Davey Lane
Wednesday 15th July, 8pm

Join us (online) tonight, Wednesday July 15th as we live stream Davey Lane, direct from the Cherry stage! We’re delivering sensational performances every week whilst the COVID battle continues, beamed out from the live music capital of the world…

With a now two decades on lead guitar for You Am I along with fronting neo-mod rockers The Pictures, Davey Lane should need no introduction. Outside of these vital contributions, he remains an in-demand mercenary for local and international greats the like of Crowded House, Jimmy Barnes, Todd Rundgren, Vika & Linda Bull, Robyn Hitchcock, The Saints and one off supergroups such as The Wrights. Collaborative efforts that assist in the development of his craft, Davey continues to display a knack for true pop sensibilities, big choruses and a surreal turn of phrase.

Taking time out from the studio finalising 3rd LP “Don’t Bank Your Heart On It”, this performance is not to be missed!

WIDOWSPEAK Share new single ‘Plum’ New album Plum out August 28

by the partae July 15, 2020

Past praise for Widowspeak

“Widowspeak fuses lightness and darkness like few others.” – NPR

“Romances, lives, cities, worlds — Widowspeak’s songs contemplate their erosion with a dazed acceptance and music that keeps opening up new spaces.” – New York Times

“Every Widowspeak record is exceptionally intimate.” – AV Club

“Widowspeak take bits and pieces of rock, folk, and country history to make a pop Americana sound that feels antique.” – Pitchfork

“Optimistic-feeling swirl of twangy, textured guitars and dreamy-as-hell vocals” – The FADER

“Rich and atmospheric…speaking to the restlessness of human existence”  – KEXP

“Widowspeak take the best parts of folk and shoegaze and twist them together” – Stereogum

Today Widowspeak share the title track from their upcoming album Plum, to be released August 28 via Captured Tracks / Remote Control. On ‘Plum‘, the duo – singer-songwriter Molly Hamilton and guitarist Robert Earl Thomas – reflect on the Japanese philosophy, Wabi-Sabi, that celebrates the way things are rather than how they should be. As the seemingly perfect fruit begins to rot throughout the video, Hamilton comes to the sanguine recognition that nothing lasts, nothing is finished, and nothing is perfect as she sings “no one is old, nothing is young.”

Molly Hamilton on ‘Plum‘: “I wrote “Plum” about wanting to be more comfortable and casual with thoughts I tend to avoid.  Especially when I’m feeling very out-of-step with the world, there’s no use in being nostalgic for “the end of an era” or being afraid of what could happen. But, avoiding the present is kind of my default. I’m trying to be more aware that everyone is on its own trajectory, in its own time, slowly becoming something or becoming nothing.”

This follows the release of the album’s first two singles ‘Breadwinner,’ a track “as spare and breathy and beautiful as anything they’ve released” (Stereogum), and ‘Money‘ that “features hypnotically repeating riffs, shimmering guitars” (Paste). Watch the duo perform both singles plus fan favorites on Relix’s “Remote Sessions” here.

On Plum, Widowspeak continue to expand on the shared visions they’ve explored across five albums, delving deeper into what was always there: dusty guitars, ear-worm melodies, warm expansive arrangements.  In the decade since forming they’ve garnered praise from top outlets, with The New York Times saying “…their music keeps opening up new spaces” and NPR noting the duo’s ability to “fuse lightness and darkness like few others.” Recorded over a handful of weekends last winter by Sam Evian (Cass McCombs, Kazu Makino, Hannah Cohen) at his Flying Cloud studio in the Catskills, and mixed by Ali Chant (PJ Harvey, Aldous Harding, Perfume Genius), Plum was finished up just as the start of spring signaled something, everything was changing. With its release, Widowspeak have brought something into the world that seems to know its own worth, even as it wonders aloud about what is to come.

Katy Perry joins Tomorrowland Around the World, the digital festival, line-up

by the partae July 14, 2020
written by the partae

July 14, 2020 – Global pop superstar Katy Perry will perform a spectacular and unprecedented show at Tomorrowland Around the World, the digital festival. One of the best-selling musical artists of all time, Katy will dazzle the People of Tomorrow across the globe in an eye-popping visual spectacle full of special effects, delivering a breath-taking show of her greatest hits which shaped 21st century pop music as well as brand new music from her fifth album, “Smile,” which is set to be released on August 14.

