Fremantle indie rockers FIGUREHEAD return with new single ‘ON REPEAT’

by the partae July 9, 2021
written by the partae

With new single ‘On Repeat’, Fremantle five piece Figurehead are cracking open a brand new chapter for themselves as a group.

They’re part of West Australia’s current wave of young artists adding their own unique flavour to the country’s indie rock tapestry; ‘On Repeat’ serves as an introduction to East Coast newcomers and for those playing at home, a reminder of the talents at play. In recent years, the band has been thriving off their expansion as a live unit, using what opportunities were available in 2020 to road test new music and prepare for a new year of music goodness.

Which brings us here: a three and a half-minute blissed out ride, indie rock built on a foundation of groove, melody and sun-kissed vibes.

Says Figurehead frontman Joe Caddy, ‘On Repeat’ explores feelings of paranoia and entrapment, particularly ‘those that manifest themselves whilst under the influence of psychedelic substances.’

“The main riff that initiated the song was the first thing I played when I picked up my new Fender Telecaster and the lyrics followed. The song initially had a longer run time and a different structure, but the short poppy skeleton of the song was in part, the vision of Dave Parkin of Blackbird Studios, who produced the song.”
Figurehead, Joe Caddy

For the ‘On Repeat’ music video, Figurehead linked up with Cooper Gordon and Ashleigh Hunter  (Gordonco Visuals) to collaborate. Filmed at Perth’s Johnny Ma Studio, the ‘On Repeat’ video definitely captures the off-kilter dreamlike vibes the song itself produces.

“They [Cooper and Ashleigh] were super organised and smashed it out in a day, including Joe having to get into a cold swimming pool for the underwater shots. Cooper and Joe had a clear vision for the video and the chemistry between the two was obvious.”
Figurehead

Figurehead have developed consistently since their inception into a formidable young force on the West Australian music scene.

Forming in high school, then hitting the ground running with music as their priority straight out of it, the band had their first major breakthrough in 2018, where their single ‘Ear To Lend’ won the WAM Song of The Year Award. The same single was also nominated for Best Indie/Alternative Rock Song at the 2019 Independent Music Awards, held in New York.

And now, with their lineup and direction ready and raring to go for 2021, Figurehead can’t wait to be back on live stages, getting more new music out to the masses.

PRAISE FOR FIGUREHEAD

“Can see this one at a festival – people singing along while thinking about their own life. it’s simple, catchy rock.”
Triple J, Declan Byrne

“Classic indie pop with a sweet textured voice that’ll sit just right on everyone’s taste buds.”
Triple J, Claire Mooney

“Catch AF and tight as a treasurer’s purse string in the middle of a financial crisis.”

#2 Official Irish Albums Chart

Following the Instrumental release of their self-titled debut album, today For Those I Love share their latest, football-inspired music video for ‘To Have You‘. LISTEN + WATCH HERE.

Across an album that leans heavy on what it is to belong, football is a recurring theme, and specifically Shelbourne FC – a Dublin based football club who play in the First Division of the League Of Ireland. Shelbourne, affectionately known as the Coolock Reds, provides and has provided real community to David and his friends over the years with the club even appearing on the cover of the album. On that cover a fan holds a flare aloft from the terraces, set alight at 27 minutes to represent the 27 years of age at which they lost Shelbourne fan, and David’s best friend, Paul Curran.

David had the following to say about ‘To Have You‘, which successfully and poignantly captures the real-life community and sense of life that exists around a football club: “The trip out to the football can feel like a pilgrimage. Every mix of bliss and pain and glory is felt in the terraces each week, but it’s been lost for us all since the world changed overnight. Being back in the stands as To Have You was shot felt like a shower of relief and beauty, and I can’t thank Niall (Trask, director) enough for his vision and understanding of what it all means. The track is very much about survival, reflecting on a world me and mine grew up through and confronting those who question it. I am blessed to be able to hear this in a new light now as it’s mixed with Niall’s art.”

Directed by Niall Trask and produced by Dan Matthews in and around Tolka Park, they share the following about the video’s creation: “When we first started speaking to Dave, it was clear how important Shels were to him. Football has a beautiful way of bringing people together – it’s not about the game itself, or winning or losing, it’s about connection – and that quickly became apparent when we started working with the club and its amazing supporters who feature. The video is about finding community in a time of bleakness and disconnection. While there’s an absurdity to a team playing with no fans in the ground, despite the usual fanfare of flags, celebrations and rituals, the small moments we captured around Drumcondra and Tolka park show a resilient community where life keeps pulsing, and young and old are united by their beloved local team.”

