“If you’re a fan of Channel Tres, you’ll dig what Life On Planets and Taylor Bense are cooking up.” –This Song is Sick

October 9, 2020 — Today, Baltimore artist Life On Planets shares his new collaboration with Brooklyn’s Taylor Bense to share a new EP ‘Glowstick‘. The three-song project is their first release together after signing to esteemed dance/electronic label, Kitsuné Musique. The two musicians put their newfound musical chemistry on full display with their sultry summer R&B/House EP.

The title track “Glowstick” premiered on This Song is Sick who says, “The groove on this one is undeniable. The bass line is enough to get any dance floor moving, especially with the playful vocalizing, “bum-ba-dum-bum,” that rides along with it.”

Celeste explains how his new project with Taylor Bense materialized staying, “We were at the studio talking about how we both loved R&B and trap and stuff that was coming out but how it didn’t belong in our sets at dance clubs. We wanted to make something with a taste of both worlds that could be played at our performances without being totally alien to what we already do.”

Life On Planets and Taylor Bense’s new EP is out now via Kitsuné Musique.

“…charming Sydney singer songwriter churning out indie heartwarmers” – triple j

“…a star amongst the Sydney indie-rock world that in the year just gone started to find his footing in a national sense” – Pilerats

Sydney singer-songwriter Jack R. Reilly has released his long-awaited debut album, Middle Everything, out now on Lost Boy Records. The album was produced by Jonno Tooke from Cry Club.

Jack R. Reilly explains the theme behind Middle Everything, “Middle Everything is me acknowledging the feelings and thoughts that come up while practicing meditation. During the writing process I was living alone in Kings Cross and spending a huge amount of time either meditating, or going for really long walks in to and around the city. I’d spend almost every Saturday and Sunday walking around with a notebook, finding little places to write. At night I’d come home and try to work shop those into songs. I received a lot of help from my long time producer and studio collaborator, Jonno Tooke (from cry club) to bring these songs out of my notebook, and the extreme talent of my live band to bring these songs to life.”In April, Jack R. Reilly won the triple j Unearthed NIDA music video competition. They produced the video for lead single, Blood, which premiered on Rage over the weekend.

Jack explains what Blood is about, “Blood is also a meditation of frustration. Of feeling as though I’m just working all the time. Where it differs from Who Can Say is that I’m more leaning in to it, throwing myself into the flood. Being honest with myself is a really liberating thing, and I’m feeling the frustration eases and I can remind myself that the work is the actual reward.”

He adds, “We wanted to explore the concept that, although it’s long and arduous, putting in work is a reward in itself. It also does a lot to capture my non-musical influences such as Dr Who, Batman and The Mighty Boosh.” about the video.

To celebrate the release of Middle Everything, Jack R. Reilly will be performing an album release show in November.

MDOU MOCTAR Signs to Matador Records Releases ‘Chismiten’ New full length out next year

Praise for Mdou Moctar

“An incandescent set of guitar music with a spontaneous, celebratory air—and a latent urgency”
– Pitchfork

“… raw guitar sound and haunting lyrics” – The Guardian

Matador Records & Remote Control Records are thrilled to announce the addition of prodigious Tuareg guitarist and songwriter Mdou Moctar to its roster.

A once-in-a-generation artist backed by an unstoppable rhythm section, Mdou’s music has roots in both traditional Tuareg melodicism and Eddie Van Halen’s daredevil majesty. Today we offer you ‘Chismiten’, the white-hot ripper that will kick off an expansive new full-length due to hit down next year. “The song is about how people in a relationship lose their sense of self, they become jealous and envious of others”, explains Mdou. “It is not about one specific person, but about all people in the world. I turn to Allah for guidance not to be that person”.

The song is accompanied by a video that blends illustrations by artist Robert Beatty with animation and cellphone footage shot in Niger, capturing wedding performances by the band, their friends and family, the markets in Niamey and Agadez, and the famous Agadez Mosque.

