New Song ‘Break It Down’ From First Nations Band Tjaka Combines Didjeribone + Hip Hop

by the partae August 19, 2022

Previous Support Tor Tjaka

“In addition to bringing the youth perspective, and all of those intriguing instruments, Tjaka are introducing some serious reggae vibes into the mix with this debut single. It’s a statement of intent right out of the box for their sound, which is at once future-facing, a nod to where they’ve come from, and a whole lot more.”
(KCRW feature on Global Beat: Australia)

“‘Fiya’ was one of the first songs the group wrote, its theme of fire being hard to douse once lit acting as the perfect kindling for the heat Tjaka plan to bring with their live show and future releases.”
(Scenestr)

“Dang, I mean the title of this song really speaks for itself doesn’t it – this is FIYA! Genuinely one of the most interesting and original sounds from an act that I’ve heard for a while. So sick to hear the reggae, hiphop & electronic influences coming through, and the didgeridoo adds such a special touch, too. Keen to see you continue to refine the signature Tjaka sound, well done.”
4.5 / 5 (Latifa Tee, Triple J)

“This sounds incredible, and the energy that pumps through it makes it difficult to sit still. Really strong blend of hip hop and reggae, performed with such huge confidence. Love it.”
4 / 5 (Dan Condon, Triple J)

“Somehow feeling very laid back but also capable of making a party go off like a pot lid.”
(Tommy Faith, Triple J)

Stream ‘Break It Down’

A groundbreaking new blend of an electronic and hip-hop fusion combine with Aboriginal ancestral influence on this absolute banger of a tune, ‘Break It Down’. This is the second release from talented First Nations Meanjin/Brisbane-based trio Tjaka, due for release on August 16.

Tjaka is an abbreviation of Tjakamarra, the skin name given to the two Fabila brothers Geoff and Jake, who are proud descendants of the Jabirr Jabirr tribe in the Western Australian Kimberley. Together with family friend and guitar virtuoso Felix Fogarty, they are Tjaka, and their vision is to create music that mixes influences of the past with modern sounds and storytelling.

Their first single ‘Fiya’ has been burning bright across the Eastern Coast, with the group playing to multiple sold-out crowds in 2021 and supporting Kurilpa Reach on their Fat Freddy’s Drop cover tour. Also performing at Jungle Love, Mountain Goat Valley Crawl, Bad Olive and Concrete Jungle, Tjaka has rapidly garnered support for their live shows across the country and will continue to grow their fanbase with this exciting new track.

A super catchy, stirring hip-hop banger, the boys are onto something truly original with ‘Break It Down’, and when they sing ‘I bet you’ve never heard it sound like this’ – they’re absolutely right. The lyrics connect the Fabila brothers’ indigenous roots, and with some impressive rapping skills, command attention and give an instant boost of adrenaline. Featuring bold didjeribone swells, high-energy electronic beats, and a lot of attitude – this is undoubtedly set to heat up airwaves and venues.

The track introduces the use of didjeribone (a slide didjeridoo, similar to a trombone) into contemporary genres, along with the Face Bass, (a seismic microphone that is used from inside the player’s mouth) in an effort to honour culture through music. Tjaka elaborates:

“Lyrically and instrumentally, we aimed to draw the connection from the ‘old’ and the ‘new’ ways of creating music with the sound of the didjeridoo/yidaki. The overall sound of this song is one of the first results of years of experimentation with the didjeribone, the Face-Bass and Ableton software creating the ever-evolving ‘Tjaka’ sound.”

And that sound is certainly making waves. The group have already seen plenty of support from local and international playlists – including Original Storytellers, a couple of KCRW (US) playlists, as well as receiving play on Triple J (Blak Out with Nooky), Triple J Unearthed and Double J, as well as 4ZZZ, FBi, RTRFM and Triple R. On top of that, they’ve racked up over 45.7k streams on Spotify for ‘Fiya’, and dameeeela’s track ‘The Shake Up’ feat. Tjaka has been streamed over 230k times.

