Field Medic releases “Let Freedom Ring 2,” shares tour dates with The Neighbourhood & Health

by the partae April 7, 2018
written by the partae

Today, Field Medic has released shared a new song titled “Let Freedom Ring 2.” Written in the wake of the white nationalist marches in Charlottesville and the events that unfolded in their aftermath, “Let Freedom Ring 2” reflects on the emboldening of open hatred in today’s social conversation.  “The fact that white nationalists felt energized and justified in spreading hatred, and the president not even condemning them…” says Kevin Patrick who performs as Field Medic.  “It’s scary to think about the increasingly bitter divisions between people in our country.”
“Let Freedom Ring 2” pays homage to the timeless folk songs of Bob Dylan and Woody Guthrie with its long-strummed chords and focused, repetitive rhyming.  More stripped back than most Field Medic tracks with only guitar, a bit of tape hiss and loud vocals, the song’s message is front and center like so many of the issues affecting our lives on a daily basis.
All proceeds from sales and streams of “Let Freedom Ring 2” will be donated to the Southern Poverty Law Center.
Additionally, Field Medic has announced a summer tour that includes dates with The Neighbourhood and Health.

ABOUT FIELD MEDIC:
Field Medic is the lo-fi folk project of Kevin Patrick. His first release on Run For Cover Records, Songs From the Sunroom, compiles material he’s recorded and released over two years from a small sunroom in San Francisco which doubled as his bedroom. At eighteen, Patrick discovered the music of Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan, who changed his perspective on what a song could be and led to him developing his own style which he describes as “freak folk/post country with an emphasis on finger style guitar and lyrics.”
Patrick initially embraced lo-fi because he felt that his home recordings were a truer method of expressing what he was creating than anything he could do in a studio. Drawing inspiration from new wave and rap, Patrick pushed the boundaries of what a folk song could be, incorporating new elements in each subsequent release from analogue drum machines to Casio keyboards to banjo.  The immediacy of that recording process and the freedom of experimentation inherent within are central to Field Medic’s character, extending through his music to his freestyle, improvised mixtapes and his poetry.
The tracks on Songs From the Sunroom were recorded during a heightened creative period and released as an almost non-stop flurry of EPs, albums, and singles, all of which have been shared via Bandcamp since 2014.  As Field Medic, Patrick has released every song he has ever recorded, a conscious decision summed up in his philosophy that “all expression is valid”.   “I don’t believe in perfection, I learned that perfect wasn’t real” he explains, continuing “To me [the tracks on SFtS] aren’t demos, they’re the finished songs because no one was waiting on any other versions, so why would I?”
This past January, Patrick gave up his sunroom in San Francisco to travel around the country playing music. Along the way he has joined up with acts such as Pinegrove and The Neighborhood as well as appearing at Outside Lands 2017. The coming year will find Field Medic recording his debut full-length for Run For Cover Records and touring heavily.

JAALA shares new single ‘Sames’

by the partae April 7, 2018
written by the partae

Today, Jaala reveals a new offering ‘Sames‘ from her forthcoming record Joonya Spirit out Friday 20th April via Bedroom Suck Recordings / Remote Control Records.

Lead singer and guitar Cosima describes the track which premiered on Triple R’s Breaking And Entering yesterday “It’s a song written from the perspective of Pikachu who, to quote HTMLflowers, wants to ‘go full Raichu’. Replace the word ‘sames’ with ‘caterpillar’ and you’re getting pretty close.”

Through your ears, deep in your mind, down in your heart, in a way you never knew you wanted, Jaalawill caress you and Jaala will entice you. Like the roots of a tree Jaala is ever growing, pruned only by themselves and never by the expectations of the public.

In 2015, Jaala released their debut album Hard Hold running out of the gate and to the top of most critics ‘Best Of’ lists including a nod for AMP Album Of The Year, feature record on triple j, Album Of The Week on RRR, FBi Radio, RTR and SYN FM and clocking rave reviews on Pitchfork, FADER and NPRabroad.

