Secret Sounds & WME present
GRETTA RAY
BEGIN TO LOOK AROUND TOUR 2022
BRISBANE | SYDNEY | MELBOURNE | ADELAIDE | FREMANTLE
Tickets on sale from 12pm local today, Thursday 14 April
Secret Sounds is thrilled to announce the charming Australian indie-pop artist Gretta Ray will be touring Australia in June, playing shows in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Fremantle.

When Gretta Ray hits the stage the crowd immediately feels her energy through her signature storytelling, warm lyrics and songs that take the audience through a journey of emotions

Gretta Ray started on her music path at just five years old, singing in her community choir. At eight she was playing the piano and by early high school she was teaching the school choir and band her songs. Gretta had her first solo debut on stage at a small Melbourne club at sixteen years old with an acoustic guitar in hand. Not too long after at just seventeen, her first set of demos with Josh Barber (Gotye) were released as an indie EP Elsewhere.

In the midst of her final years of high school Gretta won triple j’s Unearthed High and the prestigious Vanda & Young Songwriting Award in 2016 for her high rotation hit, ‘Drive’. During this heady period, she would often find herself writing essays in hotel rooms, sending them off from an Uber on the way to soundcheck, playing shows to 500 people and the very next day flying back to Melbourne to walk into class.

Her 2018 indie EP Here and Now was partly recorded in Nashville along with a diverse array of exploratory singles: ‘Re:Stacks’, a Bon Iver cover with Dustin Tebbutt, ‘Better’ with Japanese Wallpaper and her own, ‘Heal You In Time’.

Gretta’s latest release, the wondrous and empowering 2021 coming of age record, Begin To Look Around, chronicles the journey of a young artist navigating the winding lanes of womanhood, romance, heartbreak, travel and friendship. The making of the bold, layered and colourful pop album took place in Melbourne, Sydney and her adopted home of London with a stellar array of writer-producers working at the vanguard of modern pop. The result is a thoughtful, crafted, hairbrush-singable body of work that has seen Gretta nominated for ARIA’s ‘Breakthrough Artist’ as well as ‘Australian Album of the Year’ at the J Awards of 2021.

Get ready to sing the night away to Gretta Ray’s killer hooks and powerful harmonies when she plays across the country in June. Tickets go on sale from 12pm local today via secretsounds.com.

Nostalgic Events & Bunjil Place Presents: Rise Of South Sudan (R.O.S.S.) Music & Arts Festival, 2022

Featuring a curated edit of South Sudanese-Australian musicians, artists and creators leading the charge.

MELBOURNE, Australia. March 2022. On April 16th, Nostalgic Events and Bunjil Place will host the 2022 edition of Rise Of South Sudan (R.O.S.S.) Music and Arts Festival — the third annual celebration of South Sudanese-Australian musical and creative talent.

Set in the community hub of Bunjil Place in Melbourne’s South-East, this year’s festival will feature a line-up of thirteen artists and creators. From r’n’b and hip hop to neo-funk and rock’ n soul, for one night only, South Sudanese musicians of varying genres will take the stage, alongside poets, storytellers, dancers and performance artists.

R.O.S.S. was conceptualised in 2017 by Nostalgic Events director Kush K. T. Kuiy as a benefit concert to fund the building of a maternal and child health hospital in South Sudan.

While the idea that sparked the concept has shifted to the end goal, the founders’ short-term mission is focused on artist amplification and exposure, providing a platform for South Sudanese-Australian creatives to share their stories through their chosen artistic medium. In Kush’s own words:

“The idea for R.O.S.S. was born upon my father’s return from visiting family in Ethiopia and South Sudan. He was disturbed and upset by the state of maternal and child healthcare in our communities back home. I was an optimistic 20-year-old at the time, and while I didn’t know how to build a hospital, I knew I could put on an event to bring attention to the issue and raise money to go towards the cause. At this point, I proposed the idea to J.D. (R.O.S.S. ‘s creative director), who immediately shared my vision.”

The idea generated interest among Kush and J.D.’s creative and musical peers, who came together to discuss the specifics of the proposed benefit concert — the line-up, the name, the messaging and all things in between. Here, the acronym R.O.S.S.was established as both a play on their country’s name, the Republic of South Sudan, and as a manifestation of the republic’s social and political ‘rising’. Kush reflects:

“I love thinking about the origin story of R.O.S.S. because it all started so beautifully, with a bunch of very young people, sitting in my living room, talking about this dream”.