To celebrate the release of their showstopping new single ‘Break It Down’ which comes out on August 16, Tjaka will be playing 4 shows across QLD and Northern NSW – more information below:

Choir-Like Harmonies And Cascading Synths Collide In New Single ‘Fade’ By Skyuka

by the partae August 19, 2022
written by the partae

Previous Support For Skyuka

“It’s a fierce and focused pop tune lush with electronic grooves and this larger-than-life assertiveness, channelling names amongst Australian pop’s most exciting as she dives into the dark, moodiness of pop music – something we often don’t see.”
(Pilerats)

“With a little lick of jazz on the vocals, this opens up into a luxuriously dark banger.”
(Gemma Pike, Triple J)

Fusing together electro-pop, indie, and trip-hop with nakedly honest lyrics delivered in soulful falsetto, Boorloo/Perth-based artist/producer Skyuka is already making waves on the West Coast, ready to wash over the nation with shimmering new single ‘Fade’ and accompanying video out on August 19.

Praised for her electrifying stage presence, Skyuka has captivated crowds at Boorloo/Perth’s finest venues – Mojo’s, Rosemount Hotel, Milk Bar, Freo Social and Jack Rabbit Slim’s, and recently played at 2021’s WAMfest. Notably, her collaboration with renowned hip hop artist Bitter Belief for his track ‘Hellbound’ has received over 28,000 streams – a huge feat.

Now, she’s taking listeners on an introspective journey with her forthcoming synth-pop tune, ‘Fade’.

‘Fade’ does anything but, with striking, well-placed beats, a sorrow-filled melody, and choir-like harmonies that collide with cascading synths. Skyuka’s mesmerising vulnerability is amplified by the tenderness in her voice which instantly resonates.

A song that was first written 10 years ago and had been placed in the ‘too hard basket’, ‘Fade’ begged for Skyuka’s attention again when she realised she was repeating old habits. Coming back to it as a more experienced songwriter helped her to finesse it to its final form, as these feelings were inevitably revisited. She explains:

“I was young and naive and had met someone who only wanted a casual relationship. I was hoping I could reciprocate this only to find that it left me feeling completely empty.”
“It’s about all the emotions we go through when someone can’t meet us in the way that we want them to. It’s about losing confidence in ourselves because we break our own promises.”

This mood is captured in the accompanying music video, which was directed by Skyuka and shot and edited by Dylan Guy. The scenes alternate between stillness and chaos, and its dreamlike aesthetic matches the ethereal nature of production on the track. The use of lighting and colour was inspired by the fairy scenes in Disney’s 1940s animated classic, ‘Fantasia’. Of the video, Skyuka says:

“It was about capturing raw emotion and the spectrum of emotions we go through in relationships.”

The journey into Skyuka’s ethereal synth-pop world continues with the release of ‘Fade’, so get ready to listen to the track, watch the video, and pay attention to this rising star from August 19.

‘Fade’ single launch takes place on August 24 at Mojo’s, in Walyalup/Fremantle.

Darcy Doe Soars With New Shimmering Indie Pop Anthem Celebrating Sharehouse Friendships In ‘Fitzroy Baby’

“Pillow soft synth pop. Nice to meet you Darcy Doe.”
(Dave Ruby Howe, Triple J) [About ‘Burn Me Down’]

“Their electro-indie-pop music melds known sounds with new perspectives, creating a sound that feels familiar yet fresh.
(Alchemical Records) [About ‘Burn Me Down’]

“You’ve never met Darcy Doe before, but they sound familiar, and nostalgic in the same way a smell can ignite a memory.”
(Fusio Nostalgia)

Stream ‘Fitzroy Baby’

Effortlessly cool new Yugambeh/ Gold Coast artist Darcy Doe invites listeners to take a dive into their whimsical corner of the neon-noir universe from which they’ve emerged with lush new dream pop single ‘Fitzroy Baby’, an ode to friendship and nights spent in the courtyard of a sharehouse and the too-loud bar on the corner. This stunning track is out on August 19.

Darcy Doe has hit the ground running with their debut single ‘Burn Me Down’ just released in March this year. It’s a softly sweet indie synth-pop number that explores the tendency toward self-sabotage in moments of chaos, and the ominous admission that things often get worse before they get better. With this new release, Darcy Doe is bound to create a stir.

