(LivewireAU)

Stream ‘Better’

‘Better’ is a nostalgia-soaked piece of indie-pop/rock from the delightful Yugambeh/Gold Coast duo GENIIE BOY, due for release on August 26 alongside the accompanying music video.

Already blazing a trail of electro-pop excellence, Alisha Todd and Scott French formed the GENIIE BOY project and burst onto the scene with a handful of tasty tracks in 2021 as well as their dazzling debut EP ‘If You Have Something To Say’. Fresh off the stage from a host of shows around their hometown, GENIIE BOY is set to take the stage at Springtime Festival at Surfers Paradise on September 4.

Hot on the heels of the groovy ‘Shaky Ground’, this new single ‘Better’ marks their third release for the year – a cruisy tune packed with warmth and effortless feel-good guitar-driven rhythm.

Its magic is punctuated by clever drum fill motifs, polished production and Alisha’s distinctively silky voice that shines in the foreground, as well as in the catchy accents of backing vocals that are bound to have listeners smiling along. Listening once is good, but twice is definitely better.

The song was written about the lifelong pursuit of ‘betterness’, and the many ways we duck and weave the obstacles of modern life to find it. Alisha elaborates:

“The old saying – ‘if you love something, you’ve gotta let it go’ is almost the entire moral of this story, and that perhaps if we ‘let go of our hold’ on things, we can see the bigger picture more clearly.”

And for GENIIE BOY, the bigger picture is looking pretty damn good. Winning over tastemakers far and wide, their tunes have seen support from Triple J, Triple J Unearthed, MTV, AU Review, AAA Backstage, Frankie Magazine, BLANK GC, Scenestr, Aus Music Scene, Amnplify, Tone Deaf, The Music, LiveWire AU, Glide Mag, idobi Radio and Spotify playlists.

In pure GENIIE BOY fashion, they bring all their creative joy and larger-than-life humour in the accompanying music video as they explore a day in their life when performing on breakfast TV – giving the producers a heart attack. Always going the extra mile in their extravagant music videos, all hands were on deck to prep each of their giant paper mache heads before diving head first into this self-produced clip.

Feel good with GENIIE BOY’S vibrant new single ‘Better’ when it takes hold from August 26.

Alok Releases His Next Future-Tech Single – “Always Feel Like,” Dance Floor Filler Based on Rockwell’s “Somebody’s Watching Me,” Featuring Michael and Jermaine Jackson

by the partae August 26, 2022
written by the partae

Artists: Alok
Title: Always Feel Like
Label: CONTROVERSIA

Download / Stream

Alok is back on his imprint CONTROVERSIA with another cutting-edge club track that draws upon Rockwell‘s timeless party anthem with “Always Feel Like.” Although the iconic background vocals by Michael Jackson and his brother Jermaine instantly strike a nostalgic chord with listeners, this isn’t your parents’ version of “Somebody’s Watching Me” from 1984. Following the footsteps of his premier future-tech track “The Club Is Jumpin’” from May this year, Alok expertly crafts a sonic journey with future house-inspired basslines and dynamic synths, making “Always Feel Like” a bonafide club banger that feels right at home in the best clubs and festivals across the globe. All that without losing the old-school vibe of Rockwell‘s original. The track follows Alok‘s recent radio-friendly single “Deep Down,” which is going strong at over 30M streams on Spotify alone, constantly growing by a few million new spins weekly on the platform alone, and on the radio airwaves globally. This summer has been a hot one for the Brazilian star, with headline performances at Tomorrowland, Untold, Neversea, Balaton Sound, EXIT Festival, and multiple events in Ibiza as part of Alok‘s residency on the The White Island.

Alok

With a strong resume full of remixes and collaborations with artists such as The Rolling Stones to Zara Larsson, from Jason Derulo to Tove Lo, and more, Brazilian Alok has gained an immense international following and is currently having his global breakout moment. He already has the second-largest Instagram following of any electronic artist globally (almost 28M), and his 20M devoted monthly listeners on Spotify have made him the most listened to Brazilian artist in the world. In 2021, he was named the 4th Best DJ in the world, according to the prestigious DJ Mag Top 100 DJ Poll. In 2019, Alok was nominated for the International Dance Music Awards for his hit remix of the Meduza single “Piece of Your Heart,” and he also worked with global pop sensation Dua Lipa for the official remix of her hit single “Physical.” Recently he also collaborated with Grammy-award pop sensation John Legend on “In My Mind” and with renegade vocalist John Martin on “Wherever You Go” and lended his talents to remix Ed Sheeran‘s “Shivers.” The sky is the limit for the Brazilian superstar.

CONTROVERSIA

Alok‘s CONTROVERSIA continues to go from strength to strength, and this latest release is another fine example of a label making all the right moves to maintain its impressive forward momentum. Since its inception in June 2019, CONTROVERSIA has accumulated over 1B Spotify streams thanks to its remarkable family of artists, including Yves V, Alan Walker, Bhaskar, Alle Farben, Vintage Culture, and more. All of whom have helped CONTROVERSIA quickly establish itself as one of the most successful independent labels in dance music today.

Soma

written by the partae

Where are you currently based?

Sydney, Australia.

How did you first start playing music?

Growing up with an array of different instruments and records from around the world was like a musical playground for me. I began to explore my own sound and style from a young age, picking up the piano at the age of 5 and then moving onto saxophone, singing and dance at the age of 8.

What’s been happening recently?

The past year I have put my head down and honed into my writing. I have been playing piano and producing again, always finding new tools to stay inspired. I have surrounded myself with like minded creatives who share the same hunger to create and collaborate on many different levels and artistic avenues. I have now completed an EP set to be released 2023.

Your latest single ‘Alien’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

I think my mood was the biggest influence, coming out of a dark mental state, but also feeling a sense of empowerment and growth as a woman. When we started writing ‘Alien’, everything just poured out of me, all the emotions I had gone through the previous year coming out of lockdown and everything that surfaced when you are forced to be with yourself and face the things you can usually run away from with distractions in the city, always being on the move.  It was a rebirth of the new me, leaving behind old habits and moving toward a bright new path. I wanted the song to give a euphoric, psychedelic feel, giving the listener a sense of space, ambience and colour.