R.O.S.S.Artists;  Prez, Jacki Tut, Tebir

With a vivacious and growing South Sudanese diaspora located in the South-Eastern suburbs of Melbourne, keeping the event local was of the utmost importance. With both directors also residing in the South-East, it simply made sense to provide an offering that would cater to and involve the local community:

“As an independent producer, 99% of my practice is based in the South-East; providing platforms for local creatives to perform and bringing arts and culture to the precinct”, says Kush. “I want audience members and artists alike, to feel like we have our own culture here that we can be proud of.”

On the artistic direction behind this year’s festival, J.D.’s creative concept was inspired by the local community’s resilience, strength, and endurance, with the theme acting as a reminder that the only person you are in competition with, in art and life, is yourself. J.D. elaborates:

“We live in a competitive world, and sometimes it may feel like society has cast a powerful trick on you to constantly feel pressured to compete with one another. I like to believe that the only person we truly have to fight or face at the end of every turmoil is ourselves.”

The biggest and most considered event to date, R.O.S.S. Music and Arts Festival, 2022, will host an eclectic assortment of incredible artists, making waves locally and fast becoming ones to watch within the national music landscape.

Here, the uplifting melodies of AG Johnson, Jag, Jacki Tut, and Achai will enlighten and inspire, while lyrical powerhouses Nyareth and Flora Chol command the floor with their creative forms of musical activism.

On the hip hop tip, industry heavyweights Malesh P & Flexx will deliver their mindful musings alongside the artistic prowess of YTS Gucciboi and PREZ, the sonic splendour of Mike Wang, and the music-meets-performance-art of Tèbir and his band. Also on show will be the kaleidoscopic artwork of Mr Unique and A.Costa, providing vibrant visual accompaniment to all performing artist’s repertoires.

R.O.S.S.Artists; Achai Ross, Flora Chol & Mike Wang

Both Kush and J.D. proclaim that this year’s festival will be the most highly produced and considered yet. Kush continues:

“Attendees can expect a dynamic and seamless show this year. We’ve upped our game as far as production goes to include high-quality sound, lighting and visuals, giving the show an atmospheric element never seen before at R.O.S.S. Providing the best tools to ensure our line-up of incredible artists can perform to the best of their abilities was paramount in creating this year’s festival,” says Kush.

Kush and J.D are dreaming big at the prospect of R.O.S.S.’s future, with plans for international iterations and an eventual homecoming to South Sudan:

“Kush and I talk about taking R.O.S.S. back to South Sudan one day”, says J.D. “We hope in future to host bigger events and festivals worldwide, showcasing the amazing talent of young South Sudanese communities and the African diaspora as a whole.”

Mia Dyson ‘Parking Lots Anniversary Tour

by the partae April 14, 2022
written by the partae

Off the back of the 15-year anniversary reissue of her ARIA Award-winning 2005 album Parking Lots, Australian icon Mia Dyson is thrilled to return home to celebrate the belated milestone event with her east coast fans, albeit little further down the road.

After plenty of rescheduling, the seasoned Australian artist will take to the road this Autumn for a month-long tour across NSW, VIC, and TAS for her first live performances in well over a year. Tickets are on sale now and selling fast! For those who already snagged tickets to Mia’s previously announced March or November 2021 shows, these will be valid for the rescheduled 2022 dates.

“I’m sorry to say we had to reschedule the Parking Lots tour again. Everyone has been doing it tough during COVID, especially our beloved live music venues. I think this time, we really will get to play the Parking Lots album for you and celebrate the 15th (well…now 16th) anniversary of its release. I CAN’T WAIT to return to Australia to see you and play :)” – Mia Dyson

In her two-decade long career, Mia Dyson has been nominated for five ARIA Awards with Parking Lots taking out ‘Best Blues and Roots Album’ in 2005. She was the inaugural recipient of Double J’s Artist Of The Year at the 2014 J Awards following the release of her Australian classic LP Idyllwild, and has had four albums up for AIR Awards with The Moment earning her a nomination for ‘Song Of The Year’ at the 2013 APRA Awards. Mia Dyson’s extensive career has seen her support the likes of Stevie Nicks, Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt and Joe Cocker, and most recently touring extensively with her supergroup Dyson Stringer Cloher.

