Band shares debut US TV performance, announces SXSW & 2022 tour dates
Long established as one of South Australia’s premier songwriting and touring outfits, Wanderers have stepped into a new creative domain in recent years.
Bringing together influences from across decades of soul, rock and pop luminaries; channeling in with contemporary flair and songwriting skill, the group have fashioned for themselves a sonic identity that exists strongly between a vintage cool and a central sound that is refreshingly new.
The new Wanderers EP, their third and first since 2017’s Something For A Distraction, arrives as they prepare to return to the United States for SXSW, as well as announcing their headline EP tour upon their return for April and May. The release of the Wanderers EP follows on from the band’s debut US TV performance on Nashville’s News4.
The Wanderers EP comprises five tracks of soulful and rich guitar-driven music that is a testament to the creative dynamic between bandmates Dusty Lee Stephensen, Matt Birkin and their cast of long-term collaborators and live band. Stephensen writes with an old-soul edge; his lyricism a masterclass in personal storytelling (‘Malibu’, ‘Nothing In This World’).
“As 2020 hit, our recording dreams were coming true – we were about to head over to record an album in LA at Studio 606, Foo Fighters HQ. The home of the famous SoundCity desk, responsible for capturing many of our favourite records. All this while set amongst the backdrop of the California coastline, would have been a setting so fitting for our music.
We put those plans on ice, and focused on this EP, capturing some of our most loved tracks from touring and you can see the touches of that plan in the artwork and songs. We threw ourselves into recording at a collection of our favourite Adelaide studios – Wildflower, Wundenbergs, The Orchard; so we’re excited to have this one out, and gearing up to get on the road and share it with the world.”
WANDERERS
Songs like ‘Make It On My Own’ and ‘Penny’ exude the brightness and optimism Wanders brought to the project from the jump. Harmonically strong and rich in melodies that give us energy akin to Lime Cordiale and The Moving Stills, it’s music like this that has bolstered Wanderers’ presence in recent years as a band to watch out of SA.
The EP’s latest release, ‘Molly’ is another example of the easy wavelength the outfit are on when it comes to songwriting and arrangement.
Of writing the track Stephensen said, “‘Molly’ was conceptualised on a whirlwind trip to Lorne, a beach side town south of Melbourne, that hosts one of the biggest NYE music festivals in the country. I got myself into a jam where I had to complete a gig in Adelaide at 1am on New Years Eve and perform in Lorne at midday, less than 12 hours later. (see: ‘yes man’ in the dictionary)
Leaving myself no other option, I finished my new years performance, jumped straight in the car and drove the 9 hours non-stop to Lorne, drinking more frozen ice coffee and energy drinks than the average person might drink in a week along the way. I made it, performed the gig, crashed in a hot tent for half an hour, and woke up at the most bad-ass festival in the country, feeling like a little less than a shell of a human.
I remember thinking that this would be a terrible time to meet the girl of my dreams. If we struck up a conversation, started getting to know each other, I would have to abort at some point, I could feel my time was running out.’”
The release of the Wanderers EP lines up with the band’s triumphant return to live shows, having given fans in their hometown a taste of what’s to come with a sold out show at The Gov in Adelaide in December 2021.
In March, Wanderers will join a strong Australian contingent of artists including Eliza Hull, Children Collide, Alex The Astronaut and Tom West in Austin, Texas for this year’s SXSW festival. Upon their return to Australia, Wanderers’ attention will be turning to their headline tour, on sale now.

Pet Shop Boys today release their remix of DJ and Producer Claptone’s ‘Queen of Ice’, taken from his latest studio album “Closer”.
Continuing the run of outstanding album collaborations and the final single to be released, ‘Queen of Ice’ is another example of the mysterious International DJ and producer Claptone showcasing his exploration of house with a pop flavor.
The dream pop inspired collaboration with rising Canadian pop band Dizzy is taken from Claptone’s recently released album ‘Closer’ co-produced by Stuart Price (Dua Lipa, The Killers, Madonna).
As writers, producers and remixers, Pet Shop Boys (Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe) are the most successful duo in UK music history with 42 Top 30 singles in the UK including 22 Top 10 hits and four number ones. In 2020 they released their 14th studio album, ‘Hotspot’, which reached Number 3 in the UK album chart.