How did Alien come about?

I began writing this story a while back and once we started creating the music, everything just flowed. The lyrics came out so naturally, it was the perfect fit. We finished the song in one session, sometimes these things are just meant to be.

What does this single mean to you?

‘Alien’ weaves a story about the pressures of life in the city and how we survive it. It is about the darkness that pulls you in, the devil on your shoulder luring you into the abyss and how easy it is to forget who you are and why you’re here. It is a universal story, but also a personal story of altering my conciseness and numbing the pain and traumas that were longing to be healed.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with?

‘Alien’ was recorded, produced and mastered at Bodega Studios, written by me and produced by Tom Elliott from the duo Korky Buchek.

How did you approach the recording process?

We recorded ‘Alien’ in the space of one day. The idea quickly translated with the music and I was able to fully formulate and structure my verses. I was lucky enough to spend a lot of time at Bodega studios during the midst of covid. It was a safe environment for me to try out new ideas and let my creative juices flow with no judgement or distraction.

What or who influenced the concept for the music video?

I had a vision of playing with imagery of an otherworldly creature, my alter ego, luring me deeper into the unknown. I wanted to weave a narrative using the metaphor of dreams, intertwining this with creating fantasy to escape reality. ‘Alien’  embodies rebirth; I shed my skin to seek my emancipation. I am on a journey of empowerment. Samuel Barrie Wrote the final script and Freddie XX directed the video, both having strong influences in the conceptualisation of this piece of work.

Where and when did you film and how did you find the experience?

‘Alien’ was filmed at various Sydney locations. I found the experience to be a transformative learning experience. I was lucky to manifest the team that so naturally came together to execute this idea for ‘Alien’. Each member played such a significant role and went above and beyond their roles to assure this project would grow to be a masterpiece. With time constraints, unexpected weather changes, and the usual few happenings that seem to surprise you on set, the team and I were able to overcome these obstacles, always keeping a positive mindset and having clear and open communication, most importantly remembering to enjoy the process. Everyone’s energies aligned to create a safe space where thoughts and ideals could be exchanged, communicated and agreed upon, something which doesn’t always flow in creative spaces.  It is such an incredible experience working with creatives who are truly passionate about what they do and the art they want to share with the world.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

This is always a difficult question for me, as my inspiration stems from an array of musical genres, from old to new.

I think my biggest influences of recent who encompass my artistry and have impacted me and my music would be:

BEAM, Little Simz, Isaiah Rashad, Mick Jenkins, Saba, Andre 3000, Outkast, Kendrick Lamar, Asap Rocky, Smino, EarthGang, J.I.D, Blue Room Mafia, Pa Saleiu, Ramirez, Shakwell, Pouya, sza, I could go on but the list would be never ending.  In recent years I have been getting into a lot of alternative hip hop and future soul. One artist that I can’t stop listening to and continues to amaze me: BEAM, Jamaican born, Miami raised and mutli talented. His production and songwriting skills are beyond our time, and ability to churn out so many varying genres, whilst interchanging his vocal style and tonality has me guessing if it’s the same artist through his albums.

~ Pink Floyd

~Missy

What do you like to do away from music?

I love to travel, spend time with my family and my loved ones, and focus on other creative projects besides music. I think its important to constantly be informing myself of what’s happening in the world around me and learn about the ever-changing environment I find myself in. I find it almost detrimental to escape the city as often as I can, I venture out into nature where I can breathe fresh air, see the stars, swim in the ocean, and immerse myself in mother nature.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2022 going into 2023?

The remainder of this year will be spent finishing music, creating new works, meeting and collaborating with other creatives, and trying to help as much as I can with other people’s creative dreams and endeavours. I would like to perform my new material in new spaces and take my music all over the world.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

Nothing beats mum’s cooking. Having lived out of home for so long, I have been craving family energy and a home environment, the love and warmth it brings doesn’t compare to anything. I always feel realigned and inspired after spending time with the fam.

The Grogans release playful surf rock bop ‘No Thanks (I’m Going Surfing)’ + announce Which Way Is Out album + vinyl pre-orders

by the partae August 26, 2022
written by the partae

“The Grogans stress their rejection of any one genre label, making them an exceptionally accessible group to get into. Whatever your cup of tea or perhaps a bottle of bitters, you are bound to find something in The Grogans catalogue of songs to enjoy.” – Livewire Au

“The Grogans have emerged from the waves with seaweed on their head and they’re entertaining the whole beach with this surging surf rock.” – Declan Byrne, triple j Home and Hosed

Melbourne genre-bending trio The Grogans are back with their latest single ‘No Thanks (I’m Going Surfing)’, a lighthearted playful surf rock bop that was written in between lockdowns throughout 2021. Out Friday 26 August, ‘No Thanks (I’m Going Surfing)’ is an instant bop with its playful and amusing lyrics and the final single ahead of their upcoming album, Which Way Is Out, set to be released on Friday 28 October via Cousin Will Records, with vinyl pre-orders available now.

A song about politely putting your needs above what sometimes can be expected of you in a particular situation, in this case going for a surf, ‘No Thanks (I’m Going Surfing)’ follows the band’s recent success of ‘Just A Kid’, ‘Be Your Man’, and ‘Inside My Mind’, collectively added to Spotify’s New Music Friday AU & NZ, Fresh Finds AU & NZ, Rock Out, and Local Noise playlists, plus music video adds on Rage and MTV.

“We’re all very lucky for the relationships we have with the people around us and are so grateful for the time we spend with them, but sometimes you need to prioritise the importance of doing your own thing and being with your own thoughts. The ocean really gives us that escape, which is what inspired this song.” – The Grogans

“In this music video, we wanted to try something different with the subject matter. Our music videos have always been pretty performance orientated,  so we tried to add a little bit of acting into this one. Angus’ little brother Lach stepped up to a roll in it and we had our best crack at acting.” – The Grogans

Out Friday 28 October via Cousin Will Records, Which Way Is Out is a collection of both old and recent tracks, drawing from The Grogans love of the past to create a body of work that is nostalgic and forward looking. The album seamlessly blends the genre borderlines between heavy, cruisy, and acoustic tracks to create a fresh twist on the classic Grogans sound. Which Way Is Out will be available on vinyl, featuring a track only on the physical release, and can be pre-ordered today.

