Her Songs release stunning new single ‘If We Try’ FFO Poppy Ajudha x Celeste

by the partae January 29, 2020
written by the partae

Her songs are a collective that owe their origins to a conversation started between the five women on social media. The group released their debut EP ‘Los Angeles’ in 2018, creating a mesmeric collection of songs that fused 90s indebted R&B with contemporary production. Now, the group have returned with their new single ‘If We Try’, the first from their new EP ‘Toronto Vol.1’.

‘If We Try’ is a clear step forward for the group, fusing their lush harmonies with a rolling groove that recalls the downtempo details of Erykah Badu, Bonobo, and Quantic. The song was written by members Emmavie and Marie Dahlstrom and inspired by their mutual love of soul and R&B.

On the track Danish-London residing member, Marie Dahlstrom says, ´If
We Try’ is about asking the person you love for a second chance. Sometimes people are quick to break relationships off when things get rough but this song is about finding strength in vulnerability. We live in a world of instant gratification and relationships can often feel replaceable. We wanted to change the narrative: you get so much more when you try.’

‘If We Try’ is the first snapshot of the groups forthcoming EP ‘Toronto Vol 1.’ an EP bursting with bold ideas and fresh sounds. It is the result of collaboration between widespread backgrounds, cultures, and musical identities with one ambitious goal: writing and producing 4 songs in 4 days. The EP moves from sun-kissed R&B to heartfelt ballads, showing the considerable range of the remarkable group.

Her Songs is comprised of Emmavie (UK), Emily C Browning (New Zealand), The Naked Eye (UK/France), Marie Dahlstrøm (Denmark) and Dani Murcia (US/Colombia). Stay tuned for more news.

 Her Songs are:

Dani Murcia (Vocals, Piano, Guitar, Production)

Dani Murcia is an R&B/Pop/Soul songwriter from Miami. Raised by Colombian parents in an eccentric, warm, and care-free city, and continuing her career in the more reserved, gloomy, and sped up city of NYC, has helped shaped Murcia’s distinctive soundscape. Murcia creates new worlds through lush harmonies and haunting melodies, influenced by artists like Nick Hakim, Kimbra, and Matt Corby. Her latest EP “Breaking Light” is a collection of stories about grieving her father’s suicide and searching for beauty in pain.

Emily C Browning (Vocals, Guitar)

Emily C. Browning is an indie/soul artist from Christchurch, New Zealand, Influenced by the rule-breaking melodic direction of Emily King, Lianne La Havas and Nai Palm. Her lyrical angle brushes off as conversational but will catch you off-guard with nuanced commentary, and a deeper perspective of the human experience.

The Naked Eye (Vocals, Guitar)

The Naked Eye is the artist name for French-English singer/songwriter/guitarist Francesca Hole, who is currently based in London. She describes her music as having a fusion of Jazz, Soul, Folk and RnB, and writes autobiographical songs about life experiences, relationships and overcoming hardships. Her latest EP ‘Love’s Grave’ was released in April this year and was inspired by a range of influences spanning from songwriters and poets Nai Palm, Lianne La Havas, Maya Angelou, Joni Mitchell, D’Angelo, Bruno Major and many more. The Naked Eye finds making music cathartic and empowering, and loves how you can start the day with nothing in a session and end with a song.

Marie Dahlstrøm (Vocals, Piano, Percussion, Production)

Danish, London based artist Marie Dahlstrøm is well known for her warm, ethereal jazz/soul/R&B amalgam. Following fruitful collaborations with the likes of Tom Misch and Alfa Mist, the past 12 months have seen Marie writing and producing the songs that would eventually form her debut album.

