Leaps

written by the partae

Where are you currently based?

South London.

How did you first start playing music?

Growing up in a musical household I was exposed to a variety of music. I started playing the drums at the early age of 8, and played in Jazz, Rock bands and eventually an orchestra at the start of secondary school. This really laid down the foundations of my musical experience and opened me up to different ways of interpreting sound. My dad is a big lover of rare vintage synthesisers dating back to the 70’s to present day, but it’s only when I started Goldsmiths University I really got me into his collection, and I rediscovered a new side to my passion for electronic production.

What’s been happening recently and how has your Covid experience been?

Currently working on new music with NULA , whilst also working on the Leaps project and a variety of talented artists remotely, which has been an amazing experience so far. Although it’s all been mostly online due to covid restrictions, it unlocked a new sense of creativity which is exciting. Covid has been a challenging time mentally but also a time to be productive –  I really miss gigs, seeing friends etc. In some ways It’s also been a great time to make music and really get stuck in.

Your new single ‘Miles Apart’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

At the core my favourite soundscapes exist in music created by artists such as Boards of Canada, SBTRKT, Four Tet, Bicep and I’m also a big fan of 90’s electronic music in the vein of Aphex Twin, Faithless…etc. Sonically these are the landmarks that I identify with usually when thinking about grooves and sound depth. I love emotive melodies and cinematic production so anything that fits in between is usually the direction I go in.

How did you go about writing Miles Apart?

I wrote the track quite quickly, I started messing around with a Juno 106 and ended up building it on a garage beat. I pulled it apart and anchored the track with a piano riff which triggered an emotion that felt distant, I went on a journey and allowed the sounds to naturally dictate where I went next.

Where and when did you record/producer/master and who with?

I recorded, mixed and mastered the track myself in my bedroom.

What programs/equipment did you use?

I used Ableton as the main DAW and explored with a Pro-One Synth and Juno – Really into vintage synthesizers and sampling.

What does Miles Apart mean to you?

The uncertainty of not knowing how someone really feels about you.

And its self released what was the thinking behind that?

I wanted the first set of singles to be self released under my newly discovered label ‘Leaps and Bounds’. We live in a day and age where independent artists can do a lot themselves with hardwork and dedication. It just felt right for the first set of singles, in the future I would be open to releasing off a seperate label.

Please tell us about your recent work with live project Nula:

Nadiah and I have been writing a set of singles, we are looking to release another single in April which is exciting. We have quite a few exciting things in the pipeline we look forward to sharing over the course of this year.

How has your Leaps project evolved in direction since starting?

It’s all been a natural progression going into this project, I think I can only keep going in an upward trajectory as I continue exploring and evolving over time. I’d like to eventually work with other artists and collaborate as I believe that there is always more magic to be discovered.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Jacques Greene, BICEP, Fred Again.., DJ Seinfeld, Logic1000, Ross From Friends, Four Tet.

What do you like to do away from music?

Been getting into Skateboarding again, I’ve always had a passion for it – Also love the new Tony Hawk skate game. A classic.

What’s planned for 2021?

Planning on releasing my debut EP which I’m really excited for and currently working on more singles to release towards the end of the year. Hopefully when live shows can resume again I’d like to do some DJ sets, gigs and maybe festivals in the summer. Until then I’m enjoying the ride.

‘Leaps – Miles Apart’ is out now via Leaps and Bounds’

ALAN BRAXE – ‘IN LOVE WITH YOU’ FEAT. ROMOULD (ALAN BRAXE REMIX)
OUT NOW

LISTEN HERE

In 2003 Alan Braxe and friend Romauld teamed up as ‘The Paradise’ to release ‘In Love With You’, a track that fast became an underground classic of its time. It was held much to critical acclaim, with global support from artists such as Justice, Armand Van Helden, Duke Dumont, Breakbot and more.

Since its release, Alan Braxe has been playing an alternative version of the original in clubs, keeping it as a secret and personal tool in the mechanism of his beloved DJ sets.

Now, after 12 years Braxe shares the record with the rest of the world, as he releases ‘In Love With You’ Featuring Romauld (Alan Braxe Remix) on his own Vulture Music.

“Since 2009 I’ve been playing an alternative version of the song in clubs featuring Romuald’s vocals that were not in the original.  This new version was originally created in a hotel room, last minute before a DJ set. It’s quite repetitive, almost absurd, you could say ‘French House’ in fact. While the pandemic has forced live music to cease at the moment and I can no longer play it in clubs, we both thought that the time has come to release it.”
Alan Braxe

Alan Braxe is a name synonymous with fabricating Frances’ electronic music scene and has since remained one of ‘French Touch’ house’s seminal characters. With a consistent flow of output over the last two decades, Braxe has always been able to maintain the relevance of his music that boasts 100 influential titles; his rework of ‘In Love With You’ continues to demonstrate his pioneering house sound.

