PRAISE FOR KAY YOUNG

“Young will undoubtedly keep shining”

“Pure and bright promise.”

Today, London based artist, rapper and producer Kay Young has released her hypnotic new track ‘Suddenly‘ via Play It Again Sam. At its core ‘Suddenly’ is a love song, with Young’s vocals detailing the immediacy and shock of falling in love. The song follows the release of ‘White Teeth‘, an empathetic track that implored listeners to explore the world from a perspective other than their own.

On ‘Suddenly’, Young eschews the sinuous raps of ‘White Teeth’, delivering a smooth vocal performance indebted to a rich history of UK R&B. ‘Suddenly’ begins with a lone synthesizer and Young’s voice intertwining before taking a left-turn into a syncopated bass line that recalls the work of producers such as Jamie XX and SBTRKT. This sudden shift mirrors the sudden hit of falling in love during a new relationship.

Speaking on the genesis of ‘Suddenly’ Young says, “I wasn’t planning on making this a love song but sometimes the best things aren’t planned. I guess you can compare it to when love comes knocking on your door without a warning and completely catches you off guard – Suddenly.”

It is another track that marks out Young as being one to watch: an artist capable of balancing elegance, immediacy and sheer talent. After a year of working on new music, 2021 is the year that Kay Young unveils her master plan and steps out into the light.

ANDY GOLLEDGE SHARES TWO NEW SINGLES/VIDEOS ‘NEW STAMP’ & ‘BABY MUMMA’

It is with great excitement that I OH YOU share two new singles/videos from the Sydney-via-Tamworth enigma that is Andy Golledge, in the form of ‘New Stamp’ and ‘Baby Mumma’.

Premiered on Double J and Radio Kix respectively, these energetic new singles represent the two sides of the Andy Golledge coin; one a raucous rock song packed with the energy of a young Bruce Springsteen (New Stamp), the other a blue-collar gospel sing-along packed with all the foot tappin’ goodness of Golledge’s infamous live show (Baby Mumma).

Golledge says it was in fact his live show that helped shape these two songs into what you hear today:

“‘New Stamp’ originally had a softer, bluesy vibe but evolved through performance as a means to get drunk people at the Sando to pay attention.”
“Similarly, ‘Baby Mumma’ came to life when the band formed about 6 yrs ago, it was a very different song to the one you hear today, it’s evolved from a folk song into a country gospel song over the years, very much due to performing it to audiences over time and it slowly become a sing-along.”
WATCH: ‘Baby Mumma’ by Andy Golledge
If Golledge is only just now beeping onto your radar, we almost envy you the voyage of discovery. His name has practically become folklore in Sydney’s Inner West, both for the exhilarating unpredictability of his live shows and the curveballs of his repertoire, genre-hopping between ’60s country and ’80s Greatest Hits rock.

‘New Stamp’ and ‘Baby Mumma’ are Golledge’s first releases since his 2020 single ‘Ghost of Love’ which saw love across Triple M and ABC Country Radio and saw him tour NSW with shows in Sydney, Newcastle, Byron, Tamworth and Wollongong. ‘Ghost of Love’ was the highly anticipated follow up to Andy’s debut EP Namoi, which was released in early 2020 to glowing support from the likes of American Songwriter, Consequence of Sound, Vinyl Me Please, Chorus & Verse, Elicit Magazine, Enigma and Vents Magazine and adds to a myriad of rock and country music tastemaker playlists across Apple and Spotify.

With ‘New Stamp’ and ‘Baby Mumma’ Andy Golledge comes crashing back into our ears with two songs you simply won’t be able to turn off, as he amps up for a larger release that he refers to as “the road trip of my life so far”.

SPENCER. Releasess new single & video ‘MyLuv’ Debut album Are U Down? out September 10

Today, Spencer. has released a second single from his forthcoming debut album, Are U Down? – out September 10 via 4AD / Remote Control Records. ‘MyLuv’ was born from a night of smoking and playing Super Smash Bros. and is a simple ode to his girlfriend. Spencer. says, “I made this song in the morning which is super rare for me. I realised I didn’t have any trumpet on the album and had been picking that up again. This is like a celebration of my love so the trumpet felt perfect for that. Those are the same drums used on my Want U Back EP which was really fun to revisit. ‘MyLuv’ is slowly becoming one of my favourites because of how fun it is to play and how immediate it is.”

