PRAISE FOR HAVIAH MIGHTY

2019 Polaris Prize Winner

“After having a breakout 2020,
Haviah’s unapologetic hooks are bound to travel even further in 2021”

GQ

“Horror-movie energy and a deliciously evil beat”
Rolling Stone

“Equally adept at breezy confidence, rapid-fire spitting, sneering menace, and laconic cool”
NPR Music

“Ominous, bass-heavy beats and hard-nosed bars that could go toe-to-toe with any challenger.
Pitchfork

“She’s about to be coming at rappers necks all 2021”
HotNewHipHop

Introducing award-winning Canadian rapper Haviah Mighty, who today shares her powerful new single, ‘Protest‘, featuring UK grime rapper, Yizzy. With the release comes the news of her highly anticipated new mixtape, Stock Exchange, set for release this summer. Listen + watch ‘Protest’ HERE.

Produced by Young Dreadz, ‘Protest‘ is a visceral recall of the feelings of guilt and stress that many marginalised individuals carry with them daily due to centuries of suffering, heaviness, pain and bloodshed at the hands of law enforcement. The production blends slow, sad, ethereal piano chords with aggressive 808s and a drill-infused percussive groove, following a pace that rises like a heartbeat with tension. Visually, Haviah and Yizzy go beyond borders, taking to their own streets to speak truth into a video directed by Kit Weyman and Chrris Lowe in collaboration with Director X-led Fela productions (Drake, Rihanna, Kendrick Lamar, Rosalia, Jay Z).

Says Haviah, “This song is my protest – a reminder that regardless of all the conversations, the chatter, the media, the justices and injustices – this feeling and fear we walk with, is as present as ever. After all these years, encountering the police as a marginalized person still triggers pure fear. These feelings within the production – the intensity and depth of the chords, the stress and tension of the pacing – it all mirrors the feelings of paranoia, fear, control, and our innate will to survive when encountering law enforcement. Having UK-based artist, Yizzy, bless this record brings it full circle. From a light skin male’s perspective from somewhere else on the globe, our experiences still mirror one another, a further testament to the eerie similarities of trauma among Black folks.”

Haviah‘s forthcoming Stock Exchange mixtape will also feature collaborations with Grandtheft, Mala Rodriguez, TOBi, and more. The title refers to a reckoning Haviah had internally over the last year in regards to how artists are forced to validate their value based on random data (followers, subscribers) and losing a part of the authentic human-to-human universal experience of art. She adds,“These statistics that we use to compare ourselves to others and to define our successes, have become proof of our worth. It’s all perception. These ideas around perceived value got me thinking about the Stock Exchange. Seeing parallels between the way it flows – the constant rising and falling – all dictated by the general public’s perception of an entity’s value, and ultimately how that influences the moves that we make as individuals.”

Action and advocacy aren’t new words in Haviah Mighty’s vocabulary – they go beyond lexicon. Haviah became the first hip hop artist, as well as the first Black woman, to win the Polaris Music Prize for her breakthrough 2019 album, 13th Floor. The project and the hard-hitting singles that followed highlight her vast sonic influences ranging from classic Rap/Hip-Hop elements to Caribbean rhythms, frenetic electro and diverse instrumentation, while tackling marginalisation, racism, the Atlantic slave trade, loneliness, self-worth, and more. Garnering praise from Rolling Stone, the BBC, GQ, Pitchfork, NPR Music, Consequence, The Source, Complex, and others, stay tuned for more music and news from Haviah Mighty soon.

Document Journal

Tkaronto / Toronto artist and producer Charlotte Day Wilson today drops new single and video ‘Keep Moving‘, the next installment from her highly-anticipated debut album, Alpha, set for release on July 9th via Stone Woman Music. Listen to ‘Keep Moving’ HERE.

Charlotte recently shared the first single from her new LP, ‘If I Could‘, which features a verse from poet, musician and fellow Canadian artist Mustafa, and premiered on Annie Mac’s BBC Radio 1 show. The track was launched with a clip co-directed by Charlotte and award-winning director Kevan Funk, showcasing the changing faces and identities of Texan bull riders.