The club’s shared stadium, Tolka Park, where David and his friends would go on to scatter Paul’s ashes, is currently under threat. You can read more about the Save Tolka Park campaign here.

DZ DEATHRAYS RELEASE NEW ALBUM POSITIVE RISING: PART 2

by the partae July 9, 2021
written by the partae

DZ Deathrays release 5th studio album PR:P2

Share new track/video ‘Kerosene’

Bunnings Sausage Sizzle for Support Act in Brisbane on Sun 11 July

Announce livestream album listening party on Tue 13 July

Touring nationally this September (more dates to be announced)

“Throughout Positive Rising: Part 2, undoubtedly DZ Deathrays’ most guitar-heavy record to date, Shane Parsons regulates vocal nuances like never before, guitarist Lachlan Ewbank slays multitudinous ways and Simon Ridley’s drumming can only be described as majestic.” – STACK

“It’s built on the intuitive interplay between Parsons and Ewbank, whose heavily textured playing doesn’t always sound like guitars — more like a twin malevolent force that every so often waxes celestial, like sunlight spearing through storm clouds.” – The Australian (4/5)

“Moody Aussie noisemakers DZ Deathrays bring the concept album back to life. Again…”
– Kerrang (4/5)

“DZ Deathrays have gone beyond the noise and energy (which was excellent) that they had from the start and have created something truly epic, memorable and monumental. If there is any justice in this world, they should be huge.” – Wall of Sound (10/10)

Today it is with great pleasure that I OH YOU present you with DZ Deathrays’ fifth studio album, Positive Rising: Part 2, and share new track/video ‘Kerosene’.

With a moodier tone than its predecessor, PRP2 draws the outline of an apocalyptic scene, one that sees the band stepping outside of themselves, seeking out new perspectives and surveying the world from above. From up there, they don’t always like what they see.

‌I’m hoping for a positive rising / Capsized but the tide is turning / I feel the temperature rising / Chastised but the fire is burning.

“That lyric – Hoping for a positive rising – is about hoping that there was going to be this good thing that comes from the underground and sweeps up and overtakes all of the negativity,” Parsons says.

To celebrate the album release, DZ Deathrays had planned on spending some quality time with fans this weekend with a string of in-store signings. Once again, border closures have meant these had to be cancelled, and have meant so many in the music industry have again lost work due to cancelled shows. Not ones to be deterred and in the true spirit of keeping the positivity rising, the band (repped by Simon Ridley, due to Shane & Lachlan being unable to get to QLD) will be at Bunnings Cannon Hill this Sunday 11 July to get on the tongs to help Support Act raise some much-needed funds for workers in the music industry.
Simon will be accompanied by a few familiar faces from the Brisbane music scene, fans are encouraged to come down and grab a snag to help raise money for a good cause.

Following this on Tuesday 13 July the band will host a live online listening party with their fans. Kicking off at 7.30pm AEST via the band’s Facebook and YouTube, fans from all around the world can tune in for a beer with the band, ask them questions and hear the record in full!

Positive Rising: Part 2 (PR:P2) is the highly anticipated follow up to 2019’s Positive Rising: Part 1. After decamping to Los Angeles to record ‘Part 1’, the band returned home along with producer Miro Mackie to record ‘Part 2’, leading to a tonal shift between the albums. However, they’re designed to be treated as two halves of a whole, from the songs, which the band hopes will be played from beginning to end, to the artwork. “If you put those two album pictures together, it shows a full day. It’s like a yin and yang, showing the full spectrum.”

Latest track ‘Kerosene’ is one of the darker offerings and comes with a video directed by Joe Agius (Hatchie/The Creases). Stemming from an idea that sparked during a writing session with The Presets’ Kim Moyes (the beat you hear at the start of the track is from a demo made that day), it’s no surprise the result is a stadium-ready rock anthem.

WATCH: ‘Kerosene’ by DZ Deathrays
With PR:P2 DZ Deathrays deliver a sophisticated rock record that perfectly defines the evolution of their sound over the band’s 12 year tenure. All tracks released so far have been met with acclaim from fans and industry alike with adds to local and international rock playlisting on Spotify and Apple Music plus coverage from the likes of DIY Mag (UK), Upset Mag (UK), The Line Of Best Fit, Far Out Mag, Deadpress, Stereoboard, Blunt Mag, Rolling Stone AU, NME and triple j. ‘Fear The Anchor (feat. Ecca Vandal)’ was added to Amazing Radio (UK) and hit #16 on New Zealand’s national Rock Radio chart. ‘Fired Up’ and ‘All Or Nothing’ were added to rotation at triple j, both making it to the top 10 most played song on the station & saw the band recently perform a huge Like A Version, covering N.E.R.D’s ‘Rockstar’ featuring Brisbane rapper NERVE.