It’s possible that you’re already familiar with Mdou via his leading role in Akounak Tedalat Taha Tazoughai, the first Tuareg language film – a retelling of Prince’s Purple Rain. Otherwise, you may have spent time with last year’s monumental Ilana: The Creator, the guitarist’s first true studio album recorded alongside his live band. Indeed, it was this album and the band’s explosive concerts that brought them to Matador’s attention.

Mdou and his group – bassist and producer Mikey Coltun, drummer Souleymane Ibrahim, and rhythm guitarist Ahmoudou Madassane – have toured ceaselessly throughout the world, evolving into a ferocious ensemble that can rock a Tuareg wedding as easily as they can scorch a festival stage.

At present, their live energies are unparalleled and their range immense, capable of evoking both the mesmeric boogie of Masters of Reality-era Black Sabbath and Black Uhuru’s sublime electrified grooves. “At our concerts we never talk about the music we are going to play, never write out a setlist, it’s whatever comes to my head that I’m feeling”, says Mdou. “My band is always with me listening”.

This is all evident on ‘Chismiten’, where Mdou’s whirling riffs embroider and illuminate the band’s hypnotic grind, kicking up a noise that is at once elemental and undeniably transcendent.

Mdou Moctar – ‘Chismiten’ is out now via Matador Records / Remote Control Records.

THIS IS THE KIT Share track + live video ‘Was Magician’

by the partae October 8, 2020
written by the partae

This is The Kit have shared new single ‘Was Magician’ alongside a live performance video. The single comes from her upcoming album Off Off On, out on Rough Trade Records / Remote Control on October 23rd, 2020. The video was recorded and filmed by Lyon Sound and Vision at L’Epicerie Morderne in France and remotely directed from NYC by Marisa Gesualdi.

‘Was Magician’ is both a wander through the books of author Ursula K. Le Guin and a meditation on the gifts and powers that people have, and what happens when they are underestimated. This Is The Kit’s Kate Stables explains, “Often it’s children who have underestimated powers. They have an understanding and wisdom about things that we think beyond their abilities, they are often leaps and bounds ahead of the ‘adults’. People like Greta Thunberg – the young people who we have borrowed the earth from and who we have to give it back to, and hope that they will take better care of it than we have.”

Stables worked on Off Off On with producer Josh Kaufman, New York-based member of Bonny Light Horseman & Muzz, who has also collaborated with The Hold Steady, The National and most recently Taylor Swift. The two first met when working with Anaïs Mitchell on a cover of the Osibisa song ‘Woyaya‘, their paths later crossing at the PEOPLE residencies in Berlin and Brooklyn.

“We were on the same page about a lot of musical ideas, as well as doing things I wouldn’t do musically,” Stables explains of working with Kaufman. “It was a lovely mixture of ‘you’re exactly in my brain and exactly at the opposite end of my brain.’” The band, completed by Rozi Plain (bass/vocals), Neil Smith (guitar), Jesse D Vernon (guitar, keyboards), Jamie Whitby-Coles (drums/vox) recorded Off Off On in Wiltshire, UK’s Real World Studios, finishing just in time for everyone to get home before lockdown began in March.

‘Was Magician‘ is the third single to be released from the upcoming album, following earlier tracks ‘This Is What You Did’ which was added to Double J rotation and ‘Coming to get you Nowhere’ premiered by Triple R’s Breaking and Entering.

MAY-A RELEASES NEW SINGLE ‘APRICOTS’

PRAISE FOR MAY-A

Feature Artist
triple j Unearthed

“MAY-A is going to be an artist who makes big waves in 2020”
Nick Findlay, triple j

“Pop wunderkind”
Tone Deaf

“Honest, intimate and gentle yet still commanding”
Purple Sneakers

Today, 19-year-old Byron Bay-raised, Sydney-based songwriter MAY-A shares her latest single, ‘Apricots’. Listen HERE.