Emmavie (Vocals & Production)

Emmavie is a singer/songwriter and producer from London whose music is an amalgamation of 90s R&B and her love for digital audio experimentation. Like her music, her personal style and gender expression is fluid and free of boundaries. Emmavie has credits spawned across the world including collaborations with IAMNOBODI, Buddy, ROMderful, Jarreau Vandal, Alfa Mist, Nick Grant and Jay Prince, and has had her music featured on Oprah Winfrey’s network produced series, “Queen Sugar”. In August 2019, Emmavie was scouted by legendary DJ and Fresh Prince of Bel Air star, DJ Jazzy Jeff and flown out to his house in Delaware to spend a week making music with the likes of Mac Ayres Robert Glasper and Redman as part of the Playlist Retreat.

LISTEN TO ‘AFTER THE MOVIE’ EP HERE MUSAR RECORDINGS RICARDO TOBAR – ‘AFTER THE MOVIE’ EP OUT NOW   Releasing his first ever vinyl release ‘El Sunset’ on James Holden’s, Border Community back in 2007, Chilean producer Ricardo Tobar has since intricately constructed his way around the parameters of emotionally-lead, highly atmospheric electronic music. Having brought his sound forward to grace the rosters of Jennifer Cardini’s, Correspondant, ESP Institute and MUSAR Recordings, Ricardo continues to extend his already significant discography, now returning to MUSAR Recordings for a third time with ‘After The Movie’ EP.   Title track, ‘After The Movie’ forms a special cut that has been held in Ricardo’s locker for quite some time. Uncovered by MUSAR Recordings label head, on a podcast from way back, it seemed only natural that this unreleased music from Ricardo would find its home on the Amsterdam-Tel-Aviv label.   “This EP is quite special to me because it reflects a long timeline in my work. The ‘After The Movie’ track had been in the vault for ages until David from MUSAR found it in an old podcast; it really takes me back to those first steps in recording music.” Ricardo Tobar   Across his EP, Ricardo plays with varying textures and arrangements that in turn provide a cross-section of his sound that has expanded and developed over time. ‘After The Movie’ presents the experimental ambience synonymous with his early works, whilst ‘Parques’ brings an idyllic, cinematic feel with strictly crafted synth arrangements riding high, post-rock influences also show through. ‘Regain Your Power’ represents a change of course, whilst also channeling a political message punctuated by social unrest taking place in Ricardo’s home country, Chile. He abandons experimentalism in favour of tougher 4x4 elements, allowing his machines to run riot.   “The mixture of ideas and feelings on this EP have a politically charged spirit, as electronic music always does. A few weeks after I finished ‘Regain Your Power’ the whole Chilean social explosion took place with the same ideals I had in mind when recording the track.” Ricardo Tobar   Stepping up on the remix is a pair whose names are etched into the history of UK electronic music, Andy Turner and Ed Handley a.k.a. Plaid. Reworking title track ‘After The Movie’, they produce an emotive, soundscape complete with droning basslines and ex-terrestrial flourishes.   To accompany and compliment the psychedelic sonics of Plaid’s unique mix, distinguished creative film-maker Max Kelan Pearce provides a visual representation in his exclusive music video, following on from his previous works for Hodge and Minimal Violence. Premiered by tastemaker blog, The Ransom Note, Max experiments with VHS degradation and archive footage, all overlaid with viscous swirling textures of ‘Ink in Milk’ techniques for trippy, psychedelic effect. Stepping up on the remix is a pair whose names are etched into the history of UK electronic music, Andy Turner and Ed Handley a.k.a.