Heading back into the studio in 2020 to revisit five songs from the album, Mia’s Parking Lots (Revisited) EP sheds new light on a selection of her favourite cuts from the record. From beloved single ‘Roll Me Out’ to the stunning homage of motherly love on ‘Rivers Wide’, and the simple yet captivating title track to the empowering ‘Choose’ and heartbreaking ‘I Meant Something To You Once’, the EP captures the sheer musical mastery of an artist who continues to redefine the blues and roots genre, 15 years on, with the rest of her expansive career still to come.

TRP.P ‘Way I Like’ Premiere

by the partae April 12, 2022
written by the partae

TRP.P (pronounced “TRIP-ee”) has been breaking barriers since day one on the Hip-Hop/R&B scene. Composed of Truss (producer, singer/songwriter) and Phoenix Pagliacci (singer/songwriter), the dynamic duo met in 2015 and have been collaborating in music and life ever since.  This new track showcases the mastery of their craft, coupled with a burgeoning sensuality that they are adding into their creative process. This song was a fun challenge because not only have I not been singing lead for the past few years, I also haven’t been singing such sexual lyrics so publicly,” says Truss. “I’m a private guy, but the beat just brought that side out of us.” Phoenix agrees, “we’re rarely ever serious, much less overly affectionate in public. But I recognize that to be either is a privilege. Some people can’t even be affectionate in private for fear of being outed, arrested or even killed. This song is for the lovers, the fighters, and those who fight for the right to love out loud.”

In 2017, they released their self-titled debut EP, followed with their sophomore release 2TRP.P. in 2019. Their modern twist on 80’s/90’s inspired R&B gives way to powerful lyrics, which often champion queer love, justice and their communities. Currently, TRP.P is working on their second full-length album, which is slated for June 2022.

JACK DANIEL’S LIVE AT LAST TOUR ANNOUNCES SPECIAL GUESTS

by the partae April 12, 2022
written by the partae
The Jack Daniel’s LIVE AT LAST Tour will give back to artists, venues and music lovers all around Australia after a tough two years, with 100% of ticket sales raising funds for Support Act.

Kicking off at SolBar in the Sunshine Coast tonight, Perth psych rockers Pond will be joined by CLYPSO with her upbeat sound and stand out vocals. The vocalist, producer, songwriter and instrumentalist is a mainstay in the alternative electronic music scene. A sought-after collaborator, CLYPSO has worked with the likes of The Avalanches, Jamie XX, Neneh Cherry, The Magician and Kwame to name a few. Don’t miss her high-energy live show when she joins Pond for Jack Daniel’s LIVE AT LAST.

A fizzled-out Tinder date collided with a Gumtree ad, and from the flaming ashes rose The Buoys. The sweet and savoury all-female Sydney band will be joining Psychedelic Porn Crumpets in their hometown on Thursday 21 April. Provoked by workplace feuds, slow walkers on the footpath and a tonne of bad dates, The Buoys carve out a fresh space in the indie guitar scene, traversing the bounds from uncertainty to curiosity, disappointment to determination. The Buoys kicked off 2022 strong, placing at #85 in triple j’s hottest 100 countdown – an achievement that is just a small taste of all that is to come. Be sure to catch them when they play Jack Daniel’s LIVE AT LAST.

Wafia and merci, mercy are set to charm Brisbane when they join San Cisco at the Fortitude Music Hall on Sunday 24 April. Singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Wafia magnifies identifiable and idiosyncratic experiences in the form of alternative pop anthems. The gold-selling Netherlands-born Australia-based Iraqi-Syrian songstress relies on a keen sense of observation and sharp pen as she catalogs the world in real-time on her 2020 EP Good Things. Having kicked off her career with her 2014 debut single ‘Let Me Love You’ and 2015 debut EP, XXIX, Wafia broke onto the mainstream with Louis The Child’s RIAA gold-certified smash, ‘Better Not’. Clocking nearly 300 million cumulative streams, Wafia makes music you’ll treasure like an unforgettable memory.

