HELADO NEGRO Shares new single ‘Gemini And Leo’ Announces album Far In, out October 22

Helado Negro has announced his new album Far In which will be released on October 22 via 4AD / Remote Control Records. The album’s lead single ‘Gemini And Leo’ was premiered earlier today on the tastemaker KCRW radio show Morning Becomes Eclectic in Los Angeles. The song is accompanied by an animated music video directed by Jacob Escobedo.

Far In is Helado Negro’s first album on 4AD / Remote Control Records and the seventh full-length album in his catalogue. It follows his breakthrough release This Is How You Smile which was spotlighted as Pitchfork’s #7 Best Album of 2019.

When Roberto Carlos Lange, the musician known as Helado Negro, began writing Far In immediately following the release of This is How You Smile, he could not have predicted that we would soon need to learn how to stay at home and be the stars of our domestic dance floors with intimates and online communities. In the new single ‘Gemini and Leo’, the titular pair stay indoors to discover each other anew with music recalling Roberto’s youth growing up in South Florida listening to 80s club songs, and their return sampled in 90s hip hop. Visions past and future meet in a euphoria of uptempo drums, Jen Wasner’s (Flock of Dimes) funky bass line, and Opal Hoyt’s (Zenizen) galactic swirl of warm and steely synths and bright backing vocals.

Roberto and his partner, the visual artist Kristi Sword, had planned to visit Marfa, Texas for an early 2020 residency to work on their collaborative project Kite Symphony. Once the pandemic hit, they decided to stay in Marfa through the summer, inspiring Roberto to write a significant amount of songs on the upcoming album. He wrote the new song ‘Agosto’ with his thoughts on the humid atmosphere of his hometown where flower petals and fruit fall and sweetly decay on concrete. The song features his longtime friends Buscabulla, no strangers to the melancholy pull of home in a Caribbean climate.

Throughout Roberto’s career, imagined beings, ghosts and haunted machines appear in sci-fi stories and his own conjurings. These tales make themselves at home amongst narratives that invigorate community and solidarity. His songs ‘It’s My Brown Skin’ (2016) and ‘Please Won’t Please’ (2019) assert an affirmation of Latinx identity through recurring images of brown glowing complexion, a perception that is rooted as much in a spiritual consciousness of resilience and protection, as a physical experience. On the new album Far In, Roberto says he “celebrates the ghosts,” embracing pleasure and freedom to follow the metaphysical further; the glow appears without words in new song ‘Brown Fluorescence’ – a minimal arrangement of layered, ethereal, vocal loops. He sings “We grow younger to stay strong,” on ‘Purple Tones’ with the playful bells of steel pan drums and reveling in the creative time-space of twilight and dusk, waking dreams, and transit, the self-dispersing nowhere and anywhere, but the touch of hair maintains an earthly connection to who you are and what you care about.

Driving back to Brooklyn in the fall inspired by his work in the desert, Roberto auspiciously purchased a Rhodes from a friend who 20 years earlier gave him his first synthesiser, an Arp Odyssey 2800. The electric piano was a catalyst that guided much of the remaining songwriting for the album. After time apart from a changed city, his base for fifteen years, ‘Hometown Dream’ and ‘Outside the Outside’, unapologetically look forward to new places and possibilities.

“Escape is never out there, you have to go inward,” Roberto reflects on developing an epic Helado Negro double album during these extraordinary times. Heavy, pulsing, rhythms drive ‘Aureole’ through a dystopian landscape, but as he sings of endless psychological restrictions, the shimmering radiance of expanded realms bursts through. This chiaroscuroeffect suggests a path that isn’t tuning out beneath monumental forces and anxieties, but embracing the dark of the unknown with openness, pleasure, and growth.