‘Keep Moving‘ is a continuation of the ‘If I Could‘ video and the queer cinematic series for this album, a compelling exploration of self discovery and earnest declarations, recollecting Charlotte’s inner struggles of love, growing, and breaking that she’s finally speaking to in a greater way. Another immensely moving and deeply personal clip, the visual further tells the story of Alpha and boldly commences Charlotte’s new era. Alpha also features the widely praised single ‘Take Care of You‘ ft. Syd and the recently-released track ‘If I Could‘  was featured as the face of Spotify‘s inaugural EQUAL campaign playlist and appeared on an impressive billboard in downtown Tkaronto / Toronto.

Charlotte has made waves in the industry from her 2016 release of her debut EP CDW (which has garnered more than 92+ million streams in total on Spotify), and through her work with friends and collaborators BADBADNOTGOOD, Daniel Caesar and Kaytranada. Charlotte returned in 2018 with the poignant EP Stone Woman. She has garnered 1.6+ million Monthly Spotify Listeners and over 100+ million streams on Spotify, truly making a name for herself.

Charlotte’s contemporary take on R&B and soul showcases her sublime vocals and her ingenuity as she fuses vintage basslines, gospel assonance, and contemporary minimalist production to create a strikingly beautiful sonic aura. Stay tuned for the authentic Alpha era.

LITTLE SIMZ UNVEILS NEW TRACK ‘ROLLING STONE’

by the partae June 15, 2021
written by the partae

PRAISE FOR LITTLE SIMZ

“A show of power in word and sound”
The New York Times

“She’s a force the status quo will have to reckon with”
NPR

“An epic return”
Guardian Film and Music

“One of the best MCs to ever come out of the UK”
Afropunk

“Wherever UK rap goes in the future, it’s safe to say that Little Simz will be helping propel it forwards”
Complex

“One of the most unrelenting, rapid-fire rappers and profound lyricists out of the UK”
Consequence of Sound

With her powerful new track ‘Rollin Stone‘, Little Simz delivers a potent, no holds barred sucker-punch straight to the heart, spitting her trademark quickfire raps like no other and reminding people why, exactly, she is one of the most vital artists in the game. Listen HERE.

Bristling with well-deserved swagger and propelled by barely controlled fury, ‘Rollin Stone‘ throws in references to Shibuya and Gucci, awards, and Sao Paulo to highlight not only how Simz has ascended to the top of the food chain, but also the sheer grit and graft it’s taken to get there. As she coos on the second half of the track: “Mummy handled business / Papa was a rollin stone / I’m a mix a both there ain’t no bitch boy in my bones”.

‘Rollin Stone‘ follows on from the twofer that Simz delivered in the spring, with the epic opening missive of ‘Introvert‘ followed by the gorgeous swoon of ‘Woman‘ (and not forgetting the accompanying videos, the latter of which was directed by Simz herself). ‘Rollin Stone‘ is just another example of why Simz is one of the most urgent and important voices we have today, and another reason to get very, very excited indeed about her forthcoming album, Sometimes I Might Be Introvert, released September 3 on Age 101.

Juno Mamba Shares New EP 'Freedom' + Announces Headline Shows For Aug

Juno Mamba Shares New EP ‘Freedom’ + Announces Headline Shows For Aug

by the partae June 12, 2021
written by the partae
PRAISE FOR FREEDOM BY JUNO MAMBA

“Hypnotic and stunning” – Double J

“Amongst the most brilliant names of Australia’s dance music space” – Pilerats

“Cinematic ambient experience” – Purple Sneakers

“Soaring” – NME Aus

In a time where we are all in need of some good news, Soothsayer are thrilled to today release Juno Mamba’s exceptional sophomore EP Freedom, with a spotlight on his explosive new track ‘Frequency’. The release also comes with headline shows in Melbourne and Ballarat this August.

‘Frequency’ is trademark Juno Mamba. It’s driving urgency and purpose, with a pulsating acid undertone relishes in the emotional dance palette that has become synonymous with Juno Mamba. A track that will surely become an instant live highlight in his full band live show next month, ‘Frequency’ reminds us not only where Juno Mamba has come from, but what universe he is building, one that’s all his own.

