Sophie Castriota Interview

by the partae May 11, 2020
written by the partae

Where are you currently based?

I’m currently based in Brisbane, Australia

How did you first start playing music?

I started playing violin when I was 4 years old… It’s always been a passion of mine.

I was part of many orchestra’s and ensembles growing up.

I had been told by various influential people that I would end up as a concert violinist, but that direction changed when I started improvising and experimenting with music; and that’s when I realised I had an interest in Middle Eastern and Balkan sounds.

My singing came later on… I was actually embarrassed to sing in front of people for a long period of time … I truly didn’t think I could sing.

When I turned 18, I took an interest in song writing and music production and that’s kind of where it all began.

What have you been working on recently?

I’ve just released my new song called “Tøngue Tied” which came out on the 21st of April.

I’m now preparing for my next release which comes out this month on the 20th called “Not My Vibe”; – so stayed tuned for that!

Your new single ‘Tongue Tied’ is out now, what influenced the sound and song writing? How did you go about writing Tongue Tied?

Using my emotional pain and turning that into my art is kind of my escape and how I deal with things… It’s actually very therapeutic.

I feel a lot and I am very in touch with my emotions… when I feel, I write.

In the past I’ve allowed certain toxic behaviour from others to control me emotionally to some degree…

I never felt like I was fully in control of my emotions, but rather allowed people to treat me the way they wanted to, just to keep the peace.

I’m a very empathetic person… It’s my nature… in the past I would always try to please everyone before pleasing myself… and that would often be to the wrong people.

Writing Tøngue Tied was about me re-gaining my power and self-worth, as well as my healing process and journey.

Where and when did you record/produce? Who did you work with during recording/producing? Who did you work with during recording/producing?

My producer and close friend Brandon Jonak really helped me overcome a lot of insecurities and allowed me to express myself artistically.

I’ve worked with a number of producers in the past who have been controlling in some form or other – whether that be related to lyrics or melodies or whatever.

I remember I worked with one producer who constantly berated me… they would say things like “oh that was sh*t” or “why would you do that, that was absolute rubbish”- things that would really crush me as a song writer and artist. I ended up hating writing with this person as it was always about what they approved or didn’t and there was no sort of ‘collaboration’ between us but was all one sided.

When I first worked with Brandon, he sent me home with this random beat he had made 5 minutes before and said, “Do whatever you feel sounds good, then send it back when you finish”.

I remember ringing him literally the day after and was so anxious as to whether he was going to like it or complain about something and make me change it… I remember the first thing he said was “wow this is amazing Sophie…So this is the way we are going to work – I’ll do my thing, you do yours, no pressure, no stress, our creativity combined!”

From that moment on, I felt comfortable and able to really challenge myself and had finally the freedom to really create music that I loved.

Anyone who’s been in similar situations knows how important it is to have good dynamics between yourself and your collaborators.

Please tell us about how losing your hearing has affected you and how you are dealing with it:

Waking up one morning and completely losing your hearing in one ear without any previous health issues doesn’t really seem possible… but it happened, and I’m left with a completely and permanently deaf ear.

I didn’t think I would be able to continue music and there were a lot of obstacles I had to face.

A whole year later and it is what it is. I’ve come such a long way to heal and to accept what happened.

My whole lifestyle has changed because of this but it’s only given me more desire to want to help others.

Having a disability isn’t just about the physical aspect.

There’s the anxiety and depression to deal with, bullying, acceptance, rejection and much misunderstanding from people… it’s real and I’ve experienced it.

Because of my suffering, I feel I need to be a voice for those who are also experiencing and struggling with disabilities… and that is exactly what I’m going to do.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

At the moment I’m listening to a lot of house remixes. I go through weird stages where I’ll listen to a specific genre for a period of time and then get bored and go to another completely random genre.

Who or what influences your sound?

Jhene Aiko has been a massive influence. Her music, her lyrics, her persona, has helped me a lot in my personal growth.

She’s an artist I truly admire.

Doja Cat has influenced the Urban/Hip-hop sound that I’m now incorporating into my music.

What do you like to do away from music?

When I’m not doing music, I’m painting, I’m drawing, I’m learning a language. I’m a creative. I also have ADHD, so my mind constantly wanders, and I get more easily distracted than most, so I need to be doing something at all times.