Tomorrowland Around the World brings together more than 60 of the planet’s most prominent artists in electronic dance music on 8 different stages, and as Tomorrowland now teams up with Katy Perry, the worlds of electronic dance music and pop will collide in one of the most spectacular ways possible. The global chart-dominating American singer has previously worked together on songs with world class DJs and producers Zedd and Calvin Harris, while her iconic tracks (“I Kissed A Girl,” “Teenage Dream,” “Firework,” “Roar,” “Dark Horse”, and more) have been remixed by some of dance music’s top producers, including Tiësto, Oliver Heldens, R3HAB, Kaskade, Tommie Sunshine, Benny Bennassi, and many more.

In her 12 years with Capitol, Katy has racked up a cumulative 40 billion streams alongside worldwide sales of over 45 million adjusted albums and 135 million tracks. She was the first to reach 100 million followers on Twitter. Katy’s 2015 Super Bowl performance is the highest-rated in the event’s history. Katy was the first female artist to have four videos surpass a billion views each. Her videos for “Firework” and “Last Friday Night” have over one billion views, while “Dark Horse” has surpassed the two billion mark. “Roar” now has over three billion views.

Katy Perry: “I’ve always wanted to be a part of the fun of Tomorrowland, and have been following the amazing innovation, technology, and invention that this festival has always been about for a long time. I’m so glad to be a part of this version, and I hope my set makes you smile.”

Katy Perry jumped on a video call earlier today with the world-famous Dutch DJ and producer Martin Garrix to announce her performance at the digital festival to the world. Watch HERE.

Yesterday it was announced, Tijs Verwest, better known as Tiësto, will perform for the first time ever as VER:WESTat Tomorrowland Around the World. Unveiling his new melodic house music project to the world at the iconic Freedom Stage during Tomorrowland’sdigital festival.

“I would describe VER:WEST as melodic house music. It’s a lot deeper and more chill and a verydifferentenergy than Tiësto. I got this opportunity from Tomorrowland to express a different side of me which I’ve never donebefore. I know they are going to put amazing visuals around it and make it look really different and cool. Expect theunexpected, it’s going to look amazing!” –says VER:WEST.

Factory People announce ‘Away To’ – a new social distancing party series and live stream across epic locations in the Middle East

by the partae July 14, 2020
written by the partae
A global pandemic and strict lockdown regulations. The first few months of 2020 left clubs and artists alike facing an unprecedented challenge. One initiative, titled “Away To”, has challenged the status quo by hosting a new series of socially distant parties. “Away To” makes it a point to adhere to safety measures while giving party goers and online surfers a breath of fresh air, a stream to look forward to and a party to attend!
The initiative saw two emerging content platforms partner up to pioneer a new form of partying that’s more suited for the times. The first is Vuse, a brand determined to support the creative scene of the region. So much so that they’ve created their own platform, Creative State, dedicated to encouraging artists to stay active despite difficult circumstances.
The second is Late Knights, a content platform by Factory People – that documents alternative local and international artists, giving a real look into the music scene in the Middle East through documentaries, features and concerts.
Over the course of 3 months, the platform transformed from hosting regional & international DJs broadcasting live sets from their home to exceptionally produced socially distant parties.
The strategic shift saw both platforms dedicate their efforts to high quality production, enhanced physical and visual experiences, and of course, beautiful venues as the cherry on top. With their now-household series “Away to” – Late Knights and Creative State by Vuse was ready to take the world by storm.
Besides shedding light on young talent and introducing one of the first socially distanced dancefloors, each one of the “Away To” parties are set in different obscure, yet, magnificent locations. Every venue is a handpicked hidden gem where the DJ booth is at the heart, surrounded by eager ravers moving to its beat.
Travel from one scenic venue to another, from Beirut, Dubai to Egypt, passing by Berlin – catch “Away To”, live every Friday on the Vuse Middle East Facebook page and on www.lateknights.co.

BOY PABLO SHARES NEW SINGLE ‘HONEY’ AND B-SIDE ‘JD’S SONG’ DEBUT ALBUM WACHITO RICO OUT OCTOBER 23 VIA 777 MUSIC

PRAISE FOR BOY PABLO

“Boy Pablo make the kind of balmy daydream music that perfectly assuages the sting of a breakup, making it clear that their success is more than a viral fluke”
Pitchfork

“‘Everytime’ was good. Really bloody outstanding, in fact; so much so that it cut through the barrage of adverts and caught people’s attention“
NME

“You want to listen to his tunes, but also talk shit and make memes with him”
i-D

“In just over a year gone from one-hit-wonders to Norwegian Grammy winning, Coachella-playing champs”
Clash

Norwegian bedroom pop sensation Boy Pablo today shares his latest double single, ‘honey / jd’s song’, the second release from his debut studio album Wachito Rico, out October 23 via 777 Records. Listen HERE.