With over 12 million streams to her name, a debut EP no thank you, no thanks, and press support from the likes of Paper Magazine, Flaunt, Clash and NME, merci, mercy’s star is well and truly on the rise. The young artist recently revealed her vibrant new single ‘Sick To My Stomach’, the effervescent pop gem providing another taste of her forthcoming sophomore EP due out later in 2022. merci, mercy’s catchy previous single ‘Winnie Crush’ reached triple j’s #1 Most Played Chart, received spins from BBC Radio 1 and ZM in New Zealand and received a shout-out from Zane Lowe for Apple Music’s New Music Daily. Be a part of one magical night of live music when Wafia and merci, mercy accompany San Cisco in Brisbane for Jack Daniel’s LIVE AT LAST.

Then joining Ruby Fields in Melbourne on Thursday 28 April is close friend and country-tinged indie rock artist Adam Newling. Since making his solo debut in early 2020, the last 12 months have been truly phenomenal for Newling. Releasing his debut EP, Occupational Anxiety, in May 2021, it was in September that the world truly realised his majesty, with ‘Sweetness’ arriving as his biggest single to date. The track was added into full triple j rotation, received over half-a-million streams, hasn’t left the Shazam Australia top 100 charts since its release, and placed #98 in triple j’s Hottest 100. This is followed by Newling’s latest EP, Half Cut and Dangerous. A snapshot of his creativity, the EP features  previously released singles ‘Sweetness’ and ‘Singing Blackbird’ as well as his latest track ‘Leather Face’. Witness Newling’s artistry when he performs for Jack Daniel’s LIVE AT LAST.

Tickets for all shows are just $10 + booking fee with all proceeds to be donated to Support Act.

Support Act is the music industry’s charity, delivering crisis relief services to musicians, managers, crew and music workers across all genres who are unable to work due to ill health, injury, a mental health problem or some other crisis, such as COVID-19.

The past few years have been tough, but a fresh energy is building. People are eager to get back to doing what they love. Live music connects us like nothing else, so let’s put artists back on stage and music fans back in crowds with Jack Daniel’s LIVE AT LAST tour. Head to secretsounds.com now to purchase tickets.

SHORT STACK ANNOUNCE MAYBE THERE’S NO HEAVEN ALBUM RELEASE SHOWS

by the partae April 11, 2022
written by the partae

NEW ALBUM MAYBE THERE’S NO HEAVEN OUT NOW

A brand new Short Stack album and some accompanying shows are undoubtedly a match made in heaven; and as of today, the pop punk stalwarts have announced an impending run of live shows later this month to celebrate their brand new full-length Maybe There’s No Heaven which dropped last Friday April 8.

Converging the trio’s colourful decade-long career with a renewed creative lease on life, Short Stack have truly soared to sensational heights on their fifth studio album, blending hooky bangers, sharp execution and searing authenticity into an 11 track masterpiece – and all entirely on their own terms.

Fresh off the release of their staggering new sonic opus, Short Stack are now set to bring the pop-punk frivolities to stages in Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney to cap off the journey for Maybe There’s No Heaven and pay homage to their beloved fans in a live setting who also played a large part in bringing this latest endeavour to life.

Also along for the ride for three back-to-back nights, kicking off on Friday April 22 at Howler in Melbourne before heading to Brisbane and Sydney across the weekend, fellow pop-punkers Paperweight and theatrical rock wizards Wolf & Chain will be bringing all of the the glittering grit to help christen Maybe There’s No Heaven.

Forged in the fires of the global pandemic, Melbourne’s Paperweight emerged in May 2020 with their debut single Waster, quickly snapping heads and simultaneously amassing over 60k streams in the space of a year, while also scoring spins on triple j, Unearthed Radio an Triple M Hard N Heavy. Following a support slot with fellow Melbourne pop-rockers Terra and a sold-out debut headline show at Stay Gold in Melbourne last March, 2022 is theirs for the taking, with a live show as explosive as their boisterously airy anthems.

Hailing from Adelaide, theatrical rockers Wolf & Chain wield rock-opera, goth and irresistible emo-punk aesthetics, commanding a cult-like following since their debut EP An Honest Mistake erupted into the world in 2020. Scoring Rolling Stone Australia’s Music Video of the Week in 2021 for the vampiric clip Taste of Blood, Wolf & Chain also released late last year a new EP Amor Mortal continue to channel boisterous chaos with glistening glee, proving to be continuously unforgettable both on and off the stage.

