We talk with Buffalo Paradise about their debut album The Kids Be Dancin’

by the partae December 8, 2022
written by the partae

Where are you currently based?

BP: We’re a Bondi-based outfit, though we grew up in wide-ranging suburbs over Sydney and Singapore – probably contributing to our eclectic musical influences and personalities.

How did you first start playing music?

BP: Each of us came to music from just enjoying it so much growing up and taking the natural step into playing ourselves, not to mention Jack Black’s School Of Rock that had a profound effect on our frontman Lachie. Most of the band have played their respective instruments for well over a decade and then came together early 2021 to share our love of music!

What’s been happening recently?

BP: We’ve just released our debut album The Kids Be Dancin’ and had a great night launching the album with all friends, fans and family, selling out The Vanguard. We’ve also been busy recording a heap of follow up tunes to keep everyone’s ears flooded with Buffalo Paradise goodness.

Your album – The Kids Be Dancin’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

BP: The album kind of resonates all of our diverse music influences and covers a fair bit of musical territory. Someone could listen to the album and hear influences ranging from jazz, metal, modern day indie rock and anthemic rock songs. This greatly influenced the songwriting process, as the band relied heavily on taking a musical idea and fleshing it out in the rehearsal studio – culminating in the changing musical ideas throughout each of the songs.

How did you go about writing the album?

BP: A lot of the songwriting was shared by Lachie (vocalist) and Angus (lead guitar) in terms of coming up with an initial musical idea, then this was taken to the band as a whole, given a structure, seeing what we found to be the natural emphasis when we played it and adapted to make it complementary to the band as a whole. That being said, there are a lot of songs on the album that were truly a collaborative effort with the entire band bringing the idea to the final project – whether it be from a jam session, or just a semi complete idea becoming complete.

What does this album mean to you?

BP: This one means a lot to be honest. For many of the band members this represents our musical growth in a band setting with much of the experience being first time writing/recording/production, not to mention delays due to lockdowns etc. It’s a body of work we can all reflect on very fondly and see our progression as a band, and we all really value not only the music, but the bonding, process and experience we all shared together to get this album completed.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with?

BP: We recorded at Ralph Street Studios in Alexandria with Aria nominated and all round great guy Greg Stace. All of the recording, production and mastering was done there.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2022 going into 2023?

BP: For the remainder of the year we have a bit of downtime from live shows, focusing on writing follow up music and hoping to be back in the studio by the end of January 2023. We’ve got about 5 songs already recorded and ready to go, but planning to get that number much higher in 2023 to get a heap more BP music out into the world! And in true Buffalo Paradise fashion, there will be a good few high energy, fun loving shows in 2023 for sure.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

BP: Again, the band has a pretty eclectic mix of influences. There’s definitely a very heavy emphasis on the indie rock bands in the Australian scene at the moment, as we love the work of all of our contemporaries (Pacific Avenue, Lime Cordial, Hockey Dad, Spacey Jane, Winston Surfshirt to name a few), but then there’s a whole range of other genres in there as well.

Please tell us about any upcoming shows:

BP: None official at the moment – but tentatively pencil in mid Feb. All our shows are promoted online via the various band socials, so they’re the best place to stay up to date with all our shows!

Favourite food and place to hangout?

We’re lucky to have had a good chunk of our shows in Newtown which has some pretty wicked cuisine… there’s definitely been some pretty iconic BP band dinners there in preparation for or after our live shows that we can all reflect back on as critical in the formation of our bond as a band.

We have a tradition that after each show we make a stop at Indian Home Diner in Paddington for a luscious butter chicken kebab as we make our way back to Bondi. As to where we like to hang out, the beach!!

written by the partae

Boris Brejcha, Brennan Heart, Claptone, Headhunterz, Paul van Dyk, Scooter, Steve Aoki, Timmy Trumpet and many more – The electronic mega-festival announces the first 25 acts for 2023

A brilliant 20th anniversary of the AIRBEAT ONE Festival with 300 of the best DJs and acts is coming up from July 12 to 16, 2023. The four-day open air event at the airfield in Neustadt-Glewe in Mecklenburg-West Pomerania bears the motto “Edition Home – Germany” and will be a bombastic setting for a groundbreaking event production. The AIRBEAT ONE has long since become a global player and plays as an event worldwide at the very top. Now the makers of the festival announce the first 25 acts for next year and they already are awesome!

