Wilson Blackley releases new single ‘Repeat Love’ (Co-produced by Sensible J)

by the partae April 8, 2022
written by the partae

Melbourne, Australia – “Alternative-soul’s pre-eminent shining star”, 19-year-old Wilson Blackley today releases his brand-new single Repeat Love which has been co-produced by Sensible J (REMI, Sampa the Great).

Having recently announced label, management, and booking agency signings with THAA Records, Ecstatic! Management and Select Music respectively, Wilson burst onto the Melbourne music scene late last year with his debut single Home (produced by Sam Teskey of the Teskey Brothers). Following his debut release Wilson received high praise from music media and notable tastemakers before going-on to sell-out his first headline show and soon after perform striking festival appearances at NYE on the Hill, Ocean Sounds and most-recently, Brunswick Music Festival.

On new single Repeat Love, Wilson takes on co-producer credits alongside the highly respected and creative two-time AMP (Australian Music Prize) winning producer, Sensible J.

Co-Producer Sensible J on working with Wilson Blackley on Repeat Love:

“Co-producing Repeat Love with Wilson was super easy, as he is so proficient on all instruments. A beautiful honest song. Wilson came to my studio and showed me isolated Stevie Wonder drum-tracks…. That’s all that needs to be said” – Sensible J

Wilson Blackley on the themes and inspiration for Repeat Love:

“Growing apart is a feeling that everyone can relate to. Whether it’s your friends, family or partners, I feel like everyone has had moments in their life of growing apart from the ones we love. I started out writing ‘Repeat Love’ the same way I write most songs. Pondering over melodic ideas for a few days walking down the street and humming to myself. The musical idea came first and then I started working on the lyrics. Most of the time I like to approach lyrics in a very metaphoric way but for “Repeat Love” saying exactly what came out the way it came out was the only way it worked.” – Wilson Blackley

Earlier in the year, Wilson Blackley headed to Melbourne’s renowned Bakehouse Studios to record two live tracks (debut single Home and new single Repeat Love) and talk about his approach to song writing:

Praise from Media:

“(Wilson is) fast becoming one of Melbourne’s alternative-soul’s pre-eminent shining-stars” – Australian Independent Record Labels’ Association

“This is gorgeous stuff. Fans of pure, soulful songwriters like Josh Teskey and Didirri need to get around Wilson Blackley.” – Dave Ruby Howe, triple j Unearthed

Wilson Blackley is an artist whose lyricism, musicianship, and artistry is far beyond his years, and possesses an innate ability to speak directly to the soul. It’s rare for an artist to release a debut single so powerful, but clearly, artists like Blackley are a rare breed.” – Tyler Jenke, Editor, Rolling Stone Australia

“Gorgeous pace, deft guitar execution, spot-on vocal nuance on ‘contemplay-shunnn’ and a wonderful reprise at the end with just enough violin to string us along. Hints of Teskey Brothers, Joe Cocker and Lucinda Williams. I look forward to hearing people chant “WILSON” during encores.” – Mikey Cahill, The Age/NME

Wilson Blackley’s next headline show
Thursday 28th April
Old Bar, Melbourne, VIC.

Soft Powder

by the partae April 8, 2022
written by the partae

What does it mean for you to have this collection of music out in the world after first introducing your sound across the first two EP projects and recent singles?

When I first started making songs for Soft Powder I kind of set myself a long term goal: to compose, produce, mix and release my own album. So honestly, I feel accomplished and kind of relieved. This album is the culmination of all of my influences and experiences, and I’m both excited and scared that it’s “out there” now. I’ve been sitting on some of these songs for a long time and now that I’ve got them off my chest I feel ready to write more music.

‘Somewhere Like Paradise’ – where did that name originate and what significance do you think it still holds with the album material today?

Over the last two years, the process of writing and recording the songs on the album became a means for me to escape from reality and find relief, and the creative process really helped me cope. The idea of escapism has always been a central theme in my songs because it’s something I’ve always relied on, and ‘Somewhere Like Paradise’ encapsulates this idea. The title track ‘Somewhere Like Paradise’ was actually one of the first songs I wrote for this album, and it set the tone for the rest of the record – it felt like the perfect name for the album as well. I think every song on the record has the same melancholic, escapist energy that ‘Somewhere Like Paradise’ evokes.

