Billie Eilish – Melbourne – September 21, 2022

by the partae September 23, 2022
written by the partae

Beautiful words: Darren Chan

American singer/songwriter Billie Eilish returns to Melbourne after more than three years. Her exponential rise in popularity saw her performing the first of 4 nights on the Melbourne leg of her Australian tour.

Diehard fans screamed at deafening levels when Billie appeared amidst a wash of

red lighting opening with “Bury a Friend”.

She screams “Melbourne are you ready?!!” was just reiteration of the 15,000 strong crowd more than willing to partake in the audio visual extravaganza the next two hours would bring.

A minimalist stage set up with a walkway and giant ramp helped create a visual canvas for each song. From the backdrop of flames and red lighting of “Therefore I Am”, the oceanic themed “Ilomilo”, to the environment themed  “All the Good Girls go to Hell”, every song had a visual wow factor.

A moment was taken for musical partner Finneas to join Billie at the front of the stage for the acoustic song “TV”. Billie dons a guitar  and sings “I Love You / Your Power” in her airy vocal style ending with dual harmonic guitar lines with her brother.

The LED backdrop distracts the crowd for a minute before Billie appears floating on an elevated platform at the back of the arena. In a sea of phone torches, she stretches out her hand symbolising her connection with the crowd.

She’s conscious of her rise to fame and takes several moments to acknowledge her appreciation for everyone. She seems to also take on a duty of care for those attending her show – taking a mindfulness moment with some deep breathing.

Billie only takes short moments to bring things down a notch before ramping up again. She had stage presence to captivate the crowd, and they were with her every step of the way.

Jumping around like a metal front person, she concluded the night with the energy expending “Bad Guy”, then serenaded everyone with “Happier Than Ever” as the entire arena rained down in confetti.

It was evident a lot of creative thought and well timed execution had been put into the show. The combination of lighting, staging, LED projected imaging, musical arrangements, and performance delivered a dream-like cinematic experience that fans and even those not attuned to Eilish’s music would never forget.

Ella Therese Shows Age Is Just A Number With New Single ‘THIRTYFOUR’

“ella might be singing about grieving but it sounds like she’s turned on her heel, walked out of the room and wiped the issue off her shoulder on the way out.”

“Confusion comes with a lot of energy attached to it. It’s made up of a variety of components that makes the whole thing stand out. Alt-pop productions like this one encapsulate the sense of innovation and originality that defines alt-pop today.”
(Lefuturewave) [About ‘Confusion’]

“As an independent singer, Ella Therese has embarked on a path in a genuine way. Beyond question, her best asset is her singing voice but what is worth more than gold are her magnificent songwriting skills.”

Stream ‘THIRTYFOUR’

Calling out the emphasis on youth and the perpetuating ideal that there is a ‘limited time’ to achieve success, new song ‘THIRTYFOUR’ (Out September 23) by WA artist Ella Therese serves as an unapologetic celebration of breaking down barriers to fulfil your dreams, and one that she hopes will encourage conversation about shared experiences.

Making her dazzling debut in 2020 with ‘Feelings’, Ella has already played WAMFest 2021, Fremantle Arts Centre alongside Banjo Lucia, and had Siobhan Cotchin and Indoor Fins play her last single launch.

Following the 2021 release of her intoxicating second single ‘Confusion’, comes new alt-rock track ‘THIRTYFOUR’. In an empowering move to maintain ownership and artistry, Ella will also be releasing the song as an NFT.

This is a soulful and arresting mantra that gets straight to the core of its message with plenty of heart and a catchy hook. ‘THIRTYFOUR’ sees Ella embracing her power, and demonstrating that we can resist and liberate ourselves from the shackles of expectation by calling out the bullsh*t, and doing what we want with confidence. The song also universally speaks to demanding more, maintaining high standards, and chasing your ambitions – regardless of the limitations society may try to place on us. Driven by a strong beat and an understated soft alt-rock sound, Ella’s voice and the message it delivers are given full reign to be heard loud and clear – as they deserve to be.