UNIVERSAL / POSITIVA 'FOREVER YOURS' (AVICII TRIBUTE) WITH KYGO, AVICII, SANDRO CAVAZZA OUT NOW During a trip across the US in 2016, Sandro Cavazza shared the early stages of the track with his friend, the beloved and acclaimed DJ/producer/musician/songwriter and performer Tim “Avicii” Bergling. Tim immediately started working on the track, but never got the chance to finish it before he tragically passed away. Inspired by Tim's demo version played at Ultra Music Festival, Kygo and Sandro have together produced a version to honour his memory. The single release of ‘Forever Yours (Avicii Tribute)’ will shortly be followed by a full length video where Kygo and Sandro Cavazza talk about the process of arriving at the final version, what Tim and this song meant to each of them. In 2015 Sandro Cavazza started working with Tim, top lining and co-writing songs for 2015's Stories album (Sunset Jesus, Gonna Love Ya). In 2016 Sandro was asked to join Tim on a bus tour, driving across the US going through national parks and writing music along the way, ending the tour in Miami for Tim’s show at Ultra Festival.    “We wrote many songs during that trip, including ‘Without You’ in the back of a bus, but also songs that were premiered at Ultra when we arrived there for the show.”  Sandro Cavazza   Beyond their platinum selling record ‘Without You’, released on Avīci (01) in 2017, ‘Forever Yours’ was one of these songs.   “I had shown it to Tim two days before starting the tour and Tim had come up with an incredible first demo that he asked me if he could play at Ultra. That was four years ago and I’ve lost a friend since. This version of Forever Yours is a tribute to Tim that me and Kygo has put together to honor what he has meant to both of us. He was Kygo’s biggest idol and his biggest inspiration and that’s what has made this tribute possible”  Sandro continues.   Out of the thousands of people who remembered hearing the mystery track during Avicii’s set at Ultra was Kyrre Gørvell-Dahll, a.k.a DJ/producer Kygo. “That song felt special” says Kygo, who credits the late producer as inspiration for starting his electronic music journey. Like his biggest inspiration, Kygo became a world-renowned DJ and producer thanks to his countless hits and sold-out shows as well as headline performances.  When Tim passed in April 2018, Sandro reached out to Kygo to see if he would want to put together a version of Forever Yours as a tribute to Tim, to honour what he had meant for both of them. For Kygo, it was a realisation of a goal for the DJ/producer.   “When Sandro sent me that song, I felt like that was the closest I could get to collaborate with Tim” Kygo    Kygo’s, Avicii’s and Sandro Cavazza’s net proceeds from the track will go to the nonprofit Tim Bergling Foundation which benefits organisations that support mental health issues, suicide prevention and education – as well as wildlife conservation and other issues that Bergling had an interest in and passion for. Tour Announcement | The Offspring Announce A Greatest Hits Australian Tour With Very Special Guests Sum 41

by the partae January 28, 2020
written by the partae
THE OFFSPRING, one of the world’s most exciting and enduring punk rock legends need little introduction.

Having performed over 1100 shows across the globe, selling more than 40 million albums worldwide the band are thrilled to return to Australia for their first headline tour in 16 years in April with very special guests SUM 41.

In true THE OFFSPRING style, this will be no ordinary show. Their incendiary live show will showcase wall to wall bangers of their anthemic, oft-humorous punk-pop singles throughout their impressive career including all of the band’s best-known hits such as Self Esteem, Come Out And Play (Keep ‘Em Separated), The Kids Aren’t Alright, Original Prankster, You’re Gonna Go Far, Kid and loads more!

Joining this titanic double bill of epic punk rock proportions is SUM 41 who will be performing a full one-hour set including hits such as Fat Lip, In too Deep, Still Waiting and tracks from their latest release, Order In Decline. Order In Decline is undoubtedly SUM 41’S heaviest and most aggressive album in their storied career, while also being its most dynamic and raw.

After over 15 million records sold worldwide, a Grammy Award nomination, 2 Juno Awards (7 nominations), a Kerrang! Award in 2002, as well as multiple Alternative Press Music Awards, SUM 41 are uncompromising and honest with no intention of slowing down.

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to see these two punk power houses in action so start warming up those vocal chords, iron that crusty punk shirt and get yourself down to one of these shows.