From the very beginning of his career, Alan Braxe embraced Paris’ underground nightclub scene as a focal point for his sound which then saw him form a creative partnership with Daft Punk’s Thomas Bangalter. The duo that officially started out with ‘Vertigo’; Braxe’s first single, released via Bangalter’s ‘Roulé’ imprint in 1997, went on to define the one-off alliance that produced the mainstream cultural phenomenon ‘Music Sounds Better With You’ as Stardust.

Continuing the spread of his influence throughout his career, Braxe’s ‘Vulture’ label has provided a futurist, open and musically free space for diverse and talented artists such as Lifelike and Kris Menace. The imprint, which was re-launched last year with Alan Braxe’s ‘The Ascent’ EP’ has been a platform for his own releases as well as powerful collaborations with the likes of Fred Falke.

Lending his vocals on the track, Romauld has been an active singer in the French music scene for the last 20 years. He has also released on Braxe’s Vulture, as well as titles such as Kitsuné and Edbanger. Romauld’s ability to capture the essence of emotion in as little as few notes has led him to work on projects such as Justice’s ‘Woman’ and ‘Woman Worldwide’ LP’s: a collaboration that opened the door to him entering the select club of Grammy Awarded honoured artists.

Showing no sign of slowing the paradigm of his creative output, Alan Braxe excels his release of ‘In Love With You’ into 2021 and beyond.

Artists: Acebergtm
Title: Danca
Label: SJW Entertainment

Download / Stream

Acebergtm returns to one of Africa‘s fastest-growing entertainment companies SJW Entertainment as its hottest new artist, who makes an impressive entrance into 2021 with his first single of the year “Danca,” which also announces the future EP. With a sultry voice reminiscent of artists like Drake and J.Cole, who also happen to be his biggest inspirations, Acebergtm fuses groovy melodies and gentle R&B-inspired beats to make “Danca” a single that is made for heating up the dancefloor or simply listening to over a strong drink. The track offers a peek into this talented startup artist’s style and global influences, which are displayed over the course of new songs on the upcoming “Far From Home” EP. Press play on “Danca” and let Acebergtm introduce himself.

“As a kid growing up in a city populated with creatives, ‘Far From Home‘ was inspired by the thought of me trying to be abstract. As a rapper trying to show more versatility and fitting into my own niche in the music industry. The EP represents a journey, untold stories, and the passion for being extraordinary” – Acebergtm

Hailing from Lagos, Nigeria, Acebergtm grew up with exposure to a variety of different music genres and fell in love with hip-hop and rap, citing Wyclef Jean as one of his earliest inspirations. In tandem with music was his passion for writing and poetry, which led him to begin writing his own songs at age 15. He eventually entered the studio circuit, networking with different producers and fledgling artists such as Kel P, Phantom and Tempoe, WineXroll, JFred, Fredibeat, Oshobeats, Mcomms, Graydon. During those early years, he cut his teeth as both a rapper and a singer in the Nigerian music scene. Now ready to take on a global circuit, Acebergtm makes a strong debut with “Far From Home,” and we can’t wait to see what the future holds for him.

Colonel Mustard & The Dijon 5

by the partae March 27, 2021
written by the partae

Scottish party starters Colonel Mustard & The Dijon 5 have announced their new album ‘The Difficult Number 2’released on 30th April digitally and on special limited-edition vinyl.

Produced by Paul Gallagher – front of house engineer for synth-pop pioneers CHVRCHES – the new album features a whole host of eclectic guests from Larry Love (Alabama 3) to Gavin Mitchell (Still Game), combining a mixture of tried and tested fan favourites with brand new tracks featuring the band’s signature singalong magic. The lead single, G.T., was championed by BBC 6 Music’s Amy Lamé, as was follow-up single Ted Dancin’ which reached No.7 in the Scottish Charts.

Big, warm and immediately uplifting, The Difficult Number 2 was born out of a love for dance music, affirming the eleven-strong outfit as joyful, genre-hopping purveyors of music to move your feet to.

It’s preceded by the EP ‘This Is Your House’ which is out today and features  dance music icon Mary Kiani and Dopesick Fly frontman Ant Thomaz and a remix from Micky Modelle

Listen to the EP here and buy it here now.

We caught up with John McAlinden, aka The Colonel to hear more…

Where is the band currently based?

We’re like Neapolitan ice cream a mixture of Glasgow , North Lanarkshire and Ayrshire. People can make their own assumptions on which area we consider to be chocolate, strawberry and vanilla.

When was the full band first formed?

It was the 10-year anniversary of our first gig last year, but for a while we were a massive collective sometimes up to 20 bodies, wild but brilliant days. There were points that different people in the band hadn’t met each other until they were onstage playing a gig together. In the last 3 years we’re down to a starting 11 with a couple of subs and it’s the best we’ve sounded , but the collective chaos years were fun.

What influenced the sound of your second album, The Difficult Number 2?