The Grogans are fresh off the road from from a national ‘Inside My Mind’ tour across Australia and first international shows in New Zealand, after recently completing a sold out tour with Hockey Dad and performing at Sailor Jerry’s Road to Rolling Stone, and surprise show at The Curtin in celebration of ‘No Thanks (I’m Going Surfing)’.

No Thanks (I’m Going Surfing)’ gives you another glimpse of the trio’s nuanced manoeuvres in surf, punk, blues, garage, psych, rockabilly and reggae from the upcoming album.

‘‘No Thanks (I’m Going Surfing) Lyrics
You asked me to stay the night
I said no thanks, I’m going surfing

I didn’t realise that you were on the way
The mistake was mine
I guess you could have said something
That could have changed my mind

But I won’t worry, I know the boys are on the beach and
And I’ll take my time
And you could worry, you know that this could be killing me but
Actually, I’m fine

He asked me to stay the night
I said no thanks, I’m going surfing
She asked me to stay for a while
I said no thanks, I’m going surfing

I didn’t realise that you were on the way
The mistake was mine
I guess you could have said something
That could have changed my mind

But I won’t worry, I know the boys are on the beach and
And I’ll take my time
And you could worry, you know that this could be killing me but

I said no thanks, I’m going surfing
She asked me to stay for a while

PARKWAY DRIVE SHARE BOLD NEW SINGLE ‘DARKER STILL’

by the partae August 24, 2022
written by the partae

+ ANNOUNCE ‘PROJECT: DARKER STILL’ A PARKWAY DRIVE DIGITAL X PHYSICAL GALLERY AND POP-UP STORE IN MELBOURNE ON SEP 10 IN PARTNERSHIP WITH SPOTIFY

Australian metal juggernauts PARKWAY DRIVE have shared their jaw-dropping new single, “Darker Still”, the title track from their forthcoming album, Darker Still, arriving on September 9 via Parkway Records. To celebrate the release, on Saturday September 10 Melbourne will host the first ever Parkway Drive pop-up store, featuring exclusive vinyl and merch, never-before-seen Parkway Drive art and memorabilia.

The latest single and album title track is Parkway Drive unlike you’ve ever heard them before. A monumental song in scope with career-defining performances all round, “Darker Still” creeps to life with a whistle and an acoustic guitar. From here – for close to seven minutes – the band takes us on a sweeping odyssey through awe-inspiring guitar solos, ethereal choirs and strings and a surprising vocal performance from Winston McCall.

“Love. Time. Death. The great defining elements that make up our existence. This song begins with the simplest of human sounds and represents these elements as the musical journey grows to reach its souring crescendo before facing the inevitable conclusion of its journey. The night grows dark… darker still,” states McCall.

On Saturday September 10, the first-ever Parkway Drive DigitalXPhysical Gallery and Pop-Up Store will be open for one day only in Melbourne’s OSHI Gallery located at 384 Smith Street, Collingwood. A completely immersive experience, the shop will feature new and exclusive limited apparel and vinyl, never-before-seen Parkway Drive art and memorabilia and there will be a signed Parkway Drive guitar up for grabs.

There will be a limited edition Marble Transparent Yellow/Black Vinyl exclusively available until sold out, as well as an Australian exclusive Galaxy Royal Blue/Baby Blue and Galaxy Swamp Green/Double Mint Vinyl variants. The store will be open from 9am – 6pm so you’ll need to be quick to get your hands on these. The first 50 through the door will receive a Parkway Drive signed print. Head over to the event page for more details

ABOUT PARKWAY DRIVE + DARKER STILL:

In the kitchen of the Byron Bay home of Winston McCall stands a refrigerator, adorned on one side by a quote from Tom Waits: “I want beautiful melodies telling me terrible things”.

This, the Parkway Drive vocalist says, is a pretty good summation of himself. It holds true, too, as one of the guiding principles behind Darker Still, the seventh full-length album to be born of this picturesque and serene corner of north-eastern NSW, Australia, and the defining musical statement to date from one of modern metal’s most revered bands.

Darker Still, McCall says, is the vision he and his bandmates have held in their mind’s eye since a misfit group of friends first convened in their parents’ basements and backyards in 2003. The journey to reach this moment has seen Parkway evolve from metal underdogs to festival-headlining behemoth, off the back of close to 20 gruelling years, six critically and commercially acclaimed studio albums (all of which achieving Gold status in their home nation), three documentaries, one live album, and many, many thousands of shows.

“When Parkway originally started out, we all were trying to push ourselves to do more than we possibly could,” is how McCall explains it. “What you hear on Darker Still is the final fulfillment of our ability to learn and grow catching up with the imagination that we have always had.”

To understand that growth is to understand Darker Still, both musically and thematically. Those who thought they had Parkway Drive figured out — the unrivaled energy, the high-octane breakdowns, McCall’s trademark bark — need reconsider everything they know about Australia’s masters of heavy. Darker Still stands as the culmination of a transformative time that has seen Parkway reach new heights of creativity and success by eschewing the restrictive, safe conventions of genre and abandoning their own self-imposed rules in favor of a wide-eyed appreciation of bold new horizons. “There are compositions and songs that we’d never attempted before – or, to be more accurate, which we have attempted in the past, but not had the courage, time or understanding to pull off,” McCall reveals.

And so while Darker Still remains irrefutably Parkway Drive, it finds the band sonically standing shoulder to shoulder with rock and metal’s greats — Metallica, Pantera, Machine Head, Guns N’ Roses – as much as it does their metalcore contemporaries. The album explores the concept of the “dark night of the soul” which is “the idea of reaching a point in your life where you are faced with a reckoning of your structure of beliefs, your sense of self and your place in the world, to a point where it’s irreconcilable with the way that you are as a person,” as McCall describes. Darker Still unfurls like the great rock concept albums, from Pink Floyd to, most comparably, Nine Inch Nails‘ The Downward Spiral, its 11 tracks taking in ruminations on society’s fear of death, isolation and a loss of humanity in its journey to redemptive enlightenment.

This is the Parkway Drive the band have been striving to be for two decades. Guitarist Jeff Ling says it best: “I’m really proud of what we have achieved together, and feel that as musicians, we have really ascended to new realms of class and ability.”