Painting from a sophisticated sound palette, ‘Fitzroy Baby’ boasts punchy percussion and broad strokes of shimmering synths, amid plenty of thoughtfully-placed embellishments that strike a chord. It is all at once edgy, intimate and enchanting, and every clever detail turns up the brightness to spotlight the singer’s earnest and beautiful vocals.

‘Fitzroy Baby’ is a delicately written love letter to the nights shared with your best friends. It celebrates that special level of intimacy held in close friendships that we honestly don’t hear enough about. Darcy Doe elaborates:

“This is a song about a house on Kerr Street in Fitzroy, Melbourne, and the people that were in that house. So many nights we spent around a little wooden table in the concrete courtyard next to the clothes horse where we talked it all out, or in the too-loud bar on the corner, or the darkened curb for secret telling and a break from all the noise.”

This is a secret definitely worth sharing – tell your housemates, tell your friends! The magnetic new track ‘Fitzroy Baby’ from Darcy Doe will be out everywhere to fall in deep, platonic love with from August 19.

Watch ‘0-100’ Music Video

Wearing her heart on her sleeve, indie-pop artist Madi Leeds from Naarm/Melbourne releases her new single ‘0-100’ with the accompanying lo-fi music video, both out on August 19.

Already a seasoned performer, Leeds played as part of Melbourne Music Week and Moomba Festivals in 2020, Sydney Fringe Festival in 2018, and has also graced stages interstate and overseas in Japan. She boasts an understated yet commanding vocal presence, delivering her playful and personable storytelling with synth pop sounds. The 2020 nostalgia-trippy track ‘Spinelli’ caught the attention of Push Records, and with their help, elevated Leeds’ music to new heights. Leeds recorded the follow-up track, ‘Identity’ with renowned musician and producer Japanese Wallpaper.

Now, she makes her return with ‘0-100’, produced by Hamish Patrick.

The simplicity of acoustic guitar alongside confessional lyrics in the bridge of ‘0-100’ create the perfect lead-up to a buoyant singalong chorus. Varied moments of instrumentation and cleverly crafted hooks put the spotlight on Madi’s storytelling here – the songwriter’s heart-on-your-sleeve approach to exploring a spectrum of feelings is honest and relatable, but it’s all pulled together with her signature sprinkling of playfulness and showcases her knack for making compelling bubbly indie pop.

Shot on a mini DV camcorder, the lo-fi clip was filmed in one take at the Parliament Gardens at night. The film clip has a very 90s aesthetic, and puts viewers up close and personal with Madi, as she shares her story against a backdrop of water fountains and purple lights.

Navigating the extreme opposites of highs and lows, the track explores the all-consuming feeling of self-doubt as Leeds explains:
“‘0-100’ is about the feeling of comparing yourself to others, putting yourself very low on a pedestal, feeling that you are never good enough for someone.”

However, those feelings of inadequacy are eclipsed by cold hard facts when it comes to media support – she’s definitely good enough for Triple J Home & Hosed as well as Good Nights, SYN, Triple R and more. Not only that, Madi’s music has featured on playlists for The Underground Stage, The Australian Music Scene, Pop & Indie (Lefuturewave), The Journey Home, Downunder Ditto, Global Media Pop, Global Money World, Melbourne Affirmations, The Push Office Radio.

And with ‘0-100’ she’s sure to take her bubbly bops even further – track and music video both out August 19, and will be headlining at The Leadbeater Hotel that night. She and her band will be joined by an eclectic all-Victorian lineup of JHM and Local the Neighbour.

ZZADE ‘Hollywood Ending’ Premiere

by the partae August 18, 2022
written by the partae

ZZADE is a 20 year old Industrial Pop  artist from Meanjin, Brisbane. Some  may know ZZADE as the former lead  singer and bassist of alternative punk  band The Blockades. With 10,000 plays  on their single “Ease”, Triple J airplay  and a notorious reputation of playing  high energy politically driven shows,  including the School Climate Strike  march of 5000+ people, The Blockades  were the most popular underage rock  band when active. ZZADE took a break  from the band in 2020 to focus on experimenting and creating a new sound.

