DON’T COME MONDAY RELEASE NEW SINGLE ‘HANGMAN’

by the partae November 17, 2022
written by the partae

Hailing from Ulverstone in North-West Tasmania, Don’t Come Monday have established themselves as a force to be reckoned with on the Tasmanian music scene. With humble beginnings in 2015, the band’s new single, ‘Hangman’ will be available on all major streaming platforms from 15th November, 2022, with the music video set for release on 17th November.

‘Hangman’ sees the band expand into contemporary rock and blues territories, utilising gritty and powerful double-tracked vocals, haunting harmonica lines, and foot-stomping riffs. Lyricist Rob Rose speaks about the meaning of the song: “Hangman is about fighting internal battles of dread, doubt, and negativity. It’s about confronting your demons and challenging those perpetual inner voices of anxiety, depression, and fear that can creep in and take over. It’s a dark song about a dark topic, but with a positive and empowering message”.

The music video for the single was shot and edited in Forth, Tasmania by Jala-loka Lewandowski, and directed by Jacob Boote. The video compliments the dark and sombre mood of the track, culminating in an energetic live shot where frontman Rob Rose unmasks, revealing the duality of himself and the ‘hangman’ character before belting out the final refrain with the band, “Hangman hunting me, I don’t want to die!” Co-produced and recorded at Kindred Hall by Andrew Forth, mixed by Russ T. Rokk (Hoodoo Gurus, Rose Tattoo, Midnight Oil, Noiseworks, The Choirboys), and mastered by William

Bowden at King Willy Sound (Gotye, Eskimo Joe, Ballpark Music, The Living End), ‘Hangman’ is 100% Tasmanian-made – from initial conception, through to final stages of audio and video production.

‘Hangman’ is the band’s second single, after independently releasing the controversial and brutally honest ‘Convenience (Will Kill Us)’ from the ‘Hands of Time’ EP in 2020 to widespread positive response.

The band boasts multiple decades of combined musical and performance experience, with prolific songwriter Rob Rose (Thongs and Socks Collective, FOLKUS) on lead vocals, Grant Hearps (Golden Sunbird, Home Brewed Blues, Swell Magnet) on bass, Fintan McCullough (Tessa Lee and The Cold Weather Band, Midnight Messengers) on guitar, and Rick Lovell (Billy Rocket Band, Paradigm, Fireball) on drums. Jack B. Harper contributed the harmonica tracks for “Hangman”.

JOY ORBISON Releases new single ‘2M3 2U’ Out now via XL Recordings

by the partae November 17, 2022
written by the partae

Today Joy Orbison releases his new single ‘2M3 2U’, a catchy and futuristic sounding track that follows previous tracks ‘pinky ring’ and ‘red velve7’ and sees Joy O continue his journey towards the dancefloor.

“I see this one as a bit of a UK take on hyperpop,” says Joy. “But with a bit of bass weight. the vocal part could be a sample of some garbled message of love in Bladerunner or the Fifth Element, and the main riffs had me thinking about the DJ Narrows records we’d play at youth club parties. Interesting top lines seem to be a bit absent in my world these days and I’ve definitely been influenced by contemporary drum & bass and their endless search for the catchiest wobble.”

After another summer of standout performances at the likes of Sonar, Glastonbury Festival, Houghton and All Points East, 2022 also saw Joy Orbison release his take on Jorja Smith’s ‘Rose Rouge’, as well as another collaboration with Overmono. Their joint single ‘Blind Date’ was a “mesmerising dance track” (The Times) that saw both Joy and Overmono rule the dance floor together. Dominating the UK’s dance music scene alone or collaboratively, who knows what 2023 will bring? Like the movies that it references, perhaps ‘2M3 2U’ is a glimpse of the future.