PIRRA ANNOUNCES NEW SINGLE ‘NEVER APART’ + EAST COAST SHOWS

by the partae June 20, 2021
written by the partae
Alternative indie pop auteurs Pirra have today announced their buoyant new single Never Apart, a synthy adventure produced by Sam Littlemore of Pnau, out June 18.  The group, whose namesake Pirra means moon in Luritja, a language spoken by the Luritja people, are set to hit the road for an east coast run of dates kicking off at Oxford Art Factory (Syd) on September 3 before moving on to The Toff (Mel) on September 10 and finishing up at Suzie Wongs Good Time Bar (Bris) on September 12.

After a year of isolation and anxiety, an exuberant track like Never Apart is a welcome, much-needed release.  It’s an irresistible bop from start to finish – synths bounce energetically as lead vocalist Jess Beck’s clever, hooky melodies earworm themselves into the listener’s memory.  Drawing upon influences such as Northeast Party House, RÜFÜS DU SOL and Running Touch, it’ll have you singing along even through the first listen.

Speaking on the creation of the track, guitarist and synth player James McKendry says, “Never Apart was produced and mixed by Sam Littlemore (aka Sam La More) of Pnau.  He really challenged us to get out of our safe zone.  Never Apart started as an instrumental track Curtis (our bass player) was working on for days.  Eventually he emerged from his music cave and then I wrote the vocal melodies and lyrics.  The lyrics are vaguely about feeling connected to somebody, no matter the distance, but I wanted to make a melody that felt easy to sing along to and that people could find their own meaning to.  We were definitely inspired by Pnau, and had been listening to their album Changa around that time, although we never dreamed we would end up working with Sam Littlemore on this song!”

Pirra are currently signed to CR2 Records in London, who also represent electronic dance heroes Carl Cox and Camelphat.  Reflecting on how the deal came about, James explains, “At the time a publisher and friend of ours Rob Scott knew our music was headed in a dance direction so he got in contact with the head of CR2 Mark Brown and showed him our track Under the Skyline.  Mark loved the track, as well as some of the other demos we sent him so he offered us a record deal.  Since then, it’s been such a thrill to collaborate with some of our heroes and we’re pumped about some upcoming collaborations we hope to announce soon.”

Pirra is James McKendry (guitar, synth), Jess Beck (vocals), Curtis Argent (bass, synth) and Jeffrey Argent (drums)

Never Apart is out now on BLK&WHT RCRDS

‘People Like You’ begins with unwavering bass and sedative vocals as the tranquil verse is kept at a steady pace, before the song launches into its merciless chorus complete with blistering guitars and vigorous drums. A half-time bridge initiates avid variance before assertively chanted gang vocals drive the song towards its immense finale.

OUT NOW
Continuing Maya Jane Coles’ impressive mastery of Techno, the approachable and intense double A-side EP pairs Maya’s foundational cross-genre production qualities with the M.F.S: Observatory signature big room house sound; a driving and consistently authentic style that they have explored at a notably rapid pace via releases on Green Velvets’ Relief, Skint,  and many more of the scenes respected labels.

Maya recently curated a four live stream reisdency for Beatport which included M.F.S: Observatory’s Matthias Turchetti and Francesco Cozzolino as part of her takeover as “Rising Stars”. Other guests on the stream ranged from Cinthie and Anja Schneider through to Truncate and Dense & Pika.

The EP’s release not only demonstrates Maya in demand production credentials and collaborative attitude but follows on from a flurry of recent lockdown activity and creative output, including the huge drop of the animated video drop to her Nocturnal Sunshine Pull Up” ft Young M.A & Gangsta Boo and an alternative release under her CAYAM alias on Alan Fitzpatrick’s We Are The Brave – currently riding high on the underground techno charts.

The relentlessness of “Know About” is fortified by its sturdy techno foundations, doused In Maya’s trademark un-easing melodics, while the production pair are joined on “Watch & Learn” by Chicago-born Mexican-American artist Kid Enigma who’s hip-house inspired vocals bounce hypnotically across an equally lucid groove.

Both artists remind us that tougher house music and more melodic-focused impulses can work beautifully in tandem and with a step closer to the return of the dancefloors we should expect to hear these from a dark club corner very soon.