Written in response to the initial feeling of being ‘too old’ to start her music career, particularly as a female artist, ‘THIRTYFOUR’ is poised to spark conversations with its audience.

Set for release during the month of her 34th birthday, Ella elaborates on the track:

“It’s never too late. Never too late to do exactly what sets your soul on fire. Age doesn’t dictate what happens next. I’ve just turned thirty-four years old and I used to be worried about starting music later in life, but I’ve learnt to embrace my unique perspective on the world. ‘THIRTYFOUR’ is about feeling empowered, limitless and perfectly happy with your age, and embracing the distinct qualities you have to offer the world. I expect more from the world, more from myself, and I’m celebrating that quality in ‘THIRTYFOUR’. I’m not going to settle for anything less than absolutely everything I could possibly aim for.“

This insightful, unstoppable drive coupled with her knack for creating engaging indie/ alt-pop music is garnering plenty of attention, with Ella Therese already receiving support from the likes of The Music, Triple J, Scenestr, Lefuturewave, ElectroWow, The Sunday Times, and more.

‘THIRTYFOUR’ by Ella Therese kicks off on September 23, and she’s only just getting started, with her next single due out in 2023.

Beloved alt-pop indie band Joan & The Giants from Boorloo/Perth are finally releasing their debut EP ‘Me & You’ via Tomboi Records on September 23, and it is one that fans old and new will embrace and hold dear for a long time to come.

Following a handful of stellar single releases, Joan & The Giants’ long-awaited debut EP sees musical and romantic partners Grace Newton-Wordsworth and Aaron Birch with band mates Riley Sutton and Liam Olsen hone their craft with a stronger pop-production sensibility, that collides beautifully with their folk-informed anthemic-indie roots, heartfelt lyricism and that hint of magic that can’t quite be put into words – but is captured perfectly with music.

Grace speaks more on the inspiration and themes explored:

“The ‘Me & You’ EP is a collection of deeply personal songs that capture moments shared by two people. Stories centered around love, rebellion and definitely a touch of heartbreak. To me they are all songs that share vulnerable moments that we’ve personally gone through in the last few years, and we hope they connect with those who listen.”

Opening with strong emotive indie-pop is ‘The Weekend’, a rebellion against modern grind culture and the mentality of ‘living for the weekend’. The song reflects the band’s new mantra to live every day with the same enthusiasm: live like you’re 17, fall in love but never fall in line, and spend time with someone whenever it feels right – because why should we only reserve our joy for days that the capitalist calendar dictates? With a melody that seeps in and sticks, earnest drums and cherry-sweet vocals, this is a memorable tune dripping in honeyed rhythms.

Next, we’re drawn into a stripped-back, delicate ballad – ‘Slow Motion’. It could easily soundtrack a climactic indie romance movie moment where the two main characters are alone on a dancefloor, transfixed by each other, as the world fades away behind them. A magnetic track that shines with its earnest lyricism, enveloping chorus and the serenading strum of an acoustic guitar.

Then, we’re met with a fork in the road via a sobering, piano-led heartbreak anthem of equally cinematic proportions. ‘Hardest Part’ was lead singer Grace’s first co-write done without bandmate and romantic partner Aaron, and it gets right to it with raw and hard feelings. The standout lyric in the song is ‘the hardest part of living is knowing whether I’m supposed to hold on or let go’ – bound to inspire goosebumps.

Wrapping us up in a warm embrace, and returning us to an assured place of love, ‘Home Song’ is a reminder not to take anything for granted. Written as a love letter to Aaron during a difficult period of loss, the song’s heartbeat percussion and folksy guitar melody swell together, uplifting Grace’s soulful vocals.

Featuring a nod to Aaron’s obsession with Blink 182’s ‘I Miss You’ with the line ‘We’re like Jack and Sally walking through the haunted night’, ‘Centerfold’ is a pretty indie-pop track about the unwavering determination to stand by one another through thick and thin, while striving to keep the spark of romance alive.