Emerging from the darkness of the past few years, this is the true face of Parkway —redefined and resolute, focused in mind and defiant in spirit.

SOMA delivers rich, heated new future-soul single ‘ALIEN’

by the partae August 24, 2022
written by the partae

Weaving strong and soulful vocals  that capture a seductive future-soul energy, Sydney artist SOMA presents her new single: ‘ALIEN’.

Emerging as a unique new voice in Australian music, SOMA is immediately engaging on record – her voice hypnotises as the smooth production of the track makes the listening experience one that is nothing less than immersive.

‘ALIEN’  embodies rebirth; SOMA sheds her skin to seek her emancipation. She’s on a journey of empowerment as she seduces and kidnaps a version of her alter ego that she no longer claims as herself.

This is a personal journey of healing. For SOMA, the project has been an outlet to connect on a deeper level to the inner self, a way for her to navigate her own way through hardships and reflect on these periods as regenerative. ‘ALIEN’, was created  with producer Tom Elliott (Korky Buchek) and recorded at Sydney’s Bodega Studios.

“‘ALIEN’ weaves a story about the pressures of life in the city and how we survive it. It is about the darkness that pulls you in, the devil on your shoulder luring you into the abyss and how easy it is to forget who you are and why you’re here. It is a personal story of altering my consciousness and numbing the pain and traumas that need to be healed.”

“This darkness is juxtaposed with fantasy and escapism. Using the metaphor of dreams, the song notes that we create fantasy to escape reality. ‘ALIEN’ transforms the metaphor into the positive notion that dreams are our realities in waiting, ‘in dreams we plant seeds for our future.’”
SOMA

For the ‘ALIEN’ music video, SOMA worked with director Freddie XX and a creative team to bring the narrative to life on screen. Filming at a number of Sydney locations, the project captures the core of the song’s story; feelings of being overwhelmed by the city you very much love – and eventually coming out the other side inspired and able to breathe once more.

“Freddie and I met in 2020, we instantly connected and began to talk about all things creative. We both had a deep appreciation for the arts and each other’s work. We began to chat about a collaboration, he listened to ‘ALIEN’ and we both had the idea of making a video for the song. In the months to come, we manifested a creative team who came together and helped bring our dream to life.”

‘ALIEN’ is out now.

PREMIERE: Sharl’s elegant pop shines light into the darkness with I Fell in Love

by the partae August 24, 2022
written by the partae

We are proud to premiere Sharl’s video for I Fell In Love, an elegant yet slightly eerie video which sheds light on the bad side of love.

Directed in Canberra by up-and-coming filmmaker George Tsotsos, the clip has already made hades turn within the film festival circuit, for example award winner at the Hollywood Gold Awards, current finalist in the Love International Film Festival, Cannes World Film Festival, quarter-finalist in the Los Angeles Film Awards – if that’s not enough to get you keen – we’re sure that it’ll continue to pick up more props for it’s slick visual and Sharl’s stylish cut.

About the video, Sharl says “The music video for I Fell In Love is a beautiful visual exploration of the song which truly reflects my core as an artist. With the introspective and reflective nature of this album it was fitting to use a visual theme of reflection for the film as well. Themes of turbulence, distress, a cycle of healing and ultimately the triumph of inner peace and self-love are explored in the video.”

This premiere comes on the eve of her new album City Lights; a coming-of-age journey through the ups and downs like record label headaches and shedding the bad juju of the dating world. The video for I Fell In Love will be officially released alongside the album CIty Lights on Friday, 26th August – Check it out here on The Partae first!

Following on from her pop-inflected single ‘Start Small’, Eora/Sydney producer, songwriter and DJ Ninajirachi today shares a new two-track release ‘Petroleum / Hidden Land’. LISTEN HERE.

The project provides another insight into Ninajirachi’s eclectic and diverse palette that takes a deconstructionist approach to club-infused songwriting. The A-side, ‘Petroleum’, harnesses Nina’s usual glitch pop sound, yet ups the ante with an amalgamation of irresistible melodies and a catchy chorus maintaining her ever-expanding sonic catalogue.

On the release, Nina shares “In 2019 Laces was pitching beat ideas to an artist and he showed me a few when we were hanging out. I loved one of them called “Petroleum” and he let me try out an idea over it. It was meant for someone else, but I ended up stealing it and making this song. This was almost three years ago now and the song has been through many changes. It has been a labour of love and it’s both weird and nice that everyone can finally hear it.”

Paired alongside ‘Petroleum’ is the B-side track ‘Hidden Land’, which features Eora/Sydney rapper Raj Mahal to deliver a rowdy sense of club-driven fun that soars with contemporary production. “I met Raj Mahal through our mutual friend Oh Boy but lockdown kept preventing us from writing music together. We finally linked in May this year and made Hidden Land in just a couple of hours” says Nina of their collaboration. “Raj really appreciates music production more than most non-producer artists I’ve worked with and he has really cool taste. We’ve made more music together since that’ll hopefully come out eventually.”

As a two-time triple j Unearthed High finalist, Ninajirachi emerged in 2016 and has since gone on to win many hearts of dance music fans, with an extensive back catalogue that includes two solo EPs Lapland and Blumiere, alongside her highly acclaimed seven-track EP with Kota Banks, True North and 2021 double-single ‘Dracodraco‘ / ‘Stoneteller‘ which was co-released on RL Grimes‘ Sable Valley imprint with NLV Records. A pure manifestation of glittering hyper pop that is chaotically fun, Ninajirachi has found support amongst key tastemakers locally and globally including triple j, triple j Unearthed, Crack Magazine, Mixmag UK, NME, EDM.com, PAPER Magazine, The Guardian, Billboard and Fashion Journal amongst others.

Ninajirachi’s take on pop experimentalism has seen her move the needle and steadily climb the ranks, having gained international attention from the likes of Dillon Francis, RL Grime and Anna Lunoe beyond her own releases, has put together remixes for Deadmau5 and The Neptunes, Flight Facilities, Hermitude, 1300 and more. Beyond her work inside the studio, she has also gone on to tour alongside Mallrat, What So Not, Charli XCX and Cashmere Cat, build her own sold-out VIVID Sydney event, Dark Crystal, and hit festival stages including Dark Mofo, Splendour In The Grass, Field Day and Listen Out and upcoming multi-hyphenate appearances at Springtime Festival and Spilt Milk. See all tour dates and details below.