The official video for ‘MyLuv’ was created by Matthew Klahn and filmed in just two hours along New York’s Williamsburg Bridge. “I think this is my favourite video I’ve made,” Spencer. writes. “The cool thing about filming in New York is people get really excited about the camera. I thought people were gonna hate us.”

‘MyLuv’ follows the release of ‘Lonely As I Ever Was’, both singles that will feature on Are U Down?, the debut full-length album from New York musician and producer Spencer Miles Abraham Allen, the brains behind Spencer. Written, recorded and produced by Spencer. during the pandemic, its 11 songs blend R&B, hip-hop, funk, indie, pop, jazz and soul to create a sound that feels both analogue and digital, and heralds the past whilst staying firmly in the present. Featuring 4AD labelmate Becky and the Birds (vocals on ‘After The Show’), Luke Diamond (guitars) and Jake Aron (some additional production), Spencer. has integrated neo-soul vocal fireworks, hip-hop flow and pop ambition into an album steeped in all the feels of a New York summer.

Born and raised in Rochester, NY, to chemist parents who presciently gifted him the middle name Miles (for Miles Davis), a career in music beckoned from an early age with 4-year-old Spencer. lobbying his Jamaican mother and British father for trumpet lessons in tribute to his namesake. Rochester’s rich and underappreciated creative scene nurtured his musical skills, and he won a place on a summer jazz programme at the city’s prestigious Eastman School of Music in his teens. A self-taught producer who has always recorded in isolation, he started self-releasing home recordings in 2018, and eventually dropped out of college when his EP Want U Back became a word-of-mouth hit.

Now transplanted to the Brooklyn neighbourhood of Bed Stuy, itself a fertile ground for creative enterprise, Spencer. is a main player in a tightknit and supportive creative community that also boasts Clairo, Snail Mail, Claud, Advisry, Binki, Cautious Clay and Triathlon amongst its burgeoning talent.

Are U Down? is released digitally on 10 September 2021. Physical formats will follow in 2022.

Introducing Egyptian-Australian producer Moktar!

by the partae August 5, 2021
written by the partae

Proudly introducing the latest addition to the Astral People roster, Moktar! Today marks the release of the Egyptian-Australian producer’s debut release, “SILK”.

A hybrid style, Moktar effortlessly combines techno with traditional Arabic instrumentation, sampling and producing to celebrate the sounds of his background.

Moktar’s heritage has always been at the forefront of his identity. Navigating racism and abuse was an everyday reality growing up in Sydney’s Shire region, especially in the years surrounding the Cronulla riots. Regardless, Moktar’s Middle-Eastern roots have become a source of pride and inspiration expressed in his music.

Signed to Mall Grab’s label Steel City Dance Discs, Moktar will release his debut self-titled EP, an expansive and expressive exploration of techno and IDM through the lens of Arabic percussion and instrumentation.

His first single, “SILK”, is a microcosm for this sound, embracing complex and traditional rhythmic ideas while traversing emotive melodic states. With a debut Australian tour around the corner, Moktar’s music is beginning its journey and is taking everyone with it.

“My inspiration behind “SILK” has a lot to do with my struggles growing up in Australia navigating racism. I was ashamed of being Egyptian and embarrassed by my culture. I was made to believe that being Middle Eastern only came with negative connotations throughout most of my life.

“SILK” represents how I feel today – the luxury of being comfortable and the ability to move around freely, both physically and spiritually. A constant reminder that racism is only one of many obstacles to overcome in life. I wanted to be able to share my story through this single…today I am proud to be Egyptian.”