Is there any one particular track that sticks out as a current favourite (why?)

Hmm this is a really difficult question because it changes all the time. Each song is acutely personal and so they each resonate with me in different ways. However, the one song that I think represents the Soft Powder project the best is ‘Close Your Eyes’. I think it’s the dreamiest song I’ve written, and I like how it kind of has a meandering, hopeful energy, but it also feels somber and nostalgic.

What did you learn about the way you approach music, as a result of making this album?

The main thing I learnt about the way I approach music is that if an idea doesn’t immediately feel good to me, it goes in the bin, despite how good it might sound. This is probably an inefficient and impulsive way of writing music, but I have to be really invested in the idea or the song I’m writing, otherwise the song won’t go anywhere.

Do you think you would have done anything different in terms of the production or artistic process?

I would have used less reverb. I usually get carried away when I’m writing and recording music, so I should probably get someone else to produce my next record so that there is another set of ears on the project.

Have you thought about how the album is going to be realised live – that’s exciting!

I have given it a little bit of thought, but I still can’t decide if I want to play with a live band, or if I want to try and do everything myself, or if I want to exist solely online and not play shows. I once saw Molly Nilsson perform and she just sang her vocals live with a CD player playing her backing tracks and I thought it was the coolest thing ever. I am conflicted and I need to think about this more! If/when I play shows, I want to incorporate more visual elements into the performance, as the album is as much a visual experience as it is a sonic one.

For people who might be coming to Soft Powder for the first time with tihs record – what do you hope people take away from it when it comes to learning about you?

Honestly, I don’t really want people to learn anything about me, but I’d really like people to experience the same relief and momentary escape from reality that I felt when I was writing the songs. I hope these songs are a source of comfort for listeners, and that the songs prompt their minds to wander.

SPIDERBAIT ANNOUNCE NATIONAL TOUR + NEW ALBUM CELEBRATING JANET ‘SOUNDS IN THE KEY OF J’ – OUT TODAY

 ANNOUNCE NATIONAL TOUR

NEW ALBUM CELEBRATING JANET
‘SOUNDS IN THE KEY OF J’ – OUT TODAY

MEDIA RELEASE:: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, FRIDAY APRIL 8

Iconic Aussie band Spiderbait have today announced their national Tour In The Key of J, a run of unique and special shows dedicated entirely to celebrating the legacy of their revolutionary bass player Janet English, in support of their new album, Sounds in The Key of J, released today, alongside the official video for new single in nine years, My Car’s A UFO.

Their first headline tour since their sellout Ivy & The Big Apples tour in 2017, this distinctive set of shows will kick off in Tasmania at Albert Hall (Launceston) on June 3, before moving through Hobart, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Fremantle and finishing up in Adelaide at Hindley St Music Hall on August 20.  The band will also be appearing at Groovin The Moo Maitland, Canberra and Bendigo in April, and Valleyways Festival in Camden NSW in September.

There will be a Spiderbait, venue and box office database presale from Thursday 14 April 9am AEST before tickets go on sale to the general public on Thursday 21 April 9am AEST.

“Janet’s songs are special. And over the past 30 years she’s written so many beautiful ones, but also others that hit you like a lighting bolt. The Key of J Tour will be a unique show – like nothing we’ve done before – it’ll be us celebrating Janet’s work in Spiderbait, and also the release of the double album collection of her songs Sounds in the Key of J,” explains Kram. “We can’t wait for this tour to start and to perform so many of her songs live – for me personally, it’ll be very moving, and to quote Janet directly… fucken awesome!”

“Kram was going on about the compilation idea – and initially, I said ‘hell no’. I kinda said ‘OK’ to shut him up… And here we are!” jokes Janet. “It’s been a tough few years and music really got me through the lockdowns. I still can’t quite believe we’ll be out touring again soon and for the Tour In The Key of J, I’m super humbled and slightly terrified. I’ve missed that energy and that connection live music makes, being part of that exchange is one of the most amazing privileges.”

“So happy to have a tour coming up with my two best friends, especially to celebrate the Janet dynamic of our band,” adds Whitt.