Praise for Joy Orbison – still slipping vol. 1

“Rarely is electronic music so utterly human as on Still Slipping” – Pitchfork

“One of the greatest producers in UK dance music.” – Resident Advisor

“If there was going to be one mixtape we all needed to hear in 2021, it would probably be Joy Orbison’s debut, Still Slipping Vol.1, an aural assimilation of the best of British bass culture.”
– Loud & Quiet

“A Joy Orbison full-length, whether you call it a mixtape or an album, has to be among the most hotly-anticipated ideas in UK dance music writ large.” – Resident Advisor

“Already sounding like one of the albums of the year” – Mixmag

“The second you just change the language to mixtape, a woman’s voice deadpans at the end of sparko, “nobody cares”. It’s a droll bit of irony for a record crafted with such care. still slipping is anything but thrown together – in fact, it’s hard to imagine a more holistically conceived set of tracks. This is a body of work that definitely deserves to be taken seriously.” – CRACK Magazine

“One of the most quietly moving dance music records of the year” – Pitchfork

“To diehard UK clubgoers, a full-length project is something people didn’t necessarily expect or need to hear from Joy Orbison. This is the man behind ‘Ellipsis’, ‘GR Etiquette’ and ‘Hyph Mngo’, for god’s sake. By ignoring all rules and blending UK garage, UK funky, house and dubstep, his impact upon dancefloors is already written. No, with still slipping Vol. 1, O’Grady is letting us know: this is something new.” – The Quietus

“A long-awaited, essential debut” – DJ Mag

“His boldest and most intimate productions to date” – Wire Magazine

Yung Gravy has officially sold out the Sydney and Melbourne dates on his wildly anticipated Australian tour in February 2023 – less than a week after tickets going on sale. Tickets to the new date are on sale now via secretsounds.com!

Yung Gravy dropped Marvelous on 28 October via Republic Records. The album was accompanied by his new music video for single ‘Dancing In The Rain’ and ushers in Gravy’s biggest, boldest and best era yet – and we get to see it live!

Yung Gravy released the record’s lead single ‘Betty (Get Money)’ in June 2022, popping off as a generation bridging banger as it reignites the classic chorus (and iconic synths) of Rick Astley’s ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’. Produced by Dillon Francis, Dwilly, and Popnick, the track has already gone Gold in the United States and Canada, in addition to generating over 200 million global streams.

‘Betty (Get Money)’ notably broke out as Yung Gravy’s first Top 10 on the Billboard Hot Rap Songs Chart and leapt into the Top 30 of the Hot 100, ticking off another first for the rapper. Dominating airwaves both in the US and Australia, the single led to Yung Gravy making his late-night television debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and a performance slot at MTV’s VMAs pre-show.

Alongside these massive releases, Yung Gravy has accelerated his meteoric rise this year with a co-headline tour of the states with Dillon Francis, an opening slot on Limp Bizkit’s arena tour and a series of RIAA certified platinum and gold bangers including: platinum ‘Mr. Clean’, platinum ‘1 Thot 2 Thot Red Thot Blue Thot’,  gold ‘oops!!!’ gold ‘Magic’, gold ‘Whip A Tesla’ and ‘Welcome to Chilis’ with bbno$.

Yung Gravy is currently on a 29-city, co-headline tour of North America with bbno$ through December, before reaching Australian shores in February. Tickets are selling fast so jump on the gravy train and get them quick!

Where are you currently based?
Bali island, Indonesia.

What’s the music scene like in Bali / Indonesia at the moment?
The music scene in Bali and Indonesia is growing now after the pandemic. Music concerts and festivals have started again. I think its a good start after recovering from the pandemic.

Your latest single is out now, what’s it called?
Just dropped a new single in Bahasa Indonesian language called ‘Aku’ released by Extra Sensorial Productions London-Bali.

What influenced the sound and songwriting?
I think the influence comes from the 50s 60s music

How did you go about writing this track?
I started writing this song alone at first and then I showed it too my good Friend Dave Syauta the vocalist of the Paps Band Bandung and he really liked it and we finish it together.

You have an album coming out in early 2023, please tell us about the songwriting influences:
The influence on the new album is really different from my previous one. The new album is more personal to me and i wrote alot of the songs during the pandemic which have more emotional meaning.

Please tell us about the songwriting process for your new album:
Actually i started writing right before the pandemic while I was still in Melbourne city and then went back to Indonesia and continued writing throughout the pandemic.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with?
I started recording in Stonedeaf music studio in Bali with my producer Cipta Gunawan and also recorded some songs in Sagala Rumah studio Jakarta shout out to Mang Xonad and all the crew. Also recorder some songs in House Records music studio in Renon Bali.

How did you approach the recording process?
I took my time over two years to record and just kept it fun as usual how music is supposed to be.