‘Apricots’ is a deeply-felt rush of emotion, its twinkling guitar line giving way to the crunch of the chorus as MAY-A surveys the inner and real-life terrain of coming to terms with your sexuality, counterbalancing questions of identity against a blossoming queer relationship. ‘Apricots’ follows on from her most recent single, ‘Green’, which was premiered on Home and Hosed with Declan Byrne, received full rotation on triple j and won praise from Pilerats, Purple Sneakers, Best Before, and more, including triple j Unearthed, who named her Feature Artist in June.

Of the track, MAY-A shares that: “Apricots is ultimately a story about a friendship between two girls but not in the traditional sense, it is an inner dialogue between my head and my heart. This song is super important to me because I wrote it around the time that I was coming to terms with my sexuality and realising I had feelings for a girl for the first time. I originally started writing it about a relationship, but as it evolved it became more about my current self talking to my past self.”

She continues: “The lyric “Up in my mind we’re together, I’m sorry I forgot, you’re not looking for a person, that’s something you’ve already got” is basically me talking about my past and when I had a boyfriend. We didn’t really work well together at all, but I kept turning a blind eye to it because I thought that we looked good together when we really had nothing in common and were just super awkward all of the time. if I had known I liked girls I would never have gone there in the first place. The song is ultimately a letter to my younger self, helping her come to terms with the fact that she is looking for something ‘she doesn’t even know she wants’ and letting her know that that’s ok.”

‘Apricots’ is the fourth single from the prolific but patient songwriter who’s been steadily sharing her previously private goldmine with the outside world, building a considered and assuredly diverse discography from over 100 demos. Having written music since the age of 12, MAY-A has honed a brand of songwriting that marries the classic pop structures and storytelling of parental favourites that permeated her childhood home with the post-genre sensibilities of Billie Eilish, the nonchalant, Gen Z cool of Clairo, and the suburban poetry of Lorde. With her poignant, elliptical storytelling, clear-eyed observational lyricism, and songwriting full of musical left-turns, MAY-A interrogates the realities of youth with clarity and maturity beyond her 19 years.

‘Apricots‘ also comes with the announcement of global label and agent signings with Sony Music (ANZ), Mike Greek at CAA (Florence and The Machine, Haim, Sigur Ros) and Evan Davis at Village Sounds (Vance Joy, Wafia).

‘Apricots‘ by MAY-A is out now, buy/stream it here.

'Never' can be described as an Electronic-House-Merger. The piece’s beginning starts with a lo-fi-esque pad sound, which is surrounded by the artist’s signature sounds: the chirping birds. The beginning is about the conveyance of a soothing moment that is immediately impeded through lo-fi vocal chops. The track continues its dynamic build-up, with rhythmic intonations that are circumventing the ear drums. These are accompanied by subtle bass line and a euphonious chord progression. While the drop sets in, the shivering voices do engulf the listener’s surroundings, accompanied by the drum and percussion patterns. The track’s intensity is getting more from second to second. This can be heard especially in the section from 1:30 min to 2:05 min and 3:19 min to 3:49 min.    The notion behind 'Never':  “….Never is about recalling the feelings we all encountered during the last few months. It is the aural and visual epitome of being stuck in an emotional rollercoaster. We all were trying to cope up with the sheer knowlessness due to the new moments that were caused by the beginning of the COVID 19-pandemic. During lockdown and the period of loosening restrictions, we had the opportunity to rethink our values, to see, what truly matters and to fight against the vapid angst that was caused by this pandemic. The human race had to rethink a lot, re-establish themselves as a society. Try out to establish a new normal, a new way of life.… ‘Cause this is what humanity is about: Innovation and Courage. Finding solutions, instead of blaming each other. With these two aspects, humanity will »never never die«.”  Bio: Born inside a multicultural environment, Alith came in touch with the realm of electronic music & its endless possibilities of stimulating emotions. The artist tends to experiment in the spheres of Electronica & Alt. Pop. He then merges the amalgamation with elements of Ambient and UK Bass to craft a sound that portrays his interpretation of nowadays’ music. TOM SNOWDON STEPS OUT SOLO WITH NEW EP CHANNEL

LOVE FOR TOM SNOWDON

“Mesmerising”
Rolling Stone Australia

“Haunting”
The Music

“No Mono‘s Tom Snowdon knows how to cover a song”
Music Feeds

Mparntwe/Alice Springs artist Tom Snowdon is releasing his first solo material in the form of EP Channel. Listen HERE.