Some  songs I can’t pinpoint the exact influences like Ted Dancin and Peace Love & Mustard it’s more about fun happy vibes, community and dancing, but other songs have more obvious influences, part of what we do is to hop in and out of different genres. G.T. – Bowie/The Beatles/Elton John,  Cross The Road – Toots and The Maytals/Madness/Road Safety, Funkier Than Funk – James Brown/Funkadelic/INXS, we were lucky 2 of our heroes agreed to sing on the album Mary Kiani who used to sing with TTF and is now based in Australia. We love our dance music , a few of us would go to every night we could in the Arches nightclub in Glasgow and the song This Is Your House name checks all the nights we loved there Colours, Inside Out, Slam, Relief, Pressure , Death Disco. The Arches was a special place. Larry Love from Alabama 3 sings on Country As Muck,(Country As Fuck if you buy the vinyl). Alabama 3 are one of the best bands of all time. Unique bringing Acid House and Country Music together,  inspired and inspiring to us.

What inspired the title of the album?

We couldn’t decide on a working title, but I came out with The Difficult Number 2 to the band and they all laughed and liked it, so that stuck. As a band we focused most of our energies on being the best live act we could be and there are so many of us, it can take time to get a consensus or get everyone on board working on songs. It’s taken 7 years to bring out a 2nd album. Other bands have split up , got back together and recorded a 2nd album quicker than it’s taken us to do ours. It’s just seeing the funny side of how shit that is. Most bands 2nd album doesn’t live up to the 1st, but Garry John gaffer from our label Button Up calls it a greatest hits album because half the songs we play live and we know our audience loves them, so I think it’s been worth the wait. We’ve got enough new songs to give folk something fresh and exciting. I also like the fact the word cult is in difficult as we’ve often been accused of being one.

What’s the creative process like for a band of eleven?

Every song is different. My cousin Gary who plays bass , but started on keys then moved to guitar writes 1 classic song a year. Pretty much fully formed other than lyrics and melody and I come up with those. Cross the Road started just as a song I would sing to my kids , but then I came into jamming and the guys were playing a reggae/ska groove and it just fitted well on that. Some songs develop like Disco Colin , that we jammed then played live,  but without set parts,  but once we’re in the studio recording the brass will spend time working on parts and we all tend to step our game up. This is Your House and We Are The Dinosaurs were fun ones because we developed them further when in recording the album. Gal our producer has loads of amazing synths and drum machines as well as ideas, so we all enjoyed messing about with his gadgets. I write lyrics most days  so it’s generally something I’ve been writing about that will make its way into a song if I’ve got a message or idea I want to convey, or just some nonsense or something I find funny that I hope comments with people. If a lyric comes with a melody normally I’m onto a winner.

When was the album recorded and how did you approach the production process?

We recorded it before lockdown over the course of about a year, just occasional weekends and days here and there. Gal who produced it, helped inspire us to try new things and up our game and take the sound to a different level. The band all had input , but by the time we had everything recorded. It would mainly be me , Gal and Disco Colin(Keyboard) sitting listening, bringing things in and out. Doing that as a 3 was a good thing as its democracy in action. My philosophy is to serve the song. If your idea isn’t the best for the song you need to put your ego to the side.

How has a band so renowned for their live shows been coping over lockdown?

We’ve all had our ups and downs , but I think we’re all in a pretty good place at the moment, we’re lucky we all have day jobs so it wasn’t as difficult for us, as other musicians and crew. There are more important things going on and we know when live music returns we’ll be part of bringing happiness to people, so we’re really looking forward to that. As a band that’s been together for a long time it’s probably been a healthy thing to have some space for a while, as we can appreciate each other and what we do collectively more. It’s not how we planned it , but you need to try and take some positives out of negatives if you can.

Where are you most excited to play live when the time comes?

Festivals, festivals , festivals. All the festivals!!! Playground , Belladrum , Party In The Park, Party at The Palace , Lindisfarne and Woodzstock.

What track off the new album are you most excited to play to a live crowd and why?

Ted Dancin’, loads of 6th Dijon have sent us videos of them dancing around their houses to it. Folk are going to go wild for it live. This Is Your House and We Are The Dinosaurs as well, just to see what happens , how the crowds react and what interaction and connection we get with them.

What does the rest of 2021 hold for the Dijon 5?

We were lucky to get some funding from Creative Scotland to do an album launch streaming gig from our spiritual home the Glasgow Barrowland Ballroom, that will go out on the 1st of May. We’re recording in the Barras Market as well as the Ballroom and parts of the building, so will be great for folk to see different bits of the Barras they’ve never seen before, with some history, comedy and usual Dijon visual explosion, because there’s no crowd we’re pulling out all the stops so it’s all singing all dancing, all kicking our own height. After that any live music at all even if that’s playing in peoples gardens.

Following the release of two striking singles, Madrid’s experimental live electronic act Jus Kno’ celebrate the release of their debut studio album ‘Looped Circles’.  Exploring innovative electronic elements over the 9-cut body of work, the album represents the culmination of years of practice honing their craft. Comprised of sounds hailing across IDM, house and techno, the album transcends genres while boasting a signature sound that is quintessentially Jus Kno’.  The album is available on all streaming platforms on March 26th 2021 via independent Spanish label Faneca Music and marks a major milestone in the Madrid based act’s careers.