What programs/equipment did you use?
Different studios had different programs. Some we used protools some used logic pro and all the analog hardware.

Please tell us a little about what we can expect from this new album and how it’s different from your past releases:
There’s alot of surprises from the music arrangements and the lyrics. Alot more slower tempo songs on this album. Just wait and check it out! Haha

Who are you listening to at the moment?
Im not listening to alot of music at the moment because I’ve been focusing on recording my new album.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2022 going into 2023?
Writing and making alot more new music and skateboarding.

Favourite food and place to hangout?
My favorite food is Indonesian food for sure but depend where I’m at in the moment.

Sarah Burton ‘I Hate Goodbyes’ Premiere

by the partae November 17, 2022
written by the partae
I Hate Goodbyes is a love song, written after the decision to embark in a long-distance relationship with another touring musician. The song was written in the hopeful space of falling in love and feeling like the world will conspire to help you. The subsequent album explores the challenges that come with long-distance love.  Recorded in Sudbury Ontario at Lala Pop Shop amidst the Canadian winter lockdown, the distance was made so much more, well – distant – due to the circumstances of the world, which in fact seemed to conspire against this love.

Recorded and produced by power-pop-rocker Dany Laj, the track (and subsequent album) feature the melodic basslines of fellow Dany Laj and the Looks co-conspirateur, Jeannette Dowling and drums and percussion from Dusty Campbell. Burton’s writing style on this album ranges from classic 90s pop-rock to a more current indie rock, with a little throw-back to the 60s, laced with a touch of the bizarre. With influences that range from Rilo Kiley and Weezer, to Harry Nilsson and a touch of Concrete Blonde, 64 Magic Queen’s is an unfiltered trip through a brain that is hopeful even in the darkest hours.  Laj’s melodic guitar lines complement the songs with grace, walking the line between glossy and gritty, much like Burton’s vocal stylings.

Don’t Come Monday

by the partae November 17, 2022
written by the partae

Where are you currently based?
We’re based in Ulverstone, in north-west Tasmania.

How did the band form?
We started playing together in 2015 when Rob Rose (vocals, guitar) approached Grant Hearps (bass) and Fin McCullough (guitar) looking to form a band to focus predominantly on original music. Rick Lovell took up the throne behind the drums in 2019.

What’s been happening recently?
Since recording/shooting ‘Hangman’ we’ve been continuing to write new songs and playing a couple of gigs a month including at some new venues, which has been nice.

Your latest single ‘Hangman’ will be out on the 15th of November 2022, what influenced the sound and songwriting?
Hangman is probably the ‘heaviest’ tune we’ve written to date. We’re always striving to write songs that don’t sound like our other songs. This one came out as a gritty, dirty, raw blues rock tune.

How did you go about writing Hangman?
Rob (lyricist) and Fin devised a sketch of what became the ‘A part’ of the song during an acoustic songwriting session. Fin had tuned his guitar down to open D tuning to allow the vocals to be performed in a lower register. This sketch was tweaked and developed upon with the band, and we subsequently decided to make it a 2-part song with a more lively and riff-based outro with a repeated vocal hook as the ‘B part”.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with?
We recorded the track with co-producer Andrew Forth at Kindred Hall in NW Tassie in November ’21, and then recorded vocals/overdubs progressively over the months that followed. The track was then sent to Russell Pilling (AKA Russ T. Rokk) for mixing, and the mastering was done by William Bowden at King Willy Studios.

How did you approach the recording process?
As it’s a two-part song, we chose to record the two sections separately, allowing us to ensure we got the change in the tempo of the song exactly how we wanted it to be. Drums and bass were tracked first, then the different guitar parts were added, before harmonica (performed by Jack B. Harper) and final vocals were recorded.

What influenced the music video for Hangman?
We worked in conjunction with Jacob Boote (director) and Jala-loka Lewandowski (videographer/editor) for the video. Jacob wanted to go for a dark, medieval-ish look for the first part of the song, and a brighter, more modern looking live band shoot for the outro “B part”. Laura Mead created some props to assist us, including the “hangman” headpiece. We started shooting at about 2pm and finished by about 8 on a rainy, windy day in Forth Tasmania. The whole process was great fun – Jacob and Jala-loka were excellent to work with and many laughs were had along the way.