Originally launched in 2020, Move The Record was devised in response to the uncertain future and economic strain that independent record stores worldwide have faced due to the pandemic.
This summer the streaming initiative will return for 4 consecutive Thursdays from July 1st — 4x 6-hour broadcasts from stores around the world featuring residents and special guests, with a view to driving online sales and footfall to shops that can open, and to encourage customers to invest in their local spot.
Supporters can also contribute and buy merch via a Crowdfunder, with 100% of proceeds to be split evenly across the stores.
The first edition last year featured Phonica (London), KMA60 (Berlin), Subwax (Barcelona), Deficit (Moscow), Halcyon (New York), Hâus (Buneos Aires) and more, with artists such as Bradley Zero, Dana Ruh, Steffi, Prins Thomas, Josh Cheon, Fred P all performing.
Edition #2 stores include Kristina Records (London), Café Artum (Birmingham), Mad Piano (Bucharest), Seawolf Records (Amsterdam), NUT Records (Barcelona), La Rama (Montreal) and more.
Edition #2 performers include Prosumer, Ingi Visions, Adam Shelton, Carista, San Proper, Willow, Hon, Anna Wall, Kerrie, Glowzi, Jus-Ed, Nick Anthony Simoncino, Molly and more.

Multi-Platinum R3HAB and Kelvin Jones Want To Take You “Downtown” With New Deep House Influenced Collaboration

If you’ve ever looked for the perfect song to define the feeling of cruising your favorite city right before a night out on the town, look no further than R3HAB‘s new single “Downtown,” which he made in collaboration with Kelvin Jones. Taking a break from the sounds of traditional electronic music, R3HAB cultivates the ultimate cool-kid vibe on “Downtown” with a deep, minimal bassline. The nonchalant and yet groovy mood is complemented by Kelvin‘s soulful vocals, which paint a complete picture of being whisked into a night of luxury amid the big city lights. “Downtown” follows R3HAB‘s recent big collaboration “Pues” with Luis Fonsi and Sean Paul, which saw the Dutch/Moroccan artist exploring with Latin and R&B influences. Check out what Kelvin and R3HAB have to say about their new track below:

“‘Downtown‘ is a club-inspired record with a bouncy beat drop and a pulsing bassline that support powerful vocals from Kelvin Jones. We wanted to capture the magic of the perfect night in the city. You’re with your friends, the club’s bass is beating through your blood, your legs are sore from dancing all night, you feel invincible.” – R3HAB

“‘Downtown‘ is a mood in a song! We imagined how it would feel to be in New York cruising downtown in a Cadillac and what song you’d want to hear. This inspired the whole song. In an era where every song is overloaded with things going on, we decided to go against that and keep it as minimal and laid back as we could whilst still keeping the groove going.” – Kelvin Jones

Dutch–Moroccan Multi-Platinum DJ and producer Fadil El Ghoul, better known as R3HAB, has been trailblazing his way through dance music for the better part of the last decade. From his breakthrough remixes for Rihanna, Drake, Taylor Swift, Calvin Harris, The Chainsmokers, Lady Gaga, to anthems such as Gold– and Platinum-certified “All Around The World (La La La)” and “Lullaby,” to his collaborations with the likes of Luis Fonsi, Sean Paul, ZAYN, Andy Grammer, Sofia Carson, Smokepurpp, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Astrid S, Olivia Holt and more, R3HAB has proven to be one of the most talented and forward-thinking artists in the game, whose work collected over 5B streams to date. In 2016 R3HAB founded his label CYB3RPVNK, which has passed 2B streams across all platforms since its inception. R3HAB himself continues to evolve and diversify his sound by working with a variety of artists around the globe, pushing the boundaries of dance music as he collaborates across genres and languages. In 2020 alone R3HAB celebrated over 900M Spotify streams. He is currently the most discovered artist on Spotify, one of Spotify‘s top 150 most streamed artists across all genres worldwide, and ranked #13 on prestigious DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJs chart. With his combination of innate artistry and innovative attitude, in 2021 R3HAB is continuing his journey among electronic music’s elite.