ZZADE is now more ready than ever to introduce her matured and hard hitting sound to a wider audience. With energetic live shows and a live  band, ZZADE’s latest shows are not to  be missed.

ZZADE’s first single ‘Hollywood Ending defies the genre of pop,  combining signature fuzzy bass lines  with high tempo industrial drum  sounds and dynamic synths. Her distinct, compelling vocal style and cut throat lyricism brings this anti-scumbag anthem to life. With lines like “I hope you get your Hollywood ending” and “I never trust a man with a secret like yours”, the song is guaranteed to resonate with those who draw from similar experiences of deceit. With influences ranging all the way from pop queen Charlie XCX to 90s industrial acts like Nine Inch Nails, Hollywood Ending is the perfect potion of 90s angst and pop inspired melodies. Empowered and hopeful, listeners are left in a world where everyone gets their deserved Hollywood Ending.

DMA’S today share brand-new single, ‘I Don’t Need To Hide’, along with a captivating video directed by Lucy Knox.

DMA’S new material arrives as their first since last year’s celebrated EP I Love You Unconditionally, Sure Am Going To Miss You, which in turn followed the band’s highest charting album to date, THE GLOW (ARIA #2, UK Official Albums Chart #4 and #1 in Scotland).

Pressing play on new single ‘I Don’t Need To Hide’ (produced by Konstantin Kersting and Rich Costey), reveals an immediate and palpable sense of relief, as if a long-held tension has finally come to an end. With ‘I Don’t Need To Hide’, celebration and evolution is in the air.

Over the course of three studio albums to date, DMA’S have found an iconic, mythical status among their fanbase – 65,000 ticket sales on their last UK tour alone shows the open-armed response they elicit on international shores. Their world is one of acceptance, freedom of expression, collective high, and each twist and turn in their journey to this point has led them to what is a landmark single release for the band. ‘I Don’t Need To Hide’ represents the comfort in being embraced but more than that, it exemplifies the biggest talent that DMA’S possess: the ability to distil the wrenches of their personal stories into anthemic universal experiences.

Guitarist Johnny Took comments: “There’s a confidence you obtain when you find someone who loves you for all your faults, quirks and obscurities. They make you feel like you don’t need to hide anything from anyone anymore.”

The single’s video goes one step further in capturing the unbridled euphoria of what it is to enter DMA’S world, and the communal thrill their music brings to the live arena. It’s the feeling of emerging from a darker place, and the exhilarating future sound of a band without barriers at the top of their game.

Thinking about a better time
Thinking about a better way to love
So I don’t need to hide
I don’t need to hide

‘I Don’t Need To Hide’ is released on the heels of several large live music returns for DMA’S. Following their biggest ever Australian headline tour earlier this year – the last show of which will go ahead in Fremantle WA on Sat 1 October much to the delight of incredibly patient west coast fans – the band’s recent UK headline tour saw them sell out London’s Alexandra Palace and play to huge crowds this summer at TRNSMT Festival.

Later this month, DMA’S will take to the main stage at the Reading & Leeds Festivals before a run of October UK headline dates announced today. Australian fans are also in luck with the band scheduled to play Wanderer Festival in September, before finishing up the year playing Falls Festival nationally and kicking off 2023 supporting Arctic Monkeys at their sold out show at The Domain in Sydney.

ZZADE

by the partae August 18, 2022
written by the partae

Where are you currently based?

I am based in Meanjin (Brisbane), Australia.

How did you first start playing music?

I have been pretty musical all my life. My early home videos are of me banging on pots and pans and singing to hi-five. I first started writing songs when I was about ten and then started learning to play bass when I was eleven for the primary school band. My Dad played bass and I wanted to be just like him. I used to jam with my Dad and started writing songs and riffs on bass shortly after I started learning to play.

What’s been happening recently?

A lot! I have been busy planning and organising for this release, shooting a music video and making sure everything’s up to my perfectionist standard. I have also been recording new music and am in the process of finishing my next single as we speak. I’m always plotting and scheming something.