We can’t wait for you to hear Moktar’s debut single “SILK”, and stay tuned there’s plenty more in the works…

Tom Morello Announces ‘The Atlas Underground Fire’ Out October 15. Listen To ‘Highway To Hell’ Ft. Bruce Springsteen & Eddie Vedder

ALBUM LAUNCHES WITH A CLASSIC COVER, REMAINDER OF TRACK LIST TO FEATURE IMPRESSIVE SLATE OF COLLABORATIONS ON ORIGINAL MATERIAL

HIGHWAY TO HELL FT. BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN AND EDDIE VEDDER
 AVAILABLE NOW

Following his critically acclaimed and groundbreaking 2018 album The Atlas Underground, Rock & Roll icon and two-time Grammy winner Tom Morello announced his latest project today, a follow-up album entitled The Atlas Underground Fire. Featuring a jaw dropping cast of collaborators including Bruce Springsteen, Eddie Vedder, Chris Stapleton, Mike Posner, Damian Marley and more, Morello’s insane guitar playing will be on full display taking the instrument into the future and forging an alternative/rock/EDM masterpiece with all-time legends and cutting edge firebrands.

Morello – co-founder of Rage Against The Machine, Audioslave and Prophets of Rage – will release this forthcoming album The Atlas Underground Fire on October 15 by Mom + Pop Music. The record is available for pre-order now HERE.  The album’s first single, available HERE, is the classic rock AC/DC rock anthem Highway to Hell featuring Morello, Bruce Springsteen and Eddie Vedder.

“Our version of Highway To Hell pays homage to AC/DC but with Bruce Springsteen and Eddie Vedder, brings this legendary song into the future. One of the greatest rock’n’roll songs of all time sung by two of the greatest rock’n’roll singers of all time. And then I drop a shredding guitar solo. Thank you and good night.” said Morello.

Tom Morello is widely known as a barrier breaking guitarist who continues to push the limits and prove the transformative power of music. Throughout his remarkable career, Morello has collaborated with everyone from Wu Tang Clan to Johnny Cash. On The Atlas Underground Fire, as he did in 2018’s The Atlas Underground, Morello took a path into new sonic territory with the project’s breadth of talented collaborators, transforming his sound. With his guitar leading the way, Morello continues to create powerful alloys of different genres.

The album, as testified by Morello, is a clear byproduct of very dark and challenging pandemic days.  Recording guitars on his phone, the album was made both creatively and technically from his home studio in Los Angeles, while sharing files with collaborators around the globe. “During lockdown I had no access to an engineer so I had to record all of the guitar parts on the voice memo of my phone,” said Morello. “This seemed like an outrageous idea but it lead to a freedom in creativity in that I could not overthink any of the guitar parts and just had to trust my instincts.”

And while Morello is known as one of the world’s greatest social justice crusaders who has written songs that quickly became manifestos, he said the pandemic allowed him a freedom on this album to follow more of the emotions and anxiety of the times. “This record was a life raft in a difficult time that allowed me to find new ways of creating new global artistic connections that helped transform a time of fear and anxiety into one of musical expression and rocking jams,” said Morello. To be sure, Morello isn’t done with social justice manifestos, and many of those threads can be found within this album, but unusual times created an altogether unique album.

The Atlas Underground Fire Track Listing:
01. Harlem Hellfighter
02. Highway to Hell (featuring Bruce Springsteen and Eddie Vedder)

BLUE STINGRAYS TO RELEASE VINYL ONLY RE-ISSUE OF CLASSIC ALBUM ‘SURF-N-BURN’

by the partae August 5, 2021
written by the partae

“The holy grail of modern surf guitar albums” – Ride The Wave Magazine

“A high water mark of the late 90s surf guitar genre” – Surf Or Bust Digest

Surf-N-Burn – the bodacious debut record by the Blue Stingrays – has rocked, rattled and rolled since its original 1997 release on Epitone Records. Now twenty-four years later and long out of print, Epitone will re-release this classic surf rock album on vinyl on September 24.

Upon its original release, the members of Blue Stingrays were touted as iconic yet anonymous surf rock pioneers. Now, after decades of whispers and speculation, the identities of these mysterious musicians have been officially confirmed as guitarist Mike Campbell (Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers/Fleetwood Mac/The Dirty Knobs), bassist Ron Blair (Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers) and drummer Randall Marsh (Mudcrutch).