Following on from lead single, ‘hey girl / i just wanna go home’, ‘honey’ puts Pablo’s artistic development since the breakout success of his viral 2017 single ‘Everytime’ on full display, showing off an increasing confidence in the studio away from the lo-fi bedroom recordings of his youth. Fusing lush production with jangly, sun-kissed 60s melodies, subtle notes of MPB and bossa nova that nod to Pablo’s Latin-American background and a dreamy chorus, ‘honey’ is Boy Pablo’s most psychedelic-leaning track to date. But to read that whimsy as uncomplicated would be mistaken.

As Pablo explains, “The track is about how a relationship moves between the bad and the good times, but even through the bad times the mutual love you’ve built and the fascination you have for each other never fades away, and you choose to stick together through it all.”

Like previous singles, ‘honey’ and ‘jd’s song’ reintroduce Boy Pablo as having simultaneously grown up and into his sound. With each new release from his forthcoming debut LP, the Norweigian songwriter is also sharply articulating what makes his sound so distinct amongst today’s indie-pop landscape. Seemingly so carefree on the surface, his woozily romantic brand of music actually harbors carefully shaded emotional nuance and surprising depths of musical complexity beneath its facade, with a charismatic tongue-in-cheek personality that balances heartache with lightness, ennui with serenity.

The artistic project of 21 year-old singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Nicolas Muñoz, the debut LP from Boy Pablo takes its title from a Chilean expression that translates to fondness for a “handsome boy”, a hybrid conceptual and autobiographical record, tracing the ebbs and flows of the titular character’s love story while threading this narrative through with Pablo’s own experiences as a young person, blurring the identities of Wachito Rico and the real life Nicolas Muñoz into one curious, indistinguishable whole. Having first introduced audiences to the character of Wachito Rico and his love life in ‘hey girl’ and ‘i just wanna go home’, Pablo is now beginning to fill out the picture of the hero of his forthcoming full-length with ‘honey’ and ‘jd’s song’.

‘honey‘ / ‘jd’s song‘ by Boy Pablo is out now via 777 Music,

CHARLIE GRADON IMMERSES IN NATURE DURING LOCKDOWN WITH THE HAZY CLIP FOR ‘BLURRY ONES’ + ANNOUNCES LAUNCH SHOW AT THE LANSDOWNE

by the partae July 14, 2020
written by the partae

“Charlie knows how to make a compelling track AND how to wring the last drops of emotion out of it.” – Dave Ruby Howe
“Charlie Gradon’s talent is seemingly uncontainable.” – Life Without Andy

Sydney melancholic storyteller Charlie Gradon revels in nature in the video accompaniment to his latest release ‘Blurry Ones”. He’s also announced his first real life show post-Covid lockdown on August 1st at The Lansdowne Hotel.

The product of an unexpected family collaboration the video showcases Gradon sampling nature with his vintage tape recorder. On the cusp of lockdown and visiting cousins from overseas, the idea snowballed and was filmed in one shoot that afternoon. “It was quite eerie as lockdown was just about to kick in so there was no one around.” He continues “I think the clip serves as nostalgia of a simpler time where we could go outside and enjoy the simple things.”

Since its release ‘Blurry Ones’ has been welcomed by radio with rotation on Double J and FBi Radio. From his forthcoming sophomore EP, the track was written when Gradon bought his wife a vintage camera which took, as he describes, “basically useless blurry photographs”. Born in his bedroom studio, the track sounds just like the blurry images Gradon sings of – nostalgic and reflective indie-rock.

Earlier this year Gradon resurfaced with the mellow single ‘Grieving’ which found a home on radio, reaching #3 on the AMRAP Metro Radio Charts along with adds on FBi Radio, 2SER and EDGE.

The products of a challenging period of change, both singles offer a glimpse of Gradon’s introspective upcoming sophomore EP – out later this year – which the talented multi-instrumentalist wrote and performed on his own.

This omnibus follows on from 2018’s ‘Self Doubt’ which intrigued audiences and garnered on-air support from Double J and FBi Radio and had him named in The Music Writer’s Poll for ‘Song of the Year’. Echoing this praise, he was recently a finalist in Happy Mag’s Needle in the Hay competition out of 2000 entries, and named in Life Without Andy’s Next Big Things for 2020.

With the world in an extended period of reflection Charlie Gradon is here with the perfect soundtrack.