AIAIAI IS EXPANDING ITS AWARD-WINNING TMA-2 HEADPHONE SYSTEM WITH 2 NEW STUDIO HEADPHONES TO EQUIP THE GROWING COMMUNITY OF MUSIC MAKERS. The TMA-2 Studio Editions continue AIAIAI’s commitment to music creation and high-fidelity sound quality.

written by the partae

Danish audio company AIAIAI demonstrates its ongoing commitment to creation with the unveiling of two new editions to its award-winning and uniquely modular TMA-2 range. Trusted by music creators and performers on the road, in the studio, and on stage, AIAIAI continues to set impressive new standards for component headphones.

Featuring an upgraded sound quality and focus on the evolving demands of the modern production environment, the new TMA-2 Studio and TMA-2 Studio XE models are professional modular studio headphones equipped with AIAIAI signature audio and superior comfort. Building upon the industry leading and history of the constantly evolving TMA-2 headphone, AIAIAI’s commitment in producing high-quality headphone ranges is at the forefront of its ethos. The new TMA-2 Studio range has been in development for a number of years, extracting and advancing the impeccable audio quality and design of the TMA-2 headphones which are used globally by creators. Working in collaboration with a network of audio professionals, the TMA-2 Studio headphones take all the defining features of the TMA-2 model to create two new editions, curated for the studio setting and to enhance dynamic workflow. Both editions are set to be released in mid-July.

A headphone for discerning music makers, the TMA-2 Studio features highly detailed audio from the signature bio-diaphragm driver which ensures precise and reliable audio and isolation for the creative process. The bio-cellulose speaker diaphragm is made of a bacterial cellulose, an organic compound grown using certain types of bacteria. Renewable and biodegradable, with powerful acoustic properties, the diaphragm is made up of a structure of fine fibres. These fibres construct a very solid but lightweight material making it ideal for a speaker diaphragm.

“We are inspired by the rapidly growing community of music makers. The entry barriers to music creation have never been lower and we’re excited to be part of it! With the Studio and Studio XE, we bring the best from years of collaboration with artists and the award-winning TMA-2 into the hands of more creative people all over the world.”
Frederik Jørgensen (AIAIAI, Co-founder)

Applauded for their sturdy build and responsible design, the new additions to the range continue with innovation; providing enhanced comfort in the form of indulgent and resilient ear cushions covered in Alcantara on the TMA-2 Studio model and lightweight vegan leather cups with the TMA-Studio XE respectively. With both the TMA-2 Studio and the TMA-Studio XE featuring AIAIAI’s awarding winning and industry first bio-diaphragm driver, the Alcantara ear cushions are the perfect pairing on the TMA-2 Studio model creating both high-level comfort and increased sound profile. The new inclusion of the lightweight vegan leather cups on the TMA-Studio XE offer higher sound isolation, resulting in an advanced and diverse workflow for users. Both new editions also include the C02 cable which has been a signature feature of the TMA-2 headphone making it an ideal asset for studio production.

Both models revolve around the TMA-2 Modular Headphone System, which since its launch in 2015 has now become an industry benchmark with the uniquely bespoke opportunity to upgrade individual parts, or change between different combinations, extending longevity of the product.

The latest editions to the range will be available from mid-July at SRP €229.00 for the TMA-2 Studio and at SRP €179.00 for the TMA-2 Studio XE. AIAIAI have also partnered with digital DJ and music production software company Serato, to offer an exclusive bundle when purchasing the TMA-2 Studio headphones. Consumers will receive a free, limited time monthly membership to Serato’s music production DAW, Serato Studio.

Find out more on the TMA-2 Studio and TMA-2 Studio XE.

KEY FEATURES OF THE TMA-2 STUDIO RANGE

Signature AIAIAI sound tuned for clarity and detail.
Critically acclaimed sound specifically designed for studio use with a clear and highly detailed sound representation. AIAIAI paired the biocellulose diaphragm with a high-grade neodymium magnet which resulted in a speaker unit that offers a clear mid-range better dynamic and a more natural overall tonality. When tuning the speaker unit special attention was given to the clarity in the mid-range without compromising the extension in the bass range. This results in a very wide soundstage with great instrumental separation.

Enhanced comfort with Alcantara®. (applicable to the TMA-2 Studio only)
Ultra-soft over-ear memory foam cushions covered with resilient, CO2 neutral, and highly comfortable Alcantara® ideal for longer sessions.