Please tell us about your experience being an Australian with an Albanian Royal connection:

My family found out we were bloodline descendants of Albania’s national hero “Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg”, who is my 14th generation great grandfather, back in around 2011.

The importance of what this man stood for and his legacy didn’t really resonate with me at the time…I was growing up far from Europe, so culturally I was a bit naïve to say the least.

Now as time has passed and having visited Europe several times, I understand his role in European and Balkan history – I am incredibly proud and in awe of his achievements.

I’m so lucky to share his blood and I feel it’s my duty now, with my platform to really spread the word as to what a great man he was.

What’s planned for 2020?

Unfortunately, Covid-19 has really put a stop to a lot of things this year for me. I was planning to tour around Europe and perform at various places.

Right now, I’m continuing to write and produce more songs and see where life takes me.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

Vietnamese food… Hands down. Place to hang would probably be in the studio.

Beloved Aussie outfit Immigrant Union are dropping yet another blissful slice of psych-rock on the lofty new single ‘Soldier Field’, out today Friday 8 May. Dipping into the outfits’ renowned alt/folk/country tropes but with a healthy dose of psych, Immigrant Union’s latest offering rounds out a trifecta of easy listening tracks set to feature on their forthcoming third album Judas coming out midyear via Cheersquad Records & Tapes. ‘Soldier Field’ follows previous singles ‘New Win’ and ‘Jewels In The Sky’ in another dreamy melodic mantra that is at once introspective and cathartic. Featuring newcomers Ben Street and Paddy McGrath-Lester who join founding members Brent DeBoer (The Dandy Warhols), Bob Harrow and Peter Lubulwa following the Courtney Barnett-trio departure of ‘13, ‘Soldier Field’ presents some of the band’s most explorative sounds yet. Dreamy layers of guitar, a tinkling of chimes and a bubbling drone create a soft psychedelic undercurrent for Deboer’s tender lyricism to nestle upon as he recalls a time of great loss and the relief of coming out the other side in one piece. MONDO ROCK RELEASE SUMMER OF '81 (MONDO ROCK LIVE AT THE PIER)

MONDO ROCK RELEASE SUMMER OF ’81 (MONDO ROCK LIVE AT THE PIER)

by the partae May 11, 2020
written by the partae

In the summer of 1981, Ronald Reagan was sworn in as the US president, Dreamworld opened on the Gold Coast, and Trevor Chappell bowled his infamous underarm delivery against New Zealand. And Mondo Rock cemented their reputation as one of Australia’s finest bands, with the release of their album Chemistry. The album hit #3 on the Australian album chart, and saw the band win two awards at the Countdown Awards: Album Of The Year and Best Australia Songwriter (Eric McCusker).

In the lead up to the release of Chemistry, the summer of 1981 saw Mondo Rock play live at Victoria’s Pier Hotel. Now nearly four decades later, the band have made the recording of that show available as an album: Summer Of ’81 (Mondo Rock Live At The Pier). It’s the band’s first ever live album release, and it captures Mondo Rock at the peak of their powers. The Pier Hotel show was one of the first Mondo Rock gigs for drummer John James Hackett, who sadly passed away last year, and the release of Summer Of ’81 is a tribute to our dear friend JJ.

Ross Wilson says, “The Pier was packed every week, EON-FM was the new pumpin’ radio station and Mondo Rock was on the rise with hit singles on the charts and a new album on the horizon. We were hot & hungry and you can hear it on this album.”

Summer Of ‘81 includes all of the hits from Chemistry, including ‘State Of The Heart’, ‘Cool World’, ‘Chemistry’ and ‘Summer Of ‘81’, plus Mondo Rock classics ‘The Fugitive Kind’, ‘We’re No Angels’, and ‘Mondo Sexo’.

