Where are you currently based?  Rochester, NY How did you first start playing music?  My parents are both musicians so it was always around me and some of my first memories are at shows their shows. I think I realized I could sing when I was like maybe 4 and was alone yell-singing Four Non-Blondes’ “What’s Goin On” for 2 hours straight in my bed lol. First show ever, for no one. What's been happening recently? Gearing up to release our new EP, KOPYRIGHT! And also, social distancing.  Your single "U.G.L.Y" is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting for this track? We’ve always loved the idea of creating a song that’s super epic and chanty and has almost a cheerleader esce feel to it- and when we sat down to write Uggo we had that in mind for sure. I was a cheerleader myself (lol) and I wanted to really drive the point home with this one. How did you go about writing "U.G.L.Y."? We worked with producer AWWW who we know personally and have done some co-writing stuff with in the past. I recall we started writing the song in one session that was just two of us and producer, then we all went down to NYC probably a year later and finished the tune as a complete band- that’s when it really came together.  Where and when did you record/produce? NYC, AWWW’s studio space.  What programs/instruments did you use to record/produce? We are mostly an Ableton band. Sometimes Protools depending on who we are working with but definitely one of those. Huge fan of the DECAPITATOR plugin.  How has your COVID-19 experience been so far and how do you think it has affected artists? It’s been pretty shitty since we can’t play shows. Our live show is super important to who we are as a band (we do full band choreography etc.) so time not being able to plan anything around that has been very strange. I’m hoping post EP cycle that some sick new music will come out of it though since we can focus all our energy on that. I think a lot of artists are literally starving because of this- as a fan, definitely get out there and support your artists right now. They need it! Buy shit! What do you like to do away from music? I love to go out and dance, but that’s a huge part of KOPPS as a project as well. Some things totally disconnected from music would be my love of restoring old homes, reading, and doing anything outside in nature.  Who are you listening to at the moment? I’ve been on a Caroline Polachek kick for what seems like months but to be honest, I feel like the BLM movement has taken president over releases as of recently (which is a very good thing) and so I haven’t been consuming as much as usual.  What's planned for the remainder of 2020? Releasing our EP KOPYRIGHT on July 31, hopefully doing some online performances, and then it’s going to be focusing fully on writing for our first full-length album (unless we can suddenly tour during the pandemic, which I doubt.) Favourite food and place to hangout? Cheese in all of its magnificent forms. Mexican food is our fav as a band...& I will hang on any beach, anytime and feel very content.

Belgium techno powerhouse Amelie Lens returns with her third release on her celebrated imprint LENSKE. Hot on the heels of an explosive mix CD on fabric last November, her four-hour Essential Mix on BBC Radio 1 in April (the longest one since 1997) as well as a hit lockdown livestream, she delivers a hard-hitting EP entitled ‘Higher’ featuring her usual propensity for dark sounds and haunting vocals. Due to the current circumstances, she has unfortunately had to put on hold a summer full of festival appearances at the likes of Timewarp, Awakenings, Primavera Sound, Junction 2, Kappa Future, Sonus, and an extended tour with her Exhale curated parties with her own stage at Tomorrowland and OFFSonar, to name a few. This EP showcases Lens’ sound and energy while we wait to dance together again.  On the A side we have the euphoric title track, in which melodic synthwork and familiar vocal inflections echo into the far reaches of a cosmic dance floor. Next is ‘L’Obscurite’, which shocks with an hypnotic pulse, combining an appetite for the mystifying with sonic bleeps and booms. On the B side features an emotive sub-bass rework of ‘Higher’ by Berlin’s techno boyband FJAAK, swindling a multi-layered rave version. For the hungry ravers, this will be a fiery treat for the ears.  All tracks written & produced by Amelie Lens B remixed by FJAAK Mastered by Conor Dalton Cat. YOURS TRULY ANNOUNCE DEBUT ALBUM ‘SELF CARE’ + REVEAL NEW SINGLE ‘TOGETHER’ FULL ALBUM OUT SEPTEMBER 18 VIA UNFD

by the partae July 7, 2020
written by the partae

Australian pop-punk favourites Yours Truly have announced their debut album ‘Self Care’ will be released on Friday September 18, and revealed their latest single ‘Together’ today. After premiering via triple j‘s Good Nights on Monday night, ‘Together’ follows the band’s acclaimed recent single ‘Composure’ which continues to garner worldwide airplay at the likes of BBC R1, Kerrang! Radio, idobi, Music Choice and triple j/Unearthed.

