Where are you currently based?

London

How did you first start playing music?

I was lucky enough to grow up in a very musical family, with my Grandmother being an incredible singer and pianist and my mum also being very talented at the piano. I always felt so free and joyful singing and my mum was the one to really build my confidence. Writing was an instinctual part of me, where I really got a lot of joy from writing poems and stories so the two naturally intertwined as I got into my teens.

What’s been happening recently?

2020 and 2021 saw me back home in Nelson with my mum and sister Clare. It was there, I really found myself in a new way which started to really show itself in the music I was writing. Then as New Zealand opened up, I found my now manager Jeffrey Figueroa and we’ve been working very hard bringing this vision to life. Lots of writing sessions and living life!

Your latest single ‘Teenage Renegade’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

I have always deeply connected to the likes of Kate Bush, Stevie Nicks, Tears For Fears etc, music that really moves you and takes you to another world where you feel free. Lyrically, I really get inspired by words that connect to a deeper part of myself. I often go through times of feeling pretty anxious and overwhelmed so I wanted to write an ode to that inner wild child inside all of us, and that really came out when we were writing Teenage Renegade.

You’re in Australia to support Teenage Renegade, how does it feel to be back?

YES! It feels INCREDIBLE to be back. I feel so much support and love here and the whole atmosphere is incredibly welcoming.

Who did you work with during the creation of Teenage Renegade?

I worked with the incredible Tyler Spry and Areli Castro.

Where and when did you record/produce/master?

I wrote ‘Teenage Renegade’ over zoom in January of 2022 from my house in London!

How did you approach the recording process?

I actually got the train down to a beautiful seaside village in Deal, UK and recorded vocals in my air bnb. It was an incredibly peaceful and calm way to approach this and really allowed me to capture the right emotion I was after for Teenage Renegade.

What do you have planned for the remainder of 2022 going into 2023?

We’ve got the next single all lined up and ready to go and I’m so incredibly excited. The EP is just about ready and I couldn’t be more excited to start getting the live shows ready for you!

Do you have an EP in the pipeline?

Definitely! It’s nearly finished!

What inspires you and what is it like being an independent artist coming off the success from your last album?

Life inspires me! Truly living and riding the waves of life. The highs and lows can be scary and hard to accept but Teenage Renegade is my reminder that I can survive it all.

The most important thing, independent or signed is that you’re able to really write the music that you want to write. I’ve found being independent has allowed Jeff, my manager and I to really hone in on the vision. Everything you’re seeing is all us.

Your hit single Nothing to Regret was certified double-platinum in Australia and has reached over 120M streams, what do you attribute to this massive achievement?

AHhhh that still blows my mind! Thankyou listeners hehe. I think people really connected to the message.

Sometimes we are made to feel like we need so much to be happy when really all we need are our friends, family and to feel free from pressure for a moment. Nothing To Regret is the ode for letting go of the worry and fear.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

I’m loving a lot of Wolf Alice, The Cure, Miley Cyrus, Kate Bush, Stevie Nicks and Tears For Fears.

What do you like to do away from music?

That is a great question! I’ve taken a strong liking to cooking recently which is surprising to even me. I think there’s a real therapy to creating your own version of flavours. I also love being amongst of nature and the comforts of my own home hahaha, and then the other side of me loves a good time out dancing the night away.

Favourite food and place to hang out when you are in Australia?

Ohhhh! Australia has so many incredible places to go and see. I really love Icebergs in Bondi, I think the view of the ocean is so stunning.

Driver Era

by the partae September 13, 2022
written by the partae

Where are you currently based?

We both live in LA. But seems like we haven’t spent much time here recently.

How did you first start playing music?

I sort of played random instruments here and there growing up. When I was super young the first thing I started was piano with my grandpa.

Then I randomly took a few drum lessons a couple years after that. Then there was moments of guitar, but that would come and go for a few more years.

I never really stuck with one instrument and I think that’s why I like producing.

