Tess Anderson ‘Northern Lights’ Premiere

by the partae May 9, 2021
written by the partae

Vancouver-based singer-songwriter Tess Anderson enchants audiences with her candid performances. Open and unapologetic, she invites listeners into her most vulnerable moments through honest and authentic storytelling. Whether alone on stage with nothing but a keyboard and a guitar, or backed by a full band, she’s been known to silence crowds with her captivating musical presence. Pulling inspiration everywhere from old-school jazz standards to modern pop, her sound is heavily driven by her unmistakable voice.

Growing up in Victoria, BC, Tess’s debut into the music industry began at the rookie age of 12. Training as a vocalist and pianist, she began songwriting as a form of self-expression, finding numerous performance opportunities at a young age. By 15 she had recorded and released a self-produced 7-song album (under a different alias), quickly followed by her first sold-out show and national radio play on CBC. Moving to Vancouver in 2016 to pursue her career further, she received a diploma in songwriting, audio engineering, and music production. Tess went on to sign her first record deal with indie label BCR in 2019, become a finalist in the 2020 Canadian Songwriter Challenge, receive a 2021 Amplify BC Grant for her upcoming project, and build an impressive catalogue of original material.

With 42 live shows in 2019 and two single releases, Tess continues to build a name for herself in the Vancouver music scene. With a recent focus on collaboration, her latest endeavours include working with a range of local and international songwriters and producers, while spending time in the recording studio gearing up for an independent EP release coming summer 2021. With over ten years of songwriting and performance experience, her momentum and drive are only amplifying.

Freqish Releases Sultry House Single “Falling For You,” Featuring Saxophone Player Jason Whitmore. Out Now on Nervous Records

Label: Nervous Records

Legendary house and hip-hop NYC-based label Nervous Records is proud to debut Denver-based producer Freqish with his new single “Falling For You,” featuring saxophonist Jason Whitmore. The track is a euphonious house gem that incorporates organic live instrumentals for an extra special touch of groove. “Falling For You” begins with piano chords that lead into a melodic breakdown, while its sultry vocal riffs complement Whitmore‘s stunning saxophone solo. With each release Freqish invites instrumentalists to capture the raw energy of a live band, and thus the track conjures images of dancing under dim lights with lovers, friends, and strangers. This release is his third since the inception of Freqish in 2020, and follows his recent single “Let’s Get High” on Claude VonStroke‘s Dirtybird label. Check out Freqish‘s creative process around “Falling For You” below:

“I made this track in the middle of a pandemic, which oddly enough is when I actually found true love. A time when others felt isolated and alone. I felt solace for others who were lonely in their homes with limited human connection. I wanted to give people a reason to find hope through a dire time. Even in the darkness, you can find light if you just let the music guide you. When I was an intern at a studio in Chicago I always loved the vibe that came from getting artists together. When you get a bunch of creative minds in one space, it’s like magic. Now through the internet, we have the ability to connect with one another, which is truly beautiful. This was my best attempt at recreating the studio vibe. I spend a lot of time on the phone with my artists trying to understand their creative process. I don’t tell them how to create, I just let their soul do the talking so that our end result is 100.” – Freqish

Brandon Lee is the DJ, producer, and studio engineer behind the Freqish project, who has over 20 years of experience cutting his teeth in the music industry. His career has brought him to play at clubs such as The Church, Club Vinyl, and Beta Nightclub in his native Denver, as well as a two-year residency at Chicago‘s iconic Sound Bar. His releases under the Freqish alias have found homes on well-known house labels like Gettoblaster‘s We Jack, DJ Dan‘s InStereo Recordings, and Claude VonStroke‘s Dirtybird Records. As far as Freqish is concerned, the song isn’t final until more artists are in the mix; his approach to collaborating is not only a way to bring new sounds to a genre in which samples of samples of samples have become the norm, but as an avenue to build the careers of a growing community of musicians. With “Falling For You,” Lee proves yet again his talent as a multifaceted producer, and we can’t wait to see what he comes up with next.

Platinum producer Felix Cartal announces the release of his upcoming album “Expensive Sounds For Nice People” on the 25th of June via Physical Presents. Ahead of the album release, the producer teams up with British pop icon Karen Harding on the stunning single “Only One.” Felix Cartal has already released several hit singles from the album, including “Mine” with Sophie Simmons, and “Love Me” (which are both certified Platinum) with “Love Me” (featuring the singer LIGHTS) also winning the Dance Recording of the Year at the Junos 2020. His previous single, “Get What You Give” also reached Platinum. Felix‘s recent single, “Happy Hour” with Kiiara was featured on 32 Spotify New Music Friday playlists and Billboard‘s Best New Dance Tracks and Popular Charts.