Bio-diaphragm speaker for enhanced accuracy.
Diaphragm precision-grown from bio-cellulose making it stiffer, lighter and stronger than regular PET speaker units. The biocellulose speaker diaphragm is made of a bacterial cellulose which is an organic compound that is grown using certain types of bacteria. Bio-cellulose is an interesting material for many reasons: it’s renewable biodegradable and it has great acoustic properties.

High quality cable.
High quality coiled cable extending up to 3.2m for flexible and lossless experience.

Responsible modular headphones – designed to last.
Upgrade and expand as technology or needs evolve to extend the functional lifetime of the product and create less waste for the planet.

Two-year warranty
To guarantee long term, reliable audio performance a two-year warranty is included.

BALU BRIGADA RETURN WITH ‘HOW IT WOULD END’ EP RELEASING LATER THIS YEAR

by the partae July 9, 2021
written by the partae

Every song from Balu Brigada is something that you can nod your head along to, and you will quickly become familiar with the lyrics
 – Channel Mag

New Zealand alt-pop duo, Balu Brigada, return with their newest single, ‘How It Would End’; the first cut off of their upcoming EP, set to release later this year.

The single is a retrospective and unsympathetic look at an adolescent love affair that has since ceased to exist. Knowing that the relationship was doomed from the beginning, the duo dissects the relationship over a smooth, sultry and groovy beat.

The duo consists of brothers, Henry and Pierre Beasley, both of which are multi-instrumentalists, writers and producers. The pair began to create music at age 12, teaching themselves all the tricks of the trade, and only officially forming Balu Brigada when younger brother, Pierre, turned 18 and was old enough to play in bars.

“Before anyone else asks, the band name has its origins in the Jungle Book’s character Baloo – the ultimate chiller,” explains Henry Beasley, Balu Brigada

The single is released alongside a music video, created and produced by good friend of the duo, Riley Coughlin of Garbage Records. Set in a lawless world, the duo pose as investigators on a manhunt for a mystery person, following as they piece together the clues provided to them.

The single has already been added to a bunch of editorial playlist, including New Music Daily on Apple Music and Indie Arrivals on Spotify. The duo’s upcoming EP is set to drop later this year and while not much has been revealed, it’s set to be an impressive release as they’re fast becoming the ones to watch in the alternative pop and indie realm.

OLY SHERMAN releases highly anticipated album LAND OF ALL PRETEND Sydney songwriter touring through into August!
Music InterviewsMusic News

Oly Sherman

by the partae July 9, 2021
written by the partae

Releasing a full collection of music can be daunting for any artist, though dropping an album like this after the year we’ve all just been through feels cathartic – how are you feeling about the whole process, now you’re at the end of it?

I think yes to a lot of people, the idea of dropping any type of work during or post covid is a bit of a weird one. For me the concept of releasing my own album was something I thought I’d be delving into years down the line. I wouldn’t say my project was the sole consequence of covid, but it did play a big part. Like many I was out of a job, I had moved back home, and it gave me a chance to listen to a lot of the music/demo’s I had done over the past three years. About half of the songs on the project are a result of this study and the rest of the songs came through time and as the world kind of grew back together. Whilst I’m super proud of the album itself, I still feel a sense of imposters syndrome about it all. ‘How have I even put this together?’ etc etc. In saying all this, the album to me was about my personal growth, and has been a really good basis in the new music which I’m writing everyday.

We’ve heard some tops singles already from the album – how do you think they represent who Oly Sherman is as an artist in 2021?

I think with any of my work but particularly my singles off the album, they quite literally depict my life in those circumstances. Songs such as ‘Madness’ and ‘In The Summer’ are lyrically, pretty accurate representations of my emotional and physical state within the perspective. Whilst saying all of this, my taste and musical writing continues to grow. This album is definitely a representation of myself, but also a chance to show my growth. I’m even more excited to show what I’ve been cooking after the albums release.

And within the wider scope of the album, what is it about these recent singles that represent the energy of the whole album do you think?

I think in regard to a ‘wider scope’, these singles best represent my first few years of song writing as a whole. I was and to some respect, still am super familiar with writing those types of songs. The album is definitely a representation of that type of writing process that I felt comfortable with.

What has it meant to you that you’ve been able to have music as an outlet to concentrate on as we’ve had to grapple the pandemic?

I think its necessary to firstly say, that I was definitely a lucky one during covid. I was very, very thankful to have my family there as a support and know that a lot of other people weren’t so lucky in those respects. For me music and writing of music will always be a personal thing. I’m lucky enough that I can somewhat place that on an empty canvas and share it with the world. It’s a creative method which seems both easy and ‘nonchalant’. Rather than a distraction, I used my music as a means of perspective. It was present every day and kept my mind on what made me mentally healthy.