JUS KNO'With ‘Looped Circles’ ultimate unveiling being preceded by two striking singles, the title track and “Time Will Come”, the coupling set the stage for the album’s remaining 7 unreleased tracks. Opening with a sultry, brooding five minute “Intro” peppered with breakbeat percussion, piano and bass the track paves way for “Winden” – a strong, synth-lead, high energy cut shifting basslines from 4/4 to Drum N’ Bass. “Winden” in particular is a track brimming in variety that showcases Jus Kno’s diverse skillset.

“Hole” comes in two parts, opening with eclectic arpeggio, romantic, driving and deep in nature built upon a solid house infrastructure. “Hole II” creates contrast from its compliment, featuring a lengthy build of melody and pizzicato of over three minutes, the impending relentless techno drop drives the two part “Hole” and “Hole II” series to its’ closure. “New Normal” incorporates organic instrumentals through its introduction paving way for strong synth lead – creating continuity through its duration with melodic guitar throughout, following the theme of shifting percussive styles the track features live drumming across its six and a half minute running time.

Slowing the pace just past the half way point, “A Place For Us” encapsulates an aura of melancholy and yearning; home to sultry chord progressions and slower tempos.  The final piece unreleased material, “Contact” is slow, steady and ethereal and followed by the two previously released singles “Time Will Come” and “Looped Circles” that bring Jus Kno’s first full body of work to its ultimate close.

Complimented by substantial audio-visual content, music videos, abstract visualizers and live performance footage breathe life into the album, conveying the duo’s innovative production and performance style as well as the full bodied vision for their identity.  Expect more video content to make its’ way through the pipeline in the weeks following ‘Looped Circles’ release.

ELI DAN ‘JUST ANOTHER LOVE SONG’

by the partae March 26, 2021
written by the partae

Following the massive success of their debut single Treading Water, a finalist in the  2019 International Song Competition, Eli Dan look set to build on their incredible  achievements with the release of Just Another Love Song. The new release blends  acoustic elements with an electronic aesthetic to generate a luminous contemporary  pop track with a universal heartbeat. This poignant and powerful song posits the age

old question: ‘Is it better to have loved or not have loved at all?’ Featuring the pop  sensibilities of Elisha Apurado’s (Eli) extraordinary musical prowess and the folk based roots style of consummate musician Danny Hacket (Dan), Eli Dan becomes a  unifying artistic force, exploring a genre that’s a cross-pollination of Sara Bareilles,  John Mayer, LAUV and Vera Blue. From the opening synth pulses to the soaring  cadences of the encapsulating last chorus, Just Another Love Song skilfully fuses  rousing dynamics, melodic finesse, and Eli’s emotional charged vocal performance to  breathe new life into a subject matter that affects us all. No, Just Another Love Song  is not just another love song but a passionate reaffirmation of a new kind of ode to  modern love.

For Those I Love, the brainchild of Dublin producer and songwriter David Balfe, today shares with the world his critically acclaimed debut album. For Those I Love is available now on LP, CD, and DL via September Recordings. Listen HERE.

At its core, the album pays tribute to Dave’s best friend and former bandmate, Paul Curran, who passed away in 2018. Following Paul’s tragic death, Dave locked himself away in his home studio for months, ultimately recording over 76 songs that would eventually be condensed down to form the basis of his debut album. The result is an incredibly beautiful, raw, and uncompromising 9-track project addressing grief and catharsis, an important record that could only emerge from an entirely honest place.

Introduced to the world last year through the hard-nosed, beautiful eulogy of debut single ‘I Have A Love‘ and the socio-political ruminations of its follow-up ‘Top Scheme‘, early 2021 he announced the details of his much-anticipated debut album via September Recordings alongside a third single, the electric ‘Birthday / The Pain‘, paired to a remarkable video forged through a process called photogrammetry.

Alongside significant breakthroughs at press and radio over the last year, David performed live for the first time ever under the For Those I Love moniker in November on Later… with Jools Holland, delivering a performance ingrained with such emotional weight that For Those I Love was to go on to trend on Twitter soon afterward.

David first began work on For Those I Love as a chance to write frankly about the struggles he and his friends faced while growing up in north Dublin. Anecdotally and otherwise, For Those I Love documents the harsh realities of daily life up against it and holds a mirror up to the clear disparity between a working-class upbringing and the lack of opportunity that remains to this day. The self-titled debut album from For Those I Love is out now on September Recordings.

Purient, Naarm/Melbourne-based producer-vocalist, today shares her debut EP Memories, released via Burning Rose / Pelvis Records. Listen HERE.

