It has been 4 short months since Lisa Caruso’s highly anticipated debut album ‘In Feelings’ dropped on our ears. After selling out album launch shows next to accolades on the record from Double J, The Guardian, Tonedeaf and NME, Caruso has since embraced stages supporting Sarah Blasko, Boy and Bear, and Amy Shark. As we continue to enjoy the ride of the album, let’s take a look back at the stunning cinematography from Lisa’s Music Videos which played a large part in actualising the LP and the singles that flowed from it.

Live at the Bowl will see the world premiere of the MESS Synthesiser Orchestra with an epic, newly commissioned piece called Magnitudes come to life on Saturday 27 March as part of MESS at the Bowl.
The MESS Synthesiser Orchestra brings together an almost impossible array of cutting edge synthesisers – also called synths – spanning from the 1960s to the present day. Performing as one ensemble for Live at the Bowl, this will be one of the largest gatherings of these iconic electronic musical instruments ever seen on stage.
Co-founder of the Melbourne Electronic Sound Studio (MESS) Robin Fox says this unique performance event reflects the diversity of sounds from yesterday, today and tomorrow in an ecstatic show of togetherness and community.
“The inauguration of the MESS Synthesiser Orchestra signals the beginning of a series of mass activations of the MESS collection at an extraordinary scale. There will be an incredible array of electronic instruments from right across the history of electronic music on stage – some for the first time in many decades. This is a unique and rare opportunity for audiences; we want to show them that electronic music is not just one thing. It is in fact a multiplicity of techniques, approaches and sensibilities which have revolutionised the way in which we listen to and understand sound and music,” says Fox.
Audiences will be entranced by Magnitudes – conducted by Mat Watson – a performance event which makes use of 40 synths and 16 performers in the newly formed MESS Synthesiser Orchestra.
“Magnitudes moves through tonal, textural, melodic, harmonic, abstract and absurd themes to reveal itself across multiple movements. Expect intense sound phenomena and complete chaos giving way to moments of stillness and feelings of euphoria. I feel incredibly excited about performing this work with such a talented group of artists at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl. It’ll be a wild time!” says Watson.
MESS at the Bowl will also see a sweeping line-up of local talent performing exciting sonic explorations with sets from Simona Castricum, R. Rebeiro (My Disco/Downwards), Naretha Williams (Blak Mass), OK EG and the legendary sound of Artificial (Nicole Skeltys/B(if)tek), with live visuals by Carla Zimbler.
Despite a brutal year of lockdown and isolation, musical talent still runs deep in Melbourne and MESS at the Bowl is the celebration that music lovers and musicians of all kinds have been missing.
“One thing is certain. MESS loves them all. MESS is genre agnostic. Sound is sound and everything is available for creative deployment,” says Fox.
MESS is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to giving everyone access to the entire history of electronic music in instrumental form. MESS is the custodian of a museum grade collection of hundreds of synthesisers, drum machines and every variety of electronic sound making device. For more information visit mess.foundation