High energy, high romance, and high expectations are carrying us into the summer with Felix Cartal‘s latest single, “Only One,” featuring the stunning songstress Karen Harding and her unforgettable style. A playful attitude radiates throughout the single as the “give and take” atmosphere harnessed between the unique production style and powerful vocals lead us into a day of flirty fun and nights with blurry memories.

Felix Cartal tells us about the creation of the single: “I wrote this one with Karen, Chelsea, and Nick during a spontaneous session in LA. I feel like I have two modes when I make music, mode 1 would be something with an emotional heaviness, and mode 2 would be a response to just break away and make something that’s more of an uplifting escape. It was the summer, and I definitely was in mode 2.”

Karen Harding further elaborates on the single: “I loved this writing session. We were all on such a high, and I think it definitely came across in the song. We wanted to write a song about that overwhelming feeling of when you know someone is ‘the one‘, we’ve all felt it at some point.”

Vancouver-based Felix Cartal has collaborated with several major artists such as Kaskade, R3HAB, Gallant, and has also created official remixes for the likes of Selena Gomez, Zedd, Galantis, Dillon Francis, MØ, Ellie Goulding, Diplo, Anne-Marie & Doja Cat, as well as Daya & Shallou‘s “Older.” He has been featured by major Youtube channels, such as Trap Nation, Mr. Suicide Sheep, Mr. Revillz, Chill Nation, The Vibe Guide, Selected, xKito amongst others, and has earned over 360 million plays across platforms. He has also seen support from BBC Radio 1‘s Danny Howard and Diplo & Friends, and Sirius XM has also heavily supported several singles, while his Weekend Workout radio show is also featured on Sirius XM’s Diplo’s Revolution.

The UK hit singer-songwriter Karen Harding‘s impressive body of work now surpasses 400 million combined Spotify streams. After the worldwide success of her previous single “Un-Do My Heart,” with Digital Farm Animals now passing 20 million streams, her current UK single with Shift K3Y titled “Morning” is on airwaves across the world. Hailing from Durham County, Karen will next be leading into her first-ever mini-album due in July on Ultra Music.

BELOVED AMERICAN POP BAND HOT CHELLE RAE RETURN WITH PARTY ANTHEM ‘DO THE DAMN THING’

by the partae May 7, 2021
written by the partae

Beloved American pop band Hot Chelle Rae (HCR) are back!

The fun-loving boys from Nashville return to Australian radio today with their infectious new single “Do The Damn Thing”

Hot Chelle Rae was founded in Nashville circa 2005 and today consists of Ryan Follese, Nash Overstreet and Jamie Follese.  Having grown up in musically-inclined households, the three came of age among the songwriting community in Nashville.  Hence the foundation upon which HCR was built and boils down to really good music.

The band gained widespread acclaim from their 2011 triple platinum single “Tonight Tonight,” which went #1 across Top 40 radio and sold over 3 million copies, while their single “I Like It Like That” peaked at #28 on the US Billboard Hot 100.

Their skills as songsmiths are mirrored by their live performance chops, refined through years of touring alongside the likes of Taylor Swift, Demi Lovato and Justin Bieber, HCR has become known for their incredible musicianship and intoxicating energy on stage.

Garnering over 9M followers across their social media platforms and millions of fans on YouTube the band are consistently engaged with their global audience.

In 2015 they took a break from the limelight, focusing on their careers as songwriters. During this time, their individual crafts flourished, inspiring them to join forces once again.  Slated with a batch of A+ tunes and sound indicative of their growth as writers and people, HCR draws on optimistic themes, a general feel-good mentality and snapshots from their personal lives and experiences.

Coming off their char- topping success of their single “I Hate LA,” Hot Chelle Rae dropped “Do The Damn Thing” featuring Chord Overstreet and LEVI in the US last week.  The track was immediately added to over 24 leading playlists such as New Music Friday, Global New Music, New In Pop, and Pandora, the catchy, fun pop tune continues to build momentum and is out now in Australia on Three Amigos Records.