Since the release of Hard Hold they have transformed into a completely new animal, stylistically and literally. The addition of Carolyn Schofield (synth) of Fia Fiell fame has moved the band towards a more haunting, dreamy experimental pop movement as opposed to the guitar shredding melt your face prog rock vibes of yesteryear.

Vocalist/guitarist Cosima pay and drummer/genius Maria Moles stand firm with their intricately woven telepathy. The ornate and ever flowing creativity is still ubiquitous, only it feels different now, rather than falling down a beautiful waterfall into a pit of demons that become your mates it’s more like your feet have been confiscated at the same time as you’ve been given the ability to fly.

Keep your ears peeled for April 2018 when their new album Joonya Spirit is unleashed upon the world in all it’s untouchable glory.

Set Mo Enlist Asta On Seductive New Track ‘Near’ | Stream

by the partae April 7, 2018
written by the partae

Sydney’s dynamic production duo Set Mo (Stu Turner & Nick Drabble) today unveil their seductive new offering “Near”, featuring the unadulterated vocals of Hobart’s vibrant songstress Asta. Following their latest invigorator “Unity”, “Near” is the third track to be released in their prolific eleven-track output planned for 2018 – released monthly via Set Mo Records.

A return to form from the pair’s previous 90s club inspired “Unity”, “Near” bursts with vitality showcasing Set Mo’s undeniable flair for delivering impeccably produced feel-good house grooves, brought further to life with the sultry and formidable vocals of Asta. Written three years earlier, the boys struggled to find the perfect co-writer/vocalist to collaborate with, before being blown away by Asta who shook things to a new level.

“The original piece of music, before there were any lyrics, we gave the working title of Near as the track had a warm, comforting feel to it. When we got in the studio with Asta we explored this concept and the broader idea of feeling someone’s presence and aura. This is when the song Near truly came to life. Asta has an amazing voice and we love the more laidback seductive feel in the verses contrasting with the lift in energy and power in the chorus,” explains Set Mo.

“Near” builds on the momentum set by last month’s “Unity” which was added to Sydney’s FBi Radio and Spotify’s Fresh Electronic playlist with over 1.6 million followers, alongside February’s adrenaline-inducing single “Nightmares” (featuring Scott Quinn) and marks the quarter-way point in their relentless 11 track release plan over 11 consecutive months. Focusing heavily on writing and recording throughout 2017, Nick and Stu hit studios in London, Amsterdam and Berlin, and are now excited to share the abundance of new music.

Tove Styrke, new single “On The Low” / album May 4, Katy Perry Tour

by the partae April 7, 2018
written by the partae

(New York, NY – April 6, 2018) Swedish recording artist Tove Styrke has released a brand new single titled “On The Low.” Listen to the song everywhere now here.

The single is a fresh taste of Styrke’s forthcoming new album, Sway, slated for a May 4 release via Sony Music Sweden/RCA Records.

Of “On The Low,” Styrke describes, “If ‘Sway’ is a body of work, ‘On The Low’ is like the heart. It’s the smallest song in terms of how it sounds but in another way it’s the biggest. It’s just a straight up love song, but what else do you really need.”

Describing the forthcoming album, Styrke details, “I’m very excited to announce my albumSway. It’s been the best kind of fun, wake-up-and-wonder-why-you-even-do-this kind of scary, incredibly interesting (it may sound like I’m exaggerating here but this music has been my life for the past 1.5 years) and I’m really proud of how it’s turned out. A lot of these are feelings I thought I’d take with me to the grave but hey, I put them on an album instead! Fun! Hopefully people can relate.”

After a well-deserved ‘Pop Artist of the Year’ win at Sweden’s prestigious national radio P3 Guld Awards this January, Tove Styrke joined Lorde on her spring U.S. arena tour after releasing a stunning cover of Lorde’s Melodrama single “Liability.” Lorde invited Styrke on stage for a special duet of Robyn’s “Hang With Me” on the last night in St. Paul, MN — see here.

After a run of her first-ever Australian shows, Styrke will join Katy Perry as direct support on a European run set to kick off May 23 in Cologne. See the full tour date listing below. Tickets are on sale now HERE.