Where are you currently based?
I’m currently based in Bergen, Norway. I moved here 10 years ago to study and ended up moving here permanently. It’s actually one of the cities in Norway with the most rain. Guess that helps out if you want to sit inside and make music 🙂
What’s been happening recently and how has your Covid experience been so far?
Oh, where to begin. The past year has been pretty special. I’ve had sessions over Teams and been at home for the most part. Really looking forward to start playing festivals and shows again!
How did you first start playing music?
I started as a DJ just for fun in 2009, and after a couple of years I decided to try out producing. A lot of YouTube tutorials and so on. I still perform as a DJ, but my main focus is producing at the moment.
Lovespeake and yourself have a new single ‘Me In The Middle’ on the way, how did you come to collaborate with Lovespeake?
We first met at a songwriting camp hosted by Sony Music in Oslo. Made a quick demo together and decided to work again later. So, when I heard his draft of “Me In The Middle” I was sold!
What influenced the sound and songwriting for this track?
We want the listener to feel energized and listen to the track when they try to achieve a goal. At the gym, studies, work etc. I think this motivation helped us shape the track to how it sounds today. I heard our first demo over and over at the gym and came up with new ideas every time.
How did Lovespeake and yourself create Me In The Middle?
I heard his vocal draft of the song in the end of 2019. We sat a session with Jesper Borgen in Oslo and met up to write new verses and start to set the arrangement. Later we worked over Teams and sent ideas back and forth. We tried to set a couple of sessions in Oslo during the pandemic, but every date we planned landed on a new quarantine, so we finished it with online sessions. Luckily, we had similar ideas for the track, so this didn´t slow us down.
What programs/instruments did you use?
I work in Ableton Live, and on this project I used a lot of Serum and Kontakt for the “future bass”-sound with decapitator/devil-loc to crush the synths a little extra. For the verses and pre-chorus Jesper Borgen played piano/guitar over the synths to get the human feel, and then we fooled around with different recordings of stuff in the studio to make the percussion unique.
How did you approach the recording/
We did the vocal recordings at Jesper´s studio in Oslo, and I also presented my first draft of the drop there. After that I continued the production at home and we sent the files to each other. The master is done by Chris Samson at Propeller Mastering in Oslo.
What did you find most challenging and rewarding during the creative process?
The distance is of course the biggest challenge in this situation, and I think the most rewarding is that I learned to do online sessions. Have a few really nice ideas ready.
What do you like to do away from music?
Now that we have a lot of snow here in Norway, I like to spend time skiing in the mountains. It´s one of the few activities we can do and still keep the social distancing.
Who are you listening to at the moment?
I´ve been listening to Seeb´s new album lately. It´s so good.
What’s planned for 2021
I do have some festivals planned, but we will have to see how the pandemic goes and hope for the best. Other than that, I´m very excited to release some new music this year!
Favourite food and place to hangout?
I love the food at Fly Chicken in Bergen. Fried chicken burger with jalapeno fries. Best there is!
“The new record rushes like a runaway ghost train, eagerly shifting between funk, horrorcore stadium rock, pop, grunge and electronic.” – The Independent
“From the horror-rave of The Dead Walk to the blood-spattered rock riffs of Cemetery and Skeleton, there are plenty of dark treats here to soundtrack fearful, sleepless nights.” – Kerrang!
“Immersive and powerful…. It’s the sound of genius, lurking in the shadows.” – Metal Hammer
” He’s never met a supernatural entity he can’t pair with thumping darktronica and stalking rock guitar.” – MOJO
“This third engrossing outing conjures worlds from chilly, pulsing synths and waspish guitar.” – Uncut
“Irresistible and viscerally pleasing… Thoroughly captivating.” – The Wire
“The familiar, leaden pulses and the odd skittering rhythms still have the power to make the skin itch and the listener wonder just what it is they can see out of the corner of their eye.” – Prog
“The fact that he’s still creating — and that it’s this vital, this vicious, and this urgent — only further fulfills his moniker as the Master.” – Consequence of Sound
“Neon-tinged, dance floor-friendly menace.” – AV Club
John Carpenter releases his third studio album of “soundtracks for the movies in your mind”, ‘Lost Themes III: Alive After Death’ via Sacred Bones Records.

Underpinning Carpenter’s renaissance as a musician has been his collaboration with Cody Carpenter and Daniel Davies. They’ve composed and performed as a trio since the first ‘Lost Themes’ album in 2015: on studio albums, on soundtracks, and onstage. Here, the trio reaches a new level of creative mind meld. Richly rendered worlds are built in the interplay between Davies’s guitar and the duelling synthesisers played by the Carpenters.
“We begin with a theme, a bass line, a pad, something that sounds good and will lead us to the next layer,” John says of the trio’s process. “We then just keep adding on from there. We understand each other’s strengths and weaknesses, how to communicate without words, and the process is easier now than it was in the beginning. We’ve matured.”
Much has changed in the trio’s musical life since 2016’s ‘Lost Themes II’. Following the release of that album, the group went on their first-ever concert tour, performing material from the ‘Lost Themes’ albums, as well as music from Carpenter’s classic film scores. They re-recorded many of those classic movie themes for 2017’s ‘Anthology’ album. The following year, John was asked to executive produce and compose the music for the new Halloween movie directed by David Gordon Green, which promptly became the highest-grossing instalment in the series. Whereas the original ‘Lost Themes’ album came as a surprise after years of relative silence from Carpenter, the third instalment sees him in the midst of a resurgent moment as a cultural force. The 2018 ‘Halloween’ score gave his music its biggest audience in decades, and the world he releases his new album into is one that has, at long last, given him the credit he deserves as a founding father of modern electronic music.