What’s been happening recently?

I’ve been spending some time in the studio while we’re on a little break from touring. I just bought some new headphones for the flights 🙂 Been taking care of my dragon Spark too.

Your latest single ‘Malibu’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

When we showed up to the studio that day everyone had just come from Malibu the day before so it seemed like a good start to a song.

What does Malibu mean to you?

Beach, Rum, Water, Sun

Pretty good version of paradise to me.

You have a new album, please tell us how this came about and what were the influences:

We’re constantly making music so this is just a taste of what’s on our hard drive.

On this Mixtape there’s Dance influence, R&B, Pop, 80s, Funk, and ross likes to say Bedroom Thrash.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with?

Most of the album was recorded in our studio in LA.

Most tracks are written, produced and mixed by Ross and I.

Malibu we did with a friend named Griff.

And Keep Moving Forward Nikka add some nice melodies to 🙂

What do you have planned for this latest album, I see you are currently touring globally…

Yea we got a good amount of touring going on for the next couple months.

We just got the first cut of the video for a song called Fantasy.

Maybe 1 more video for another song soon too.

What can we expect from your upcoming Australian shows?

Good vibes, some cool lights, and us 🙂

Who are you listening to at the moment?

JMSN is cool.

Demons Massane Remix

Speaking Sonar by Summer Salt is a good one

Peach Fuzz by Tyler the creator

I’ve been liking a lot of what blood orange has been doing lately.

What do you like to do away from music?

I like to play hockey

I spend a lot of time doing music. So I am kinda curious what else I could enjoy in this world.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2022 going into 2023?

We got some shows in Japan, AUS, New Zealand, Europe and UK to finish off the year. Then I’ll probably move houses after that.

Favourite food and place to hangout in LA?

There’s this new restaurant called Taisho that’s pretty good. Got nice sake and Sea Bass. Good hang at the bar too.

written by the partae
As we edge closer to Summer good times, Falls is back with important updates for the 2022/23 event that will see Arctic Monkeys, Lil Nas X, Peggy Gou, CHVRCHES, Jamie xx and so many others hit stages across VIC, NSW and WA.
FALLS Downtown Melbourne

Falls’ VIC event is set to relocate to Melbourne for the first time. Falls Downtown Melbourne will now take place at Sidney Myer Music Bowl and surrounds across the same dates 29, 30 and 31 December.

Colac Shire Otway Council approved the planning permit on 30 June for Falls VIC to be held at a new location at Birregurra, but while the planning permit was approved with council, along with support from the local MP and the broader community an application by a small group of locals was made to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) appealing this decision and a hearing date set for February/March 2023, after the event was meant to take place.

Falls Co-Producer Jessica Ducrou said: “Thanks so much for all the support from stakeholders, the venue, artists, all who contribute to Falls and especially our patrons. We’re thrilled that the show will go on at Sidney Myer Music Bowl, ringing in the new year in Downtown Melbourne!”

Falls Downtown Melbourne will feature the full line-up of acts already announced, across two stages in an inner city setting, with all the convenience that provides plus Club Falls, Rancho Relaxo, multiple bars and food trucks and much more! Bring in the 2023 New Year with your crew, as we rediscover the joy of celebrating this milestone together.

Ticket holders who are not able to attend the new venue in Melbourne will be able to apply for a refund from 12pm AEST today until 5pm AEDT Thursday 13 October. All Camping tickets will be automatically refunded from Thursday 29 September 2022. Moshtix will be in touch with all account holders directly with more information, including how to exchange your Birregurra tickets to the Byron event if you would like the full camping festival experience. Please note that refunds or exchanges need to be requested by the purchaser i.e. if a mate purchased your ticket for you, they will also need to request your refund for you.

Tickets for Falls Downtown Melbourne are on sale 9am AEST Wednesday 14 September from Moshtix.

