Kay Proudlove delivers quirky video for ‘Giftcard’

by the partae December 20, 2018
written by the partae

With a remarkably agile, soul-bearing voice and a wry sense of humour, witty local indie-folk singer-songwriter Kay Proudlove has always written songs driven by narrative and powered by her love for the art of observation, ‘Giftcard’, is no different. Covering everything from the financial and social stresses of Santa’s impending visit, to the joy of witnessing pure human connection and of course, those thoughtful and not-so-thoughtful gifts – “surprise, it’s a gift card”, this track a song about the mixed feelings of the festive season that we can all relate to.

Enlisting director and editor Tim Winterflood, Kay and Tim worked together on concocting their quirky festive masterpiece with the hope of bringing Christmas cheer to those young and old – “I have Kay to thank for the video’s concept, her and I worked quite closely on it leading up to the shoot. My main focus was to keep it lighthearted and cheeky during the overlaid shots. In a way, we were lucky because the awkwardness kind of came naturally because we were mostly filming in public places with plenty of bystanders milling around.”  – Tim Winterflood

“I told Tim that I wanted the music video for Giftcard to be as awkward as Christmas sometimes is, and he really came up with the goods. I actually got a lot of compliments on the jacket while we were shooting. I like how we ended up creating this journey from all of the tacky, over the top parts of Christmas to the Tree farm, which was really natural and beautiful.” – Kay Proudlove

Indie-folk singer songwriter Kay Proudlove reveals unintentional Christmas song ‘Gift Card’ and announces summer performances

by the partae December 7, 2018
written by the partae

Wollongong born artist Kay Proudlove didn’t intend to write a Christmas song this year, but it’s happened and it’s not what you’d expect. Forget Bublé, bubbles and Christmas baubles, Kay is diving deep into the not-so-shiny parts of this tinsel laden season in her new track ‘Gift Card’ out today. Riddled, as always with clever wit, honesty and heart-on-her-sleeve raw emotion, the single actually doesn’t stray to far from what we’ve come to expect from the rising talent, and is likely to become another crowd favourite when she takes on a string of upcoming live shows this silly season.

With a remarkably agile, soul-bearing voice and a wry sense of humour, Kay Proudlovehas always written songs driven by narrative and powered by her love for the art of observation. On ‘Gift Card’, Kay covers everything from the financial and social stresses of Santa’s impeding visit, to the joy of witnessing pure human connection and of course, those thoughtful and not-so-thoughtful gifts – “surprise, it’s a gift card”. Mixed and mastered by Ben Davies at Silver Sound Recording Studio in Wollongong, ‘Gift Card’ is a classic folk sing-a-long, stripped back to its most pure to let Kay’s vocals and message shine through.

“The inspiration for ‘Gift Card’ came on a day when three separate people told me they couldn’t believe it was nearly Christmas. This was in October. It struck me that it’s something people say every year, which got me thinking about what people go through around Christmas – good and bad. I feel like there’s always this sense of time slipping away and that no one is ever prepared. But it can still be kind of exciting, which is where the lyrics ‘magical and desperate’ come from. There are so many mixed feelings about the festive season and I tried to capture some of those in this song. It’s very much a biographical track and I have definitely attended church straight after Christmas Eve drinks before.” – Kay Proudlove

Kay Proudlove’s live performance style is much like being invited into her lounge room; her songs are truly stories set to melody, by turns relatable, humorous and heartbreaking. The co-ordination that never showed up for Kay on any sort of sporting field has made itself known in a marriage of acoustic guitar and voice, with lyrics that can be equally poignant and hilarious in a single instance. Creating an intimacy between audience and performer through vulnerability, Kay’s live show is likely to leave you wondering whether all of the songs were about you.

After touring her live album I Should Have Done This Ages Ago and playing a bucket list of Festivals such as the Woodford Folk Festival, By The Banks Music Festival,Jamberoo Music Festival, as well as supporting artists such as Shaun Kirk, Tom Lee-Richards, Caiti Baker, Stevie Jean, The Northern Folk and more, Kay is excited to be bringing in the festive season with a bunch of live performances this summer.