Unsurprisingly, the talented group’s previous releases have seen plenty of support. ‘Home Song’ premiered via Triple J (Home & Hosed) and was added to Triple J Unearthed rotation, played on KCRW (US) and spent three weeks in AMRAP Metro Charts. Joan & The Giants have also seen support from Tone Deaf, Music Feeds, Scenestr, AU Review, AAA Backstage, Aus Music Scene as well as community radio stations.

Get swept up in the musical magic of Joan & The Giants when their dazzling debut EP ‘Me & You’ is released on September 23.

The EP release will be celebrated with a special launch event on Friday, September 30, featuring special guests Menagerie Choir, King Ibis, Young Robin and local art stalls – details below:

HAYLEY MARSTEN releases gorgeous new single BITTERSWEET AT BEST

by the partae September 22, 2022
written by the partae

Hailing from Central Queensland, country pop artist Hayley Marsten has wasted no time in wrapping audiences around the country up in her tales of heartache, rediscovery and poignancy.

Returning with her first piece of new music for 2022 in ‘Bittersweet At Best’, the artist repositions herself as one of the East Coast’s exciting fresh voices. For newcomers, the single is a gorgeous track wrapped around a central narrative of a relationship transitioning from happiness to sadness; the concept of change being at the core of the song.

Following on from ‘I’m Fine, Thanks’ earlier this year, and her  impactful 2021 single ‘Drowning Myself’, which cemented Marsten as a dynamic artist who could most certainly match the buzz her debut, breakthrough, album Spectacular Heartbreak conjured in 2019, ‘Bittersweet At Best’ is another confident step forward for the Golden Guitar and Queensland Music Award nominee.

Recorded at Brisbane’s Hunting Ground Studios, ‘Bittersweet At Best’ itself was initially written back in 2020. Working on the song in the studio, Marsten worked with Cody McWaters (King Stingray, The Chats), Kieran Stevenson, Michael Moko and Dan Sugars – the latter who also worked on ‘Drowning Myself’ – on added production duties. McWaters mixed ‘Bittersweet At Best’, before the final cut was mastered by King Willy Sound (Gotye, Spacey Jane).

Says Marsten of the experience, creating ‘Bittersweet At Best’ with such a dream team of musicians and creatives added depth and ultimately, elevated the final product to a perfect level.

“Making this song was so easy, I knew from the beginning I wanted the keys to be the main character and we built it from there. My production team are some of the people who know me best and really understood the feeling I wanted this song to give people. We really focused on trying to make it feel as tinged with melancholy as possible. When we added the strings and Melody Moko’s beautiful backing vocals it was just the perfect little golden feeling song to me.”

HAYLEY MARSTEN

In a relatively short amount of time, Hayley Marsten has become a popular name on the alt-country and country-pop circuits. The release of Spectacular Heartbreak earned the songwriter nominations for Alt Country Album Of The Year at the Golden Guitar Awards, as well as Country Work Of The Year at the 2020 Queensland Music Awards.

A completely crowd-funded album, Spectacular Heartbreak clocked over half a million streams in its first year, while Marsten’s presence as live performer solidified courtesy of successful headline runs and prime slots supporting the likes of Fanny Lumsden, Troy Cassar-Daley, Imogen Clark, Clare Bowditch and Deborah Conway. Selected as part of the BIGSOUND50 crop of artists in 2020 – a selected cohort of Australian names to watch – Marsten made good on the investment from the industry and has since become a weapon of a performer.

Pennywise – Forum Theatre, Melbourne 18 September 2022

by the partae September 21, 2022
written by the partae

Photography: Juan Castro

Forming back in 1988 and hailing from Hermosa Beach, Pennywise alongside fellow Californian punk rockers Circle Jerks and Civic gave Melbourne’s Forum Theatre exactly what they had been waiting for.

Circle Jerks hit the LA South Bay scene back in 1979, playing a huge role in the innovation and development of Hardcore Punk. It was a true pleasure to see Pennywise and the Circle Jerks on the same bill.

Forming in 2018, Melbourne’s very own Civic opened the show with a huge mix of tasteful glam/classic rock hits.