For people who might be coming to your music for the first time with this music, is there a particular song/s off the record that you’d say are the one/s you’re most connected with now (and why)?

Different for me, as some of the songs from the project I love in certain ways, and some songs which the band and I have performed I love in different ways. I think for someone coming to my gig for the first time, the main message from me is just to just focus on having a good time. I think especially when comparing it to covid related things, everyone coming back to gigs just want to be happy and share the joy of live music again. I want nothing more than that in my live shows.

This album is one of those records specifically made to be listened to front to back: was this an element you always had wanted to implement?

To be honest at the time, no but I think projects and music grows naturally into ways you didn’t expect them to prior. I’ve listened to the album a number of times and am pretty confident the order shares my mind state throughout.

Land of All Pretend is out now.

Moody and all encompassing is the best way to describe Olive’s signature alternative-indie sound, with her newest work being tinged with a country and western feel whilst harking back to the likes of Jefferson Airplane. Following her glittering debut, ‘Opium Requiem’, Olive is certainly destined for great things.

PerfectParachutePicture – White Walls EP

This EP is a gluttony of gut-wrenching riffage that renders difficult to put down. The 4-track body of work is the band’s most triumphant release yet. Give it a spin, for goodness sake.

Katie Kittermaster – Out Of Love

Sifa – Angel Energy

Alex Stanilla – Crab

Hazel Mei – Fool

Alto Key – Things Will Change

Boy Untitled – Losing Time

Ines Rae – New Girl

Today, Courtney Barnett announces her third studio album Things Take Time, Take Time. Set to drop November 12th on Milk! Records / Remote Control Records, the album is a finely woven collage of snapshots recorded at a time of creative renewal and deeper understanding for Barnett. The work signals an exciting new chapter for a musician who is operating at the very peak of her powers and it sees her consolidating her place in the storied global lineage of ground-breaking and influential female singer-songwriters.

Over the course of her discography to date, Barnett has made it her mission to record and bear witness to the minutiae and idiosyncrasies of life in all their awkward yet poignant glory. She has a catalogue of songs that are both acutely personal and so beautifully sketched that they can’t help but resonate deeply with the listener. This brings us to her third album.

Things Take Time, Take Time was written over two years and recorded towards the end of 2020 and early 2021 in Sydney, Northern NSW and Melbourne with musical kindred-spirit producer/drummer Stella Mozgawa (Warpaint, Cate le Bon, Kurt Vile). Things Take Time, Take Time is yet another assured leap forward for Barnett; a breakthrough really, but not in the ways you might expect. This is Barnett at her most creative and adventurous – an exquisite look at Courtney’s private world, and consequently her most beautiful and intimate record to date, with songs dealing unabashedly with love, patience, healing and self-discovery.

Album opener (and first single) ‘Rae Street’ sets the tone, a stirring, mid-tempo essay which details the everyday life of a small community while juxtaposing it against break-neck speed of modern society, particularly with the memorable chorus of “time is money; and money is no man’s friend”. In Barnett’s hands, the plaintive lyrics become intensely, strikingly alive, a work of astonishing lyricism that uses quiet actions and observations to pry open the way in which the human need to connect is often lost amidst the white noise.

Things Take Time, Take Time is a stunning, shining glimpse into Courtney 2.0 – no less droll and sharply observant, but more rhythmic, detailed, and effusive with it. This is Courtney’s world – full of the strangeness, busyness and undeniable warmth of life –  and you will definitely want to spend some time in it.

DUST OF US announce debut EP NEVER HAD THE TIME

by the partae July 8, 2021
written by the partae

July 2 sees Sydney duo Dust Of Us unveil their meticulously crafted debut EP Never Had The Time – a collection of six songs that chart the arc in the Prescott brothers’ creative journey over the past two years. From the EP, they also share a brand new cut – ‘Surrender’ – the pair’s most upbeat track to date.

Beginning with a pulsing synth and mellotron, the song soon blossoms and explodes into a huge chorus with hints of LCD Soundsystem, Pulp or Gang of Youths.

“‘Surrender’ is about sliding doors moments; looking back at key pivot points in your life and wondering whether you made the right choice. It’s also about identity – the different masks we wear throughout the course of the day – and how we make little adjustments to our personality based on the situation we’re in. Which is also something we’re aiming to capture with the video.”

Ed Prescott, Dust Of Us

All instruments on the EP were played by brother Ed and Lloyd Prescott, with the exception of guest vocals from UK-based Sydney ex-pat Jess Chalker on two songs. All six tracks were co-produced and mixed by Matthew Neighbour (The Avalanches, Matt Corby, Sky Ferreira).