FALLS Byron, North Byron Parklands, 31 Dec – 2 Jan.
Prefer the full immersion camping festival experience? Then Falls Byron is the place for you, with a range of camping options available. Bring your own kit and camp with or without your van or car. If hammering pegs isn’t really your thing, you can Rent a Tent, or treat yourself at Flash Camp, an exclusive glamping village that offers friendly concierge services, luxe bathroom facilities and most importantly a warm and comfy bed.

Plus, there’s morning yoga and pilates, swimming pools, field games, creative space, Shit Olympics and of course that incredible lineup of artists to keep you tuned in!

An extensive program of works is currently underway to prepare North Byron Parklands for Falls Byron in 4 months’ time. An estimated $1M+ will be spent on restoration, additional drainage, ground and roadworks to upgrade the venue for the summer event. Check the North Byron Parklands website for details and updates. Significant upgrades will also be made to venue entry points to allow for a smoother and faster ingress for Falls campers.

FALLS Downtown Fremantle, Fremantle Park, 7 – 8 Jan.
As previously announced, Falls Downtown Fremantle has moved homes to Fremantle Park and Fremantle Arts Centre, a beautiful location as we expand the WA leg of the festival and everything the west has to offer.

Falls Downtown Fremantle’s new home gives you the opportunity to supercharge your Falls outing with one of the new VIP experiences. Roll like a rockstar at Club Falls or really dial it up in a Falls Cabana.

$1 added to each Falls 2022/23 event ticket sold will fund the FEAT. LIVE Solar Slice, a sustainable touring initiative supplying clean power to festival sites and venues, reducing emissions, and buying quality offsets to minimise the impact of live events. FEAT. Live founder Heidi Lenffer said “This moment demands decisive climate leadership from the culture-makers in live music, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to partner with such an iconic institution as Falls to spearhead a courageous emissions reduction plan together.”

Falls acknowledges and pays respect to the past, present and future Traditional Custodians and Elders of this nation and the lands where our festivals are held. Always was, always will be.

Surprise Chef share new single ‘Iconoclasts’

by the partae September 13, 2022
written by the partae

PRAISE FOR SURPRISE CHEF

[On Daylight Savings]…”It’s a warm hug of a record that perfectly encapsulates the unshakeable Melbourne spirit. As the days grow warmer and the evenings get lighter, Surprise Chef are bringing uplifting jazz-funk optimism to a city in need of some love and healing”
NME

“Cooling, jasmine-scented, time-warped instrumentals”
MOJO

“…known for their superbly blissed out jams, matching Curtis Mayfield melodics against Madlib style beats.”
CLASH

“[Money Music] is a bassline-driven mid-tempo tune that catches you from the first note and carries you through all the gorgeous changes.”
Beat Magazine

Naarm/Melbourne instrumental soul and funk five-piece Surprise Chef have shared new single ‘Iconoclasts‘, taken from their forthcoming new album Education & Recreation, out October 14 on Big Crown Records, marking their debut for the lauded Brooklyn-based label.

Following previous singles ‘Money Music‘ and ‘Suburban Breeze‘, ‘Iconoclasts’ is the embodiment of “cinematic soul”. Moody and spacious instrumentation that at times is met with heavy drum beats that send the listener on a trip through their mind. Surprise Chef pull influence from the likes of David Axelrod to The Soulquarians, topping it off with their own distinct flavour.

Surprise Chef’s music is based on evoking mood; their vivid arrangements utilize time and space to build soundscapes that invite the listener into their world. The quintet’s distinct sound pulls from 70s film scores, the funkier side of jazz, and the samples that form the foundation of hip hop. They push the boundaries of instrumental soul and funk with their own approach honed by countless hours in the studio, studying the masters, and perhaps most importantly, the “tyranny of distance” that dictates a unique perspective to their music.