Saytek

by the partae September 21, 2022
written by the partae
Hey Saytek, thank-you for joining us. Firstly, before we start, how has your summer been?
Its been truly amazing for live shows!  I have performed in Berlin, London, Amsterdam, Ibiza, Trogir, New Delhi, Mumbai, Frankfurt, Oslo, Zürich , Hasting,  Kassel, Manchester, Wismar, Prague, Monchengladbach, Magdeburg and more! Just planning Autumn and winter now!

All of the tracks in this EP are live recordings from Summer Love Festival. Could you tell us a little bit more about this?
All the music I release is chopped directly out my live sets, whilst a lot of artists make tracks then work out how to perform them live I work the other way round with all the music I create being made for the live show! I release a lot of stuff that is recorded at gigs as well! I did a live on tour series on my label Cubism so it made perfect sense to record the tracks I recorded in the Superfreq tent at Summer love on the Superfreq label.

You released an album on Carl Cox’s ‘Awesome Soundwave’ label at the end of last year. Do you have any plans for another album?
Yes that was actually my second album on the label! The have released over 25 of my tracks so far. We have already spoken about a possible third album coming in the next year or so.

Who was your favourite DJ growing up?
I loved Jeff Mills and Richie Hawtin when he was doing Deck FX 909

Are there any current artists that inspire you?
There are loads I regularly listen to Drumcomplex’s radio show its always great techno on there. But also a lot of DJs I hear out and about when touring hearing them do their thing in a club is always a great source of inspiration.

Outside of electronic music, what other types of music do you listen to?
I love a lot of music from 80’s synth pop to dub to 60’s 70’s rock music 80s & 90’s hiphop, classical and Jazz. I am a massive music lover!

What equipment did you use to record this E.P?
My set up is as follows:Novation Peak, Roland MC707, Pioneer V10, Novation Impusle 25 Korg Kaos, Pad Korg Volca Kick , Macbook Pro, Ableton, Focusrite audio interface REM Midi Clock, Pioneer RMX1000

For me its the perfect combo of a great groove box, a very powerful synth, Ableton & Controller and DJ style FX. It means my set is very hands on but there is no scrolling through menus everything is done by touch. It gives me ultimate control and allows me to improvise, but also arrange everything in real time.

What is your favourite bit of gear when you are writing tracks?
Everything is equally as important as everything else it all works together to make one instrument!

Do you have plans to do any more releases this year?
Yeah a few on the Horizon with singles on R&S and Awesome Soundwave and a 5 Track Vinyl EP on a new label from Warsaw called Acid Works.

Last Question! Have you got any gigs planned that you would like to tell us about? I have quite a few but can’t wait to return to Fabrik Madrid for Carl Cox invites on the 1st of October! Its gonna be rocking 🙂

FRAN ‘THREW IT ALL AWAY’

by the partae September 20, 2022
written by the partae

Photo: @mitchllove

Started on a grand piano in Fran’s home studio and finished under the guidance of Slumberjack’s multifaceted Morgan Then; Threw It All Away is Fran’s first offering on Lab Six Records.

Opening with piano chords and a Kanye West inspired vocal that forms the song’s main motif, the track proceeds with snappy drums played in a ¾ pattern and lead vocals giving the track a timeless feeling reminiscent of Portishead and Massive Attack.

Threw It All Away is a modern take on classic Trip Hop and thanks to some very clever production it is one track you definitely do not want to throw away.

Benjamino

by the partae September 20, 2022
written by the partae
Where are you currently based?

Currently based in Wollongong, Australia (about 1hr south of Sydney). It’s a beautiful coastal city and a great place to write and produce music.

How did you first start playing music?
Around the age of 7 I started working out my favourite melodies by ear on the home piano and it all grew from there.

What’s been happening recently?

A lot of writing and recording! I work at a studio in Wollongong called DROP where we record other artists and write production music, so that takes up most of my time.

Your latest single ‘Chasing My Tail’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

At the end of last year I bought a new digital synth – an ASM Hyrdasynth, and on the first day it arrived at my place I played the opening synth line on one of the presets and the song developed from there.

How did you go about writing Chasing My Tail?

I had a night recording session cancelled at the last minute in January so decided to use the time to write the majority of this song. That night I wrote all of the sections, most of the lyrics and the big guitar line in the middle of the song, so it was fairly productive!