As a child, one of Snowdon’s favourite records was the covers album Messenger by Yorta Yorta artist Jimmy Little. He thought the songs were all Little’s, and it’s been a collection he’s returned to over the years. At the urging of a friend earlier this year, Snowdon has created a collection of his own cover versions – both as a nod to the influence of Little and as a way to transition into creating music solo, after a career-to-date of working collaboratively with bandmates and co-writers. As evidenced by these haunting versions of ‘Two Weeks‘ and ‘Unchained Melody‘ it’s clear Snowdon can take a song and make it his own.

Originally imagined as a live record performed with a band, coronavirus restrictions meant Snowdon had to change tack. Capturing warm and organic feelings in the songs, and for them to have a bit of a live energy remained important, so he experimented with minimal arrangements and leaned into performing a lot of the recording fully live. For example, ‘Lose You To Love Me‘ and ‘Blue Moon‘ are more or less one-take recordings with extra bits added on-top.

The songs themselves were whittled down from scores of options – Snowdon followed his voice and recorded the tracks that just felt good to sing, and carried a curious atmosphere he could explore. Some of his favourite singers include Björk, Nina Simone, Elizabeth Fraser (Cocteau Twins) and Mark Hollis (Talk Talk). “They’re mesmerising for me because they take listeners on a journey with their voices. They’re deeply instrumental and rich with emotion, so the words they sing take on weight and power. The Björk song is actually my vocal warm up. ‘Unravel’ wasn’t in the original list to work on but it came about in the studio with my co-producer Matt Redlich that it was a favourite of both of ours, so we wanted to give it a shot. Her singing is so expressive that it sounds like it just pours out of her soul.”

Tom Snowdon hails from Mparntwe/Alice Springs, from a large close-knit family. Now living in Melbourne, the distance between him and home is wide. Stemming from his connection to the Jimmy Little album, the act of making Channel “is a way of reaching across the country to my family back in Central Australia.”

Channel by Tom Snowdon will be out 7th October via Pieater, buy/stream it here.
For our friends at community radio, you can also download the track via AMRAP here.

Following months of anticipation, Joji’s second studio album Nectar (released September 25 via 88rising and distributed by 12ToneMusic) has debuted at #1 in Australia, being the first 88rising artist to have a #1 album in Australia. The record continued to make waves across the world, hitting #2 in New Zealand, #4 in Canada, #6 in the United Kingdom and #9 in Norway. It has also reached #1 on Spotify’s inaugural US Weekly Top 50 Albums chart which launched today and opened at #3 on the Billboard 200, nearly doubling the first-week sales of his RIAA gold-certified 2018 debut BALLADS 1. Hailed by Newsweek as “a shapeshifting best-seller”, Nectar is Spotify’s most-streamed new album globally this week.

Pocketmoth

Where are you currently based?

Meanjin (Brisbane, Australia).

What’s been happening recently and how has your Covid experience been so far?

As with most promoters/labels in the Brisbane scene, things have been pretty quiet. We’ve used this down time to finalise our recently released vinyl release (the label’s first) and lock in some other digital releases. Other than that, we’ve played a few sets on The Quivr – A Brisbane based DJ streaming platform that so happened to pop up just before lockdown began.

Please tell us about Pocketmoth and your co-founder; how did you wind up starting a label together?

