The Protocol Recordings label head delivers immense, driving basslines, warbling synths and upbeat percussion on the new release, which follows the sonic path he forged last year with tracks like "Everybody Clap" with Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike and "Ring the Alarm" with David Guetta. Moreso, "I See" is the premier single from Romero's forthcoming "Redefine" EP, which draws the focus to his club-oriented sound. The EP is just one of many aspects of the "Redefine" series concept, which also included a world tour, 3-part documentary series, merchandise line, and themed website. Additionally, ReKTGlobal just announced Nicky Romero as the headliner for their highly anticipated London Royal Ravens Home series, which is the United Kingdom's kickoff event for the inaugural season of the Call of Duty League on Feb. 8-9, 2020. The Call of Duty League event brings professional esports, exclusive entertainment, and behind-the-scenes access to fans and gamers with live tournament-style gameplay, VIP meet-and-greets, and Romero's headline show. He is also participating as a celeb contender in the Home Series' must-see 2v2 Hype Battle. After taking the world by storm with early hits such as "Legacy" (with Krewella) and #1 single "I Could Be The One" (with Avicii), Nicky Romero quickly proved that his talent is ever-evolving and here to stay. After launching his Protocol Recordings imprint in 2012, the renowned performer, producer and label head continued his personal successes with a string of high-profile releases, ranging from collabs with Mike Williams & Amba Shepherd, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, W&W, DallasK & XYLØ and Steve Aoki & Kiiara to remixes for the likes of Kygo, Rita Ora, David Guetta, Steve Aoki, Martin Garrix, Jess Glynne and more. All the while showcasing his label's roster via his weekly Protocol Radio show, Nicky Romero continues to touch down across the globe for his incredible live performances, including residencies at Las Vegas' Hakkasan and Omnia and forthcoming shows at ageHa in Tokio, Echostage in Washington DC, Du Arena in Abu Dhabi and more. 2020 is bound to be a huge year for Romero, so stay tuned to see what he has up his sleeve next. https://open.spotify.com/album/7GbPBsYoV0tXFhnXThsVcQ?highlight=spotify:track:3IOvs8528ie9laMQO4PLPD https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l72RA1XquA0 More info on Nicky Romero / Protocol Recordings: Nicky Romero: Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | Spotify Protocol Recordings: Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | Youtube