Completing with the previously released title track and ‘Fantasy‘ is ‘Sad‘, the first song Durman ever wrote as Purient, that serves as a reminder of her growth over time, and remixes from Eartheater, aka NY-based Alexandra Drewchin, and Varg²™, Swedish producer Jonas Rönnberg, who twist and manipulate the originals into new depths of sound. Eartheater‘s remix of ‘Memories‘ sees the original reworked and deconstructed into entirely new production, with additional vocals by the Drewchin; Varg²™‘s re-animation of ‘Fantasy‘ turns the breathless love song into a high caliber club banger.

With the release, Durman shares “I’m so grateful to be releasing my debut EP to the world today, I hope you love it.”

Both experimental and stylishly unpredictable, Kate Durman has worked carefully over the last few years to hone her craft, quickly establishing herself as a regular fixture in her local scene and member of Australian via LA label Burning Rose. Through her music, Purient subverts traditional pop forms to deliver an introverted, brooding, and purposeful sound, delicately complemented by gauzy vocals. Traversing her own thoughts with uncanny attention to detail, her visceral productions are reminiscent of Kelly Lee Owens’ meditative melodies, Smerz’s concentrated chaos, and the subtle trance of Daniel Avery. Get aquatinted with the burgeoning producer who arrives with her remarkable debut EP.

The Offspring Debut Music Video For ‘Let The Bad Times Roll’

by the partae March 26, 2021
written by the partae

FORTHCOMING ALBUM LET THE BAD TIMES ROLL OUT APRIL 16
PRE-ORDER THE ALBUM HERE

Today, SoCal icons and one of the best-selling punk rock bands of all time, The Offspring, have unveiled the accompanying music video for their recently released single Let The Bad Times Roll, the title track from their highly anticipated tenth studio album coming April 16, 2021 via Concord Records. The multi-format smash was added ATB to Triple M nationally in Australia and has vaulted to the top of US Rock and Alternative radio charting at #11 and #25, respectively, just four short weeks after its release and continues to climb with no signs of slowing down. Let The Bad Times Roll was the #1 most-added at Rock radio for two weeks in a row upon release and has racked up nearly 4 million global streams to date. Fans and critics alike applauded the band’s new music with Rolling Stone hailing it a “return to their signature mix of guileless pop-punk and forked-tongue irony,” Loudwire describing it as “a hand-clapper that shifts from raucous acoustic-driven passages to the band’s familiar punk sensibilities all while pointing the finger at the ills of the world today,” and Alternative Press proclaiming, “the countdown for The Offspring’s next album has officially begun.”

True to the irreverence at the core of punk rock music, the music video delivers a contemporary narrative tied to the song’s topical lyrics that reflect the ongoing challenges being faced across the country today.

Legends and innovators of the Southern California punk rock scene, The Offspring have sold more than 40 million albums worldwide, won countless awards, and have toured consistently, playing more than 500 shows in the last decade alone.  Their music has had a lasting impact across film, television, and video games, but the band turned their focus to a new album release in 2021. The band is comprised of singer Dexter Holland, guitarist Noodles, drummer Pete Parada and new bassist Todd Morse.

MILA NILE UNLEASHES GLORIOUS SELF-LOVE ANTHEM ‘DON’T NEED YOUR LOVE’

SUPPORT FOR ‘DON’T NEED YOUR LOVE’

“Nile combines percussion-fuelled minimalistic pop prowess with empowering lyrics about defining your own self perception in today’s social media minefield.”
Music Feeds (AUS)

“Those vocals are magnetic!! A groove I could get down to on a Friday arvo, but also a Monday morning! Strong topic, but the song gives me “Feel good” energy!” – 4/5 stars
Tom Forrest – triple j Unearthed (AUS)

Sydney-based, Scandi-born pop songstress Mila Nile has just revealed her tantalising new single ‘Don’t Need Your Love’ – produced by LA-based collaborator HVTCH.

Enveloping the listener in alluring samples and deft percussion, ‘Don’t Need Your Love’ is a liberating slice of dance-pop that invigorates and builds through luscious basslines and syncopated beats. As the track unfolds, its dynamic choruses crescendo towards its rapid bridge and cathartic dance floor-filler finale.

Mila talks about the meaning behind ‘Don’t Need Your Love’:

“It’s about a toxic relationship, but not with a person, with a feeling – validation. I wrote ‘Don’t Need Your Love’ as an anthem to remind myself that I’m good enough and that my worth isn’t based on others’ perceptions of me. Some days can feel like every mirror shows you’re not good enough, every app tells you’re not interesting enough, and people in your life can make you feel not worthy enough. If you make music, it sometimes feels like every part of the industry is telling you you’re not talented enough.”

Previous releases have been widely embraced by Australian radio stations triple j, triple j Unearthed, FBi, 4ZZZ, JOY FM and 96.5 Inner FM. They’ve also seen support from blogs Fashion Journal, Purple Sneakers, Project U, POPMUZIK (SWE), Women in Pop, Tone Deaf and Futuremag Music.