Zach and I have played in a band together for about six years, and always had a mutual interest in Electronic music. As time progressed, we started making mixes, digging for music, and attending raves etc. Having been involved with a record label via our band, we understood the basics of how to run one, and figured we could do something similar.

What core values do you have as a label?

– Our label abides by the core values of dance music; Inclusivity, diversity, safety, free creativity and expression.

What qualities must an artist and track possess to be on Pocketmoth?

– we are captivated by sounds that move us. Our discography contains many articulations of this, from tight minimal pieces, do huge luscious soundscapes. In short, we chase unique sounds from unique artists that share our philosophy; attention to detail, a clear conceptual framework, and passion for music in all forms.

Do you find it difficult to push such a unique sound in a city like Brisbane?
Not hugely. We have such a tight knit community, and many of the Bris-based artists that release with us are well respected by their peers. Naturally, this gives local releases an organic reach throughout the city, which is very special. Our scene is still growing, and I feel that Pocketmoth and Brisbane will move forward very quickly in tandem. Who knows where we will be in a few years.
Please tell us about some of your artists?

It’s almost an injustice to spotlight a few, as there are so many talented artists that feature in our discography. Perhaps then, I’ll mention the artists responsible for forthcoming Pocketmoth releases:

– Gabriel Magdelani and Niran Mantin:  Two very talented minimal producers from Tel Aviv, responsible for the recently released vinyl, Physical Desires [PKM009]. Though we’ve never met, we’ve developed a strong friendship with Gabriel, Niran and their network of producers, having featured a few on Pocketmoth releases.
– Olympic Swimming Pool Maintenance
A producer, visual artist and live electronic performer from Brisbane. He is due to release an ambient techno EP on the label digitally in the next few months, so stay tuned.
– DJ Borderforce
A close friend, collaborator and co-founder of local promoter ’No Persuasion’. We share a studio with him also. An extremely refined producer with an incredible work ethic. He’s always experimenting with new gear, new setups, and new ideas in his music. His forthcoming EP will be filled with big drums, luscious pads and uplifting chord progressions.
– Squidgenini

Possibly the most all-round talented artists we know. An Incredible vocalist, keys player and critical thinker, with a bunch of well-received original music already to her name. Squid has been recently diving into deeper styles of electronic music, and the results are super exciting. No dates locked in yet, but likely early next year.

Some exciting news, word has it you are releasing your first vinyl this month, please tell us about the release: What inspired you to go for vinyl?

Pressing music to vinyl has been a goal of ours since we started the label in late 2017, however as a small label with not much reach, no contacts and an unrefined palette, it didn’t make sense at first. Things are different now – we have rubbed shoulders with amazing artists and label owners from Australia and abroad, grown within local and international communities, and maintain a better understanding of our goals.

Having already released on the label, Gabriel suggested to us the idea of a collaborative release with his colleague Niran. As Gabriel is Arab Israeli, and Niran Jewish Israeli, the release aims to show the transcendent power of dance music, and share a message of unity. Of course, the music was also incredible: tightly produced, textural, groovy. We couldn’t have dreamed for a more perfect release to press as our first vinyl.
Physical Desires EP [PKM009], by Gabriel Magdelani and Niran Mantin, released on the 25th Sept 2020, and is available physically via Bandcamp Juno, Decks, Deejay and a number of record stores. It’s also available digitally via band camp, Soundcloud and primary streaming services.
Does Pocketmoth ever do label nights?

Super Whatnot w/ Madeline Holt: A monthly night of all-vinyl selections by Myself (Black Mannequin), and Zach (Quincy Raw), accompanied by digital art projections by our good friend, Madeline Holt.

Cerulean Showroom: This was our bimonthly club night, featuring immersive deep blue visuals, quadraphonic sound and strictly local selectors playing prime-time sets. It showcased the talent that Brisbane has to offer, by providing local DJs with an international level setup and vibe. It sadly came to an end due to certain constraints, and given the COVID situation, we haven’t been able to book anything much since. We’ll be back though, offering the same production level with a fresh concept.
Who are you listening to at the moment?