The story of Spiderbait is an unlikely but heartwarming one – three friends from a small Australian country town taking on the music scene, and emerging triumphantly 30 years later, friendship intact, and now one of the biggest and best rock bands on the national landscape. Taking inspiration from far-reaching influences from all sides of the musical spectrum (everything from Slayer to The Bangles), Spiderbait took their fervent thrash-pop from their tiny hometown of Finley in NSW down to Melbourne and immersed themselves in the rich, fertile creative scene.  From there they quickly consolidated their status as national treasures, with their popularity spanning three decades with no signs of abating.  Spiderbait have released seven acclaimed albums, which have all racked up gold, platinum or double platinum status and have combined Australian sales of over one million units and over 500 million global streams.  They have also secured pretty much every accolade there is to achieve on the Australian scene, having taken home numerous ARIA Awards, chalked up a number one single with their cover of Leadbelly’s Black Betty in 2004, and were the first Australian act to top the prestigious triple j Hottest 100 with Buy Me A Pony in 1996.

Spiderbait is Janet English on bass, Kram on drums and lead vocals, and Whitt on guitar.

Tickets are on sale from Thursday 21 April at 9am AEST from www.spiderbait.net.au

NGV ANNOUNCEMENT: Top Arts 2022 now open at NGV Australia

by the partae April 7, 2022
written by the partae

Identity, the natural world and the issues of today are explored by forty of Victoria’s most exciting emerging artists in this year’s Top Arts showcase. On display at the Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia, the exhibition will present forty-seven works drawn from over 1,350 applications, in a range of media including drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, digital and mixed media.

Now in its 28th year, this year’s Top Arts exhibition highlights the resilience and creativity of young artists who completed their VCE studies during a global pandemic. Inspired by complex themes including isolation, societal pressures, injustice, time, home and the environment, the works on display offer an insight into the personal experiences of these young artists and the issues important to them.

Highlights from the exhibition include Arthur Foulkes’ painting A Party in the Closet depicting male figures dressed in feminine clothing emerging from a wooden closet, challenging gender stereotypes that restrain men from diverse expressions of self. Further exploring themes of identity and belonging, Amy Pham’s painting The Weight of Your World shows a plethora of hands surrounding her self-portrait, serving as a metaphor of the opinions of others that dictate how we act and live.

Daniel Ireland’s Breeze is a performance piece in which the artist, wearing a coat of blue and green tassels, dances in a contemporary and interpretive style to explore the beauty of freedom of nature and the threat humans pose to the environment. For Annie Zhang, immersing in the beauty of the Australian landscape provided deep inspiration for her oil painting Pastoral Xanadu: Outback Autumn which she painted based on a photo from a family trip. Similarly, Zara Blake used nature to assist in the creation of her series, capturing the image of feathers and horsehair on the surface of her clay forms in her work titled Ranges Close By.

Top Arts 2022 highlights the NGV’s strong commitment to arts education, as well as its role as a platform for emerging Victorian artists to express their diverse ideas, attitudes and beliefs. Tony Ellwood AM, Director, NGV said ‘In its 28th year, we are proud to shine a spotlight on the artists of tomorrow through the annual Top Arts exhibition. These young people are creative, resilient, and offer thoughtful and surprising reflections on themes that are both challenging and optimistic. This year’s Top Arts showcase will inspire other young people to use art and design to understand the world around them.’

Top Arts 2022 will be on display from 17 March – 24 July 2022 at The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia, Federation Square, Flinders St &, Russell St, Melbourne. Free entry. Further information is available via the NGV website: https://www.ngv.vic.gov.au/exhibition/top-arts-2022/

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Michael Franti has long been revered for his inspiring music, worldwide philanthropic efforts and the power of optimism. Deemed by NPR as “equal parts musician and activist,” Franti continues to offer opportunities for gratitude, solidarity and celebrating how we get through the greatest ups and downs of our lives with our body, mind and soul still in one piece with his upcoming album Follow Your Heart, set for release June 3 via Thirty Tigers / Cooking Vinyl Australia. Pre-order/pre-save the album HERE.

“One thing I learned these last couple of years is that people need people,” shares Franti. “I wrote many songs about connection, resilience and finding the light, even in the midst of all the crazy. Somewhere in there we find resilience, and I hope Follow Your Heart gives fans the courage to continue looking for and holding onto that perseverance.”