The “Mainstage” every year is the epochal showpiece of the AIRBEAT ONE Festival. With gigantic dimensions of up to 180 meters wide and 50 meters high, it is the absolute eye-catcher, elaborately designed with absolute attention to detail. The biggest DJs and acts on the planet play here. True to the motto “Edition Home”, however, the first blockbusters come from Germany: Boris Brejcha, Neelix, Paul van Dyk, and Scooter. However, the AIRBEAT ONE Mainstage has always been a meeting point for the top 10 from the renowned DJ Mag Top100 Ranking and so representatives from them may not be missing in the line-up so far: Steve Aoki and Timmy Trumpet!

The music at AIRBEAT ONE is as diverse as the festival itself. From EDM to Trance and Progressive – from Hardstyle, Hardcore and Gabber to Techno, Minimal, House, Psytrance and Goa. Every lover of electronic sounds will find his floor here. The Arena Stage, which was added only a few years ago, stands for techno. And here, too, German techno artists determine the happenings in the line-up so far: Anne Clue, Claptone and SKIY. From Italy Deborah de Luca joins and from Switzerland the Deep House Queen Nora En Pure.

So far, the colors black, red and gold have been shining almost exclusively above the Terminal Stage. HBz, Lexy & K-Paul, VIZE and YouNotUs. With Klangkarussell a producer duo from Austria comes to Neustadt-Glewe.

The line-up on the Hardstyle stage is looking absolutely international so far. Some of the big icons of the scene have already announced themselves: Brennan Heart, Headhunterz, Noisecontrollers, Sickmode and Wildstylez.

Last but not least, the first artists for the Second Stage are ready. With Captain Hook, Fabio Fusco, Hatikwa, Mandragora and Vegas, illustrious names from the Goa and Psytrance scene will join the November line-up.

AIRBEAT ONE 2023 will be a festival of superlatives. 300 artists from around the world come to congratulate one of the largest electronic music festivals in Europe. On the guest list will be more than 65,000 visitors per day from over 50 nations. This anniversary should not be missed by anyone. Tickets? They are available already. The 3-day ticket costs 149.99 euros in pre-sale phase 1. For 100.00 euros more, you can be a VIP guest at the birthday (249.99 euros). All information on tickets.airbeat-one.de.

AUSTRALIA’S BIGGEST ACTS RETURN TO THEIR ROOTS TO SUPPORT LIVE MUSIC VENUES FOR: “SMIRNOFF ORIGINS”

by the partae December 8, 2022
written by the partae

Smirnoff Seltzer is taking Australia’s biggest musicians back to the venues that gave them their start, supported by the country’s most hotly-tipped talent. In a series of one-night-only intimate gigs hosted around the eastern seaboard, the events – Smirnoff Origins – will pay homage to the crucial role that live music plays in helping emerging talent cut their teeth, build their fanbase and become fully fledged stars.

Headlined by some of Australia’s biggest acts, the gigs will be anything but ordinary, taking over small live music venues to provide a stage set for exciting new artists that have been specially picked by the headliner to open the show.

The Presets are first to take the stage, returning to Sydney’s iconic nightclub, Club 77 on Thursday February 2, 2023. Club 77 played a vital role in the band’s early years, as the venue where they honed their skills as performers, generated fans and even made reference mixes for their debut album Beams (released in 2005), coming up in the golden age of electronic music in Sydney’s once-pulsating Kings Cross. Returning 17 years later, The Presets will host Smirnoff Origins’ first show with additional artists and venues to be announced.

The Presets are also tasked with finding Smirnoff’s hottest opening act, hand-picking an emerging artist to open their show. The chosen artist will also receive a $5,000 performance fee, double gold tickets to Splendour in the Grass 2023 (valued at $1,200), their very own feature in Rolling Stone magazine (valued at $20,000), and Smirnoff Advertising support worth $30,000, giving them a platform to be discovered.

The Presets Julian Hamilton says, “We’re thrilled to head back to Club 77 to play at Smirnoff Origins, a venue that was so special to us coming up in Sydney music. Live music venues like this play such an important role in supporting up-and-coming musicians and we’re on the lookout for an emerging artist to open our Smirnoff Origins show so we can pay it forward and create an opportunity for the next generation of artists.”