LISTEN: ‘Frequency’ by Juno Mamba
Opening track and first single ‘Siargao Dreams’ is named after the Philippine Islands surfing capital, which Vinci made his first-ever trip to in 2019. Born in nearby Cagayan de Oro and then raised in Ballarat from the age of five, the pilgrimage back to his family’s homeland was a chance to explore the history of his father, of which he knew little about. He reveals, “The emotional connection I felt as soon as I got there was incredible. For the first time, I felt like I belonged and I was free from judgement. I wanted this song to feel exploratory and in a dream-like state.”

On ‘1996 (feat. ANTONMOND)’, Vinci reflects on his childhood. He recalls “I can remember that year vividly as a sports fan, because of the Atlanta Olympic Games. I have a lot of happy and naive memories but looking back, there were also a lot of difficult moments trying to fit in culturally.” It also marks Juno Mamba’s first-ever artist collab, with Naarm/Melbourne vocalist ANTONMOND. A match made in a warehouse somewhere in heaven, the track is straight 90s rave at its finest. Like an Antipodean nod to artists such as Underworld, Orbital and Chemical Brothers, the fist pumping vocal chant serves as an elegiac ode to the power that memory can hold.

As a curtain call on the immersive listen is the final track ‘Slow Malady’, which leans on emotion and experience. A more downbeat number on the EP and serving as a beautiful palate cleanser after the rave that was ‘1996’. Not only an incredibly emotive listen, the track acts as an aural journey to a very personal story of Juno Mamba finding out during his first trip to Siargao that his Papa’s health was in a serious condition. He describes this as “a surreal experience visiting a place where he was born and raised, which I was only starting to discover, then being told this jarring news. I wanted to convey the sense of freedom and positive energy he displayed when I saw him.”

Musically, the four songs on Freedom demonstrate Juno Mamba’s advancing capabilities as a producer and musician, crafting textured electronic sounds for the head and heart, as much as the feet. Mixing two of its four songs himself, he revels equally in slow-build moments as he does headrush highs, and in the freedom the EP title implies. Juno Mamba surmises, “The journey has been far from perfect, but I’m in a place of peace.”

‘Siargao Dreams’, ‘1996 (feat. ANTONMOND)’ and ‘Slow Malady’ have garnered support from BBC Radio 1 (‘Siargao Dreams’ was featured as their ‘Chillest Record’ back in March), Double J, Triple R, Soundcloud, Amazon, Spotify, Apple, Pilerats, NME AU and Purple Sneakers. They have also received love from RÜFÜS DÜ SOL, Tchami, Qrion, Bob Moses, Lane 8, Eelke Klein and Moullinex amongst others.

A step up in production and sound, Freedom straddles the lines of deep yet emotive dance music. It serves as the perfect vessel for Juno Mamba to bring back the applauded live show to crowds in Victoria this August (with more shows to be announced), and Soothsayer could not be more excited.

“The way a drum machine and a couple of synths can conjure up certain thoughts and images is pretty f***ing magical. Listening to these songs, Vin creates new worlds and invites me away with each of them… Whether it’s a sweaty warehouse rave (1996), a heady nighttime trip through the city (Frequency) or sunrise swims in the ocean the following morning (Slow Malady), this EP has the potential to transport you to another place. I like that and I reckon you will too (hopefully).”

STRICT FACE ADDS PERCUSSIVE POWER TO FOURA & BIG SKEEZ’S “ON TONIGHT”

STRICT FACE ADDS PERCUSSIVE POWER TO FOURA & BIG SKEEZ’S “ON TONIGHT”

by the partae June 12, 2021

In true Strict Face fashion, the Adelaide-based producer has added his distinct percussive flair on his “Re-Strict” of FOURA and Big Skeez’s “On Tonight”.

Out officially last month via NLV Records, “On Tonight” was the first track released via the label for Naarm/Melbourne-based producer FOURA and Western Sydney Afroswing artist Big Skeez, who are both also new signings to the label.

In its first month, “On Tonight” has received radio support from the likes of triple j, FBi Radio, PBS, SYN and more. It also copped a few playlist additions on Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon, as well as coverage across Purple Sneakers and Life Without Andy, among others.

Strict Face’s “On Tonight [Re-Strict]” comes a month after the single’s official release. On his rework, he takes it from the UKG realm into a drum-fuelled, flute-tinged wonderland, very true to his signature production style.