Your debut single ‘Hollywood Ending’ will be released on August 19, what influenced the sound and songwriting for this track?

I first had all the lyrics written for this song but no melodies or riffs yet in mind. I remember sitting down and purposefully trying to tell myself to be open minded to whatever ideas may come because usually I am quite judgemental of them. I didn’t have a specific sound in mind writing this song other than the “ZZADE” electronic pop but still heavy sound I had been trying to curate. I think production and the main bass riff really transformed the song into something I really liked.

How did Hollywood Ending come about and what is the meaning?

Hollywood Ending came to life from two things – a therapy session and a bad dream. Out of feelings of “life is unfair” and “life sucks” bla bla, I remember telling my therapist that I wished life could be like a Hollywood movie – where the good guys always win in the end. I remember saying the words “Hollywood Ending” and thinking to myself that it sounded like a great line for a song. That night I had a dream…more nightmare…about a boy I used to (unfortunately) be involved with. I woke up confused but inspired to pick up my bass and write a song about how I hoped he got his “Hollywood Ending”. The brain is a funny thing and although that dream was a shitty reminder of that person, I couldn’t be more proud to release this song.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with?

The original demo of Hollywood Ending was produced by Aaron Shanahan who I was working with at the time. He helped curate some of the poppy production elements and the base of the song. A couple of months later I took the song to my good friend and current producer Tom Megalos for the finishing production touches and mixing. It was then mastered by Matthew Gray.

How did you approach the recording process?

I walked into the studio with the song written and a few notes on some of the ideas I had for production. The whole song came very naturally and after about three hours, Aaron and I had drums, synths, bass and vox down. That original vocal take is the same take you hear now in the song. Tom and I tried to re-record another take but I couldn’t top my first one. My overall approach to recording the song was to once again keep an open mind and try new things. I tried not to limit myself by thinking things like “it’s too poppy” or “it’s not ____enough”.

Please tell us about your early days in alternative punk band The Blockades and how it developed your songwriting and stage energy from such a young age:

I had played in The Blockades from ages 14-18. In that time I probably played over 100 local gigs, a few sold out shows, and the climate strike rally of 5000 people. I think playing so many shows so young really helped me develop a strong onstage persona. I learnt early on to be able to feed off my own energy. Whether the crowd be 5 people or 50, I would be able jump around as if it was Madison Square Garden. I also learnt to observe the crowd and how different songwriting styles would be able inspire different crows behaviour. I now always keep that in mind when writing, I ask myself “Will this be fun to play live?” or “Can this be sung along to?”

Who are you listening to at the moment?

I feel extremely late to the party but the Yeah Yeah Yeahs have been on repeat this week because they just released two new singles that I love. I’ve also been vibing with locals Full Flower Moon Band and a couple of their new singles.

What do you like to do away from music?

I currently work in childcare and babysit so when I’m not making music I’m hanging out with toddlers. My class I like to think is pretty musical because of me. I write songs for them and play my guitar while they each shake little egg shakers I made for them. I also like to ride dirt bikes on the weekend with my family and am working on my jumps. Other than that, I really don’t do much of anything else but music.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2022 going into 2023?

I have a few more gigs planned already, including supporting SOAP this Saturday at Black Bear Lodge. I’m also already in the process of recording and planning another single release.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

Fav food is definitely nachos or anything from Netherworld. I have a lot of food allergies so Netherworld is always a safe bet for me. Fave place to hang out would be Black Bear Lodge or the studio.