“We’re excited to be releasing Do The Damn Thing. In a time where everything has been negative and heavy,  this song is something positive and light for people to have fun and party to.” Hot Chelle Rae

DARK HUMOURED DARRIN BRADBURY SHARES VIDEO FOR NEW TRACK “PIZZA & DRUGS”

“His caustic reflections are delivered with dark humour: He makes everyday life funny, and he makes you smile with the weirder scenarios he brings to life.” – NPR Music

“Bradbury’s catalog is built with memorable songs that deal with the humour and heartache of modern American life.” – American Songwriter

“I’ve been an addict all my life, all types, big and small,” said Nashville storyteller Darrin Bradbury while explaining the inspirations behind his latest track, titled “Pizza & Drugs”. “I’ve been addicted to drugs, food, television, applause, love, sex, good conversation, highways, skateboards, colours, mopeds, booze, words, and brush strokes. People who aren’t addicts tend to understand it’s something you’re born with but often don’t get it’s something you die with regardless of whether you’re using or not.”

Directed by Joshua Shoemaker, the song’s new video is quite literally filled to the brim with pizza and pills.

Listen and watch it HERE.

“This song, along with all the other songs is just another attempt to shout something into the bowels of a void before it swallows you,” Bradbury continues. “Go get high to it, see what it says – but if you do, I’d recommend you go bold: do a drug your mama would gasp at, find yourself belly down on motel carpet staring at the foot of a bed counting dust bunnies with a little blood coming out ya nose. Or just order a pizza – cuz life is what it makes of you when you go out trying to make something of it…”

Last month Bradbury released the song “Deanna, Deanna”, his first new music in two years. “The punk graced song has more than enough charm to stay with you well after you hear it, if you’re already not hitting repeat to play it over and over,” said Closed Captioned.

Listen to it HERE.

Bradbury’s critically acclaimed album Talking Dogs & Atom Bombs was released 2019. Upon its release No Depression of the record: “Darrin Bradbury spins magic, both dark and light, out of the mundane…Talking Dogs & Atom Bombs almost never acquiesces to hopelessness without finding some little twist of humour or moment of wonder to relish.”

Marcelo De La Vega

Where are you currently based?

I was born in Sydney, but I live in London now. I’ve been here for 4 years and I love it. No plans on leaving anytime soon. Although I do miss the sun sometimes.

How did you first start playing music?

I got expelled from high school and the only school that would let me in after that was an arts-driven school called Reddam house in Bondi Beach. It was filled with creative opportunities which my school prior hadn’t been, it was the first time I’d seen the popular group be filled with smart and artistic people opposed to the archetypal athlete alpha-male. I somehow managed to con my way into an audition for a new band some of the kids were starting. I had to learn “DamnIt” by Blink 182 in a week, I was a pretty horrible guitar player, and I could only just hold a note with my voice. I somehow managed to live up to my bold claims of being both a great vocalist and guitarist, at least for that song. Hanging out with those guys, I really found my passion for being in a group of people and playing the music you all love. Playing in a group is still to this day my favourite way to write music

What’s been happening recently?

I’ve been writing my next record! Over lock down I set up a studio in my house, so I’ve basically just been writing and recording every day. it’s definitely made the last 6 months much easier. Other than that I’ve just released my debut EP and that was so exciting to finally have out. It’s so nice to know people are listening and hopefully enjoying these songs.

You’ve just released your EP ‘Conversation’ with lead single of the same name, what influenced the sound and songwriting for the EP as a whole and the single Conversation?

To be honest the biggest inspiration were my friends who I wrote and recorded the record with. The bulk of the EP was born actually playing within a group setting or one on one with an instrument and note pad in hand mostly, far away from a computer. A lot of the songs have a plethora  of live components to them which I’m also really proud of. Be that Paris being one whole vocal take, or Conversation having drums, bass and piano recorded simultaneously and one whole take.

How did you go about writing the EP?

I wrote it between my co-writer Charlotte Freud’s house and my producer Pete Hutchings house. The whole process happened really naturally and stemmed from a place of jamming and hanging out opposed to the typical session studio environment.

What does the EP mean to you?

Well, it means enough that I got ‘Conversation’ tattooed on my arm at 4am by some random guy in the back room of a club when I was drunk on Halloween 2019. It’s really a story of my life during the happiest and saddest I’ve ever been. But mostly it’s the time I spent making it with my friends that means the most to me, a lot more than the actual sentiment of the songs if I’m honest.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and how did you approach the process?

We mainly recorded it between my producers living room and RAK Studio 3 in St. Johns Wood. Again, it was just  a lot of playing these songs live and recording what we came up with, just having fun. I guess I didn’t really approach it in any definitive way because I didn’t feel like work or like we had to force art. Everything just happened the way it was meant too.

Who did you work with during the creation of the EP?