“Nina [Las Vegas] played me the demo of “On Tonight” late last year and I was immediately hooked, so naturally I said ‘yes’ straight away when I got asked to remix it a few months later,” Strict Face said. “It’s one of my favourite tracks of 2021, so I hope my twist on the song did it justice.”

He nods to the original with the inclusion of some subtle, dreamy chords, keeping the emotive energy of the original in step with the club-ready atmosphere he’s crafted.

“Aaaaah this remix!!! Strict Face absolutely killed it,” said FOURA. “His percussion creates the perfect club atmosphere that I knew he would bring but the subtle chords keep the emotional feel and presence of the original. It’s a dream and I can’t wait to play it in DJ sets.”

Strict Face is no stranger to the NLV Records roster. After appearing on the label’s very first Sampler back in 2015, he’s since released two EP’s and a mixtape, as well as countless singles with the label. His sound flawlessly ties together the soundsystem-centric world of dance music and pop production, while expertly drawing in elements of genres like grime and dancehall. His deft ear has seen him land production credits for Le1f, Cadence Weapon and Cakes Da Killa, with remixes for Dawn Richard and Dro Carey. Along the way, he’s supported the likes of Pearson Sound, Zed Bias, Machinedrum, Cashmere Cat and Murlo, and has played at Laneway Festival, FOMO and Paradise Festival.

Strict Face is currently working on new music. More to come in 2021.

MANSIONAIR RELEASE NEW SINGLE ‘DON’T WAIT’, WITH VIDEO + NEW SHOWS ON SALE FOR UPCOMING EAST COAST TOUR

written by the partae

New single ‘Don’t Wait’ arrives with a charming video that will have you reaching for your dancing shoes

Catch Mansionair at shows in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney in June/ July – new shows on sale now

First headline shows since 2019

Sydney trio Mansionair today share the second cut from their forthcoming album due later in the year. The new song, ‘Don’t Wait’ arrives just in time for the band’s imminent run of dates along the east coast – their first run of headline shows since August 2019.

The perfect combination of Mansionair’s trademark dreamy soundscapes, an irresistible beat and a silky groove, ‘Don’t Wait’ was co-produced by the band and accomplished UK producer, Jon Gilmore (The 1975). It follows on from the release of the epic ‘MORE’ in February and arrives with a poetic music video from Sydney creative Courtney Brookes that is sure to appeal to the dancer in us all.

WATCH: ‘Don’t Wait’ by Mansionair
On the meaning behind the song, singer Jack Froggatt shares:

“This song is about confronting the demise of a relationship, letting go of past versions of yourself – mistakes and all – and finding freedom in that fact. It’s a song asking for honesty from your partner and from yourself, to rip the band-aid off and not stretch out an inevitable ending. It’s the joy in moving on and embracing the great unknown.”

Coming off tours with some of the biggest acts in the world (Florence and the Machine, CHVRCHES), Mansionair released their debut album Shadowboxer in March 2019. A triple j feature album, Shadowboxer was written and self-produced by the band, the culmination of a journey that started with a viral hit single and led to high profile collaborations, including a Grammy-nomination for their single with Odesza in ‘Line of Sight’, gold ARIA-accredited tracks in ‘Easier’ and ‘Astronaut (Something About Your Love)’, Billboard charting singles and over 250 million streams across DSPs.

Following the release of ‘Don’t Wait’, Mansionair will return to local stages this June and July, with a run of shows across Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney. First shows in Melbourne and Sydney have already sold-out, with second dates on-sale now.

When we sense impending waves of change, it usually presents itself as a weariness towards the unknown, hope for the start of something new, and the possibility of personal and societal evolution – leaving us anxious and altogether unprepared. For Monolink, the tides are indeed turning, and he stands tall, welcoming change like an old friend. His musical journey has always been reflective, and his second LP Under Darkening Skies, released today on Sweat It Out, is another stepping stone towards the full manifestation of his artistic self.

Monolink (Steffen Linck) produces honest and thought provoking music that oozes with emotion, while his lyrics tell relatable stories of the heart. With a background in folk guitar, he remains rooted in the understanding of music as an ancient form of storytelling, lyrics and notes marrying to take the listener on a sonic journey through worlds and across genres. Therefore, Monolink’s characteristic blend of indie-folk songwriting and pulsing melodic techno encourages listeners to trust his musical curiosity. He invites them to join him as they explore kaleidoscopic shades of electronic music past and present.