In Summer 2020, Electric Gardens delivers its biggest and most diverse lineup yet for its 5th anniversary: Half a decade of cutting-edge producers and world-class DJs will be celebrated in Sydney's shining Centennial Park on Saturday 22nd February 2020 including Armand Van Helden, DJ EZ, Craig David Presents T5, Nora En Pure, Gorgon City, Alan Fitzpatrick, My Nu Leng, Pan-Pot, Reinier Zonneveld live, Wilkinson and many more world class DJs and live shows.  Since a game-changing debut  back in 2016, Electric Gardens has established itself as an essential boutique event for electronic music fans across the country. Electric Gardens 2020 continues the event's tradition of presenting top-tier electronic artists and underground sensations; with dazzling stage production, generous set times and a pristine location. It's careful curation that has seen the event become a staple for Australian fans over the past five years, and the milestone is a testament to Electric Gardens dedication to booking exciting electronic talent, while simultaneously steering clear of trend-dependent and novelty acts.  The Electric Gardens 2020 bill is headed up by none other than acclaimed multi-million record selling artist Craig David, who will be bringing his widely-praised TS5 show Down Under. Combining his skills as a DJ and live performer, TS5 sees David fuse seasoned classics with contemporary anthems for a sprawling party set, drawing upon his extensive background in UK Garage, dance, pop and R&B. David's high-energy TS5 set has graced the biggest festivals stages across the globe including Glastonbury, Tomorrowland and will now close out Electric Gardens in riveting fashion after sold out UK and US tour and continued Top 5 UK chart placings for his most recent singles.  Next is US house pioneer Armand Van Helden, who has very much helped define the genres with his vital work on labels like Nervous, Southern Fried and Strictly Rhythm and many more. Always drawing on hip hop, r&b and soul for his sample sources, he has a heartfelt sound with a real sense of groove that has got people dancing for decades, and the big personality continues to be a key player in the global scene.  A longtime crowd favourite in Australia and abroad, DJ EZ will be bringing the UKG a-plenty to Electric Gardens Sydney. Quite possibly the best DJ in the world right now, Elvin is a master selector who has honed his incredible skills on radio airwaves, clubs and festivals for well over two decades. Electric Gardens is also excited to welcome South African-Swiss producer Nora En Pure who will be bringing her ethereal set to the Sydney stage. And after dominating the charts with their recent Billboard Dance #1 singles 'There For You' and 'Go Slow', one of the most in demand acts in the industry, UK duo Gorgon City will be making their highly-anticipated return to Australia. For fans of techno and blistering BPM, Berlin duo Pan-Pot and the esteemed Alan Fitzpatrick will get dancefloors moving while Filth on Acid head honcho Reinier Zonneveld will flex his skills with a punchy live set. Bass enthusiasts will be well looked after, too: Having long established himself as a favourite on the local festival circuit, What So Not will return home to Australia for Electric Gardens Festival, joined onstage by surprise special guests for the exclusive debut of his brand new live set of atmospheric yet heavy tunes. He'll be joined by fellow Australian hero ShockOne off the back of his 2019 album A Dark Machine, as well as UK drum & bass producer Wilkinson, who just sold out the O2, is a regular at Ibiza's iconic Together night and always races through a blizzard of different genres with real skill. His electric set will be complemented with DJ Ad-Apt on the microphone.  The latest additions include Brazil's leading progrssive house pioneer and enduring Kompakt label associate Gui Boratto, who always brings waves of emotions to his grooves, plus Spanish house giant and long time Amnesia resident Mar T, as well as Lucille Croft, Hoten and Ricky Cooper & Andy Ef. The Electric Gardens story begins back in 2001 in the UK, when visiting Australian dance fans Damian Gelle and Anton Marmot threw a backyard party in Walthamstow. Inviting their DJ friends to play and charging a small cover, the intimate gathering was a success, and it eventually evolved into South West Four festival in 2004. That event still attracts well over 70,000 attendees at Clapham Common to this day. Armed with first-hand festival knowledge, experience and connections; the duo returned home to Australia and founded Electric Gardens, with the goal of providing a European party atmosphere Down Under. Five years down the track, the mission is being fulfilled every year, with Electric Gardens blossoming into one of the most essential festivals of them all.  This next chapter of Electric Gardens is set to kick off in style on February 22, and is a faultless day of dance in the Sydney summer.

Untitled Group have once again successfully attained the lease for one of Australia’s most unique & exciting event spaces. Melbourne’s iconic Wool Store Warehouse, which has previously hosted world class talents Solomon, Jamie Jones, John Talabot, Willaris. K, and DMA’s, will host a series of revered events in 2020.. After laying dormant for many decades, Untitled Group will once again bring the monumental building to life fitting the space with a new world-class sound system paired with their signature meticulously curated production & set designs. Built in the 1940s, the Australian Heritage Commission (AHC) listed 'Wool Store' is of regional historical, cultural & architectural significance. It is the largest single wool store building in Victoria, built on a grand scale with considerable architectural refinement. It represents a peak of pastoral development when Australia rode on the sheep's back with the wool industry playing a significant role in the development of Australia, carrying it's economy post-World War 2 in what is now known as the 'post-war wool boom'. The venue is an addition to Untitled Group’s fast growing portfolio including Beyond the Valley, Pitch Music & Arts, Wildlands, Grapevine Gathering, and Ability Fest, as well as the company’s established management, booking & label divisions. The first headliner for The Wool Store’s resurgence will be announced shortly. Keep your eyes peeled on Untitled Group’s facebook page.