Most of the lyrics and melody I either wrote on my own or with my co-writer Charlotte Freud, and again she’s my best friend so it didn’t really feel like work. Other than that, my producer Pete Hutchings who’s worked with Adele, Royal Blood and Lady Gaga. My drummer Chris Mass who’s Mumford & Sons’ drummer. Kieran Jones who plays bass for Dermot Kennedy and is now my co-producer on the record I’m working on now. And a few other amazing friends who I was lucky enough to get into the studio.

What did you find most challenging and rewarding?

There wasn’t really anything I found challenging, it all felt really rewarding! I was working in cafes and bars while I recorded the whole thing, so just being able to be in the studio was the part that was most special. Doing what I love with people I love.

You co-directed each of the music video’s for each single, please tell us about this process:

I managed to be mentored by my good friend Liam Clarke while I was in Sydney last year, and he basically taught me everything I know about direction. He co-directed the first two music videos with me and my childhood best mate Em Meades. It was definitely a learning curve, especially doing everything on film. But when I came back to London and came up with the concept of Vinnie Vegas the sad clown, I took everything Liam showed me and put it to work to create the Conversation music video. That song and video are the two things I’m most proud of that I’ve created thus far.

Where and when did you film?

The ‘Conversation’ video was basically all shot in central London near where I live. They say shoot what you know so we used a lot of locations that I walk past every day.

How did the concepts for the music video’s come about?

Each concept came about very differently. ‘Told you’ stemmed from the lyric “emptying the clouds’, ‘Broke & Criminal’ was a reference to ‘Natural Born Killers’, and ‘Conversation’ I was just really tired of taking myself too seriously so I wanted to do something really silly. And I wanted to do something with my dog who sadly passed away a few weeks after we finished filming. So now the song and video have a whole new meaning to me.

You were signed at just 17 in Australia before parting ways and moving halfway across the world to London where you’re now based, how was the initial transition and how are you finding living in London now?

The transition wasn’t too jarring actually! I initially got signed in America so all the time I spent between LA and New York prepared me for living overseas. I love London, it’s my favourite place in the world. Every day I wake up feeling blessed that I’m able to live here.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Mostly Tyler, the Creator and Jeff Buckley. I’ve been listening to Childish Gambino’s record that came out in 2020 a lot, it’s amazing. I just discovered Maggie Rogers and her album ‘Notes from the Archive’ is incredible. Carol King is on a never-ending cycle of repeat and a lot of Tribe Called Quest. I’m currently listening to Brockhampton’s new album while writing this and it is really great.

What do you like to do away from music?

I own a clothing label with my sister. It’s a sustainable women’s label and that’s been our little lockdown baby, it’s a really fun way of being creative that I hadn’t explored before. It’s called Cielo Studios, check it if you want to look cool and save the planet while doing it.

What’s planned for 2021?

More music! I wanna put out an 8-song mixtape and drop a video for each song, so between that and Cielo Studios I’m gonna be pretty busy! Hopefully fit some live shows whenever we are allowed to.

Following a sold out headline tour and the group’s own curated festival, The Lazy Eyes today unveil their latest offering, the bubbly jaunt, ‘Nobody Taught Me‘. Listen + watch HERE.

The Lazy Eyes continue to dig deeper on ‘Nobody Taught Me‘, capturing that pure delight that comes from homecoming – retracing memories with new steps, returning to a place of connection, and rewatching home videos. Inspired by band member Harvey’s trips to visit his grandparents in England and his time spent over there, ‘Nobody Taught Me‘ recalls Penny Lane’s ‘barber showing photographs’. A leisurely side step compared to its predecessor ‘Where’s My Brain?‘, with this new single The Lazy Eyes continue to prove their position in psych rock’s new vanguard, demonstrating new depths to their iteration, sans pastiche or revivalism.

Harvey explains, “When I was younger, I would visit my grandparents who live in England every few years. On this one trip, I became friends with the kids who lived on my grandparents street. We would meet up everyday and do things that kids do like run around, have a hit with a tennis ball, play hide and seek, you know. Then the next time I went to England, I was so excited to catch up and play with them again only to find out that they had all left and moved houses. It was pretty sad but I still had a nice trip hanging out with my grandparents (who cameo in the music video) haha. ‘Nobody Taught Me’ encapsulates the good and the sad times experienced in England, from the excitement of playing on the street to the heartbreak of being left alone.”