Don’t sleep on Short Stack christening their incredible new album Maybe There’s No Heaven in just a few short weeks’ time!

Since debuting in 2018, Matilda Duncan has been honing her craft both in the studio and on the stage, with multiple head-turning singles including 2020’s ‘Out of Touch’ and an incredible string of tours alongside Australian Indie powerhouses The Rubens and Ruby Fields, plus appearing on huge festival stages like Groovin’ The Moo.

Now, returning with her first release since 2020, Matilda Duncan is showcasing her full stylistic power in ‘PSYCHO’, equipped with big, echoing electric guitar moments and breathtaking vocals. With an intake of breath that comes before something important, the song delivers intense guitar notes alongside sweet strumming before the chorus arrives in a swirl of building percussion and unapologetic vocals that soar with a graceful strength. Known for her epic, emotional bridges, Matilda doesn’t disappoint as the track reaches its pinnacle amongst a culmination of pop / rock power, piloted by a voice that belongs in the spotlight.

Written during a time of evolving emotional maturity and stylistic growth, Matilda Duncan brings an air of empowerment to ‘PSYCHO’ as she realises that some people just aren’t worth the effort, as she explains:

“‘PSYCHO’ is for everyone that’s ever put energy into a person and realised it was a waste of time. It was a bit of a turning point track stylistically and emotionally, I was certainly growing a lot around the time it was written.”

The release of Matilda Duncan’s new single comes alongside the announcement that the artist is gearing up for her highly-anticipated Queensland Tour in April, supporting Riley Pearce in Brisbane, headlining in Townsville and taking the stage at Mackay’s Lamberts Music Festival.

Matilda Duncan’s new single ‘PSYCHO’ is out on April 8, and you won’t want to miss experiencing it live on tour – details below.

Byron Bay

A mate took me out to Eltham pub the other day and it has a great menu, a great vibe and a great selection of beers…. And beer garden 😉

Sydney

Low 302. So many memories here – all involving a stumble in after a show and having an absolute ball with my mates.

Brisbane

Bloodhound Bar A great pub with a music venue upstairs. Many a night on the red vinos were had at this bar in the valley.

Can’t beat the Star Hotel – a simple, no frills, aussie pub. Doesn’t get any better.

Bulli

Franks Wild Years – the perfect place to enjoy an afternoon drink and also browse through some records (might be able to find a copy of my record in there ;))

Do You Want Me? Reckless Coast Wants to Know A Bold Single For A New Era

by the partae April 11, 2022
written by the partae

With a sonic tonality like a spring-time magpie, the new Reckless Coast single “Do You Want Me?”, presents a modern euphoria that reminisces on Australian Rock nostalgia.

Released today on all platforms, “Do You Want Me” was originally born as a shout out for creatives stuck in a job they hate just to make ends meet, and was written on shift behind a bar by front man Jaeden Ogston:

“I was sick of it that night… running around collecting glasses, handling the TAB, trying to serve, all without any help in sight. I was often burnt out which affected my music, and I just wanted to focus on what I love. The thoughts going through my head on that shift pretty much wrote the song.”

“Do You Want Me?” serves up addictive melodic hooks for fans; delivered through an almost preaching styled vocal performance, atop of thundering rhythm and a gritty guitar groove. Whilst old-school inspirations are without a doubt present, Reckless Coast conveys the track in a completely contemporary form.

Stream “Do You Want Me?” here.

Hailing from along the East Coast of Australia, the now Brisbane based power trio previously known as Rude Rum renamed to Reckless Coast this year to signify a new era:

“The old name didn’t portray us properly… plus we’ve grown so much sonically and personally, so a fresh name was needed. We’re three kids who grew up on the coast, and love a good rock show… Reckless Coast sums us up perfectly”

With last year’s single “TALK” being the band’s most successful to date (alongside it’s sold-out Brisbane homecoming show), the power trio is rapidly becoming known for some of the most organic and energetic live shows in their local scene. Holding a love for groove fuelled rock adrenaline, Reckless Coast is held by no labels, and heroes a refreshing contemporary zest unique to them alone.