Today, The Terrys are elated to announce the arrival of their debut album True Colour, out this October 7 via Domestic La La, alongside a string of national tour dates to mark its release. To celebrate the news, the band have shared their latest single, ‘Situation 99‘. LISTEN + WATCH HERE.

Speaking about their upcoming debut album, The Terrys share “It feels crazy just to be saying that today we announce our debut album. So much has gone into this album, blood, sweat, tears and froth. The singles we’ve released this year will be on the album, but the real magic is in the songs no one has heard yet. We’re so excited to get the record out and tour it with everyone. We want to thank each and every one of you who wake up in the morning and crank the tezzas, who come to our shows, who slide into our DMs, who buy our tee shirts and make all of this possible. Without you guys True Colour would have never have happened.”

With today’s news, The Terrys have shared a taste of True Colour in the form of ‘Situation 99‘, a melting pot of their recent releases, the emotive ‘Rolling Stone‘ and rousing ‘Waiting For You‘, both of which have been embraced by playlisting across triple j, Unearthed, RAGE and MTV, support from NME, Music Feeds and intimate live performance for Rolling Stone and DSP coverage across Local Noise, Rock Out, The Local List, Indie Arrivals, Fresh Finds AU + NZ and New Music Friday AU + NZ. ‘Situation 99‘ meets both in the middle, part psychedelic trip as conveyed through the music video, part considered plea to expand one’s horizons, the single pushes the creative edges of The Terrys‘ musical canon unlike before. Here they build on their intoxicating charisma to debut their fully realised musical world.

Speaking to the making of ‘Situation 99‘, the band reveal “Lu dog had been sitting on these hectic chords for a while and we knew there was a banger in there. Lu and the rest of the band made the most pumping instrumental when we were recording at The Grove and then let Finchy take it home with him to spend a couple of weeks coming up with the lyrics. We took some time to cook up the perfect SPACE ROCK banger.”

Recorded at The Grove alongside Jack Nigro (Skegss, DMA’S, Julia Jacklin, Middle Kids), True Colour is infectious, fun, free-spirited and most significantly, creatively ambitious. Known for their easy-going, take-it-as-it-comes approach to life, The Terrys‘ debut album is a deeply contemplative release encouraging listeners to embrace the highs and lows as they happen, to find their own true colours. This October, The Terrys will perform across the country to celebrate True Colour‘s release – pre-sale tickets are on sale now, pre-save True Colour HERE to get exclusive access. GA tickets are on sale from 9 AM AEST tomorrow, Friday 26 August. For all upcoming tour routing info + tickets see BELOW.

Earlier this week, The Terrys announced their inaugural Battle of the Bands competition, in partnership with Fellr. Introducing… CLEMENTINE

by the partae August 24, 2022
written by the partae

Barcelona-based, multi-national indie 4-piece CLEMENTINE are back with their second EP ‘Point Be’. The four tracker, which marks a shift in mood for the guys, is out now on Spanish imprint Siete Señoritas Gritando.

A headline act since 2019, CLEMENTINE’s debut ‘REC.’ was supported by BBC Introducing, Amazing Radio and beyond. They’ve been playing some notorious shows in their home town at some of the city’s most iconic cult fave music haunts, but their music is catching attention worldwide thanks to their trademark shimmering guitars, driving rhythm section and strong, soulful vocals.

We caught up with the band around the new release, check it below…

Hey Clementine, thanks for speaking with us! Where are we catching you today?

Hey Partae! Thanks for the interview! You’re speaking to Paul from CLEMENTINE, and right now it’s 30-something degrees in Barcelona, but the skies are looking grey and ominous. I think we’ve got a storm on the way, so it’s unlikely I’m gonna leave my apartment today.

You’re a multinational band all now living in Barcelona – how did you all meet/how was the band formed?

So Julian (guitarist) had been working on a home recording project when we first met through a mutual friend. He was wearing a jumper with the band Foals on it. We instantly bonded over a mutual love of the same kind of music and became friends. I played guitar when I was younger, but hadn’t played for about 10 years. Julian gave me his old guitar and told me to learn again so I could help him record. I was starting again almost completely from scratch, but I worked on my technique and then we started writing and recording together at his house on Carrer de Rec in the El Born neighbourhood of Barcelona. That’s where we got the title for our first EP.

Not long after, Vince (singer/bassist) moved to Barcelona for work. Vince and Julian have been friends since they met at college in France. They’ve played in bands together for years, including when they both went to live together in Colombia. So they’re pretty experienced playing together and know each other really well. After that, we found Raul online, invited him to come and play with us and we had a great chemistry straight away.

You’ve just dropped your new EP, ‘Point Be’, featuring four new tracks. This marks a shift in sound from your debut 2020 release ‘REC.’ How would you describe the REC sound in comparison to the Point Be sound for someone new discovering your music for the first time?

‘REC.’ was the first music we had ever recorded as a band outside of Julian’s apartment, so it was quite a new experience for us. At this point we had played a few live shows and we chose the songs that resonated with the crowd at the shows the best to represent us. I think ‘REC.’ is a more varied release in terms of sound, while with ‘Point Be’ there was more of an effort to keep a consistent sound and theme throughout. We wanted 4 songs that complemented each other perfectly, while still showing a range.

Personally I think that ‘Point Be’ has more anthemic choruses and an overall darker sound, but still has the same energy that you would find in a song like ‘Setback’ or ‘Horror’ from the first EP.

Do you think this shift in sound is a conscious choice or just a natural evolution as you continue playing gigs and writing music together?

In my opinion it was a conscious choice for this EP. Some of these songs are old enough to have appeared on ‘REC.’, so it’s not so much that our sound has changed overall. We still sound like CLEMENTINE, but we’ve chosen tracks for this EP which complement each other to keep a running theme throughout.

We’ve always had a dark and rhythmic sound, and we’ve always written big choruses. But I think that the 4 tracks on ‘Point Be’ definitely showcase some of our most anthemic and ambitious songs yet.