DRO CAREY ANNOUNCES DEBUT ALBUM NOTHING IS A SOLO PROJECT, OUT FRIDAY 18 SEPTEMBER + SHARES NEW SINGLE ‘HOLD A VIBE (FEAT. ALEXX A-GAME)’

by the partae July 14, 2020
written by the partae

Soothsayer is thrilled to announce that beloved Sydney-based producer Dro Carey will be releasing his highly anticipated debut album Nothing Is A Solo Project on Friday 18 September. This exciting news comes with the release of his latest single ‘Hold A Vibe (feat. Alexx A-Game)’, a sun-soaked, Dancehall-inspired track that promises to thaw the winter blues and create an escape to somewhere you’d rather be.

An ode to the good things in life; weed, wine and better times, ‘Hold A Vibe’ features Jamaican artist Alexx A-Game, a widely respected artist who has collaborated with Tory Lanez and Swing Ting and seen support from the likes of COLORS Studios, Mixmag, The FADER, Resident Advisor, The Source and BBC 1Xtra. On this sun-drenched track, Alexx A-Game nods to early-2000s R&B with a playful hook in the chorus that Dro bounced off with the track’s production. This result is a song that Dro never expected to find a home on Nothing Is A Solo Project, “stylistically, it’s definitely an outlier for the record, but the creative risk posed by that extreme level of variety appeals to me.”

While such a fun track may cause some curiosity to those familiar with Dro’s more moody output, Dro Carey has always been an artist that pushes boundaries and exceeds expectations, and this sidestep into the sunshine should come as a pleasant surprise to all.

Joining ‘Hold A Vibe’ on Nothing Is A Solo Project is ‘Another Knot / Predictions’ – which premiered on triple j last month (with Purple Sneakers calling the release “undeniably special”), March’s ‘Clear To You (feat. Francesca Gonzales)’ / ‘Healer’ which premiered on Dummy Mag before being added to rotation at Double J and FBI radio, and 2019’s ‘Act Like You’re Home / Hemisphere’ which premiered via CLASH, and saw global streaming support from Spotify (including claiming the coveted cover of Top Shelf Electronic), Apple Music, Soundcloud and a glowing online review from Resident Advisor.

A long time in the making, Nothing Is A Solo Project is the kind of debut album that feels like it couldn’t possibly be a first release. Packed with a profusion of textured sounds and left-of-field features, it’s an album that’s part instrumental and part collaboration with some of the most talented and underrated vocalists he could unearth.

“I want to recognise not only the featured artists, but the creators of the sample libraries and the contributions of engineers, designers, managers, label teams and audiences in shaping the final creative work.”

While Dro Carey has been releasing tracks and LP’s under various monikers since the age of 16, Nothing Is A Solo Project is the first official full-length for the revered Dro Carey project, where his vast experiences, influences and tastes are combined to create the pivotal release of his artistic pursuit.

With ‘Hold A Vibe (feat. Alexx A-Game)’, Dro Carey pushes the boundary of what he is capable of and teases what is promising to be an extraordinary debut.

THE VIOLET WHISPERS

by the partae July 14, 2020
written by the partae

THE VIOLET WHISPERS is the brainchild of an emerging Sydney based musician, Nikhil Murthy. Since the release of their debut single Heaven Knows, their eclectic and euphoric brand of rock ‘n’ roll has won acclaim & coverage both nationally & internationally. Heaven Knows has been featured on notable outlets such as Happy Mag, The Bridge on FBI Radio, Peripheral Noise (Three D Radio 93.7fm), Music for The Misfits, Queen City Sounds and Art & Backbeat Podcast.

“The track is a dynamic slice of music that refuses to be categorised by any one genre. We’ve had the track spinning on repeat ever since we first laid ears on it” – Happy Mag

‘Heaven Knows’ is a mix of several genres and is an upbeat, fast-paced alternative pop track infused with a dose of synths. There are more hooks than I can count which leaves this a single that sounds like it’s multiple.” – Music for the Misfits

“That sounds beautiful” – Ashlea Jaye (Peripheral.Noise)

“Such a huge mix of genres! Seems like this one matched them all perfectly together” – DROVES (Band)

“Blend of acoustic instruments and synth feels like a bridge between current indie pop and music of They Might Be Giants from the 1980s “- Queen City Sounds and Art

Hot on the heels of this success comes the announcement of their fiery & explosive new single, Roads in Paris. An energetic call to action to fight for a better political & personal future for all of us. This potent message is set to the diverse mixture of folk, Coltrane-like saxophone, psychedelia guitar textures, rockin’ electronic beats, house inspired pianos & a powerful vocal performance that is sure to cause a stir once released on July 31st, 2020.