Already reaching new heights after a breakthrough 2020, ‘Where’s My Brain?‘ saw The Lazy Eyes sell out their debut headline tour and inaugural all ages festival, Lazyfest which garnered rave reviews from the Sydney Morning Herald, Life Without Andy and punters alike. The single went on to receive praise from V Man, NME, KCRW, Alt Citizen, FBi Radio, Double J and Unearthed, Spin, Dublab, Northern Transmissions and more. Now with EP2 on the horizon, and what under traditional circumstances would have been a period of international showcases for the band, between appearances at a would-be SXSW, The Great Escape and Splendour In The Grass. Instead, the band regrouped to Lindfield Studios, revitalised and focused on bringing more recordings to life with their new lineup.

The Lazy Eyes are Harvey Geraghty (vocals, guitar, keyboard), Itay Shachar (vocals, guitar), Leon Karagic (bass) and Noah Martin (drums). At 15 years old, they met at a performing arts high school which provided fertile ground to pursue their creative endeavours. In the time since, the group have built a cult following with their magnetic live set. Long before their debut single, word of them spread like wildfire. This eventually reached the BBC’s Abbie McCarthy who aired the then unreleased ‘Cheesy Love Song‘ during a takeover on Australia’s national youth broadcaster, triple j. In the year that followed, their debut EP saw The Lazy Eyes sell out headline shows, amass a combined 1.5 million streams and receive praise from Apple Music’s Matt Wilkinson, Bandcamp, Atwood Magazine, American Songwriter, Monster Children, land at #17 on triple j Unearthed’s Top 50 Most Played Artists of 2020 and many more. If their position in the coveted NME 100 for 2021 is any indication for the year ahead, The Lazy Eyes promise to hold nothing back.

‘Nobody Taught Me‘ is out now, buy/stream it here.

BABE RAINBOW SHARE NEW SINGLE ‘READY FOR TOMORROW’ ?

? NEW ALBUM ‘CHANGING COLOURS’ OUT NEXT FRIDAY, MAY 14TH

Babe Rainbow are making music vividly respectful of the past, whilst emphatically living in the present; a confluence of sounds and sentiments from a place between yesterday and tomorrow.

Sharing the euphoric Jaden Smith collab ‘Your Imagination’ back in March, ‘Ready For Tomorrow’ is the prophetic new single, both taken from new album Changing Colours released next week on 14th May through Flightless Records.

‘Ready for Tomorrow’ is a contradiction of singer Angus Dowling’s disco flavour up the front and Cool Breeze folk picking guitar style as its anchor. It finds the band celebrating, but in a mood. He says, “it’s about 21st-century life, finding relief from the stress of both the future and the past. It is about Persephone running into her mother Demeters comforting arms”.

Keeping it theirs and local, ‘Ready for Tomorrow’ is accompanied by a video shot by band confidante and former bass player Jordan Malane, around the local village watering hole, the Eltham Hotel.

LISTEN HERE.

WATCH HERE.

The song was first born in the Topanga Canyon studio of producer Kyle Mudlark, and then finished with producer Wayne Connolly in the familiar surrounds of Music Farm Studios, in the Byron hinterland. Between those ends of the rainbow, the band has found a plot of land very much of their own.

Babe Rainbow have consolidated all that’s wonderful about their previous music, and pushed further in each direction on new album Changing Colours. A band that casually and organically celebrated the past whilst growing into their own original sound. A fold in a mythical road map between California and Byron Bay; compressing time, like a needle skipping over the past half-century of music.

Changing Colours is out next Friday, 14th May.

Today, Mndsgn shares ‘Medium Rare‘ from his forthcoming album Rare Pleasure, out June 4th on Stones Throw Records. The new track, with its evocative instrumentation and intricately crafted atmosphere, is cinematic in scope and perfectly captures the weight of the existential questions his lyrics ask. ‘Medium Rare’ follows the celestial and hypnotic ‘Slowdance‘ which came with an Eric Coleman-directed visual conceptualized by Mndsgn himself, as well as previously-released single ‘Hope You’re Doin’ Better‘ which came alongside a self-directed video.

Rare Pleasure is Mndsgn’s third album to be released on Stones Throw Records. Following 2016’s Body Wash, this album truly shows the artist’s evolution from his roots as a heralded beatmaker to vocalist, songwriter and arranger. Though he began writing for the album in 2018, the final recordings took just a week in studio with the help of trusted collaborators: Swarvy on bass, guitar and as Musical Director for the sessions, Stones Throw label mate Kiefer Shackelford on keys, drum work by Will Logan, the blessed percussion of Carlos Niño, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson on strings, and accompanying vocals from Fousheé and Anna Wise.