Hailing from just outside of Melbourne, Australia their first two albums, All News Is Good News and Daylight Savings amassed a die-hard fanbase and brought their sound from their home studio to every corner of the globe. The band is now signed to Big Crown Records, joining a lineage of contemporary and classic sounds that have influenced Surprise Chef’s music since their formation in 2017.

Surprise Chef is Lachlan Stuckey on guitar, Jethro Curtin on keys, Carl Lindeberg on bass, Andrew Congues on drums, and Hudson Whitlock—the latest member who does it all from percussion to composing to producing. Their self proclaimed “moody shades of instrumental jazz-funk” have a bit of everything: punchy drums, infectious keys, rhythm guitar you might hear on a Studio One record, and flute lines that could be from a Blue Note session. But when you step back and take in the entirety of their sound and approach, you’ll hear and see a group greater than the sum of its parts.

In many ways Surprise Chef embodies the idiom “the benefits of limits.” They were limited in that there weren’t many people making or talking about instrumental jazz/soul/funk in Southeast Australia, let alone putting out records. This left them to develop their sound and approach in a kind of creative isolation where a small circle of friends and like-minded musicians fed off each other. “Being in Australia, being so far away, we only get glimpses and glances of this music’s origins,” Stuckey says. “But hearing a label like Big Crown was one of the first times we realized you could make fresh, new soul music that wasn’t super retro or just nostalgic.”

This approach is on full display throughout their new album Education & Recreation. Tracks like ‘Velodrome‘ pair chunky drums with an ear-worm synth line that has all the making of something you would find on an Ultimate Breaks & Beats compilation while numbers like ‘Iconoclasts’ show their knack for tasteful use of space. From the crushing intro of ‘Suburban Breeze’ to the floaty mellow bop of ‘Spring’s Theme‘ Surprise Chef has weaved together an album that takes you through peaks and valleys of emotion and provides a vivid soundtrack that will pull you deeper into your imagination. There is a beauty in the vast space for interpretation of instrumental music and they are adding a modern classic to the canon with this new album. Turn on the record and enjoy the ride, wherever it may take you.

Ska Nation 2022 will bring some of the best ska-centric acts to the small regional town called Warrion, just outside Colac, Victoria.

This year’s festival will be headed up by some of Australia’s and the world’s best exponents of Jamaican-inspired music together for a two-day dance party – including one of the originators of ska from Jamaica in Stranger Cole.

Joining Cole will be Los Angeles’ purveyors of the ‘dirty reggae’ sound The Aggrolites, who will also be heading up the festivities, alongside American third-wave ska band Mephiskapheles, Philly ska experts Catbite, Victorian seven headed brash and boisterous ska punk monster The Resignators, and Australians tallest Ska band The Donald Trumpets, among others.

Making its highly-anticipated return for 2022, following last years event with the likes of The Bennies, The Resignators, Loin Groin and more, the massive two-day Ska Nation 2022 celebrates the vibrant ska scene in all its glory.

Taking place on Saturday, November 26 and Sunday, November 27, Ska Nation 2022 is taking to the town of Warrion, two hours out of Melbourne. Just 20 minutes out of Colac, the festival will be nestled between dormant volcanoes and golden plains farms on an acre of the countryside behind the 150-year-old Ti Tree Hotel.

There will be free camping at Meredith Park campgrounds for festival-goers, with regular shuttles as well as camping closer to the venue (subject to council approval) and a variety of B&Bs and hotels in Colac and the surrounding district.

Ska Nation will also be complemented by markets and food trucks.