Rumour has it you spent 4 days solid recording the EP outside of Barcelona – what would you say was the best part of such intense studio time, and what was the worst?!

Yeah, the place was in the middle of nowhere, but it was such a great experience. We recorded with a producer named Marco Morgione, who recorded REC. EP. He knows the band well by now and we get on with him so well, which made the whole weekend feel like a holiday. His hospitality and the stunning location were definitely the highlights. We were surrounded by amazing mountainous countryside and the sun was out all weekend, so when we got a break we could spend it on the terrace, or having a barbecue.

The worst thing, for sure, was the cold which struck once the sun had gone in. If we record there again I’m gonna make sure to pack extra blankets.

What helped you guys stay sane in that time of recording? Was there much downtime/snacks/private jokes/team sports or activities that got you through?

We had a pretty strict schedule which we stuck to as well as we could. This allowed for downtime in the evenings where we could cook, eat and drink together. This helped us unwind while still feeling productive.

Marco knows our band and our sound really well, so he was on-hand to suggest things to us as we were recording. He has this amazing stash of old guitars, synths and other gear which he let us play with. I could’ve spent days just going through his pedal collection if I’m honest.

We also had plenty there to keep us busy while we weren’t recording. Marco had an old PS2 with Pro Evolution Soccer, which was a favourite pastime. We also made great use of his ping pong and subbuteo tables.

Do you have a favourite track on the EP? Or was there a track that came together easily from the beginning? And what about one that was a bit tougher or took a bit more time to nail?

The Streets Will Always Be Ours has an interesting backstory. We had been working on the instrumental for the song for a while under a different name – which is our usual process if we don’t have lyrics straight away. I always thought the rhythm of the guitars in the intro and verses was very similar to the Catalan independence chant Els Carrers Seran Sempre Nostres, which translates into English as “The Streets Will Always Be Ours”.

I wanted to do something a little bit different, so instead of writing a political song, I wrote a song about love, and feeling invincible in the face of adversity when you’re with someone who makes you feel secure and loved, but made it sound like it was a political song, with a huge chant at the end, and the megaphone at the beginning.

We recorded the instrumental to that in one session, and the lyrics came a week or so later. I was so excited to write it, but wanted to be careful to get the balance right.

On the other hand, we actually added Flight Tracker to the EP quite late. We originally planned to record another song, but Julian wrote the lyrics to Flight Tracker using an old instrumental that he had recorded years ago. It took a little while for us to get this one right, but it’s one of our most ambitious songs, and the synths really thickened out our sound.

What do you think has been the biggest highlight so far for you as a fresh band on the scene? Any career moments that really stick out?

The time spent recording this EP was a really unique and special experience, and one which I’ll always have really fond memories of, but my personal highlight was the gig we played at Bar Ceferino last summer.

We were still in the midst of heavy COVID restrictions, so we were only allowed a small number of people, but our curfew was over and bars had begun hosting concerts again. It had been so long since any of us had seen live music, that even though it was a sanitised version, playing a gig in front of anybody felt like the most exciting thing ever.

We played two sets that night, by the time the second set came, everybody had loosened right up and the energy in the room was incredible. That gig was officially the launch show for our REC. EP as we were unable to play live for months after its release due to COVID restrictions and curfew. I think we gave it the launch it deserved.

What’s next for CLEMENTINE?

Right now we’re just so happy to get this EP out that we’re gonna take the summer off. After that we’ll look at what our next steps could be. We’ve got tons of songs still to record and release, so watch this space!

KAEDA DAZE debuts irresistible lo-fi moody pop track ‘RUNNING FROM SOMETHING’

by the partae August 24, 2022
written by the partae

After a two year hiatus from music and enduring lockdowns, Kendra Fewster returns with a solo project under the new moniker Kaeda Daze. The track sees the young Melbourne singer via Western Australia step into her own, delivering a commanding vocal performance of self-empowerment similar to artists such as AURORA, Gordi and Gretta Ray. Emotive lyrically and sonically she wants this new project to show that through some form of fragility there is an extreme amount of strength.

“This first release is extremely important to me. The day I began to write the song is so completely vivid in my mind. It’s funny how certain moments can stick with you. In the moment you’re so channelled toward the living and creating aspect that you don’t realise it was going to be a seminal moment for your silly little life journey.” Kaeda Daze

Blending her love of lo-fi and cinematic pop overtones, ‘Running From Something’ is raw and introspective, her lyrics deeply personable but relatable. This is Kaeda Daze operating with a refreshed sense of confidence in her songwriting.

“The song itself sat incomplete for six to eight months. The first half was written in Melbourne and finally completed while I was home in WA. I sat there for hours collecting visual inspiration and a playlist of songs that spoke to me. My mind tends to work quite visually so when it came to the essence of the song I wanted to see it vividly in my mind. I ended up with a theme of blue haze, pearly white and silver armour. I wanted the track to sound like a slow motion battle in the fog; a chorus that became the clarity, the strength of the song.”

 Kaeda Daze

She wrote the song whilst killing the minutes, hours, and days during Melbourne’s gruelling lockdown last year. She was kept afloat during these dark days by having her sister in the next room. “We’d both been struggling with our mental health and she was my safe space during that time. Some days I’d sit there and feel so inept, feeling I was failing her and myself when I watched her struggle. Some days we were the only reason one another laughed or even spoke at all and I won’t forget how important her presence was for my sanity.”

Kaeda Daze

Powered by insatiable rhythms and hypnotic vocals, ‘Running From Something’ had a dream team bringing the track to life, it was produced by Sam Burtt (Sam Phay, Stellie) and mixed by ARIA, AWMA, and Music Victoria Award nominated engineer Becki Whitton (Tash Sultana, G Flip, Allday) with mastering by Wayne Sunderland Suture Mastering (Pnau, Disclosure, Motez).

“I have always been drawn to songs with a dark moody tether and worked to implement that with Sam (producer of the track) through atmospheric pads and textures. You will notice the idea of slow motion running is emulated as an echoing rhythmic pattern that almost sounds like waves crashing behind it.”  Kaeda Daze

Single artwork

Kaeda wants her new track to be a reminder to herself, her sister and the many others in lockdown that when things get tough, but regardless of the predicament you can push past that fog. “I like to imagine that we have metaphorical swords in hand, ready to take on whatever bullshit we have to face. I am an emotionally charged person and wanted to create something that did in fact reflect that.”