Any upcoming shows?
We’re at Shearwater Resort Tavern on 02/12/22, Island State Brewing – The Pier (Ulverstone) on 23/12/22 and 20/01/23, and MONA Museum (Hobart) on 05/02/23

Who are you listening to at the moment?
Lately we’ve been listening to plenty of Tasmanian artists, including new releases from Big Alcatraz, Marcus Wynwood, Tessa Lee, Raccoon Dog, and The True Champions of Breakfast, as well as some old favourites by the likes of The Bad Dad Orchestra, Pete Cornelius, The Sheyana Band, Avargo Groove, and The Smooth C***s.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2022 going into 2023?
We plan to continue writing new songs, giging, and to release another five or six track EP of songs recorded during the same sessions as “Hangman” at some stage in 2023.

Favourite food and place to hangout?
A good burger by the Leven River! We can’t wait for Island State Brewing – The Pier to open up in the former location of the ever-popular Buttons Brew Pub. You can’t beat a beer/food/live music joint perched above the river of your hometown!

Melbourne’s free all-ages festival, ‘Illuminate the River’ reveals set times, announces flood fundraising initiatives

by the partae November 16, 2022
written by the partae

Illuminate the River, the free and all-ages music festival featuring Something for Kate, Baker Boy, Art vs. Science, Montaigne, Mia Wray, Teeny Tiny Stevies and many more lands this weekend, and ahead of the day, the festival has unveiled set times and a fundraising initiative for flood-affected residents.

Presented by City of Moonee Valley and On The Road Again and held on Saturday 19 November at The Boulevard in Aberfeldie from 12pm – 9pm, the day’s activities include three stages of live music, carnival rides, kids’ activities, a box wars workshop and more.

A full list of set times can be downloaded HERE or are located below.

Given the festival’s proximity to the flood zones on the Maribyrnong River, all water-based activities at the event, including the anticipated laser show and inflatable regatta, have been cancelled.

Instead, the festival is encouraging patrons to dig deep and support members of their community affected by the recent floods, and the organisations that help them.

Fundraising QR codes will be situated throughout the site on the day, which the public can scan to donate to GIVIT, the Essendon SES or both.

Volunteers in the Essendon SES Unit have been protecting Moonee Valley and surrounding communities since 1981. Most recently they coordinated the evacuation and rescue of residents when the Maribyrnong River flooded.

GIVIT has been helping those impacted by the recent floods directly. This organisation matches donors directly to those in need or uses 100% of donated funds to purchase items that are requested by those who need them.

Produced by the City of Moonee Valley and presented by On The Road Again, a Victorian Government initiative bringing live music back across the state, Illuminate the River 2022 will be held on Saturday 19 November from 12pm – 9pm in the Boulevard in Aberfeldie, and is a free, family-friendly and all-ages event.

Attendees are encouraged to walk, cycle or catch public transport to the event.

Canadian hardcore luminaries Alexisonfire have added a second Melbourne show on Saturday 25 February to their anticipated 2023 Australian visit.

Responding to demand during the pre-sale period, the five-piece will now deliver five headline shows down under, kicking off at Brisbane’s Fortitude Music Hall on Friday 17 February, followed by a stop at Sydney’s Enmore Theatre on Monday 20 February, back-to-back nights at Melbourne’s Forum on Friday 24 and Saturday 25 February, winding up in Adelaide on Monday 27 February.

All shows will go on sale to the general public tomorrow at 10am local time.

Admired by Australian audiences, on their eighth visit down under Alexisonfire will perform songs from their celebrated catalogue, along with tunes from their new record Otherness – their first full-length album in thirteen years, never before heard live by local audiences.

The group that Rolling Stone declared “put Canadian post-hardcore on the map”, Alexisonfire have blown audiences away at major international festival appearances over Northern Hemisphere summer, including Lollapalooza across South America, Canada’s Born & Raised Festival and a “flawless” Rage Against The Machine North American support.

Alexisonfire will be joined on all dates by local rockers Luca Brasi, one of the country’s most roadworthy outfits.

Jovi Skyler

by the partae November 16, 2022
written by the partae

Where are you currently based?

Earth. But to be specific about it, I would say, Sydney, Australia.

How did you first start playing music?

I was encouraged into it at first, but gave up quickly after six months or so. Then one night, I saw the music video for Nirvana’s – Smells Like Teen Spirit on Rage. I realised I had a cheap electric guitar and crappy amplifier, covered in dust, that I could use tomorrow to express my angst.