Off The Meds

K-Lone
Satoshi Tomiie
Al Wootton
Local:
Squidgenini
Big Dead

Waqef

What do you like to do away from music?

Play football, ride bikes, read.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2020 going into 2021?

We aim to piece out two more releases before the new year, and then another couple in early 2021. From there, maybe another vinyl? It’s hard to know given the current circumstances!!

Favourite food and place to hangout?
Fave food: Almond Croissant (paired with long black).

Fave hang out spot: Super Whatnot – Burnett Lane, Brisbane City. Amazing mixologists, tasty nibbles. Music policy: strictly vinyl. Small bar, big vibes.

PRAISE FOR MAX LEONE “Burgeoning pop star" Billboard "A real winner, complete with smooth vocals and sticky melodies" PAPER Magazine "Max Leone is making a case for himself as one of pop's next young stars" Pigeons & Planes "The anti-pop prodigy fusing mind-boggling creations with raw emotion" NME "Max Leone, pop’s newest face, is worthy of your attention" Pilerats Breakout Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter and producer Max Leone today shares his latest single, ‘5’, out now via The Darkroom. Listen HERE. His fifth single of the year, each of Max Leone’s first four singles have so far occupied a distinct sonic world, a marker of the anti-pop prodigy’s versatility and his capacity to be naturally, seamlessly fluent across multiple styles but also his intent to introduce the full breadth of his artistry on his forthcoming debut EP. And ‘5’ is no exception, immersing itself in lushly produced electronic-leaning psychedelia reminiscent of Tame Impala. Max subsumes his mixture of lo-fi and polished within this previously unexplored sound, allowing luxuriant, swirling synth chord, electronic drums and his lilting vocals to occupy the foreground of ‘5’ while constant musical tinkering and choppy vocal samples linger in the background, as Max proves his malleability and ability to produce sonically and emotionally deeply rewarding music, stretching ‘5’ out to his longest runtime to date. Of the track, Max shares that: “Recently I’ve been faced with a lot of tough, existential questions regarding how I perceive the world around me and my role in it. In confronting this, I also find myself saying goodbye to certain pieces of a previous self. 5 is about that loss of innocence.” Trained as a guitar principal at Berklee College of Music before eventually dropping out, the music Leone is now producing represents the marriage of his formal musical background and his affection for contemporary alt-pop and R&B, spending countless after-school hours as a teenager teaching himself production via YouTube and uploading remixes to Soundcloud. Like his previous singles, ‘5’ keeps one foot in both of these worlds while also seeming to exist entirely outside of them, packaging an enviable amount of compositional finesse into a highly consumable bedroom-pop gem, allowing the underlying complexity of his compositions to play in service of the overall vibe. Off the strength of the smattering of these singles, Max Leone has already emerged as one of 2020’s most promising new artists, amassing over 4 million Spotify streams to date. ‘5’ follows the previously released ‘First Grade’, ‘The Beach’, ‘Cautious’, and ‘Malleable’, received full rotation across triple j and won praise from Billboard, NME, Pigeons & Planes, Pilerats, Purple Sneakers, Ones to Watch, Earmilk and more. Inspired by childhood influences such as Otis Redding and Nina Simone, Max Leone’s music is defined by the combination of soulful, acoustic-led songwriting with the left-of-center production choices of Lorde and fellow Darkroom-signee Billie Eilish, harnessing the DIY, genre-averse pop intelligence of bedroom stars BENEE and Omar Apollo. “Taiwanese band Sunset Rollercoaster make dreampop that pulls from groovy ’70s soft rock and R&B, exotica, psych, orch-pop and more.”
BrooklynVegan

Taiwanese soul-psych outfit Sunset Rollercoaster today share their latest single, ‘Candlelight’, featuring OHHYUK, and announce their forthcoming third full-length album, Soft Storm, due October 30th. Listen HERE and watch HERE.