Lockdowns were particularly hard on Australia’s live-music industry, causing the closure of several iconic music venues in the wake of two years of restrictions. Without a stage on which to perform, many emerging artists struggled to hone their skills, find fans and make a living. Venues are only now returning to life, but they continue to need support to be able to offer opportunities to the next generation of musicians.

Club 77 owner Dane Gorrel says, “Live music venues feed an entire ecosystem for our late-night economy, across musicians, hospitality staff, restaurants, and travel. It’s about being part of a community that contributes and creates culture. We’re thrilled to host the first Smirnoff Origins and to be able to use the event series to shine a light on the live-music scene that makes Australian music so special and creates so many opportunities for the next generation of musicians to be discovered.”

Smirnoff Origins has been launched in celebration of Smirnoff Seltzer’s new Cocktail range – Spicy Margarita and Watermelon Margarita, both refreshing tasting drinks for summer days, and lively nights. As the brand that music lovers reach for during summer festivals and when enjoying live music with friends, Smirnoff wanted to find a way to use their platform to give back to their mates in the music sector.

Smirnoff Seltzer Marketing Manager Maddy Stockwell says, “Smirnoff is synonymous with music and the memories we create while enjoying live music with friends at festivals and gigs and discovering new sounds. These venues are such a big part of Smirnoff’s DNA, so we wanted to celebrate the launch of our new Smirnoff Seltzer cocktail range by paying homage to the industry that has supported some of our biggest talent by taking them back to their roots and creating an opportunity for an emerging artist to follow in their footsteps.”

Smirnoff Origins shows will pop-up all along the Eastern Seaboard, with the next show to be announced in Brisbane in January 2023.

To be selected to open for The Presets at Smirnoff Origins at Club 77, emerging artists must send a direct message to Smirnoff Australia’s Instagram with a link to their song on Spotify, Soundcloud or YouTube. Smirnoff Origins submissions close on Monday 19 December, 2022 at 09:00 AEDT. The winner will be notified by Instagram direct message on Monday 19 December before being announced publicly on the Smirnoff Australia Instagram on Friday 13 January, 2023. Entries are open to Australians 25+, terms and conditions apply see here.

Smirnoff Seltzer’s latest product drop is the newest innovation in the brand’s Seltzer range. Coming hot on the heels after record demand for margaritas – both at home and in bars and clubs – Smirnoff’s Seltzer Cocktail range delivers a taste of the much-loved cocktail, boasting just 107 calories per can. Packed with more flavour than a regular seltzer, Smirnoff Seltzer’s Spicy Margarita is fashioned in the Tommy’s Margarita style featuring Smirnoff vodka, zesty lime juice and tequila flavour, balanced with sweetness and a hint of chilli, topped with sparkling water. Smirnoff Seltzer’s Watermelon Margarita offers a fruity twist with a perfectly blended mix of Smirnoff vodka, sweet ripe watermelon and subtle notes of zesty lime and tequila flavour, topped with sparkling water. Unexpectedly bolder in flavour with a clean finish, the two new feisty flavours are low in sugar with just 2.5g per 250ml, 7% ABV and 1.4 standard drinks.

Smirnoff Seltzer Cocktails 250ml slim-can four-pack retails for $25.99. Smirnoff Seltzer Cocktails Spicy Margarita and Watermelon Margarita flavours are now available in Dan Murphy’s, BWS and independent retailers.

PRAISE FOR A WAY FORWARD (2021)

“They’ve delivered a true modern-day classic of the synth-pop genre.”
NME ★★★★★

“A Way Forward is Nation of Language at their best and boldest.”
Gigwise (8/10)

“The synth-pop band combine mannered singing, retro-styling and high seriousness to highly impressive effect”
Financial Times ★★★★

“It offers a subtle reminder that these art-school Brooklynites might have equally fond memories of 2000s indie-dance artists like Cut Copy, Bloc Party, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs as their ’80s luminaries.”
Pitchfork

“Let’s just call it. It’s the Album of the Year.”
KEXP

Recently announced to play Primavera Festival 2023, Nation Of Language team up with Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard for a remix of ‘Across That Fine Line’, the original taken from their critically acclaimed album A Way Forward.

A supercharged standout from the album, which the Brooklyn band has brought to The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Austin City Limits, Pitchfork Paris, a sold-out UK tour, and more this year, Joe Goddard transforms “a triumphant anthem” (NME) into an unpredictable, thunderous arrangement of synth and percussion.