What’s been happening recently?

Not much I guess. I’m kind of a recluse, but I want to record some new songs soon.

Your latest single ‘Evergreen’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

I suppose my sound is punk, alternative rock with an early ’90s spirit and a twist of psychedelia. A lot of my influences come from all the grunge bands of that time. If I could find a time machine on eBay, I would prefer to go back then.

How did you go about writing Evergreen?

It was my first love and it was a tumultuous relationship. So, that’s what inspired me. I focused on that. Dug deep down into my memories and created Evergreen. For me at least, a song comes from the gut. It flows out from my veins, it hurts a little. Hopefully, the listener can feel the sincerity in it. I didn’t think too hard about the lyrics or the music. I just channeled my energy into my emotions, then everything spewed out from me. It’s a weird sort of meditation, but it works for me.

What does this single mean to you?

Evergreen deals with being in a tumultuous relationship and how it can drain you with its ups and downs. So, it is something deeply personal and means a lot to me, as the song is autobiographical.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with?

I recorded Evergreen in a friend’s studio basement. It was cold, rainy, and a miserable day. I recorded the song within half a day. The guitar parts were done first, then the drums, and then lastly I did two vocal takes. I produced Evergreen myself. It was mixed and mastered on the same day. I slightly remastered the track one night just over a month ago, because originally there was a guitar solo at the beginning of the track, but I decided to cut it out for the single, in order to make it more marketable for radio.

How did you approach the recording/production process?

I will practise the songs I want to record repeatedly, usually till I’m nauseated by the tracks. Songs are 100-percent complete when I decide to record them. It’s pretty simple, if you know the songs so much that it makes you nauseous. Oh yeah, lots of lollies and fizzy drinks help.

Please tell us about how you filmed and edited the music video:

Footage was self-filmed, taken from the past. I tried to give it good vibes, full of youthful fervour and fun punk-rock energy, but also a dark and chaotic visual to acknowledge the roller-coaster ride of it. I edited it using iMovie. I overlaid the videos and changed the colours. I think it was a bit unhealthy for me to revisit. It has a strong dose of purity though.

Where and when did you learn to film and edit?

I learnt it during the start of the pandemic in Sydney, but I guess it started a bit earlier than that, probably with my first single off of my debut EP, Gia , a song I wrote about Gia Carangi. It just grew after that, in regards to my skill in editing. Self-filming is pretty easy or filming itself, it is more about deciding what parts to use, I feel is the key in expressing the song visually and then combining it together with other components as a whole. Covid, lockdowns, and restrictions, gave me the reason and motivation to make my own music videos. So, filming and editing was self-taught.

How did the concept for the music video come about?

I just wanted to make it autobiographical, so, it’s a two minute glimpse into my own hazy memory and a true visual representation of the song itself.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

No one in particular at the moment. I don’t have Spotify, so mostly my old CD collection that is on my phone. Nirvana, Sonic Youth, Hole, Pixies,The Breeders, Iggy Pop, Ramones. I feel the days of buying a CD because of a single you like are done and dusted. It’s basically for free out there on the interweb, which makes it hard as a songwriter, it doesn’t feel as special for me as it used to.

What do you like to do away from music?

I like to spend time with my cats. I used to paint, expressionism sort of stuff, but stopped once I made the decision to focus on songwriting instead, however, I use a lot of old paintings for my singles cover artwork now. I sometimes like to play video games, but I haven’t played anything for a long time. The last thing I played was The Quarry.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2022 going into 2023?

I hate looking too far ahead, but there will be more songs to come and I should start touring.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

My favourite food right now would be nachos or Violet Crumble. Any cafe that has a nice view for me to stare out the window and daydream.

Shame announce new album “Food for Worms” & share ‘Fingers of Steel’ video

by the partae November 16, 2022

shame have announced Food for Worms, their explosive third record, out February 24, 2023 via Dead Oceans. Shared alongside is the James Humby-directed video for new single ‘Fingers of Steel’, which sees the band work 19-hour shifts creating fake social media accounts to like, follow and comment on their own material.

On the video, Charlie Steen said: “Self-obsession, social media flagellation and death can all be seen in this Oscar nominated performance. No one’s ever done a video like this before and when you watch it, you’ll see why. Think Casablanca, but in colour, and better.”