Kelvin Jones has achieved Spotify plays and YouTube views counted in millions, racked up over 3M monthly listeners on Spotify and earned Gold and Platinum records. “Downtown” is the successor to Kelvin Jones‘ most recent releases “Pillow” and “Don’t Let Me Go,” a Top 10 track on German radio, and “Love To Go,” a collaboration with Lost Frequencies & Zonderling. The latter garnered over 75M streams on Spotify alone, peaked #2 on German Airplay chart, and has been certified Gold in The Netherlands and Platinum in Belgium. In 2015, his hit single “Call You Home” was one of the Top 10 radio tracks of the year in Germany and reached Gold status. “Only Thing We Know” with Alle Farben and YouNotUs has accumulated over 50M plays on Spotify, nearly 18M views on YouTube, peaked #1 on German Airplay chart, and is certified Gold. “Seventeen” – another collaborative track with YouNotUs, peaked #3 on the German airplay chart.

Health Club

by the partae June 18, 2021
written by the partae

https://backl.ink/146802140To celebrate the release of Have Like Like that on Off Leash Records, we sat down with Lucas (PKA Health Club) for a chat about where things are for him and the music, right now.

Greetings Lucas, for those that don’t know about Health Club, how long have you been at this project and how would you describe the music?

Hello! I’ve been writing music under Health Club for around 3 or 4 years now.  When I first started the project I was listening to and influenced by a lot of soul, funk and neo soul, which led me to this sort of pop/neo soul output.  I’ve always really enjoyed lower tempos; they leave a lot of space between the beats and allow for more explorations in groove.

This new track of yours “Have It Like That” on Off Leash Records, is a funky, soulful record. The vocals remind me a little of early UK dance, but then there’s an almost American style janggly hip-hop beat plus some very Australian usage of the saw synths. Is it deliberate for you to merge styles or is that something that just happened organically?

I think initially I had leaned into some more of the UK feel on an earlier version – using some parallel harmony, 909s n what not but at some point, I just started from scratch and played with a new, more soulful angle.  It all just unwound from there and I found myself throwing a slap bass in the chorus.  I do love intentional use of juxtapositions or clashing of ideas but in this case, I think it just happened.

Are there specific influences that contributed to the tone of this track? If so, who are they?

Pharrell is always a massive influence, and if you get down to it a lot of the more current influences would also lead back to him too.  People like Lynda Dawn, kaytranada, Mndsgn & Toro y Moi; are very key components of the sound I’ve created with this release.  Can’t forget to mention Patrice Rushen, I don’t think I could go a couple days without listening to her.

Some of your more recent singles have been closer to a house/disco tempo. Are we gonna hear you stick around in these more open grooves for a while?

Definitely.  I’ve been DJing a lot over the past year or two – more than I have in years.  I’ve been listening to and playing heaps of late 80s and 90s stuff, especially Italo and Dream House.  I think I’d like to explore writing some actual club music very soon.

For the production nerds out there, are there any favourite instruments, plugins or tools that can be heard on “Have It Like That” and what do you like about them?

A lot of the lead and mono sounds on this one are from an sh101 remake.  The original was my first synth and when they brought the modern remake out, I had to get it.  I’ve used Soundtoys ‘Crystallizer’ for some of the lush background sonics too, definitely worth giving that thing some praise.  And, on every song, I’ve used the prophet 08 – in this case, for the big saw pads in the chorus.

No doubt, Electronic music is in a strange place worldwide with limited capacities and not much of a festival scene. How has Queensland been of late? Are you and your contemporaries able to go out and play shows? How do they feel?

It’s taken some time but we’re back to what feels like normal.  The limited capacity is still in place of course, and is quite a point of tension, with other areas of society seemingly “immune” to covid safety restrictions and procedures. Friends are throwing shows nearly every weekend, to smaller and maybe more dedicated crowds.  People are aware of the limited release, so the tickets are bought up quick and the attendance is always in high spirits.  I’ve even caught some shows from international artists which seems crazy.