After only a short few years on the scene – and out of high school for that matter – Yours Truly have earmarked themselves as one of Australia’s most striking rising stars. With tours alongside Sum 41 & Senses Fail, festival offers from the likes of Download UK, Riot Fest, Slam Dunk & Sad Summer and 8.5+ million streams on their recent EP ‘Afterglow‘ already under their belt, Self Care promises to be another breakout moment for the four-piece.

On new single ‘Together’, vocalist Mikaila Delgado says:

“Together is about feeling the stress and uneasiness of imposter syndrome. I had a lot of fear and anxiety coming into this album, having this expectation to exceed what we did with ‘Afterglow’. I remember telling myself ‘you need to write the best songs of your life’ and getting upset about the possibility of not being able to prove ourselves. One night I turned to Lachlan (Cronin, guitar) and said ‘I just feel all the colour has been drained from my brain’ and we both looked at each other with wide eyes, and that’s how the idea of ‘Together’ came about.”

About ‘Self Care’

‘Self Care’ finds Yours Truly unravelling the most momentous year of their lives. After the release of ‘Afterglow’ in April 2019, the band found themselves tackling incessant international touring and mounting imposter syndrome. Alongside all the usual challenges faced at 21; uni, retail jobs and breakups, the process of writing their debut album would prove daunting, yet the perfect antidote to the whirlwind they were living.

“There was this almost electric feeling of excitement about getting to sit down and write our first record but also a huge feeling of anxiety at the same time,” reflects vocalist Mikaila Delgado. “We didn’t want to release something and have people say that we’re actually not that good and weren’t worthy of all the success we were getting… it was like we all had imposter syndrome.”

The record’s namesake embodies the crux of what the album meant for the four-piece during their rapid ascension – a healing process, an overcoming of doubt – and would hopefully offer to its listeners.

“We really learnt and lived a lot in one year, and writing these songs allowed me to understand myself on a whole new level throughout it all,” Mikaila adds.

“The experience was a true form of self-care that ended with me feeling stronger, smarter, enlightened and positive after a rollercoaster of emotions. For me, this album was my version of soaking in vanilla candles and that comforting taste of chocolate and red wine under blankets. We hope it brings solace to whoever listens to it and can relate too.”

Yours Truly is
Mikaila Delgado (vocals)
Teddie Winder-Haron (guitar)
Lachlan Cronin (guitar)
Bradley Cronan (drums)

GLOWAL’s ‘Roda’ undergoes remix treatment from Musumeci, MUYLA on Sapiens

by the partae July 7, 2020
written by the partae

Agoria’s tastemaking Sapiens label returns with a fresh new EP that finds Mulya and Musumeci serve up remixes of Glowal’s ‘Roda’ from 2019, while a new Sweet Mix is also included in this fine trio of tracks.

Glowal is the duo of Italian producers Fabio Giannelli and Alessandro Gasperini, and in just 18 months they have turned out huge releases on Innervisions, Diynamic, TAU, Sapiens and many more. They have also played across Europe, India and the Middle East, went straight into the the No.1 position on Beatport’s Indie Dance charts with their single for Diynamic and merge stirring atmospherics, contagious rhythms and emotive vocals to create a unique sonic identity.

Hungarian artist Mulya goes first and again shows his ability to create vibes which really make their mark having done so on the likes of Multinotes and Monaberry before now. He reworks that track into tense and high pressure rolling house track with lush melodies and tight drums. The vocals ring out up top with a real sense of soul and the whole thing builds towards a great crescendo. It’s majestic and emotive from start to finish so sure to cast a real spell on the floor.

Next comes a Sweet Mix that is laced with indie guitars and shimmering vocal effects. The sweeping track lifts you off your feet and keeps you in a trance thanks to its glowing pads.

Last of all, Musumeci steps up. He is a Sicilian artist with 20 years experience on labels like Innervisison and Connaisseur and here serves up a driving cut with disco tinged arps and synth sequences layered over warm, rubbery drums. It’s a track that reaches for the skies and glides smoothly into the future.

This is a fantastic package that brings new life to this vital track on Sapiens.

Zachary Leo set to release ‘Feels’, the title track from his upcoming EP

by the partae July 6, 2020
written by the partae
‘Zachary Leo’ is a bold blend of funk, rock, and soul from Melbourne based artist Zachary Leo Gulavin. Written and produced from his home in the South East, his songs speak of heartbreak, self-destruction, and love, taking musical inspiration from the likes of Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jamiroquai, and the early works of Maroon 5. His musical mixture of guitars, organs, keys, and exciting bass lines is backed by a powerful vocal described by Triple J’s Nkechi Anele to be “criminal how good it is”.