THESE NEW SOUTH WHALES SHARE NEW SINGLE ‘BENDING AT THE KNEE’ + ANNOUNCE HEADLINE SHOW THIS SEPTEMBER

PRAISE FOR THESE NEW SOUTH WHALES

“No one’s doing things quite like These New South Whales”
The Line Of Best Fit (9/10)

“Absolutely irresistible blasts of insistent, art-punk brilliance”
Kerrang! (4/5)

“TNSW also make a TV comedy about being pathetic punks.
Very meta, except the actual band are great:
tight, no-frills, plaintive vocals, caustic guitar and thumping rhythms”

Mojo, 4/5

“The band is real, the TV show is a hilarious mockumentary”
NME

“Very rowdy, enjoyable punk rock”
theneedledrop

“Sydney’s most revered punk band”
triple j

“The best mockumentary since Spinal Tap”
Monster Children

“A punchy, infectious, and delicious piece of punk fun”
Nick Findlay (triple j)

Thrilling punk outfit These New South Whales return with their first release of 2022, the caustic new single ‘Bending At The Knee‘, alongside the announcement of a headline performance at The Curtin this September. LISTEN + WATCH HERE.

An art-punk masterclass, ‘Bending At The Knee‘ is These New South Whales’ painting from the darker half of their palette – a calculating rage that dials the mood to Turnstile via The Garden, hitting with the same punk je ne sais quoi that drives their hit TV shows, records and podcast; the same stuff that’s made them a once-in-a-generation proposition.

“This song came together very quickly in the rehearsal room one night,” said frontman Jamie Timony of the songwriting process. “Frank started drumming along psychotically to Will’s honkin’ bassline and we were off! I immediately felt like kicking a wheelie bin over—that’s when ya know it’s a good one. It’s also probably the most fun song to play live in our set, I reckon.”

‘Bending At The Knee‘ is staunch-riffed bedlam undergirded by vintage Timony lyrics: a snarling call-to-arms that recalls the band’s politically-driven You Work For Us era. Jamie explains, “I was channeling the confusion and frustration I’d been feeling the last couple of years—I was kinda gobsmacked at the willingness of some to trust the government all of a sudden; albeit in a time of a crisis. What happened to rage against the machine?!”

WATCH THE VIDEO FOR BENDING AT THE KNEE

A sharp new blueprint for the harder reaches of punk rock akin to their contemporaries Amyl and The Sniffers to Violent Soho, today’s new release is everything that’s made These New South Whales one of Australia’s most respected bands: punk royals and provocateurs for a decade and counting. Fitting, then, that the film clip, directed by Oscar O’Shea, might put the four-piece in a Victorian-era estate, a kilted Jamie Timony (vocals) cutting a brooding figure: hunched over a silver-cloched banquet; stalking grim halls; backlit in an iron-gated cellar.

‘Bending At The Knee‘ follows the group’s recent signing to Clowns‘ label, Damaged Records, and a string of sold-out appearances at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival earlier this year for their hit podcast, What A Great Punk, where the band made history once again, selling out all four dates within 24 hours. For all tour dates + info, see BELOW.

ABOUT THESE NEW SOUTH WHALES

These New South Whales — the band — are one of Australia’s most revered punk acts. But they also make groundbreaking comedy TV, and they star in it. Real band on stage, real band on record, deeply funny parody of a toiling band on screen. “The punk Flight of the Conchords,” said NME of their TV shows, “art-punk brilliance,” said Kerrang of their music. Their first two LPs, You Work For Us (‘Cholesterol Heart (God Bless Ya) and I Just Do What God Tells Me To Do, including hits ‘Nerve 2 Reverse‘ and ‘In The Light Of Day‘, were charged with the same frenetic energy that defines their live show, winning critical praise and legions of global fans who resonated with their physical, incisive brand of punk.

Their hit podcast What A Great Punk — an earnest, hilarious fly-on-the-wall interview series — has become a Monday-morning ritual for its devoted followers. And with the release of their new talk show-style comedy series TNSW Tonight! adding to an on-screen oeuvre that already boasts two seasons of their cult Comedy Central mockumentary, These New South Whales has matured into a project like no other. What began as a gag has evolved into something utterly unique: a multidisciplinary artistic universe teeming with lore and lols.