Where are you currently based and where were you born? Currently based in the St George area of Sydney. Born and raised in south-west Sydney - Campbelltown followed by Camden.  How did you first start playing the guitar/music? At 3 years old, I’d mimic my idols as well as my father who was a passionate hobby guitar player. If you asked my parents, they’d say that the only thing that came natural was my work ethic and passion to play. I’d lock myself in my room with a singles record player and try to copy my favourite riffs and guitar solos for hours on end. Eventually, my father began to nurture my passion by creating practice routines that ultimately put me on the path of being the guitarist I am today.   What's been happening recently? My focus has been divided amongst a few exciting things - completing my album, filming an episode of Australian Story, booking a tour as well as spending time connecting with the world on a new platform - Twitch.  Your new single 'Before You Check Out' is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting for this track? The vocals set the tone for the song. With the lyric being deep and at times confronting, I wanted the production to align a little more with the positive aspects of the message. I did this by keeping the tempo fairly up, and choosing appropriate instrumentation. Fingered acoustic, retro slide guitar, light percussion. On the flip side, I used 70’s influenced slide and trumpet to trigger “happy sad” emotions. Depth was achieved through big velvety keys, sub bass and piano from the bridge onwards. It was really important to me that the track stretched beyond simple folk production.   How did you go about writing Before You Check Out? I wrote BYCO after attending a cousin’s funeral who sadly lost his battle with depression/anxiety. Having recently dealt with my own demons that resembled his, I identified strongly with what he went through and understood why he made such a permanent decision. One morning I woke up rattled with regret that I hadn’t reached out to him earlier and began to query myself on what wisdoms I would have shared. My life transformed for the better when I learnt how our thoughts and beliefs colourise our experience. When we aren’t aware of this, we can be misguided on what the source of suffering truly is. The chorus lines instantly came to mind - Before you check out, before you give in, just know you’re checking out of a place you’ve never been. Ironically, I wrote the rest of the song whilst sitting in front of a sunset that was right in front of me, yet too lost in thought to notice.  And you’ve got a new album due out August 6 too, you sure have been busy!  Where and when did you record/produce and who did you work with? Too busy!!! Ha! I’m looking forward to having my weekends back. The first 5 tracks were produced by myself, co-produced and mixed by Tony Buchen (Montaigne, Mansionair) with half of the recordings engineered at Free Energy Device by Richie B. I decided to take on the rest of the tracks by myself with help from the ears of friends to keep me from falling down unproductive rabbit holes! ;)  How did you approach the recording/production? Many of these songs were written when I wasn’t intending to return to music. The demos were created over time purely from a place of catharsis. For most tracks, the aim was to do better versions of the demo and in some situations, we reverted back to takes used in the roughs! Influences were sub-conscious with flavours and styles forming organically with time. All songs bar one were chosen unanimously by myself and team. Let’s just say that if everyone around you passionately protests against the removal of a song -Listen! Fortunately, I did and with some love, it’s now close to one of my favourites.  What programs/instruments did you use? Pro Tools for recording and mixing. Guitars, bass, real drums, sample drums, brass, keys, piano, vocals. You've also made an amazing video to accompany the single, how did the concept for the video come about? Synchronicity! I wasn’t intending on releasing a film clip with this song. Cornered by my team, the pressure was on to create a clip in 3 days. I had to come up with a simple idea that cost no more than $500 and remembered that I always wanted to do a clip with a projector. With the song being about how projections of the past can colourise our experience, I felt like the idea would make sense both visually and conceptually.  Where and when did you film and who did you work with? I directed and edited myself with help from a DOP friend Andre Moonen who created the film clip for my song “Castles In The Sky”. Projector footage was archival from myself and 2 mates - Sean Boyd who did some work on a mindfulness clip I created some time ago for my vlog and a travel vlogger friend who had footage that took the visuals from being appropriate to also having a narrative. What did you find most challenging and rewarding during the creation of the video? Most challenging - committing to a deadline when I know little about film clips and had zero experience working with a projector!  Most rewarding was when we realised we had a clip that didn’t just aesthetically suit the song, but had an underlying narrative that helped to amplify the message. Who are you listening to at the moment? Broken Bells, Lana Del Ray, Khruangbin, Tame Impala, Father John Misty, Ry Cooder, Ennio Morricone ;) What do you like to do away from music? Go for hikes, take in beautiful views, enjoy all the simple things with my kids, TV series binging, surfing, training  You'll be featured on Australian Story in early August, can you give us a clue as to what we can expect? I can definitely guarantee that I’ll be seeing it for the first time when a million others see it! I believe it showcases my experiences as a child touring the world, battling Leukaemia and later in life how I came to get back in touch with myself and my art after dealing with relatable adversities.   You have a massive Australian tour coming that's kicking off in October followed by Bluesfest in 2021, what do you have in store for these shows? Contrast to how I grew up playing on stage, these shows will see me play songs and tell stories as a hybrid duo (2 guitars, sampler and at times, a trumpet player). As a kid, I just wanted to play music but these days I enjoy telling a story. Whether it’s about how music helped the healing process when I was sick as a kid to not knowing who Jimmy Page was when he asked me to sign a CD for him. I’m also very open about my struggles and feats with the hope of inspiring.  How do you prepare for shows and what do you most enjoy about playing live? That’s something I’m still working on. At the moment, after getting comfortable at sound check, I might have a nap followed by some sort of walking meditation to get my mind and body in sync. If nerves run too hot, I have mental “anchors” to help keep me grounded that are used while I shake out my body.  The moment I open my eyes after losing myself to realise that everyone was right there with me. It’s a connection that I’ve never felt off stage. To have so many different walks of life come together over a song or a story is pretty fucking special. Post-show bliss is pretty amazing too!  Any tips for aspiring musicians? Know why you play and never lose sight of it. For me, one half of the purpose is self-expression and catharsis but equally as important is connection. This means that I not only need to ensure that I’m expressing myself in an authentic way, but the way in which I do this needs to translate! Otherwise, I’ve only satisfied one half of my purpose.  Favourite food and place to hangout? Pizza! Fucking DF/GF so I haven’t had it in years :(  Takeaways on the beach.