Along with today’s announcement, Franti & Spearhead release “Brighter Day,” an anthemic call to endure life’s hardships, to find resolve and strength in those around you and stick around for brighter days ahead:

Don’t give up when your heart is weary
Don’t give up when your eyes are teary
Don’t give up when your voice is trembling
When your life needs mending

Don’t give up when the hurt is near you
Don’t give up when the world seems to be broken
I’m still hoping with my heart open
For a brighter day

Don’t give up when your pride is bruised
And don’t give up when you fear you’re losing
Don’t give up in your darkest hour
‘Cause you got that power

Don’t give up when you feel divided
Don’t give up, I’ll be by your side
I’m broken
I’m still hoping with my heart open
For a brighter day

And if you stay with me
I will stay with you
For a brighter day

Today’s release follows lead single “Good Day For A Good Day,” which marked the band’s 10th Top 25 AAA hit. Joining “Good Day LA” to chat about and perform the song live in-studio, Franti shared that the song is “speaking to the fact that sometimes we have to retune our minds to feel like we can have a good day, because we’re not always going to get one. Not every day is perfect, but we can retune our minds to find those good days and good moments.”

Following numerous sold out shows and a triumphant return to Red Rocks Amphitheatre last year, Franti & Spearhead are preparing to reunite with Soulrockers across North America this summer with the Follow Your Heart World Tour, kicking off May 13, performing nearly 40 shows with plans to announce additional dates. Tickets are on sale now at MichaelFranti.com, with the option to upgrade to VIP for many of the dates.

Franti launched a virtual event revolution in June 2020 with his Stay At Home Concert World Tour, a creation prompted by his first summer in 33 years in which he wasn’t on the road due to the global pandemic, performing for over 50,000 fans worldwide with seven uniquely themed virtual livestreams. To better connect with his Soulrocker community, Franti developed a dual-screen model, allowing fans to join a “Backstage Zoom Party Room” and interact directly with one another. Franti is set to host his Brighter Day Livestream on Friday, April 22 at 9pm ET/6pm PT.

Work Hard And Be Nice, Franti & Spearhead’s 11th studio album, was released in 2020, which included lead single “I Got You,” the band’s first Billboard No. 1 in nearly 10 years, and was also featured on NPR’s mid-year and end-year “Heavy Rotation: Public Radio’s Most Popular Songs of 2020,” sharing, “Michael Franti’s infectious groove is unmistakable. From the opening chords to the percolating rhythm, it’s easy to get caught up in the positivity he exudes.”

  2. Better
  3. Baby Let Your Soulshine

Circle

written by the partae

Where are you currently based?

Enmore, NSW, Australia. Which shares the same postcode as Newtown. Why do they make suburbs share postcodes sometimes? The lesser of the two always knows who they are and carry around an inferiority complex for the entire existence. I’m going to print some t-shirts that say Free Enmore and see where that gets us.

What’s been happening recently?

Mostly it’s work and recalibrating to a new normal after lockdowns and the restrictions that impacted how we work. Anything related to music falls just a little outside of that so even though it’s ‘work’ I’m writing these answers at 6:12 am so that I can get to work on time!

You have an album on the way, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

The sound wasn’t directly influenced by anyone or anything but it’s nothing new insofar as it’s an album driven primarily by simple acoustic guitar. The sound is a little different to works we’ve previously produced because the four track tape machine was front and center on every song. The songwriting itself all came about in a couple of weeks in December 2020 during a particularly dull lockdown period.

How did you go about writing this album?

Songs that are easy to write are the most fun to write and also the easiest to finish. You seem to open a channel for truth (or at least relative truth) and it pours out of you. To keep with the water analogy, I’m still unsure how you control or if you even have any control of how open the tap is. These songs were easy to write and easy to finish and so hopefully honest and resonant.

What does this forthcoming album mean to you?

Every song on the record is a person’s name and someone that is known quite well to us. Al, Lucy, Helen, Dan, Tam, Sid, Eddie, Katherine, Mac and Nadia. There’s a couple of less common names there but it’s interesting to point out that almost everyone has an Al or a Lucy or a Dan in their lives. They started as songs specific about the people but then grew and blossomed into archetypal concepts that we hope people can relate to and enjoy.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with?