New Song ‘Break It Down’ From First Nations Band Tjaka Combines Didjeribone + Hip Hop

(KCRW feature on Global Beat: Australia) [About ‘Fiya’]

“‘Fiya’ was one of the first songs the group wrote, its theme of fire being hard to douse once lit acting as the perfect kindling for the heat Tjaka plan to bring with their live show and future releases.”
(Scenestr) [About ‘Fiya’]

“Dang, I mean the title of this song really speaks for itself doesn’t it – this is FIYA! Genuinely one of the most interesting and original sounds from an act that I’ve heard for a while. So sick to hear the reggae, hiphop & electronic influences coming through, and the didgeridoo adds such a special touch, too. Keen to see you continue to refine the signature Tjaka sound, well done.”
4.5 / 5 (Latifa Tee, Triple J) [About ‘Fiya’]

“This sounds incredible, and the energy that pumps through it makes it difficult to sit still. Really strong blend of hip hop and reggae, performed with such huge confidence. Love it.”
4 / 5 (Dan Condon, Triple J) [About ‘Fiya’]

“Somehow feeling very laid back but also capable of making a party go off like a pot lid.”
(Tommy Faith, Triple J) [About ‘Fiya’]

Thunderfox

by the partae August 16, 2022
written by the partae

What’s been happening recently?

It’s exciting to think we’ve actually got an answer for that question now! After years of, essentially, a hiatus through COVID and everything in between, we’ve been busy trying to regain our momentum touring and writing. We’ve played a few headliners and small festivals around the East Coast this year and have dropped our first music of the year with “Hard Times” to boot, so we’re definitely well on our way to reaching our former glory.

You’ve just released your killer new track ‘Hard Times’ what influenced the sound and songwriting?

This track was initially written between myself and Pat Byrne aka Beso Palma in his studio in Coogee. We were just jamming to be honest since we admired each other and wanted to see what we could create. We spent about an hour listening to 90’s Michael Jackson before actually doing anything so that definitely worked its way into the sound. Once I brought it to the band, we were able to imbue it with our usual cacophony of influences.

How did Hard Times come about?

Hard Times was born out of that jam with Pat. We just laid down a million layers of percussion and tried to make a danceable groove to just sit in. Lyrically, I love to delineate a funky, upbeat instrumental with a little darkness so, I did just that in the studio on the day and they flowed thick and fast.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who with?

Once we’d rehearsed the tune as a band and made some tweaks between us to make it more unique to our sound, we headed into the studio with Pat to put down the instruments. The song was produced primarily by the band with a few naughty home sessions to build the soundscape after the main elements were put down. It was subsequently mixed by our long time collaborator and daddy, Daniel Willington.

How did you approach the recording process?

We took the elements of what we liked from the original session i.e. the percussion and guitars and built on that structure with our live instruments. We started with Bass and Drums, then horns on our studio day and vocals, along with some other auxiliary synths were done at my place using the tracks we came home with.

What or who influenced the concept for the music video?

We’ve got a bit of a reputation for funny videos, bordering on completely ridiculous so, the general consensus was to match the darker tone of this track with something a little moodier to show a different side of the band. Jesse had been doing dance lessons so was in touch with a great choreographer in Jess Innes so he had the idea to just get in a room with our instruments and some sick backing dancers to do something nice and professional for once.

Where and when did you film and who did you work with?

It was filmed earlier in the year at the Egg studios. The video was directed by Nick Allen, shot by Matty Ower and choreographed by Jess Innes. We also were lucky enough to get our hands on some custom outfits designed by my good friend Romon Yang as well as some makeup looks by Georgia Vierod. All of the crew were friends so we felt very lucky to be so close to such talented, hard working creatives.

What did you most enjoy about creating the film clip for Hard Times?

For me, personally, it was surprisingly pleasant to put down the guitar and try not to make a fool out of myself in front of the camera without my usual on stage armour. Considering I’m a notoriously awkward and uncoordinated person, I did much better than I thought I would.

Any upcoming shows/tours – When/where?

As always, we’ve got shows aplenty coming up through the year. We’ll be hitting a few festivals like Relish Festival, Jungle Love and Young Henrys Fringe Festival which we’re so excited for and will most definitely be hitting a city near you to bust out a face melting headliner.

Please tell us about any new music that’s on the horizon?

As we SPEAK we’re whipping up a jam the likes of which have never been seen. We’re aiming to release in the coming months with fame and fortune following shortly after.