Opening with plucked guitars that sound at once laidback and world-weary, ‘Candlelight’ simmers along patiently, building with outsized synths and pulsating chords until the percussion enters and the intertwining vocals of OHHYUK and lead singer Kuo Kuo puncture the tension towards the second half of the track. Featuring South Korean musician OHHYUK, frontman of indie rock group Hyukoh, ‘Candlelight’ – the closing track from their forthcoming third LP – represents the meeting point of two groups currently at the forefront of Asia’s booming independent music scene.

On the collaboration, Sunset Rollercoaster shares that: “Oh Hyuk has a unique and emotional voice, it’s great that we can work on the song Candlelight together, it’s a song about memories. Oh Hyuk made it colorful.” Meanwhile, OHHYUK says: “I really like Sunset Rollercoaster’s music and enjoy listening to their songs often. So, it felt great to take part in a new song by the band. I had a pleasant time and I hope people will enjoy listening to the track.”

On their third record, which follows their 2019 EP VANILLA VILLA and their most recent LP, 2018’s Cassa Nova, Sunset Rollercoaster continue their project of absorbing classic American genres and styles into their amalgam of smooth 80’s city pop, “cute prog rock” and contemporary pop music. With Soft Storm, they turn their attention to sensuous and pensive quiet storm R&B. Appropriately, Soft Storm is a record full of introspective funk and quietly intense narratives, loosely tracing the course of a rainstorm hitting an unnamed city, following individuals stories of residents caught up in its path as Kuo Kuo’s lyricism zooms in and out of their lives, darting from city building to building.

With the release of Soft Storm, Sunset Rollercoaster are set to capitalise on their increasingly worldwide popularity, known for their epic guitar jams, imaginative visuals, and mesmerizing live show. Their most recent 2019 EP, VANILLA VILLA, made fans at Bandcamp, Flaunt, Hypebeast, Paste, Brooklyn Vegan, among others, with lead single ‘Villa‘ also getting a mind-bending remix from Stones Throw‘s Jerry Paper.

About Sunset Rollercoaster:
Sunset Rollercoaster formed nearly a decade ago from friendships formed at Underworld, a beloved (now defunct) indie music venue in Taipei. Since then, the soul-psych outfit have released two full-length albums and two EPs (Vanilla Villa, Bossa Nova, Jinji Kikko, and Cassa Nova), garnering a massive fanbase in Asia as well as a loyal international following with fans at Resident Advisor, Hypebeast, Bandcamp, I-D, Carhartt WIP, Beats By Dre, Paste, Brooklyn Vegan, and more. “My Jinji,” a single off their EP Jinji Kikko, and most popular track to date has +50million streams (and counting) across Spotify, YouTube, Apple Music, and more.

‘Candlelight feat. OHHYUK‘ by Sunset Rollercoaster is out now, buy/stream it here.

Where are you currently based?

Gold Coast, Australia.

How did you first start playing music?

I had just left school, my birthday wasn’t to far off and it had been the first time my mother could afford to get me something nice, I asked for a home studio set up, I bought Logic Pro X and started to teach myself music. At first I’d just narrate random videos, I wanted to learn expression and how to get comfortable listening to my own voice, and how to use projection, eventually I recorded my first rap.

What’s been happening recently and how has your Covid experience been so far?

My life never stops, there’s always something crazy going on, so COVID was just another small bump in the road, I’ve just been concentrating on being a better family man, and prioritising things better, having that clarity of knowing I’m getting shit done, has helped me curate my music better.

Your new single ‘Playboy Type’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

It was a time I was feeling a peak in my alter ego, it had been on my mind for quite sometime to make a track where I could perform live and just flip the show upside down, with bass melody and specific lyrics, that were influenced by an overdose I had.

How did you go about writing Playboy Type?

I got in a more controlled but similar head space of the night I overdosed, and tried to tune into the thoughts I was having so I could bring the sound I was hearing to life.