Mila co-writes all of her music with her partner Simon, taking influence from pop icons Lorde, Tove Styrke and Broods. “I find my sound is heavily influenced by the Australasian and Scandinavian sound”, she explains. “I like to think of myself as a musical hybrid, blending the brooding pop sensibilities of the North with the bright, sizzling sounds of the South.”

Outside of music, Mila works across various artistic pursuits, “I work as a photographer, mostly in fashion, but I also love portraiture and working with small businesses. I love realising a designer’s, artist’s or business owner’s vision through the visual medium”, she adds.

In the coming weeks, Mila Nile will reveal an accompanying music video for ‘Don’t Need Your Love’.

DOWN FOR TOMORROW UNVEIL PENSIVE NEW SINGLE ‘GOOD PERSON’, AND ACCOMPANYING B-SIDE ‘FULL CIRCLE’

“Emotionally driven punk at its finest.”

“Melody permeates everything Down For Tomorrow does. The Sydney-based band write hooks on top of hooks. That’s not an exaggeration.”
No Echo (USA)

“Down For Tomorrow pack this one with emphatic punk rock energy and uplifting hooks, compelling you to turn a shit day into a good one.” – 4/5 stars

Premiered on triple j Unearthed’s TOPS program

Following on from their dynamic EP ‘Whatever Happens’, Sydney-based indie-punk band Down For Tomorrow have returned offering gifts in their contemplative new single ‘Good Person’, and sentimental B-side ‘Full Circle’ – produced and mixed by Stevie Knight (Stand Atlantic, Yours Truly, The Dead Love).

‘Good Person’ explores the mellower elements of the band, opening with calming guitars and a dreamlike melody. The verses swell and crescendo into commanding choruses, complete with imperious drums, and packed layers of driven guitars and gripping bass, where the authoritative vocals of frontman Cody Stebbings produce a powerful message about staying positive in difficult situations.

“’Good Person’ is about coming to terms with the fact that we are responsible for our own lives”, explains Stebbings. “It traverses that understanding that we are a manifestation of our knowledge and experiences, and that life’s content reflects our truest thoughts.”

Reflecting more of their traditional sound, ‘Full Circle’ is an outburst of angst-driven punk with fierce riffs, hammering drums, and sweaty singalongs. The band’s well-founded rhythm section compliments the exquisite production, with Stebbings’ dutiful vocals highlighting the discomfort about illusional progression.

“’Full Circle’ is a quick return to the feelings that gave life and blood to our earlier offerings” mentions Stebbings. “A reminder that it is possible to progress and see improvement by visiting the past from time to time.”

To coincide with the release, the band will embark on a run of shows across NSW with Sydney-based counterparts and label buddies FANGZ. This continues on from a stint of shows throughout November 2020, where the band supported heavyweights Stand Atlantic and RedHook, along with selling out their own local headliner on Sydney’s North Shore.

Singles off ‘Whatever Happens’ were widely embraced by the likes of Spotify and Apple Music, and radio stations triple j, triple j Unearthed, Passport Approved, FBi Radio, SYN FM, and Aussie Music Weekly. The tracks also received praise from online blogs Rock Sound (UK), Pilerats, Life Without Andy, NME, Music Feeds, The Australian Music Scene, and AAA Backstage. The accompanying music videos for ‘Survive’ and “Trouble Prone’ were added to rotation on the ABC’s Rage.

‘Good Person’ is available worldwide now

CIVIC releases debut LP 'Future Forecast', Victorian shows announced, Henry Rollins weighs in

CIVIC releases debut LP ‘Future Forecast’, Victorian shows announced, Henry Rollins weighs in

by the partae March 26, 2021
written by the partae

“On Future Forecast, Civic’s first LP, they’ve added sophistication to their arrangements and songwriting without losing any of the in-your-face-ness of their previous work. Great guitar sounds. This is a really good record. Civic’s entire catalog is excellent” – Henry Rollins.

CIVIC have this morning released their debut album ‘Future Forecast’ .The album comes as a follow up to their highly sought after ‘New Vietnam’ EP (2018) and is their first major release through Flightless Records.  Listen to Future Forecast HERE.

Driving and tenacious, but never losing sight of a good hook and how to use it – CIVIC don’t tip-toe around the edges, but obliterate them with primal intensity. Finding a home somewhere between 80’s glam rock and Australia’s 70’s greats, they break the pieces of influence before crafting them into their own beast on ‘Future Forecast’.

VICTORIAN ALBUM LAUNCH SHOWS

Friday June 4th – The Croxton Bandroom – TIX HERE

Saturday June 5th – The Corner Hotel – TIX HERE

Sunday June 6th – Singing Bird Studio (all ages) – TIX HERE

Full Bio:

An origin story since time immemorial, the five piece came together in 2018 through the traps of the Melbourne music scene. Bonding over a shared love of tightly coiled riffs and a collective musical ethos, they channelled this into their first EP ‘New Vietnam’. In a head rush recording session, the 7 tracks were slammed out in a single day, with the underground hit going on to sell more than 1500 units worldwide. Making a name for themselves through the intensity of their live shows, their ‘New Vietnam’ launch would become one of those folklore moments within Melbourne. Taking to the stage with a contoured cheek and darkened eyes, McCullough’s glamoured stage presence beamed and boomed over the sold out crowd. Cutting through the scene with cult-like vigour, their garnered momentum would lead them to a string of sold out 7 inches, a European tour, a spot on the beloved Golden Plains Festival, a new found home on the revered Flightless Records, and a fan in punk icon Henry Rollins, “I am digging that band… not one bad track in their recorded catalogue”.