Brookvale Oval All ages Tickets $55 2 – 9pm https://www.beachesrockrelief.com.au/ Sydney’s Northern Beaches Council is staging a Rock Relief concert at Brookvale Oval to support bushfire and drought-affected communities. The all-ages show will kick off at 2pm on Saturday 15 February and aims to raise over $1 million. Tickets cost $55 and are on sale now here. People are also encouraged to make an additional donation at the time of purchase to help raise as much money as possible and to show how much the Northern Beaches community cares. All profits from the show, and booking fees through the ticketing agency Humanitix, will be donated to the Red Cross Disaster Relief and Recovery campaign. The Rural Fire Service (RFS) who have been partnering with Council at other summer events to raise funds, will also be onsite collecting for their bushfire appeal. Showing their support for the devastated communities are some of the top names in Australian music, including: •       Christine Anu •       Dog Trumpet •       Furnace and the Fundamentals •       GRAACE •       Hoodoo Gurus •       Hot Dub Time Machine •       Shannon Noll •       The Choirboys •       The Superjesus •       Xavier Dunn Mayor Michael Regan said the scale of the bushfire and drought devastation was shocking. “I am really humbled by the generous response to Rock Relief. With this line-up it’s going to be a very special event and I know we can smash our $1 million fundraising target. “This crisis is like nothing we have ever seen and I have been inundated by people in the community wanting to help out. While Council has been supporting our sister city Gunnedah, raising funds through Rotary at our summer events, supporting urgent donation collections at local surf clubs and donating all the profits from the Sun Run to Wires, this event will make a huge difference to thousands of suffering families. “Those lucky enough to get tickets can be confident knowing they will have a great day and they are contributing to a great cause. “The crisis is not over yet and the best thing we can do now is to support the front line agencies like the Red Cross so they can get the funds to where they are needed most.” Multi-award winning, singer and songwriter Christine Anu says its times like this we need to connect and help each other. “Like the millions all over the world, I too have looked on with devastation as these bushfires ravage our country. In times like these, Australians are so good at coming together like one big family to support each other. “I’m thrilled to be a part of Rock Relief, knowing that it will raise some much needed funds and bring people together. Let’s focus on connection and community when we need it most,” she said. Where are you currently based and what is the music scene like there?  I’m currently based in Sydney, living in Cronulla. To my understanding, the music scene in town and around Sydney has been hit pretty hard by some really short sighted legislation over the last few years, some of which has very recently been repealed. I have high hopes that things will turn around and get better for artists and business, but that really comes down to people being willing to spend the money and time supporting local and independent artists.  How did you first start playing music?  I started singing lessons when I was in Year 6. I didn’t actually think anything would come of it, I just kind of figured out that I could do it and thought it keep it up as a creative outlet. When I started getting guitar lessons from my band mate Luke, we realised pretty quickly that something could be made of it if we could cobble some songs together. About a year later, here we are.  What's been happening recently?  Since pretty much the start of the year, Luke and I have been touring nationally with The Beautiful Girls, which has been fantastic. In between, we played the Make It Rain benefit in Byron, and that was just an amazing few nights. Beyond that, really just trying to consume and learn from as much new music as possible and trying desperately to write some new material.  Have you been recording lately?  Not since the first batch of recordings that yielded the songs we’ve released up until now. But myself and the band are keen to get back into the studio in the coming months to work on some new material that we’ve been playing around with for a few months. By that time, I should have already written up some new stuff too. In short, I’m optimistic that we’ll have some new stuff recorded within the year.  How do you approach the recording process?  The best approach, I think, is just to be as prepared as possible. Have the songs mostly finished either in your head or jammed out between the band. Also be willing to experiment and change up songs. It’s really hard to make changes to something that, in your head, already feels final and complete, but getting rid of that voice that says “don’t change anything, it won’t be as good” can open up a whole array of new ideas and sounds. Or it could be trash, in which case you’re going in with even less doubt about your original ideas. It’s win-win, really.  