The songs were all recorded at Enmore Audio during 2022. Because of the concept that we wanted everything to be tracked to cassette it was useful having Owen Pengliss here as recording engineer; he loves analog gear and was more than up for the challenge. Noah Church played quite a few of the electric guitars and whenever there’s drums that’s most likely Owen. We mixed the album as a team over several months and also mastered the tracks at Enmore Audio.

What programs/equipment did you use?

A couple of our favorite mics were across pretty much everything. A Neumann M147 and an AKG c414 were up and ready to go at every tracking session. They went through one of either of our UA6167 channel strips and then straight into our four track Tascam. Those takes were then bounced and lined up in Pro Tools for mixing.

Your sound has moved in a new direction, what prompted this?

It’s more of a concept sound inspired by the limitations of lockdown and something we just wanted to explore for a very long time. We’ll almost certainly go back to the production style found on Another 69 Love Songs Part 1. After all, we’ve committed ourselves to producing part 2 and 3 at some point! Of course if the world absolutely loves

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Destroyer’s new album Labyrinthitis. Which after typing out for the first time I realise is a real word and after a quick Google search realise it’s a condition of the ear! I hope that doesn’t mean our good friend Destroyer has Labyrinthitis?! Anyway, an album well worth checking out.

What’s planned for 2022?

Music wise, Circle has been collaborating with quite a few artists and we’re in two minds as to whether or not it’s okay to release some of these tunes while we’re in an album cycle. It can quite often be a two year cycle between writing a track and having the material out there in the world so tossing up the notion of a new paradigm where it’s totally okay to drop singles left and right regardless of the album cycle you might find yourself in.

Sarah MK ‘Mittos’ Premiere

by the partae April 7, 2022
written by the partae

Canadian singer-songwriter Sarah MK strikes the balance between message and music with graceful mastery. Seamlessly alternating from slow-burning R&B to full-blown MC, she has an impressive sonic versatility, characterized by fine-tuned lyrics over warm, soulful backdrops.

Sarah is an Université de Montréal alumni, with a bachelor’s degree in Jazz vocals. She independently released her 2011 debut “Worth It” to widespread acclaim from music critics and fans alike, becoming a sought-after collaborator at home and abroad. She’s worked with the likes of local legends Dubmatique, virtuoso pianist Anomalie, family-oriented trio Brown and emblematic RapKeb group Dead Obies, among countless others. MK has extensively toured North America and Europe, whether at international festivals performing as a soloist or in support of such highly regarded acts as the incomparable Fred Wesley, Canadian rapper Socalled and world-renowned clarinetist David Krakauer for the funk-klezmer hybrid project Abraham Inc.

Her new album Wax & Gold marks a return to form for the visionary songstress. Reminiscing on a chance encounter with mega-impresario Scooter Braun where her sonic aesthetic was brought into question, Sarah found herself at a personal and professional crossroads. Considering the current R&B climate, she originally sought a more folk-oriented direction. This marks the beginning of her ongoing collaboration with multi-instrumentalist Christopher Cargnello, who along with MK co-produced the album. The core of her band, composed of keyboardist Caulder Nash, drummer Anthony Pageot and bassist Jonathan Lorgis was first assembled during a local Jazz bar residency in 2017. The bulk of the material is a byproduct of the synergy that was born of those rehearsals, one that can only be achieved through jam sessions with live musicians in flow state. Sarah wrote 8 out of the project’s 10 songs during a 3-month creative outburst in 2018. About the impetus to compile her album, she says: “I went in with the intention of ‘let’s play together'”. The formation is completed by a horn section made up of Andy King, Alexandre Dion, Christopher Vincent and Rachel Therrien.

She addresses a wide array of themes, such as in the nostalgic “Hey Richard”, a song about an involuntarily estranged friendship, or the tongue-in-cheek “Pancakes For Supper” a syrupy Funk number co-written by Salin Cheewapansri on the drums. Sarah’s all-star assembly of artists and musicians helps bring her songs to life, enlisting recording artist Clerel and co-writer Judith Little to assist on vocals as well as Caro Dupont, who plays the flute on “Goodbye”.

Sarah’s acoustic sojourn eventually gave way to a full-circle moment where she fully embraced the Neo-Soul that informs and inspires her to this day. On reconnecting with her live music roots, she concludes: “You’ll find me at my best on stage.”