SUPPORT FOR ‘CARAMEL SLICE’
“Infectious downbeat psychedelia that’s bursting with groove.”
– Deafen County (AUS)
“It’s a mesmerising, bare bones, jammy type one that had me daydreaming. Oh and thanks, now i feel like a caramel slice.”
– Declan Byrne – triple j (AUS)
“I always go for the caramel slice at the bakery as my go-to treat, and this song is just that – woozy, rich and leaves you feeling full as a goog.”
– Pip Rasmussen – triple j Unearthed (AUS)
Following on from their critically praised single ‘Pomegranate’, Sydney-based indie-rock quartet Silky Roads have just unveiled their soothing new single ‘Caramel Slice’.
Channelling a surf-rock infused vigour, ‘Caramel Slice’ bursts with an explosion of sunshine, as reverb-soaked guitars and spacious percussion playfully intertwine. As the track unfolds, subtle fuzz-laden verses effortlessly build into a soaring chorus, capping off a meticulously composed psych-pop number.
Silky Roads talks about the meaning behind ‘Caramel Slice’:
“‘Caramel Slice’ was written during the Black Summer fires; Lyrically the song expresses how we felt fed up with the blind eye that the people in power give towards global issues. We thought it was fitting to add sirens and commotion, as well as a surprise uproar at the end to further translate this point. However, as always, the meaning of the song is up to the listeners interpretation.”
Previous single ‘Pomegranate’ was embraced by Australian radio stations triple j, triple j Unearthed, 4ZZZ and Radio Adelaide. The track also received support from online blogs Atwood Magazine (USA), The Soundcheck, Forte Magazine, AAA Backstage and Something You Said.
While they’ve only been a band for a short period, Silky Roads have shown themselves to be a prolific up and comers. The four songwriters take inspiration from the likes of Ocean Alley, Lime Cordiale and Mako Road, creating a unique blend of indie and psych-rock, with further releases on the horizon for 2021.

Super-producer SJUR has teamed up with Lovespeake, to create an uplifting new anthem – ‘Me In The Middle’. The song is released via Sony Music Norway on February 5.
Bergen native SJUR has been rising through the ranks of Scandinavia’s unbeatable electronic scene over the last few years, and with over 186 million streams under his belt it’s no secret that his music instantly connects. Lovespeake, who is considered the leading topline writer and singer in Norway, recently collaborated with David Guetta’s huge hit ‘Save My Life’.
The song was created on a cold winter’s day in a studio in Oslo last year.
SJUR and Lovespeake started working on the song in fellow producer and songwriter Jesper Borgen’s studio on a cold winter day in Oslo last year.
“For me, this is a very motivating song. It is about being able to achieve your goals and focus enough on yourself in order to achieve these. I have worked with Lovespeake on several sessions before and he is very skilled. And, with Jesper joining us we became a really good team”- SJUR
Hailing from a small town on the west coast of Norway, SJUR can show for great success with over 186 million streams on Spotify, including releases like, What Do I Do and Rich & Famous with Isac Elliot. His cover of “Let Me Love You” by Mario has gained over 100 million streams on Spotify alone, and entered the charts in both Norway, Canada, Finland, Denmark, Holland and Sweden.

DESTIINO – ‘AFSILA’
LUMIÈRE NOIRE RECORDS
______________________________
Announced today, French electronic producer Pierre-Alexandre Busson, better known as Yuksek, reveals the first details of his new alias, Destiino. Sharing the inaugural taster of the project, Destiino’s debut single, ‘Afsila’ is out now via Chloé’s Lumière Noire Records. ‘Afsila’ is the first track taken from a soon to be released EP of the same name on February 19th.
The origins of the project and Yuksek’s tormented alter-ego of Destiino revert back to 2017, when the Rheims-born electronic producer was invited to take part in a unique experiment – a residence at visual artist Xavier Veilhan’s Studio Venezia. The installation, as part of The 57th Venice Biennale, invited musicians to make use of its instruments in order to compose live in front of an audience.
Inspired by the spontaneity and improvising nature of the experience, Yuksek returned home with a new sonic focus to push the limits of his artistic boundaries, break conventional creative processes and surrender to spontaneity by recording improvised tracks in one sequence on his armada of analogue machines.
“Destiino is Yuksek’s alter ego, it came out straight from the synthesizers PCB, without over thinking. It’s the result of lonely recording sessions when I pushed the ‘stop recording button’ when exhausted. It also came out of public recording sessions at Xavier Veilhan exhibition in Venice Biennale. I could hardly describe the style, but I can only say that it’s most of the time one shot recording, nearly no editing, like sur-realist’s automatic writing, like joy in the machine.” – Destiino
Embarking on a series of experimental music sessions between Venice and Yuksek’s studio in Rheims, the output very almost didn’t see the light of day. By his own admission, Yuksek didn’t quite know what to make of the unclassifiable tracks, which comprised both of pieces that were too moody for dance-music labels and others that were too club-focused for more experimental imprints. It was with Lumière Noire, a label that defies classification, that the project found an open ear.
Along with label boss Chloé, who shares an equal love and inclination towards shifting away from club formatted sounds and holding a deep appreciation for narrating stories with music, Yuksek created edited versions of his recordings which withhold the desired raw musical feel. As time-progressed and ideas between the two artists were exchanged and flourishing, the Destiino project was born.
Dark atmospheres and frantic melodies conjured by the unmistakable aura of analogue hardware create a body of music which encompasses experimental sounds from lo-fi, to electronica, cinematic scores and acid-tinged techno.
With more Destiino music forthcoming this year, ‘Afsila’ is out now via Lumière Noire Records.