Where and when did you record/produce and who with?

I recorded PLAYBOY TYPE in my apartment at the Meriton, Damien Alter produced the beat, I mixed and mastered the project as a whole.

What programs/instruments did you use?

Logic Pro X

How did the concept for the music video come about?

The creative direction of the music video was based around the trip. I told my videographer I wanted to recreate the scene of where it happen, and that his edits were to create a visual experience similar to what I was seeing that night, and he did exactly that.

Where and when did you film and who did you work with?

I filmed it in the lounge room of my apartment, I worked with Micha O’Brien.

What did you find most challenging and rewarding during the creation of the video?

The challenging part was the budget we were working off, the most rewarding part was everybody was on the same page, and super comfortable with one another, everybody respected what I was trying to do and we executed it as group.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

At the moment I’m listening to Bryson Tiller, 21 Savage, Flatbush Zombies and Schoolboy Q the most.

What do you like to do away from music?

I just signed a modelling contract so I’ve been focusing on getting fitter and learning more about the fashion world, and designing my own clothing pieces etc.. I like to do a lot of reading books, cooking, watching documentaries and having sex. As all 5 of these things help me make better music.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2020 going into 2021?

To finish putting together my first Mixtape, finish my merch designs and start to put together a schedule for the new year.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

Favourite food at the moment is bao. Favourite place to hang out is my girls bed.

Mad Ones ‘Run On You’ Premiere

by the partae October 6, 2020
written by the partae

Toronto’s pre-eminent road warriors, Mad Ones, have been a city staple for ages – forging loyal fans and followers through-out the town (and the country).  Fronted by the enigmatic Andrew Devillers, the new music is gripping and wholly fantastical to behold.

“It’s 3099. Love reigns supreme and all beings live in interplanetary harmony. Yet for some strange reason the universal population is digging on a tune with sloppy slide guitar, a funky beat and a refrain acknowledging that when we abandon our neighbour in their time of need we abandon our own need for existence.”

BEN HARPER RELEASES ‘PARIS’ FROM SOLO LAP STEEL ALBUM WINTER IS FOR LOVERS (ANTI- RECORDS)

by the partae October 6, 2020
written by the partae

Ben Harper has revealed the final preview of his new album Winter Is For Lovers before its October 23 release (ANTI-Records). The album is Harper’s first-ever entirely instrumental project, and in many ways his entire musical life has culminated in this moment: a 15-song solo recording of original compositions imagined as a symphony on his lap steel guitar.

Watch/listen to “Paris” HERE

The songs on Winter Is For Lovers are named after the geographic locations that, over the years, helped to inspire the record, with the closing track “Paris” capturing the solitude of a wistful afternoon with the soft, meditative slide of Harper’s lap steel guitar.

Says Harper: “I’ve done a lot of writing in Paris over the years, and it’s my attempt at a musical description of experiencing a walk through a park in Paris.”

Harper has pushed musical boundaries since his 1994 debut and his lap steel guitar has played a tremendous role in his distinct sound throughout his career. But he’s never made an album that so purely distills his reverence for the instrument, and his mastery of it. Winter Is For Lovers is filled with the music Harper heard growing up, listening to the blues, Hawaiian and classical guitar masters in his mother’s record collection. He gravitated early on to the distinct wail of the slide guitar, learning finger picking from the great Taj Mahal and later studying with Chris Darrow of Nitty Gritty Dirt Band – a lap steel virtuoso who had a major influence on Harper’s lifelong embrace of the instrument.

Previously released singles include “London,” and “Inland Empire,” which was covered by Rolling Stone, SPIN, Paste and others.

This week Harper also appeared on WNYC’s Soundcheck program in the US to perform three selections from the forthcoming album and discuss its origins.  In September Harper appeared with Ziggy Marley on The Today Show in the US and The Late Late Show with James Corden to perform “Play With Sky.”