Kaeda Daze was a former member of WA folk/pop band ‘The Hunting Birds’ who earned two WAM Pop Song of the Year Awards. During her time with the band, she played at Falls Festival and Byron Bay Blues Festival, plus supporting global award winning artists, The Lumineers and Newton Faulkner.

A Simple Guide To Planning A BBQ Party

by the partae August 23, 2022
written by the partae

One of the many reasons that most people love summer is because it’s the perfect time to host a barbeque party! The fine and sunny weather creates a perfect atmosphere to take out your grill, cook the meat, and invite your friends and families for some hot barbeques. Furthermore, a BBQ party can also be an excellent theme if you’re celebrating birthdays, reunions, and other social gatherings.

But like any other party theme, hosting a BBQ party will also require intensive planning, especially if you’re planning a massive party for a big crowd. But worry not, as this article will give you a step-by-step guide when planning a BBQ party and ensure it starts and ends successfully.

Here’s a simple guide along with some BBQ party-planning tips to help you organize a stress-free BBQ party that will surely impress your guests:

  • Pick The Right Day For The BBQ Party

Before you start planning the food or location, your first move is to choose the right day for the BBQ party. As much as possible, pick a day when all or at least most of your guests are free and available (e.g., weekends, holidays). If you’re celebrating a birthday and the date falls on a weekday, you may schedule the party at night when most of your guests are already done with their work shift. You also need to do a quick weather check to ensure that the day you picked won’t be rainy, windy, or stormy.

  • Plan Your Guest List

Even if a BBQ party may seem like an informal gathering, unlike wedding receptions or cocktail parties, you still need to plan your guest list. That’s because the number of guests you invite will affect the amount of food, especially meat, you’ll need to cook and grill for the entire crowd. So, have a good estimate of how many people will be joining your BBQ party. Perhaps you’re planning to invite your family, relatives, and friends. Just remember not to invite too many people if you don’t have enough budget to buy and prepare food for all of them.

  • Plan And Prepare Your Menu

Just because it’s a BBQ party doesn’t mean you’ll only serve barbeques for your guests. The menu preparation for your BBQ Party won’t be easier than the other party themes. Before the party, take your time planning and preparing the menu.

Since you now have an idea of how many guests are coming, you’ll know how many kilograms of meat products you’ll need to order for the party. For bulk orders, you may check out the website of meat dealers such as the Grand Peaks Prime Meats or other meat suppliers in your area. You may browse their website for meat packages, especially if you plan to order multiple options for your guests (e.g., beef, chicken, pork).

Once you’ve got your ordered meat, ensure they’re ready to be grilled before your guests arrive. You don’t want to still be cleaning and slicing while your guests are already at your party waiting for you. As much as possible, by the time they arrive, the meats are already sliced and are currently grilled so your guests can chitchat or watch you as you finish the barbeques.

Aside from the barbeque and grilled meat, prepare all the side dishes before they arrive. You may ask a family or friend to help you chop the tomatoes and lettuce and form burger patties so that everything is almost or completely ready when your guests arrive.

  • Adjust Your Menu To Cater To Your Guests’ Preferences

When preparing your party’s menu, you must always take note of your guests’ personal food preferences. Remember that even if it’s a BBQ party, your vegetarian friends will still surely come over to join in on the fun. So, instead of making them feel left out, be ready to expand your menu and provide dishes suitable for vegetarians. If most of your guests are red-beef lovers, consider forgoing the chicken to make more room and budget for beef. Meanwhile, if most of your guests are bringing their kids, you must prepare some finger food suitable for kids.

  • Ensure You Have Enough Charcoal Or Propane

The last thing any party host would want is to leave in the middle of the party to run errands and additional supplies of charcoal or propane. Not only is it stressful and time-consuming, but it’s also a hassle and can completely ruin the mood of the party. Plus, once you return from buying charcoal, your raw meat will look rubbery from waiting too long to be cooked. To avoid such a situation, check if you have enough charcoal or propane to last the entire party duration.

  • Do Not Forget To Prepare And Stock Enough Drinks

As part of your party preparation, stock your cooler with drinks suitable for all your guests, both kids and adults. Preferably, you can set up two separate drinking stations intended for kids and adults. For example, the kid-friendly drink station must be filled with juice boxes, bottled waters, ice, fruit shakes, and other kid-appropriate drinks. Meanwhile, the adult drink station may be filled with wine, beer, soda, and other adult beverages.

If you’re planning to offer summer season drinks like cocktails and mocktails, it’s best to have them pre-mixed. This way, you won’t spend the rest of the party stirring and pouring the drinks. Some of the best summer cocktails you can prepare are:

  • Margarita
  • Mojito
  • Summer Sangria
  • Mint Julep
  • Paloma

During the party, make your guests feel welcome by offering them their first beverage. You can do this by the entrance or when they’re finally seated in their seats. Then, encourage them to help themselves with more drinks so you can resume your last-minute food preparations.

  • Decide On The Location

Suppose you’ve figured out everything you need to prepare for the BBQ party’s food and drinks. It’s now time to decide on a fixed location for your party. Generally, BBQ parties must be held outdoors since it’s not possible to grill meat indoors. So, pick an outdoor location that will be easier for you to host and organize a party. Most people choose their backyard as the party location since it’s free, accessible, and close to their indoor kitchen. You can quickly go to your kitchen if you need to grab any equipment.

On the other hand, if your backyard’s not spacious enough for a BBQ party, you may consider other outdoor spaces like the park or campground. Just ensure you have the permits or permissions from the space owners before planning the rest of the event.

  • Hang Decorative Outdoor Lights

Unless you’re having a BBQ party in broad daylight, you’ll need ample lighting to keep your BBQ party going for the rest of the night. Instead of the traditional light bulbs you currently have in your backyard, spruce it up with additional decorative outdoor lights like tiki torches, string lights, lanterns, butterfly lights, etc. These decorative lights can quickly improve the party’s atmosphere and add festivity to your BBQ Party.