2019 marked the first year of ‘Zachary Leo’ with the 21-year-old releasing just two singles, ‘Lay You Down’ and ‘She’ both recorded by Emmy award-winning Engineer Guus Hoevanaars. Gulavin (Zachary Leo) has since taken full control of the recording process, both engineering and producing all his new material (including his new single ‘Feels’ and upcoming EP) out of numerous studios around Melbourne.

The funk-rock singer/songwriter has also been honing his live performance with his exciting 5-piece act supporting some amazing Australian bands last year including Thirsty Merc, Pacific Avenue and Port Royal as well as selling out his 2019 debut single launch at The Grace Darling Hotel.

The multi-instrumentalist has now been writing and recording since December and is set to release ‘Feels’, the first single off his upcoming EP of the same name on August 14th. ‘Feels’ will be one of 2 singles off the Extended-Release set to hit Streaming services as well as a limited Vinyl run on November 13th.

Joel Corry teams up with MNEK for new single 'Head & Heart' Follows platinum-selling breakout singles 'Sorry' & 'Lonely'
Music News

Joel Corry teams up with MNEK for new single ‘Head & Heart’

by the partae July 6, 2020
written by the partae

Fresh off the back two Platinum records and an extraordinary breakthrough 12 months, Joel Corry has teamed up with MNEK on anthemic new single, ‘Head & Heart’, which is available across all DSPs now here.

Joel first broke through last summer with ‘Sorry’ – a thumping re-work of Monsta Boy’s UKG classic of the same name – which spent 10 weeks in the UK Top 10, peaking at #6, and broke Shazam’s all-time daily record in the UK after receiving over 41,000 tags in one 24-hour period last July.

He followed that up with the release of ‘Lonely’ in January, which went on to peak at #4 on the OCC and spend a mammoth 11 weeks of its own inside the UK Top 10, firmly marking him out as the UK’s biggest breakout dance producer of the last 12 months.

New single ‘Head & Heart’ sees Joel collaborate with Grammy-winning singer-songwriter MNEK for the first time to zero in on a classic house sound anchored in its smooth tones, warm, glossy chords and feel-good, infectious lyricism. Listen here.

As a DJ, Joel also toured extensively across throughout 2019 and early 2020, as well as making his debut at Capital’s Jingle Bell Ball and Top Of The Pops’ Christmas Day & New Year specials alongside the likes of Lewis Capaldi, Freya Ridings and Stormzy. He headed out on his first ever headline Australian Tour in January and supported both Sigala and Jax Jones on their UK Tours in February, while also turning in official remixes for the likes of Stormzy (‘Own It’ ft. Ed Sheeran & Burna Boy), Wiley, Aitch, Sigala and Ella Eyre over the last six months.

About Joel Corry

From winning titles with body building to being a TV star, and having his own show at Kiss FM, it’s safe to say Joel Corry has already had an extensive career, yet he’s only getting started. In 2019 ‘Sorry’ happened. Upon release it exploded, becoming rinsed in clubs and on daytime FM radio, getting signed to Atlantic, and on one day last summer breaking the record for the most Shazamed track in a 24 hour period with a staggering 41,000 tags.

He’s now setting his sights on making an album and landing bookings at the world’s biggest festival stages. “I grew up in clubs and still get the same buzz now playing in front of crowds that I did 15 years ago,” he says, “when I get in that zone, all the other things in my life seem to go away.” Joel Corry has devoted his life to dance music, and he’s still got a whole lot more life to give.