BECCA MANCARI Announces new album The Greatest Part Shares new single ‘First Time’

by the partae May 11, 2020
written by the partae

PRAISE FOR RECENT SINGLE ‘HUNTER’:

“Shimmering…pointillist…skittering…and serrated-edge.” – Rolling Stone

“Best New Songs” – NPR Music

“Akin to Cate Le Bon or Aldous Harding” – Consequence of Sound

“Ethereal” – BrooklynVegan

“Fluid and organic” – Nashville Scene

“It’s a hypnotic and atmospheric song that plays with elements of rock, psych, folk and more to create something very much of her own mold, something like a mix between Sharon Van Etten and St. Vincent” – We All Want Someone To Shout For

Today, Becca Mancari announces her new album The Greatest Part out June 26 via Captured Tracks / Remote Control, her first for the label. Along with the announcement, Mancari releases her second single, ‘First Time.’ The song is sonically upbeat but emotionally heavy, featuring a beautiful melody juxtaposed with its painful story. This follows the release of the album’s “shimmering” (Rolling Stone) first single ‘Hunter,’ which greeted traumas from her cult-like evangelical upbringing with vivid and unflinching melodies.

On the new single ‘First Time’ Mancari says, “‘First Time’ was a song that I did not at the time have the strength to write when I started, but as soon as the first line of the song came out of me I knew there was no going back. I came out years ago, but never really told my story. When touring people started coming up to me after shows to tell me their own stories of coming out and how hard it was for many of them to do so, I wanted to write a song that not only is my story, but also a story that many others share. I wrote it from the perspective of looking back at my younger self, asking her, ‘did you find your way out?’ I don’t think you have to be queer to relate to this story though. I think a lot of us have childhood pains that we carry into our adult lives, and my hope is that when you hear this song you feel less alone and that you do indeed find your way out.”

Produced by Paramore drummer Zac Farro, The Greatest Part marks a significant sonic evolution for the Nashville-based songwriter, expanding beyond the homespun rootsiness of her critically-acclaimed debut to incorporate a grittier, more experimental palette, one fueled by explosive percussion and fuzzed out guitars. The lyrics are similarly raw and intrepid here, peeling back old scars to explore the emotional and psychological turmoil Mancari weathered growing up gay in a fundamentalist Christian home, while at the same time examining the ties that continue to bind her to the family she loves. It’s that dichotomy, that friction between grief and joy, pain and forgiveness, sorrow and liberation, that lies at the heart of The Greatest Part, Mancari’s captivating new collection.

Mancari’s musicianship has been praised by NPR for its “exquisite self-awareness” and hailed as one of the year’s best by Rolling Stone, who applauds her “confident vocals [and] spacious, hazy production,” yet the The Greatest Part is her most vulnerable work to date. “This record was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to write,” says Becca Mancari. “At the same time, it was also the most freeing.” Though self-reflection is nothing new for Mancari, The Greatest Part finds her digging deeper than ever before, excavating new layers of her psyche in an effort to make sense of where she’s been, where she’s headed, and most importantly, who she’s become.

Born on Staten Island to an Italian/Puerto Rican family whose strict religious beliefs bordered on the cult-like, Mancari spent much of her childhood wrestling with issues of identity, belonging, and her sexaulity. After college, Mancari set out on her own, following the wind from Appalachia to Arizona, from south Florida to India, drifting in search of purpose and community. She eventually found both in East Nashville, where she garnered widespread acclaim for her strikingly honest songwriting and emotionally riveting performances.

This September, Mancari will open in North America for longtime musical collaborator Brittany Howard, whom she performed with as part of the supergroup Bermuda Triangle.

PURITY RING Share video for ‘stardew’ New album WOMB debuted #1 on Billboard Electronic Chart

by the partae May 11, 2020
written by the partae

Praise for WOMB

triple j Feature Album
Debuted #1 Billboard Electronic Chart

“WOMB is some of Purity Ring’s strongest work, a confident and singular statement from a band often imitated over the past decade.” – Pitchfork

“Wondrously dreamy as ever” – The Music, ★★★★

“Maybe the otherworldly sounds of Purity Ring are precisely what we need to escape into right about now.” – The FADER

“Their most beguiling to date; it’s a twisted comfort blanket of a record weaved with a wider variety of sonic textures than in the past.” – DAZED

“Brims with textured electro-pop as crystalline and vast as that of the band’s previous LPs.”
–
AV Club

“Purity Ring’s third album is a shimmering escape, and as good a self-isolation soundtrack as you’re likely to find – Loud & Quiet

“The pulsating track finds the band in search of respite in the midst of ever-changing chaos.” – Billboard on ‘stardew’

“Rarely has such booming sound felt so meditative…Just as the lyrics do, the dark fade reminds us to hold onto the words of people who care for us.” – Consequence of Sound on ‘peacefall’

Today, Purity Ring release the otherworldly video for ‘stardew’ directed by life-size stop motion artist Tobias Stretch with costumes created by Purity Ring’s Megan James. The track, which is off the duo’s recently released LP WOMB, was praised as “pulsating” by Billboard, a “crystalline rush of adrenaline” by The FADER and “a treat” by Consequence of Sound.