New Sway single “Changed My Mind” released earlier this spring attracting praise from outlets such as TIME who observe Styrke “cleverly marking out her own pop territory,” while The Guardian called it “another deceptively casual banger.” Previous single “Mistakes” has seen widespread acclaim sparking Idolator to call it, “minimal electro-pop with maximum impact”and Entertainment Weekly further proclaiming, “Styrke is making some of the most interesting and daring pop songs of 2017.” The track has received 11 million Spotify streams and was released alongside a stunning video of which Styrke explained to The FADER, “The song is about embracing your wrongs, letting go of yourself and not be perfect. The bride to me is a nice image of ‘perfection’ and it was fun to put a twist on that…it’s more like she’s running back to herself rather than running away.” Shawn Mendes is also “obsessed” with “Mistakes” naming it one of his favorite tracks of 2017 in an interview with NME.

Prior to “Mistakes,” Styrke’s spring 2017 single “Say My Name” saw critical praise sparkingRolling Stone to grant it the #11 spot on their ‘Top Songs of 2017’ list as well as nods from the likes of Sam Smith, Clean Bandit, and Lena Dunham. The track has over 15 million Spotify streams and was Tove’s first single since her 2015 U.S. debut Kiddo. “Say My Name” has garnered significant buzz, reaching #11 on Spotify’s US Viral 50 chart and #12 on the Global Viral 50 chart. Additionally, the track hit #1 on Hype Machine and has received stellar press coverage with outlets such as Pigeons and Planes coining it “a summer hit” and Noisey calling it “the best song ever made by a person.”

A platinum selling and Grammy nominated artist in her native Sweden, Tove Styrke has been on a fast rise since the release of Kiddo, bolstered by striking lead single, “Borderline,” as well as strong follow-ups, “Ego” and “Number One.” The album paved the way for a full North American headline tour, SXSW appearances, a performance on Late Night with Seth Meyers and widespread critical acclaim. As Pigeons and Planes exclaimed, “Tove carries herself in a way that makes it impossible not to smile throughout the show. She’s fun, a little weird (in a good way—think MØ, Grimes, Björk), and totally captivating.” Noisey added, “The Swedish singer is coming back louder than ever,” and NYLON called her “one of the country’s biggest up-and-coming singer-songwriters.” Tove Styrke first landed a record deal with Sony Sweden in her late teens, which led to the 2010 release of her debut album, Tove Styrke. Since the release of Kiddo, Styrke has stayed busy in the studio as well as touring with Years & Years and a UK television performance on Top of the Pops with Alan Walker.

Kitty Crimes Drops Debut Album: A “Nasty Introspective-Sexual Vibe to Hip-Hop & R&B”

by the partae April 5, 2018
written by the partae

Listen to Kitty Crimes’ Crimes of the Kitty: Volume Two

SPOTIFY | SOUNDCLOUD | WEBSITE | YOUTUBE

Denver, Colorado female hip-hop artist Kitty Crimes released her long-awaited debut album “Crimes of the Kitty: Volume 2” delivering a nasty introspective-sexual vibe to hip-hop and R&B music. Three years in the making, Denver Post calls it “an eight-track drizzle of hip-hop and pop that’s unlike anything else you’ll hear come out of Denver this year.”
With an underlying theme of power, this album provides something for everyone. From Two Tens (track 4, music video here), “in all of its queer, stunting glory, is a sub-shaking banger.” to Two Weeks, (track 8) – personally, I either want to slo-mo dance in a penthouse with strobe lights, or make sweet love. And that’s exactly what she was trying to accomplish. And for those listening really closely, yes, that is Nathaniel Rateliff’s sultry baritone on Magic.
Maria Kohler of Kitty Crimes stands out amongst the crowd as a radical feminist and queer rapper, who alludes to breaking the rules of how feminine is perceived and received. Maria’s journey as a queer rapper and performer in the industry and her ability to relate her music to everyone is the reason why she’s taking her talents national through this album release and upcoming move from Denver to LA. Within the music itself and her live performances, she wants to create a space for others to also dive into what is uncomfortable.
“If you look at the collection as a whole, I’m exploring infatuation, heartbreak, confidence, and progress,” says Maria Kohler of Kitty Crimes. “This album is largely a timeline of who I was and who I’ve become, with a strong underlying theme of power. It’s a reflection of how I’ve stepped into my own sense of personal power, or how I’ve given it away.”
Kitty Crimes is most noted for her flagrant performances with explorations into rap and pop expressions. She recently headlined Treefort Music Fest, and is set to release her album at Hi-Dive in Denver, Colorado on April 5.