THE VANNS announce ‘RED EYE TOUR’ for March/April and release alternate version of 'JULES SAID’ from acclaimed debut album, THROUGH THE WALLS It has been an absolutely huge 12 months for THE VANNS. With the release of their debut album Through The Walls, the South Coast band firmly cemented their identity as one of Australia’s most formidable names on the indie rock circuit. Now, with a new decade already kicking into gear, The VANNS announce they’re getting back out on the road this Autumn and to boot, they’re releasing a special new version of album track, ‘Jules Said’. The new single, written by Jimmy Vann and Cameron Little expands upon the original album version, with the band hitting the studio with Grammy nominated, ARIA winning producer Adrian Breakspear (Gang of Youths, Pharrell Williams) to bring this new version of ‘Jules Said’ to life. “Jim and I wrote ‘Jules Said’ in my bedroom in under an hour. It was the first song we finished writing for Through The Walls. We were doing a lot of writing on Logic and trying to come up with ‘cool sounds’ for a while, and then we went out to lunch and were like, ‘When we get back, let’s just try and write something with two guitars and no computer’.” Cameron Little Earning acclaim from fans and throughout the industry, The VANNS embraced powerful melodies, driving guitar and songwriting strength with Through The Walls and as the reaction to the album went on to prove, the four-piece were definitely showing up and demonstrating long-lasting quality on record. Nabbing triple j’s Feature Album spot during Ausmusic Month 2019, rave reviews and fired up crowds across all dates of their Australian tour at the tailend of last year, The VANNS stepped further into the Australian music spotlight than before. Not ones to waste time, the band’s forthcoming tour dates are ready to keep the momentum going. “Really pumped to be heading back out on tour, especially doing other venues and towns we haven’t done in a while. Playing to a new crowd, some of whom may not have seen/heard the album songs live yet is super refreshing and can make a show feel unpredictable. That’s something I really love about touring and am excited to be a part of.” Andrew Banovich “Another strong track from this froth-worthy band. The VANNS have gotta be one of the best indie rock acts in the country right now.” Triple J Unearthed, Dave Ruby Howe “Easy to see why The VANNS have popped off in such a big way in recent years. They know their way around a pop rock winner like they wrote the map.” Triple J Unearthed, Tommy Faith “The four piece have grown to become a quintessential name to the Australian rock scene and the many pockets of brilliance it contains, taking a ‘quality AND quantity’ approach to songwriting that ensures that they’re never quite forgotten about without having to compensate in their work’s strength.” Pilerats “Packed to the brim with the charm and infectious hooks that we’ve come to know and love from the band, along with evocative and emotional songwriting.” Music Feeds THE VANNS AUSTRALIAN TOUR DATES Presented by triple j With Special Guests Death By Denim Tickets: https://www.thevannsband.com/shows Thursday, March 19th Altar Bar Hobart* Friday, March 20th Howler Melbourne Saturday, March 21st Adelaide Unibar Adelaide* Friday, March 27th Sol Bar Sunshine Coast Saturday, March 28th Crowbar Brisbane Friday, April 3rd Wollongong Uni Wollongong Saturday, April 4th Cambridge Hotel Newcastle Friday, April 17th Indian Ocean Hotel Perth *Death By Denim not appearing ‘Jules Said’ is released Friday, January 17th. Melbourne native DJ Boring finally returns home to Australia for ten dates

by the partae January 17, 2020

Tour Dates

Saturday 7 March: Days Like This, Sydney
Sunday 8 March: Pitch Music & Arts, Melbourne
Thursday 12 March: Electric Rush, Queenstown
Friday 13 March: 121 Festival, Wellington
Saturday 14 March: Outpost Bar, Brisbane
Sunday 15 March: Nevermind Smallclub, Perth
Friday 20 March: Sugar, Adelaide
Saturday 21 March: Tusk Bar, Wollongong
Saturday 21 March: Goodbar, Sydney
Sunday 22 March: Revolver Upstairs, Melbourne

Out of a Melbourne bedroom in early 2016, a new underground house music movement was spawned, leading to an undeniable dancefloor anthem and a limitless career for Tristan Hallis. Better known as DJ Boring, he is synonymous with the lo-fi house sound which he kick-started in 2016 with his track ‘Winona Ryder‘. With over 5 million Youtube plays and counting, that track came to represent the definition of lo-fi house.

Since then, the Australian has moved to London and conquered Europe. For proof, look no further than his Boiler Room recording from the 2019 AVA Festival in Ireland which was one of the event’s most-watched streams. His sound still maintains the key characteristics that saw his career explode, including the infamous sound of Roland 909, dreamy FM synthesizers and a hell of a lot of vinyl static. As a DJ he is known for being a dance floor controlling master, a selector who can throw down obscure new cuts alongside classic late-90’s house or techno.

DJ Boring’s return back home will see him play 10 dates, including Pitch Music & Arts and Days Like This festivals, alongside filling a coveted Triple J residency for March.