Sisters Jahan and Yasmine exploded onto the scene in 2012 with their debut self-released EP “Play Hard,” which has now been streamed almost 150M times on Spotify alone; additionally, their single “Alive” from the EP has been certified Platinum. ‘CHAMPIONSHIP RINGTONE LEAGUE’ is an ode to the Nokia theme – arguably the Holy Grail of ringtones. ‘HACKER’S CONVENTION JAM’ invokes intensity through vocal samples, with a fuzzy synth locking in your attention like a hacker to a computer screen. In an ode to dial-up internet, ‘56K DESERT CONNECTION’ harkens back to simpler times when an hour of your time would be spent downloading a couple of virus-laden MP3 files. A snake-charmer lead weaves in and out of punchy percussive stabs, leading us through the 56K Desert. And finally, ‘OS WAR III‘ pits the big operating systems against one another in a clash of pounding, industrial-tech, rounding out the release with a motherboard-like menagerie of internet-ripped samples.
Through the Internet Dreams website, the pair were able to bring the EP to life – or to its second life, at least. The website takes on the aesthetics of films like Hackers and Johnny Mnemonic, with the site adopting a straightforward command-line terminal to do things like downloading the tracks and accessing alternative content such as videos and an audio teaser.

Tone City Recording is one of WA’s premier boutique studios, with Sam Ford at the helm working with some of Australia’s most talented and sonically diverse names. As a new year gets underway, Tone City is ready to take its next steps (read: strides) forward in its evolution.
Having established as one of Western Australia’s proficient and in demand producers, Ford (POND, Birds of Tokyo, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets) has been working tirelessly in recent years to execute a special creative vision: to establish a recording company and music label that would represent the best talent being nurtured out West, and bring the goods to the rest of the county.
2022 sees the vision become a reality, with the launch of the official Tone City Records label and the debut of the Tone City Artist Development Program. The Netherlands, January 25, 2022 – Dutch electronic music festival The Crave Festival announces its lineup for its 2022 edition. The organization previously announced that the festival would return to Zuiderpark, The Hague for the fourth time on June 4th, 2022. With various (new) stages and more than 30 national and international acts, the organization offers a perfect mix of electronic music styles and artists. In addition to international headliners such as Nina Kraviz, Jeff Mills, Honey Dijon and KiNK, young talent and emerging artists such as Zohar and Mafalda will perform during the festival.
Unfortunately, the previous two editions could not take place due to COVID, but the organization confirms many artists that would have played last year again, making the lineup similar to the lineup of the previous editions. On top of that, the festival adds a number of new names and a new stage to the lineup, making The Crave Festival return stronger than ever. The large underground festival will take place on Saturday June 4th in the Zuiderpark, but the festivities will kick off on the 3rd of June with a show in the legendary venue Het Paard. On Saturday after the festival, an After Hours will take place in the PIP, a well known venue that is loved by music fanatics all over the country and serving as a stepping stone for many young and upcoming talent. A second After Hours will take place in Het Paard. On Sunday, the festival closes the weekend with an event on The Hague Beach – Scheveningen. With all these different events and the impressive line-up, The Crave Festival promises to be another great and diverse weekend this year.

The Crave Festival is a ground-breaking international electronic music festival that offers a stage for a wide spectrum of electronic music. The festival organizes various shows throughout the city, culminating in the outdoor festival in the Zuiderpark. Here, you will find a mix of various electronic music styles, spread over several stages, such as techno, disco, house and electro. For the 2022 edition, the organization has partially redesigned the festival site to make room for new areas and walking routes to discover the festival.

| Secret Project Festival is an oasis of art, music, murals, and live graffiti that welcomes only the most cutting-edge artists whether pioneering legends or red hot new talents. A whole spectrum of underground electronic sound is always represented and, last year, the festival debuted to great acclaim in Europe with a sold out crowd of nearly 20,000 attendees during ADE. After that raw, industrial-tinged event, the festival now switches it up and heads south to Portugal for a more organic and sun-kissed affair on sweeping sandy beaches with dramatic limestone rock formations and stunning views of the ocean.
Taking advantage of Portugal’s long hot days and balmy nights, music will play across all three stages, on all three days, all night long. The sub-tropical setting will add an extra dimension to Secret Project, on top of its already famous production quality and mesmeric audio-visuals. As well as the unmatched soundtrack, festival-goers can look forward to exploring a rich array of local cultures and cuisines, beach sports, water activities, restaurants, and bars during their stay in this spectacular setting. Musically, all bases are covered by a who’s who of international talent. For techno lovers, there will be an astonishing three-way back-to-back between Dubfire, Nicole Moudaber, and Paco Osuna. Adam Beyer presents his mighty Drumcode label with fellow techno titans Alan Fitzpatrick, Ida Engberg, ANNA, and Joel Mull, and pioneering minimal man Richie Hawtin also lines up. Elsewhere on the festival ground, new school talent Amelie Lens will shake things up, Ellum Audio boss Maceo Plex brings his astral sounds with label mate Raxon, while Swiss-Chilean maestro Luciano, Desolat label head Loco Dice and Ukrainian melodic innovators ARTBAT, Italian stylist Enrico Sanguiliano and globally acclaimed Eric Prydz cover all shades of techno. Drum & bass legends Chase & Status head up the new stage this year, and there is plenty of house to look forward to.