“As someone who works mostly alone, it can be fascinating to hear other artists I admire reframing one of our songs,” says Nation of Language’s Ian Devaney. “The way they choose certain moments to accentuate takes me back to the writing process when all of these ideas were first stitched together.”

Nation of Language recently released a stark, seven-minute reimagining of ‘Across That Fine Line’ from Working Men’s Club last month, in addition to standalone single ‘From The Hill’ – their first piece of original music since 2021’s A Way Forward. While ‘Across That Fine Line’ captures the joyous panic of a platonic relationship flipping into something different, ‘From The Hill’ reflects on the times when friendships fall apart over romantic entanglement, further proving why band are “masters of taking the rigid confines of both synth pop and post-punk and expanding them outward, creating emotive, moving pieces in the process” (Consequence).

Having wrapped a month-long tour across the EU and UK this past weekend, playing dozens of shows with “cutthroat chemistry” – as Pitchfork described in the top six highlights of its Paris music festival – Nation of Language are now back in the studio finishing their third album.

From Brooklyn, Nation Of Language have made a name for themselves creating music from another lifetime. From signing to Play It Again Sam mid-campaign, selling out a UK tour months in advance, to the release of their album A Way Forward which came out last year to critical acclaim from NME (5 Stars), Financial Times (4 Stars), Gigwise, Pitchfork, Mojo, Stereogum, SPIN, and more.

After four years of releasing the odd single, the band were desperate to make a full album but due to financial constraints it wasn’t possible. It was only when Ian Devaney and Aiden Noell from the band decided to get married, they had the idea for people to give them wedding presents in the form of donations so they could finally record debut album Introduction, Presence. Everything that came after, was due to their own hard work, and the success of this album meant they were able to record A Way Forward. Guitarist Alex MacKay joined in 2022.

A Way Forward captured the trials and tribulations of modern life  — from the simplest forms of human connection to surviving a world in which political corporate machines spew a stream of digital pollution through every device. While much of the sounds on first album Introduction, Presence garnered comparisons to the synth-punk sound of the 80’s, with this new set of songs the band delved heavily into the Krautrock pioneers and electronic experimentalists of the 70’s for inspiration in the studio, stretching their boundaries in new and different ways.

The band have had outstanding support from The Times, DIY, NME, Pitchfork, BBC6 Music, CLASH, Gigwise, Consequence and more. Previous single ‘This Fractured Mind’ was on the BBC6 Music A-List for 4 weeks, with ‘A Word & A Wave’, ‘Across That Fine Line’,  ‘Wounds Of Love’, and ‘The Grey Commute’ being tasters of the album. A Way Forward has also received an incredible 5 Stars from NME, and an 8/10 from Gigwise, as well as doing a live session for KEXP.

With the first of many upcoming shows just added at NYC’s Brooklyn Steel, LA’s Fonda Theatre and Seattle’s The Crocodile in May 2023, as well as the band’s Primavera Sound debut in Barcelona and Madrid, Nation of Language will showcase their music for some of the largest audiences they have seen thus far.

“Sam has me suddenly transported from my home to the open road in the middle of nowhere, just flying down the highway on my way to nowhere. Bring it on!”

“Eventide has this anthemic sound that takes to my mind to a place that has a sea of faces crowded together in a mosh yelling the chorus up into the air.”
4 / 5 Stars (Nkechi Anele, Triple J)

“Eventide is awash with reverb guitars, with his warm upbeat vocals and sweet harmonies chiming in to keep this tune ripping along.”
(AU Review) [About ‘Eventide’]

Stream ‘Wash Over Me’

Gadigal/ Sydney-based artist, Sam Marks, returned just the other week with his hazy indie-rock in the form of ‘Wash Over Me’. He now delivers the fitting accompanying music video, produced by his very own brother.

The fifth release from the artist sees Marks burst with his raw sincerity, layered with fuzzed-out guitars with a bluesy pace and a goosebump-inspiring chorus. Fittingly tied into the overall despondent mood of the instrumentals, Marks explores his own feeling of being disconnected and detached from reality.

With the help from Ben Marks (Dreamstate Collective), the brothers have pieced together this music video that, rather than telling a linear story, is Ben’s visual interpretation of the song – a depiction of being in one’s own unreality. Sam Marks states:

“As with my other film clips, this one was produced solely by my brother Ben. I basically handed over creative control to Ben who came up with the theme and style of the clip.”