Inspired by soundtrack music, samba, exotica and ’70s/’80s library records, Rare Pleasure is intensely intimate, sourcing lyrics from Mndsgn’s family and interpersonal experiences, and reflective of the world at large. Despite the tenderness of the recordings, the music is joyfully vibrant and draws on Mndsgn’s formative experiences as a b-boy, showcasing a range of rhythms that will make you want to groove. The album is available to pre-order on vinyl now and will begin shipping out on May 7th, allowing fans to listen to the album ahead of the June 4th release date. “One of the best in Aus right now”

Hot off their breakout collaboration ‘Sunday Roast’, two of Australia’s fastest-rising artists, Nerve & JK-47 connect once more on ‘One In A Million’. Listen HERE.

Since first collaborating, the two have worked tirelessly to hone their individual crafts while dominating the local scene. This new release is a slice of hyperactive bravado that sees the two rapidly trade verses over bombastic production, proving that their talents really are ‘One In A Million’. Together, Nerve and JK-47 deliver a downright anthemic call to calls – believe and you too shall prosper. ‘One In A Million’ Nerve reveals is a song “made for anyone that’s wary of stepping outside the box and questioning the systems that they find themselves living in. Everyone can be one in a million at something – you just need to find your thing and put your heart and soul into it.”

Reflecting on the inspiration, he continues “I knew people would expect a lot from JK and myself with anything we put out, given our previous releases. I wanted to create something uplifting and energetic but also allow space for us to touch on real issues that we resonate with socially and politically – all while making a tune that will slap at a festival and blow the trunk out of a Nissan skyline.”

After dominating Australia’s underground rap/grime scenes, performing at festivals nationwide, and collaborating with international heavy-hitters like Aitch; Meanjin/Brisbane talent Nerve will release his Tall Poppy Season EP on May 21. Including the previously released ‘Missed Calls’, praised by triple j, NME, RAGE, Acclaim, and more and recent hit ‘Migraines’, Nerve bridges his preference for assertive bars with his ear for infectious pop melodies into his most accomplished and versatile effort yet. Tall Poppy Season flexes his production chops with beats that bring you from the club to the bedroom, while lyrically touching on his vulnerability and uncertainty as a young artist.

Nerve final words are delivered with a sense of motivation. “This is for anyone that is hesitant to be seen as a tall poppy and achieve their goals and dreams,” Nerve says. “Don’t let anyone try and cut you down to size. You will always grow back twice as high.”

‘One In A Million’ ft. JK-47 is out now, buy/stream it here.

EMERSON SNOWE ANNOUNCES EMERSON SNOWE’S SPLATTERPUNK EP FOR JUNE 23 + RELEASES NEW SONG ‘YOU’RE MY BOY, BABY!’

by the partae May 5, 2021
written by the partae
Following on from the release of ‘Frankenstein’ in Feb, Brisbane-via-Berlin singer-songwriter and all-round creative Emerson Snowe unveils his new single ‘You’re My Boy, Baby!’ and shares details of his new EP Emerson Snowe’s Splatterpunk. The five-track EP is confirmed for release on June 23.

Like all of the songs on the EP, ‘You’re My Boy, Baby!’ was self-written and self-produced, and mixed by Nicolas Vernhes (War On Drugs, Spoon, Deerhunter, Animal Collective). Emerson Snowe (aka Jarrod Mahon) was also behind the striking cover artwork. Despite the sunny, upbeat mood of the new song, the lyrics touch on sensitive material, reflecting on the end of a long-term relationship:

“I had just come out of a relationship a few days leading up to a small two week UK tour at the end of 2018. My ex-partner wanted to break it off, and I accepted it. I figured if that’s what they wanted, then there was no use in trying to change someone’s frame of mind when that has already made its way into it. Maybe that wasn’t the best way to go about it from my side, but mentally at that time I was already so exhausted because of other issues in my life. So the song is pretty literal, probably the most literal story there is from me at this point. The lyrics read like a private text message. Its about wanting the best for a partner, even though it didn’t work out with them, there is no doubt how significant they were in my life.”