The announcement follows the culmination of shame’s North American tour last month, in support of UK Top 10 second album Drunk Tank Pink, and sees shame enter a new, surreal landscape, as reflected in the cover art designed by acclaimed artist Marcel Dzama. It’s suggestive of what is left unsaid, what lies beneath the surface, the farcical and fantastical every day that we are living in, in a society where both everything and nothing is possible.

On the one hand, new album Food for Worms calls to mind a certain morbidity, but on the other, it’s a celebration of life; the way that, in the end, we need each other. The album is an ode to friendship, and a documentation of the dynamic that only five people who have grown up together – and grown so close, against all odds – can share.

For the first time, the band are not delving inwards, but seeking to capture the world around them. “I don’t think you can be in your own head forever,” says Steen. A conversation after one of their gigs with a friend prompted a stray thought that he held onto: “It’s weird, isn’t it? Popular music is always about love, heartbreak, or yourself. There isn’t much about your mates.”

It’s through this, and defiance, that the band have continually moved forward together; finding light in uncomfortable contractions and playing their vulnerabilities as strengths: The near-breakdowns, identity crises, frontman Charlie Steen routinely ripping his top off on stage as a way of tackling his body weight insecurities. Everything is thrown into their live show and the best shows of their lives are happening now.

Back in 2018, around debut album Songs of Praise, they were at the vanguard of a transformative scene that changed the underground music landscape in the UK; paving the way for artists soon to come. Then, Charlie Steen suffered a series of panic attacks which led to a tour’s cancellation. For the first time, since being plucked from the small pub stages of south London and catapulted into notoriety, shame were confronted with who they’d become on the other side of it. This era, of being forced to endure reality and the terror that comes with your own company, would form shame’s second album, 2021’s Drunk Tank Pink.

Now they arrive, finally, at a place of hard-won maturity. Enter: Food for Worms, which Steen declares to be “the Lamborghini of shame records.”

Reconnecting with what they first loved about being in a band hotwired them into making the album after a false start during the pandemic. Their management then presented them with a challenge: in three weeks, shame would play two intimate shows and debut two sets of entirely new songs. It meant the band returned the same ideology which propelled them to these heights in the first place: the love of playing live, on their own terms, fed by their audience. Thus, Food for Worms crashed into life faster than anything they’d created before. The band recorded it while playing festivals all over Europe, invigorated by the strength of the reaction their new material was met with. That live energy, what it’s like to witness shame in their element, is captured perfectly on record – like lightning in a bottle.

The album marks a sonic departure from anything they’ve done before. shame have abandoned their post-punk beginnings for far more eclectic influences, drawing from the sharp yet uncomplicated lyrical observations of Lou Reed and the more melodic works of 90s German band, Blumfeld.

They called upon renowned producer Flood (Nick Cave, U2, PJ Harvey, Foals) to execute their vision. Recording each track live meant a kind of surrender: here, the rough edges give the album its texture; the mistakes are more interesting than perfection. In a way, it harks back to the title itself and the way that with this record, the band are embracing frailty and by doing so, are tapping into a new source of bravery.

Dawson Gool ‘I Was Wrong’ Premiere

by the partae November 16, 2022
written by the partae

On Dawson Gools 19th birthday, he left his single traffic light town to study at Berklee College of Music. Although he dropped out after one year, he kept writing songs while working jobs in a handful of places. From Montreal to the Austrian Alps, working as anything from a line cook to a mailman. It was during this time he found his distinctive and honest voice as a songwriter, and producer. The majority of Dawson’s self produced debut EP, “January, Backdoor”, was written and recorded in Vancouver, Canada. The EP sounds most at home in the rain, or when there’s a fog rolling in.

QUOTE FROM DAWSON

“I wrote ‘I Was Wrong’ about caring for someone who is not ready to be helped. A family member had been falling back into some old habits and–rather than repeat encouraging phrases over and over–I felt like I had to be honest and say, ‘hey, maybe things won’t work out, and that’s ok’. it’s a bit pessimistic but it’s how I was feeling at the time.

Where are you currently based?

Billy: We are currently based in Melbourne, Victoria!

How did you first start playing music?

