNCE CIVILISATION II EP OUT APR 21ST

by the partae February 25, 2021
written by the partae

PRAISE FOR KERO KERO BONITO

“Kero Kero Bonito bounce between bouts of chaos and the absolute cheeriness of pure pop,
a sensation that suggests they are tinkering with those wild old memories,
trying to reconcile them with reality.”

Pitchfork

“Kero Kero Bonito have found the sweet spot between sounding out of time
and ahead of it, all at once”

The Guardian

Alt-pop trailblazers Kero Kero Bonito share their new single ‘The Princess and the Clock‘ today alongside the announcement of their forthcoming EP Civilisation II, out April 21st via AWAL. A sequel to 2019’s EP Civilisation I, in which the band envisioned a historically-ambiguous alternate-reality, Civilisation II sees KKB continue to explore instinctive human tendencies across three tracks, all completely devised using vintage hardware. Listen HERE, watch ‘The Princess and The Clock‘ HERE.

The boundary-pushing, shape-shifting trio has amassed a supersized fanbase that spans generations. Over half of their audience are under the age of 22 and the band has a combined 175 million streams, all whilst remaining self-produced and independent. KKB has seamlessly morphed through alt-pop genres, from creepypasta ‘90s indie to fourth world alt-pop, aligning themselves with enlightened musical influencers such as 100 gecs, Charli XCX, Rina Sawayama, and exaggerated electronic pop music cabal PC Music.

‘The Princess and the Clock‘ is a lively and complex anthem that matches colourful synths with old-time mythology, creating an engaging balance of experimental and pop tendencies. The lyrics see KKB recount a fictional tale of their own devising, telling the story of a princess sailing the world who is kidnapped by a primitive society and held in a glass tower. One day the captors find her gone and the glass smashed; it’s up to the listener to decide how she left. The fable is perfectly illustrated via an animation by Dan W. Jacobs.

Kero Kero Bonito explain; “The Princess and the Clock is the tale of a young explorer who is kidnapped while sailing the world, imprisoned at the top of a tower, and worshipped as royalty by an isolated society. Trapped in her chamber, she spends years dreaming of escaping, until one day she disappears. A legend of our own invention, “The Princess and the Clock” was written before Covid emerged, though the long, lonely hours and escapist dreams its protagonist experiences will be relatable to many right now. It’s a song for anyone who has ever felt trapped, lost, and alone.“

KKB’s Civilisation era was inspired in equal parts by early ambassadors of art-pop such as Kate Bush, David Byrne, and Ryuichi Sakamoto, as well as their modern equivalents Grimes, Caroline Polachek, and Björk, as well as trumpeter Jon Hassell, who developed the concept of ‘fourth world’ music, which unified both primitive and modern sounds. Much like Civilisation I, all three tracks of Civilisation II are produced using only old hardware which both trivialises and exaggerates the ideas that lie within the EP, a thematic fusion of the ancient past, grand present and distant future all at once. Across the EP, Sarah Bonito wrote lyrics as they came to her, is half Japanese, half English, reflecting the multi-dimensional way she thinks and understands language.

The past 18 months have seen the band breaking new ground. Driven by their understanding of the machinations of digital culture, they have encouraged the extrapolation of their music by their fans; in 2019, KKB’s tracks ‘Flamingo‘ and ‘I’d Rather Sleep‘ went viral on Alt-TikTok, exposing their music to legions of new young fans, with both currently garnering over a million streams per month. They found themselves going viral again in 2020 after they composed ‘It’s Bugsnax!‘, the theme to the hit PS5 video game, which led to them being described as “the internet’s new favourite meme ingredient” by GamesRadar. The band also appeared on 100 gecs’ ‘ringtone‘ remix alongside Charli XCX and Rico Nasty. These affiliations and collaborations placed the band squarely in front of an emboldened audience who were willing to dive headfirst into Kero Kero Bonito’s borderless and undefined pop music.

‘The Princess And The Clock’ is out now, buy/stream it here.

Live at the Bowl celebrates media partnership with 3KND

by the partae February 25, 2021
written by the partae

For the first time in Arts Centre Melbourne’s history we are thrilled to announce that 3KND, Melbourne’s first and only Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander radio station and digital platform, is the official media partner of Live at the Bowl.

The purpose of this partnership agreement is to identify ways both organisations can work together and create opportunities for collaboration and promotion in relation to the Live at the Bowl season that supports cultural and social impact for the arts community and the community of Victoria.

“This relationship is a strong step forward for both organisations. It shows a real commitment by Arts Centre Melbourne towards indigenous media. The board of First Australians Media Enterprises and Radio 3KND are proud to sign this agreement”, says General Manager of 3KND Gerry “GMan” Lyons.

This is the first time Arts Centre Melbourne has entered into a media partnership agreement that goes beyond the transactional components and establishes 3KND as a strategic advisor and collaborator on cultural safety considerations of our First Nations artists, community and staff.

“We first met 3KND last year when we hosted the Vic NAIDOC 2020 Concert Always Was, Always Will Be. It came as no surprise that we had instant rapport and both our organisations had a genuine desire to continue to work beyond NAIDOC 2020. This media partnership signifies so much more than just a signature on a dotted line; it shows our commitment to including all peoples across the media landscape in our projects. I know this will be an important ongoing relationship for us as an organisation and we cannot wait to see where this takes us next,” says Arts Centre Melbourne CEO Claire Spencer AM.

3KND has been on the airwaves since June 2003 and is proudly an independent and not-for-profit Indigenous radio and media broadcasting service which runs 24 hours, 7 days a week.

We’re excited to be welcoming visitors back to our venues in line with the most recent Victorian Government guidelines on COVID-19. We have opened our outdoor café Protagonist, the Sunday Markets as well as the Australian Music Vault. These openings coincided with the Live at the Bowl season, which officially kicked off on 8 January 2021.

While the ghost lights will stay on a little longer inside our venues, we will continue to offer audiences the chance to experience the wonder of the performing arts via our digital hub – Together With You. For more information including: our opening plans and related health and safety policies; bookings for free and ticketed events; and other digital content and experiences, please visit artscentremelbourne.com.au.