Nuela Charles

by the partae April 7, 2022
written by the partae

Where are you currently based?

I am an artist based in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. I have been here for the last 13 years, and have loved developing as an artist here.

How did you first start playing music?

I first started playing music because my dad had an acoustic guitar in the house. I taught myself how to play using tabs from popular songs, and eventually started writing my own songs.

What’s been happening recently?

Recently I was awarded the SOCAN Foundation HER Award. It is an award given out to two female-identifying artists in all of Canada for their accomplishments within their careers. It was really cool and I was very honoured.

Your new single ‘Awakening’ will be released on April 1, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

“Awakening” is one of those songs that went through the most work to get to where it ended up. It started out as more of a downtempo afrobeat song, but definitely evolved into this anthem about standing in your light and owning your space.

How did you go about writing ‘Awakening’?

When I started writing “Awakening” I had the verses all flushed out already. It was more of a rap sing kind of feel, that I haven’t really explored before. And then when we finally figured out the feel of the song and the chorus, the lyrics and melody came and fit in there so well.

Where and when did you record/produce/master?

I started the song in my apartment in September 2021, but then went to Los Angeles in October to finish working on it with producer Matt Parad (Selah Sue, Will Joseph Cook). We did a bunch of songs together over a 2-week span, and then I had it mastered in Toronto, by Grammy-nominated João Carvalho.

How did you approach the recording process?

With this project I was very hands on. Everything started from an inspiration nugget that I started by myself, and usually ended up writing the first verse and chorus. And then once I was confident in that I would send it to my producer, and he would flush out the production, and give me a song structure to allow me to finish writing the lyrics. We definitely got the songs mostly done, before I went to LA to record lead vocals and finish production. I then recorded the backing vocals in my apartment when I got back home in November. The rest was such a blur but it was all mixed and mastered by mid-December.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

My usual go to’s are Nothing but Thieves or Sam Fender, but I have a Spotify playlist that I updated each month, with new discoveries and songs that I’m loving. At the top of that list currently are Young Franco feat Pell, Sycco, Royce Wood Junior and Wolf Alice to name a few.

What do you like to do away from music?

To be honest this is something that I am working on – actually having a life outside of music. However, I really enjoy watching movies, or being outside on my grandparent’s farm with their horses.

What’s planned for 2022?

2022 is going to be filled with tons of new music! I’m super excited to be able to kick off this new era of Nuela Charles songs that are the most reflective of who I am as a person and an artist.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

Fave food would definitely be Mexican. And I really like hanging out at home – is that weird? If I’m not working – I like to chill because I know how it feels to be super busy and always on the go, and I’m definitely slowly heading into that season, so I’ll take couch nights while I can!

Star on the rise Tasman Keith today shares ‘CHEQUE‘, a noxious collaboration with six-time ARIA Award winner Genesis Owusu, lifted from Keith’s upcoming debut album A Colour Undone out this July 8 via AWAL. LISTEN + WATCH HERE.

‘CHEQUE‘ picks up the boastful swagger of previous release ‘5FT FREESTYLE‘, which saw Keith debut one of two personas whose journey will unfold through A Colour Undone. ‘CHEQUE‘ sees the reappearance of an insolent, devilish ego that thrives on self-indulgence and conceit. What begins as a stripped-back gospel service rapidly snaps into fury – ruminating on the need for a saviour, for “someone that’s going to come down to this earth and just do something for us,” salvation arrives through a steadfast beat-switch. Here Tasman and Genesis share a wrath as unapologetic and vicious as Pusha T and No Malice, be it Keith‘s remark “I told her watch em ego trip, I bust their ego lip” or Owusu‘s “You put your name next to mine, the audacity.”

In Tasman‘s words, “CHEQUE’ is the continuation of the character introduced in ‘5FT FREESTYLE’ split into two parts, the abrasive ego and then the controlled version of that ego. Lyrically it’s just having something to say over some crazy production. I called Genesis and told him I had a joint for him to talk his shit on… a few weeks later he rolled through and locked in the verse.“ Genesis Owusu shares, “Tasman specifically told me to flex. Talk that talk. The weirdo shit is cool but it’s time to rap.”