MATHAME – ‘NEVER GIVE UP’ (DIPLO REMIX) B1 RECORDINGS / MINISTRY OF SOUND Following their latest single ‘Never Give Up’ which was awarded ‘The Essential New Tune’ accolade by BBC Radio 1’s Pete Tong, Italian brothers Mathame announce the next remix for the track. Released today via ‘B1 Recordings / Ministry Of Sound’, ‘Never Give Up’ (Diplo Remix) is now available to stream and purchase. Diplo’s rework is the third official remix for the track, following the previously released remixes from Vril and Lost Frequencies.    An almost impossible feat to summarize all of Diplo’s projects and achievements, the Los Angeles-based producer, DJ and songwriter has worked with a momentous list of artists including Beyoncé, Shakira, M.I.A, Snoop Dogg, Madonna and many more. Also the co-creator of dancehall project Major Lazer, a member of the supergroup LSD with Sia and Labrinth, along with founding Jack Ü with Skrillex and forming Silk City with Mark Ronson in 2018, most recently, Diplo released his new country album titled ‘Diplo Presents Thomas Wesley Chapter 1: Snake Oil’. Crossing over into the underground circuit to collaborate with artists such as Paul Woolford and Blond:ish in 2019/20, Diplo’s remix of ‘Never Give Up’ is a further demonstration of his remarkably diverse ability to create global chart-topping hits and also club-focused productions.  Over recent years, electronic duo Mathame have established themselves as one of underground music’s most promising rising acts. Released in March via ‘B1 Recordings / Ministry Of Sound’, ‘Never Give Up’ continues to receive an ever-growing stream of support, already fostered from industry leaders including BBC Radio 1’s Pete Tong who awarded their earlier release on Tale Of Us’ ‘Afterlife’, ‘For Every Forever’ their first ‘Essential New Tune’.  “Musically, ‘Never Give Up’ has many influences, from techno to cinematic soundtracks and sound design. We try to synthesise all our influences into one track that can be like a manifesto of our sound, dynamic, wider, handcrafted, dreaming, with a simple and strong message. A message to the earth, like a flag that calls everyone to not ever give up. The track arrives at the time of a global crisis where it feels like everything is out of our hands and we have lost control. Now more than ever, the planet earth and humanity need this message, every day and every night.” – Mathame Forming in 2013, brothers Amedeo and Matteo Giovanelli have progressively become an integral part of the underground electronic scene, first releasing on Vaal’s ‘Bastaard’ label in 2015. Followed up with a further EP on Tiefschwarz’s revered ‘Souvenir’ in 2017, their activity arguably culminated at its peak in a release for Tale Of Us’ ‘Afterlife’ label in 2018, featuring tracks ‘Nothing Around Us’ and ‘Fade Into You’.   2019 proved to be a breakthrough year for the duo, with an international touring schedule spanning Stockholm, Abu Dhabi, Milan, Istanbul and more, highlighted by a performance for French video platform Cercle, filmed at the summit of Mexico City’s Reforma 180 Heliport. With the Cercle stream currently amassing over 2 million views, Mathame have also worked with fellow Italian duo and close friends, Tale Of Us. The last two years have seen Mathame become residents for their ‘Afterlife’ event series, performing at showcases from Mexico to Ibiza.    Bridging the gap between the underground and mainstream, Mathame have continued to showcase their prowess as producers, remixing for the Grammy-nominated live electronic act RÜFÜS DU SOL, along with providing an anthemic rework of MEDUZA’s ‘Lose Control’.    Continuing their unstoppable momentum across the new decade, Mathame recently launched their new multiplatform cinematic project, PHOENIX. The interdisciplinary brothers have innovated PHOENIX as an online stage and interactive space for both artists and music lovers. Using the latest 3D real-time technologies, PHOENIX has hundreds of different settings where DJ’s and musicians can perform in outlandish scenarios and backgrounds. Diplo Remixes Mathame’s ‘Never Give Up’ | Following Remixes From Vril & Lost Frequencies, ‘Never Give Up’ (Diplo Remix) Is Out Now

MATHAME – ‘NEVER GIVE UP’ (DIPLO REMIX)
B1 RECORDINGS / MINISTRY OF SOUND

Following their latest single ‘Never Give Up’ which was awarded ‘The Essential New Tune’ accolade by BBC Radio 1’s Pete Tong, Italian brothers Mathame announce the next remix for the track.

Now more than ever, the planet earth and humanity need this message, every day and every night.” – Mathame

Forming in 2013, brothers Amedeo and Matteo Giovanelli have progressively become an integral part of the underground electronic scene, first releasing on Vaal’s ‘Bastaard’ label in 2015.

DMA’S

ANNOUNCE EXCLUSIVE ‘UNPLUGGED & INTIMATE’
SYDNEY SHOWS – JULY/AUGUST 2020
TICKETS ON SALE FRIDAY 10 JULY

NEW ALBUM THE GLOW OUT FRIDAY

Frontier Touring, I OH YOU and Secret Sounds are thrilled to announce the return of 4x ARIA-nominees and critically acclaimed Sydney trio DMA’S – performing six ‘Unplugged & Intimate’ dates across three nights at Sydney’s Factory Theatre in July/August 2020. The newly announced shows come in celebration of the band’s hugely anticipated third studio album, THE GLOW – released this Friday 10 July via I OH YOU.

Having performed a sold out show at London’s iconic 5,000 capacity O2 Academy Brixton before the world went into lockdown, these new dates are DMA’S first gigs in many months, with local fans scoring the chance to be the very first in the world to witness the band’s latest material live on stage.