WATCH: ‘You’re My Boy, Baby!’ by Emerson Snowe
‘You’re My Boy, Baby!’ lands with a self-directed video that was filmed during a dream trip to Japan in 2019, and sees the artist dancing his way through crowded city streets.
“Tokyo and Japanese culture has always been something I’ve been hugely inspired by. The horror movies in particular are so influential to me that I knew we had to shoot there. The people are the kindest and the art, fashion and music is second to none. The people are so appreciative of art, it reminds me of the feeling I had when I first started writing and playing shows. I got a chance to finally go to Tokyo to play a show at the end of 2019, we shot this video going through the streets. It has always been a massive dream of mine, it truly is a whole experience just being there – I have nothing but love for it.”
Emerson Snowe’s previous single ‘Frankenstein’ won praise from global sites including Under The Radar, DIY, Clash, So Young, Riot Magazine and NME, plus received multiple spins at BBC Radio 1 from Jack Saunders and at Apple 1 from Hamuman Welch. ‘Frankenstein’ also received over 100 plays across radio stations in Germany, Switzerland and Italy, in addition to airplay at triple j and community radio locally.

Emerson Snowe’s Splatterpunk will be the artist’s second EP release, following on from debut, That’s Rock ‘n’ Roll. From Brisbane originally, Emerson Snowe has toured with King Krule and GUM, and spent the last few years overseas, immersing himself into wider music, fashion and creative circles. He performed debut shows in Tokyo and LA, and also appeared at SXSW and The Great Escape. Currently based in Berlin, he walked the runway at Men’s Fashion Week in Paris 2020 for Geoffery B Small and is now represented in the region. He has continued to dance further in the fashion landscape globally, with coveted labels Gucci and Fendi also utilising his music in recent campaigns.

Emerson Snowe’s Splatterpunk EP will be released on June 23 by Liberation Records for the world, with the exception of Europe, where Berlin-based indie Duchess Box Records have the honours.

ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM

9TH & WALNUT
FEATURING ORIGINAL LINE-UP
OUT JULY 23

Today, legendary punk band Descendents announce their upcoming album 9th & Walnut due out July 23 via Epitaph Records. Recorded in 2002, the original four-piece lineup — bassist Tony Lombardo, drummer Bill Stevenson, guitarist Frank Navetta (d. 2008), and vocalist Milo Aukerman — entered the studio to finally record the songs with which they first forged their genre-defining sound.

Named for their Long Beach practice space back in the day, the 18-track collection features the bands’ earliest material written from 1977 through 1980. The collection also includes Descendents’ debut tracks “Ride the Wild” & ”It’s a Hectic World” (heard here for the first time with vocals by Milo), and the Dave Clark Five’s “Glad All Over” with the full Descendents treatment.

The band offers the first glimpse of 9th & Walnut with “Baby Doncha Know.” “’Baby Doncha Know’ was maybe the 5th song we learned,” recalls drummer Bill Stevenson. “We would go out to 9th & Walnut every weekend and practice all day. I mainly just remember being in awe of how ‘a kid my age, who goes to my high school’ could have written all these cool songs. Frank seemed to have a maturity beyond his years. I never asked him who or what it was about. I was just happy to be there with him and Tony”

Madi Diaz Releases New Single/Video 'Nervous'

Madi Diaz Releases New Single/Video ‘Nervous’

by the partae May 5, 2021
written by the partae

‘Nervous’ video still by Jordan Bellamy

“An artist new to me that I hope you love.” – Bob Boilen, NPR Music

“[‘New Person, Old Place’ is] genuinely profound.” – The Guardian

“[‘New Person, Old Place’ is] half kiss-off, half facing-the-future resolution – and all uplifting inspiration.” – The Sunday Times

“[‘New Person, Old Place’ is] gorgeously folksy.” – Brooklyn Vegan

Today, Nashville-based songwriter Madi Diaz releases “Nervous,” a new single about recognising unhealthy coping mechanisms. “Nervous,” her third single for ANTI-, follows the evocative “New Person, Old Place” and “Man In Me,” and further presents Diaz’s ability to write direct and introspective music, a craft she’s spent years refining. The song’s frank lyrics are bellied by infectious guitar and Diaz’s buoyant voice: “I know why I lie to myself // I’m not really looking to get healthy // I have so many perspectives I’m losing perspective I make me nervous.” The accompanying video was shot in Nashville and directed by Jordan Bellamy. It was inspired by and includes an homage to the final scene of Andrei Tarkovsky’s film The Stalker, a film that has always resonated with Diaz through its otherworldly nature, as well as its thoughtful and often anxiety inducing pace.

“You know when you hold a mirror up to a mirror and you get an infinite amount of reflections from every angle? That’s what ‘Nervous’ is about,” says Diaz. “It’s when you’re in a loop of looking at yourself from every vantage point until you’re caught up in your own tangled web of bullshit. It’s about catching yourself acting out your crazy and you’re finally self aware enough to see it, but you’re still out of your body enough and curious enough to watch yourself do it.”

Charlotte Rosse

Where are you currently based?