As the track doesn’t follow one clear linear story, as Sam Marks notes, “it is a song that explores my relationship with reality and how I can often feel disconnected from it,” Ben Marks’ intent was to, “explore a number of visual metaphors with an edge of strangeness and other-worldliness. It’s not based in the confines of reality which broadens the creative scope.”

Hitting hard like waves, the clip depicting this checked-out, dream-like state paired with the chilling feeling of the track is isolating, relatable and bittersweet.

‘Wash Over Me’ and this powerful music video is out now. Catch Sam Marks performing at Sunset Festival on December 3 with headliners including Allday, The Grogans and more.

Lucky Polo’s Fresh Perspective: ‘Minimum Wage Dreamer’

by the partae December 7, 2022
written by the partae

Lucky Polo launches into new sonic and lyrical territory with debut single ‘Minimum Wage Dreamer’. The young and eccentric Sydney native, now based in Irvine, CA seeks to find a new angle within RnB music and create music authentic to himself.

This single aims to question the late stage capitalist society we currently live in, constantly being pacified by social media and hypebeast culture. The single probes the validity and legitimacy of this in such a way it almost criticises it. It forces the listener to consider their own consuming habits and how living a life reflective of what is seen on social media can lead to a careless and depressing lifestyle.

Lucky Polo is currently preparing to release his debut single on the 9th of December. Though based currently in Irvine CA, the Australian artist harbours a deep connection to the local music scene in Sydney.

Lucky Polo’s experience in a variety of bands spanning multiple genres has deeply influenced the unique sound achieved in ‘Minimum Wage Dreamer’. Specifically, his involvement in jazz ensembles and punk rock outfits are evident in the sonic foundations of the piece.

Lucky Polo’s main focus is to create something fresh and authentic to himself. “I mean it’s definitely easier said than done, especially with so many inspiring artists out there you just want to copy them all. My personal perspective is realising that everybody is going to have a different take on something, so it’s all about embracing these defining features. For me it’s about trying to get as much of my personality in there as possible and hopefully people can relate to that.”

This release is incredibly exciting for Lucky Polo, as not only is it the first time he has released music as a solo artist, but also the first time he has sung and rapped on a song. “It took a minute for me to feel comfortable

with my own voice, but that’s the thing, I’m the only one with my voice in the world so if I don’t just do it no one’s ever going to hear it – as narcissistic as that sounds.” Having always had the role of supporting someone else vocally, this was a big shift for him.

On this release, he worked with Marrickville Golden Retriever Studio’s own Antonia Gauci on engineering and mixing, Chloe Dadd as assistant engineer and Simon Berckelman as masterer. These are important names in the Australian music industry who have worked on some of the greatest artists to come out of Australia such as Jessica Mauboy, Lime Cordiale and Boy and Bear.

THE UNKNOWNS ARE BACK WITH A NEW SINGLE + A BRISSY HEADLINE SHOW

by the partae December 6, 2022
written by the partae

Thinking About You is Out Now Via Bargain Bin Records

The Unknowns are back with the feel good punk rock song of the Summer “Thinking About You”. They’ll debut the track live with a hometown headline show in Brisbane on December 22.

A sunny, ripper of a tune, “Thinking About You” has arrived just in time to soundtrack your summer fling. A short, sharp ode to that special someone who consumes your thoughts, frontman Joshua Hardy pours his heart out over a bed of nostalgic riffs and unforgettable hooks that would make The Ramones bloody proud.

Hailing from Brissy, The Unknowns have been kicking about since late-2014. The band recently expanded into a four-piece when they welcomed The Chats frontman Eamon Sandwith to the fold (Hardy is also a member of The Chats).

Driven by their passion for timeless music expressing honest emotions, the band delivers an unassuming simplicity to sharing their truth through bursts of garage rock with power pop sensibilities which was on full display on their 2020 debut album, Nothing Will Ever Stop, released via Bargain Bin Records.

On the stage, The Unknowns perform with the kind of freedom and vigour that gets feet moving and has seen them tour across Australia with Melbourne punk pioneers the Meanies, Ed Kuepper (The Saints), Frenzal Rhomb, The Chats, Clowns, Pist Idiots and stacks more.