Like those who roamed the globe and found the perfect wave, Blue Stingrays nailed the perfect sound when their first twang rang ‘round the world on their now legendary debut. To quote the original Surf-N-Burn vinyl jacket sleeve: “The most profound expression of the human condition ever communicated through art, the passion in man’s soul expressed through surf guitar and captured on record!”

Over the past two plus decades, wave breakers and beach combers alike have demanded that the genius swell of sound that is Surf-N-Burn become available again. California’s Epitone Records are happy to oblige. A vinyl-only re-issue of Surf-N-Burn will be released on September 24 on standard black vinyl, a trans blue color in indie retail stores and blue dream splash on the band’s webstore.

Pre-order the album HERE.

Also out today is “Grits and Eggs”, a previously unreleased song from the Surf-N-Burn sessions. A rippling tide of blown out breeze, listen to it HERE.

BEACH PANIC SHARE NEW VIDEO FOR “TWIST WITH ME” ‘ICE CREAM TAMBOURINE’ EP WILL BE AVAILABLE FRIDAY AUGUST 13

by the partae August 4, 2021
written by the partae

Melbourne bop rockers BEACH PANIC! are today sharing their new single, “Twist With Me”, from upcoming EP, ‘ICE CREAM TAMBOURINE’ out Friday August 13.

BEACH PANIC! breathe new life into an era that laid foundation for early rock and rollers like Elvis Presley and The Beatles. “Twist With Me” leaves listeners with a desire to hit the town, meet up with your baby and dance the night away.

“Twist With Me was probably the easiest and quickest song we have ever written,” says the band.
“We were hanging out listening to ‘Surfin USA’ by The Beach Boys and wanted to make our own little nod to the song.

“At the time we were actively trying to make songs as simply structured as possible so we could really focus on creating a high energy surf-punk soundscape, once we wrote the hook for the chorus and made the bass follow the vocal melody we knew we were onto something absolutely bodacious.”

“Kindred” was the first to drop from forthcoming EP ‘ICE CREAM TAMBOURINE’ and explored the fear and vulnerability of falling in love, and sonically showcased exactly what BEACH PANIC! are all about. Premiering at TheMusic, who described the single as “a surfy, west coast synth tune dripping with nostalgia”, the old school Hollywood inspired music video was added to ABC’s RAGE playlist over the weekend and was praised by Hysteria Mag with a glowing: “Summer vibes have come early this year with Kindred”.

Adding a new dimension to the traditional band lineup, BEACH PANIC! is a surf-pop art project comprised of two musicians, Daniel Marinakis and Tom Mitchell, who share musical duties with alternative rockers Belle Haven, and creative mastermind and visual artist Yannica Stakelbeck-Keily. The group go by their own monikers, Tequila Sunrise (Yannica Stakelbeck-Keily), her long time partner Dr. M. Flamingo (Daniel Marinakis) and his best friend Daddy Longlegs (Tom Mitchell) whose lives converged in a creative household where the project was born.
The trio share a love for the charm and quirks of music from the 50s and 60s. The free loving, heart-on-your-sleeve themes mixed with hip shaking grooves is exactly what the members strive to bring together, and these elements have since become integral to the project. With the boys emotive punk rock upbringing and Yannica’s love for vintage style, the amalgamation of their hard hitting energy and groovy fashion sense makes BEACH PANIC! loud and confident. Together the band has created a special blend of tongue-in-cheek surf-pop rock music that bounces between being unabashedly honest and utterly rambunctious.

“Twist With Me” and “Kindred” are available now to stream and purchase everywhere. ‘ICE CREAM TAMBOURINE’ will be available Friday August 13.

GOLDING ANNOUNCE NEW SINGLE & VIDEO ‘BOXING UNDERWATER’ FEAT. CAILIN RUSSO

by the partae August 4, 2021
written by the partae

Indie electronic stunners Golding have today announced their neoteric new single Boxing Underwater, a meandering, expressive track that ponders – will the magnetic force that drew two people together still exist when those people are sober?  Co-written with beloved pop songwriter Jarryd James and featuring the breathtakingly understated vocals of Cailin Russo, Boxing Underwater is out today.