The visuals of ‘CHEQUE‘ are made up of two parts; The first represents the suppression of an abrasive ego and the elimination of superficial tendencies through destroying facades and false perceptions of one’s own individualism (the destruction of the television & the burying of Tasman’s ego). The second explores accepting one’s individuality through success and revelling in it (showcased in the laissez-faire, stylistic direction during the second half of the video).

Of the video, director Zain Ayub shares, “Tasman is so committed to his craft and his vision that it was an amicable and exciting discussion we had to explore the ideas for Cheque; his openness allowed the idea to flourish. After brainstorming independently, the idea of burying Tasman alive was born and we filmed the destruction of the television and the grave shot on the same day we filmed 5FT Freestyle in Bowraville. Initially, I wrote a narrative-driven concept that would showcase both Tasman and Genesis in a new light: confronting their own alter-egos, in a darker setting, however, this evolved into a simpler approach to the video. Instead of tackling a narrative/conceptual idea, I felt it was apt to lean into the ‘fun’ nature of the sonics. Focusing on a playful yet serious direction that showcased more personality complimented both artists in this piece. Tasteful, simple and bold.”

‘CHEQUE‘ arrives on the heels of ‘LOVE TOO SOON‘, a soulful jam from Keith immediately embraced by iHeartRadio, The Edge 96.1FM, triple j, Rolling Stone, NME, MTV, RAGE and clamour to the local music industry alike, including appearances at the Sydney Kings half-time show at Qudos Bank Arena and the Mulubinba / Newcastle Entertainment Centre supporting Midnight Oil last month. Earlier this year, ‘5FT FREESTYLE‘ accumulated fever from Complex, Billboard, The Guardian, NBN News, Acclaim, Sniffers, Life Without Andy, Pilerats and many more. Plus this April, Tasman will embark on a series of regional tour dates around the East Coast of so-called Australia. To find peace at COLOUR LIVE: THE ALBUM EXPERIENCE, see all tour routing details + ticket links BELOW.

Tasman Keith‘s debut album A Colour Undone carries itself with a self-assured sense of its own gravity, ambition and purpose. Granted the full canvas of the album format, experimentation and emotional nuance find room to thrive, and Tasman‘s stylistic horizons move outwards while his lyricism narrows. With the majority recorded over six days and executive produced by Tasman and Kwame, A Colour Undone is the product of an irreproducible mind space, deft in its embrace of imperfection and devoid of overthinking.

Through metaphor and his lived experience, A Colour Undone ruminates on love, loss, trauma, healing and ego; as dexterous, clever and linguistically adventurous as it is moving. Tasman pulls himself apart, atomising the sensitive and difficult terrain of his undoing and the subsequent piecing back together again. As he unspools the threads of his own self, Tasman uncovers an emotionality and a sense of openness that has previously lain dormant within his work. At its centre, A Colour Undone revolves around a doomed romance, one that slows and, ultimately, brings low the unhealthy ego that defines the record’s opening stanza, propelling Tasman Keith toward self-reflection, reconciliation and, at last, clarity.

BIG SKEEZ ENTERS 2022 WITH DULCET NEW SINGLE ‘BANG’ OUT NOW VIA NLV RECORDS + EAST COAST TOUR THIS APRIL

to take notice. We won’t be shocked when he achieves this and more”

Vogue Australia

“A melting pot of style, resulting in a party-ready anthem”

“An absolute moment”
MTV Australia

Rising afro swing vocalist Big Skeez ushers in 2022 with his latest offering, ‘Bang‘, out today via NLV Records. LISTEN + WATCH HERE.

Through ‘Bang‘, Big Skeez continues to conquer new frontiers of sound. Looming through smooth, deep in the mix bass and sub, ‘Bang’ bridges his melodic afrobeat sound with soft and sensual RNB. Vocally, the release sees Skeez sing in a higher register than before, experimenting with autotune – here he trades the bright kineticism of ‘No Trace‘, ‘Where Yuh From‘ and ‘Up‘, for a darker club mystique. With frequent collaborator Swick (Capo Lee, Big Zuu, Kamakaze, Merky Ace, Tkay Maidza) returning to the production fold, the two illustrate Skeez‘s ability to foreshadow the path of afro-beat giants like Wizkid and Popcaan, with the enduring nostalgia of The Neptunes and Timbaland.