WOMB was triple j Feature Album upon release, debuted at #1 on the Billboard Electronic Albums chart and top 20 on seven Billboard charts. The ten songs are entirely written, recorded, produced and mixed by the duo of Megan James and Corin Roddick, and the album chronicles a quest for comfort and the search for a resting place in a world where so much is beyond our control.

WOMB follows Purity Ring’s 2012 internationally-acclaimed and highly influential debut Shrines and 2015’s another eternity. On another eternity, The New York Times praised the songs as “only a few steps removed from radio hits by singers like Ariana Grande and Ellie Goulding” while Rolling Stone called them “lustrous synth pop plus cavernous hip hop” and The New Yorker lauded the duo for “creat[ing] electro-pop that is as warm and human as it is cold and alien, an intoxicating combination that feels boldly futuristic.”

WOMB is available digitally, on CD and standard back vinyl via 4AD / Remote Control Records.

Punk rock supergroup Fake Names – which includes Brian Baker (Minor Threat, Dag Nasty, Bad Religion), Michael Hampton (S.O.A., Embrace, One Last Wish), Dennis Lyxzén (Refused), and Johnny Temple (Girls Against Boys, Soulside) - release their self-titled debut record.    LISTEN TO FAKE NAMES NOW In early 2016, Brian Baker and Michael Hampton met up at Hampton’s Brooklyn home to play some guitars and see “if anything shakes out”. Friends since first grade, the two guitarists ended up writing four songs that day, and closed out the session deciding to continue the collaboration and get a band together to play the songs live as soon as possible.   Baker and Hampton recruited Johnny Temple (another elementary school alumni) to play bass. Later that year while Baker and Temple were performing at Chicago’s Riot Fest, they ran into Refused frontman Dennis Lyxzén (also on the bill) and spontaneously asked if he’d be interested in joining their new band. To their amazement, he said yes. The band gelled, and they started to record music that winter.   Co-produced by Hampton and Geoff Sanoff (A Perfect Circle, Jawbox), Fake Names’ self-titled debut gives a nod to early UK Punk and Power Pop as well as the seminal groups from which the members emerged, yet remains modern and pertinent, with infectious melodies and vocal harmonies complementing Lyxzén’s heartfelt vocals and thought-provoking lyrics. Little Richard Dies At Age 87 – The ‘King And Queen’ Of Rock And Roll

by the partae May 10, 2020
written by the partae

Little Richard, the self-described “king and queen” of rock and roll and an outsize influence on everyone from Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie to Prince, died Saturday in Tullahoma, Tenn.

Bill Sobel, a lawyer for Little Richard, tells that the cause of death was bone cancer.

With his ferocious piano playing, growling and gospel-strong vocals, pancake makeup and outlandish costumes, Little Richard tore down barriers starting in the 1950s. That is no small feat for any artist — let alone a black, openly gay man who grew up in the South.

He was a force of nature who outlived many of the musicians he inspired, from Otis Redding to the late Prince and Michael Jackson. His peers James Brown and Otis Redding idolized him. Jimi Hendrix, who once played in Little Richard’s band, said he wanted his guitar to sound like Richard’s voice. The late David Bowie was 9 years old when he first saw Little Richard in a movie. “If it hadn’t have been for him, I probably wouldn’t have gone into music,” Bowie told Performing Songwriter magazine in 2003.  – Source NPR

Tensnake Reveals Second Single 'Somebody Else'
Festival NewsMusic News

TENSNAKE CHANNELS FURTHER L.A. INFLUENCE AS HE EDGES CLOSER TO NEW ALBUM ‘SOMEBODY ELSE’ FEAT. BOY MATTHEWS IS THE SECOND SINGLE TO DROP AHEAD OF THE SUMMER L.P.