Boxing Underwater is evocative of indie-electro-pop influences such as RÜFÜS DU SOL, Running Touch, and Chet Faker, yet Golding continues to carve a unique path for themselves through their intricate, hooky vocal melodies, modern, sharp production, and clever lyrical turns that keep the listener guessing.  Boxing Underwater is particularly special, co-written alongside global superstar and master melodist Jarryd James, as lead singer Jay from Golding explains, “Jarryd has always been a huge inspiration and someone I’ve looked up to as an artist.  He’s always encouraged me to explore my musical freedoms and demonstrated the idea of ‘you can do anything’, there’s no rules in songwriting.  To finally be creating in a room with him was a special moment for me.”

Working alongside LA artist Cailin Russo was another snappy opportunity for Golding – and she is a perfect choice for this track, as her voice floats delicately amongst the hypnotic electronic bed of instruments.  Reflecting on their time working together, Jay remarks, “We didn’t realise that the song could grow even more until Cailin came on to feature.  I’ve been a fan of Cailin’s music for years and have always had her in the back of my mind as someone I’d like to work with.  Her vocals really helped set the tone and the mood of the song, all the pieces fell into place.”

The mood of the track is wistful, even a little melancholy, but undeniably beautiful.  There’s room for the listener’s interpretation, yet another alluring charm – the audience will interpret each word and each textural movement differently, as Jay explains, “I love how creatively vague the lyrics are.  I really want people to find their own meaning within the track and hope the lyrics can speak to people in their own way.  Boxing Underwater is a melodic expression that evokes emotion through the sonics of the track, allowing listeners to create their own sub-narrative and imagery in their minds.”

Filmed and directed by Nicholas Stevens (Havana Brown, Manu Crooks, Onefour) at Fastback Studios, the video for Boxing Underwater is engaging and beautifully shot, taking on a life of its own, as Matt explains, “It was really important to us to show varying sides of relationships, not just the good but the bad too. We wanted to capture the emotion of a real relationship so we were lucky enough to have real-life couple Mikalah and Zohar star in the clip, you can truly feel the love and chemistry between them as you watch the video unfold.”

After the success of their recent collaboration with Boo Seeka on Don’t Waste Your Love and previous single Alone. Together now on its way to notching up 2 million streams on Spotify alone (and spawning that ultracool Touch Sensitive remix), it’s a thrill to see this electrifying duo back again so soon, and with such a strong offering.  This really is just a taste of what is to come from Golding.

Boxing Underwater feat. Cailin Russo is out today.
Golding is Jay Bainbridge and Matt Bartlem.

PUNK VETERAN & SINGER SONGWRITER JOEY CAPE RELEASES MUSIC VIDEO FOR “IT COULD BE REAL” NEW SOLO ALBUM A GOOD YEAR TO FORGET OUT AUGUST 13 VIA FAT WRECK CHORDS

“A punk veteran’s introspective ballad, Cape sounds downright crushed on ‘It Could Be Real’, a hushed song in which he wonders, at 54, if he’s ever going to be cut out
for a lasting relationship.” – Rolling Stone

“’It Could Be Real’ explores the life of a single person, who has become complacent after failed relationships, yet still finds hope in connectedness through Cape’s mostly disenchanted lyrics.” – American Songwriter

“’It Could Be Real’ matches the themes of this album with some of Joey’s most melancholic music yet. It’s a somber, folky and very lovely song.” – Brooklyn Vegan

Fat Wreck Chords and singer-songwriter Joey Cape, frontman of iconic punk band Lagwagon, are excited to release the music video for “It Could Be Real,” the first single lifted from the Friday, August 13 release of his brand new solo LP, A Good Year To Forget . A song written from the perspective of a disenchanted single person—a person who has experienced the highs and lows of multiple failed relationships–“It Could Be Real” was directed by Sean McCue and Nina McCue and features comedian Joe Sib. Cape had the following to share about the video:

“Making the video for ‘It Could Be Real’ was so much fun–directors Sean and Nina McCue are so talented and really do it all. I was in good hands with them. The plot was based on the woes of the busker. Sean McCue has busked all over the world, something I have never done before. I respect those who do. It takes true dedication and I imagine the benefit is meagre. Still you see those people out there everyday everywhere in the world.