In such a challenging time for Australia’s music industry, DMA’S wanted to support a Sydney venue – one they grew up down the road from. And so, DMA’S will perform two shows per night (in a reduced capacity and stripped-back mode) at Sydney’s Factory Theatre on Thursday 30 July, Friday 31 July, and Saturday 1 August. Frontier, I OH YOU and Secret Sounds are working closely with the Factory Theatre to ensure COVID-19 safety standards are met for these concerts. A changeover period will occur between each concert to allow for cleaning of the venue.

Says The Factory’s Sam Nardo: “We are absolutely thrilled to be opening our doors for such a special series of gigs with the DMA’S. This is a one-off opportunity that will no doubt be relished by fans who have waited a long time to get out there to support Aussie music and it’s simply great to be a part of it.”

An exclusive Artist Pre-sale for these shows will be made accessible from noon AEST on Wednesday 8 July (see here for details) for fans who purchase a $9.99 bundle, which includes a digital download of THE GLOW and a signed poster. All profits from this bundle will be donated to the Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS), who do great work fighting for the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island people in NSW and ACT.

Frontier and Secret Sounds Members will be able to access a Members Pre-sale from 2pm AEST on Wednesday 8 July, before General Public tickets go on sale on Friday 10 July (12pm AEST).

If you caught DMA’S stunning performance of the Crowded House classic ‘Better Be Home Soon’ on Music From The Home Front on Anzac Day, you’ll have gotten a glimpse of the sonic beauty fans can expect from these upcoming performances.

The band’s new album THE GLOW is on track for monumental success, both here in Australia and in the UK, the album was recorded and mixed by Grammy-winning producer Stuart Price (The Killers, New Order, Madonna). First single ‘Silver’ was voted #20 in triple j’s Hottest 100 of 2019 (their 6th consecutive year in the countdown), and DMA’S fastest streaming song to date with 8.5 million+ streams. Huge follow-up song ‘Life Is A Game Of Changing’ was premiered by UK’s Radio 1 in January, also scoring ‘Record Of The Week’ on Radio X. More recently, the band performed a stunning take of the album’s title number on The State Of Music, while just released fan track ‘Learning Alive’ has exploded online, earning coverage from Rolling Stone AU, DORK, NME and Consequence Of Sound.

An anthemic pop album that sees the band fulfil their world-class potential, UK music bible Q Magazine recently scored THE GLOW 4/5, describing it as “Triumphant… DMA’S aspirations are elite-class”.

Their latest record follows on from DMA’S 3-x ARIA nominated 2018 album For Now (which debuted at #7 on the ARIA Album Chart and #13 on the Album Chart in the UK), and debut album Hills End (which featured ARIA Platinum single ‘Delete’ and ARIA Gold singles ‘Lay Down’ and ‘Step Up The Morphine’).

One thing is for sure: DMA’S put on one hell of a show. With these special shows, tickets will not last long, so get in quick!

HACHIKU releases 99 Dreams EP, featuring a new cover of The Cranberries ‘Dreams’

by the partae July 6, 2020
written by the partae
Hachiku aka German-Australian bedroom producer Anika Ostendorf compiles her recent series of ‘isolation covers’ with the release of the 99 Dreams EP, featuring a new cover of The Cranberries classic ‘Dreams’, out now on Milk! Records / Remote Control.

Ostendorf decided to use her recent free time to work on her Ableton skills, “Besides gardening, doing 4 years of tax returns, Skyping friends I didn’t even remember by name and fermenting, I’ve been trying to utilise all this free time to expand my musical production vocabulary and learn how to use production software Ableton – the challenge to myself is to record one cover a week trying to incorporate some sort of production technique I wouldn’t usually try with my own songs.”

The first fruit of this project was an inspired cover of Sia’s ‘Chandelier’ which rode the wave of triple j’s Unearthed’s #Covered19 hashtag. It was followed by a version of Nena’s 80’s hit ’99 Luftballons’ sung in Ostendorf’s native tongue of German and premiered on 3RRR’s Local and/or General.

The final cover of the project, a faithful rendition of The Cranberries’ ‘Dreams’ has been a long-time favourite in Hachiku’s live set – most recently seeing audiences sing-a-long on her US tour in January and February supporting Courtney Barnett.