What programs/instruments do you use? During the shows, I just play an acoustic guitar of Luke’s. Really beautiful piece of kit. Otherwise, I don’t play anything. My main instrument is definitely my voice. In the studio, we record the acoustic live and Luke will jump on his Jazzmaster for effects, riffs and whatnot. We use Cubebase to record the tracks. Who do you usually work with? For the most part, it’s myself, Luke, our drummer James and our bass player Chris that make up the band. In the studio, Luke and Ian Pritchett co-produce the material.  What's been happening on the touring front? We kicked off on the Beautiful Girls’ tour at the very beginning of January. Since then it’s been either driving or flying from here to there, Queensland to Victoria back to NSW. A lot of really great shows, a lot of really great people. It’s great meeting people and talking to people in between and throughout shows, hearing what people think, what they like and what they don’t. It’s one of the best parts of touring, just seeing new people and new places.  Who are you listening to at the moment? Over the last few weeks I’ve been trying to get to some artists that have been on my list for a while that I haven’t really explored yet. Most recently, I’ve been listening through Rage Against the Machine’s discography because it keeps me awake in transit. I’ll be moving on to Outkast and Björk after that. Radiohead, Talking Heads, David Bowie and Swans make up a consistent part of my music diet. And the odd individual album here and there. Sunbather by Deafheaven made an appearance, which is about the prettiest nightmare I’ve ever subjected myself to.  Who or what influences your sound and songwriting? My songwriting is largely influenced by whatever I’m listening to at the current period in time. It’s never one artists necessarily, but I try to take the best parts or the best sounds or the best ideas from a few artists and turn it into something that, at the very least, sound like my own words. According to David Bowie, “Picasso said, it’s not what you steal, it’s how you use it”. At this point in my career, any comparisons to the people I idolise are welcome, because the people I idolise are brilliant.  What do you like to do away from music? I do a lot of video gaming. A whole lot of video gaming. Probably too much, but I think there’s massive artistic merit in games that frequently overlooked. I try to read as much as possible as well. I’ve been chugging through David Byrne’s How Music Works, which is a really, really well-written and insightful read. I’ve also been attempting, albeit slower than I would like, to catch up on a lot of movies and TV that’s been sitting on a list for far too long.  What's planned for 2020? Honestly, its hard to say. A lot of what we’re doing is playing by ear, seeing how our releases go and planning it out from there. We’re definitely keen to continue along with the tour, definitely keen to get in the studio at some point. A lot of writing in between, a lot of gigging. Basically just working on building up this pretty little empire in any way possible.  Favourite food and place to hang out? It would either be pizza or chicken. In saying that, our family restaurant, Queen Margherita in Cronulla, makes a hell of a Bolognese. By far my favourite thing in the place. As for my favourite place to hang out, there’s really nothing like home for me. But I’ll find enjoyment any place as long as I’m with the right people who can keep me distracted enough to where I don’t miss my bed too much.  Facebook: www.facebook.com/Jacksoncarrollaus/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jacksoncarrollaus/?hl=en Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/1xjA70Ji8QMKD1lYlrSo9b?si=a6rcGChYTY2kwxhcF0EgKQ

For Avoidant’s 3rd release and kicking off 2020 for the label is Autonomous. After a chance meeting and several demo exchanges, this new project has birthed the Dialekt EP. Drawing inspiration from Drexciyan-era Electro, Autonomous delivers on high intensity, funked out and mercurial minded tracks, designed with attitude and channelling the spirit of raw Detroit electronics.    Title track Dialekt, is a mechanical mind bender as an ominous synth hook draws you deeper into the world of the Automaton. The Void remains steady with precision 808 beats and percussion, leading against a backdrop of twisted, acid soaked synths and a stylistic 80’s string. Celestial Spaces closes out this perfectly defined debut EP from Autonomous, once again focusing on clearly defined drums and a warped, undulating hook.   Avoidant Records is a brand-new label from Glasgow rooted in leftfield electro and diverse sonics which launched in October 2019.