I think one day was enough for me. Haha. A few old friends including comedian Joe Sib showed up. He is hilarious and made us all laugh the entire day.”

Watch the music video for “It Could Be Real”

An album that was written during a year that saw Cape lose his father, separate from his wife of 20 years, contract COVID, and move back in with his parents as a result of a livelihood lost, Cape’s forthcoming solo album, A Good Year To Forget, is a warm and beautiful record that encapsulates all the trials and tribulations over those challenging 12 months.

Fat Wreck Chords will release A Good Year To Forget on August 13, 2021.

Naarm/Melbourne’s Skydeck (AKA Dominic Kearton and Mitchum Clemens) today share new track ‘Guilty Of’. It’s the final single from the duo’s sophomore album, Coupon, out Friday August 27 via Dinosaur City Records, Osborne Again and Kingfisher Bluez digitally and on limited-edition 12” vinyl.

Listen HERE. Pre-order 12” vinyl HERE.

‘Guilty Of’ features Dom Kearton on vocals, channelling “drunk sad karaoke” energy as he pleads guilty over muffled synths, drum machines and a bouncing bass line.

Kearton says of the new single:

“The lyrics for this one are about the different types of phoney you are at different stages of your life. When I was younger I did a lot of weird and unnatural shit, trying to convince other people I was cool, taking things characters said in books I was reading and trying to pass them off as my own thoughts. It’s funny thinking back to that period of time and realising these days the only person I really lie to is myself.”

“Musically this song is a product of the environment it was recorded in. I never would have been able to record it in my share house, but luckily I was house sitting on Phillip Island and I could really lean in on the vocals. I sort of tried to channel a really sad drunk karaoke energy on the vocal takes and I’m pretty happy with the results. Treating a synth part as percussion is a move I pulled a few times on this album and I think it helps make the song less rigid and sloppier.”

‘Guilty Of’ follows Coupon singles ‘No Change’ and ‘Dogshot’, which saw praise and plays from the likes of ToneDeaf, triple j, Deafen County, BTR Today and Mindies, with rotation adds across FBi Radio, 2SER and RTRFM.

Skydeck is the project of Naarm/Melbourne duo Dominic Kearton and Mitchum Clemens. Live, the two are joined by Liam Parsons (Good Morning), Dainis Lacey and Ambrin Hasnain (Cool Sounds).

Taking inspiration from cold, post-punk sounds of the 1980s, Skydeck makes use of FM synthesis and the bright, clean and sometimes artificial sounds it provides,  contrasted with distorted guitars and upbeat bass lines.

Sophomore album Coupon is the follow-up to Skydeck’s Australian Music Prize-nominated debut Eureka Moment (2019). While Eureka Moment was pieced together bit by bit, with lyrics applied to old unfinished demos years later, Coupon sees the band writing and recording in unison.  Though writing and recording at the same time, founding members and long-time friends Mitchum Clemens and Dominic Kearton were physically separated throughout the entire process: one in Mexico and the other back home in Australia.

Coupon was as much an artistic endeavour as it was a way to stay connected with each other over long distances, with songs and ideas acting like letters back and forth. Evidence of this can be heard through field recordings and phone memos scattered throughout songs.

Eureka Moment gestured towards an anti-capitalist sentiment, while Coupon sees the band less focused on observing society’s issues from afar, rather reflecting on their involvement within them.

Coupon is set for release digitally and on limited-edition 12” vinyl on Friday August 27 via Dinosaur City Records, Osborne Again and Kingfisher Bluez.