As an early Christmas gift to us all, The Unknowns will launch “Thinking About You” live at King Lear’s Throne in Brisbane on December 22. Be there or be square.

Behind You have an existing distinct style: guttural vocals, heavily distorted guitars, fuzzy delayed vocals, and unanticipated, cleverly timed drops that dissolve into a hypnotic, pounding bass. ‘Aries’ pushes forward beyond this, leaning further into an industrial tone, adding a mix of percussion that is bare and free of reverb, with moments of stripped-back relentless drones and monotonous vocals in the coda.

The track explores deeper themes of the excitement of destiny and fate in its lyricism. Of the two concepts Behind You explain, “When writing this song we were thinking about the hazards of believing in fate and luck. We wondered if it’s what pulls at the leash of dictators and narcissists, and what might have been sacrificed in its name. Also, think this is what they should play in all NSW VIP lounges. Lucky music for lucky people.”

‘Aries’ marks the band’s first time collaborating with production engineer Antonia Gauci, whose portfolio includes a diverse array of acts like Kesha, Lil’ Yachty, 700 Feel, Body Type, DMA’S, and more: “[Antonia] instantly got the brief and transformed the mix into its most accelerated, most powerful form.” ‘Aries’ presents a carefully produced new single, executing an impressive melting pot of genre tropes.

Forming in 2017, the Behind You trio consists of vocalist Frank Fisher, producer Joe Goddard, and percussionist Dylan Clay. They have since played a variety of underground shows across Eora / Sydney’s inner west, dipping and defining the local, growing hip-hop, punk, and club scenes with their unmistakable sound. ‘Aries‘ follows on from their latest single, ‘Neck Work’, and the 2021 EP Absolute Forgiveness, featuring a collaboration with Awabakal / Newcastle experimental duo, Craterface. Behind You garnered critical acclaim for their 2021 singles ‘Burning’ and ‘Extremely‘ gaining coverage from the likes of Rolling Stones and FBi Radio for their fierce releases. Stay tuned for more coming soon.

‘Aries‘ is out now, buy/stream it here.

The rise of the lover-boy: KYLE CHARLES HALL releases charming single ‘IN LOVE, 23’

by the partae December 6, 2022
written by the partae

Photo by: Luke Franceschini &  Daniel Steinert.

The transition from early to mid-20s can be a challenging time – changing friend groups, heightened independence, less time and more commitments. It can be a daunting, challenging and isolating time where perspectives shift and priorities change. For Adelaide born, Sydney-based Kyle Charles Hall, this transition created a re-centering of self and a grateful recognition of the joy and love that does exist – physicalised in his latest song “in love, 23”.

“In Love, 23 is about a time in my life where I felt incredibly lost (quarter life crisis anyone?). I feel like at this age you really start to notice how precious time is and this song was very much a step towards being more grateful for what I do have and loving the people around me with all I have.” Kyle Charles Hal

A sure to be loved tune amongst gen-z and millennials, the palatable croon and playful visuals are reminiscent of recent global pop stars Dominic Fike, ROLE MODEL and closer to home with KIAN, Hein Cooper and Hauskey.

There is a careful DIY feel to the production, from the mix of live-tracking in Kyle’s bedroom and in-studio at Debaser Studio (Andy Lawson). This results in a supremely relatable song that dives into the carefree exploration of adolescence into young-adulthood. From the recording, Andy Lawson (Noah Dillon, Death by Denim) continued to Mix the track with mastering by 301’s Steve Smart (Vance Joy, Casey Chambers, Ocean Alley).

“This was an unusual song for me as I wrote it very stereotypically; edge of the bed, pen and paper and an acoustic guitar kinda vibe. The production I then did played a huge part in getting the song to sound how it does but at the heart of it, it’s very much a singer/ songwriter song. The first chorus of the song was actually live tracked, with me playing and singing it into one mic to sort of keep a little bit of how the song first sounded.” Kyle Charles Hall

Since debuting in 2019, the west-coast singer-songwriter has scored a support slot for Teenage Joans, combined DSP streams of over 260,000+, and support from industry tastemakers triple j and Radio Adelaide. It’s clear his sound is finding a home with Aussie fans across the country.