  • Have A There For Your Outdoor Party

Although a BBQ party is already a theme per se, you may still consider having another theme for your party decorations or your guests’ outfits. Some of the perfect party themes fit for a BBQ party are:

  • Mexican Fiesta
  • Escape To The Islands/Hawaiian Theme
  • Country Rodeo/Cowboy Theme

Your chosen party theme will be your inspiration in picking decorations for the venue and buying props for your guests. For example, if you decide to have a Country Rodeo BBQ Party, you can buy bandanas, cowboy hats, and fake moustaches for your guests so they can wear them during the party.

  • Prepare Outdoor Games For All Ages

What’s an outdoor party when there’s no game to play? Take your outdoor BBQ party to the next level and prepare outdoor games fit for all your guests. If you have kids at the party, organize some outdoor games like:

  • Horseshoes
  • Cornhole
  • Potato Sack Race
  • Water Balloon Piñata

For adults, you can have games such as:

  • Bottle Ring Toss
  • Lawn Bowling
  • Beer Pong
  • Lawn Darts

Preparing outdoor games will keep the kids busy while adults can also play while drinking or socializing.

  • Encourage Guests To Bring Side Dishes

Although not necessary, this tip can come in handy, especially if you’re hosting a large BBQ party. So, when you send invitations to your guests, you can include asking them to bring side dishes if they want to. Don’t worry as this isn’t compulsory and this won’t also feel like a burden for them. In fact, most guests love to show off their homemade dishes or DIY recipes, and bringing one to your BBQ party can be a perfect opportunity for them. Plus, your guests’ side dishes will save you time and energy from preparing everything yourself.

  • Set Up The Snack Area Away From The Grill

During planning, the idea of guests surrounding you while you’re grilling may sound fun and exciting. But during the party, you might soon realize that having people surrounding you while grilling can be annoying. So, to prevent your guests from hovering around you while you cook, set up the snacks area away from the grill. This way, you have your own space to wrap up your last-minute cooking obligations while your guests continue to chitchat and have fun.

  • Practice Fire Safety Measures

Hosting a BBQ party means you’ll be dealing with fire since you’ll be grilling and cooking in front of your guests. Meats like burgers and sausages are filled with fats that could cause flare-ups. For everyone’s safety, ensure to practice proper fire safety measures and have a fire extinguisher or spray bottle prepared in case of small grease fires.

Let Your BBQ Party Begin!

Now that you know how to host and organize a BBQ Party, you can start planning for your own. Just remember that the most important tip is to have fun. So, while ensuring your guests are having fun, you must also have a good time yourself while grilling the food.

Partea caught up with a few members from the band since the inaugural sold-out July show.

Kaliopi & the Blues Messengers officially launched at the Glenmaggie Blues & Roots Festival earlier this year with a vibrant reception from festival goers starting their loyal fan base. Kaliopi & the Blues Messengers are Double Trouble Blues Sessions host band supporting national blues.

Lisette Payet, the band’s pianist explains, “I feel fortunate to have begun experiencing Memphis Minnie since joining Kaliopi & the Blues Messengers. It’s great to hear women singing the blues and get intriguing phrasing for which I’ve become a big fan. Playing piano as part of the host band for Double Trouble Blues Sessions with the Blues Messengers I appreciate how lucky am I to play with all these great musicians”

Les Oldman, drummer in the band expresses a profound respect for Memphis Minnie’s place in blues music history in awe of Mini’s story, “What a Story!”.  When asked how he felt about being a part of Kaliopi & the Blues Messengers and playing in the host band for the Double Trouble Blues Sessions? “I’m very grateful to be included in this special project among such fantastic players who want to entertain folk in these current troubled times… times of Blues.. so to speak”.

Kaliopi draws from the great blues tradition and the powerful women who made it their own and has honed in on the works of Memphis Minnie as a mentor. Now in preproduction collaborating with the country’s best specialists for their debut studio album showcasing the works of Mini, the elite ‘Blues Messengers’ plan to followup this production with a tour.

Resonate brings eclectic live music programming to venues in Brunswick, Coburg and beyond

Moreland City Council’s brand new music program Resonate, presented as part of the Victorian Government’s On The Road Again initiative, brings eclectic live music programming to venues in Brunswick, Coburg and beyond from August ’til December.

With a focus on unique, local and family friendly events, music will resonate from unsuspecting corners of Melbourne’s Northern corridor, welcoming the warmer weather with over 80 different events, curated by some of the region’s most innovative producers.

Orchestrated by the team behind Moreland’s much loved Brunswick Music Festival, the four-month long music program pledges to uplift Coburg and Brunswick music venues including The Retreat, Rubix Warehouse, Stay Gold, and Coburg RSL and Woodlands Hotel enabling them to book bigger names and cheaper gigs throughout the Spring and into Summer.

Resonate also elevates upcoming event producers, assisting them to create imaginative new live music events locally. From monthly Family Jams at Brunswick Ballroom to intimate gigs at Nicholson St’s Feminista Vinyl plus an epic Operatives label launch at Howler, the program bristles with possibility.

Keep your eyes peeled for upcoming announcements that will include an outdoor family event at Coburg Lake, a show at the epic new Glenroy Library and heaps more!

Quotes attributable to Minister for Creative Industries Steve Dimopoulos:

“We’re bringing a huge line-up of live music gigs to venues across Melbourne’s suburbs, delivering a boost to local venues while supporting musicians and performers with new opportunities.”

“On The Road Again will bring live music fans across the city’s north a real treat, while local businesses are set to benefit with live music revellers delivered to their doorstep.”

Quotes attributable to Moreland Mayor Mark Riley

“I can’t wait for Resonate to take the stage and bring the music to Moreland. The festival will see our municipality pumping with tunes in support of local musicians, venues and hospitality businesses,” Cr Riley said.

“Whether you’re a fan of Aussie rock, hip-hop or jazz, there will be gigs that appeal to everyone with events taking place from Brunswick to Glenroy.

“I thank the Victorian Government for funding Resonate, which has enabled us to support one of Melbourne’s most important live music precincts. Resonate will shine the spotlight on a range of diverse acts including artists including First Nations musicians, gender diverse artists and performers from a range of cultures and nationalities.”

Resonate is part of On the Road Again, a Victorian Government initiative to bring live music back across the state.