KEDR LIVANSKIY Announces album Liminal Soul out October 1 Shares lead single & video ‘Stars Light Up’

Russian producer/musician Kedr Livanskiy returns with her expansive, timeless new record on which she pushes the boundaries of electronic songwriting. Liminal Soul plays like an opera as Livanskiy brings her crystalline voice to the forefront, channeling it into operatic choruses, looping falsetto, and one of her first full songs in English. This conviction is evident in the album’s instrumental arrangements as well – Livanskiy expertly fuses acoustic elements with electronic ones, deconstructing pop songwriting with Bjork-like prowess. The haunting vocal loop and house beat on lead single ‘Stars Light Up‘ sound almost underwater, distorting our sense of physical space and prompting us to “plunge into the night skies.”   Listen / Watch Stars Light Up’ HERE.

‘Stars Light Up‘, which sees its release across all digital platforms today via 2MR / Remote Control Records, comes with an introspective video captured on 8mm film in one of the oldest church complexes in Moscow by director Sergey Kostromin. Kedr describes, “White-hipped roof vaults – antique arches, but with a Slavic tint. This place is very personal to me. I feel the connection of antiquity, with those times when people turned their gaze to the sky in search of answers to their questions, in order to feel some kind of otherworldly energy and strength. ‘Look at the sky’ is sung in the song, urging people of our time not to lose contact with heaven – not necessarily in a religious sense, but rather a broader metaphysical one.”

Livanskiy’s previous record Your Need cemented her on the forefront of Russia’s burgeoning electronic / experimental music scene and was met with acclaim from both fellow DJs and press alike, earning her features in publications like The Guardian, Pitchfork (Read her Rising Feature), V, Bandcamp, Gorilla Vs Bear and more, as well as live gigs worldwide from Moscow to New York City.

The infectious pop energy of Your Need is still present on Liminal Soul, but this time it’s more refined; a single element in an elaborate arsenal. Rather than rebelling against the upbeat nature of Your Need, she opted to expound upon it: Liminal Soul takes the technicolor dance floor conjured on Your Need and drops it into the middle of a lush forest, striking a perfect balance between the electronic energy of contemporary life and the organic ease of the natural world.

“Urban being and intuitive organic life are inseparable within a man. That’s the boundary I intended to discover, an archaic pulse inside modern people.”

To do so required her first to push her own internal boundaries, including the use of her voice. In the past, Livanskiy’s vocals were used sparingly, a gentler element in a larger production tapestry. On Liminal Soul, though, she’s brought them to the forefront. With this liberation came the freedom to experiment with the voice as an instrument as well: in addition to ethereal choruses, Livanskiy also employs falsetto and looping operatic harmonies to bolster these songs. On ‘Boy‘, she sings in English, mournfully reflecting on the end of a relationship and growing older. Her presence on these tracks is more palpable as a result – Livanskiy is taking ownership in a way she hadn’t in the past.

On Liminal Soul she injects her infectious club beats with a dose of the natural, crafting a transcendent collection of deconstructed break pop. Contributions from Flaty and avant-electronic group Synecdoche Montauk on ‘Your Turn‘ and ‘Night‘ add texture to the album’s dancier tracks, while the use of older acoustic instruments on ‘Storm Dancer‘ and ‘Boy‘ add a sense of timelessness that furthers the otherworldly tone. From the angelic choral opener ‘Celestial Ether‘ to the moodier outro ‘Storm Dancer‘, the listener enters a state of suspended reality where they are transported to dark cityscapes and verdant rural sprawls, futuristic societies and ancient ones, all in the same stroke. In the end, Livanskiy doesn’t propose a single path forward. The point, instead, is to make peace with the fluctuation itself.

The album’s striking cover art, designed by Kedr and Flaty, reflects this theme as well: “It was essential to share the feeling of transition, of a space, which cannot be articulated,” she says. “The idea is that even in dark ages the light still glows somewhere inside.”

PREMIERE – Multi-Faceted Hip Hop Artist Undertow Pushes Through On New Single ‘On Sight’

by the partae August 3, 2021
written by the partae

Serving up one of the slickest videos of the year, multi-faceted hip hop artist Undertow releases  fresh visuals for his single ‘On Sight’ filmed by Kenna Filmz released via Likeminded Recordings.