Hatchie shares “Sugar & Spice,” title track from debut EP out 5/25 via Double Double Whammy

by the partae April 5, 2018
written by the partae

Australian artist-on-the-rise, Hatchie has released a video for the title track from her anticipated debut EP, Sugar & Spice. Stereogum, who premiered the Joe Agius directed video today is saying it’s “a perfect radio-friendly indie-pop song – if radio stations were still playing perfect indie-pop songs like this – it matches its spangly guitar shimmer with vocal harmonies that sound almost like the late Dolores O’Riordan at her sweetest.”
Harriette Pilbeam, aka Hatchie, says: “Joe and I spent about an hour filming with the guys and two days drawing for the video. It’s such a fun short song, so we wanted something simple and colourful, and less serious than our previous videos. Joe came up with the concept and we took inspiration from our old school scrapbooks.”
Hatchie made a splash last year with the song “Try,” which NPR called “hazy and misty, but with pop-rooted forward momentum.” She followed that up with “Sure,” which The FADER hailed as “transfixing and genuinely catchy – like, turn-of-the-century radio pop catchy” and Brooklyn Vegancalled “one part ’90s shoegaze and one part straight-ahead pop.”

Deezie Brown Drops His Debut Album “Judith”

by the partae April 5, 2018
written by the partae

Austin, Texas artist, Deezie Brown released his long-awaited debut album “Judith,” a 12-track body of work delivering a very edgy and rebellious depiction of alternative hip-hop and contemporary music. Banger of the Day called the album “an absolute masterpiece…one the most thought-provoking, fresh minded, musical talents that we have heard in Hip Hop in a minute.”

In 2017, Deezie Brown released four singles leading up to the release of his album. Standout records like I Fell In Love in a two Seater, A-V-entador to the Hills, and his most recent single, Sheepskin / Shayne has captivated audience’s attention leading up to this moment of his first album release.

“The album is basically a love story between me and the industry. Throughout the album I go into detail on the ups and downs of our journey and how my love is unconditional with someone that I’ve never even met,” stated Deezie Brown when asked what inspired ‘Judith’. “The lyrics throughout the album paint a picture of my addictions and the things that the industry place in front of us as a disguise on what success is supposed to look like. Throughout the album, I’m trying to look past these vivid images but it definitely acts as my biggest weakness.”

Speed on the Beat said it best, “He’s like what you’d get if you took Jaden Smith, a smidge of K.R.I.T., a teeny bit of Kendrick, and Cudi in a dark room and told them to fight to the death until none were left and you scraped up the DNA samples and created a rapper out of them.”

Coming in at a little over 1 hour in streaming time, Judith keeps the same energy presented in past singles. The artwork for the album consists of unique acrylic painting from a local Austin artist.

Deezie Brown will be playing the #SXSBreaks Showcase on Friday, March 16 at Karma Lounge during SXSW.

THE PRESETS: NEW ALBUM HI VIZ SET FOR RELEASE MAY 18, NATIONAL TOUR ANNOUNCED

THE PRESETS

NEW ALBUM HI VIZ SET FOR

RELEASE MAY 18

PRE-ORDER HERE

ANNOUNCE HI-VIZ NATIONAL TOUR FOR JUNE 2018

Australian electronic dance pioneers THE PRESETS are back with a vengeance, announcing today that their long awaited fourth studio album HI VIZ is set for release on May 18 through EMI Music Australia, and will be followed by a national tour across June, taking in Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Canberra, Wollongong, Sydney, Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

Their return was heralded in spectacular fashion late last year with the first taste of new music from HI VIZ – the urgent “Do What You Want”, which featured in triple j’s Hottest 100 songs of 2017 and the sweeping “14U+14ME”, which is among the tastemaker station’s most played songs of 2018.  Most of the album has been mixed by John Hanes who created the classic mix of “Uptown Funk” as well as working more recently with the likes of Sia, Bruno Mars and Major Lazer.  Apocalypso collaborator Scott Horscroft also mixed several HI VIZ tracks while Flume engineer Eric J mixed “Beethoven” – the pair’s sly nod to their Conservatorium years.