Monolink adds — “Under Darkening Skies is an album that’s connecting different dots in my life, representing phases or moments I went through. I wanted to go back to writing actual songs again instead of adding vocals to a beat, which gave me the freedom to express more musical facets of myself. Eventually it became the most diverse record I have made so far, influenced by a time of global social and economic uncertainty at an ever increasing tempo of change. Like a dark cloud approaching.”

Prior to the unanticipated global shut down of 2020, Monolink had been touring for three years without a moment’s pause. With a year of live performances put on hold including a run at Coachella 2020, Monolink was finally still, given time to reflect and find authenticity above all the noise. Under Darkening Skies is the culmination of that stillness coupled with Monolink’s tale of realignment. Alongside these themes of self-preservation and personal awakening, he weaves in nature-laden metaphors that juxtapose the inconsequentiality of human life when faced with the weight and power of the natural world.

Steffen’s voice cries out to this effect in ‘Reflections’ while taking on the realities of a mind’s journey in isolation aimed to resonate deeply with impending crowds around the world:

“Everything I see is a reflection of my ego
Everything I hear is an illusion in my head
In a forest of realities I’m alone in my treehouse
That is who I am, and who am I to judge”

First and foremost a live performer, Monolink is renowned for his ability to convey raw songwriting emotion and turn crowds of thousands into intimate gatherings. Such artistry has allowed him to perform on iconic stages at Burning Man, Tomorrowland, Melt, Montreux Jazz and more. His debut LP Amniotic, released in 2018, achieved over 100 million combined streams with remixes from Artbat, Patrice Bäumel, Tale of Us, Nicole Moudaber and more dominating the charts around the world. His genre-blending techniques and this unwavering industry support have amassed him a diverse audience from around the world, refreshed by the direction he is taking in an effort to abandon the traditional boundaries of dance music.

Already recognized as a titan of melodic techno, Monolink presents Under Darkening Skies as a means to transport the listener deeper into the building blocks of his musical anatomy. He envelops us in the warmth of his lyrics as the brewing storm edges nearer, urging us to let go of our egos, and trusting the support of his musical guidance.

James Noble ‘Say Something’ Premiere

written by the partae

An African-Canadian rapper and producer with an undeniably compelling sound, Noble’s music takes the listener on his life journey with percussive beats and thought-provoking wordplay. In 1997, Noble connected with a group of talented emcees in Texas, who helped cultivate his ability on the mic and gave him the confidence to become a genuine artist in his own right.

In 2001, Noble began working as a pastor with inner-city youth. Doing life with people at a street level transformed the way Noble saw himself as a person and as an artist. He took to heart the lessons learned from these experiences and channeled them into his rhymes. Creating music with depth became Noble’s top priority from there. “Music is me telling my story. I’m not just writing rhetoric. It’s my life story in the form of a song that anyone with a pulse can relate to.”

Artists: GG Magree
Title: Loving You Kills Me
Label: Dim Mak Records

Download / Stream

Following her stunning 2020’s debut on Dim Mak with “Nervous Habits,” featuring Joey Fleming, GG Magree returns to Steve Aoki‘s label with her new single “Loving You Kills Me,” an emotive gem that fuses rock and trap influences. Opening with moody guitar chords, Magree‘s heartfelt vocals immediately shine through as she belts out lyrics that paint a picture of loving someone so much that it hurts. The track’s bass-heavy, electric drop adds a dark and gritty edge to the otherwise romantic context, letting the world know that GG Magree is much more than just another pretty voice. The Australian powerhouse formerly made a name for herself through the raucous “Frontlines” with Zeds Dead & NGHTMRE, “Ghost” with Jauz or “Save My Grave” with Zeds Dead & DNMO. Read more about GG‘s inspiration behind “Loving You Kills Me” below:

“I’m such an intense lover. I think I buried myself somewhere when I wrote ‘Loving You Kills Me.’ You know that feeling ‘I want to be with you till I die’ or ‘I love you so much I want to eat you alive.’ That’s how I love and why I gave birth to ‘Loving You Kills Me.’” – GG Magree