DJ BORING aka Tristan Hallis could be the most ironically named performer today: energetic journeys into forgotten gems and future classics, nothing about what he does is boring. He inhabits a space where throwback trance sits comfortably with old-school house, and Belgium Techno syncs with rolling funk. He meets each mix physically with sweaty, infectious performances that are compelling to watch. In the studio, the producer has honed in on a contemporary sound paying homage to dance music’s dense past. Whether its Detroit Techno-inspired or Chicago House layered with obscure Youtube samples, his productions are birthed in hardware and imbued with Hallis’ energetic personality – humanity sorely lacking in many productions today. This trait shines through in his new live show where hardware and controllers become a natural extension of his creative self, a conduit through which he presents a fresh take on his music.

"A couple years ago I wanted to learn to make sourdough bread, as did my good friends Emilyn Stam and Alan Mackie (who also performed on this album). We enlisted the help of our friend Anne Hartman: banjo picker, instrument builder, and baker extraordinaire. Over the course of a day, Anne guided us through the subtleties of creating a good dough, shaping loaves by hand, and baking to perfection. We spent the afternoon playing old-time fiddle and banjo tunes together while we waited for the bread to rise, and since that day, the three of us have never stopped baking! We've also passed on our knowledge (and our sourdough starter) to other friends, and the baking and breaking of bread has come to be synonymous with care, companionship, and a love of simple pleasures. I wrote this song to express my gratitude to Anne for a gift that has continued to give." - Nathan Smith Growing up in North Bay, Ontario, Nathan began playing classical violin at the age of six, all the while being steeped in Irish and Canadian fiddling. While studying and playing viola in the University of Ottawa string quartet and the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra, Nathan was also drawn to playing and singing American bluegrass music, and he eventually settled in Toronto to study Jazz and Contemporary Music at Humber College. Soon after, he began singing and playing in his own innovative bluegrass band, The Barrel Boys, who have released two original albums. A skilled and versatile musician, Nathan writes and performs his own traditionally inspired original compositions in addition to playing and singing with Western Swing outfit The Double Cuts, bluegrass dobro legend Ivan Rosenberg, and folk multi-instrumentalist Emilyn Stam. https://www.nathansmithmusic.net/ https://www.instagram.com/nathanonfiddle/

Get Physical turn to Spanish artist Squire for a pair of tracks that show the fast-rising star could be one of the breakouts of 2020.  Squire was brought up on jazz before getting into house sounds, and always keeps his grooves deep and emotive. With one eye on history but one foot heading forwards he has released on this label as well as Kindisch, Behrouz’ Do Not Sit On The Furniture and My Favorite Robot Records amongst many more. This has taken him to clubs around Europe and even Burning Man, Space Ibiza and BPM Festival.   Tasteful house opener 'Inner World' is a sublime seven-minute opus with cinematic drama in the synths and effects that light up the drums. They are firmly rooted to the floor and get you in the zone and keep you there for the duration as a storytelling lead plots its own adventurous path with a hint of Middle Eastern melancholy.  The excellent 'Indicus' is a spine-tingling deep house track with more majestic synths and chords up top; chords brightly coloured and laden with a rollercoaster of emotions that make this a hugely accomplished production that is again finished with some subtle Middle Eastern sounding vocal chanting. This is assured and atmospheric house music as ever from Squire.

The Growlers / Star Crawlers – Melbourne – The Croxton 16 January 2020

by the partae January 17, 2020
written by the partae

Photography: Nate Hill https://www.natehillphotography.com.au/

Words: Chris Brooks

Starcrawler burst onto the stage at Thornbury’s the Croxton like a feral cat jumping out of a hat, wild and raw.  Mesmerising limbs, long blonde hair framing the occasional glimpse of an intoxicating face and a tall gaunt body that without notice would explode with brute force, a very rare artistic ability that would entrance the audience with the slightest gesture of pure screeching Banshee darkness.

Starcrawler have the ability to take you to the edge and beyond, leaving you with a feeling of what the fuck just happened?! Starcrawler are a mysterious, alluring, sex scuzz rock fuck machine.

Then rolled in the oh so chill The Growlers to a young and hungry ready to party sold out Croxton crowd.  The vibe was wholesome, upbeat with a lot of singalongs.   The Beach Goth kings were in town and everyone in attendance was high on the scent and ready to party the night away.

The Growlers played a sexy, sweaty mix of tracks that spanned across all albums keeping the eager crowd guessing as to what was coming up next.  Singer Brooks Nielson interacted with the crowd keeping the party vibe high and energy levels soaring.  The set was uplifting and the night felt more like a house party than a club show.  All in all it was great show by both unique acts, thanks for a fucking awesome party to everyone who attended, it was definitely a night to remember!!