“One of the most captivating records of the year”
Clash Magazine ★★★★★★★★★ (9/10)

Building off another year of immense critical fanfare and legendary live shows across the world, today Caroline Polachek stakes her claim as a cultural force and pop innovator with the announcement of her new album Desire, I Want To Turn Into You, slated for digital release on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2023. With this news comes Polachek’s statement single, ‘Welcome To My Island‘, from which the album name was born. LISTEN TO ‘WELCOME TO MY ISLAND’ HERE & PRE-SAVE DIWTTIY HERE.

Produced by Dan Nigro, (‘So Hot You’re Hurting My Feelings’, Olivia Rodrigo’s Sour), Polachek,  Danny L Harle, A. G. Cook, and Jim E-Stack, ‘Welcome To My Island‘ is Polachek’s voice at both its most wild and most mechanical, grounded by lyrical wit and anthemic hooks. The chorus lyric itself, “Desire, I Want To Turn Into You” rides the obsessive, unhinged edge between maniacal ego and headless euphoria; Valentine’s day will be hitting differently in 2023.  “Hope you like me, you ain’t leaving”…

The title ‘Welcome To My Island‘ has appeared before in Caroline’s  Instagram captions as well as discreetly embedded in her latest music video for ‘Sunset‘. Earlier this year, Polachek also shared her single ‘Billions‘, dropped a new rework of ‘Long Road Home‘ (her collaboration with Oneohtrix Point Never), collaborated with Charli XCX and Christine & The Queens for ‘New Shapes‘, Flume on ‘Sirens‘ and released Non Voglio Mai Vedere Il Sole Tramontare – a stunning aria / classical vocal performance composed by Oliver Leith and featured in the critically-acclaimed Last Days opera, which premiered at The Royal Opera House of London in October. Last year, Polachek debuted the game-changing ‘Bunny Is A Rider‘ which received critical praise including Pitchfork’s #1 Song of 2021.

Desire, I Want To Turn Into You is Polachek’s first album release since her 2019 experimental pop masterpiece PANG which cemented her as a generational talent. Her profile has grown exponentially since – landing her everywhere from the direct opening spot on Dua Lipa’s 2022 North American Future Nostalgia Tour, Coachella, Lollapalooza, Glastonbury, Primavera, All Points East, Governors Ball, Pitchfork Music Festival and Outside Lands, and involved with campaigns & shows for Loewe, Dior, Eckhaus Latta, and Chloé, to late night performances on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and The Late Night Show with James Corden. Standout viral tracks like ‘So Hot You’re Hurting My Feelings‘, have contributed to the album’s 175M global streams and counting and ignited a dance trend on TikTok.

Her latest, ‘Welcome To My Island‘ is a masterful addition to Polachek’s impeccable portfolio sure to capture music listeners everywhere.

‘Welcome To My Island‘ is out now, buy/stream it here.

Good Things Festival 2022 Melbourne

by the partae December 5, 2022
written by the partae

Over 32,000 fans descended upon Flemington Racecourse to partake in a stellar international and local lineup of rock, metal, and punk (and all things in between) bands.

Ukrainian metalcore band Jinjer kicked off on the main stage at the start of the day. They didn’t disappoint fans, delivering a high energy with lead singer Tatiana’s impressive vocal ability switching from melodic precision to deep screaming growl.

Locals Thornhill have created a huge local fanbase, punters turned up in droves to see the dynamic set from the metal 4 piece.

There was lineup of bands covered most heavy music genres. Swedish punk band Millencollin deliver a tight set that encouraged plenty of crowd surfing and moshing. Sabaton also from Sweden played their battle-themed heavy metal complete with machine gun microphone stands and fire. Locals Amity Affliction also delivered some fire during their

intense set.

Electric Callboy was a crowd favourite, with fans adorning wigs and coloured tracksuits like the band as they performed their eclectic mix of electric, pop, and metalcore music with comedic slant.

It was great to see one of my personal favorite Japanese rock bands, One Okay Rock deliver a short 45 minute high energy set on the main stage. Also from Japan. metalcore Paledusk floored punters with their super high energy performance, with guitarist Daisuke doing 360 degree high flying kick whilst playing.

Gojira delivered a super tight performance with intense energy, the blasts of C02 almost symbolic of them letting off steam. Metal veterans Soulfly also showcased their Brazilian metal style, with fans lapping it up.

A pleasant surprise was seeing death pop Norwegian band Blood Command, fronted by Aussie singer Nikki Brumen. A super high energy set and the band seemed to love every moment performing.