Written and produced with longtime collaborators Bekon and The Donuts (Kendrick Lamar, SZA, Rich Brian – The Sailor), ‘Love In My Pocket‘ is a bubbly summer jam that marks a new chapter for Rich Brian. During quarantine, Rich Brian became inspired by his socially distant summer, surrounding himself with a community of incredible artists and creatives like Thundercat and Trippie Redd. Through ‘Love In My Pocket‘, fans and listeners will experience lyrics that are equal parts sun-drenched, sonic euphoria and pure angst as well as a fresh sound from Rich Brian that is here to stay.

‘Love In My Pocket‘ follows Brian’s smash hit, ‘Bali‘, which was released on April 10. Featuring Guapdad 4000, ‘Bali‘ has crossed over 20.5M streams since its release and received praises from outlets like The New York Times, Billboard, Complex, and more.

BIGSOUND is pleased to announce that it will proceed in 2020 with a revised program of conference, live music and parties, ensuring that its long-standing role of providing forward thinking, listening, learning, discovering and most importantly industry connection for the music community, is not lost due to COVID-19. The event will still occur in its spiritual home, the Fortitude Valley live music precinct, while fully respecting social distancing and safety protocols with a condensed program of conferences, workshops, facilitated conversations, live festival showcases, secret shows and official parties across two days and two nights across Wednesday 21 October and Thursday 22 October 2020. Artist live showcase applications are open today. Due to the event being condensed in size and capacity, there will be no artist application fees this year. The BIGSOUND’s live showcase program will take place at over 10 of the Valley’s best live music venues, while the conference will welcome key stakeholder groups from across Australia in what will be the first major meeting of industry since COVID-19 closed our doors in mid-March. “BIGSOUND has been the leader of conversation and discovery in the Australian music industry for over 18 years and this year we will be forging ahead with a recovery-focussed festival,” says QMusic CEO Angela Samut. “With the culture of our industry under threat from COVID-19, our industrial culture under scrutiny as we face head-on the structural inequities for women, LGBTQI+ and First Nations people, and our culture as a nation under the spotlight as global trends put even more pressure on local artists and local stories, never has it been more essential for BIGSOUND to proceed and succeed.” The 2020 event welcomes Janne Scott taking on the role of Creative Director. Ms Scott is the previous head of the BIGSOUND Visual Arts Program and retains her role as the Splendour In The Grass Senior Creative Manager. Alethea Beetson returns as First Nations Producer and Programmer, having programmed the acclaimed BIGSOUND First Nations programs in 2018 and 2019. Ms Beetson is working across the entire BIGSOUND program and event. Dominic Miller and Ruby-Jean McCabe join as Festival Co-Programmers, bringing with them years of industry experience across various roles including managers, agents, festival programmers and venue bookers and are the perfect duo to take on BIGSOUND Festival this year. With the impacts of COVID-19 and no international buyers able to travel to Brisbane, Maggie Collins will not be returning in 2020. We also acknowledge the work of conference programmer Tom Larkin and BIGTECH programmer David Grice, and Festival Programmers Tim Shiel and Melody Forghani for their huge contributions to BIGSOUND. BIGTECH will also be on hiatus this year, but wheels are already in motion for its return in 2021. BIGSOUND Festival is back, albeit in a COVID-safe way. All necessary safety, restrictions, and concerns will be implemented across all spaces during the event. Queensland is leading the East Coast for venue re-openings and we are confident that we will be the best place to see live music this October, and are excited to provide the opportunity for the Australia’s best and brightest upcoming new artists to continue to come together and showcase their talents across the Fortitude Valley Live Music Precinct. Minister for the Arts Leeanne Enoch said today’s confirmation of BIGSOUND 2020 sent a positive message that Queensland’s music industry was getting back to business. “The Palaszczuk Government has provided dedicated support to the music industry as part of our plan for economic recovery and creating jobs in the arts sector,” Minister Enoch said. “Beyond our ongoing