Where are you currently based? I'm so lucky to have been born and raised in BC, and I currently live in Vancouver on the unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil Waututh nations.  How did you first start playing music? My mom swears that I loved music in utero and kicked along to my favourite tracks, and I was singing as soon as I could talk. I think I was around 10 months old in my carseat on a drive with my mom, and she was listening to My Heart Will Go On by Celine Dion. Apparently, I was singing along—we'll use the term "singing" loosely. But it's always been something I've done for as long as I can remember.  What's been happening recently? That's a big question. At the start of 2020, I was thinking mostly about my excitement for music and all the songs I was working on. Obviously, the past 6 months were not something I predicted. COVID threw me for a loop in terms of my release planning, especially as I was starting to play more live shows in the city. And, most importantly, the long overdue spotlighting of systemic injustice and white supremacy (including in the music industry) has given me some pause. I've been doing a lot of reading, listening, and discussing—particularly about Canada and the US's histories, and how race-based inequity and violence manifest today—while simultaneously crafting intentional plans about how I'd like to show up as a white artist.  You've recently signed with 604 Records, how did this come about and how has the experience been so far? I feel so lucky to be a part of the 604 team. Two summers ago, I quit my full-time office job to pick up contract gigs and pursue music. I went to this music conference in Victoria, BC, feeling total imposter syndrome, and I met Louise Burns (a producer and artist with 604 Records). We started writing and recording together and she was instantly such a mentor and advocate for me. I did another songwriter's workshop about a year later where I met Kevvy (also a producer and artist with 604). Together, Kevvy and Louise pulled me aside and said: "We have a plan for you." We started writing together, and then I got the opportunity to do a demo deal with 604 Records last fall. Those tracks were shared with the whole team, and then I was offered a record deal. Kevvy and Louise have been instrumental in my growth and confidence as an artist.  The experience has been a dream, honestly. Before signing, I was concerned that "record deal" would be synonymous with "loss of creative independence." In fact, every single person I've worked with at 604—Kevvy and Louise and Jonathan and others—have supported my vision so fully and only enhanced my artistry. Being in the studio is like dropping into an alternate universe where time is non-linear, there are endless snacks and weird inside jokes, and we just get to try things out and make beautiful music.  You have a new single 'Tarot' out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting for this track? I love pop music that is emotionally intelligent, and simultaneously catchy yet lyrically dense. Tarot is an electro-pop song, and at the time of writing it I was listening to a lot of Maggie Rogers, Janelle Monae, and The Japanese House.  How did you go about writing Tarot? I was messing around on my new MIDI keyboard and trying to gain proficiency with Garageband. I don't usually write first thing in the morning but I remember being semi-sleepy and laying down a more R&B-influenced beat, usually those vocal "mm, mmhmm"s as part of it. Usually, songs start for me with a few lyric lines that somehow emerge in my brain. I thought of the first two lines: "It's something about energy, position of the moon / I need a way to justify unwelcome thoughts of you" and that set the theme of the song.  Where and when did you record and who with? I recorded the unfinished song as a rough demo in my very DIY home studio (aka bedroom with a laptop). I sent it to Kevvy and Louise, and we finished it off between Kevvy's home studio and the studio at 604 Records. Kevvy kept elements from the original demo, which I love!  What did you find most challenging and rewarding throughout the creative process? Finishing what I've started. I loved coming up with ideas, but then I don't always see them through. I have a lot of half-finished songs on my computer.  You also have an upcoming album on the way, what can we expect? I do! You can expect a few more singles later this year that expand my sound. I see Tarot sitting perfectly next to Flux, my first independent release—they feel like musical siblings. Some of the other singles build off of these and feel even bigger, with more harmonies and more instrumentation.   What do you like to do away from music? I work for a couple nonprofits part time locally, so I do that. I always want to be outside and do fun things with people I love, so lots of family dinners and bike rides and park hangouts with friends and hiking.  Who are you listening to at the moment? I rediscovered Tierra Whack's record, Whack World, and I've been into that. I'm just digging into HAIM's new record, Women in Music Pt. III.  What's planned for the remainder of 2020? Some COVID-safe travel locally. I get to spend some time at a cabin with my family, so we'll do lots of swimming and lounging and likely some competitive games of Spikeball. I'm going on a seven-day canoe trip with a friend at the end of the month. Once I'm back, I hope to plan some smaller, intimate outdoor shows throughout the remainder of summer and fall. I'm also starting to write again, so I'd like to carve out some time to lay down tracks—maybe somewhere outside of the city.  Favourite food and place to hangout? I love almost all food and I have a huge appetite. That feels like the hardest question to answer. Lately, I've been wanting sushi if I'm going to indulge in takeout. I also love spreads—is there a better way to describe them? Like a board of cheese, hummus, olives, some crackers, bread, veggies. My favourite place to hang out is anywhere outside with a view of the mountains and the Pacific ocean.  Instagram | Facebook | Twitter @michaelaslinger www.michaelaslinger.com

Where are you currently based?

I’m so lucky to have been born and raised in BC, and I currently live in Vancouver on the unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil Waututh nations.

How did you first start playing music?