“We wanted to make something that was literally meant to get you out of your head”, explains Julian Hamilton. “All the songs on HI VIZ are outward looking so in that respect it’s much more like our earlier stuff.  It’s about trying to capture that energy you get on a great night out with your friends when you get to leave everything else behind you for a while.  We essentially tried to create the soundtrack to a party that we would want to go nuts at.”

“It’s taken us ages to make this album because we just kept writing and recording more and more songs”, reflects Kim Moyes. “At one point we had about 50 contenders and, like us, they were all over the map mood wise. Eventually we decided – fuck it – let’s just pick the most ‘up for it’ songs. Those tracks are always the most fun for us to play live anyway so we thought ‘why not have a whole album of them?’”.

Both Julian and Kim individually produce other artists outside their Presets collaborations, so it’s not surprising that they, once again, are credited as Producers for their own album. It’s also apt that some of the artists with whom they’ve worked should make HI VIZcameos. For example, “Are You Here?” features indie rockers the DMA’s, whose latest release was co-produced by Kim. Similarly Alison Wonderland – for whom The Presets recently created a widely played remix – guested on the beaty “Are You Out Of Your Mind?” while Jake Shears from Scissor Sisters added vocals to the dark’n’steamy “Tools Down”.

It’s been a decade since The Presets first set festival fields alight with breakthrough anthems like “My People”, “Talk Like That” and “This Boys In Love”. The pair had been making waves in Sydney’s clubs since forming in 2003 and signing to the influential Modular Records, but it was their 2008 Oz chart topper, Apocalypso, that first introduced them to wider audiences. That album was certified triple platinum and won them six ARIA Awards in their homeland. By contrast, 2012’s critically acclaimed Pacifica was comparatively introspective but epic gigs around the world – from Glastonbury Festival and Coachella to Splendour In The Grass – forged the duo’s reputation as Australian electronic music trailblazers.

HI VIZ lands May 18 and the album is available for pre-order from today, visit: thepresets.com/preorder.

JACK LADDER & THE DREAMLANDERS release new single + announce The Killers support!

by the partae April 5, 2018
written by the partae
‘Feel Brand New’ is the third song taken from the forthcoming Jack Ladder & The Dreamlanders albumBlue Poles, out May 4 on Barely Dressed Records, and was premiered on Brooklyn Vegan today.

The track takes a different direction, both musically and thematically from previous single ‘White Flag‘. Instead he captures and celebrates the sweet disposition that love can make life’s problems seem insignificant. It’s Jack Ladder at his most playful and joyous.

“Every moment heaven sent / dream together, pay the rent /
And never seem to save a cent / Still, I feel brand new.”
“The bones of the song appeared on New Years Day after going to bed sober before midnight.” Ladder says. “That day my partner and I went for a short bush walk that turned into a 5 hour trek. I was feeling a new chapter turning over.”
“Another year up in smoke / moving on, not losing hope /
You’d think we’d hang ourselves with this much rope, but I feel brand new.”

MIDDLE KIDS REVEAL NEW SINGLE & VIDEO ‘ON MY KNEES’

by the partae April 5, 2018
written by the partae

Credit: Maclay Heriot

“Hannah’s voice is a little Stevie Nicks-ie and the jangly guitars sound like they’re lifted from an interstitial scene in Singles, but you know sometimes you hear a song and you just like it.”

– NOISEY

“Heartfelt, clever ruminations at the intersection of indie rock and alt-country”

– ROLLING STONE

“Led by the powerful vocals of Hannah Joy, the trio deal in infectious indie pop-rock.”