London-based, Sydney native Josef unveils his brand new single on selfless, consuming love ‘in the afternoon’ - a sultry pop delight that emits Josef’s signature energy of electronic-pop music with a human pulse. The accompanying official video perfectly narrates the theme of love transcending time.   ‘in the afternoon’ is the second single from Josef since his return, which kicked off with ‘modern anxiety’ and it’s official video, designed exclusively to watch on your mobile phone. Sonically, a pop banger. Visually, an unnervingly pertinent and anxiety-inducing accompaniment, encapsulating the modern world of 24/7 social media noise.

London-based, Sydney native Josef unveils his brand new single on selfless, consuming love ‘in the afternoon’ – a sultry pop delight that emits Josef’s signature energy of electronic-pop music with a human pulse.

Josef burst onto the international music scene in 2014 with the dark, brooding electropop of ‘Hustler’. He went on to release the critically acclaimed debut album Night Swim while quietly becoming an underground hero as a featured vocalist on tracks with the likes Gryffin and Tourist among others. He has sold out multiple tours in the UK and Europe where he also scored a #1 airplay record with ‘Open Season’, a Gold record with ‘Diamonds’ and a gold album with Night Swim in France.

PRAISE FOR PINEGROVE “Pinegrove (recall) some of the most consistently likable rock bands of the past 20 years in their most easy going phases: There’s the rootsy shamble of early Wilco, the wiggly guitar solos and general guilelessness of pre-prog Built to Spill. But beneath the amiable surface is an intense work about one of the most important things imaginable: how to make our friendships really matter.” - Pitchfork "There's a confessional quality to the songs of Pinegrove that feels reassuring. The problems that swirl around Evan Stephens Hall's head feel universal”  - NPR "Pinegrove have finally cracked the code to perfecting the warbly emo-country ebullience that only they do so well. PRAISE FOR PINEGROVE

“Pinegrove (recall) some of the most consistently likable rock bands of the past 20 years in their most easy going phases: There’s the rootsy shamble of early Wilco, the wiggly guitar solos and general guilelessness of pre-prog Built to Spill. But beneath the amiable surface is an intense work about one of the most important things imaginable: how to make our friendships really matter.” – Pitchfork

“There’s a confessional quality to the songs of Pinegrove that feels reassuring. The problems that swirl around Evan Stephens Hall’s head feel universal”  – NPR

“Pinegrove have finally cracked the code to perfecting the warbly emo-country ebullience that only they do so well. Guitars whistle with a sticky-sweet twang, Evan Hall’s striking and sentimental poetry twisting elegantly around the band’s labyrinthine compositions.” – Australian Guitar

“…this ruddy cheeked collective rekindle the guileless spirit of mid-90s alt rock (Wilco; Buffalo Tom).a surge of power-chord melancholy.” – MOJO, ★★★★

SUPPORT FOR STUPID BABY "It's big sounding stuff from Stupid Baby. A tidy mix of shoegaze, dreamy and grunge that works so well. Keen to hear more!" - 4/5 stars - Declan Byrne - triple j (AUS) "Stupid Baby deliver deliciously dark debut 'Feline'." - Life Without Andy (AUS) NSW Central Coast-based indie-rock quartet, Stupid Baby have just unveiled their stunning debut single ‘Feline’ – produced by Simon Dobson (Bootleg Rascal) and mixed by Dylan Adams (DMA’s, Skegss, The Gooch Palms, West Thebarton). Taking cues from the likes of The Kills, Sonic Youth and The Dead Weather, ‘Feline’ is a brooding and thought-provoking slice of sophisticated indie-rock, that swiftly sets the pace with its immediate and unwavering consistency. Dynamics and structure are harnessed with finesse, as deft instrumentation provides an apt foundation for the dual vocal efforts of Liz Drummond and Jake Dobson to brightly shine. Drummond describes the motivation behind ‘Feline’: “We felt ‘Feline’ was a good introduction to what’s to come from Stupid Baby. We wrote it pretty quickly in the room together, starting with the riff. The lyrics were fairly stream of consciousness between Jake and I, which we liked. We wanted to hone in on the dual vocal thing, and for all the parts of this song to be driving, and alluding to some kind of intense relationship dynamic. It's probably one of the moodier, darker Stupid Baby songs”.