Currently in Monaco. Home will always be London where I hope to go back once vaccinated.

What have you been up to recently?

I have been working on the acoustic version of “Raise a Toast” and the video. Plus recording vocals for my upcoming acoustic EP.

How did you first start playing music?

I started singing before I could walk 🙂

Your new single ‘Raise A Toast’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

The biggest influence on the melody and the over-the-top drama of the lyrics has been the music of an Italian icon, Mina Mazzini. She has a dramatic voice similar to mine and I take a lot of inspiration from her music of the ’60s and ’70s. Apart from that lyrically I love Lana Del Rey and the vintage glamour which I try to convey in my songs.

When writing this song I thought that it’s message has a lot of similarities to “All By Myself” by Eric Carmen, famously sung by my favorite 90’s diva Celine Dion. As his song was based on a part of a Rachmaninov’s piano concerto I thought it would be cool to add the actual Rachmaninov recording at the beginning of the track played from vinyl! It also underlines the huge influence of classical music in my creative process.

You co-wrote Raise A Toast with Arrow Benjamin (Beyonce, Alicia Keys), how did this collaboration come about and how was the experience as a whole?

Arrow was introduced to me by an acquaintance of my boyfriend. It was a total coincidence that our paths crossed. We met a few times and decided to give it a shot and work on some music together. I was very excited about the opportunity to work with him as he is incredibly skilled with words. As a young songwriter I can learn a lot from people like Arrow.

Once we started working we understood we are both alfa personalities so there were a lot of fiery discussions, long late-night phone calls, and different visions but in the end, we both found a middle ground and consider the song “our baby”.

Where and when did you record the track and who did you work with?

I recorded the track in the summer of 2020 with some difficulties due to the COVID restrictions. It was recorded in a recording studio in Nice, France.

You’re operatically trained, how does this influence your music and live performance?

I’ve been trained in Speech Level Singing technique since I was 16. This technique built the grounds for me as a vocalist. The biggests benefits I got from my classical training were mainly the development of my musical horizons and knowledge, the expansion of my vocal range, and the experience of singing some of the most difficult pieces of music written for voice, which now gives me an incredible confidence and ease while singing pop music. Not to mention the discipline you have to develop when you study for an Opera Degree, which involves acting, music theory, fencing, ballet and more. All this is very helpful for live performances.

How did the concept for the music video come about?

When shooting the video we were in a lockdown and I decided to take things into my own hands rather than wait for the reopening. I ordered a big Pavlova cake at a patisserie in Monaco, bought a ton of macaroons, and asked my close friend, who is a famous fashion designer in Poland, to lend me some fancy gowns. When writing this song I already had a vision of a Hollywood siren who has it all, dancing by herself to the music in her hotel room, drinking way too much, watching TV at night, and eating fast food. The idea of a modern Marie Antonette mixed with Marylin Monroe. Shooting it was hard work but also sooo much fun. And I got totally tipsy on all the champagne! But seriously, I think the video is such a good contrast to the song, as you can see my joyful side. I wanted it to feel more personal therefore we edited it in an 8mm camera style.

Where and when did you film?

Considering that the music video was shot in January 2021 when we were in full lockdown everything had to be done very simplistically with just me as the director, stylist, makeup artist except for the cameraman. It was filmed in a hotel in Monaco.

What did you find most challenging and rewarding during the creation of the music video?

I guess the biggest challenge was to take care of all the styling, makeup, and hairstyling. It was a lot of work considering I had 5 different looks. I loved that I had total creative control and it was simply fun.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

I have a very broad spectrum of music I listen to but currently one of my favs is Snoh Aalegra. I’m also in love with the 90’s vibes of the new releases from Bruno Mars.

What do you like to do away from music?

A passion that has definitely helped throughout my teenage years and something I care about a lot is the transformative power of makeup. Together with fashion, makeup has always been my armour and has given me the freedom to choose who I want to be. Every day I choose a different look that makes me feel empowered and brave.

What do you have planned for the rest of 2021?

In June I’m going to release an acoustic EP which has been fun to record as we’ve done it with a great live string quartet. Then I’m hoping to travel and hang out on the beach for the whole of June, July, and August. I’m also gonna have my mini studio set up with me and do remote songwriting sessions with my team. Once September arrives I hope to go back to London and work on my original material there.

Favourite food and place to hang out?

Favorite food? Probably Cipriani’s famous meringue cake. I have a horrible sweet tooth.

My favorite place to hang out is George Members Club in Mayfair, London. It feels like home and the staff there are like family to me!