– SUNDAY TIMES CULTURE

Aussie trio Middle Kids will release their debut album Lost Friends next month, and today they share new single “On My Knees”. The band explain the track is “about rejecting the value system of the individual as the prime unit of society. It’s also about how suffering and disappointment can help change our perspective in a healthy way. When we stop focusing on ‘winning’ and can submit to something bigger, or to each other, we are better people.” Listen HERE.

On Lost Friends, Hannah Joy, Harry Day and Tim Fitz bring back their knack for haunting hooks, lyrical poignancy and irresistible indie rock appeal that critics praised in their self-titled first EP, released in February 2017. This radiant collection of new songs conjures melodic nostalgia for some of songwriting’s very best, rich in heartfelt build and beautiful simplicity.

Middle Kids made a powerful debut last year with the release of their internationally acclaimed self-titled EP, featuring singles “Edge of Town” and  “Your Love”. The band dazzled at several SXSW and The Great Escape showcases, made their U.S. television debut on Conan and supported legendary acts like Ryan Adams and The War On Drugs.

The new album, Lost Friends, is the kind of album that sucker-punches you in the gut, revealing its nuances only after repeated listens. The songs’ edges are jagged, the production clean, stray imperfections imbue warmth and a human touch. Middle Kids craft classic hooks and riffs that tangle up in your brain like licorice and choruses that linger long after the song has faded. And they’ve bonded over a greater sense of what their music should accomplish.

Lost Friends will be released on May 4th through EMI Music Australia and is available now to pre-order HERE on limited lilac coloured gatefold vinyl, gatefold CD, and digital download.

MOURN announce new album Sorpresa Familia + share first single ‘Barcelona City Tour’

by the partae April 5, 2018
written by the partae
Barcelona’s fledgling rockers MOURN have announced their third LP Sorpresa Familia, which will be released on Friday 15th June via Captured Tracks / Remote Control. Today they share their first single and video from the record, ‘Barcelona City Tour’, via NPR. The video was directed and edited by the band, and follows them as they explore and celebrate their Catalonian capital and hometown.

A note from MOURN about Sorpresa Familia:

We like to understand records as personal diaries. Everything you live builds you as a person, so we think it builds your art as well. We use songs as a way to express ourselves and to organize our ideas and thoughts. We use them to understand our own feelings and to grow emotionally. This album sums up everything we’ve lived during the past two years, it wasn’t easy to open up, but we did it anyway without fear. Every frustration, disappointment, delusion, anger… We got everything out, we liberated ourselves and now we’re ready for everything that comes up. The lyrics are very literal; they are our raw experiences–without makeup. We show our most animal side, reduced to our most intense and visceral emotions. Of all we’ve lived, we keep the experiences, what was learned, all the mistakes and successes. Now we know life is SORPRESA (surprise), but above all it is FAMILIA (family).

MOURN began when Jazz Rodríguez Bueno and Carla Perez started to release songs they had written as teens on Youtube; soon after, Antonio Postius and Jazz’s sister Leia Rodríguez joined, completing the quartet. They quickly signed to a Spanish label and, after signing to Brooklyn-based label Captured Tracks in 2014, broke onto the American music scene with their self-titled first LP. Although MOURN have only been making music for a short time (compared to the lengthy careers of many post-punk and rock stalwarts) they have since seen more than their fair share of bureaucratic troubles and music industry red tape. The momentum gained from their first LP came to a halt upon the release of their sophomore album,Ha, Ha, He!, due to legal issues with their now former Spanish label. In 2017, the group was finally relinquished from legal chaos and through Captured Tracks released an EP of covers titled Over the Wall — at last they were able to tour North America to perform songs from their entire catalogue for live audiences.

Rather than letting unfortunate circumstances discourage them, they channeled their angst and mistrials into the 12 original songs on Sorpresa Familia, citing themes such as mistreatment by toxic figures, letting go of the past, and being quite literally abandoned in a foreign city as touring teenagers. A bit older, and certainly grown into their talent even more than before, MOURN is prepared to once again captivate the attention of international critics and fans alike with Sorpresa Familia.