What does this single mean to you?

I feel like it is a step in a new direction for my writing and production style. This year I have focused more on vocal melodies and hooks and this is the first of that bunch that I have released. Lyrically, the song is essentially about a quarter-life crisis so it’s obviously very personal haha

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with?

I recorded the drums, synths, bass and guitars with Kieran Parker (another producer at DROP and my live drummer) at DROP, the first time we’d done so and we were very excited to use a lot of very fancy mics. The backing vocals were recorded with Julie Oguey, she came up with most of the arrangement and it added a new dynamic to the track. My ever faithful horn players all recorded their parts at home and sent them to me. The track was mixed by Glenn Lumanta and mastered by Jason Martin.

How did you approach the recording/production process?

I tried to lean into my love for synths and indietronica a little more. I also experimented with the structure so that it wasn’t a standard pop song route.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Over the last few months I’ve been obsessed with Victoria Monet’s album JAGUAR as well as Sammy Rae and the Friends new singles. I was lucky enough to record Arlo Park’s live show in Sydney recently for Triple J so I have been listening to her a lot since then.

What do you like to do away from music?

I’m a sport fanatic, both watching and playing (when I can, gotta be careful of those precious fingers).

What’s planned for the remainder of 2022 going into 2023?

I have a lot of songs ready to record, so that will be a goal for the rest of this year. Trying my best to book as many shows as I can too, hopefully will be able to play around more of Australia now.

Favourite food and place to hangout?
Anything Italian. Apart from hanging at home, I really like hanging out at just about any cafe.

PSTCRDS

by the partae September 20, 2022
written by the partae

Where are you currently based?
We’re currently based in Newcastle, Australia.

How did the band form?
The band formed from me (Stove) and Henry being in a previous band together and bonding over a love of pop punk and emo music, and when that band eventually separated they decided to try writing some different stuff together and PSTCRDS was born.

What’s been happening recently?
Recently we just put out a new single ‘What We Dwell On’, accompanied by a music video shot by Crow River Visuals and we’re currently supporting that release through a tour with Synge from Sydney.

Your latest single ‘What We Dwell On’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?
The idea for WWDO was mostly to try something a little different, almost towards an ‘anthem’ vibe of sorts, and something people could really dance to. The influences came from a range of different stuff we had been listening to, bands like Stand Atlantic, Youth Fountain and some pop artists like Taylor Swift, Peach PRC etc

How did you go about writing What We Dwell On and what does this single mean to you?
We actually had an original version of the song that sounded completely different, but in the studio we decided to go in a different direction and try something new that we hadn’t done before.

The single is based around the loss of a relationship, be that a friendship or a romantic one, and the single being so different from what we’ve done in the past feels like a good way to emphasise moving forward from where you were to where you want to be.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with?
We recorded the single in late July, and we worked with Chris Lalic (Windwaker), who we’ve worked with for every release we’ve done so far.

How did you approach the recording process?
We always try to approach the recording process with an open mind to trying new things and changing as much as we feel we need to. There’s always a 90% finished demo from the start, but several times now we’ve completely scrapped songs and rewritten them, so we always try to stay open to any and all ideas as we go.

Who are you listening to at the moment?
I can’t speak for the other boys, but I’ve been listening to a lot of heavier stuff lately, which is interesting considering the sound of WWDO, but I’ve been loving Knocked Loose’s A Tear in the Fabric of Life, the new singles from The Gloom in the Corner and also Eat Your Heart Out’s new album!

What’s planned for the remainder of 2022 going into 2023?
Mostly we’re just aiming to play as many shows as we can and hopefully write some more music to put something out next year.

Favourite food and place to hangout?
I’m obsessed with Mexican food, so my favourite place to eat is always Mad Mex, but in terms of places to hangout I tend to spend a lot of time at home with my roommates and just kicking around Newcastle really.