HENRY GREEN UNVEILS STUNNING SOPHOMORE ALBUM ‘HALF LIGHT’ [OUT NOW ON AKIRA RECORDS]

by the partae July 4, 2020
written by the partae

Having released a string of stunning ambient indietronica throughout 2020, including ‘Realign’, ‘Fabric’, ‘Tide’, and more recently ‘All’, today, Bristol based musician Henry Green releases his highly anticipated sophomore album ‘Half Light’ on Akira Records. Written, produced, and sung by Green himself, the album is delicately balanced throughout, whilst featuring some standout performances from UK singer-songwriter Andreya Triana and Canadian artist Ghostly Kisses.

The 9 track LP penned over the course of five months is a beautifully intimate, and honest telling of Green’s own vulnerabilities, and how he has faced those challenges head on, sharing “the album was the result of struggle; ongoing issues with self confidence and self expression, and a feeling that I was incapable of making the music I was imagining. Ultimately, ‘Half Light’ feels like a collection of songs that needed to happen, an obstacle that needed to be overcome.”

Listen to “Half Light” here: https://orcd.co/halflight

Having left Bristol in early 2019 to settle down in a sleepy Wiltshire village, the electronic artist and producer wrote and recorded the album in his attic studio in six months. Reflecting on the experience today, the 24-year-old cites the decision to take on all production duties himself as just one of many causes of stress. “I’ve always produced my own stuff to some extent, but I took it too far the other way. And when you spend so much time on your own and have these two conflicting sides in your head, it’s just a constant battle. And then you have these sobering moments when you realise that people are actually listening to your music…”

In some respects, Green was justified in being intimidated by the weight of expectation. Following the successes of his EPs Slow (2015) and Real (2017), and his debut album Shift (2018), he’s racked up more than 90 million collective streams across platforms, and has won the respect of his peers, including former tour-mates London Grammar and Nick Mulvey, and recent remixers Cyril Hahn and Harvey Causon. And yet, their faith is ultimately repaid with ‘Half Light’, a record that finds Green harnessing that initial crisis of confidence to create music that’s both emotionally honest and breaks new ground.

“A lot of the songs are about that struggle to express,” he explains. “Coming into the record I wanted to make something that was a separation from myself, and didn’t feel like such a window into my feelings. But because of my feelings throughout the process I think these are the most honest songs I’ve ever written.”

While tonally intimate, many of the arrangements on ‘Half Light’ are more expansive than anything Green has attempted previously. “I’m always trying to counteract live instruments with something completely synthetic,” Green says of the process. “I like the idea of having something recognisable at the heart of a track, and then everything around it can be ear candy, mangled or manipulated. But at the heart of every track there needs to be something that the listener can identify with.”

Named after the Japanese idiom which describes the calm before a momentous event, “Yoyuu” blossoms out of transcendent strings and reflects the space of Green’s new, bucolic surroundings. Meanwhile, the fluttering percussion and shimmering synth textures of cinematic lead single “Realign” brings to mind the work of Christian Löffler or Bonobo, both of whom remain key influences in terms of production, alongside long-time vocal reference points RY X and Mike Milosh of Rhye.

For “Tide“, Green secured a guest turn from another one of his singing heroes, Bonobo and Flying Lotus-collaborator Andreya Triana, while “Idle” features Canadian artist Ghostly Kisses, his label mate at Akira. Alongside strings and a saxophone player, these were the only outside contributors, bar mixing engineer Tristan Hoogland.

With trademark self-deprecation, Green still very much regards ‘Half Light’ as a document of his learning process, and that’s ultimately reflected in the choice of title. “I almost wanted to hint that this album is a transitional thing,” he explains. “The half light is a lyric in the first verse I wrote for the album, and I love that idea that you’re not fully standing in the sunlight. You’re not yourself and you’re slightly in the dark in your mind, but you know that you still have something to give… So the overriding feeling that I hope people get from [Half Light] is that it’s a defiant record.”

Henry Green’s sophomore album ‘Half Light’ is out now on Akira Records.

'Half Light' track list: 1. All 2. Tide (feat. Andreya Triana) 3. Fabric 4. Sunlight 5. Yoyuu 6. Realign 7. Idle (feat. Ghostly Kisses) 8. Between Us 9. More

The aftermovie is now complete and comes with a soothing soundtrack as well as stunning visual that places you in the heart the Ong Jmal desert in Tunisia. Drones fly over the village and show up the two different stages, with thematic production amongst the palm trees, dunes and craggy rocks, ancient architecture and wandering camels. You’re given glimpses of the day time and night time dancing, snippets of sets from 30 Tunisian and international DJs who take turns to play across the 40 hours of non stop partying.
The force was throughout across two days and two nights with thousands of smiles exchanged, a human adventure beyond borders. The team would like to say a huge thank you to all who came from the four corners of the world, and thank the artists for their energy and the special partners who made it all possible.