Ozzy Osbourne Releases Anxiously Awaited New Album ‘Patient Number 9’

PATIENT NUMBER 9

“Patient Number 9 as far as I’m concerned is the best record Osbourne has released since 2001’s Down to Earth.” – Everblack Media

“Was it worth the wait? Fuck yes it was.” – Heavy Magazine

“The Prince of Darkness rides again on Patient Number 9, and it’s a regal adventure from start to finish courtesy of a once-in-a-lifetime talent (and some prodigious friends).” – The Soundcheck

“This album delivers the Prince Of Darkness back to his throne.” – HiFi Way

“…this is pretty much his best effort in decades.” – Loud Online

“Even with the plethora of artists who are all stars in their own right, one thing is for certain — this is Ozzy Osbourne. With thirteen tracks to choose from, there’s more than enough meaty goodness to sink your teeth into.” – Wall Of Sound

“This album is 61 minutes of pure Ozzy bloody Osbourne, long time fans have got so much familiarity to enjoy, new fans have got a smorgasbord of killer intros to just what makes the Prince of Darkness such a God amongst men.” – Hear2Zen

“Ozzy is back! … delivering some amazing strong vocals.” – Amnplify

“… the overall result being the most enjoyable Ozzy solo album since, well, 1991’s high watermark No More Tears.” – Sentinel Daily

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and Grammy®-winning singer and songwriter Ozzy Osbourne proudly presents his anxiously awaited new album, Patient Number 9, out now via Epic Records / Sony Music Australia.

He celebrated its arrival with a powerhouse performance during the Halftime Show of the Los Angeles Rams-Buffalo Bills NFL Kickoff Game last week at Sofi Stadium in Los Angeles, CA. Additionally, he joined forces with SiriusXM for Ozzy Osbourne’s ‘Patient Number 9’ Album Special on Ozzy’s Boneyard. Ozzy, legendary guitarist Zakk Wylde, and album producer Andrew Watt spoke to host Billy Morrison at-length about the new record in addition to performing select cuts and answering questions by SiriusXM hosts and subscribers.

Right out of the gate, Patient Number 9 has incited unanimous critical applause. Consequence of Sound proclaimed, “From start to finish, Patient Number 9 is an inspired and consistent Ozzy studio offering,” and Metal Hammer rated it “4-out-of-5 Stars” and attested, “It sounds like the Prince of fucking Darkness having an absolutely smashing time, with a bunch of his mates and, weirdly, a newfound sense of artistic ambition.” The Guardian also scored it “4-out-of-5 Stars,” while Revolver Magazine assured, “this heavy-metal patient only sounds recharged, not ready for any farewells or swan songs just yet.”

Between the singles Patient Number 9 [feat. Jeff Beck], Degradation Rules [feat. Tony Iommi], and Nothing Feels Right [feat. Zakk Wylde], the album has already eclipsed 10 million total streams and counting.

The new album marks the first release since Osbourne’s critically acclaimed, worldwide, chart-topping 2020 album Ordinary Man. Produced by Andrew Watt (who handled the same duties on Ordinary Man), the new album marks Osbourne’s 13th solo studio album. It’s heavy, it’s hard-hitting, it’s historic–it’s everything you’d want from an Ozzy Osbourne record and maybe more. Working with producer Watt for the second time, Ozzy welcomed dynamic A-list featured guests. For the first time ever, Black Sabbath co-founder, guitarist, and riff-master Tony Iommi appears on an Ozzy solo album. The record also boasts guitarists Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Mike McCready of Pearl Jam, and longstanding righthand man and six-string beast Zakk Wylde who plays on the majority of the tracks. For the bulk of the album, Chad Smith of Red Hot Chili Peppers held down drums, while the late Taylor Hawkins of Foo Fighters appears on three songs. Old friend and one-time OZZY band member Robert Trujillo of Metallica plays bass on most of the album’s tracks, with Duff McKagan of Guns N’ Roses and Chris Chaney of Jane’s Addiction supplying bass on a few songs.