The Never Had The Time EP features two new tracks in addition to previous Dust Of Us singles including ‘Punching Bag’, ‘The Swans’ and ‘7 Years’.  To hear all of this music threaded together paints a full picture for the listener of the fleshed out and textured soundscape that Dust Of Us have been developing over the past two years.

“My brother and I are incredibly proud of these songs. We’ve gradually been chipping away at them in my bedroom for the past couple of years; building them up brick by brick. Our music takes a while to  piece together because it’s quite layered – and also because we’re interested in so many different textures and genres. We have to give it time to understand what it is we’re making and how all the jigsaw pieces fit together.” Ed Prescott, Dust Of Us

PRAISE FOR DUST OF US

“Brilliant. Hard to believe this is just the second release from this brotherly duo.”

Mick Rad – 2SER, The Music

“Reminds me of the first time I heard ‘Unfinished Sympathy’ by Massive Attack. Get in now for maximum bragging rights.”

Ryan Sahb, Radio Adelaide

“[4 stars] Wow! This just keeps taking turns that I’m not expecting but definitely loving.”

Gemma Pike, triple j

“[4 stars] Love how this track develops over its course with some quietly sizzling energy. It’s a bit like LANKS meeting The xx..”

Dave Ruby Howe, triple j Unearthed

Never Had the Time is released Friday, July 2nd.

New York musician and producer Spencer Miles Abraham Allen, the brains behind Spencer., has announced details of his debut album and shares a first taste of new music today, via 4AD / Remote Control Records.

Released on 10 September, the eleven songs that comprise Are U Down? blend R&B, hip-hop, funk, indie, pop, jazz and soul to create a sound that encompasses analogue and digital, past and present. Written, recorded and produced by Spencer., the album’s first single ‘Lonely As I Ever Was’ is available now “’Lonely As I Ever Was’ was the last song I wrote for my record, I even made the outro the same day. The theme of this one is basically from the song ‘Next Lifetime’ by Erykah Badu, and I even reference it in the lyrics. Kinda like being on the other side of her situation, begging someone in a relationship to consider a relationship with you.”

Born and raised in Rochester, NY, to chemist parents who presciently gifted him the middle name Miles (for Miles Davis), a career in music beckoned from an early age with 4-year-old Spencer. lobbying his Jamaican mother and British father for trumpet lessons in tribute to his namesake. Rochester’s rich and underappreciated creative scene nurtured his musical skills, and he won a place on a summer jazz programme at the city’s prestigious Eastman School of Music in his teens. A self-taught producer who has always recorded in isolation, he started self-releasing home recordings in 2018, and eventually dropped out of college when his EP Want U Back became a word-of-mouth hit.

Now transplanted to the Brooklyn neighbourhood of Bed Stuy, itself a fertile ground for creative enterprise, Spencer. is a main player in a tightknit and supportive creative community that also boasts Clairo, Snail Mail, Claud, Advisry, Binki, Cautious Clay and Triathlon amongst its burgeoning talent.

Written and recorded during the pandemic, Are U Down? is about the struggle of a relationship and a sense of longing cuts through its 11 tracks. Featuring 4AD labelmate Becky and the Birds (vocals on ‘After The Show’), Luke Diamond (guitars) and Jake Aron (some additional production), Spencer. has integrated neo-soul vocal fireworks, hip-hop flow and pop ambition into an album steeped in all the feels of a New York summer.

Are U Down? is released digitally on 10 September 2021. Physical formats will follow in 2022.

Where are you currently based?

Melbourne, Australia 🙂

How did you first start playing music?

When I was 5 I started singing in a choir! I started playing professionally at 15 by pretending I was 18 and getting into bars.

What’s been happening recently and how has your Covid experience been so far?

I just released my new single “Can’t Do Anything Right” and I have some huge things happening in August you should keep an eye out for. Covid has been a roller coaster for many artists but I’ve persevered staying positive and active, I released a full EP called Normality in 2020, another single “Welcome” in 2021, a film clip and sold out my show at Howler.

Your new single ‘Cant Do Anything Right’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

I was frustrated! I felt like I couldn’t do anything right for myself or live up to everyone else expectations even though I was trying my hardest. It sort of just came out in 5 minutes.

How did you go about writing ‘Can’t Do Anything Right’?

I vocal looped it, did some pretty harmonies, a beat and a heavy simple bass line then I just started singing how I felt; “I can’t do anything right, trying my best, help me if I look left or I need my rest”. Then I added some instruments to thicken it up this time.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who with?

I wrote the song at home in my room, on my looper after receiving an email I was frustrated at in about April and recorded it in May, produced it Michael Cooper and Mastered it Nicholas Di Lorenzo, Panorama Mastering.