GG Magree‘s indisputable talent as a DJ, producer, and singer/songwriter has made her a triple threat in the electronic music industry. She first made waves in 2016 with her vocal debut “Frontlines,” in collaboration with Zeds Dead & NGHTMRE, which has amassed over 31M streams on Spotify alone. GG is also well known for her replay-worthy remix of Billie Eilish‘s “Wish You Were Gay,” in addition to releases such as “Flatline” alongside Sullivan King, “You Don’t Know Me,” and “Bodies.” In her native Australia and beyond, Magree has become a highly sought after artist known for bringing electric energy to audiences worldwide; by far the best way to experience GG Magree is at a live show. She has graced the stage with the likes of Pharrell, DJ Snake, Wu-Tang Clan, Zeds Dead, Virtual Self, Iggy Azalea, NGHTMRE, and many more.

Hey Felipe, thanks for taking the time to speak with us! How are you?

I’m fine, even with this pandemic I try to remain calm, positive and focus on my productions, it’s a pleasure to talk to you.

Where are you in the world right now?

I’m in Presidente Venceslau, the city where I was born in the countryside of São Paulo, Brazil

How has the last year been for you in lockdown? Have you been able to take any positives from it?

It’s been a time full of ups and downs, in many moments it’s very difficult because I’m not sure when or how the return will be, but whenever is possible I always try to keep positive thinking, and like it or not, I ended up having more time to spend with my family and myself, I have used this creative leisure to inspire me even more in the productions that are going full steam.

You’re one half of the acclaimed duo Dashdot. What was your journey like to become a successful producer and DJ?

It’s been an amazing journey, where I collect memories and beats from the most different places and tracks. I’ve made countless friends, met wonderful people and had the pleasure of producing some of the soundtracks that are part of many people’s lives.

What is your favorite memory as Dashdot?

It’s hard to choose a particular memory, but I’ve always enjoyed the international tours, we’ve had the chance to play around Europe, Asia, Australia, North and South America

What made you want to start your solo project FFLORA?

I was at a time in my life looking for more independence and a slightly more specific sound line, I already had the idea of creating a parallel project, and this whole pandemic ended up accelerating this idea.

What was the inspiration behind the new track on Ame Records?

There were some incredible inspirational vibes that kicked in from time to time during these lockdown moments, and Colors is definitely one of my favorite quarantine productions. I hope that I can sign other tracks on Ame, a brand that I identify a lot with.

How was it making with no chance to play it out or have any crowd interaction?

This is one of the biggest differences on my production process, I’d always tested my songs countless times before releasing the final version. However, I had to adapt and somehow teleport myself into the minds of different people in the crowd pretending to be listening to the track.

What would be your dream first gig back?

To tell you the through, I just want to be able to play again. Of course there are some special places and festivals, Like Ame Club itself, Warung, Green Valley, Lollapalooza, Rock In Rio and etc… But what I really want at this moment is to be able to play, doesn’t matter where.

What’s the thing your most excited about when we can return to live shows?

I’m looking forward to testing my quarantine productions, there’s a lot of music that I really believe in!
I’ve probably made more that 50 tracks these last months.

Have you discovered any records in lockdown that you’re dying to play out?

I don’t think there’s a specific track, but there’s a lot of good stuff that was produced in quarantine, whether from Brazil or abroad.

What else have you got coming up?

I have a lot of news ahead of me, from new releases and lives sets and the development of an own label.

“A whiplash giving frenzy of experimental production”

“Arguably one of the country’s most electrifying and fascinating experimental outfits”
Rolling Stone Australia

Today Eora/Sydney based electronic punk group Behind You return with ‘Extremely‘, together with the news of their forthcoming EP Absolute Forgiveness, set for independent release on July 8. LISTEN + WATCH HERE.

Of the release, the band reveal “Extremely is both a celebration and denouncement of the sensational. A car crash of the hyperreal. Say the word 15 times and it sounds like nothing.” Following the recent ‘Burning’, ‘Extremely‘ picks up where the former’s frenetic gut punch left off. The result is just as menacing, impactful and impressive as the last, with Behind You covering new territories of their unique fusion of industrial hip hop and hardcore. Language warning!

Coupling the release with another self directed video, the three set fire to the quaint and sweet on ‘Extremely‘. Films on Dharawal land revving engines and feedback bleed through the initial dreamy setting, followed by scenes of disarray. In a Gothic nightmare, Behind You fantasises of low budget motocross dreams. The band share, “The putrid greens of an energy drink, coyote screech of a braindead Suzuki engine; Behind You finds self-worship and self-sabotage in all things considered ‘extreme’.”