In his own words, Big Skeez shares “The song Bang is about expressing your confidence in whatever you do and letting people know that you’re the shit! Never listening to what anyone says and owning up and shining! The vibe of the song is chill, sexy and groovy and at the same time makes you wanna dance your ass off or could be somewhere in the club.”

Following his breakthrough in 2021, Big Skeez continues to excel – be it finding fans and support across tastemakers triple j and Unearthed, FBi Radio, Acclaim, Life Without Andy and others, including Spotify‘s A1 Hip Hop, The Flavour, Hybrid and Local Hype, alongside Apple Music‘s Fresh Finds, The New Australia and The Dotty Show amongst others. His features in Vogue Australia‘s Sound of Now and GQ Magazine‘s recent Dior B30 sneaker campaign affirm Big Skeez‘s position as an ascendant figure in the local scene and member of the nation’s next generation of artists, praised for his ability to support and uplift likewise African-Australian kids to reach into the rich histories and legacies of their cultures; shining a light on the triumphs of Dharawal Land / Western Sydney and encourage his peers to set triumphant examples of their own making.

Big Skeez‘s music is in constant conversation with his roots, whether they lay in Africa or in Dharawal Land / Western Sydney. This proud sense of being simultaneously from and for a community still pulses tangibly through every aspect of his music, offering a decidedly different light to the surfeit of music that is currently emanating from his hometown. With a childhood deeply immersed in the sounds of Africa, Afrobeat, Dancehall, Reggae and R&B, studied from his parents and “borrowed” from older siblings; the result is a wavy, melodically-driven Afro Swing iteration entirely his own, livelier, more vibrant and upbeat, standing alongside global stars J Hus, Pa Salieu, Burna Boy and others.

Following his recent live show debut for Phoenix HALO, Big Skeez has also announced a string of tour dates around the country’s East Coast this April. For all tour routing info + ticket links, see BELOW.

NSW SOUTH COAST MULTI-INSTRUMENTALIST JOE MUNGOVAN ANNOUNCES RESCHEDULED EAST COAST TOUR APRIL – MAY 2022

by the partae April 7, 2022
written by the partae

DEBUT ALBUM ‘A FLOWER IN THE WEEDS’ OUT NOW

Photo credit: Mikey Conlon (Conlon Creative)

NSW South Coast multi-instrumentalist, singer/songwriter, producer and APRA award nominee Joe Mungovan is thrilled to announce his rescheduled tour dates across the East Coast of Australia in April and May.

Joe will be performing songs from his debut album ‘A Flower In The Weeds’ with his full band.

“Well, we could never have imagined the postponements would keep coming… but nothing will stop us trying to get to you and play these shows. We’ve rescheduled the Brisbane, Byron and Milton dates and have added in an extra special home-town show.  Excited to get at y’all, hopefully in dryer conditions this time!” Joe Mungovan

Produced by Joe Mungovan, ‘A Flower In The Weeds’ features the singles ‘You + Me’, ‘Lemon + Lime’, ‘Soaking Up The Sunshine’, ‘Give Me Your Love’ and ‘Like That’. It was released on November 10 and mixed by ARIA Award winning producer/engineer Tim Carr (Matt Corby, Julia Stone) and mastered by long term collaborator Joe Carra (Courtney Barnett, The Teskey Brothers).

Joe’s debut album is one that has endured fires, floods, a global pandemic and love across international borders “December came and the fires started. I woke up one morning and could barely breathe as the smoke was so thick. I evacuated for a week and fortunately the fires just missed the house. I moved back down and then the valley flooded.  I lost power for 5 days and lived by candlelight. Summer passed and autumn arrived and the girl I met in Berlin flew to Australia to visit me.  She arrived one day before they closed the borders due to Covid.  We went on a road-trip up and down the East Coast and spent our days soaking up the sun-rays by day and drinking wine around the fire at night.  Unfortunately our time together was cut short when we found out that the pandemic was getting quite serious – the German borders were closing.  We turned the van around and headed back to Sydney Airport to get her on a flight home“  Joe Mungovan

Don’t miss your chance to see Joe Mungovan performing songs from his highly acclaimed album

‘A Flower In The Weeds’.

Joe’s added an extra special show “The Joe Mungovan Mum-lovin Special” on Mothers Day at a Spiegeltent in Kiama Harbour on May 8!