Billy: Lucas and I first started playing together in 2015 after meeting in high school.  We quickly got talking about metal and rock bands that we liked and spent the next  year or so writing songs together. In late 2016, we met John – I’d only met him briefly  before, but heard he was a crazy good drummer that loved bands like Metallica and  Slipknot. We all clicked instantly and began jamming along to Metallica songs. We  started performing around late 2017, when we were all still underage, so we didn’t  tell the venue how old we were so we could actually play shows!

Jordan joined on vocals in 2018 after we played at a friend’s party together, and just  had instant chemistry as a group. I feel like that’s when the band as it is now really  begun.

What’s been happening recently?

John: We’ve been super busy, just having come off a run of shows to promote our  debut EP, Panic, which dropped in late July. That was a blast, and we got to play with  a bunch of really cool bands. We also just dropped our favourite song yet and have  been super busy behind the scenes recording our new project, which has been sick  as!

Your latest single ‘I Watched You Fade Away’ is out now, what influenced the  sound and song writing?

Jordan: I think we were all really falling in love with Deftones at the time, while that  influence probably didn’t come out a lot in the final song, it definitely informed a lot  of our stylistic choices. I really tried to be as candid as possible with the lyrics,  drawing from personal experiences I was going through at the time regarding the  symbolic loss of somebody close to me. I really used this track as catharsis for those  feelings.

How did you go about writing ‘I Watched You Fade Away’?

Lucas: While ‘I Watched You Fade Away’ was recorded at the same time as ‘Panic’, it  tells a different story, and in many ways, was the song that solidified our creative  vision, and the direction we wanted to take musically. This was the first song we

wrote together after having spent years apart from each other due to COVID-19  lockdowns. Having already written the bulk of ‘Panic’ before COVID, we weren’t sure  how we would go writing together after so long.

When we went in to record it with Chris Vernon, it occurred to us that this song that  didn’t quite fit the theme and story we were hoping to tell with our debut EP. So, we  decided to rewrite the song with Chris, and give it an independent release, to allow  ourselves to explore a different narrative, delve into a more straight-forward  approach to song writing, and narrow in on certain elements of our sound that we  wanted to emphasise:

When and where did you record and who did you work with?

Jordan: We recorded the song at the same time as the rest of the EP. As it was  written after the bulk of the EP, we wanted to release it separately, to present it as  somewhat of an epilogue or a companion piece to the EP. Chris Vernon really helped  us shape it towards the sounds we were experimenting with at the time, like a next  progression to our sound and narrative.

How did you approach the recording process?

John: This song was the first one we wrote all together after the lockdowns here in  Victoria. By that point, most of the EP had already been written, and it was the first  song we’d written together in so long. When we were in the studio, we rewrote the

song with Chris Vernon, keeping the original chorus and bridge and adjusting a  couple of sections to make it the best song it could be.

You’re playing at Stay Gold in Melbourne on the 18th of November, what can we  expect?

Lucas: We’ll be giving ‘I Watched You Fade Away’ it’s official live debut, so if you’ve  been loving the song so far, this will be a must. The show is celebrating the release of  Suspyria’s new album; we’re super excited to play with those guys, we’ve been good  mates with them for a while and they always put on a great show. We’ll also be  playing alongside Ransom Revue and Harroway, which will be our first time playing  with both those bands!

How do you prepare for shows?

Billy: We have a routine of catching up, planning, discussing our upcoming week, and  playing together at least twice a week. That way, we feel confident and eager to get  back on the stage each time.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Jordan: Personally, I’ve been listening to a lot of Kacey Musgraves, Uyama Hiroto and  Between Friends. On the metal/rock side of things, I’ve been listening to Movements  pretty religiously. All of us have been loving Bad Omens, Holding Absence and the  new Dayseeker album.

What do you like to do away from music?

Jordan: I try and go to the gym as much as possible, I love making beats and working  on other music projects. My whole life really has something to do with music in some  regard, so when I’m not doing music as a career I’m doing it as a hobby.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2022 going into 2023?

Lucas: We’ll be continuing to promote the new single, and playing a few yet-to-be announced shows! We’ve got plenty up our sleeve for next year, with even more  new music on the horizon, so definitely stay tuned!

Favourite food and place to hangout?

John: Guzman Gomez slaps so hard. If I could eat one thing for the rest of my life it  would probably be that.