PATIENT NUMBER 9 TRACK LISTING:

01. Patient Number 9 (feat. Jeff Beck)
02. Immortal (feat. Mike McCready)
03. Parasite (feat. Zakk Wylde)
04. Mr. Darkness (feat. Zakk Wylde)

Multi-Platinum R3HAB Remakes Daddy Yankee’s Famed Latin Pop Hit Into Your Newest Party Anthem “Mas Gasolina” with Ryan Arnold & N.F.I. Out Now on Spinnin’ Records

by the partae September 10, 2022
written by the partae

Artists: R3HAB, Ryan Arnold, N.F.I
Title: Mas Gasolina
Label: Spinnin’ Records

Download / Stream

R3HAB has been on fire this summer, and he’s keeping it going with his new dancefloor-oriented remake of Daddy Yankee‘s 2004 hit in collaboration with British DJ/producer Ryan Arnold and mysterious producers’ collective N.F.I. Known for his production prowess and the wide range of music genres he can successfully create in his studio, R3HAB keeps the track true to form for the modern day by adding stabbing synths, driving tech house kick drums, and bouncy basslines. Combined with the well-known catchy vocal hook, “Mas Gasolina” is a shoo-in for those nights when you want to get down and light up the dancefloor. It follows R3HAB‘s NFT-fueled collaboration with Laidback Luke “Weekend On A Tuesday” and the official Tomorrowland anthem “Worlds On Fire,” which he produced together with Afrojack, and an official remix for Sia. The Dutch/Moroccan artist is showcasing again his ability to produce and successfully blend together a wide range of music genres, from the mainstage festival dance floor fillers to radio airwaves-friendly crossovers.

“I’ve been inspired by all the great people I’ve met and celebrated with this festival season, and wanted to put out a record that felt energizing and familiar. ‘Mas Gasolina‘ came together quickly and I’m excited to share it now. It’s bass driven and fast and pulls you into the moment, but reminds you of the good old days. I hope this will bring people back in time like it did for me.” – R3HAB

“I was always a huge fan of the original, so with ‘Mas Gasolina,’ we wanted to amplify that energy and create something really special. I’m absolutely buzzing to finally get this track out there after seeing the reaction to it in my live sets – and working with R3HAB and N.F.I just adds to the excitement.” – Ryan Arnold

“I had so much fun recreating this classic with Ryan and R3HAB. Playing it out at gigs is going to be epic!” – N.F.I

R3HAB

Multi-Platinum DJ and producer Fadil El Ghoul, better known as R3HAB, has been trailblazing his way through dance music for the past fifteen years. From his breakthrough remixes for Rihanna, Drake, Taylor Swift, Calvin Harris, to anthems such as Platinum-certified “All Around The World (La La La)” and “Lullaby,” to his collaborations with the likes of Ava Max, ZAYN, Luis Fonsi, Sean Paul, and more, R3HAB has proven to be one of the most forward-thinking artists in the game. His work has collected over 8B streams to date, including 1.1B in 2021 alone. R3HAB founded his label CYB3RPVNK in 2016, which has passed 4B streams across platforms since its inception. R3HAB continues to evolve and diversify his sound by working with artists around the globe, pushing the boundaries of dance music as he collaborates across genres and languages. He is Spotify‘s Most Discovered Artist, one of Spotify’s top 200 most streamed artists, ranked #12 on prestigious DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJs chart, and has earned over 70 Gold and Platinum certificates. R3HAB has embarked on multiple sold-out worldwide tours and was the first dance music artist to sell out 15 consecutive shows in China. Ryan Arnold plays to thousands of people every week at the U.K.‘s biggest venues, from Ministry Of Sound, The Warehouse Leeds, and various PRYZM clubs across the country to Rise Festival in the French Alps. Building rapport with crowds wherever he performs, Ryan creates special moments that are talked about. Ryan‘s productions continue to go from strength to strength. After the thrilling debut single ‘Imagine‘ came the heavily supported ‘When I’m Alone‘ along with his own reworks from some of the biggest artists around like Drake & Central Cee. He’s one of the most exciting DJ / producer talents to look out for in 2022 and beyond. On the other hand, N.F.I is a collection of ideas formed during many late-night sessions in a recording studio at a North London industrial estate. Having written and produced several hit records for the likes of Cheat Codes, Steve Aoki, Meghan Trainor, and Sigala, the talents behind N.F.I want to fill the dance floor with their own style of hypnotic beats that drip personality and attitude.