Following on from his recent announcement and continuing to tease his new body of work, the ‘purveyor of feelgood dance’ Tensnake now releases his next pop and synth infused single  ‘Somebody Else’ on True Romance & Armada Electronic Elements.

It was Tensnake’s big reveal at the beginning of the year, a new forthcoming album entitled L.A. Now he cements the release with the second single ‘Somebody Else’, again showcasing his wide-ranging production abilities and further building in the influence he has received from recently living in the city of angels. It’s a track full of pop synths, sublime vocals and electric baselines. Destined for leading playlists across streaming and radio networks alike, featuring British, songwriter and vocalist Boy Matthews, who provides a fresh dimension and emotion to the track.

““Somebody Else” is probably my favourite song on the album. When Boy Matthews and I met in Los Angeles we instantly got along and the songwriting came very naturally together. I’d say it is also the song which reminds me the most of my time in Los Angeles; this city has such a nostalgic feel and I tried to capture that vibe in this song. There is a fair bit of retro style to the instrumental, but in combination with the modern vocals it sounds very fresh to me.” Tensnake on ‘Somebody Else’
Already with a strong reputation as an accomplished artist who treads the fine line, retaining underground kudos whilst simultaneously releasing crossover hits, Tensnake has cemented his status as a respected music producer with a proven track record. His first single of 2020 ‘Automatic’ a rework of the original Pointer Sister’s 1983 classic has already attracted critical acclaim, as well as generating impressive and ever-growing streaming numbers across all music platforms. With the new album tracks highlighting a shift from the dance music world to a newfound sound influenced by the L.A scene.

No stranger to successful collaborations, Tensnake has worked with the upper echelons of music including Nile Rogers, three-time Grammy award winner Stuart Price, Jamie Lidell, MNEK and Fiora to name but a few.

Set to follow in the same successful fashion as his previous first album Glow, Tensnake once again incorporates bags of pop appeal with a hint of his signature dance, disco and boogie style.

Sam Feldt keeps party going with his Sunday Sessions Dutch DJ decided to stay in contact with his fans by playing an exclusive set every Sunday

Sam Feldt has been providing a great service to his fans during these socially-distanced times thanks to his weekly Sunday Sessions live stream. These spontaneous DJ streams are broadcast simultaneously on Facebook, Twitch, YouTube, Twitter and Instagram and see the Dutch DJ explore a different style to his IRL DJ sets.

“I started hosting the Sunday Sessions as a creative outlet for myself” he explains. “Because I can’t play real live shows right now, I miss the art of mixing and experimenting behind the decks a lot. None of these sets are pre-planned and they rarely contain my own music, forcing me to be extra creative and constantly be on the lookout for the perfect next tune to play.” They are of a fluid length, from 30 minutes up to several hours, depending on his mood, and feature trippy visuals on a green screen behind Sam. He’s also building some professional decor for future streams.

His Sunday Sessions focus on melodic house and techno, with forays into the more hypnotic end of those sounds. “This is the music I love vibing out to on Sundays myself and doing these weekly streams gives me the ideal opportunity to share my personal favorites with the world. While they are nothing like the real live DJing experience, it offers me a way to connect with my fans virtually while breaking through genres and going out of my comfort zone playing records I don’t usually get to play.”

Sam has also been playing his own music during live streams at remarkable locations — including SLAM!’s broadcast from the top of the Euromast in Rotterdam, and for Spinnin’ Sessions (live and direct from his own kitchen!).

Tune in every Sunday afternoon on Sam’s channels.

Building his career around distinctly feel-good sound, Sam already has a double album and a multitude of top-selling releases under his belt. In 2020 he decided to take his career and his commitment to a more sustainable future one step further by launching his very own label: Heartfeldt Records. Sam’s quest to create a more social and sustainable dance music industry lead Heartfeldt Records to be the first record label with sustainability at the core of its mission. Very active with his Heartfeldt Foundation, Sam works hard at promoting a more sustainable lifestyle. This mission is a common thread across the Heartfeldt business chain: Heartfeldt Radio, Heartfeldt Events, and now Heartfeldt Records.