How did you approach the recording process?

I always have my own demos, phone recordings and all my ideas stored in my looper, then I smash it all out in the studio and add the cherries on top with extra layering or effects.

You’re playing Chapel Off Chapel on the 31 of July, how do you prepare for shows and what can we expect?

Yes I am! I will be looping, might play some guitar, I will also have some friends joining me on stage.

Who will you be playing with?

I will be solo with my looper and special guests.

What do you like to do away from music?

I’m pretty music obsessed, but I love a red wine over dinner or exercising.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Fresh Finds Australia and New Zealand playlist on Spotify because Spotify just added “Can’t Do Anything Right” to that Spotify playlist!

What’s planned for the remainder of 2021?

Can’t say too much yet but SO much, keep an eye out as you won’t be missing it. Expect an album in 2022.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

Shujinko Ramen, Russell Street, Melbourne

East Coast Rock Band Andre Pettipas and The Giants to Release New Album No Fools No Fun on July 9

A Who’s Who of Rock ‘n’ Roll Production Talent Lend Their Expertise To The Project

Toronto, ON – East Coast Rock BandAndre Pettipas and the Giants are set to release their new album No Fools No Fun on July 9 via all streaming platforms. The 13-track album captures the no holds barred, kick-ass ethic the band brings to everything they do, and like never before.

Recorded at the The Chalet Recording Studio in Uxbridge, Ontario, 10 of the 13 tracks were produced by Brian Moncarz (Alice Cooper, Our Lady Peace, The Tea Party), along with some other well-known rock n roll heavy hitters including: Max Kerman of Arkells(Saint John String Quartet) who arranged “Dark Times”, John-Angus MacDonald of The Trews (Glorious Sons) producer of “Sympathy Card”, and Jason Jenkyns (The Stanfields, The Town Heroes) and Jon Landry (The Stanfields, The Town Heroes) who co-produced “The Swedish Motel”.

“Everyone has enough pain and anguish taking up residence in their minds at any given time. For us, it’s like, let’s just forget about all of that for a while and have a good time.’ That’s what we do at our shows and that’s the approach we took to this album,” said lead vocalist Andre Pettipas.

The first released single off the new album “Sympathy Card”, gained ground at Rock radio reaching #27 on Billboard’s Active Rock Chart in Canada and breaking the top 50 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Chart in North America. The song is a damn the torpedoes, full steam ahead track emphasizing shrugging off adversity and not wasting time complaining about what you can’t change, but always making an effort to change what you can. In contrast, the singles “The Swedish Motel” and “Overtime” display the band’s ability to combine vastly disparate genres of rock and roll into a sound that’s undeniably and uniquely their own.

The album will also include the most recently released single “Homesick”, giving a major nod to late eighties and early nineties rock featuring Christopher Thorn the guitarist of critically acclaimed, chart topping, southern psych-rock band Blind Melon. Other standout tracks include “Last First Date Ever”, “Gone”, and “No Fools No Fun” – the perfect soundtrack to chase away the ongoing pandemic blues.

The Nova Scotia natives are already on the rise to fame with three #1 singles on nationally syndicated show, “East Coast Countdown” and showcasing internationally at Live at Heart/Sweden. They were also named Arkells: Leather Jacket Cover Contest Winner, were Casino NS Artist in Residence Finalists from 2016-2018, Q104 Homegrown Champions out of 120 bands (15k in prizes including the recording of our industry demo which led to the band working with Brian Moncarz), and Jim Beam National Talent Search Regional Winners (Halifax).

With their take no prisoners; live performances, stellar musicianship, and habit of finding grist for the songwriting mill in everything from southern rock to hip-hop and pop to prog, Andre Pettipas and The Giants are a rarity – an act who absolutely refuse to let anything take the fun out of their creative process and performances on record or on stage, and with absolutely no fear of stepping outside of the box to get their message across.

POET AND MUSICIAN MOOR MOTHER ANNOUNCES NEW ALBUM ‘BLACK ENCYCLOPEDIA OF THE AIR’

“Like a blossom emerging from between the floorboards of a slaughterhouse, Moor Mother’s music is an act of transcending a violent, intolerable present.” – The Fader

Today Moor Mother – aka Camae Ayewa – is announcing her new album ‘Black Encylcopedia Of The Air’, thirteen mesmerising tracks about memory and imprinting and the future, all of them wafting through untouched space like the ghostly cinders of a world on fire, unbound and uncharted, vast and stretching across the universe.

On the new single “Obsidian”, Moor Mother says the song is about present danger – “thinking about one’s proximity to violence. Thinking about violence in the home. Violence in communities.” Featuring rapper Pink Siifu.