Nicky Romero Joins Forces with W&W for Their 3rd collaboration Ever – Highly Anticipated Festival Track “Hot Summer Nights.” Out Now on Protocol Recordings

Artists: Nicky Romero vs. W&W
Title: Hot Summer Nights
Label: Protocol Recordings

Download / Stream

The titans of electronic dance music join forces via Nicky Romero and W&W‘s new track “Hot Summer Nights,” their highly anticipated mainstage anthem. Opening with sultry vocals and soaring melodies, Romero and W&W quickly up the ante with big room-inspired basslines and the sensible energy of progressive house music. Just like the title predicts, the track is a testament to those nights that will go down in history, dancing with beautiful friends and strangers all on the same vibe-to live in the moment and hope the night never ends. Both Nicky and W&W have been playing it in their sets this summer, e.g., at Tomorrowland, where Romero brought his Dutch fellow duo on stage as a surprise guests, so the official release of “Hot Summer Nights” is one the fans have been waiting for. Nicky Romero and W&W have previously collaborated on 2018’s “Ups & Downs” (34M+ streams on Spotify) on Protocol and last year’s “We’re Still Young (15M+ streams) on W&W‘s Rave Culture, so “Hot Summer Nights” makes their 3rd collaboration ever.

After taking the world by storm with early hits such as “Legacy” with Krewella and the #1 single “I Could Be The One” with Avicii, Nicky Romero quickly proved that his talent is ever-evolving and here to stay. After launching his Protocol Recordings imprint in 2012, the renowned performer, producer, and label head continued his personal successes with a string of high-profile releases, ranging from collaborations with Armin van Buuren, David Guetta, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, W&W, Timmy Trumpet and Steve Aoki to remixes for the likes of Robin Schulz, Kygo, Rita Ora, Steve Aoki, Martin Garrix, Jess Glynne and more. While showcasing his label’s roster via his weekly Protocol Radio show, Nicky Romero continues to innovate and evolve, and with his annual “Nicky Romero & Friends” ADE showcase and the launch of Monocule alter-ego, he keeps proving his ability to turn into gold everything he touches.

After meeting up in 2007, Willem van Hanegem and Ward van der Harst came together to form W&W and haven’t looked back since. The Dutch DJ and production duo have transcended the boundaries of genres and traversed the world with their globally acclaimed music and iconic live performances, becoming one of the most sought-after duos the world of electronic music has to offer. As DJs, W&W have been dominating dance floors and festivals across the globe for years on end. Voted #14 in DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJs poll in 2018, 2020 and 2021, they continually perform at leading festivals such as Tomorrowland and EDC Las Vegas and even had their own headlining tour the same year. W&W continue to prove their status as innovators and tastemakers in the scene under their alias NWYR, where they release blistering productions and live sets from their trance-inspired roots. They also curate music for their brand-new label, Rave Culture, which includes hosting their own bi-weekly radio show on Dutch broadcasting station SLAM!, which has gained them over 300,000 listeners per show plus coverage across North America via Sirius XM. Now shifting into a new phase with a tidal wave of new productions and incinerating live sets, the rise of their new Rave Culture label and the impact of their NWYR alias, W&W are cementing their place amongst dance music’s top acts in signature style: transcending boundaries and never looking back.

Surf Shop Cops (Perth) drop killer ‘Constant State’ Album

Surf Shop Cops release killer debut album ‘Constant State’

https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/surfshopcops/constant-state

Surf Shop Cops debut album, ‘Constant State’ follows a coming-of-age narrative. Songwriter Michael Slitenbachs reflects on the hard truths of growing up, and the things he doesn’t like about his younger self, to come out the other end of the ten tracks a better adjusted, more optimistic, and a much happier person.