Catch Reckless Coast on tour:

April 27th: Mumbo Jumbo’s, Terrigal NSW

April 28th: Hamilton Station Hotel, Newcastle NSW

April 29th: MoshPit Bar, Sydney NSW

May 6th: Vinnies Dive Bar, Gold Coast QLD

May 20th: Eleven Dive Bar, Sunshine Coast QLD

May 21st: Tomcat, Brisbane QLD

SUPERBLOOM – THE BAND ARE ABOUT TO RELEASE THEIR FIFTH SINGLE, SMILE

by the partae April 11, 2022
written by the partae

The North London based Alt-Rockers have taken the opportunity of time afforded by the pandemic, and are set to release their fifth single. Having shown their versatility with the launch of an acoustic track at the end of 2021, which received high praise from several music publications and coverage on Amazing Radio, the band have hit back with arguably their heaviest track to date. Smile is a Hard Rock song that boasts an abundance of progressive riffs and rhythmic curveballs. Front-man Robert James says, “Smile is definitely the most technical track we’ve written. It was one of the first songs we wrote together as a band, but we wanted to test ourselves by creating something that was rhythmically unorthodox. Our heavier, more progressive influences really shine through with this one”.

The band’s song-writing has primarily been moulded by a desire to modernise the distinct sound of 90s Rock. Thomas Mitchener of Broadfields Studio helps bring this vision to life through the use of chorus, fuzz and other vintage instrument effects associated with iconic bands like Soundgarden, as well as contemporary artists like Nothing But Thieves. Robert says “I can’t praise Tom’s production enough. I’ve never known an engineer so able to develop an idea from raw concept to accomplished reality so efficiently. As Superbloom is made up of two core members it’s invaluable having another creative person involved who gets what we’re trying to do, and has done from the moment we walked through the door”.

Superbloom have 6 further tracks recorded and ready to release, as well as a number of demos ready for the studio. The band plan to continue building momentum over the next year with regular releases, before the launch of their debut album. They’ll also be out on the road later this year to further promote their music.

Superbloom are:

Robert James – Vocals, Guitars and Others

Sam Lidington – Drums and Percussion

PERTH’S SHELDON5D INTRODUCES HIMSELF WITH DEBUT SINGLE ‘RIDE WITH ME’

by the partae April 8, 2022
written by the partae

For artist, producer and engineer Sheldon Nunes, music and creativity has run in his blood for years. Working out on the West Coast of Australia, he has been part of the burgeoning and thriving community of local musicians and producers putting on for their city and as an artist, Sheldon has been making his mark, releasing music as the enigmatic Sheldon5D.

Today, he announces the release of his first release for 2022, a dynamic track called ‘Ride With Me’. A song that fits in the same lane as music by artists including Kevin Abstract, DUCKWRTH and Jaden, ‘Ride With Me’ is a great example of the music still to come from this exciting artist as he looks down the barrel of a busy year.

The song itself, written and recorded by Sheldon at his studio in Perth, has great late night energy about it. A hazy dream that brings Sheldon5D’s unique flow and energy to the fore, ‘Ride With Me’ is an ode to intoxicating connections and looking to endless possibilities ahead.

“You got that fire in your eyes I see,
Gaze at the stars on full moon nights with me,
Yea and it’s looking like Magic.”

Teaming up with filmographer Leif Logie, Sheldon5D put the emotion of ‘Ride With Me’ to visuals, also released today. Soaring shots and close roaming footage of Sheldon5D matches the energy of the song; as he describes, keeping the authenticity of ‘Ride With Me’ and also that of himself as an artist, was key.

”Filming the music video was super fun and organic; I’ve been shooting content with Leif for a few months now and I love how he brings my ideas to life. I tried to not overthink everything and tried to keep it  as authentic as possible to me and the life I live.’
Sheldon5D

The release of ‘Ride With Me’ marks the beginning of a new chapter for Sheldon5D as he prepares to introduce more audiences in his own city and beyond to the music that defines him as an artist. With more in the pipeline to be revealed, Sheldon5D takes a confident stride forward with ‘Ride With Me’ – stay tuned for what’s to come!
”I wrote ‘Ride With Me’ late at night trying to capture all the feelings I have been going through in the last few years of my life. Through the ups and downs it’s hard to find a constant, but at the end of the day all we want is that somebody to spend our time with and give us that ”Unconditional Love”.
The beat sets the mood straight away with smooth Trap Drums filled out with a dreamy atmospheric melody that captures a nostalgic and euphoric feeling. Music allows me to express myself in a way that I can’t describe in words. It allows me to be my true self and reveals all the sides of me that I wouldn’t be able to express without it.”