On, that; If you could play support to any international headliner, who would it be and why would that be an awesome show for Health Club?

Probably someone like Erika De Casier or Toro y Moi. I feel like any show they would do would be awesome regardless of my involvement, and would be great to be a part of it.

What about in the studio? Who would be a dream collaboration for Health Club and why do you think it would work?

Adam Bainbridge (Kindness) or Joseph Mount (Metronomy).  They’re not exactly current influences on the music I’ve released but they’re two of the biggest contributors to my high school obsession with music.  They’re both artists that I feel pushed pop music in really interesting directions and reference some great records in their own ways.  I’d like to think over the years I’ve found a lot of the same influences that drove them to make their work and would hopefully have a common ground to draw inspiration from.

What’s next for Health Club is there anything you’d like to leave us with?

More music, and hopefully soon.  Earlier this year I played a live show with my friend Millie, the first I’d played in years.  It left me excited to work on it further and look into performing more live shows in the near future.

Superchorus, the DIY indie project of David Gauci today shares his elliptical debut EP, Back Online. LISTEN HERE.

Joining the previously released title track, that considers human interactions on and offline, is the laid back ‘Slip Away‘, an ode to romanticism over time, and wanting to hold onto that spark, written in one pouring. ‘Race Is Run‘, the first and fastest song written, comments on the passing of time and how despite the world around us changing, sometimes things stay the same, old habits are repeated and mistakes never learnt from. ‘Love To Give‘ is a shoegaze heavy layering of arpeggiated synths and thudding drums, forming a haunted dream of what could be. David explains “It’s a song about dreaming of things outside of your control, but still keeping a level head, so that if everything falls apart, it’s not much different from where you began.” Closing Back Online is ‘I Want To Be The One‘, an uplifting, whimsical number that could feel right at home on the Submarine soundtrack.

Of his formal debut as Superchorus, David shares “Releasing this EP is a huge personal moment for me. Having been involved extensively in the local music scene since 2014, it is a really nice feeling to finally be able to release a body of my own work that I’m extremely proud of. I’ve been chipping away at my sound for the better part of the past decade, so it is with great pleasure that I can put out this EP and be happy with every single part of it! It finally feels like a really good time for Superchorus to become a thing, as I’ve spent a long time collaborating with people and playing in other people’s bands, and it’s really taught me that patience and persistence isn’t all for nothing. I feel like I have really matured as a musician and a songwriter, and have been so lucky to have all of the opportunities I’ve received over the years.”

Across Back Online is a journey of self reflection, exploring loneliness, unrequited love and more through its five tracks. “I spent a lot of time alone while writing this EP, and I think it’s pretty evident from the themes and subjects explored” he continues. What sets Superchorus apart from the crowd is David’s driving passion to share music that’s there for you through everything, whether it be times of joy or to lean on through moments of sadness, to express what you wished you could to someone else, or to give assurance to your deepest thoughts. If there’s one thing to take away from Superchorus’ debut, it’s that sometimes, the thing you’ve been searching for has been sitting in front of you this whole time and may very well be untapped within oneself.

Today Mulubinba / Newcastle alt-rap duo Craterface announce their new online mix series, The Divine Chatroom: a virtual space for their community to congregate and connect, while sharing new crevices of the Craterface underworld. See all airdate details BELOW.

Of the series, Craterface share: “We decided to begin making the divine chatroom series when we found ourselves at a crossroads. We wanted to hone our craft by making as much music as we could while also finding a way to have our musical peers involved in the process. Thematically we chose to go with a chatroom and internet based aesthetic because we all use it, a key word is connectivity. We like to see the series as us connecting and interacting with these peers we were eager to work with, while having them adjust to this completely unique thematic universe. The whole experience has been incredible and has taught us so much not only about ourselves, but the greater scope of Australian music.”