“I’ve said it previously but I’m gonna keep saying it – Yibby is one of the strongest voices in the vanguard of Sydney hip-hop right now. Pay attention.” – Tommy Faith, triple j Unearthed

STREAM ‘CIGAR FT LORD APEX’ HERE
Further showcasing his disparate nature, idiosyncratic rapper YIBBY returns for his first offering of 2021 in the form of the hazy, boom bap track ‘Cigar’ featuring prolific London powerhouse Lord Apex.
Driven by a trap inspired beat from regular collaborators Clockwork Odyssey, ‘Cigar’ addresses the differences between the real and what’s a facade. Of the track’s main line, YIBBY says “I got the cigar line from that saying “close but no cigar” I actually thought the saying was “all smoke and no cigar” until I read up, but I liked it too much, so I kept it haha.”
With the constraints of border closures, this international alliance came together entirely over the internet with YIBBY stating “I’ve been listening to Apex heavy for a couple years now, so when I heard that beat and how it was really murky but also had a bounce I knew I wanted him on it, so I hit him up. I tried to do the hook too but as soon as I heard his tone on it, it was a wrap.”
Forever a melting pot of genres, YIBBY’s music always comes accompanied with coming of age tales and food for thought bars. His debut single ‘Woah’ came in late 2018 signalling the start of a rapid fire first year for the now 21-year-old which consisted of the Lost In Translation EP and a hard-hitting team up with fellow up-and-comer Raj Mahal.
Quickly gaining recognition from fans and media, in 2019 he came in at #14 on FBi Radio’s Most Played Artists. He also left his mark on triple j’s Bars of Steel and FBi Radio’s Independent Play series whilst garnering fans from Sniffers, Tone Deaf, Life Without Andy, Purple Sneakers and more. Single ‘Folk’, pulled from his debut EP, was added to spot rotation on triple j, as well as full adds on triple j Unearthed, FBi Radio, SYN Radio, 4ZZZ and EDGE Radio, and spins on Beats Radio 1.
Last year his major release ‘No Sweat’ was added to Spotify’s tastemaker playlists Local Hype, Beats n’ Bars and The Drip and was included in The Guardian’s Best Music for May.
On the live circuit he’s cut his teeth supporting Winston Surfshirt, Boo Seeka, Drapht, Arno Faraji, Milan Ring and Kuren as well as performing a show-stopping set at Bad Friday Festival.

On collaborating with the Thornhill vocalist, Bergin explains that it comes full circle over five years after Jacob originally approached him to collab.
“About 5 years ago Jacob approached me after one of our hometown shows and asked if I wanted to do guest vocals on his new, up-and-coming band’s track. I’m pretty sure I said yeah, but forgot all about it until a good half a year later when our videographer Cian called and told me I had to come down to do guest vocals on this band that he was working with. The band in question ended up being Jacob and the rest of Thornhill tracking their debut EP, so I’m glad I listened to Cian for once,” he laughs.
Jacob adds that 2020 found the friends working on multiple creative ventures together outside of their respective bands.
“Jumping on this track was kind of like a little break for us both where we had the opportunity to build on something that had already been created,” he says. “Aside from that I was honestly super stoked to be a part of the project in general, VOV have always played a special part in Thornhill’s history so it was very cool to be included on a special part of their history.”