The influence of bands like Amyl and the Sniffers, WAAX, and even Midnight Oil are all present, but it’s the unbridled intensity of the performance, the outpouring of emotion in the lyrics, and the enormous production that demands attention.

Musically, you can hear a mix of early 2000’s style emo, and indie rock, which carry the relatable lyrics with bounce, swagger, and sing-along hooks in spades. Surf Shop Cops debut record is worth your time.

Augustine ‘Slow Train’ Premiere

by the partae September 9, 2022
written by the partae
Augustine has released the darkly atmospheric “Slow Train” from her upcoming album “Neither Nightmares Nor Dreams Come True”.

Offering a melancholic and intimate dark folk that sounds both familiar and strangely unique; Augustine’s music is equally delicate and powerful –  it envelops as much as it confronts. Her noteworthy first album (The Devil in Me, 2016), paints with gentle, somber brushes the picture of her obsessions: failure, dreaming, longing and love. She now returns with a darker, more asserted second opus; Neither Nightmares Nor Dreams Come True is a haunting musical experience, a proposition of wider scope, still carried by Augustine’s distinctive and poignant voice. Her meticulously crafted music draws from multiple influences, from dark wave to rock and folk, with elements of experimental music and medieval soundscapes.

FONDA with co-founder Tim McDonald

by the partae September 8, 2022
written by the partae

Photography: Juan Castro

We sat down with Tim McDonald the co-founder of Mexican masterpiece FONDA.

Where are you currently based?

Our support office for Fonda is in Richmond but I live Elwood, which is a lovely little community.

You’re the co-founder of the Mexican Restaurant chain ‘Fonda’, how did the concept for Fonda first come about?

Dave and I were just talking one day and just realised there was no one offer a fast, casual, fresh Mexican experience. You either had to go to maccas or dress up and go to full restaurant and then if you wanted Mexican you were getting very heavy, greasy stodgy food, there was nothing that was fresh and fast. So we went for a bit of a research trip to Mexico for inspiration and when we got back we just got stuck right into it.

Please tell us about how you first became involved in hospitality:

I worked in a few cafes ect when I was younger but that was the extent of my knowledge, this was our first big leap.

Please tell us about the ethos behind Fonda:

The Fonda ethos is Mi Casa Su Casa, which we feel embodies how we treat our staff, like our family, and how we treat our customers, like guests in our own home. We drive Mi Csa Su Casa in everything we do and is often the phrase that we bring out when we are making decisions about the business, if it doesn’t fit within that ethos then we don’t think it will work.

What do you think has been the key to Fonda’s success?

The people. All day everyday it’s the people. Without a great team, none of this would be possible. Our team is as dedicated as we are to Fonda.

Fonda is currently located across Melbourne and Sydney, do you have plans to expand to other states?

We are definitely looking to expand and have been doing a bit of research in the sunshine coast and Brisbane, so watch this space…

Which dishes and drinks do you recommend for a Fonda newbie?

There are a number of ways you can go here, I think it’s best to be a bit methodical about it. Kick things off with a corn, our corn has been a bit of a staple on our menu for years now so that’s a must. Then I’d probably say go to the fish taco that’s a crowd favourite. After those two snacky items I’d finish it off with a chicken or pork quesadilla. Beverage wise, it’s margs, you gotta have a marg and if you are marg beginner start with maybe our watermelon or mango house flavours and then you can progress to the traditional.

Really it’s always best to share our food, then you get a bit of everything

What do you hope that your customers’ typical night out at Fonda might look like?

We want all of our Fondas to be a place where people connect, we want to bring people together for a feel-good shared experience; great food, great drinks & a great vibe.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Everything and anything to be honest. I love a bit of country love a good crime podcast but most of the time I’m listening to wiggles to keep the kids happy.

What’s planned for 2023 and beyond?

Big big things, we want to continue to expand at a steady pace and of course continue to ensure our teams are our number one focus along the way.