WATCH: THE DIVINE CHATROOM (TRAILER)

In Episode 1, premiering tonight, June 16 at 7PM via Youtube livestream, is a handful of Craterface demos lifted from vault, flips and edits of Lil Yachty, Lil B and more. In their quest for connection, the two sought to reach out to friends and artists who hadn’t released new music in some time, striving to present both a detailed and wonderfully chaotic audio collage- as represented through the artwork. In doing so, they were gifted unreleased tracks from Behind You, Jair, LOVEDAVID, Babyjack, Yoni Yen and Aquinas.

They continue, “We also asked all guest artists to envision The Divine Chatroom as a place of infinite potential and even requested audio intro’s for their songs to create a more authentic listening experience (best heard in LOVEDAVID and BABYJACK intro). It wasn’t hard getting all of these artists to catch the vibe because they are all so talented.” Can you guess whose piece is featured where? Stay tuned for details on Episode 2.

Rat City

by the partae June 16, 2021
written by the partae

What is your name and role within Rat City?

My name is Lasse Michelsen, and I’m a producer/songwriter and a member of Rat City.

Where are you currently based?

 Oslo.

What’s been happening recently and how has your Covid experience been?

Right now, I’m on daddy’s leave, so it’s all about getting through the day with my nine month old daughter. It’s a lot of fun! Covid-19 hasn’t really affected our daily work as much as other businesses. We’re used to being stuck alone in the studio.

Your new single ‘Rather Be’, a collaboration with Isak Heim, is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

The sound is based on what we have released earlier, horns, live bass etc. Kind of an organic sound mixed up with house/disco-vibe. I have no clue what to call it… Since there are so many songwriters involved, I can only speak for myself, but I think it’s about cutting loose from a bad relationship or person.

How did you come to collab with Isak and how was the experience?

We have worked with Isak on several previous releases, so it was very natural for us to ask him to sing on the song. He has an amazing voice!

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who with?

All recordings are done in our own studio in Drammen (Norway). Phil Tan (U.S) on the mix and Sing Master on the master.

How did you approach the recording/production process?

Like we always do, press record and use your imagination.

What does ‘Rather Be’ mean to you?

A lot! It’s one of a few records that we still love to listen to.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

 Kamara, she is really talented.

What do you like to do away from music?

Fly Fishing, hunting and hiking in the mountains.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2021?

 Make more music!

Favourite food and place to hangout?

A nice meal in the tent on the tundra after a long day of fishing.

FOR NEW SINGLE
“HEAVEN IS A PLACE IN MY HEAD”

ANNOUNCE U.S TOUR DATES
SUPPORTING ANGELS & AIRWAVES

BAD SUNS BY LUPE BUSTOS

Los Angeles-based band Bad Suns recently shared their catchy new single “Heaven Is A Place In My Head,” produced by the band’s longtime producer Eric Palmquist.

After rewatching David Lynch’s cult classic Twin Peaks, vocalist Christo Bowman “suddenly felt the urge to write this sugary pop punk song, dressed up in leather, glitter, 80’s synthesisers and chiming guitars.” The summery sound and up tempo vibe of the song, however, were inspired by the excitement provoked at the thought of hitting the road this fall.

“The band had recently started experimenting with writing songs together over the internet,” adds Bowman on making the song. “I emailed everybody the track and we immediately began writing the lyrics and melodies on a video call. I remember falling asleep and waking up with the chorus playing over and over again in my head. I think something about the song scared us, and we tried to forget about it. We didn’t mention it for six months until our producer played us the demo and said ‘remember this?’ We all looked at each other and collectively thought ‘This is amazing, we need to record this right now’.”

Today, the band share the colourful and vibey music video for the track directed by Logan Rice.

THE BUCKLEYS SET TO RELEASE EMOTIONALLY VULNERABLE BALLAD ‘BREATHE’

by the partae June 16, 2021

“Hottest Creatives to Watch in 2021.” The Australian

“Breathe seems built for American radio and stardom.” Sydney Morning Herald

“A blend of Country, Pop, Indie and Americana with a sprinkle of Fleetwood Mac…” Honey Pop

Today, Byron Bay siblings, THE BUCKLEYS release a remixed version of their second worldwide and fourth Australian single, “Breathe,” via Petrol Records / Universal Music Australia / UMe that is set to hit commercial radio this week.