Based on Gadigal Land/Sydney’s Inner West, Behind You began as a duo in 2017 with a slew of singles and EPs, performing to small crowds in dark venues around the city. Things changed in 2020 with the entrance of their live percussionist and ‘More Like Flesh’ turned heads. With ‘Burning‘ the band secured rotation from FBi Radio and triple j Unearthed, with acclaim from Rolling Stone, Pilerats and more.

Now with their latest offering ‘Extremely‘ and forthcoming EP Absolute Forgiveness, Behind You continue to affirm their position as one of the country’s most exciting experimental bands. Featuring a collaboration with Newcastle alt-rap duo Craterface, Absolute Forgiveness is a thunderous collection of tracks that examine indulgence, narcissism and the microcosm of life with the treble, bass and volume on full. The result is a compelling local answer to free-genre connoisseurs black midi, Show Me The Body and more. With the clutch on full throttle, stay tuned as Behind You prepare to go airborne.

 DAYDREAMS/HEARTBREAKS

HUNNY BY RYLEY PASKAL

Faced with tour cancellations and COVID lockdowns, Southern California band HUNNY used their unplanned time off to hone their craft and become better songwriters. They launched into a home-recording educational crash course learning at home recording techniques. With these new found skills they began experimenting with production and challenged themselves to produce one new song a month.

Out of that challenge, they have released “Sports with Strangers,” “Xbox Luvr” over the last few months, and have now added their latest lo-fi indie pop single “Daydreams/Heartbreaks.”

“’Daydreams/Heartbreaks’ is about the moments in which you and your partner are both lost in thought,” says the band of the new track. “Trying to infer what they may be thinking of causes you to become trapped in spiral of insecurities. Irrational thought patterns where the negative aspects of your relationship are playing in the theatre of their mind, and you fear that they may come to realise that this all may be a mistake.”

CHECK OUT “DAYDREAMS/HEARTBREAKS” NOW

Since their formation in 2014, HUNNY have built a massive and loyal following with over 90 million streams to date and over 2 million streams per month. The band has released three EPs (2015’s Pain/Ache/Loving, 2017’s Windows I and 2018’s Windows II) and one full-length record (Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes.). Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. is the perfect mix of heavy-hearted lyrics, bright-and-shiny melodies, lovesick confession, and addictively dancey rhythms. Produced by Grammy Award-winner Carlos de la Garza (Cherry Glazerr, Paramore), the debut record came to life in November 2018 during the Woolsey Fire and Camp Fire that devastated 96,949 acres of land in Southern California.

HUNNY is Jason Yarger (vocals), Jake Goldstein (guitar), Kevin Grimmett (bass, keyboards), and Joey Anderson (drums).

The Goon Sax release new single 'Psychic' alongside video

The Goon Sax release new single ‘Psychic’ alongside video

by the partae June 10, 2021

Today, Brisbane’s The Goon Sax return with ‘Psychic‘, the second single from their third full-length album Mirror II, released by Chapter Music. The song is a slice of supernatural avant-pop – kinetic, hook-laden and touched with genuine dreaminess. Alongside the new single is a video directed by Christine Marie Jones (US Girls).

“Psychic exists in the fragile intersection of fantasy and reality,” says the band’s Louis Forster. “A supernatural world you escape into until you feel reality’s grip on your collar. But as you’re dragged back to linear time and supposed objectivity, the supernatural reinstates its claim to a more powerful truth. Eventually the friction between these worlds causes you to question your faith in both, wondering to what degree truth can be chosen and what forces from both are too strong for you to stand in their way.”

Out July 9th, Mirror II is a new beginning for The Goon Sax: a multi-dimensional eclectic journey of musical craftsmanship that moves from disco to folk to no wave skronk with staggering cohesion. Gone are the first-person insecurities of their school days – they’ve been made expansive, more universal, and more weird.

The album is intense, the sum of everything that has always made The Goon Sax great: robust sprechgesang, raw lyrical candor, ascending guitar pop structures that would make the most storied jangle bands blush, elevated into their newfound narrative verisimilitude and expanded sonic experimentations.