Dunes Electroniques will be back once again, but for now, get lost in the aftermovie below

It has been some time in the making but things fall into place for a reason and today, Adelaide’s Wing Defence unleash their debut EP, Friends. A fitting name for this duo’s offering, the Friends EP is a great look at the connection between these songwriters and musicians and their growth as creatives.   Since their debut release ‘Stuck’ back in 2018, Wing Defence quickly became one of Adelaide’s most exciting new exports, winning praise at BIGSOUND, Groovin’ The Moo and Laneway Festivals, as well as on stages supporting the likes of Polish Club, The VANNS and more. With SA Music Awards, a deal with European label Dock 7 and acclaim from national radio and online outlets under their belt, the early chapter for Wing Defence was a strong one.   The six track EP, featuring previously released songs in ‘Relocate’, ‘Weapons’, ‘Hindsight’ and ‘Listerine’, smacks with bright pop-punk energy, putting Skye Walter and Paige Court’s talents as storytellers front and centre. A record of maturing, learning through experience and growth, Wing Defence are united as ever in creating music that represents all facets of themselves. The tracks on the EP came together across a number of different sessions in different locations in Adelaide, with Wing Defence working with the likes of Mario Späte (Montaige, Jess Kent) and their own guitarist, Benny Tamblyn-Morrow and engineers Wade Keighran and Rick O’Neill (Silverchair, You Am I, Powderfinger). Musically, the EP dips in and out with its tone placement. There are moments of reflection (‘Relocate’), moments of bright hope (‘Bob’) and moments of rawness (‘Silence’) that cover their presented emotional spectrum with great care.   “Wing Defence seemed to form at a time when all of us were facing a huge crossroad in our lives and needed to find refuge. Needed to find friendship and laughter in the hard times. We needed to make light of our common struggles and lift each other up. Through this, we found really strong friendships, hence the EP titled ‘Friends’. The entire EP really developed and became one huge counselling session!” Wing Defence   This sense of friendship and community between Wing Defence and their circle has been brought together in making the music video for their recent single, ‘Relocate’. Created and produced by the band themselves, the video serves as a journal of time spent together in studio, onstage and off - a great memory board. “As we were reflecting on our EP, Friends, getting prepared for release, we got all nostalgic, looking back on where we’d come from and wanted to venture back to our roots. Given the state of the world, we know so many people are resonating with that feeling of good times they’ve had with their friends, remembering those silly times, when things were different and we wanted to capture that for ourselves too.” Wing Defence PRAISE FOR WING DEFENCE   “...a way of creating uniquely memorable phrases full of Australiana and wit.” Triple J Unearthed, Tommy Faith   “Plenty of hooks but the whole way through, it bubbles away slowly and keeps a little in the tank, which works nicely.” Triple J, Declan Byrne   “There’s not much to say about Wing Defence beyond the fact they are brilliant, new and incredibly exciting…” Laundry Echo   “Each release from Wing Defence is lyrically earnest and buoyed by the steady pace and lush organic production…” City Mag ‘Friends’ is out now!  Facebook | YouTube | Twitter | Instagram | Triple J Unearthed

Statement from Untitled Group It is with a heavy heart that we must announce the cancellation of all upcoming events at The Drive-In.  Unfortunately the current COVID-19 outbreaks in Victoria that have sent many hotspot areas (within close proximity to our venue) into lockdown have prevented the safe execution of this event. The safety of our patrons, staff and artists is our top priority and after consulting with various experts and officials this tough, but necessary decision was made.  Further to immediate health concerns, the possibility of artists being able to travel interstate is becoming increasingly uncertain and in some cases is now impossible. We want to particularly thank everyone who bought a ticket & supported our endeavour to keep the music industry alive during these testing times. The Drive-in was set to create over 250 jobs per event & inject over $2 million dollars into a much suffering sector of our economy and we are devastated with this outcome.  We are keeping our heads held high, and will redirect our focus towards summer festivals with optimism. REFUNDS: All ticket purchasers will receive an email from Oztix on Monday the 6th of July which will provide further details on the refund process. We look forward to having a dance together this summer.

Statement from Untitled Group

It is with a heavy heart that we must announce the cancellation of all upcoming events at The Drive-In.

REFUNDS:

All ticket purchasers will receive an email from Oztix on Monday the 6th of July which will provide further details on the refund process.

We look forward to having a dance together this summer.