Listen to “Breathe”  HERE

The single was recorded and co-written by Sarah Buckley and two-time Grammy Award winning producer and engineer Chad Carlson, whose credits include Taylor Swift, Jewel and the Hunger Games soundtrack.

“‘Breathe’ was our musical prayer to the world,” explains THE BUCKLEYS singer Sarah Buckley. “I wrote this song at a time when Australia was experiencing devastating bushfires. It was a message of strength, vulnerability, hurt, hope and moving forward. I find myself remembering these lyrics in moments where I just need to stop, close my eyes, listen to the sounds of world around me and just breathe.

Today this song has a far more personal meaning to us.  This track was our label chairman and mentor Chris Murphy’s favourite song on our album, his passing earlier this year has been incredibly difficult to come to terms with, we performed the song at his funeral, and now it will always hold a very special place in our hearts.”

The equally emotive “Breathe” music video was created by Louis Murphy the son of the late Chris Murphy and creative direction was provided by Amy Tinkham,  who Chris had formed an incredible partnership with.   Amy took the lead as the Creative and Live Show Director for The BUCKLEYS album performance, DAYDREAM AT THE CHURCH, Live from Byron Bay.

“It was a wonderful experience to collaborate with both the band and the incredible mastermind that is Chris Murphy.  Collectively, we brought his vision to life and created the perfect foundation for THE BUCKLEYS to showcase their music, sound and style in a unique and authentic presentation live from Byron Bay.” Said, Amy Tinkham.

Adds Linda Kury, VP Commercial Partnerships & Label Relations, UMG, “I have had the pleasure of watching THE BUCKLEYS develop an ever-growing fan base in Australia, the US and worldwide. The pandemic limited their ability to tour, but they launched their first single and toured the world, all virtually from Byron Bay. At every virtual club show, radio station visit, press interview and fan listening party, they have won over people with their music and charismatic personalities. They have built solid relationships due to their natural talent and sincere enthusiasm. Now, we look forward to introducing them in person to their fans around the globe.

Over the past year THE BUCKLEYS have continued to impact the Australian and global media, their recent release of their up-tempo track “Money” saw the band transition to commercial radio and the young trio celebrated a series of additions across various radio networks.

Sarah Buckley has also spent the past 12 months working on her song writing and was this week shortlisted for the 2021 APRA Professional Development Awards that will be announced later this month.

Promoters began to book the rising stars on major festival stages and the band were recently announced to play at Byron Bay’s iconic Bluesfest in October later this year, Gympie and Savannah.

“Every so often, something special comes along. Something so cool and authentic that the world has no choice but to sit up and take notice. THE BUCKLEYS are that special something.” American Songwriter

Joe Terror & Hollie Joyce

Joe Terror & Hollie Joyce

by the partae June 16, 2021
written by the partae

Where are you currently based?

Hollie – I live between two places – Northcote and Ocean Grove, Victoria. Basically, part time city, part time coast life.
Joe- I am based in Brunswick, Victoria. I made the move to Melbourne almost five years ago from rural NSW.

How did you first start playing music?

Joe – I was always fixated on music from a very young age. I’d set up pretend microphones and make my family gather around for living room concerts, singing along to CD’s. When I got my first guitar, I was about eight years old. I’d lock myself in rooms and just listen to notes ring out for hours.

At the age of thirteen I began teaching myself songs on the guitar and jamming with a friend from high school, he was becoming a great guitarist, so in order to start our band I scored a drum kit scholarship at the Clarence Valley Conservatorium to be able to afford lessons and got my chops up on the kit.

Hollie – Yeh! I was pretty similar actually, I grew up in a family of performers so I was always surrounded by people performing music, dancing etc, basically a lot of big personalities. I started learning the piano with my Nanna, but quickly became uninterested in playing covers and wanted to write songs of my own. I would have books and books of little poems with this monophonic 80’s Casio that only played one note at a time but it had a recording function so I would layer parts for hours over the best/worst beats you’ve ever heard. I was probably 13 when I started having a crack at writing songs on guitar, dad bought me an SG shaped black Ibanez electric guitar but I never played it because I had my eye on his 70’s acoustic guitar that I still play to this day.