Listen and watch the song’s new video HERE

Director Ari Marcopoulous added, “We decided to start the video in front of Alice and John Coltrane’s house. Nuff said. I could elaborate if you want me to. But it’s the spirit right there.”

Recorded at home in March 2020 at the start of the pandemic, ‘Black Encyclopedia Of The Air’ is the work of Moor Mother and soundscape artist and producer Olof Melander. As with any Moor Mother release, a multitude of instruments and voices flocked to the ether to create something strange and unknown, a time-traveler’s guide to the modern world.

Ayewa is also a vocalist in three collaborative performance groups: Irreversible Entanglements, MoorJewelry and 700bliss. Most recently, Ayewa put out BRASS, a collaboration with the rapper billy woods. She has previously worked with woods on his critically acclaimed 2020 album Shrines and on the song “Furies,” which was featured on the Adult Swim single series. Ayewa is also a Pew Fellow (2017), a The Kitchen Inaugural Emerging Artist Awardee (2017), a Leeway Transformation Awardee, a Blade of Grass Fellow as part of Black Quantum Futurism (2016), and Rad Girls Philly Artist of the Year (2017).

Last month Moor Mother shared the track “Zami”, a track named after the book by influential black and queer author Audre Lorde. “Voice booming through buzzsaw synthesisers, Moor Mother heralds the utter destruction of the oppressive present on “Zami,” kicking open the door to a future free of the tyranny of ordered time,” Pitchfork said in a review of the track. Liberating herself from time with a cosmic urgency, listen and watch the song’s video HERE.

TINY LITTLE HOUSES ANNOUNCE SECOND ALBUM MISERICORDE - OUT 19 NOV + NEW SINGLE 'SMARTEST GUY' OUT NOW

TINY LITTLE HOUSES ANNOUNCE SECOND ALBUM MISERICORDE – OUT 19 NOV + NEW SINGLE ‘SMARTEST GUY’ OUT NOW

by the partae July 7, 2021
written by the partae

Ivy League Records is incredibly proud to announce Tiny Little Houses’ long-awaited second album, Misericorde, will be released on Friday 19 November! Produced and mixed by long-time collaborator Steven Schram, the Melbourne-based quartet present a collection of fuzzed out yet intricate indie rock songs, through which singer, guitarist and chief songwriter Caleb Karvountzis lays his interior life bare and takes an unflinching look at the world around him, pulling no punches in the process. Misericorde will be released on digital, CD, limited edition light blue transparent vinyl & limited merch bundles and is available to pre-order now.

To coincide with the album announce, the band have released their new single ‘Smartest Guy’, described by Karvountzis as “an ode to foot in mouth disease”, turning the lens on himself & taking the piss out of his need to always have the last word. “It’s constantly getting me in trouble with people, but I just always have to have my little say and it’s not always a good thing,” he laughs. Watch the crooner-themed video below, complete with their signature TLH charm, starring Caleb and directed by Mike Ridley.

WATCH: ‘Smartest Guy’ by Tiny Little Houses

Tiny Little Houses have also announced new dates for their sold-out headline shows. Originally due to happen tonight, the band’s Sydney show at the Lansdowne will now take place on Wed 4 August, while their Melbourne show moved to Wed 14 July.

On their second record, Misericorde, Tiny Little Houses search for salvation through suffering.

“The idea behind the title is the only way to save yourself is through suffering,” says Karvountzis. “The misericorde, which was a knife used to deal the death blow to wounded knights, becomes this mercy that releases you from pain and suffering. It’s this concept that the suffering is good but also the ending of that suffering is good.”

It wouldn’t be a Tiny Little Houses release if it didn’t bristle with a heartfelt intensity and Misericorde is no exception.  Written in a period where Karvountzis was testing himself with cold showers and long stretches of fasting – “Just trying to be like a monk and find myself and some peace again,” he says – don’t expect a re-run of the themes that preoccupied the band’s much-loved debut, Idiot Proverbs. This time around, Caleb and his bandmates – guitarist Sean Mullins, drummer Clancy Bond and bassist Al Yamin – have bigger fish to fry.

Recorded in three, five-day sessions at Melbourne’s Sing Sing studios – considerably different to the log cabin where they recorded Idiot Proverbs – it was the first time the band had spent so long making an album and it allowed them the mental space to create the kind of expansive record they’d envisioned. Taking that extra time, while also challenging and trusting each other, has paid off in spades across all the album’s 13 tracks. Misericorde is the sound of a band throwing everything in their collective arsenal at a record, unafraid to push their sound into new territory.