long-term investment in QMusic, the Queensland Government has implemented more than $42.5 million worth of relief measures to the arts through COVID-19. This includes a recently announced $22.5 million Arts and Cultural Recovery Package offering funding specifically for the live music industry to assist venues to reopen and employ musicians. “The reactivation of Queensland’s live music industry is highly anticipated and I am confident that BIGSOUND will play a central role in Queensland’s plan for recovery.” Kirsty Rivers, Head of Music for the Australia Council for the Arts, said: “Our musicians are Australia’s storytellers along with our artists, writers, actors and designers. Music strengthens our economy but just as importantly, it deepens our connections with our First Nations and other nations and cultures.  The Australia Council is proud to once again partner in 2020 with BIGSOUND to accelerate and re-ignite the careers of Australia’s best and brightest industry and artists.” BIGSOUND acknowledges that at this time, Victorian artists are not able to travel to Queensland and although this is expected to change, due to the fluid nature of the situation and the majority of travel possibilities difficult to predict, we encourage all artists to apply and if they cannot attend there will be contingencies in place to create opportunities for participation remotely. Tourism Minister Kate Jones said events like BIGSOUND would play an important role in the state’s economic recovery. “Major events like this pump millions of dollars into the local economy and support local jobs,” Ms Jones said. “Because Queenslanders have done such a great job fighting COVID-19, we can now start welcoming tourists back to our state. This festival will deliver a great boost for local businesses at a time when everyone is doing it tough. It’s great news for the industry. “It has been an incredibly difficult year, but thanks to the efforts of the Queensland people, we have moved forward to our stage three easing of restrictions and will soon be reopening our borders to most Australians. With restrictions easing and the recent development of a COVID Safe Events framework, we’re starting to rebuild and recover.” ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pre-sale registration for delegate pass sales open 9.00am Wednesday 29 July. Join the BIGSOUND mailing list to access this pre-sale opportunity. Early-bird delegate pass sales open 9.00am Monday 3 August. IN RESPONSE TO FAN DEMAND
FOUR BRISBANE ‘UNPLUGGED & INTIMATE’ CONCERTS ADDED

In reply to fan requests to play in Brisbane, Sydney trio DMA’S have confirmed four – and only four – concerts at The Tivoli in Brisbane on Saturday 29 August and Sunday 30 August.

DMA’S made the decision to extend their ‘Unplugged & Intimate’ tour to Brisbane after fans took to the band’s social media after their eighteen Sydney concerts sold out in minutes last week.  The intimate and stripped back concerts are in support of the band’s new album THE GLOW, which was released last Friday to critical acclaim.

Promoters Frontier Touring, I OH YOU and Secret Sounds are working closely with The Tivoli to ensure COVID-19 safety standards are met for these concerts. The shows will have reduced audience numbers and will be fully seated.  A changeover period will occur between each concert to allow for cleaning of the venue.

An exclusive Artist Pre-sale for these shows will be made accessible from noon AEST on Tuesday 14 July (see here for details) for fans who purchase a $9.99 bundle, which includes a digital download of THE GLOW and a signed poster. All profits from this sale will be donated to The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Service (Qld) Ltd, to help them continue their work in providing professional and culturally competent legal services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across Queensland.

The band are only available for these four concerts in Brisbane so don’t mess around getting your ticket – if Sydney was any indication, these shows will sell fast!

To celebrate the release of the brand new mixtape None Of Us Are Getting Out Of This Life Alive (out now on Island Records), The Streets have today announced an exclusive club performance, to be livestreamed to the world from EartH Hackney on Thursday 6th August. A pay-per-view livestream event, this is likely to be the only time you will ever be able to watch Mike Skinner and his band perform in a club setting this small, and is the first time they’ve played a venue of this size since the summer of 2006.