With momentum in the tank, they took to various locations across Victoria to get the beds of Future Forecast down. From Richmond’s historic Bakehouse Studios in all its grandeur, to a DIY run storage shed on High St, there’s consideration for the new and old on this album. Paying homage to the classics, but pivoting on them with avant-charged edge. It’s raw, searing guitars; pummeling rhythms; driving bass; with vocals that lock into and synergise with their wall of sound. Balanced by the raucous and restrained weaving of melodies and textures, the imbued sense of nostalgia, and the vocal variation which broadens their sound past any one genre label. There’s the horn fuelled drive of album opener ‘Radiant Eye’, the power pop ladden hook of ‘As Seen On Tv’, the emotively atmospheric and vocally subdued ‘Sunday Best’, culminating with closer ‘Come To Know’, before ending in a tightly wound splay of feedback and groove.

DOM DOLLA IS BACK WITH ‘PUMP THE BRAKES’ [OUT NOW ON SWEAT IT OUT]

BUY/STREAM: DOM DOLLA – PUMP THE BRAKES

Having kept fans eagerly awaiting the next thumping instalment, Australia’s crowned electronic talent Dom Dolla hits the mark with the bold new single ‘Pump The Brakes’, out now on Sweat It Out. Taking the world by storm with a series of hypnotic house heaters, including his international breakthrough single ‘Take It’, earning over 100 million streams worldwide, the Melbourne talent followed it up with the ultimate ode to dance floors ‘San Frandisco’. With both records being accredited gold, the latter went on to earn him a multitude of accolades including #1 most played triple j, whilst charting at #33 on triple j’s prestigious Hottest 100 list, before earning himself an AIR award for Best Independent Dance Release, as well as an ARIA award for Best Dance Release following two previous nominations.

The signature Dom Dolla sound shines through in all of its modulated tech-house glory on ‘Pump The Brakes’, whilst lyrically paying homage to his much loved and beat up first car. Although now looking a little tired and dishevelled, the car reflects a moment in time where Dom was just getting started on the club scene, with the song invoking that sense of anticipation and excitement. Dom shares “I produced this record specifically to play at the Shrine in LA in early 2020 (which turned out to be a few weeks before the world shut down). It was written as a tongue in cheek story partly inspired by my first car, an old Camry that collects dust in Melbourne while I’m away on tour. I wasn’t sure what to do with the record when dance floors paused around the world. But I’ve received requests for it every other day since. All things considered, I figured it’s probably time to get it out there into the world. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed giving it a rev on the dance floor”.

As a bright and charismatic personality on the scene, Dom’s feel good attitude shines through in his music, earning him a plethora of fans all around the world. Quickly pricking the ears of tastemakers far and wide, Dom was named Pete Tong’s ‘Future Star’ on BBC Radio 1, Billboard Dance ‘One to Watch’, and Dancing Astronaut’s ‘Breakthrough Artist’. Now with a staggering 300 million+ streams across his releases to date, Dom has proven himself through his originals, and his collaborations including the knockout single ‘Moving Blind’ with Sonny Fodera, the mammoth Torren Foot collaboration ‘Be Randy’ which earned him his first ARIA nomination, and one of his all time classics ‘Define’ with Go Freek, which to this day is one of his greatest streaming successes. Firmly cementing his place in Australia, and around the globe, Dom Dolla has become one of the most sought after producers, delivering official remixes for Purple Disco Machine’s ‘Body Funk’, PNAU’s ‘Chameleon’, and more recently Dua Lipa’s ‘Don’t Start Now’ which has garnered over 13 million streams.

In the wake of no touring through 2020, Dom Dolla took part in various live streams, with his debut live stream partnership with Untitled drawing in over 50,000 people. Continuing to connect with his fans all around the world, Dom went on to perform live streams with Tomorrowland, Defected Records, and a triple j Mix Up Residency. In the 12 months prior, Dom played an incredible 125 shows globally including some of his biggest performances to date at Coachella, Tomorrowland, EDC Las Vegas, Electric Zoo New York, and Spring Awakening Chicago, amongst many more. With his biggest undertakings to date still ahead of him, with a sold-out national tour of Australia, and forthcoming dates across America, UK, and Europe, including festival appearances at Ultra Music Festival, EDC Las Vegas, Tomorowland, Reading and Leeds Festival to name just a few, Dom is looking forward to reconnecting with his fans once more.

Dom Dolla’s thumping new single ‘Pump The Brakes’ is out now on Sweat It Out.