JUNO Award-Winning Indie-Folk Band The East Pointers Announce New EP House of Dreams To Arrive On September 30th New Single “Save Your Lonely” Out Now

by the partae September 17, 2022
written by the partae

Toronto, ON – JUNO Award-winning Canadian pop-folk band The East Pointers, are excited to announce the release of their highly anticipated new EP House of Dreams, set to arrive on September 30th via Nettwerk Music Group on all streaming platforms.

House of Dreams was born out of pandemic downtime and a desire to always be pushing forward. With the cancellation of touring in 2020, Koady Chaisson, Jake Charron and Tim Chaisson of The East Pointers started working on new music with the help of their friend and member of The Trews, Colin MacDonald. After narrowing down over twenty songs written to the best seven tracks, the EP was brought to life virtually with the help of producer Derek Hoffman (Arkells, The Trews, Silverstein).

In January 2022, the band suffered an unimaginable loss with the sudden passing of beloved member Koady Chaisson, and the new music was brought to an abrupt halt. Tim and Jake met in the weeks that followed and both knew, almost without saying it, that they had to carry on and bring the new music to fans.

“The “House Of Dreams” EP is a collection of 7 tracks that we wrote while sidelined during the pandemic. After eight years of solid touring, it was our first experience being grounded on Prince Edward Island as a unit. We recorded them with our producer, Derek Hoffman, before our bandmate and best friend, Koady, sadly passed away. Koady was probably the most excited about all of these tracks, so we’re channeling that enthusiasm as we release it to the world,” said Jake Charron and Tim Chaisson of The East Pointers.

Keeping Koady’s spirit alive, House of Dreams will push new boundaries with the same driving trad instrumental hooks the band has become known for in tracks such as “When I Had You,” “Happy As I’ve Never Been” and “Kayla, For Me,” a song about loss and the memories that you try to hang onto when dreams are suddenly taken away.

The EP’s first track, “The House of Dreams,” is special to the band as it is one of Koady’s compositions that came from their writing sessions, originally titled “Quarantine Sessions #2”.

“The location of Koady’s dream-come-true home is a little cottage with a spectacular view of the ocean on the Eastern Shores of Prince Edward Island. We spent many days here as a band, hanging out, writing music, and dreaming up plans for the future,” said Jake Charron of The East Pointers.

Also included on the EP, will be the recently released singles “I Saw Your Ghost”, “Stronger Than You Know,” and “Save Your Lonely,” an upbeat and decidedly folk-pop tune about the hardships endured by a touring musician and feeling the distance from someone back home.

Since forming in 2014, The East Pointers have remained furiously energetic, musically complex, and technically brilliant. They’re grounded in family, as the seventh generations of traditional PEI and Ontario-based Celtic players and writers, and have effortlessly parlayed into the folk-pop arena.

The band gained international recognition as musical trailblazers, and continued to rise to success after releasing their debut album, Secret Victory, in late 2015 and performing in Canada, the United States and Australia. The East Pointers have also received achievements including a JUNO Award for Traditional Roots Album of the Year in 2017 for Secret Victory, a nomination for Traditional Roots Album of the Year for What We Leave Behind at the 2019 JUNO Awards, the Canadian Folk Music Award for Ensemble of the Year at the 12th Canadian Folk Music Awards in 2016, and nominations for Instrumental Group of the Year and Canadian Folk Music Award as Ensemble of the Year again in 2018.

In addition to the new EP, The East Pointers are also getting ready to present the Harvest Home Festival, set to take place on September 23rd and 24th at the Rollo Bay Fiddle Grounds in Prince Edward Island. For more information on the festival, visit here.

The Chats – Forum Theatre Melbourne – September 16 2022

by the partae September 17, 2022

Words: Chris Brooks – Photography: Juan Castro

Beloved South East Queensland legends The Chats tore up Melbourne’s Forum theatre with trail blazing support from USA Mean Jeans & Melbourne locals The Prize.

The Chats smashed through 20 something, bone crunching, high voltage, punk rock classics. With barely a moment for breath, every song seemed to be pushing close to 2x speed or more compared to recorded versions, very reminiscent of early Ramones shows.

Filled with bogan mullets and sweaty flannelettes, The Forum crowd lapped up every sound screeching decibel that The Chats dished out.  If you haven’t already, do yourself a favour and catch The Chats on their GET FUCKED world album tour!