Many punters were here to see the legendary Deftones perform opening with “Genesis”  and also including their classics “My Own Summer” and “Be Quiet and Drive” as the sun began to set.

UK modern rockers Bring Me the Horizon headlined the festival, starting with explosive magenta confetti bomb as they launched into  “Can You Feel My Heart”. The lighting, screen and stage visuals were absolutely stunning, and reflected the theme for each song. BMTH fans got everything they wanted.

Where are you currently based?

Currently based on the NSW, Central Coast

What’s the music scene like on the NSW Central Coast at the moment?

There are sooooo many emerging artists on the coast and everyone kind of rallies together to support each other, however, there isn’t a HUGE music scene as such in terms of performing at venues. Generally need to go to Sydney or Newcastle for that 🙂

How did you first start playing music?

I first started playing music when I began learning guitar. When I was younger, I used to create mini concerts with the songs that I had written (which by the way were terrible) in my living room and my brother was the lighting man, sound guy and ticket seller for my parents to come to viewings hahaha

What’s been happening recently?

I have been on a 3 year hiatus due to a few things. First reason, life can get very busy for me as I play semi-professional sport and am also a PE teacher. Second reason is that I wanted to spend time writing with some other people and really ensure that I honed my craft a little further. Now I have currently been recording a whole bunch of songs so I am prepared for a big 2023.

Your latest single ‘Doing Better’ Ft Ramzie and co-written with your friend Boy Soda is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

The sound was influenced by pop, rnb, trap vibes. I am really loving artists like charlieonnafriday, KODE, Arizona Zervas and Justin Bieber so I wanted the sound to be somewhere within that zone. In terms of the songwriting, the inspiration came from a really shitty relationship that I was in that I had just got out of at the time. I always remember this one thing that they said to me which was “you will never do any better than me” so that is kind of where the idea came from. I could finally say look at me, I am doing much better hahahhaha

Please tell us about the songwriting process with Boy Soda:

The songwriting process with Boy Soda is always so EASY because he is an absolute freak songwriter. We basically felt out an instrumental and then began mumbling different melodies to it. As we mumble we start finding lyrics that fit both melodically and figuratively. We wrote 2 songs that day because we had a good flow with topics, melodies and lyrics.

How did you come to work with Ramzie and how was the experience?

I came to work with RAMZIE due to Liam Quinn who produced, mixed and mastered the song. I basically had built the entire song but didn’t have a bridge and was unsure whether to leave an empty music space there, write my own bridge or get a rapper on it. Liam said he had contact with RAMZIE who is based in Atlana, US. He reached out and within a couple of days he had recorded a verse and sent it to me. It was awesome and fit super well so we used it 🙂

It was a super easy process because RAMZIE is so fast with the way he works.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who with?

I recorded ‘Doing Better’ in 2019 as a demo initially with Boy Soda on the Central Coast. I then got it produced, mixed and mastered by Liam Quinn about a week later in his Sydney studio.

Liam Quinn (Peach PRC) produced the track, please tell us about how you came to work with Liam and the experience as a whole:

I reached out to Liam a while back because I had followed him on socials for a while and new his stuff was awesome!! My experience with Liam every single time we have worked has been amazing. I get along with him extremely well so it feels easy when we work together. There is a lot of trust in the process with him.

Please tell us about any artists from your area the we should keep an eye on:

ELASKIA is huge and always has been. She plays a lot of festivals and has her song on netflix TV shows including Dynasty as well as free to air TV like Home and Away. She is awesome and a great songwriter.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

My biggest influences at the moment are charlieonnafriday, The Kid Laroi, Justin Bieber, KODE, Arizona Zervas, FLETCHER, Blackbear.

What do you like to do away from music?

Away from music I am an athlete and PE teacher. I am actually heading to Ireland next year to play Oztag for the Australian team so that is really exciting. Besides that I just love being around my friends, eating food and playing with my crazy dog haha.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2022 going into 2023?

I will be finishing up some music projects and ensure that I am prepared for a huge 2023 filled with lots of different music.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

Any food is amazing, however, if I was to choose a cuisine it would probably be Thai. If I am being super specific though I JUST LOVE POTATO. Cook me potato in any form and I will be absolutely living for it!! Haha

Place to hangout is generally with my friends by my pool OR I do love the beach in summer.