The single was written over a period of time pre/post CO-VID, and is about his life and how the  rapper lived, whether it was good or bad, he just keep moving forward. It references things that  were happening at the time of the writing.

He goes on to say, “Friends were going through various struggles, from breakups to heart-attacks,  this song is about how I perceived that at the time and how that affected me. From an artistic  point of view, the track is about doing what you want, maintaining your vision and integrity. Don’t  abide by the rules with art as it’s an expression of yourself,”

“The message is no matter how buried you are in life, mental thoughts, day to day hardship, and  how down you feel, you just need to push on and get what you came here for,”

The accompanying visual overflows with energy and see’s Undertow roam through the streets of  Sydney with conviction. Capturing the glow of the city and it’s surroundings.

Having made a bold and confident statement within his career, Undertow is no stranger to the stage. He has over 20 years tenure entertaining Australian and New Zealand audiences never swaying too far from the spotlight. Since releasing his debut LP ‘Minds Believing’ in 2010 to some great reviews and recognition. He then went on to release two albums and an EP with the act Kobra Kai. As a founding member the D&B/Grime/Hip Hop/Electronica act Kobra Kai made a huge impact on the Australian scene. Following that release, ’Light in the Distance’ dropped 2018  and a collaboration with Sydney producer O.T and Dj Maniak for 2019’s ‘Staircases’ release.

Undertow has gone on to perfect his craft of connecting metaphors and syllables over crafted  instrumentals. Along the way he shared the stage with some of the best in the business, including  Caspa, Dizzee Rascal, Scratch Perverts, Dr Octagon, Lyrics Born, The Four Owls, Ocean Wisdom,  Jam Baxter, MIA, Footsie and more.

Undertow’s upcoming EP ‘On Sight’ sees him go back to his bass music roots, with production  handled by UK producers and all around a 140 BPM, his ability to switch in and out of modern hip  hop, grime and anything in between is what really makes this release stand-out.

“A serious contender in a cut-throat industry”

LA-based pop polymath SEB has just released his debut EP, IT’S OKAY, WE’RE DREAMING, via Mom+Pop, a six-song excursion that includes his previously released singles ‘Coney Island‘, ‘THEY DON’T LIKE ME‘, and the bonus track ‘seaside_demo‘. LISTEN HERE.

Since emerging in 2020 with his first single ‘Boys Don’t Cry‘, SEB has steadily built a fervent fanbase and captured the attention of tastemakers worldwide, a process accelerated by the release of ‘seaside_demo‘, which has amassed a staggering 50+ million streams in just two months.

Carving out his own stylistic lane, SEB is as inspired by the emotionally charged songwriting of artists akin to Kurt Cobain and Joni Mitchell as by the boundary-breaking approach of artists like Tyler, the Creator, Kid Cudi, and Grimes. IT’S OKAY, WE’RE DREAMING explores his darkest truths as he questions how the past shapes who he is today – complete with an enthralling visual world inspired by cult movies Gummo and Donnie Darko.

“IT’S OKAY, WE’RE DREAMING serves as the first act to this whole journey,” SEB explains. “It fleshes out the mind-state I was in senior year where all these possibilities were about to open up, but at the same time, I’m starting to deal with the realities of growing up.” The EP’s stylistic diversity is, in part, influenced by SEB’s wildly varied upbringing, coming up in Chicago after hopping between New York, Haiti, Oklahoma, and Miami.

Upon returning to New York for college, he interned at the iconic Electric Lady Studios, where brief brushes with artistic giants spurred him to make the move to LA to focus on his music career. SEB explains, “the fact that I’m black makes it hard for people to just call my music pop. The whole point of my artistic existence right now is fighting for the idea that a single black artist, who writes and produces their own music, can stand right next to a Taylor Swift or Harry Styles.” IT’S OKAY, WE’RE DREAMING marks the first step in that journey.

IT’S OKAY, WE’RE DREAMING EP is out now, buy/stream it here.