Today MAY-A shares a remix of her #1 Most Played on triple j single, ‘Time I Love To Waste‘ by Kilder. Listen HERE.

Kilder, the emerging Dutch producer and DJ known for his digitally-infused blend of RNB and EDM, bottle’s the feeling of love’s effervescent high through a floaty house rework, breathing a new layer into the original’s tale of a blossoming queer relationship. Since ‘Time I Love To Waste‘s original release, the single has secured rotation on triple j, peaking as the station’s #1 Most Played Song earlier this month alongside an interview with Richard Kingsmill on 2021, as well as praise from Billboard, This Song Is Sick, All Things Go, Sniffers, Alt Citizen, Sniffers, Early Rising, RAGE, Ones To Watch and many more.

The remix follows MAY-A‘s recent ‘No Place Like Home‘ tour, her debut headline shows to sold-out crowds, the result of a breakout year in 2020 with the release of ‘Apricots‘ and ‘Green‘, both of which received rotation from triple j. ‘Apricots‘ secured MAY-A‘s Hottest 200 debut at #190, following her inclusion as the coveted triple j Unearthed Feature Artist and the #44 Most Played Artist of 2020. Both singles have achieved widespread international support from NME, Variety, Dork, Out Front, American Songwriter, Elevator, RAGE, Tone Deaf, Pilerats, Sniffers, Coup De Main, Purple Sneakers, Early Rising, Ones To Watch with the success of ‘Apricots‘ accumulating over 5 million streams across DSPs to date.

Songwriting since age twelve, Maya Cumming has honed a brand of lyricism that marries the classic pop structures and storytelling of the parental favourites that permeated her childhood home, together with the nonchalant Gen Z cool of Clairo, and the suburban poetry of Lorde. With her poignant, elliptical storytelling, clear-eyed observational lyricism, and songwriting full of musical left-turns, as MAY-A she interrogates the realities of youth with clarity and maturity beyond her 19 years, and ‘Time I Love To Waste‘ is the latest piece from her treasure trove. Stay tuned as MAY-A continues to share her goldmine with the world.

AFL STARS + MUSICIANS AMPLIFY PLEAS TO SUPPORT LIVE MUSIC VENUES Matthew Richardson, Bob Murphy, Phil Jamieson + G Flip sing Melbourne music scene’s praises.

by the partae March 26, 2021
written by the partae

AFL legends Matthew Richardson and Bob Murphy have added their voices to the chorus of music lovers desperate to save Melbourne’s live music venues by appealing to the State Government to lift density restrictions. The AFL legends, encouraged by football’s triumphant return to Melbourne, now turn their focus to the city’s beleaguered live music scene.

Richardson and Murphy joined musicians Phil Jamieson (Grinspoon) and G Flip today to draw attention to the ongoing struggle faced by Victoria’s live music venues.

“Melbourne’s getting its culture back, its vibrancy back, but it won’t be complete until we get our live music back so I think its time that they were afforded the same luxuries that we have in our industry…Obviously the AFL is a massive industry and has the support of the big end of town and I feel like live music has been neglected a little bit” said Richmond great Matthew Richardson.

“Small venues are definitely the stepping stone for any musicians career, it’s the launching pad. It’s like the first two steps of the staircase, if they’re gone, how are you gonna get up?” said Melbourne musician G Flip.

“Until now we have been fumbling on, on a lot of goodwill and with the welcome support of JobKeeper” said Rod Smith of The Corner Hotel, “but that’s coming to an end next week along with rent relief and with our fixed costs remaining static…well, we’re in trouble basically”.

Last week, Save Our Scene Victoria urgently appealed to the Victorian government via an Open Letter which has now been signed by over 130 of Victoria’s live music venues. It calls for eased restrictions so that the live music industry can begin to trade sustainably when JobKeeper ends this week.

Whilst Save Our Scene welcomed the federal government’s RISE funding announcement yesterday, these competitive project grants are primarily targeted at festivals, concerts, tours and productions, and address project funding rather than assisting with music venues to cover core costs while they continue operate at 30% of regular capacity.

Despite what the headlines have suggested, live music venues are still subject to a one person per 2 square metre maximum density in Victoria, which equates to roughly 30% of normal licensed capacity. That’s a 70% drop in revenue, while costs remain static.  No business can survive like this, especially after nine months of closure last year.

The South Australian Government yesterday announced an easing of maximum density rules for venues, allowing for a genuine increase in audience capacities. Today Save Our Scene asks the Victorian State Government to do the same, as they have already done for Victoria’s theatres and sporting events. As JobKeeper ends, this is the only thing that will allow Melbourne music to get back on it’s feet.

Our music venues can not survive without Victorian Government intervention.
So please, protect our music venues. Support our artists. Save our scene.

We are the venues where Victorian music lovers see shows not just once a year, but every night of the week. Our venues nurture the part of Victoria’s music culture that is uniquely Victorian, providing community, connectedness and wellbeing to people across the state.