‘Ride Wit Me’ is released Wednesday, March 23rd

SET THE RECORD soars above adversity to release debut album ‘TIME TO BREATHE’.

by the partae April 8, 2022
written by the partae

Having faced a multitude of heartbreak & hardship in the time between releases, Brisbane pop-punk stalwarts Set The Record are back with a record that soars above all setbacks, seeing the quintet reach creative heights far greater than the sum of their parts. Produced by Troy Brady (The Amity Affliction, The Brave, Stateside), debut album ‘Time To Breathe’ is a hook-laden, & polished release that proves their place as a band that continues to strive for absolute success. Set The Record refuse to allow a single song omission from their recipe for catchy choruses, boppin’ rhythms and melodies that singer Angus Hiern delivers with pleasing, satisfying saccharine.

With ‘Time To Breathe’ out today, the band are also highlighting focus track ‘Give Me A Second’ to continue shedding light on the lyrical journey traversed throughout the record & shared across previous singles ‘Answer My Call’ & ‘Flashback’. The track builds with driven guitars and peaks Bec McCall’s desperate scream to be let back into the life of a partner he had fallen out with. ‘Give Me A Second’ is an anthemic pop-rock tune for anyone who has desired a second chance; a moment to right previous wrongs & misgivings, working to become a better person for those they love.

“‘Time To Breathe’ signifies a watershed moment for us, stepping out from the shadow of our youth to embrace a deeper, more honest side of ourselves. This release has been very considered… and it is very personal. Each of us have songs on there, or parts of songs that are real life. Whether that be heartbreak, falling in love… or looking at where you’ve come from or where you might be in your lives – it’s a release for all of us. We’ve put all of that into our music, so from that standpoint, it has more maturity and meaning to us as a band.” Bec McCall, Set The Record

“We played around a lot with our sound on this one. The track is about being shut out by an ex-partner, and the desperation to be close again, and it was important to us that the urgency and emotion builds throughout the track. We even got Bec on the mic screaming in the background on the bridge of this one. It’s got a lot of light and shade, and I think it’s a good representation of our more mature sound.” Ian Collins, Set The Record

Working with acclaimed producer Troy Brady in Buderim, QLD, the band were able to feel at home immediately, recording in their own state and close to all family & friends. This support allowed them to focus intently on the task at hand; creating a debut record that would encapsulate the Set The Record sound they’ve been intently shaping over the past 10 years. Bursting onto the scene with punchy performances and catchy, pop-punk infused tracks, the group found traction with their second EP ‘Above The World’ which trended at #1 on Twitter and led to radio play across the country. Future opportunities to share stages across Australia with The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, The Maine, Relient K, & As It Is followed.

“We recorded it at the end of 2019, start of 2020 working with Troy Brady (ex Amity Affliction). Working with him enabled us to honor our pop-punk roots, but expand our sound into a more modern space, and I think we landed somewhere really awesome. This is the most excited I’ve been about one of our releases.” Bec McCall, Set The Record

With a new record in their back pocket & a fanbase envirograted by the continued growth of the band, Set The Record are eager & poised to strike Australia with raucous, sincere and catchy new music & performances, breathing a fresh onslaught of noise back into the live music scene.

PRAISE FOR SET THE RECORD

“Really enjoying this slice of soaring emo. Hits hard and flies high. Thanks folks!”

Steph Hughes, triple j Unearthed

“Youthful, syrupy-sweet vocals demonstrate the boys’ impressive vocal range (an octave higher, of course) in well-orchestrated harmonies, cheerfully offering teeny-bopper songs, which the band puts forth in an undeniably catchy, hooky manner.”

The Music

“This five-track EP is cleverly crafted to have an early 2000s band tinge to it… a testament to the band’s ability to create catchy and thought-triggering pop punk”

‘Time To Breathe’ & ‘Give Me A Second’ is out Thursday, March 17th