LISTEN TO NONE OF US ARE GETTING OUT OF THIS LIFE ALIVE
The original plan had been to release a TONGA album (the balloon filled rap, grime and dubstep party by Mike and Murkage Dave, which had been a series of shoobs to remember). Copenhagen to Manchester to Berlin. Brum to Brixton. Usually arriving with a coterie of legendary UK figureheads and gobby upcomers in tow, like Kano, Giggs, Jammer or Jaykae, the pulsating essence of the nights needed to be immortalised.
But as night moved to day, and day moved along to night, it… just didn’t happen. Instead, a new mixtape None Of Us Are Getting Out Of This Life Alive steps up to take its place. Recorded between work on the accompanying film to The Streets new album, it is the unpredictable sonic continuation of those parties.
Taking in UK Funky and twilight zone UK rap, and with guest spots ranging from Grammy nominated psychedelia sovereign Tame Impala to cult south London rapper Jesse James Solomon, as well as 2019’s key-fiend-friendly drum’n’bass collab with Chris Lorenzo, None Of Us Are Getting Out Of This Life Alive is the most eclectic and highly collaborative collection of songs from The Streets yet. Or as Mike puts it with characteristic distinction: “it’s really just a rap duets album.”
The inclusion of, say, Mercury Prize nominated punk group IDLES (who perform what Mike describes as a sea-shanty tinged track inspired by an overnight ferry to Dover) and teenage wünderkind Jimothy Lacoste help ground things firmly in the here and now. But there are familiar faces of the past too. Birmingham legend, Dapz On The Map, pops up on merky rap track ‘Phone Is Always In My Hand‘. While Rob Harvey, previously of The Music and Skinner collaboration The D.O.T, tunes into pensieve penultimate track ‘Conspiracy Theory Freestyle’. Full track listing and featured artists detailed below:
1. Call My Phone Thinking I’m Doing Nothing Better (ft. Tame Impala)
2. None Of Us Are Getting Out Of This Life Alive (ft. IDLES)
3. I Wish You Loved You As Much As You Love Him (ft. Donae’o and Greentea Peng)
4. You Can’t Afford Me (ft. Ms Banks)
I Know Something You Did (ft. Jesse James Solomon)
6. Eskimo Ice (ft. Kasien)
7. Phone Is Always In My Hand (ft. Dapz on the Map)
8. The Poison I Take Hoping You Will Suffer (ft. Oscar #Worldpeace)
9. Same Direction (ft. Jimothy Lacoste)
10. Falling Down (ft. Hak Baker)
11. Conspiracy Theory Freestyle (ft. Rob Harvey)
12. Take Me As I Am (with Chris Lorenzo)

Adelaide Guitar Festival supports local musicians with The Backstage Sessions

Adelaide Guitar Festival is giving audiences a backstage pass to South Australia’s vibrant live music scene with today’s announcement of an online video series showcasing some of the state’s most talented guitarists.

Professionally filmed in the wings of Adelaide Festival Centre’s Festival Theatre, The Backstage Sessions will feature 15-minute sets from Adelaide Guitar Festival favourites along with accomplished emerging artists.

Audiences will be treated to candid performances set against the unique backdrop of memorabilia collected from previous Adelaide Festival Centre productions.

Spanning rock, jazz, blues, classical and experimental, new videos will appear weekly on Adelaide Guitar Festival’s Facebook page from Friday, July 17, until the virtual event concludes on Sunday, August 9.

Adelaide Guitar Festival Artistic Director Slava Grigoryan: “After the loss of this year’s festival, we’ve looked for alternative possibilities for engaging some of our incredible local artists in a series of mini-concerts which capture the intimacy and joy of these rare collaborations. This is an initiative which we hope to continue long after social-distancing restrictions are lifted, and we’re seeing our audiences again ‘in the flesh’. We hope you enjoy watching these as much as we enjoyed making them!”

Adelaide Festival Centre Artistic Director & CEO Douglas Gautier AM: “This month was set to see the biggest Adelaide Guitar Festival yet, with performances scheduled to take place across the state from July 1 to August 9. So to revel in the spirit of the festival that would have been, we’ve created something very special for guitar enthusiasts.

“This is an important opportunity to support South Australian musicians at a time when they have faced significant challenges in making a living out of what they do best. We hope The Backstage Sessions encourages more initiatives to help the local music industry recover from what has been a very difficult year so far.”

The line-up for The Backstage Sessions includes Chris Finnen, Cal Williams Jr & Kory Horwood; Kelly Menhennett & Band; The Tom Kneebone Trio; Mike Bevan & Alain Valodze; The Django Rowe Quintet and The Yearlings featuring Slava Grigoryan.

Videos can be viewed at facebook.com/adelaideguitarfestival and on the Adelaide Guitar Festival website. Audiences are invited to like and follow Adelaide Guitar Festival on Facebook to receive notification of the latest posts.