What’s been happening recently and how has your Covid experience been?

Joe – As you know Melbourne has just endured it’s fourth lockdown. This time around I have personally lost one The Stained Daisies show, of which we rehearsed for months in advance training extra band members, one Tug show on the 12th and we are still holding our breaths about whether we will be able to do the launch for DEA on the 18th of June.

Covid sucks.

Hollie – Thank goodness for the daily quiz.

Your new single ‘Dea’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

Joe – I was at the back end of writing my last album “Songs to Track Down To”, a very mellow bunch of folk songs, when I decided to start writing and recording something that completely polarised what I was pushing out at the time. I began working on the “Queen of Smiles, Blues & the Devil” concept. I had planned that it was to be a straight up rock album with the same kind of poetic value that the previous album had, only yelling it this time. So I guess the sound and energy I was pushing in Dea was a product of me somewhat challenging myself to embrace an essence of anger whilst I worked on something very peaceful.

How did you approach the song writing process and how did you come to work together?

Joe – I approached Hollie online with the instrumental version of the track and asked if she would like to contribute some kind of vocal layering to flesh out the groove. Once she had done that we decided it wasn’t finished and Hollie agreed to throw some words at it. She was given the album name “Queen of Smiles, Blues & the Devil” and came back with what is now “DEA”.

Hollie – I remember constantly sending you updated versions of little clips being like, “do you like this?” “what about THIS?” until I realised you just wanted me to do my thing haha.

Joe, how was the experience working with Hollie?

Joe – Working with Hollie was everything you’d hope for in a collaboration. It was a great mix of fun and serious as we dipped into each other’s worlds for a moment.

Hollie, how was the experience working with Joe?

Hollie – Same! Working with Joe was just so easy considering we didn’t really know each other before this. I agree, a healthy amount of being ridiculous and then working hard.

Where and when did you record/produce master and who with?

Joe – The Instruments were all recorded and mixed by myself at my home studio in Brunswick. All of Hollie’s parts were recorded and mixed by Hollie on top of the instrumental track. It was then mastered by Aidan Bateman.

How did you approach the recording process?

Joe – My zoom R24 is my writing tool. I’ll have a riff or a groove and just keep adding layers of instruments into the recording device, and that is the product you hear. That’s how Joe Terror music has always worked.

Hollie – I basically imported the track Joe sent me into logic and just wrote everything directly in producing and mixing as I went along.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Joe – This week I have been listening to “Still Sad”, a playlist by Mikey Young & Anthology records, a follow up to the 2019 “Sad About The Times”. It’s brilliant. Also, Big Thief Live at Bunker Studio, Pig Lib by Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks, Hurtsville by Jack Ladder and a heap of Sarah Mary Chadwick.

Hollie – I’ve been getting stuck into the album “On” by Altin Gün, Pete Drake, but mostly the song “forever”, The Kevin Fingier Collective and Imarhan.

What do you like to do away from music?

Joe – I enjoy working in the country and being in the bush. I have also recently taken a liking to bartending. It can be a fun social environment and somewhat keeps me out of trouble.

Hollie – I’m usually chipping away at something, whether it’s in the garden, or writing something, painting, drawing, cooking etc. I also tend to plant my feet either in the dirt or by the water.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2021?

Joe – I’ll be trying to tackle as many Joe Terror shows as I can in the next couple of months along with another few singles from the album. For the majority of September, I will be back in the country looking after a bunch of goats and recording some new stuff. Most of October I’ll be touring the East Coast with The Stained Daisies. Then maybe in November I can finally have the full album out and see out the year with Joe Terror shows.

Favourite food and place to hang out?

Joe – Space food sticks. On the moon.

Hollie – Wait woah, I want to be on the moon too so naturally I’ll also need some space food sticks, if you have any.