Kosling Returns To Protocol Recordings with “Back To You,” Showcasing the Label’s Signature Progressive Sound

by the partae September 17, 2022
written by the partae

Artists: Kosling
Title: Back To You
Label: Protocol Recordings

French producer Kosling is back on Nicky Romero‘s record label with his new single “Back To You,” a progressive gem with some nostalgic progressive big-room roots. The opening notes bring to mind classics from the 2010s, when electronic dance music had its modern rise to fame, with dynamic notes and emotive vocals. Kosling kicks the track into high gear with a euphoric and energetic drop that will induce goosebumps and lead the listener right to the dance floor. Since his previous release – “Lonely Days,” on Nicky Romero‘s imprint, Kosling has released two tracks on Proximity – “Stronger” and “Over You.” “Back To You” showcases Protocol‘s signature progressive and melodic vibe, making it a perfect addition to the label’s catalog and a nod to Protocol‘s long-time fans.

Founded by Nicky Romero, Protocol Recordings is one of the leading imprints for innovative electronic dance music. It boasts a roster of heavy-hitters, complemented with immensely talented up-and-comers such as Thomas Gold, Deniz Koyu, Teamworx, Futuristic Polar Bears, Trilane, Marcus Santoro, Stadiumx, Tim van Werd, and Nicky Romero himself, to name a few. All with a diverse range of sounds that are guaranteed to light up a dance floor. Kosling comes to Protocol with a resume that boasts several successful releases on Armada, Proximity, Revealed, and SIZE. His very first single – “Believe,” has garnered almost 1M streams in less than a month, earning the support of heavyweights, including Nicky Romero, David Guetta, Tiësto, and Afrojack, and “Wildest Dream” with Thomas Gold (also a Protocol release) is about to break 20M streams on Spotify alone. We can’t wait to see what Kosling has up his sleeve next.

PSTCRDS drop energetic new single “What We Dwell On”

by the partae September 16, 2022
written by the partae

Newcastle pop punk outfit PSTCRDS deliver a fresh anthemic sound on their latest single “What We Dwell On“.

The intoxicating new track explores the ideas and emotions surrounding a failing friendship.  As the tune twists and turns, it evokes a sense of dejection whilst simultaneously clinging to feelings that are no longer reciprocated, despite continued efforts.

“Eventually you can only try for so long to keep someone in your life who doesn’t want to be there,” says the band.

Produced, mixed and mastered by Chris Lalic (Windwaker, The Last Martyr), “What We Dwell On,” was welcomed into the world on Wednesday night via triple j Short.Fast.Loud. The tune is accompanied by a dynamic music video directed by Crow River Visuals (Paperweight, Terra).

Formed in early 2019, PSTCRDS is Stove Reid (vocals), Henry Holzberger (guitar), Tom Pockett (guitar/vocals), Brad Reid (bass/vocals) and Jack Stewart (drums). Together the band blend traditional pop punk sensibilities with a mix of emo and metalcore influences. The group dropped their debut EP, ‘This Place Or Our Pace,’ in May 2021 and was described by Wall of Sound as capturing, “The youthful essence of pop punk perfectly, whilst adding rebellious grit and staying current to today’s scene.”

The five-piece followed up with two-track release, ‘System Overload,’ in September 2021 to which triple j Unearthed’s Dave Ruby Howe expressed, “These big melodic punks have added a bit of gnarly skater bite to their sound here.”

To date, PSTCRDS have warmed up stages for artists to the likes of Windwaker, Rumours, Reside, Ocean Sleeper and more and set off on their first successful headline run mid-last year.

The band are currently flaunting their new tune live across the East Coast as part of their ‘Typical Emo Sh*t Tour’ in collaboration with Sydney metalcore group, Synge. The band have already listed Brisbane, Central Coast, and Canberra and still have sets in store for Adelaide, Melbourne, Singleton, Sydney, Wollongong and Newcastle. Tickets on sale now.

“What We Dwell On” is available now, streaming everywhere!
